Synopsis: You married Jeremy Armitage on whim, but you had no clue what you were in for. Now, all you want is to get out — or die trying.
TWs: Substance Abuse

< Previous Chapter | Current Chapter: II | Next Chapter >
You weren’t the textbook victim of abuse. You never thought you would be, hell, you were from a rich family, you had a law degree and you had financial security. And, like any other rich family, especially one living in New York City, your parents divorced when you were 7 or 8, and Mom died from some disease which she pretended didn’t exist, when you were 15. Your dad, a businessman, then married your stepmom when you were 16, in hopes of having another child. 5 years later, she wasn’t pregnant, leaving you still his only child, and thus, highly overprotected. At 20, you already had a law degree, in no small part thanks to him owning the university, and he was grooming you to be the next chairwoman of the company. Part of that grooming included a hyper-specific criteria for a husband: he must be 5-15 years older than you; he must have a profession, so as not to rely on your inheritance.
Your mother’s death, naturally, made you much closer to your dad, as overbearing as he was. That also, naturally, made you abuse substances. You started drinking fancy champagne at 12, his spirits at 15, and you had your first bump of cocaine when you were 17, with your best friend, Sally. Frankly, you were a drug addict and alcoholic, but you functioned well enough that your dad overlooked it most of the time. At the start, he had threatened to cut your inheritance, but your stepmom, thank god for her, had convinced him that this was a normal part of growing up, and you’d grow out of it, like they had. When you didn’t, you felt like you want to die, and a part of you was afraid you were fucked in the head.
Your family were close friends with the Armitages. When you were 6 or 7, you remember Dean and his son Jeremy coming over, and having dinner and wine with your dad. He'd sometimes invite you to sit with them, but you never really caught what they were saying, something about gods and immortals. When you went and told your mom about this, she’d shake her head and go on about how the Armitages were evil, and how you should never trust one of them, despite what your dad might say about their “respectable professions.” You believed neither of them, but you always found your mom’s theories much more entertaining. Dean and his wife Missy died in a fire when you were 14, and you heard that Jeremy and his sister Rose survived, but you didn’t hear much more.
When you turned 18, your father began taking you to parties, where he’d introduce you to socialites, and those he considered “appropriate suitors.” Jeremy and his sister Rose were among them. Your dad was always eager for you to get in a relationship with Jeremy, saying something about him having “the hands of a god,” but out of the 2 Armitage siblings, you felt much more drawn to Rose, brushing Jeremy off as a fucking creep. He said you should be like Rose too, now a nurse, and who ran the Armitage’s charities, instead of being a “cokehead alcoholic.” You weren’t particularly close to either of them, and largely ignored Jeremy’s advances for the next 3 years. The men you mainly dated were all career businessmen, lawyers and the occasional politician, in the age range that your dad approved. You found your relationships with them were mostly dissatisfying, and for the ones you did enjoy, you found them to have several mistresses, and it was the end of that. Fuck your luck, you guess. So, you decided that you might as well go on a date with Jeremy, and you asked your dad’s secretary to set a reservation at some fancy restaurant where you took your dates.
He was right on time, and you blushed slightly at him helping you into your seat. A part of you found it patronising, but a larger part of you found it endearing. That part of you wants to get taken care of, wants him to take care of you like this. You didn’t know how to start the conversation, so you use your default starter of “Have you been here before?” He replies, “Yes, I think. My graduation dinner.” You smile awkwardly at him, and he smiles back, unsure of how to proceed. You let him steer it, and he did, asking you about your degree, your interests, hell, even your life as your dad’s heir apparent. Internally, you’d been dying for someone to ask you that, and you respond with everything. He joins in when you mock your dad, something you thought he was too upstuck for; he comforts you when you bring up your mom’s death; and all in all, he’s a perfect gentleman, pouring your wine and cutting your food for you. It’s been years since someone made you feel like this, and you invited him back to your apartment.
Jeremy brought you a glass of water and a cold towel and wiped the beads of sweat off your face. You lay there on the bed, letting him do whatever he wanted to you, as you contemplated what the fuck just happened. You realised something: you were in love. But, no, there was definitely a shit-ton of other girls he was fucking. You decided to ask him about that, asking, “Do you have anyone else you’re involved with? A girlfriend? A fiancée?” He shook his head, saying, “No, unless you,” and smirked. You blushed, and he asked, “So, are you inviting me to your birthday on Wednesday?” You nodded. “Alright, see you there,” he told you, packed his bags, and left your apartment, saying “see you later.” Oh, if only you actually had a chance with him.
You suppose really fell in love with him on your birthday. As always, you found yourself getting blackout drunk and close to getting alcohol poisoning, only this time, Jeremy was there, making sure you drank water in between sips, and dragging you off stage before you tripped. This should’ve been a warning sign to you, his possessiveness, but you ignored it. After all, had anyone else ever stayed with you overnight to make sure you remained warm and stable after a near-alcohol poisoning incident? That was enough to make you realise you wanted to spend the rest of your life with him, and for some reason, he wanted to spend the rest of his life with you, too. So that’s why he went into Van Cleef the next morning, bought you a ring, and proposed, right then and there. You, naturally, said yes, and you two decided to get married the next day.
Your father, naturally, agreed to the wedding. After all, Jeremy met his criteria; he was 14 years older than you; he was a successful neurosurgeon, and he had an inheritance of his own. As a wedding present, he bought the two of you an apartment in Central Park, close to Jeremy’s workplace, at Mt. Sinai Hospital, and for the first few days of your marriage, everything was perfect. He was attentive, caring and patient with you, and it felt like heaven. The only minor downside was that he seemed a bit too attentive, a bit too caring when you tried to do coke, and he made you promise to quit, and you did, not intending to keep it, telling him so. “I’ll make you keep it,” he laughed, which unnerved you, slightly. But it was nothing, right?
Right?

Anne Rice's Personal Fancasts for The Vampire Chronicles
(Important Disclaimer: I gathered this together as a curiosity, not as a comment on any past, current, or future actors playing these characters, and if you feel the need to use any of this to make anything other than positive comments on any past, current, or future actors playing any of these characters, I don't agree with you and I don't endorse it, and I hope Lestat comes and yells at you about it in your dreams)
Looking for her thoughts on a few things from her novels, I stumbled upon the weird fact that Anne Rice has a huge digital footprint of which actors she at some point had as her own mental image or ideal casting of her characters. I've collected as much as I could, and so, for fun, here they are! Unless otherwise specified, these were all posted on Facebook between 2009 and 2018.
Lestat
General Comments:
He is a "man", not a "boy"
He's a "big guy, quite tall and strong" (she emphasized this a lot)
He should be a guy in his late 20's so the actor doesn't change too much and can play a 250 year old immortal
He could be played by an unknown
He should not have dark hair or a five o'clock shadow
He should be good looking, because "Lestat's beauty is part of him, part of his self-assurance, his arrogance, his confidence and his seductive power"
First actor she thought looked like Lestat: a young Rutgar Hauer
Actors She Specifically Suggested
Chris Hemsworth (Mentioned at least x 3, said when she watched movies with him she could only see him as Lestat)
Richard Armitage (Mentioned at least x 3)
Anson Mount (Mentioned at least x 2)
Stephen Amell (Mentioned at least x 2)
Charlie Hunnam
Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ
Leonardo Dicaprio (late 90's, mentioned at least x 2)
Actors She Responded Positively to Being Suggested
Travis Fimmel
Harry Lloyd
Wes Bently (2000, was apparently considered for Queen of the Damned)
Louis
General Comments
Mentioned the idea of Louis and Nicholas being played by the same actor
Originally inspired by actor Alain Delon
Actors She Specifically Suggested
Matt Bomer (Mentioned at least x 7, mentioned a lot outside of fancasting, she was really in love with Matt Bomer)
Richard Armitage
Hugh Dancy
Marius
General Comments
"At least 40"
She did not care if he wasn't blonde (see her suggestions below for why)
Actors She Specifically Suggested
Matthew MacFayden (Mentioned a least x 7 but I eventually stopped counting)
Gary Oldman (late 90's)
Actors She Responded Positively to Being Suggested
Paul Bettany
Armand
General Comments
Has to be someone in his 20's (also specified 25 or 30), a "baby faced man, a boyish man"
Actors She Specifically Suggested
Simon Woods (Mentioned at least x 2)
Johnny Depp (Late 90's)
Gabrielle
General Comments
Past 40, closer to 50
Actors She Specifically Suggested
Cher (Mentioned at least x 2, was a suggestion for Louis in the 80's when the idea of gender swapping the character was in the mix for IWTV)
Judy Davis (late 90's)
Eva Green
Actors She Responded Positively to Being Suggested
Claire Danes
Evan Rachel Wood
Kirsten Dunst
Akasha
General Comments
Should be played by a black actress in tribute to Aaliyah's performance in Queen of the Damned being such an entry point for black fans of the series
Actors She Specifically Suggested
Lupita Nyong'o
Tiana Benjamin
Memnoch
Actors She Specifically Suggested
Russell Crowe
Pandora
Actors She Specifically Suggested
Eva Green
David Talbot
General Comments
Should be British
Actors She Specifically Suggested
Jeremy Irons
Anthony Hopkins

Where are those keys? ( Get Out Fanfic ) [ Oc x Oc ]
Title: Where are those keys? ( Get out Fanfic ) [ Oc x Oc ]
Summary: Jasmine Armitage never believed in her family stupid little cult belief. They would take black people and switch their Brain for theirs, and they would leave as a black person. But enter Chris in the picture and things change. Now it's up to Jasmine to think of if life for her or not.
Pairings: Oc x Oc ( Not part of the story )
Warning : Hypnosis, slight violence.
Author Note - This part takes place in my get out Fanfic on Wattpad. This is just for fun.
Jasmine Armitage was sitting at the table eating crackers, it was one of her favorite late night snacks. She moaned in satisfaction at the taste. Her eyes were closed, so she didn't see any movement.
But she did hear something.
She opened her eyes, and she saw her mother standing by the dinning room entrance door.
She swallowed the last bit of the crackers, and put them away. She knew what was going to happen next.
It was time for their next plan.
She nervously twitched her fingers, anything to get her mind off what was about to happen.
Chris came downstairs first, he held his luggage in his hand and he looked at the family. He looked freaked out and she wanted so badly to shield him from her family.
“ Yo where are you going? The party is getting started?!” Jeremy said.
“ Yo man, just putting the bags in the car?”.
“ Would anyone like some tea?" her mother asked.
Chris responded. “ No I'm good, we're leaving actually”.
Jasmine arched her eyebrows confused, she had to play along. “ Why?”.
“ Is something wrong?” Her mother asked again.
This time Rose, her sister spoke up. “ His dog got very sick and he needs to be at the vet first thing in the morning”.
“ Oh, how terrible ” their mother replied.
Rose was pretending to find the key, but she held the key in her hand.
She was stalling.
Waiting for the next command.
That was why Jasmine hated her family. This was wrong and cruel, but if she goes against them, she'll be put into the sunken place.
“ Rose where are those keys?” Chris asked impatiently. Jasmine sighed and walked into the living room, she leaned against the window.
Her brother Jeremy was swinging the lacrosse stick, he was inching close and close to the African American male.
Jasmine's heart was beating fast in her chest, she nervously clenched her fist.
Just then their father came in, he walked to the fireplace and looked into the fire.
“ What's your purpose Chris?”.
“ What?”.
“ what is your purpose in life? ”.
“ Right now it's finding those keys" Chris replied looking at his girlfriend.
Jasmine bit her lip and squinted her eyes at her sister, and she looked at her brother.
“ Fire is a reflection of our mortality ” Their father began, still looking into the fire. “ We born. We breath, and we die".
“ Rose?” Chris said again, looking at his girlfriend.
“ I'm looking” Rose replied, looking at her boyfriend and then book into the purse.
But Jasmine could hear the key, and she was sure Chris did as well.
“ Even the sun will die some day, we are divine, we are gods trapped in cocoons”.
“ Rose” Chris said, sounding desperate to get out of here.
“ I don't know where they are” Rose stated, crying.
“ Rose the keys. Now! Rose the keys!” Chris yelled, finally over it.
Jeremy swings the lacrosse stick and Chris jumped back. “ Wow, careful bro”.
“ What the fuck?” Rose replied.
Jasmine chimed in. “ Jeremy no”.
“ I didn't do anything ” Jeremy defended himself.
“ What the fuck is going on” Rose cried, still looking for the keys.
The family started to get close, and Jasmine stood close. But she looked like she was ready to defend him at any second.
“ Where are those keys, Rose?” Chris asked one last time, this time he sounded done for.
Rose's facial held fear, and sorrow but changed instantly, her emotions switched and turned off.
“ You know I can't give you the keys right babe?” she asked, facial expression now monotone.
Chris dropped his bag, and sighed.
Jasmine bit her lip, he had at least five seconds to get out, but he wouldn't make it to the door thanks to Jeremy.
“ Come on” Jeremy said, looking at Chris.
Jasmine was scared for her brother, they understood each other and she didn't want anything to happen to him.
Chris ran full force at Jeremy, they both fought for the stick but their mother tapped the spoon three times on the tea cup.
Chris went down with ease, his body went stiff.
“ Oh, shit!”.
“ Is he hurt?” Missy asked.
“ Did you see him drop?”.
“ Yes, I did.”
Rose tied her hair up in a ponytail and came close to the family, Jasmine followed and stood beside her as they all stared down at Chris.
“ Jeremy grab his legs please, Dean you help me”.
“ I can get him alone” Jeremy replied, leaning down to pick up Chris.
“ No, you can't. You already damaged him enough” Missy replied.
“ Okay, fine” Jeremy said.
They lifted him with ease and begin to move him. “ Mind his head”.
They begin to talk more.
And Jasmine felt truly disgusted and wanted so badly to help the man out of the house, but she still had her part to play.
“ You were one of my favorites ” Rose said.
“ You hear that Chris, you were one of her favorites ” Jeremy taunts Chris.
They carried him out the room and downstairs all while Jasmine had this feeling in the back of her neck.
Something will happen and soon.
She just knows it.

As part of the AO3 Ship Stats project, this list shows the 100 most-posted pairing tags on Archive Of Our Own in the period August 2017 - July 2019.
This list was created by comparison of current number of fics with data gathered for the 2017 AO3 Ship Stats. Due to the stats not being collected last year, this post covers a two year period instead of the usual “this year’s top 100″ post.
There are 66 M/M pairings on the list, 17 F/M, 5 F/F, 9 Gen and 3 Other. (Please note that on AO3, ‘Name & Name’ indicates platonic or familial ‘Gen’ relationships, while ‘Name/Name’ is used for romantic and sexual pairings.)
Of the 200 names on the list, 28 are women and 3 are characters of ambiguous gender, down from 34 and 4 in the 2017 list. 64 are POC, and 11 are racially ambiguous, compared with 62 and 11 two years ago.
For more information about the AO3 Ship Stats project, please check out the accompanying FAQs. You might also be interested in the All-Time Top 100 Pairings and the Femslash Top 100 list. These stats are also available on AO3.

Fall TV Preview 2017: Time To Tune In
Fall TV Preview 2017 Time To Tune In 1. Biggie: The Life Of Notorious B.I.G. This documentary, authorized by Biggie's estate, explores the life and career of the rap icon. The miniseries features interviews with his widow Faith Evans, his mom Voletta Wallace and a who's who of rap legends, such as Nas, Jay-Z and Sean "Diddy" Combs. (Monday, September 4, 8 p.m., A&E) 2. The Deuce: Go back in time to New York City, specifically Times Square in the 1970s, when the area was a haven for porn. The show stars James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal and was written and created by David Simon ("The Wire"). (Sunday, September 10, 9 p.m., HBO) 3. The Orville: Seth MacFarlane created and stars in this live-action sci-fi comedy series that offers the "Family Guy" guru's take on the likes of "Star Trek." He plays the captain of the ship, who is paired with his ex-wife (Adrianne Palicki) as his first officer. (Sunday, September 10, 8 p.m., FOX/5) 4. The Vietnam War: The legendary documentarian Ken Burns and Lynn Novick tell the story of the Vietnam War in this 10-part, 18-hour series that culls from almost 80 interviews, tons of footage, and more. (Sunday, September 17, 8 p.m., WNET-13) 5. Star Trek: Discovery: Finally, after too many years, we get a new "Star Trek" series. The show has faced some issues, delays and staffing changes, but the early footage has been pretty great. The show, set before the original series, stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Spock's half-sister. (Sunday, September 24, 8:30 p.m., CBS/2, CBS All Access) 6. Young Sheldon: Spinning off from "The Big Bang Theory" comes this prequel following Sheldon Cooper at age 9 (Iain Armitage), a boy genius attending high school. The Brave: Anne Heche takes the lead in this new military drama about undercover soldiers tasked with saving innocents all around the globe. (Monday, September 25, 10 p.m., NBC/4) 9. The Good Doctor: Not a spinoff of "The Good Wife," this medical series, based on a South Korean show, is brought to the states from producer David Shore ("House") and certainly shares a bit DNA with "House." Freddie Highmore stars as a super surgeon with autism, working in pediatrics at a California hospital. (Monday, September 25, 10 p.m., ABC/7) 10. The Opposition with Jordan Klepper: Former "Daily Show" correspondent Jordan Klepper is the latest funnyman to take the former slot of "The Colbert Report," and aims to mock the alt-media on both sides. (Monday, September 25, 11:30 p.m., Comedy Central) 11. Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders: The long-running franchise hops onto the anthology trend with this new spinoff that will chronicle real-life cases, starting with the trail of Lyle and Erik Melendez. Starring Edie Falco, Anthony Edwards and Heather Graham. (Tuesday, September 26, 10 p.m., NBC/4) 12. Seal Team: David Boreanaz's post-"Bones" career begins with this military drama about one of the Navy SEALs' elite units, focusing on the tight group of soldiers as well as their family life. (Wednesday, September 27, 9 p.m., CBS/2) 13. Will & Grace: More than a decade since going off the air, the popular comedy starring Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes is revived, allowing you to catch up with the characters for this 12-episode run. (Thursday, September 28, 9 p.m., NBC/4) 14. Marvel's Inhumans: This Marvel series begins unusually - with the first two episodes getting a limited run in IMAX movie theaters starting on Friday, September 1 (and then run again on TV). The series follows the powerful Inhuman Royal Family and your sure-to-be favorite character is the giant teleporting dog named Lockjaw. (Friday, September 29, 8 p.m., ABC/7) 15. Ghosted: The awesome duo of Craig Robinson and Adam Scott take the leads in this series about a skeptic and a believer who are brought in by the government to explore unusual occurrences going on around Los Angeles. (Sunday, October 1, 8:30 p.m., FOX/5) 16. Wisdom of the Crowd: An inventor comes up with an app that helps crowdsource murder investigations to help find out who killed his daughter. (Sunday, October 1, 10 p.m., ABC/7) 18. 9JKL: This new comedy, based on the life of star Mark Feuerstein, follows a New York family living in three consecutive apartments. Feuerstein plays Josh Roberts, a divorced actor moving back to the Big Apple, taking an apartment wedged between ones inhabited by his parents on one side and his brother and sister-in-law on the other. I could’ve died right there, ‘cause he was right beside me | Chapter III
hi again! I finally finished this chapter aaa it took much longer than I expected! and yes I did make some more assumptions for the hypnosis, since we don’t get a lot in the movie, but i swear jeremy was there with missy when andre was re-hypnotised, so it’s pretty likely he and rose were trained in hypnosis!
Disclaimer: I do not claim to own any characters here, except my original ones
Synopsis: You married Jeremy Armitage on whim, but you had no clue what you were in for. Now, all you want is to get out — or die trying.
TWs: Substance Abuse

< Previous Chapter | Current Chapter: III | Next Chapter >
Of course, you continued using, but to not offend Jeremy’s feelings and that half-assed promise he made you keep, you only used either when he was away, when you were at a party, or whilst you were at work. And so, because withdrawal was a bitch that you did not want to go through, you were telling him you had to stay at work later, or that your dad needed your attendance at a company party. On occasion, he had insisted on going to parties with you, or he had popped in and visited you at your office. You’d have to message someone to hide that coke quickly. Thank god for his night shifts, you thought.
However, you did recall that both Rose and your dad had mentioned that Jeremy used to be addicted to heroin and shit, before Dean and Missy died, but then he put himself through rehab. Your dad encouraged you to do the same quite often. This always confused you, so you asked him about it in bed one night.
“Jeremy, were you addicted to heroin?”
He sighed, then replied, “Yes.”
“Then why are you so harsh on me using drugs? You know what it’s like, you’ve been through it before, so why are you such a…”
“Shh. Because they’re terrible. Because they kill people. Because they almost killed me. Because they could kill you. Do you understand that?”
“Is everyone who goes through rehab so fucking sanctimonious,” you scoffed, then tried to storm out of the room, before Jeremy tugged on your hand.
”No, we’re not done talking about this yet, sit back down, baby,” he ordered, then proceeded to spend the next half-hour lecturing you about the side effects of cocaine. You mentally noted to yourself to never mention anything about doing drugs to him again.
You two had been married for 4 months when Sally invited you to her birthday.
“Can I come?” Jeremy had asked you.
“Don’t you have a shit-ton of surgeries lined up?”
“Don’t worry about that shit, I’d cancel all of them for you. They won’t say anything, baby.”
“It’s just that I’m afraid it might be a tiny bit awkward if you’re there!”
He pouted, which made you feel like absolute shit, but he still relented. “Just stay safe, alright, baby?” he made sure to add, to which you nodded. You picked a party dress, picked a bag, and went over to the party.
You fully ignored his warnings the second you got there. “Hey, bitch, what took you so long?!” Sally greeted you, and the two of you immediately got to partying, doing lines off of anything and everything. You don’t know what time it was when you felt your chest begin to tighten, your body began to heat up, and your head began pounding painfully. It got so bad to the point where even Sally, high as a kite, noticed.
“Woah, there, are you ok?”
“Yeah, I’m fine, just need a break”
Sally touched you once, then seemed to shout, “Girl, you need a fucking ambulance!” You tried to protest, but by this point, you were too disoriented and weak too. The only thing you were thinking was please don’t let Jeremy see this.
It was just your luck that the closest hospital was Mt. Sinai.
The second Jeremy heard that his wife had been admitted for a cocaine overdose, he came running down to the hospital room you had been admitted to. And as much as you hated to admit it, you were scared shitless of him. As a child, you’d always thought he had a short temper, and as his wife, you were deadly afraid of triggering it. Still delirious, you were unable to judge his expression, and so you plead your case.
“Are you mad?”
“Shh. Shh. Just relax. Just relax. I’m not mad at you. I just want you to be okay. Alright? I’m not mad. Relax, baby. Relax.”
That calmed you down enough, but a certain part of you felt a growing sense of foreboding, that you wouldn’t be able to get out of this scot-free.
You were correct in assuming that, as it seemed like overnight, Sally and your friends who’d enabled you got scrubbed out of your phone, and you stopped getting invitations to their weekend parties. Moreover, Jeremy insisted on accompanying you to and from work, or to and from parties, as much as possible, like the fucking DEA. When you asked your dad’s secretary to buy you more from your dealer, he responded with “Sorry, Ma’am, Your husband didn’t approve,” and then you were faced with a lecture from Jeremy and the usual “I’m doing this because I love you.” What hurt the most was when you called your dad, and he only told you, “Listen to your husband, he knows what’s best for you.” Jeremy’s ever-present smirk seemed all the more infuriating that night.
The most painful part of everything was how he began getting much more controlling over your body and health, and the worst of this was when he said he’d hypnotize you for your cocaine addiction. Rose had told you about a technique Missy developed, which put people in what she called “The Sunken Place,” which was something you didn’t want to go through, so when he prepared everything to put you under, you objected,
“Wasn’t your mom the hypnotist?”
He smiled, “Yes, she was, but she also taught me and Rose how to do this. It’s pretty simple. You’ll see.”
“Shouldn’t you get a professional one?
“Relax. I know what I’m doing.”
He began stirring the tea, getting you emotionally vulnerable, getting you to talk about your parents, your weaknesses, and you felt like you couldn’t stop, even when you desperately wanted to. Sobbing, you felt your body begin to sink into the armchair. You couldn’t move. You looked to your husband, hoping he’d help you, hoping he’d stop whatever the fuck he was doing. He didn’t. He just smiled slightly at you, then clinked the teacup three times. The ground beneath you disappeared. It felt like you were drowning, slowly, agonizingly. Jeremy just smiled.
“Now, you’re in the sunken place.”

20 THOUGHTS: Two Weeks Doth a Season Make
ALRIGHT. So we’ve all played two games now, the Suns and Roos have played at least one outside of a swimming pool, we can start to make some long-lasting judgement.
The Bulldogs are staring down a full rebuild, Gold Coast have turned it around and can now match the personnel prowess of the Giants and going by Monday’s centre square performance Geelong must surely end up premiers?
April Premiers, righto. When the Melbourne supporters start to pack the ski gear into the back of the Land Rover, then let’s chat.
1. The Western Bulldogs. How much is that supposed post-flag offseason playing a role the best part of 18 months later? Sure, it was a 7th placed finish with an over and beyond September in their glory year, but again its two weeks, last week was colours lowered but we are not off their bus completely, save your wooden spoon bets.
2. This column continues to be buoyed by Fremantle. Much better on the weekend, their talented kids look fantastic, Blakely had 30, Ryan had 22 in defence, Brayshaw is showing a bit, Cerra kicked two goals, those two had nine tackles between them, Fyfe, Neale look good and Walters and Wilson are proper x-factors.
3. Also worth noting that we were originally wrong about the number of Perth games for the Dockers, it’s not just the standard eleven home games plus an away game to West Coast, its thirteen all up – the Gold Coast host Freo at Optus this week. Thirteen games in Perth, this is more than set up for the Dockers to rebound nicely in 2018.
4. Port look very industrious. Matched the Swans for grunt in their home opener and that’s two years in a row they've got that scalp. Back home this week for a soft kill with Brisbane, this is all shaping up very well at Alberton.
5. Clarko, moving people around, finding the right role, failing fast, motivation, development, all that – genius. This Hawthorn side still holds several guns in their arsenal, a number of premiership players to that matter, but the way he coaches that side extracts maximum performance out of the available resources, more than any other club going around clearly.
6. How about Geelong? Should have won although the umpires, Burgoyne's soft tissue and goal posts helped their cause too. But, Ablett 35 touches, Dangerfield 31, Selwood 29, teams are going to have to shut down one. Daniel Howe was on Selwood but didn't do enough. Ablett looks far too rejuvenated that it’s going to cause opponents issues if they don't curtail the engine room. If they can, the Cats don’t possess too much else.
7. If you didn’t know the backstory of the infamous starting three mids for Geelong, watched the game on Monday unencumbered, you would be excused for thinking Ablett is their best player. All the rage on Dangerfield vs. Martin, but if Ablett is fit enough (seemingly so) and has found a new lease on life being back home (clearly looks that way), maybe its back to 2015 and it’s a Ablett vs. Fyfe conversation again?
8. Tom Mitchell - 40 touches, two goals, four tackles. Supposedly on six Charlie votes, getting a tonne of exposure. Clayton Oliver though, 35 touches, eight tackles up in Brisbane. One is 25 next month, one is 21 in July. Still a no brainer for me.
9. Jaryd Roughead, big shout out to him. Cancer, overcome, and that speaks for itself on its own merits of course, but five shots on goal Monday, looked really good particularly late in the game, last year played 22 games coming back to footy and really picked up as the season came to an end kicking five in the final round. He has three seasons of over 70 goals in his career, only Buddy has done that as well, so he is a genuine star of the game who could really influence a Hawks side aiming to make finals and then do damage from there.
10. Good Friday - North and Footscray worked well last year, nothing against St Kilda (aside from their performance of course though, we'll cover that next) but last year felt like the making of something, great game, crowd over 40k, should have got another run. This threat of 'well performed sides' from now on is off the mark, I would go back to North and Footscray and give it three years. It should definitely stay with North, so in that case its commit to one regular opponent not rotate their opponents through.
11. So, the Saints. Did ok Round One then followed up with a stinker. Why? Membrey obviously had cricket finals so now that’s all wrapped up he can put the boots on. He averages four marks inside 50 a game, which is fantastic, but for such little impact. Nathan Brown is a good stopper, a premiership player, but is no longer a modern, effective defender and can be exploited. Jake Carlisle, has he gelled as a Saint yet? Not sure. He has had his disruptions but still looks a shadow, and then there's Paddy McCartin. Bless him, still only young, but he looks years off. Chuck in a midfield that yes, has Jack Steven, but Seb Ross and David Armitage don't hurt enough and it falls away big time. They were popping rubber bands at Josh Kelly for a reason.
12. Bryce Gibbs is just such a nice piece for this Crows side. 35 touches first up, 28 touches and a goal against Richmond, he is an All-Australian player if he stays fit. Amazing addition.
13. On All-Australian, going the early crow, or Magpie, but with some level of objectivity. Two games in Max Gawn would be the AA ruckman easily, no question, but Brodie Grundy, still only 23, in his 84th game had 20 touches, 45 hitouts, eight clearances, three tackles and kicked two straight. Their best player, most important player, perhaps both. He will be a strong AA contender all year.
14. The Pies were a little stiff on the weekend, two on the bench, no-one over six foot in the forward line, a little luck and it’s a big scalp, 1-1 into the Carlton game, it’s a whole new story. But the Pies, whilst without luck, at times the last couple seasons need to do better at making their own luck. As an example, Hawthorn definitely makes their own luck it seems, making moves, minimising errors, and they're maybe on the bounce back, perhaps overlapping Collingwood in the process? Jeremy Howe forward during games more often, things like that are required, can’t resign to same old same old, tried hard though..
15. Gerard Whateley interviews Nathan Buckley weekly on his radio program. Gerard was coy enough to raise Tom Lynch kicking eight on the weekend, and a normally very assured, calculated and not easily ambushed Buckley didn’t do a great job of avoiding any ‘reading between the lines’ from his responses. Short, sarcastic answers, deliberately avoiding the obvious reality, obvious narrative. Conceded that “I don’t think there's many clubs that would say that they can't do with a marking tall forward. He is a very aerobic, hard running tall forward as well – they don't grow on trees. I reckon he be well sought after.” It suggests the Pies think he is gettable, coming home, and they remain in the running which would not extend to too many clubs, or indeed have him.
16. Buddy watch, 12 goals already, I expect another decent bag in the Sydney Derby this weekend, talk of a ton this year is premature, but the Coleman-Brownlow double, don’t tell me you missed out when I lobbed it on all of you back in March. Utter. Value.
17. Credit to those down at Arden Street. The Kangas have bottomed out, got a tonne of cash, and yes, apparently asking Andrew Gaff how much he misses living in Melbourne, but Ben Brown up front, a lot of decent depth through the midfield, not a lot of star power, but it’s even, Robbie Tarrant is horrendously underrated, good kids, if you’re a Roos fan, stick fat, they’ll be ok.
18. A few non-footy to finish, let’s wrap the cricket up. Firstly, David Warner, couple concluding takeaways. He has ball-tampered at least throughout the South Africa series, that’s how Bancroft got caught. AB De Villiers got suspicious of Warner in the first few tests, texted his old captain now commentator Graeme Smith to watch Warner with the ball. Cluey to this Warner then courageously flipped his conduct onto Bancroft in Cape Town when the cameras would be following the ball from Paine to the bowler and low and behold, here we are.
19. Hiring Roxy Jacenko, a Sydney-based magazine PR pest, having wife Candice do a tell-all with News Limited, the delayed and then train wreck press conference, he will now be lost to Australian cricket and despite all the good he has a cricketer and person has done, he has made his bed he will now lie in it. Smith and Bancroft made progress to redemption upon arriving home, Warner has gone the other way sadly.
20. The Test Team from here? Head to England and play County Cricket. Yes the next nine months looks good, tests against minnows or against Asian countries at home, ripe conditions to succeed. But with an Ashes over there in 15 months, if I’m Burns, Renshaw, or anyone on the fringe, Kurtis Patterson, Jake Doran, get over to England, smash out a big county season with a mass of runs, and you’ll do well to be back there next year on an Ashes tour.

New Post has been published on https://www.madpicks.com/culture/tv/guide-promising-ridiculous-pilots-fall-2017-season/
A Guide To The Most Promising (And Ridiculous) Pilots For The Fall 2017 Season
There’s entirely too much television, and come this fall, there’s going to be even more. That’s when approximately 70 pilots hit the Big Four networks — ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC — and The CW, because your DVR isn’t already struggling enough. We haven’t actually seen any of the new series, but the plot descriptions and casts have been released, giving us an opportunity to make premature evaluations on our future favorite show. Using this guide, we highlighted five of the most promising-sounding pilots, and five of the most ridiculous. That’s not the same thing as “worst,” mind you. Is a drama about a “superstar magician” going to be any good? Probably not, but we can’t wait to watch it.
The Potentially Great
1. A.P. Bio (NBC)
A hilariously cynical Ivy League professor (Glenn Howerton) loses out on his dream job and goes to work as a high school biology teacher where he imposes his unorthodox teaching style and uses the kids to plot out revenge on those who wronged him.
Following the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 12 finale, Howerton told us that it’s “not entirely certain” whether he’s leaving the show or not. “I might be, but I might not be,” he confessed. “That really is the truth.” His availability largely depends on the success of A.P. Bio, which stars not only the Sunny co-developer in his first lead role in a network sitcom since That ’80s Show, but Patton Oswalt, who plays Principal Durbin, “a timid, petite, nervous mouse of a man.” The pilot was written by SNL‘s Mike O’Brien, and Seth Meyers is attached as an executive producer. It would be a huge surprise if A.P. Bio failed. We’ll have to wait to find out what that means for Sunny.
2. Ghosted (FOX)
A cynical skeptic (Craig Robinson) and a genius “true believer” in the paranormal (Adam Scott) are recruited by The Bureau Underground to look into the rampant “unexplained” activity in Los Angeles — all while uncovering a larger mystery that could threaten the existence of the human race.
This description reads kind of like a comedy version of The X-Files but with Adam Scott as David Duchovny and Craig Robinson as Gillian Anderson. I hope that was the entire pitch, now that I think about it.
“So you know The X-Files?”
“Yeah…”
“Well this is like that, but with Adam Scott from Parks and Rec as Mulder and Craig Robinson from The Office as Scully.”
“… as Scully?”
“Basically, yeah. And funny.”
“Okay, yeah. That’ll work.”
3. Household Name (ABC)
This multi-camera comedy follows a family who has an opportunity to buy the house of their dreams but under extremely abnormal circumstances: They must live with the previous owner, an eccentric, larger-than-life actress (Carol Burnett).
Multi-camera comedies have gotten a bad name in last 8-10 years as single-camera shows have seen their stars rise (Veep, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, etc. etc. etc.), but this one falls into the promising category for two reasons: Carol Burnett and Amy Poehler. Poehler is producing only, which is both good (she’s also a producer on Broad City, so there’s a track record here) and bad (whhhyyyy can’t I have a show where Carol Burnett plays Amy Poehler’s mom, preferable written by Mike Schur and Tina Fey and co-starring The Rock as their neighbor?). But still, just those two names make this one interesting.
4. Libby & Malcolm (ABC)
A blended family comedy about two polar-opposite political pundits (Felicity Huffman and Courtney B. Vance) who fall in love despite all odds and form an insta-family as well as a work partnership.
ABC has high hopes for Libby & Malcolm: it was the first official order of the pilot season. The network is probably right to be optimistic. The timely comedy stars American Crime‘s Felicity Huffman and American Crime Story‘s Courtney B. Vance, who won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his convincing performance as Johnnie Cochran, and comes from black-ish creator Kenya Barris. That’s a lot of crime, and even more talent.
5. Me, Myself, & I (CBS)
A single-camera comedy examining one man’s life over a 50-year span. The show will focus on three distinct periods in his life – as a 14-year-old in 1991, a 40-year-old (Bobby Moynihan) in the present day, and a 65-year-old (John Larroquette) in 2042.
This show had me at “Bobby Moynihan and John Larroquette playing different versions of the same character.” Also, please note the name “Jaleel White” six-deep in the cast list. Will it be any good? I have no idea. Could it all go to crap before even making it to the air? Of course. But am I intrigued? Very.
The Definitely Goofy
1. Deception (ABC)
When his career is ruined by scandal, superstar magician Cameron Black (Jack Cutmore-Scott) has only one place to turn to practice his art of deception, illusion, and influence — the FBI. He’ll become the world’s first consulting illusionist, helping the government solve crimes that defy explanation and trap criminals by using deception.
If there’s one thing I have always said about network television, it’s that there are not nearly enough shows about disgraced magicians working with the FBI. Sure, The Mentalist is kind of that. And Psych was sort of that, almost. But that’s not the point. The point is that this is happening and the blurb contains the phrase “the world’s first consulting illusionist,” which makes me so happy I might just explode right here in my seat. I hope a disgraced magician investigates my death. No, I demand it. Now that I know it’s an option, I can’t accept anything else.
The only downside here, and it is a small one, is that I joked about this blurb on Twitter and someone replied with a “You’re off the case, turn in your badge and wand joke,” and I was immediately furious I didn’t think of it first.
2. The Get (CBS)
A team of tireless internet journalists pursues and exposes stories of injustice using their unconventional investigative techniques in today’s anything-goes world of reporting.
The first thing I, an internet journalist, do when I wake up in the morning is go to the bathroom. Then I have a quick breakfast, maybe some healthy oatmeal or Pop-Tarts (it’s Pop-Tarts), while I scroll through Twitter, Facebook, CNN, Reddit, the Hollywood Reporter, etc. When I find something that piques my interest, I write about it. Before I know it, it’s three in the afternoon, I haven’t left the bed (except to go to the bathroom again and maybe eat some leftover pizza for lunch), and I’m still wearing the same pair of nasty gym shorts that I fell asleep in. I hope that’s what The Get is about. Anything goes!
3. Insatiable (The CW)
When a disgraced, dissatisfied civil lawyer-turned-beauty pageant coach (Dallas Roberts) takes on a vengeful, bullied teenager as his client, he has no idea what he’s about to unleash upon the world.
Look, anyone can be anything. Are you an airline pilot who wants to serve fast food burgers? You can do it! Are you a janitor at a fancy Boston college who thinks you’re meant to be a rocket scientist, or whatever happens to Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting? Why not! Insatiable takes this idea to the extreme. As far as premises go, “civil lawyer-turned-beauty pageant coach” is a thing of beauty. It’s like the creator couldn’t settle on the professions, so she randomly flipped through the phonebook and landed on “civil lawyer” and “beauty pageant coach.” (I don’t care if it’s “inspired” by a real-life story — it’s still hilarious.) If Insatiable doesn’t work, everyone can try again next year on Unquenchable, about a marine biologist-turned-monster truck driver.
4. Wisdom of the Crowd (CBS)
Based on the Israeli format of the same name, and inspired by the notion that a million minds are better than one, a tech innovator (Jeremy Piven) creates a cutting-edge crowdsourcing hub to solve his own daughter’s murder, as well as revolutionizing crime solving in San Francisco.
Jeremy Piven plays a billionaire who is solving his daughter’s murder with science. I freaking love it. I can see him now, butting heads with the old school cops who wants to solve crime the old fashioned way, hitting the streets and working sources and such. “
PIVEN: Umm, actually, my app has already triangulated the killer’s location.
OLD SCHOOL COP: What’s this guy talkin’ about?
PIVEN: [Jeremy Piven face]
5. Young Sheldon (CBS)
The series follows The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage) at the age of 9, living with his family in East Texas and going to high school.
The Big Bang Theory is a very popular show. The actors have been nominated for a million Emmys (and made millions of dollars), and despite being 10 seasons in, 19 million people regularly tune in to see what sort of wacky misadventures Howard and Rajesh are getting into this week. That’s a lot of millions. I get why CBS executives want to keep the Big Bang train a-rollin’ — especially with the stars getting increasingly expensive — but to paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, they were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. They shouldn’t, but they did, and now something called Young Sheldon will probably bring in five times as many viewers as The Good Place. Maybe we’re living in the Bad Place?
The Potentially Great and Definitely Goofy
1. Untitled Marc Cherry Project (ABC)
Ruby Adair (Reba McEntire), the sheriff of colorful small town Oxblood, KY, finds her red state outlook challenged when a young FBI agent of Middle Eastern descent is sent to help her solve a horrific act. They form an uneasy alliance as Ruby takes the agent behind the lace curtains of this Southern Gothic community to meet an assortment of bizarre characters, each with a secret of their own.
I’m not sure exactly how this will play out but all I can picture right now is the first season of True Detective but with Reba McEntire as Rust Cohle. It’s all you can picture now, too, I bet. You’re very welcome.
The One Show Each Writer Cares Way Too Much About
Brian: Dynasty
I’m interested in Dynasty for two reasons:
One, it’s produced by Josh Schwartz, who created The O.C. and has solid history when it comes to fun dramas about rich families with problems.
Two, the last time someone tried to reboot a popular ’80s show about a troubled wealthy family, it was TNT’s version of Dallas, which gave us the single greatest GIF in TV history: Judith Light snorting cocaine at a rodeo.
TNT
Josh: Every “Untitled” series
Did I watch a single episode of AMC’s Untitled Billy Corgan Wrestling Project?
Nope.
Do I know if Untitled Billy Corgan Wrestling Project even made it to air?
No clue.
But three years later, am I still obsessed with Untitled Billy Corgan Wrestling Project?
Of course. Because it’s called Untitled Billy Corgan Wrestling Project!
I’m actually fascinated by all Untitled [Name or Collection of Words] Projects, and this fall has some gems. There’s the aforementioned Untitled Marc Cherry Project, as well as Untitled Paul William Davies Project, Untitled Single Dad Project, Untitled Jenny Lumet Project, Untitled Navy SEAL Project, Untitled Marvel Action-Adventure Series, and Untitled University Project. Do I plan on watching any of these shows? Other than the Marc Cherry one and maybe whatever Marvel is brewing, of course not. But would I check out Untitled Single Dad Project if it stayed with that title, and not switch to something generic, like Bad Dad? You bet. Also, #BringBackUntitledBillyCorganWrestlingProject.
