Yeah, through online articles/youtube videos in regards security breach
Yeah, around Feb 2021
My main purpose is to attend classes
Discord / Microsoft Teams
It was okay, quality (zoom classes / video camera and feedback / compared to skype - video feedback is bad when there are many people in one session) is pretty fair / very organizational use but not private use
When hosting a video calls on zooms - break out zooms - make people go in them and personal talks is pretty welldone / can create our own channels for whatever projects
Neutral
No
Function - satisfies purpose

Ryan Campbell / Designer Lead at Catch Design / 36
Work FH / 2 days a week / tuesdays and fridays / work in the office rest of those days / at home work from small desk / at work : better situations / work off screen at both places / fuzzy internet at home / office: zoom calls in board rooms/ meeting rooms
Macbook Pro / Android Huawei P20 :uses zoom on both devices
Yes, I use zoom at work / make decision between Micro Team and Zoom/ Zoom won/ Director made decision/ I got to know about Zoom at Catch Design : May 2020
Lockdown Zoom with friends quiz night - social purpose /
Main purposes : internal meetings / external client / some use team which is awkward / social purposes to catch up / corporate updates done via zoom
The 40 minute time limit is really annoying (bad experience pissed me off)
Average - middle of the road - nothing amazing - found it hard to start a meeting / not intuitive / scheduling a new meeting & new meeting is confusing / sharing links is confusing (text forms ) / should really be one piece of text not a novel or words / copy and paste is confusing because there are
Closing a zoom call (leave a meeting - and then quick leave (do you really want to leave?) / makes it awkward when in front of other (pause ) : worst user experience u cld possibly create - two step leaving journey = awkward pause / less possible to accidentally close the meeting . Security(should be chooseable) / Waiting room is auto ticked (WHY?) / Creating video conference call / casual meet ups 50%(majority) / client meetings 50% - so don’t want hardcore security like waiting rooms
Basic functionality works for video / video background filters / (beautifier mode) / video filters is great (only thing i like about zoom) / does its job
A lot of frustration / punishing!!! / very painful / double close is painful / positive
Single click close / intuitive point of view / just does video conferencing = a lot of annoyances / Zoom works well with external parties / Teams can only be within Teams / Audio is an issue : trying to connect bluetooth headphones is difficult (if could be done well solving issues for bluetooth connected devices - easy connect and disconnect ) shareability - sharing a zoom link it hard = feels like 30 different time zones / 3 different hyper links / not all of them are meeting links / easy to share screen /
Social events : really hard to have everyone to have everyone visible on screen / layout is restricted / more than 8 ppl - can only see 5 at a time / on mobile is worse - need to change layout / connectivity / chats algd / doesn’t stand out that much / google meets : microsoft teams / facebook calling 1:1 communication /

Meetings / conferences
It was very quick, but interface isn;t that appealing. Has improved npw, the view itself is PC/ easy to start meetings / easy to invite / can be attached to google calendar
The speed of the software / interface: not that much : using Zoom - more focused on functionality
Got used to it, understood how app works / frustration with iPad because it is hard to start meetings with the iPad Zoom
The amount of time setting for the meeting / in hang out you can set a meeting for an hour/ for zoom there is a maximum limit if not pro user / background filters / notification reminder / (great!!)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sam / 28 / Tech LEad / Architecting application / Developing Application
Half of the week in office by team / half of the week work from home
Macbook Pro 13 inch
Yes, Forced to use it for work.
Yes, Just Before lockdown, iPad /
Meetings - team aligned on project guidelines / social zoom calls over lock down - team cohesive, gather requirements / find out and gather information / show product etc.
First impression : wasn’t a big fan at start, before installed - big security breach (no good first impression), as I got used to using it, good video streaming expereince - interface : didn’t find it user-friendly (clunky), I would prefer Google Meet (sharing links / less extra step)
Video streaming itself is very good / good quality / core feature is great
Frustration / installation amongst people
To get used to zoom - couple weeks -
Google Meets - runs in the browser - click the link - straight into the feature. (extra step / user journey)
Used zoom for presentation / after research / professional development / kinda education / knowledge sharing with the team / collaborative environment / pretty easy / screen share -
iPad Zoom interface / trying to join from ipad (look into it)
Remote Control Panel for Zoom (connected TV). Consistency amongst interfaces with different devices.

Interview 1: Grace Chey, 21, Product Design Student
1. I am a 20 year old full time student in my last year of studying industrial product design.
2. I am either at home studying by myself or is at school (going to lectures, workshops and labs) surrounded by school peers.
3. iPad, Macbook
4/ 5. Yes, I was first introduced to zoom by my school (University of Canterbury) last year for online learning during lockdown
6. For lectures and meetings for group projects
7. At first I found it very complicated as it was a new software for me and I found the downloading and logging in process was very long
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interview 2: Saem, 35, Work and Income CSR, Studylink Officer
1. Work and Income customer service representative/ StudyLink Officer
2. Call centre office environment or working from home office
3. iPhone, P.C.
4. Yes, during NZ’s nationwide lockdown - through online media and family
5. Yes, for a job interview
6. Work purposes
7. Easy to use, simple intuitive interface
8. Zoom meeting calls - being able to easily have group zoom meetings
9. Being able to easily see who is in the meeting from a small device like a smartphone
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interview 3: Ashley Jeong, 23, UX Intermediate Designer at Flight Digital
1. I’m a UXUI designer at a marketing agency. Have been working at the agency for 2 and a half years. I am 23 years old.
2. Physical environment at work is very spacious and well equipped with everything I need. Workwise, I have client meetings and workshops in our meeting rooms or at my desk doing work on the computer.
3. I use a 27inch imac as my primary screen and a smaller secondary LG screen at work. 13inch macbook at home.
4. Yes I know Zoom. I came to know Zoom when I visited Korea last year when covid first hit and church had to be done on Zoom.
5. Yes, beginning of Feb 2020.
6. Only use it for church. Have used it once for work because the client insisted we use Zoom. Usually use google hangouts at work.
7. Kinda confusing at first. Mostly because video meetings weren’t the norm before covid.
8. Fast access to the zoom room once I had the room code and password.
9. The thumbs up or hand wave emoji is nice to use when everyone is on mute.
10. To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of Zoom. It used to be way faster but it’s very slow these days and laggy compared with google meet. I find the interface for google meets is easier and straight forward.
11. Nope. Currently doing masters and if we have class online we use gomeeting.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interview 4: Becky Jeong, 21, English Literature & Media Student
1. I am a 21 year old university student with a part time job. Studying a Bachelor of Arts degree, in my last year.
2. I go to my part time job every day, a Japanese restaurant on Upper Queen Street. I also attend my university classes. I go to the City Fitness gym in Albany a few times a week, and also attend church meetings or services.
3. My Macbook air
4. Yes I do. When we went into our first lockdown, we had to use it for uni classes and church.
5. Yes I have used it before. My first experience was when we had to have online classes for university.
6. We don’t use it for uni anymore, but we still use it at church for our daily 9pm prayer meetings.
7. It felt very unfamiliar because I hadn’t used some kind of video calling service in such a long time, especially in large groups.
8. Screen share was super helpful. I also like gallery view where we can see everyone rather than just the speaker.
9. At times I felt more connected to people because we could meet more frequently on Zoom more than we would meet in real life.
10. I don’t know about similar software. I only ever used video calling on my phone for brief calls and Zoom is already much more advanced than that.
11. Yes, we used it at uni. The features that were really useful were obviously the screen sharing so that we could see what the lecturer was referring to as they were talking, as well as the breakout rooms. We were in a class of 200, and then used the breakout room feature to split into groups of 4 or 5 to have discussions before coming back together. These features made online classes a lot easier and manageable. The chat feature was also useful because if a student had a question, we did not have to turn on our mic in the middle of class, but instead just ask on the chat.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interview 5: Sarah Lee, 20, Engineering Student
1. Student, 20 years
3. Laptop
4. Through others
5. Mid 2020
6. Attending online conference and meetings
7. awkward and uncomfortable lol
9. group meetings across the country and having new encounters from different cities
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Updated interview questions (student + lecturer)
1. Tell me about yourself, your occupation and your age
2. What is your study/work environment like?
3. What device do you mostly use on a daily basis for educational purposes?
4. Do you know what Zoom is? Have you used Zoom before? If so, how did you come to know about Zoom? When was your first Zoom experience?
5. Have you encountered using Zoom the 2020 lockdown? Could you please tell us about your experience?
6. What is your main purpose of using Zoom?
7. What was your first impression of using Zoom?
8. What was the feature you were most satisfied with during your experience?
9. What are some memorable feelings / situations you have experienced while using Zoom?
10. Would you bring a feature from any software into Zoom? What would it be and why?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Harper
1. Harper, born in 1997. Currently studying at AUT
2. Study desk set up at home, university library because its newly designed and fancy
3. Laptop (macbook pro), imac in level 4 WE
4. Yes, I have used it before. During the lockdown my tutor introduced Zoom to us for virtual classes since we couldn’t come in physically.
5. Nothing really special but being able to switch between gallery/speak view, chat, break out rooms is good. At first I felt comfortable because personally physical meetings are uncomfortable. But when I had to present my work on Zoom, I was stressed because sometimes the audio didn't work.
7. Very simple and straightforward. I learned to use all of it in 1 class
8. Reactions and emojis. Also the pop out screen that minimises when you are in a different window,
10. In blackboard there is a whiteboard feature where everyone can write something down.
Describe Zoom in 1 word - ‘futuristic’.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Soumya, studying interaction design, 33 years old
2. Have own study space/desk at home
3. Laptop and phone: macbook pro and iphone
4. Yes I have. Started using it first last year due to uni through covid lockdown march 2020.
5. My online experience was ok for the first time. It was engaging because of the break out rooms. It felt like in class where the lecturer jumped from each table. Peer to peer communication was good. It was quite awkward at times because only 2-3 people turned their cameras on, so very little social interaction.
6. I use it for collab projects with my uni partner
7. Simple, functions are easy, but it would be better if it straight away shared the screen if you clicked on the button (right now there are too many steps)
8. I was quite happy because I could finish and continue with my papers, way better than blackboard because you can't see who is speaking and all of the members. Zoom you can see everyone in the meeting
9. Share screen, reaction emojis are good as it lets people engage just like they are in a classroom
10. The break out rooms were great as I was able to have the 1:1 discussions and have engagement with the lecturer just as in real life. It was nice to have the time to catch up with classmates before class started.
11. For the chat, it would be nice to follow the facebook messenger system where there are separate chat boxes for different people. The current zoom chat system is confusing and can accidentally send to wrong people.
1 word to describe: Reliable
For next week
You should have completed your research
You should have synthesized your findings into theme, then insights
You should have several draft HMW statements to review. You will have some data!
Be thinking about how you can present your research visually for your formative poster.

Coronavirus crisis: 100,000 dead in 101 days, half of them in just a week - india news
In the 101 days since the world first heard about the mysterious new virus behind Covid-19, a person has, on average, succumbed to the illness every 90 seconds. On Friday, the toll surpassed 100,000, a milestone that could well be dwarfed soon at the current rate of the pandemic’s growth: fatalities have doubled and the total number of infections grew by 600,000 in the last week alone, according to the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Research Center. In India, national capital Delhi recorded 183 new cases on Friday – the largest single-day jump. Most of these (154), however, were related to the Nizamuddin cluster from where roughly 2,300 have been taken to hospitals and quarantine centres. Overall, the country recorded 855 new cases and 19 new deaths, taking total infections to 7,549 and fatalities to 250.The numbers, which came on the 39th day of the outbreak in India, represent a steady flow that, while not ballooning in the way they did in many populated countries, threaten to quickly go out of hand. In western countries, the virus tore through in approximately six weeks: the United States and Europe together account for over 77% of all infections and close to 87% of all deaths.“The attention now should be on lower and middle income countries like India and the sooner you start testing at a widespread level, the better you will know what is going on in your country,” said Bhramar Mukherjee, the head of biostatistics at University of Michigan. “The acceleration curve in India looks completely different than other countries – India is doubling infections in about six days while a country like UK takes three days,” she said, adding that it is important to determine whether this is because of lack of reporting or other factors such as temperature and genetics.India is at present in the middle of a three-week lockdown that has brought the economy to a halt and led to a massive spike in unemployment, but is also credited with averting an endemic crisis. The government is likely to retain much of the curbs, maybe even extend the lockdown which is scheduled to end on April 14. “From an epidemiological perspective, you start seeing an appreciable drop in case counts when you lock down for 42-56 days but that may not be practical. You have to come out of a lockdown soon,” added Mukherjee, who is among a dozen academicians from three American universities studying the disease’s progress in India and other nations.Since the middle of March, some of the biggest economies of the world have locked down their cities and are now struggling with the question of when to lift some of these curbs and let industries restart to fend off further economic devastation. The head of the International Monetary Fund warned on Thursday the global economy is headed for the worst recession since the Great Depression of 1930s, and the UN labour organisation said 195 million full-time jobs could be lost in the second quarter alone. The rate of unemployment in India shot up from 8.41% to 23.81% in the week when the country was forced into a near-complete shutdown, according to estimates by Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy.Scientists and researchers say the way forward for the world will require new, focussed steps to enforce social distancing that are more sophisticated than population-wide lockdowns. “It is important that we start to think of exiting lockdowns as combination of policies. People will need to be allowed greater social flexibility and there will need to be innovative solutions, such as contact tracing through mobile apps,” said Steven Riley, professor of Infectious Disease Dynamics at Imperial College London, in a video published on Thursday by the varsity’s Abdul Latif Jameel Institute for Disease and Emergency Analytics. On Friday, Apple and Google -- who together control the mobile phone software market almost entirely -- said on Friday that they will work together to create contact tracing technology that aims to slow the spread of the coronavirus by allowing users to opt into a system that catalogs other phones they have been near. They will work together on technology that will allow mobile devices to trade information via Bluetooth connections to alert people when they have been in close proximity with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.In India, authorities will also need to focus on mobilisation of resources since infections are likely to peak in different regions at different times. “We have seen that hot spots go through peaks at different times. India will need to find a way to move resources rapidly so that health care systems don’t collapse,” said Mukherjee. “Our lives are going to be constrained and restricted for a while everywhere in the world. It is important to be intelligent how we emerge from this, because cases will rise when we do and instead of having pickets, we need to build check dams to handle if there is a flood of cases,” she added. The unprecedented crisis has been met with unparalleled efforts in the scientific community that has raced to develop a vaccine to protect people from Sars-Cov-2 , the pathogen that causes Covid-19. According to an analysis in the journal Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, five vaccine candidates are in phase 1 clinical trials and 73 in exploratory or preclinical stages. A vaccine, the analysis says, is likely to be ready in early 2021 – the earliest estimate available at present. At the same time, however, there are many aspects of the pathogen that are still to be known. South Korean officials said on Friday that they had launched an epidemiological investigation after 91 patients thought cleared of the new coronavirus had tested positive again. Jeong Eun-kyeong, director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), said the virus may have been “reactivated” rather than the patients being re-infected.Other Korean experts said patients had likely “relapsed” rather than been re-infected and that false test results could also be at fault, or remnants of the virus could still be in patients’ systems but not be infectious or of danger to the host or others.(With inputs from Reuters) Read the full article

Everyone is under a lockdown these days because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Well, every now and then you would have heard people saying that they want some free time and all. It turns out that now they have some free time, definitely not under the most comfortable circumstances but still we now have plenty of free time. And one of the major problems that we have right now is that we do not have much to do in this free time.
But don’t worry, We got you covered in these hard times, Here are some useful things that will help you be productive in this lockdown.
Useful Things To Do in Lockdown
What to do at home amid lockdown?
Many people from the working class already have themselves sorted with Work from Home but what about people who do not have anything productive?
Before doing any of these make sure you sanitize your phone properly. We already have written a decent tutorial to do so, make sure you follow that: How to Sanitize Your Phone in 5 Easy Steps
Here are somethings that you should definitely try:
Learn a new Language
With my personal experience, I can say that it feels so good to learn a new language and then flaunt it in front of your friends. And on successful completion of this task, your friends will definitely get shocked when you will greet them not by saying hello but saying Hola! That’d be so much fun. And being multilingual will definitely be good on your skills resume.
Some Useful Apps for Learning New Languages
Duolingo
Duolingo: Learn English Free (Free+, Google Play) →
Just like the name, Duolingo is a multilingual app where you can learn languages like Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese and more. Very simple to use, just download the app on your smartphone, create an account and you are good to go. It also offers premium courses at low costs under which you can take tests and further sharpen your language domain.
Drops
Drops: Language learning – learn Spanish and more! (Free+, Google Play) →
The application is pretty much similar to Duolingo, just the pricings are different with some more languages to learn. It has various tutorials online to help you learn with ease. Drop lets you play with language which is very fun so if you are looking to have fun at learning, Drop is your to-go option. It operates on Android, and iPhones and on web browsers too.
Babbel
Babbel – Learn Languages – Spanish, French & More (Free+, Google Play) →
Babbel is the most diverse language learning platform out there. You can literally learn all the common languages around the world. The best feature is that it allows some online free demo teaching that is not available with the other two.
Memrise
Learn Languages with Memrise – Spanish, French (Free+, Google Play) →
Memrise is the most searched for language learning. It offers free language learning. Not the best but definitely good as you are getting for free. You can learn a language from scratch, here on this platform. It offers ranking based on online tests. You should definitely give it a try.
Soul-Enhancing by Performing Meditation
I am pretty sure you have seen that quote recently that says, “If you can’t go outside, Go inside”. This quote is very true, as nothing is more soothing than going in a deep state of mind. You will feel less stressed, very positive and it will also improve concentration. Start your morning with meditation and you will definitely be productive throughout the day.
Useful Apps for Meditation
The Mindfulness App
The Mindfulness App: relax, calm, focus and sleep (Free+, Google Play) →
The Mindfulness App is perfect for everyone. From Beginners to Experts, it has stuff for everyone. It creates a perfect environment for your meditation routine. It has a timer ranging from 5-30 minutes. It is your path for concentration and positivity.
Headspace
Headspace: Meditation & Sleep (Free+, Google Play) →
This app literally creates a space between you and your soul. With peaceful soundtracks that one can hear before and after bed, this is the best app to switch to.
Calm
Calm – Meditate, Sleep, Relax (Free+, Google Play) →
This has to be the best of all three apps. Rated five stars on both Android and iPhone. It features bedtime stories from great voices with which you will feel inner peace. You should definitely give it a try.
Further Reading
It is also the time where you can be more fit than ever. With Restricted outing and no exposure to junk food, you can definitely achieve your fitness goals and stay healthy. I suggest you download these apps and have them synchronized with your fitness devices. And if you do not have a fitness tracker, you can enter the data manually.
Google Fit App
Google Fit: Health and Activity Tracking (Free, Google Play) →
Water Reminder
Water Reminder – Remind Drink Water (Free, Google Play) →
Also, it’s one of those times, where you can watch some really good shows and movies on various platforms.
Now everyone knows about the popular ones. But here are some of the not so popular ones that are true gems.
Movies
Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers(Netflix)
5.5
Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers (2018) 1h 37min | Documentary | 4 December 2018 (USA)

TNC Group’s Official Event Launch Unveiled Buyaladdin Shopping Mall...
TNC IT Solutions Group (TNC) is a global blockchain development firm based in Dubai, UAE. With the vision of uniting the cryptocurrency world, TNC has formally introduced the company’s major objectives, business strategies, and synergized ecosystem during the official event launch yesterday, July 16, at the Rockefeller Center in New York. The opening keynote for the event was delivered by the Free Republic of Liberland’s Global Honorary Ambassador-at-Large Steven Melnik. He spoke about Liberland’s vision of becoming a crypto-and-blockchain powered society that runs within a decentralized government, collects voluntary taxes, and promotes personal and economic freedom to its citizens. In line with TNC’s goal, Liberland will benefit from TNC’s services on blockchain consulting, and will receive comprehensive assistance in integrating blockchain technology and finding global standard developers suitable for the micronation’s development. Among the highlights of the event was the presentation done by TNC’s CEO Bruce Jeong. According to Bruce, TNC was established in October 2018. It currently has global branches around different parts of the world including the UK, Singapore, South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Russia, and India, among others. With its four main objectives being Token Development, Blockchain Solutions, Blockchain Academy, and Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A), TNC has built business strategies in collaboration with many industry experts and corporate leaders. Currently, TNC is in the process of appraisals and evaluation. With substantial resources, they have evaluated more than 1,700 companies listed on CoinMarketCap. After careful consideration, TNC will select 500 companies with the most potential to succeed within the crypto industry. Moreover, the TNC token that will be developed soon would be integrated as one of the payment methods on the Buyaladdin shopping mall platform. Having said that, Buyaladdin is on its way to gathering 100 million Aladdin Wallet app users through TNC’s M&A project. A significant part of the TNC event launch was Buyaladdin’s public announcement and live demonstration. Buyaladdin aims to be a leading online shopping platform that provides an extraordinary e-shopping experience through cryptocurrencies. Resolving the issue of online transactions and high transaction fees, shoppers can conveniently shop online using crypto through Buyaladdin. The Buyaladdin app will go live in October, and shopping enthusiasts, as well as crypto users can begin online shopping within major e-retailers integrated within the app. This global marketplace will include Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Rakuten, Lazada, and many more which will be added in the near future. Alongside this business venture, TNC has also invested $5,000,000 to a newly-released digital wallet application — Aladdin Wallet. The funds will contribute to further developments within the app, ensuring fast and secure crypto transactions made possible through its built-in chat messaging function, and protection from security threats. Aladdin Wallet users will have the privilege to use the beta-version of the Buyaladdin app in September. Reaching out to expert consultants from different sectors around the world, TNC will certainly pave its way to success in no time. Respected individuals like Bruce Porter, Hideo Ito, Clara Florey, Arben Kane, and Misha Hanin are among the mentioned trusted advisors who believe in TNC’s vision. Indeed, with TNC’s event successfully launched in New York, more updates are expected to be heard about this company. Having ambitious projects and goals in mind, TNC will make a huge difference in the tech innovation industry — and everyone should be ready for it. ------- Information provided via press release Distributed by Global Crypto Press Association Press Release For Blockchain Industry Service. //<![CDATA[ (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); //]]>

Update: Twitter’s response has been added to the end of this post.
A new study by Amnesty International and Element AI attempts to put numbers to a problem many women already know about: that Twitter is a cesspool of harassment and abuse. Conducted with the help of 6,500 volunteers, the study, billed by Amnesty International as “the largest ever” into online abuse against women, used machine-learning software from Element AI to analyze tweets sent to a sample of 778 women politicians and journalists during 2017. It found that 7.1%, or 1.1 million, of those tweets were either “problematic” or “abusive,” which Amnesty International said amounts to one abusive tweet sent every 30 seconds.
On an interactive website breaking down the study’s methodology and results, the human rights advocacy group said many women either censor what they post, limit their interactions on Twitter, or just quit the platform altogether: “At a watershed moment when women around the world are using their collective power to amplify their voices through social media platforms, Twitter’s failure to consistently and transparently enforce its own community standards to tackle violence and abuse means that women are being pushed backwards towards a culture of silence.”
Amnesty International, which has been researching abuse against women on Twitter for the past two years, signed up 6,500 volunteers for what it refers to as the “Troll Patrol” after releasing a report earlier this year that described Twitter as a “toxic” place for women.
In total, the volunteers analyzed 288,000 tweets sent between January to December 2017 to the 778 women studied, who included politicians and journalists across the political spectrum from the United Kingdom and United States. Politicians included members of the U.K. Parliament and the U.S. Congress, while journalists represented a diverse group of publications including The Daily Mail, The New York Times, Guardian, The Sun, gal-dem, Pink News, and Breitbart.
The Troll Patrol’s volunteers, who come from 150 countries and range in age from 18 to 70 years old, received training about constitutes a problematic or abusive tweet. Then they were shown anonymized tweets mentioning one of the 778 women and asked if the tweets were problematic or abusive. Each tweet was shown to several volunteers. In addition, Amnesty International said “three experts on violence and abuse against women” also categorized a sample of 1,000 tweets to “ensure we were able to assess the quality of the tweets labelled by our digital volunteers.”
The study defined “problematic” as tweets “that contain hurtful or hostile content, especially if repeated to an individual on multiple occasions, but do not necessarily meet the threshold of abuse,” while “abusive” meant tweets “that violate Twitter’s own rules and include content that promote violence against or threats of people based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.”
Then a subset of the labelled tweets was processed using Element AI’s machine-learning software to extrapolate the analysis to the total 14.5 million tweets that mentioned the 778 women during 2017. (Since tweets weren’t collected for the study until March 2018, Amnesty International notes that the scale of abuse was likely even higher because some abusive tweets may have been deleted or made by accounts that were suspended or disabled). Element AI’s extrapolation produced the finding that 7.1% of tweets sent to the women were problematic or abusive, amounting to 1.1 million tweets in 2017.
Black, Asian, Latinx, and mixed race women were 34% more likely to be mentioned in problematic or abusive tweets than white women. Black women in particular were especially vulnerable: they were 84% more likely than white women to be mentioned in problematic or abusive tweets. One in 10 tweets mentioning black women in the study sample was problematic or abusive, compared to one in 15 for white women.
“We found that, although abuse is targeted at women across the political spectrum, women of color were much more likely to be impacted, and black women are disproportionately targeted. Twitter’s failure to crack down on this problem means it is contributing to the silencing of already marginalized voices,” said Milena Marin, Amnesty International’s senior advisor for tactical research, in the statement.
Breaking down the results by profession, the study found that 7% of tweets that mentioned the 454 journalists in the study were either problematic or abusive. The 324 politicians surveyed were targeted at a similar rate, with 7.12% of tweets that mentioned them problematic or abusive.
Of course, findings from a sample of 778 journalists and politicians in the U.K. and U.S. is difficult to extrapolate to other professions, countries, or the general population. The study’s findings are important, however, because many politicians and journalists need to use social media in order to do their jobs effectively. Women, and especially women of color, are underrepresented in both professions, and many stay on Twitter simply to make a statement about visibility, even though it means dealing with constant harassment and abuse. Furthermore, Twitter’s API changes means many third-party anti-bullying tools no longer work, as technology journalist Sarah Jeong noted on her own Twitter profile, and the platform has yet to come up with tools that replicate their functionality.
For a long time I used blocktogether to automatically block accounts younger than 7 days and accounts with fewer than 15 followers. After Twitter’s API changes, that option is no longer available to me.
— sarah jeong (@sarahjeong) December 18, 2018
A friend coded up a way for me to automatically mute people who tweeted certain trigger words for me. (Like, say, “gook.”) This is also no longer available to me because of API changes.
— sarah jeong (@sarahjeong) December 18, 2018
Amnesty International’s other research about abusive behavior towards women on Twitter includes a 2017 online poll of women in 8 countries, and an analysis of abuse faced by female members of Parliament before the UK’s 2017 snap election. The organization said the Troll Patrol isn’t about “policing Twitter or forcing it to remove content.” Instead, the organization wants the platform to be more transparent, especially about how the machine-learning algorithms it uses to detect abuse.
Because the largest social media platforms now rely on machine learning to scale their anti-abuse monitoring, Element AI also used the study’s data to develop a machine-learning model that automatically detects abusive tweets. For the next three weeks, the model will be available to test on Amnesty International’s website in order to “demonstrate the potential and current limitations of AI technology.” These limitations mean social media platforms need to fine-tune their algorithms very carefully in order to detect abusive content without also flagging legitimate speech.
“These trade-offs are value-based judgements with serious implications for freedom of expression and other human rights online,” the organization said, adding that “as it stands, automation may have a useful role to play in assessing trends or flagging content for human review, but it should, at best, be used to assist trained moderators, and certainly should not replace them.”
TechCrunch has contacted Twitter for comment. Twitter replied with several quotes from a formal response issued to Amnesty International on December 12, Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s legal, policy, and trust and safety global lead.
“Twitter has publicly committed to improving the collective health, openness, and civility of public conversation on our service. Twitter’s health is measured by how we help encourage more healthy debate, conversations, and critical thinking. Conversely, abuse, malicious automation, and manipulation detract from the health of Twitter. We are committed to holding ourselves publicly accountable towards progress in this regard.
”
“Twitter uses a combination of machine learning and human review to adjudicate abuse reports and whether they violate our rules. Context matters when evaluating abusive behavior and determining appropriate enforcement actions. Factors we may take into consideration include, but are not limited to whether: the behavior is targeted at an individual or group of people; the report has been filed by the target of the abuse or a bystander; and the behavior is newsworthy and in the legitimate public interest. Twitter subsequently provides follow-up notifications to the individual that reports the abuse. We also provide recommendations for additional actions that the individual can take to improve his or her Twitter experience, for example using the block or mute feature.
”
“With regard to your forthcoming report, I would note that the concept of “problematic” content for the purposes of classifying content is one that warrants further discussion. It is unclear how you have defined or categorised such content, or if you are suggesting it should be removed from Twitter. We work hard to build globally enforceable rules and have begun consulting the public as part of the process – a new approach within the industry.
”
“As numerous civil society groups have highlighted, it is important for companies to carefully define the scope of their policies for purposes of users being clear what content is and is not permitted. We would welcome further discussion about how you have defined “problematic” as part of this research in accordance with the need to protect free expression and ensure policies are clearly and narrowly drafted.”
