The Variants (2022)

General (watered down) Plot:  *Spoilers Ahead* 

This was a limited series containing five issues in which Jessica Jones learns that Purple man had a pervious victim before her. He planted a ticking bomb in her that in exactly 10 years after her release she would kill her family and then her self. Jones worries that he may have done the same thing to her so she sends her family into hiding. She runs into many versions of her self who were all her at one point. The first variant kiss Daredevil because in her timeline she was married to him. This causes confusion but jess is able to clear the air and find the other variants. At some point the 4 variants and Jess are on her roof trying to allow the Purple man into her head in order to escape him. She does this with the help of prof. X. As she come back to consciousness she realizes she never said her daughters name which Jewel happened to know. Jessica was able to figure out she was the one behind all of it. Turns out Jewel was stealing all other variant Jessica's powers and threatening to kill their families if they didn't help her against OG jess. They defeat her and Luke and Dani come back to town.

*A Small Disclaimer*

I have not read the issues that pertain to Jessica and Killgrave (purple man). However, I am aware of what happened and how she suffered so im not completely ignorant to the underlying themes in this comic. 

My Interpretation: 

There are multiple themes that stick out in my head about this issue but the big one seems to be how this is about survivors guilt to some extent. While Jessica never out right says she is guilty for having what they do not, she survived a horrible tragedy that the rest of them had not endured. I do not think the theme of survivors guilt is meant to be taken at face value in this comic though.

The Variants:

The use of the variants in this comic is the thing that stands out the most to me as a theme of survivors guilt. All these different versions on OG Jess come back intro her life, some of which were actually her at one point. Jessica mentions that Jewel and the one referred to as Prime were both her at one point. She points out that they had the same thought process and mannerisms, the only thing that was different about them were there love lives back in their world. 

Though not explicitly stated by OG Jess, I think seeing all these versions of her self leads her down a hole of her past as Jewel is a reflection of her life before Killgrave while Prime is a reflection of her life immediately after. Seeing these images of her self gets her even more worried about what she could do to her family. Often when someone sees images that remind them of their past they become very upset as they are forced to remember what their life was before the tragedy hit them. I believe that Jess seeing these two reflected images of herself sent her into shock and sent her into fight or flight mode. She starts to place the blame on herself again just by seeing these two variants.

Professor. X & Killgrave:

In issue 3, OG Jess and the four variants decide that OG Jess has to let purple man into her head. They say that by running from him they are letting him create fear with in her. They claim that letting him in will allow her to defeat what ever time bomb he put in her head. The four variants stand with their backs to Jess as she lies on the ground and decides to allow him in. Through this we see that Professor X has joined the party and is there as backup for Jess. However, he comes to the realization that this image of Killgrave in her head is not real. Professor X pleads with Jess to forgive him and thus forgive herself of the guilt she is feeling. She refuses and kills him in her mind instead. She awakes after this and the plot continues.  

To me this scene is all about Jess having to forgive him and herself but being forced into it. Professor X tells her that it is the only way for her to be happy when that is simply not true. Victims do not have to forgive their abusers and move on from what happened to them no matter the time passed. Professor X is playing off of her guilt that she has in order to make her feel like she has to forgive Killgrave in order to lead a happy life. Thankfully she refuses but many victims get pressured into forgiving their abusers way too early. People will often say that ‘it happened a long time ago”, “they have become bitter”, “ they need to move on for themselves”, and while some of those things have their place, they should not be said to victims of abuse who are doing their best to survive. No victim ever has to forgive if they do not want to. To me Professor X represents this outside pressure to forgive and Jess is actively having to rebel against it to preserve herself.

Protection:

Another thin that stands out to me about Jess in this series is how she protects everyone who she considerers friends to her in this series. Obviously when jess first realizes what is happening she sends Luke and Dani away in an effort to protect them. But what is even more important her is her reaction towards Jewel. When talking to Jewel in issue 3 jess realizes that she has never seen of or heard of Killgrave. She comes to the realization that she was never hurt by him. In that moment Jess is so over come with emotion that she promises to keep Jewel safe (seen below). She realizes that she is the most innocent and pure out of all of them. Once she learns that Jewel was the one behind all of it, she feels hurt and betrayed almost like having new knife stuck in an old wound. 

For people who suffer from a great trauma, it is easy for them to compare themselves to other people they see and want to protect them from the same thing they have gone through. When they do not take that advice it often ends up hurting the person trying to protect them as they watch them walk down a dangerous path they had already been down before. This is what jess is trying to do for Jewel and when she betrays her, she feels that all too familiar pain again

Personal Takeaways:

This comic hit home for me in a way I wasn't expecting. When writing about these general blanket statements, I was really writing about myself and what I felt having lived through major traumatic experiences in my life at a young age. This comic can resonate with a lot of people who feel guilt and try to protect those around them. 

Overall Review and Rating:

Overall I give this comic 4 and 1/2 stars. The only reason it loses some point in my eyes is because I had predicted Jewel was going to be the evil one of the four variants. Im not sure if that's a troupe they fell into or if it was just me picking up on it. This comic has really strong messages and themes that I don't see much often anymore so its nice to see it again.
