VERSES.

* NOTE : comic canon will mainly be coming from bendis’ run of jessica jones. as i’m still in the process of reading more jessica jones material / comics in which she appears, i may add more as i go. as for tv series canon, i’ll be specific about what i’ll include / what i’ll apply.

* main. - this verse will portray jessica’s current circumstances, aligning with the events after “the return of the purple man”. she’s married to luke cage and shares a daughter with him, danielle. she primarily continues her work as a private investigator and joins the defenders when she can / is needed, as well as teaming up with carol danvers whenever her best friends calls on her.

details on this verse: for the return of the purple man, i will be using the events of season one in which he comes back, tries to get her “help” into becoming a “better person”, and she ends up being the one to kill him. a mix of both comic and series occurrences. i prefer the progression of events and jessica’s character development in the season one conclusion. instead of trish walker being controlled, it will be carol danvers.

note for luke cage writers : i will not automatically assume her and luke are married or in a relationship ! i do love them together either romantically or platonically. but, for comfort's sake on both ends, i will assume they are just friends until plotted otherwise. if you don't ship them, i'm totally okay with writing the relationship as unrequited or one-sided as it is my canon in any verse that jessica develops feelings for luke. if you do ship them, let's talk ! < 33

* days of jewel. - this verse will explore her time as an avenger under the superhero name, jewel.

* post purple. - this verse will have roots in the alias comic as jessica tries to cope, or … doesn’t try to cope, post-killgrave mind control. she has remained distant from her best friend, carol danvers, but has made new friends(?) in the powered community, including luke cage and matthew murdock. this bleeds into the time that she’s hired as matt murdock’s bodyguard alongside luke cage.

* the first season of this so-called life. ( this is such a corny name, please help me come up with a better one, anyways )- this will be the more tv series-centric verse for those who might not be as familiar with the comic occurrences / would prefer to write within the series canon. i will be mainly focused on season one and the events of the defenders series. i don’t remember much about season two and i haven’t watched the third. however, i am open to discussing / plotting further into the series and can read episode summaries if needed.

details on this verse / canon divergences : i will not be including the intimate relationship between luke and jessica from the series. she will still approach him and strike up a friendship with him, but i will be omitting the sexual relationship they develop. she will still develop romantic feelings for him, but i am uncomfortable with that storyline evolving into an intimate relationship between the two.

*defenders v. - takes place during the events in disney plus' defenders series. can explore anything that takes place post-midland circle.

The Variants (2022)

General (watered down) Plot:  *Spoilers Ahead* 

This was a limited series containing five issues in which Jessica Jones learns that Purple man had a pervious victim before her. He planted a ticking bomb in her that in exactly 10 years after her release she would kill her family and then her self. Jones worries that he may have done the same thing to her so she sends her family into hiding. She runs into many versions of her self who were all her at one point. The first variant kiss Daredevil because in her timeline she was married to him. This causes confusion but jess is able to clear the air and find the other variants. At some point the 4 variants and Jess are on her roof trying to allow the Purple man into her head in order to escape him. She does this with the help of prof. X. As she come back to consciousness she realizes she never said her daughters name which Jewel happened to know. Jessica was able to figure out she was the one behind all of it. Turns out Jewel was stealing all other variant Jessica's powers and threatening to kill their families if they didn't help her against OG jess. They defeat her and Luke and Dani come back to town. 

(Issue 3)

*A Small Disclaimer*

I have not read the issues that pertain to Jessica and Killgrave (purple man). However, I am aware of what happened and how she suffered so im not completely ignorant to the underlying themes in this comic. 

My Interpretation: 

There are multiple themes that stick out in my head about this issue but the big one seems to be how this is about survivors guilt to some extent. While Jessica never out right says she is guilty for having what they do not, she survived a horrible tragedy that the rest of them had not endured. I do not think the theme of survivors guilt is meant to be taken at face value in this comic though.

The Variants:

The use of the variants in this comic is the thing that stands out the most to me as a theme of survivors guilt. All these different versions on OG Jess come back intro her life, some of which were actually her at one point. Jessica mentions that Jewel and the one referred to as Prime were both her at one point. She points out that they had the same thought process and mannerisms, the only thing that was different about them were there love lives back in their world. 

Though not explicitly stated by OG Jess, I think seeing all these versions of her self leads her down a hole of her past as Jewel is a reflection of her life before Killgrave while Prime is a reflection of her life immediately after. Seeing these images of her self gets her even more worried about what she could do to her family. Often when someone sees images that remind them of their past they become very upset as they are forced to remember what their life was before the tragedy hit them. I believe that Jess seeing these two reflected images of herself sent her into shock and sent her into fight or flight mode. She starts to place the blame on herself again just by seeing these two variants. 

(Issue 3)

Professor. X & Killgrave:

In issue 3, OG Jess and the four variants decide that OG Jess has to let purple man into her head. They say that by running from him they are letting him create fear with in her. They claim that letting him in will allow her to defeat what ever time bomb he put in her head. The four variants stand with their backs to Jess as she lies on the ground and decides to allow him in. Through this we see that Professor X has joined the party and is there as backup for Jess. However, he comes to the realization that this image of Killgrave in her head is not real. Professor X pleads with Jess to forgive him and thus forgive herself of the guilt she is feeling. She refuses and kills him in her mind instead. She awakes after this and the plot continues.  

To me this scene is all about Jess having to forgive him and herself but being forced into it. Professor X tells her that it is the only way for her to be happy when that is simply not true. Victims do not have to forgive their abusers and move on from what happened to them no matter the time passed. Professor X is playing off of her guilt that she has in order to make her feel like she has to forgive Killgrave in order to lead a happy life. Thankfully she refuses but many victims get pressured into forgiving their abusers way too early. People will often say that ‘it happened a long time ago”, “they have become bitter”, “ they need to move on for themselves”, and while some of those things have their place, they should not be said to victims of abuse who are doing their best to survive. No victim ever has to forgive if they do not want to. To me Professor X represents this outside pressure to forgive and Jess is actively having to rebel against it to preserve herself. 

(Issue 4)

Protection:

Another thin that stands out to me about Jess in this series is how she protects everyone who she considerers friends to her in this series. Obviously when jess first realizes what is happening she sends Luke and Dani away in an effort to protect them. But what is even more important her is her reaction towards Jewel. When talking to Jewel in issue 3 jess realizes that she has never seen of or heard of Killgrave. She comes to the realization that she was never hurt by him. In that moment Jess is so over come with emotion that she promises to keep Jewel safe (seen below). She realizes that she is the most innocent and pure out of all of them. Once she learns that Jewel was the one behind all of it, she feels hurt and betrayed almost like having new knife stuck in an old wound. 

For people who suffer from a great trauma, it is easy for them to compare themselves to other people they see and want to protect them from the same thing they have gone through. When they do not take that advice it often ends up hurting the person trying to protect them as they watch them walk down a dangerous path they had already been down before. This is what jess is trying to do for Jewel and when she betrays her, she feels that all too familiar pain again

Personal Takeaways:

This comic hit home for me in a way I wasn't expecting. When writing about these general blanket statements, I was really writing about myself and what I felt having lived through major traumatic experiences in my life at a young age. This comic can resonate with a lot of people who feel guilt and try to protect those around them. 

Overall Review and Rating:

Overall I give this comic 4 and 1/2 stars. The only reason it loses some point in my eyes is because I had predicted Jewel was going to be the evil one of the four variants. Im not sure if that's a troupe they fell into or if it was just me picking up on it. This comic has really strong messages and themes that I don't see much often anymore so its nice to see it again.

~ Very vibrant while also emphasising highlight colours which means stuff like Cynthia's green streaks are one of the first things you notice and this goes for anything that's not "normal" as well horns and fangs will shine even at night which forces people with such features to wear black to stop this feature if they want to ~ Nice clean lineart that is just barely noticeable if you focus on it with more lines being on hair than anything else which is part of the reason why Cynthia and Gwyneth got hair streaks to be more recognizable ~ Shadows of people are all halftones while buildings, plants and animals all have solid shadows.

A lot of 616 characters exist in 4563; Peter Parker was Spider-Man, CIndy Moon was Silk, WIlson Fisk is Kingpin, Cynthia's wife Gwyneth is a variant of Gwen Stacy etc. There is really too many to go over them all but throw a ask in my inbox asking about a character and I can answer if they exist/have a role in 4563.

The spider that bit Cynthia was a hybrid of two species of spider; the SImaetha sp and a jewel spider which then had its DNA further altered with a bunch of DNA that had the capability of regenerating body parts.

Cynthia lives in New York CIty which is currently in the year 2027 but a much less polluted NYC than our real world NYC due to events in the past of 4563 meaning that the global climate change crisis was taken seriously and combated.

Cynthia is NOT part of the Spider Society and never will be, it is possible she and the other Spiders of 4563 once were attempted to be recruited but they vehemently hate the entire concept of it and would refuse the offer entirely. They all have lost people they loved but to be a spider hero in their eyes means continuing to save as many lives as possible and a organisation with the purpose of ensuring deaths happen is an organisation that has no true heroes in it/full of heroes who have given up on giving their all once they have been told things were meant to happen. Heck, one of the other 4563 Spiders, Akina would also believe that The Spider Society is kinda using the pain of loss to manipulate potential recruits which disgusts her so suffice it to say The Spider Society knows that 4563 will not be a universe part of them.

Cynthia (And all of 4563 Spiders for that matter) have organic spider webs, hers are typical spider webs albeit hers inexplicably are purple for an unknown reason and she doesn't care enough to figure out why.

She does not have any pets currently but she'd like a cat one day, she will probably get one sometime after her first daughter is born but that remains to be seen.

Oh goodness no!, she is the third Spider of 4563 after CIndy and Peter, there is three more after her currently; Akina and Sanae Takamaki followed by Gwyneth. All of her and Gwyneth's daughters will also have the same powers, same with Akina's daughter, they all can climb walls by the time they are a year old but the more dangerous powers don't develop until they are all teens. Any others besides them remain to be seen at this point in time.

The game series Viva Pinata has many more games than we do and is still going strong to this day. SHIELD is called SWORD in 4563 and it doesn't have a SWORD equivalent like the comics version of SWORD, they have a space station controlled by a sentient AI-Alien Crystal hybrid named LYLA who loves superheroes. There is a couple heroes that are set to become heroes in the future like Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Venom and symbiotes like that in the 616 comics simply do not exist at all.

She doesn't have a No Killing Rule but a No Killing Unless Necessary Rule, Cynthia genuinely believes there are certain super villains that the world would be better off if they were dead, that they should die to prevent more loss of life than if they remained alive BUT those examples are very few in number consisting entirely of The Arch Jinn, Kingpin and The Goblin-Blade. The rest of the criminals and super villains she thinks just needs help and would never think of killing them. After Peter Parkers death she did kill a lot of super villains and a few normal criminals until she snapped out of it namely; Calypso Ezili, William Baker/Sandman, Alistair Smythe/Spider-Slayer, Wayne Markley/Fusion, Martin Li/Mr Negative, Herman Schultz/Shocker, Fritz von Meyer/Swarm, Carl King/Thousand, Phineas Mason/Tinkerer, Phill Urich/Goblin Knight, Dmitri Smerdyakov/Chameleon, Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone, Silvio Manfredi/Silvermane and Quentin Beck/Mysterio so she knows she has no right to chastise other Spiders about their rule of Killing Is Fine as that would just make her a hypocrite.

Very important question here- do they have any pets? And if so, do they ever take them out on their crime fighting missions?

Are they the only Spider-Person in their universe? ( For example, Miles and Peter co-existing in the Insomniac Games )

Are there things that exist in their universe but don’t in others? ( For example, Comic Con existing in Miles-42’s universe but not in 1610 Miles’s! Or certain Marvel superheroes existing in their universe but not others. )

And lastly ( For now will probably make a few more of these… honestly I could make one daily but I don’t wanna bother people lol ) what does your Spider-Sona think about killing criminals… and their general approach to crime.
