December 2, 2023. 🫳 meh. Streaming on Max. Since Val Kilmer can no longer speak, is it wrong to mock his pitiful attempt at an English accent here? Remember when everyone got their panties in a bunch over Kevin Costner's lack of an accent when he played Robin Hood? This movie was neither thrilling, terrifying, suspenseful, epic, or poignant, it simply... was. So glad Michael Douglas was added, his character was the only bright spot in the whole movie.

Producers Seek $24K to Get Nicky Hopkins Documentary Made
- “The Session Man” is finished; 39 tracks need licensing
If anyone is ever going to see “The Session Man,” producers need to raise $24,000 to license 39 tracks for the Nicky Hopkins documentary
Touted as “rock ’n’ roll’s greatest session man,” by narrator Bob Harris, Hopkins, who died in 1994, played on more more than 250 albums over his 30-year career. Over those decades, Hopkins was a member of Quick Silver Messenger Service, the Jeff Beck Group and the Jerry Garcia Band and played alongside the likes of John Lennon, the Kinks, Joe Cocker, Zero, Meat Loaf, the Rolling Stones and others.
“He could play just about anything,” Keith Richards says in the trailer for the film.
The Michael Treen-directed documentary is finished. But it cannot be shown to potential distributors at film festivals until licensing is secured.
Harry Shearer sums up why Hopkins - and his instrument - were so important to the bands he assisted.
“Piano has all the colors - can say anything,” Shearer says. “And a guy who’s as talented as Nicky can take a simple song and fill it with all sorts of extra feeling and meaning.”
Donations can be made here.

Hi, I have a question and I thought that asking you might qork because you're really good at this but did Elvis ever said anything about crossdressing for Girl Happy? If it made him uncomfortable or if he found it funny or anything?
Tumblr media
hello, thank you so much for the ask ꨄ︎ !!
tbh the first time I watched “girl happy” and saw that scene my immediate thought was~ how did y’all convince Elvis to wear that ?
Tumblr media
and then my second thought was what would be Elvis’ drag name because he was rocking that dress a little too good
(please share your drag name idea for Elvis if you have one lmaoo)
as for your question I unfortunately couldn’t find anything specific like a comment by Elvis about having to wear a dress for the scene but knowing that he was prideful, especially about his image, I would imagine he likely wasn’t too thrilled about it although probably never voiced any opposition about it either
by that time in his film career he had made so many of the same kinds of pictures, requiring him to do so many humiliating things, that I think he became almost desensitized to the material. He knew he had no choice in what would be asked of him and so he just did the best with what he got
MARTY LACKER: “Elvis was ruined by the Colonel and by Hal Wallis, they didn’t let him develop… About ‘64 or ‘65, Elvis started saying ‘Colonel, I’m tired of doing the same old damn movies’. The turning point was “Girl Happy”, when the script was so lame and the songs, like ‘Do the Clam’ were so obnoxious. When he had to film the scene where he sings ‘Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce’, he went around the whole day ranting”
(excerpt from “Elvis and the Memphis Mafia” by Alanna Nash)
but honestly when thinking of all the things that he had to do for the sake of “comedy” in his films (like the god forsaken yoga scene in easy come, easy go) having to wear a silly little dress seems far more preferable 😭
from what I have read it actually seems like he was far more bothered by having to wear a blond wig in “kissin’ cousins”
Tumblr media
(excerpt from “Elvis” by Jerry Hopkins)
idk something that I’ve always admired about Elvis was how he was able to persevere despite everything that was thrown at him, especially during his film career; he was unhappy with the movies he was making, unhappy with the songs he had to sing, unhappy with the costumes, and yet he always showed up to set on time, he always took studying his lines seriously, and he was always willing to do 40 takes or more of those songs just to get them perfect
look at him picking up his script for “double trouble” so that he could start studying it 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I will forever be frustrated about how the Colonel completely sabotaged Elvis and his love for acting… we truly got something great in “King Creole” and not only was the film great but Elvis was proud of it and that is what I love about it most of all
and on a random side note please enjoy some photos of Billy Smith, Elvis’ cousin, donning a woman’s blouse and some fake breasts when he acted as Anne Helm’s body double for “follow that dream” bc he also makes a pretty woman 💀

“Help Me”
THE MASTER WAS CONQUERED IN ONE SINGLE TRY. Elvis dropped to his knees while recording this song in studio.
youtube
Studio Sessions for RCA, December 12, 1973: Stax Studios, Memphis “Help Me” was the last song recorded on December 12, and they got it in one take; in his book 'Elvis: The Final Years', Jerry Hopkins reports that Elvis dropped to his knees to sing it. "Elvis Presley: A Life in Music" by Ernst Jorgensen. Foreword by Peter Guralnick (1998)
Right during the first 1974 Las Vegas engagement at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada (Jan. 26 - Feb. 9, 1974), "Help Me" was a part of Elvis' live concert setlist.

FIRST OFFICIAL RELEASES
The song was released as a single, flip side to "If You Talk In Your Sleep", on May 1974. It became a great favorite of Elvis for his live performances. Interesting enough, a live recording was released in an album before the studio master could be properly released in an album itself.

On March 20, 1974 Elvis performed at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee, and the live album "Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis" was released with the soundboard recordings from this concert in which Presley performs "Help Me" live. This live album was released on July 7, 1974. Only in January 1975 the studio recording of the song, recorded at Stax Records in 1973, would be featured in an album, "Promised Land".

"HELP ME" lyrics Lord, help me walk another mile, just one more mile I'm tired of walkin' all alone Lord, help me smile another smile, just one more smile You know I just can't make it on my own I never thought I needed help before I thought that I could get by by myself But now I know I just can't take it any more With a humble heart, on bended knee, I'm beggin' You, please, help me Come down from Your golden throne to me, to lowly me I need to feel the touch of Your tender hand Remove the chains of darkness, let me see, Lord, let me see Just where I fit into Your master plan I never thought I needed help before I thought that I could get by by myself But now I know I just can't take it any more With a humble heart, on bended knee, I'm beggin' You, please, help me With a humble heart, on bended knee, I'm beggin' You, please, help me

Elvis wore the 1973 Arabian jumpsuit for the concert (8:30 pm). Due to that famous concert on March 20 in his hometown, the fans nicknamed the suit as the "Memphis Suit".

CELEBRATION OF THE LIZARD
Lions in the street & roaming
Dogs in heat, rabid, foaming
A beast caged in the heart of a city
The body of his mother
Rotting in the summer ground.
He fled the town.

I'm interested in film because to it's the closest approximation in art that we have to the actual flow of consciousness, in both dreamlife and in the everyday perception of the world.

Nicky Hopkins began playing the piano at the age of three. He was initially tutored by a local piano teacher and in his teens he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. Physically, Nicky suffered from Crohn's disease for most of his life and a series of operations almost cost him his life in his late teenage years and was bed-ridden for 19 months. Frail health led him to concentrate on working as a session musician instead of joining bands, although he left his mark performing with a wide variety of famous bands.
Nicky performed on many popular and enduring British and American rock music recordings from the 1960s to the 1990s, most notably on songs recorded by the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Who, the Beatles, the Steve Miller Band, Jefferson Airplane, Rod Stewart, George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, The Hollies, Cat Stevens, Carly Simon, Harry Nilsson, Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, Jerry Garcia, Jeff Beck, Joe Cocker, Art Garfunkel, Badfinger, Graham Parker, Gary Moore and Donovan. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest studio pianists in the history of popular rock music.
Nicholas Christian Hopkins died in Nashville, Tennessee on September 6, 1994 at the age of 50.
