i know we are not getting a carlos win now bc ferrari will obv prioritise charles as the closest to the constructors title but i also think if it comes to a 1-2 we should let them fight it out just to see if jenson button was right

actually the thing about how lewis’ teammates end up as pundits got me thinking…
it’s an interesting thing how the narrative of the teammate relationship/competition between lewis and his ex-teammates (i’m talking mostly about jenson, nico and fernando) is shaped largely (if not entirely) by the latter and therefore is quite significantly distorted; lewis doesn’t talk about them for many different reasons to which he is completely entitled to (he obv isn’t asked, it's not related to anything and he also doesn’t care, is my guess, cause like why would he?) but point still stands that the narrative of what went on, how they faired against each other, their respective strengths and weaknesses is dictated in the media by his teammates…what they say is treated as factual and objective because well, we have never really heard lewis’ side of the story on any of them really (well apart from fernando), despite the fact that most of it remains subjective (obviously not the stats from their seasons, however as we found out these too can be skewed by the media lmao); we have jenson and nico on sky asked about lewis and what he’s thinking, feeling etc. as if they were the gospel on lewis hamilton, jenson’s account of his time as his teammate in his book, also jenson and nico discussing lewis on nico’s yt channel…in terms of fernando, the guy had plenty to say about the 2007 season and how apparently he was the biggest victim of that entire drama, but we do have more from lewis about that season and fernando which balances it out;
it’s a probably really insignificant thing i’ve thought about recently but it kind of struck me just how little input lewis has had over cultivating the perception of his own experiences with his teammates; i also think it also allows a lot of cherry-picking and distortion in the media, as they can choose how to portray their time as lewis’ teammates; i’m specifically referring to how the 2011 or 2016 seasons are discussed (the common denominator is quite obvious);
i think a part of it comes down to how he’s still active in the sport and both jenson and nico are obviously retired plus they work in the media and are (probably) at least partly hired to talk about him (it’s a bit iffy for me but whatever it generates content and discourse right? 😅) ; idk maybe I’m over-thinking it but i would very much be interested in lewis’ autobiography and delving deeper into his perspective during those mclaren years and the 2013-2016 mercedes years even purely for a breath of fresh air (though he doesn't owe us anything ofc);
but then again, is it at all surprising considering that for lewis, who beat all his teammates, they will at most be footnotes in his formula 1 career, however for all of them, lewis will literally be the most important part of their own?

F1 Re-Watch 2013: Round 2 - Malaysia
Happy Multi-21 Day to all who celebrate!!
Fun fact about me, I’ve never watched Malaysia 2013 in full. Until today.
For all the newbies who started following me over the winter break, my abridged F1 story is that I grew up watching F1 with my Dad, then stopped when he passed away in 2007, then started watch it again mid-way through 2013 thanks to one of my high school friends. The first race I watched after my hiatus was Spain, then due to the BBC rights deal where they only had half the races live, the next race I saw after that was Canada. Which Seb won, and I felt bad that people were booing him, so I decided to start supporting him as a result.
I was filled in on the whole Multi-21 drama later, and have since seen the highlight reel in my 2013 season review DVD. But in honour of the race’s tenth anniversary, I’m watching the race in full. So, this may or may not be agonising (live blog under a read more to avoid clogging up your dashes!)
Worth adding, I’m not going to discuss in detail who was right or wrong or whatever, this is simply a record of me watching the Great Red Bull Civil War of March 2013. (with snacks to stress eat obvs)
This liveblog is once again brought to you by F1 TV Access, truly one of the best purchases I’ve made all year.
Anyway I’ve put my big girl trousers on and pressed play and THE OLD F1 INTRO I MISS YOU SO. Proper core memory right there.
Also also Sepang is a banging circuit and I miss her :(
It rained half an hour before the race???? oh jeez
Seb on pole, about to go and commit crimes
AHHHH JENSON!!!!
also remember when Checo drove for McLaren??? wild times.
I do really want to re-watch the 2013 season in full since there’s races from the first half of the season I missed, but that’s for a later day today is dedicated to the drama
Helmet watch: Seb’s blue chrome helmet is super pretty
[Formation Lap]: Everyone on inters bc of the aforementioned rain. Malaysia 2013 really was going for the That Bitch title of 2013.
ayyyy Toto sighting
“This should be a cracking motor race” Oh Brundle, if only you knew what was about to unfold
[Start/Lap 1]: Seb keeps P1, Mark into P2 bc Fernando got a little too frisky
oh rip Fernando’s front wing
Jenson into P5. Yeah that feels good.
Fernando re-took P2, I don’t think he knows half his front wing his hanging off.
[Lap 2]: Oop there she breaks.
Ah, not telling your driver they have a broken front wing. Just Ferrari things.
[Lap 3]: Did not notice Lewis getting up into P3 as a result of Fernando’s DNF.
Meanwhile Rosberg and Jenson are having a little fistfight. Nico won P4.
The supposedly fun part of watching this race for the first time is that I know exactly what happens between Seb and Mark, I just have no idea when. It’s like jaws and a jack in the box combined.
oh man I do not miss the old graphics of having the grid on the bottom of the screen, and waiting for your driver to come back up and hoping they were in the same place
[Lap 5]: ROCKY!!!!!!
Rocky team radio, feels good feels organic. (Don’t make me pick a favourite Seb engineer I love them all equally)
oh Kimi’s gone rallying on the apex of one of the corners.
[Lap 6]: Seb pits for mediums! First onto the dry tyres
oh jeez he just lost three places between corners bc of how slippery the track still is
[Lap 7]: RBR: Mark stay out it’s too wet in sector 1!! Meanwhile 5 or 6 cars come into the pits for slicks
Seb up into P7, which becomes P6 as Lewis pits.
dfaeguighush Lewis drove into the McLaren pit box 🤣
I lowkey love it when drivers do that
“Felipe Massa is now the fastest man on track” 2010s F1 intensifies
Live Nicole Scherzinger reaction to Lewis’ pitstop
[Lap 8]: Hiiiiii Bono!!!
Gotta take all the nice crumbs before the race turns round and stabs me
[Lap 10]: oh wow James Vowels was already head of Merc strategy at this point.
[Lap 11]: ANYWAY, after the pitstop shuffle Mark is in P1 on hards, Seb in P2 on Mediums. I’m anxious.
The race has calmed down now it’s dry but I am not calm as I’m now waiting for the jump scare to happen.
[Lap 12]: Meanwhile Lewis is a second faster a lap than Webber. Drama.
Rosberg sets the fastest lap, while munching on popcorn probably.
“They’re telling Webber he will not be challenged from behind by Sebastian” Oh. Oh no. It’s coming.
It’s only Lap 14
*chuckles* I’m in danger
[Lap 15]: Rosberg continuing to set fastest laps. Mostly unbothered.
Mark is 2.2 secs ahead of Seb who’s 2.1 ahead of Lewis.
I’ve also finished my snacks.
[Lap 16]: And Kimi gets past Perez for P9.
Aaaand a Romain Grosjean fastest lap.
[Lap 17]: Still all quiet on the Red Bull front. I’m still anxious.
I’m pretty sure there’s one maybe two more rounds of pit stops to go
Seb’s now 2.5 seconds behind Mark and 2.7 ahead of Lewis.
[Lap 18]: Livery watch: as much as I’m a black Merc apologist, I miss the silver livery with Petronas green sidepods, it’s soooo pretty
Back in the good old days when team could actually have full liveries and there wasn’t all the exposed carbon nonsense we have now :)
[Lap 19]: “Paul needs to establish himself” Don’t worry Brundle he’ll be your colleague at Sky in a few years
[Lap 20]: And Mark pits for mediums.
Imagine telling an F1 fan in 2023 that Mark only did 11 laps on a set of hards at a race in 2013, there certainly is something to be said for Pirelli I’m just not sure what.
[Lap 22]: And Lewis makes his second stop for more mediums. He drove into the proper pit box.
[Lap 23]: Seb pits for hards! He stays in P2.
Still no signs of violence yet.
Meanwhile Jenson is still in P5!!!
“They [McLaren] can see bright skies on the horizon, and challenge Ferrari in China” yeah lol that didn’t happen.
[Lap 24]: “3 second gap, save your tyres” Seb is two seconds behind Mark dfvdsvsgig
[Lap 25]: “If he’s saving his tyres he’s producing a muck quicker lap time with it” Seb’s barely a second behind Mark at this point I’M VERY ANXIOUS
[Lap 26]: The gap between the RBRs is 6 tenths of a second. Mum please pick me up I’m scared.
Meanwhile Lewis is just over a second behind Seb.
Rocky telling Seb to save his tyres, I don’t think he’s listening.
1.8 seconds covering the top 3 cars. oh boy.
[Lap 27]: Seb still 6 tenths behind Mark. *distressed yelling*
If there’s a big gap between laps it’s because I have my hands over my face in distress.
[Lap 28]: Jenson still in P5!!!
“Mark is too slow, get him out of the way” oop there’s Bastard Seb.
Gap now up to 1.4 seconds.
*half race distance klaxon*
Jenson in P5 while all of this is unfolding, an unbothered King.
[Lap 31]: Lewis makes his third and I’m guessing final stop for Mediums
“Look at Nico Rosberg” Must I?
[Lap 32]: Mark now in for his final stop for hards
JENSON IN P2 STOP THE RACE!!!
“The biscuit barrel is not just full of custard creams” Crofty???? That was meant to be an analogy about teams doing different strategies but I really don’t know man.
[Lap 33]: Seb pits for hards. And he’s in P4 behind Lewis now and barely in front of Rosberg.
JENSON’S LEADING!!! STOP! THE! RACE!
[Lap 34]: Lewis already being told to lift and coast to save fuel. oop.
“Button leads” INJECT IT!!!!!
Malaysia 2013 giveth and Malaysian 2013 about to taketh away.
[Lap 35]: And Mark gets past Jenson into turn 2
Hulkenberg and Kimi racing each other coming out of the pitlane svheghaeugh
And Jenson pits. It was very fun while it lasted.
NOOOOOO unsafe release his tyres aren’t properly on 😭
[Lap 36]: Oh yeah Ross Brawn was Merc TP in 2013, I always forget that. Toto joined Merc as his deputy I think before taking over in 2014.
[Lap 38]: “Sebastian Vettel the meat in the Mercedes sandwich” fic writers start taking notes
Meanwhile Hulkenberg and Kimi are still fist fighting over 8th and 9th
[Lap 39]: Seb up into P2.
[Lap 40]: “Sebastian Vettel has just reduced the advantage Mark Webber has by 8 tenths” There’s jaws music playing my head now fwiw.
Niki sighting ❤️
[Lap 41]: Now Rosberg is closing up to Lewis for a double serving of teammate on teammate violence
[Lap 42]: Oh Lewis pits again, that’s a fourth stop
Man if a driver has a four stop race in 2023 they’ve had a shit show but it seems perfectly normal aeogvaheoh
Meanwhile Seb is still catching Mark
[Lap 43]: And Seb also pits again for Medums, as does Rosberg. Seb stays P2 and Rosberg stays P4.
Livery watch: the glossy soft metallic blue with the purple accents is the superior RBR livery change my mind.
[Lap 44]: And Mark pits for hards.
And he barely came out the pits in front of Seb.
ahhhhhhhhh I think we’re in violence territory.
HELP
[Lap 45]: The gap between them is about half a second dvbaheuhs
(For anyone wanting to watch the race back for whatever reasons, the Civil War starts at around 1hr 26mins)
Presidential alert THE MERCS ARE FIGHTIIIIIIIING
and cut to mildly distressed Merc mechanics
Love that the internal Merc drama was completely overshadowed by Seb and Mark, truly no one was doing it like them
[Lap 46]: AH SHIT SEB AND MARK ARE WHEEL TO WHEEL
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Seb into P1. idk if there’s actually been the Multi 21 call yet. bc comms aren’t calling for Seb’s head as of yet.
Man that replay is yeah... violence
[Lap 47]: oop yellow flag, fits the mood perfectly.
Oh it was for Maldonado.
Live Adrian Newey Reaction.
and Live Ross Brawn reaction to the Merc on Merc violence.
[Lap 48]: Wait this race was on Ted’s birthday??? HBD TED!!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
[Lap 49]: Still no Multi-21 name drop... was this something that came out after the race??? bc I’m sure there’s an actual Multi-21 radio message.
“Pastor Maldonado with an attack of the gravel rash” Thanks Crofty.
[Lap 50]: Massa passes Kimi for 6th
Yeah Seb’s 4 secs ahead of Mark now so surely that’s it????
so where’s the drama???
I can’t have zoned out bc comms would have yelled if Seb got past
[Lap 51]: Oh Rosberg asked to get past Lewis and Ross Brawn straight up said no. oof.
[Lap 52]: Yeah comms are dissecting the Merc drama but not Seb and Mark so I think they didn’t hear the Multi-21 radio call aeughaeuhg
Oh I wish that were me
[Lap 54]: Man Nico and Lewis are still nose to tail it’s like the precursor to 2014-16
Was there something in the water at Malaysia or did the racing gods just wake up and choose violence
Ted sounds so sad about Jenson’s mechanical DNF, a whole mood
[Lap 55]: Seb a whole six and a bit seconds ahead of Webber.
Perez pits????
Oh he had a 30 second gap to P10 nvm
Rosberg is still around half a second behind Lewis. Britney be bitching.
[Lap 56]: Will Lewis have the fuel to finish the race though???
[Finish]: SEB WINS. IT’S OVER.
Lewis P3, Rosberg P4. Cut to some eerily silent RBR and Merc pitwalls.
I don’t think Crofty knows about the Multi-21 message he hasn’t said anything about it.
😳
Did I zone out and miss it?????
Yeah Crofty thinks RBR are mad because Mark and Seb nearly took each other out not bc of the Multi-21 call OH BOY
Oop here’s the cool down room.
Bastard Seb is hot. sorry not sorry.
dbshbuhgru Seb and Adrian just chatting tyres. Still no Mark yet.
I’m watching this with very nervous laughter.
“Multi-21 Seb, Multi-21″ OOP THERE IT IS.
There’s so much tension in the cool down room it has its own gravitational pull.
ah the German anthem my beloved.
The Austrian anthem my belothed.
There is not a single smiling driver on that podium this is so awkward aevheugh
Okay there’s one (1) thrilled Merc mechanic, good for him!
“But was he [Seb] told to hold station?” Yeah they didn’t play the Multi-21 radio during the race.
God this is the most awkward champagne spray I’ve ever seen.
The drivers left the podium aeiihgaeghs
Oh they’re back.
Mark flung away his podium cap into the crowd jeeeeez
Tag yourself I’m Brundle trying to fill the conversation with fluff bc he can pick up the awkward tension a mile off
“It was very close wheel to wheel racing” YOU DON’T SAY SEB
Mark meanwhile looks seething.
“So you were surprised when he came passed you” YOU’RE TELLING ME BRUNDLE DIDN’T KNOW UNTIL THE PODIUM INTERVIEW ABOUT THE MULTI-21 CALL????????
Welcome to F1 the drama never stops.
Live Nicole Scherzinger reaction 2
Lewis saying nice things about Nico. That feels weird post-2016.
Well. That happened. ngl it felt less stressful knowing that they seemingly didn’t play the Multi-21 radio call on the global feed. Honestly the actual race itself was pretty dull until the RBR/Merc infighting.
Still I’m going to got for a lie down now.

al, hi! hope you’re good. i have a few questions, if you want to answer them
- when do the teams actually work on their next years car, if mostly they’re developing their current year car as the season moves on? obv it’s not just in the summer break so i kind of want to know the timeline of how and when they develope their cars (current year and next year) and this could be for any 2 years, not just 21 & 22 in particular
- if there’s like a big regulation/ car model change( idk what to call it sorry) like there’s going to be for the 2022 season, how early are the teams told? or i guess how early do the discussions get finalised because i’m sure teams are also part of it
- not a question but i wanna know your opinion on this, do you think there should be a harsher penalty for an abnormal number of power unit/ engine changes without a proper reason like a crash? (cough mercedes cough) or do you think the grid penalty is fair enough
- do you know what happened to mazepin in cota? like why was he 2 laps behind everyone? i know that he’s not the same level as everyone to put it nicely but i didn’t think he was bad bad lol
- last question, how are you? like just how are you because you put a lot of effort into this blog and answering a lot of people’s questions and yeah you’re just really fun so !!
Hi anon hope you are having a good day, these are some great questions.
1. It really depends on the team and what the regulations look like for the following year, as pretty much every year there’s some small regulation changes. In general they will start working on the next years car (let’s call it car b) as soon as season a starts. Then with most teams work on car B will begin to ramp up after summer break and as the season progresses more and more staff will be moved to working on car b. If that makes sense. Obviously it’s dependent on the regulations, with a big regulation change they would start moving people across earlier. It’s hard to know specifics as teams keep that quite under wraps.
2. So going with the 2022 regulations, which were meant to be brought in for 2021, they were announced to the public in 2019 and the teams would have known they were coming as typically there’s aero changes about every 10 years or so (with the last big one being 2009). Teams likely would have been discussing it with the FIA from late 2017 or earlier. They likely would have been able to kick off the project in 2019.
3. I think it’s fair, they got rid of the weird loophole where you could technically take two fresh engines in one weekend a couple years ago, like that was actually dodgy. I kind of agree with Jenson where the penalty should get harsher the more of those parts you accumulate, so the first time you take a new component it’s 5 places, the next it’s 10, etc for each component.
4. So from what I understand his headrest came loose on the first lap as the mechanics hadn’t secured it properly, so he had to drive the first lap really slowly to stop it flying off and he couldn’t see in his mirrors until he pitted at the end of that lap and they fixed it. Then he was complaining that his feet were getting really hot in the cockpit, and then he had an issue with his helmet. He also had an extra stop, he did a 3 stopper whilst most of the others did 2.
4. Honestly I’m kinda exhausted I was out late last night and I’ve just got back from uni (it’s about 8pm), so it’s probably a very early night for me. Thank you anon, I hope you have a good day/night!

F1 Re-Watch 2013: Round 19 - Brazil
"Back in my day Brazil was always the last race of the season" "Okay Grandma let's get you back to bed"
Well, it's taken me almost a year to complete The Great F1 2013 Re-Watch, but here we are at Race 19/19 (I ended up watching the race over two days before and after Bahrain 2024 bc I got too tired when I started it and didn't want to finish during a race weekend).
While I did watch this race live at the time the only bits I can accurately recall were Seb winning (obvs), Jenson and McLaren getting their best results of the year, and Mark Webber's last race and him taking his helmet off on his cool down lap (and him almost faceplanting on the podium 😅) and of course it being the last race with the V8 engines.
I'm hoping it's going to be a fun watch bc Interlagos is such a great track, so let's jump in!
Saying one last time for prosperity that I miss the old F1 intro
60% risk of rain???? I don't remember that
I do remember it being very grey though
d'aw all the crew on Mark Webber's car wearing Aussie hats
Starting grid overview: Seb pole (!!!!!), Rosberg P2, Alonso P3, Webber P4, Lewis P5, Jev P8, Jenson P14 (my guy how did you get from there to 4th????), and Perez in P19 (again how did you get from there to 5th/6th????)
I mean, I think McLaren finished in 4th and 5th this race. I'd look it up but I'll find out in an hour and a bit.
[Formation Lap]: I think Seb has a water colour style helmet for this race, it looks very pretty
Mediums and Hards are the tyre compounds for this race.
One of my favourite F1 things will always be the stampede of mechanics and engineers running back to the pits.
Ross Brawn and Shov sighting
and speaking of Merc, there's still P2 in the WCC to decide between them and Ferrari.
[Start/Lap 1]: woah Nico leads off the line!!
and Lewis into P3!!! Fernando's behind him
I almost don't want to type in case I miss anything
[Lap 2]: AND SEB RE-TAKES THE LEAD!!!
and almost immediately after Fernando takes P3 from Lewis
And Webber goes up to P4
So! Much! Racing!!!!! Interlagos the circuit that you are
[Lap 3]: JENSON'S INTO P10!!!!!
Seb's out of Nico's DRS range, normal service has been resumed
oop, Grosjean's engine went poof
[Lap 4]: And Alonso takes P2, apparently both Mercs are carrying more wing than the cars around them, which is more ideal for wet running than dry
And quali for this race was in the wet, which explains the pace difference
Anyway the lap 1 replays, Interlagos you will always be famous
[Lap 6]: Jenson is up to P9!!!!
Stay tuned for more Jenson Watch updates
[Lap 7]: Webber goes round the outside of Rosberg through the Senna esses to take P3. Saucy.
NOT GROSJEAN RUNNING DOWN THE LIVE TRACK TO GET BACK TO THE PITS. BE SERIOUS.
good Lord that was terrifying.
[Lap 8]: Anyway, Lewis has a pretty green and yellow helmet
Happy to report Grosjean is back in the pit lane and unscathed
replay of Jenson overtaking Ricciardo for P8 👌
[Lap 9]: oof, Merc potentially having to switch to a three stop
Immediately followed by Nico saying he's struggling with his rear tyres with a cut to the Merc pitwall.
The Mercs are running in 4th (Nico) and 5th (Lewis)
[Lap 11]: And Lewis takes P4 from Nico while Mark chases down Fernando (the fics are practically writing themselves)
[Lap 12]: on McLaren Watch, Perez is up to P11
[Lap 13]: And Webber takes P2 on the main straight!
man this race has been great so far.
And Perez takes P10!
idk what is in those McLarens bc they're on different compounds but they have really solid race pace
[Lap 14]: Jenson up to P7!!!
I'm starting to see how the McLaren's got so high up the grid, they're genuinely quick
[Lap 15]: by contrast, Rosberg has dropped to P6 after being overtaken by Massa
"Prospect of showers" Mr Williams engineer despite your lovely Irish accent you just made my blood pressure go up
Merc saying light rain is 10 minutes away, I mean.... it's Brazil we might as well
[Lap 16]: Cut to Seb having quite a big lock up
...of course Ferrari are saying something different about the weather #JustFerrariThings
[Lap 17]: So top 5 overview: Seb, Webber, Fernando, Lewis and Massa
[Lap 18]: Sutil overtakes Bottas at the pit stop, Team Silverstone be Team Silverstoneing
replat of Seb's lock up and his front right tyre is not looking pretty
[Lap 20]: Jenson is just over three seconds behind Rosberg 🙏
"There's a few spots of rain in the air" Rocky pls
[Lap 21]: Jenson's pitted for mediums, which considering he started on the hards is early. He's came out in P10
[Lap 22]: Make that P9 he just got past a couple of cars, that's my guy!!!!!!
oh god there's spots on the cameras
nvm UP INTO P8!!!!!
[Lap 23]: and after Rosberg pitted Jenson is now into P7
this race really was for me
[Lap 24]: Ouch Webber with a 5 second pit stop
and as such he comes out behind Alonso
[Lap 25]: and in comes Seb for his first stop
thankfully it's a clean stop and he comes about out in P1
and Lewis has apparently already made his first stop
[Lap 26]: And Webber re-takes P2 on the inside of turn 1!
Now the first stops are out the way, the top 10 is Seb, Fernando, Webber, Massa, Lewis, Jenson, Rosberg, Perez, Hulkenberg and Ricciardo
aw man, Mark v Fernando and Massa v Lewis. If I could kiss Interlagos I would.
(Coming back in a week later to finally finish this re-watch.)
[Lap 27]: That overhead shot of Webber and Fernando driving through the Sennas esses is just gorgeous, Interlagos the circuit that you are
[Lap 28]: and same with Lewis and Massa.
[Lap 29]: Lewis is still really stuck behind the Ferrari though
[Lap 30]: and both cars apparently has KERS issues, the pinnacle of motorsport folks
aaaaand Massa is under investigation for crossing the white line at pit entry
[Lap 32]: and he's got a drive through penalty, the replay of it was a solid slam dunk
[Lap 34]: can the spits of rain please stop I don't need it
[Lap 35]: Massa finally serves his penalty and comes out in P8
so JENSON IS UP TO 5TH!!!!!!
Seb is still leading by about 12 seconds because #JustSebThings
[Lap 36]: and let's just do a top 10 overview: Seb, Webber, Fernando, Lewis, Jenson, Rosberg, Perez, Massa, Hulkenberg & Ricciardo
[Lap 37]: not Jenson's engineer talking to him in the braking zone dflvfdjv
[Lap 39]: and I didn't even notice until Crofty mentioned it that we're past half distance
also also Perez is closing in on Rosberg, not a sentence I though I'd by typing today
[Lap 41]: And Webber is one warning away from joining the 'drive through pen for crossing the pit entry line' club
Perez is catching up to Rosberg who's catching up to Jenson
[Lap 42]: immediate cute from people in the pit lane weather watching to a weather radar saying no rain in the next 30 minutes
[Lap 43]: off that's some serious low lying clouds.
apparently it's spitting but bc the track temp is still quite high the water is just evaporating when it hits the track
[Lap 44]: and Jenson makes his second stop for I think a set of mediums
[Lap 45]: Rosberg and Perez both make their second stops, they're both on the hards and come out behind Jenson
[Lap 47]: VALTTERI NO
the camera just cut to his car spinning and his rear tyre flew off
LEWIS HAS A PUNCTURE WHAT
and BOTH RBRS ARE IN AND THE PIT CREW WASN'T READY??????
Lap 47 WHY DID YOU DO THAT???????
[Lap 48]: Lewis managed to make it back to the pits and gets a new set of hard tyres
ohhhhh no, Valtteri was trying to unlap himself, and I don't think Lewis realised he was there, and their rear tyres banged together and came apart
Flabbergasted Susie Wolff is me and I am her
[Lap 49]: and Lewis also has floor damage
[Lap 50]: And a Fernando fastest lap just to add to the chaos
as a result of the RBR pit stop fuckery, Fernando has managed to catch up right to the back of Webber
[Lap 51]: ouch, drive through pen for Lewis for causing a collision
[Lap 53]: in Jenson watch he's up to P4 as a result of the various nonsense
and Lewis serves his drive through pen
[Lap 54]: Seb sighting!!!!
oh and Van der Garde gets a drive through pen for ignoring blue flags. I'm going to call that penalty bingo.
oh Interlagos, just doing Interlagos things
[Lap 55]: cut to 'Rain Expected' on one of the teams' weather radar just for extra spice
No race will ever be as chaotic as the Brazilian GP
[Lap 57]: Lewis watch, he's in P10 chasing down Ricciardo
[Lap 58]: and he takes P9!!!
and cut to Jenson in P4 🥹
that's my boy!!!!!!!
Brundle and Crofty shutting up to listen to the engine sounds is the best thing they've done all race
[Lap 59]: ah someone on the Williams pit wall doing the classic 'stick an arm out to see if it's raining' tactic
[Lap 61]: and there's a slow moving Caterham
ouch, broken suspension
[Lap 64]: Perez is back to closing down Rosberg
one of the Toro Rossos spinning round Maldonado, somehow nether car was damaged
okay after the replay I take it back, Maldonado tried to pincer Jev round the outside of turn 1, a bit silly
[Lap 67]: 5 laps remaining!!
"Rain is picking up between now and the start of the race" Thanks Rocky I really needed to hear that
[Lap 70]: If I could describe the weather I would say that it's Schrodinger's rain
[Lap 71]: LAST LAP!!!
man that low cloud looks almost biblical
and aw that on board cam of Mark on his last lap in an F1 car
[Finish]: AND SEB WINS IN BRAZIL!!!!!!!!
P2: Webber, P3: Alonso, P4 Jenson, P5: Rosberg, P6: Perez, P7: Massa, P8: Hulkenberg, P9: Lewis and P10: Ricciardo.
Well that was a really nice race to end on (the mild heart failure Lap 47 gave me not withstanding), and while it took me 50 million years I'm so happy I decided to re-watch the 2013 season, the first half was really fun with the different amount of race winners, and for Seb reasons the second half was iconic as hell.
My overall season highlights had to be Seb winning the WDC in India, Lewis' first win for Mercedes in Hungary, the battle for the lead in Japan was fun to watch unfold, and getting to re-live Canada again.
I have so many feelings about Seb's last title winning season that I'll never quite be able to put into words, but he's my goat always and forever.
(and yes I can have multiple goats because I say so)

F1 Re-Watch 2013: Round 3 - China
I am FINALLY picking up my 2013 watch through again. This was always going to be a chilled out thing but just have no had the headspace lately bc of various life things constantly kicking me in the teeth 😭
Anyhow, despite still being early on in the season we’re already nearing the end of races I haven’t seen at all, but I obvs still know the main bits of what happened (Fernando winning, Seb and Lewis battling for P3). So, let’s finally jump in!
gonna say it again, the old F1 intro my beloved
also also this was the first race post Multi-21 (I did start this re-watch out of order, if you’re wondering why Malaysia is the first post in my tag) so I assume we’re going to get some spicy comms (or an attempt, since it’s Crofty and Brundle)
also also also, I legit miss Shanghai on the calendar. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but we had some really good races there, it’s a really good track.
aaaaand starting grid: Lewis on pole, Fernando in 3rd, Dan in 7th in a Toro Rosso, Jense in 8th Seb down in 9th... Jev in 15th 😭
(god it feels SO WIERD seeing Rosberg on the grid as a driver, does not compute)
lol Webber starting from the pits bc he ran out of fuel in quali.
oh, this was Lewis’ first pole for Merc 🥹🖤
[Formation Lap]: Helmet watch: I loved how Lewis’ yellow helmet with the red and green accents had a blue, green and amber multichrome visor to match. (Yes these are the important things that we discuss here at racingliners.tumblr.com)
Just F1 culture things: the mad dash of mechanics and engineers running from the grid to the garages.
“Whatever way round it was it was still a [Red Bull] 1-2 in Malaysia” oh we are getting some spicy comms after all
Helmet watch 2: Seb’s red helmet is v pretty
[Start/Lap 1]: Lewis having a v zoomy start, we love to see it
While Raikkonen got dropped by both Ferraris
Meanwhile cars going three wide in the midfield bc insanity
oh no Force India on Force India violence at the last corner
[Lap 2]: Webber makes his first stop, inch resting
Man, the ever constant of Lewis and Fernando racing against each other
[Lap 3]: Lewis 8 tenths up on Fernando we love to see it
Livery watch: of the many iterations Team Enstone have raced under, the black and gold Lotus livery is very much one of my favourites (Pink Alpine will always be superior though)
[Lap 4]: damn Fernando really caught up with DRS
Seb finally making moves and passes Dan for 8th
[Lap 5]: ...not both Ferrari’s getting past Lewis on the main straight. what the DRS
meanwhile Seb got past Jenson, and passes Rosberg at the hairpin for 7th
[Lap 6]: and one of the Force India’s has a broken rear wing, and Mercedes just did a double stack
This race went from 0 to 100 very quickly
oh shit the Force India’s brakes are now on fire
Team Silverstone’s no good very bad Chinese GP
oh no it was Gutierrez who just ploughed into the back of him. whoops.
[Lap 7]: Alonso pits
I am barely paying attention to tyre compounds with all the demolition derby shit going on
aaaaand Lewis back to being the fastest on track. noice.
cut to Jev v Bottas for P11. ngl it’s very wild watching these races back knowing how some of these guys careers have unfolded a decade later.
(Jev’s a double FE World Champion, so fuck you Marko)
ahem back to racing
also hi Pastor Maldonado
[Lap 8]: Oh my god Hulkenberg is leading the race after all the pit stops and carnage what the fuck
but more importantly Seb P2 and Jenson P3 🥰
in reality Alonso is the net race leader bc everyone in front of him is yet to stop I’m just living in delusion
[Lap 9]: whoops some drivers allegedly used DRS in a yellow flag zone, that was silly
[Lap 10]: ngl, I really miss it when we had a legit mix of possible strategies (in this case a 2-stop vs a 3-stop). Pirelli make better tyres challenge
[Lap 11]: What is a polar bear (Di Resta) doing in Arlington, Texas?! (5th place).
Good for you though Team Silverstone I love you Team Silverstone
Livery watch: the glossy metallic blue with purple accents rbr I MISS YOU
[Lap 12]: of rip not Fernando being 1.6 seconds faster than Seb on his new tyres 😭
anyway now I’m finally paying attention, the soft and mediums were the tyre compounds for this race
[Lap 13]: Seb and Rocky team radio interactions my beloved 🥰
[Lap 14]: How the fuck is Hulkenberg still leading????
Meanwhile Alonso is just cutting through the field like butter fvhaeudhu. He’s up to 4th
[Lap 15]: lol rbr pitted Seb to get him out of Hulkenberg’s dirty air and he pits anyway
but Seb jumps him in the pits!
the devil works hard but RBR mechanics work harder
NOOOOO WEBBER CRASHED INTO JEV
back to back races of Red Bull on Red Bull violence. oof
“How does the car feel?” “Not too bad” HIS FRONT WING HAS BEEN SHREDDED
[Lap 16]: oh not Raikkonen going into the back of Perez
both incidents happened at turn 6, what was in the water in the lake in the paddock?
aaaand cut to a slow moving Webber (and a depressed looking Adrian Newey)
[Lap 17]: Oh shit there goes Webber’s right rear tyre, just... rolling across the track
[Lap 18]: Meanwhile, Jenson is in first so I think we should just stop the race and call it a day
There has been SO MUCH GOING ON
[Lap 19]: “Should they remove the car? It’s not on the racing line” My lord jesus christ IT’S ON THE TRACK CROFTY
Obviously you can’t see me as I’m typing this but I’m looking into the camera like I’m on the office
They haven’t moved the tyre either it’s just sat on the grass run off, that is NOT SAFE MY DUDES
[Lap 20]: Meanwhile Massa and Rosberg pit again
And Seb up into P5 🥰
“Button leads the race” STOP THE COUNT
“Alonso catching Button but he cannot pass him... Jenson Button doing a fine fine job” I love this song
[Lap 21]: ...nvm Fernando took the lead going into turn 1
It was wonderful while it lasted, considering the 2013 McLaren car was painfully average
Rosberg pits again???? I wondered why they cut to a bemused looking Merc pit wall
[Lap 22]: The synchronised Merc and Lotus pit stops *chef’s kiss*
Lewis comes out in 9th but considering the massive pace difference between old and new tyres he should be back on the top 5 pretty soon
[Lap 23]: oop Rosberg retires with a mechanical fault
mild shock, I just about understood when Jenson said over the radio. He didn’t sound like static for once
and Lewis overtakes Dan for 7th
[Lap 24]: Jenson pits for his first stop, and Fernando for his second
...Jenson and Grosjean under investigation for using DRS in a yellow flag zone 🤦‍♀️
Braincells boys, braincells
[Lap 25]: anyway hiiiii Bono
Just Lewis things: collecting fastest laps like pokemon
[Lap 26]: And Fernando moved into P2.
...and now he chases down Seb
man this race is just peak 2010′s F1. Fernando racing Seb and Lewis, Lewis chasing down Jenson (and Jenson’s car not being completely shit for once). Raikkonen just vibing and somehow being faster after he got a broken front wing and nosecone
also while I haven’t had my obligatory “TEEEEED” reaction, he is in the pitlane living his best life.
[Lap 29]: And Lewis passes Jenson on the main straight.
and we have passed half distance!
[Lap 30]: And Fernando takes the lead
“It’s Alonso, Hamilton and Raikkonen for the top 3″ damn Brundle’s third eye was wide open (spoiler alert, that’s our podium just with Lewis and Kimi swapped round)
[Lap 31]: that is a very tragic sight of Raikkonen passing Jenson with his very broken nosecone
[Lap 32]: Seb makes his second stop, but he still has to run the softs
and he’s already moving back up into 6th place
[Lap 33]: ...and now into P5
He is zooming
[Lap 34]: Oh the old tyre strategy graphic!! I did not know I missed it until I saw it, it’s way easier to follow all the different strategies if they just have all the tyres drivers have ran thus far on screen 😅
[Lap 35]: Not Seb being 2 and a bit seconds faster than Jenson 😭 (a combo of 2 stop vs 3 stop, and it being the 2013 RBR vs the 2013 McLaren)
[Lap 36]: and unsurprisingly Seb passes Jenson for 3rd
The current race order being Fernando, Lewis, Seb, Jenson and Raikkonen
[Lap 38]: And Lewis makes what I think is his final stop
He comes out in 6th, behind Ricciardo
[Lap 39]: So Fernando has to stop again, but he has a decent gap over everyone else. Seb and Jenson who also have to stop again less so
“What’s the situation in the race?!” Ted is me and I am Ted. mainly because I started this after 10pm my time
Lewis once again collecting the fastest lap. Purple really is his colour.
‘Use of DRS in yellow flag zones for cars 1, 2, 7, 17, 19 and 23 will be investigated after the race’ I had to pause bc I couldn’t stop laughing.
That’s an awful lot of paperwork, the stewards are booked and busy bc Jenson and Jev were already on that list
so about a third of the grid potentially doing something very unavoidable. F1 is a Serious Sport™️
[Lap 42]: Anyway, Fernando makes his final stop, and only comes out in 2nd behind Seb.
[Lap 43]: And he once again passes Seb going into turn 1, so just second and third to sort out.
[Lap 44]: Raikkonen passes Jenson for 3rd at the last corner
[Lap 45]: ...and Lewis passes Jenson for 4th a few corners after
seeing your fave driver go from 3rd to 5th vs seeing your other favourite driver get into 4th
[Lap 46]: 10 laps to go
[Lap 47]: “No need to push” “I’m not pushing” Fastest Lap: Fernando Alonso. rguheuraghu
Fernando Alonso certified menace to society
[Lap 48]: Seb (2nd) and Jenson (5th) still haven’t stopped yet, so they’re either leaving it as late as possible, or going to try extending to a two stop.
[Lap 49]: ah nvm Jenson’s race engineer said they were doing one more lap before stopping 😅
also YIKES the soft tyres sucked that much this race if they only want to do 7 laps on it
[Lap 50]: and Jenson finally pits for the soft tyre, he comes out in 7th place
[Lap 51]: Jenson passes Massa for 6th
and he’s setting purple sectors 🥰
[Lap 52]: Seb makes his third stop for softs, he comes out in 4th
*5 Laps remaining klaxon*
and apparently Jenson’s tyres are already dying 😭
Pirelli you can and will meet my fists
[Lap 53]: meanwhile Lewis is close to Raikkonen, but not close enough to try a pass
[Lap 54]: ✨Seb fastest lap✨
and Di Resta pits which promotes Jenson to 5th
oh jeez the amount of marbles off the racing line, they could legit make a whole set of tyres, the track is literally black where they’ve all gathered
[Lap 55]: Seb closing in on Lewis at a huge rate of knots
last lap spice you say? 👀
[Lap 56]: the gap has gone from 5.2 seconds to 2.0 seconds in about two laps. whew.
A Lewis and Seb battle is the superior battle, you cannot change my mind
although Lewis is caught up in a train of traffic, which is allowing Seb to catch up even more.
[Finish]: Fernando wins, can we cut to Lewis and Seb please
MASSIVE LOCK UP FROM LEWIS
oh jeeeeeez it was a drag race to the line and I think Lewis got him by a front wing end plate. WHEW.
Final Top 5: Alonso, Raikkonen, Lewis, Seb, Jenson
Oh jeez that race was actually really decent! Normally I hate strategy races BUT in this case it made things genuinely interesting bc there was a good split of drivers using the 2-stop or 3-stop, and most importantly it gave us some decent battles and made the results somewhat unpredictable! And the last lap chase of Lewis v Seb was SO GOOD. It literally wasn’t over until the last lap, and it being between Lewis and Seb was just even better, and podium or not Seb had such a great comeback drive from what I think was a brake issue in quali the day before. And that’s before you get into all the stuff going on at the start... WHEW.
Easy 8 out of 10 race, next one is Bahrain!
