I was listening to this song today and started to think it's so BoJere coded. 🥲
When the darkness gets too dense
I’ll set myself on fire
So you’ll see me when I come to you
Even if there was half a world between us
The miles are an illusion
When only one thing is certain
There’s an unbroken thread between us
That worldly blades cannot cut
There’s an invisible power between us
So strong, it almost frightens me
I’m beside you even when I’m not
You’re safe, don’t have to stay awake alone
There’s an unbroken thread between us
That worldly blades cannot cut

Hi ! Do you have any finnish music recommandations ? Feel free with the genre I'm quite open. I love discovering music in other languages but I'm always worried the lyrics will be saying something really terrible 😆
Hi! I'm all for spreading Finnish music, so of course! Just a fair warning, this ended up quite lengthy... Sorry about that. 😅 Here's a tl;dr version just in case you don't feel like reading about all the genre gushing and lyrical details, I couldn't help myself haha:
Pop, schlager and rock songs:
Ram Pam Pam by BESS
Tinakenkätyttö, Kaunis rietas onnellinen, and Supernaiset by Kaija Koo
Lähtisitkö by Pave Maijanen
Hei Rakas by BEHM
Soutaa Huopaa and Saatilla by Elokuu
Henkilökohtaisesti by PMMP, as well as their albums Leskiäidin Tyttäret and Kovemmat Kädet (content warning on these, if you end up reading translations of the lyrics, some of the songs on these albums deal with some heavy topics!)
Pauhaava sydän, Hetkeksi en sulle rupia, and Suudellaan by Lauri Tähkä & Elonkerjuu
Marmoritaivas by Johanna Kurkela
Suru on kunniavieras by Jenni Vartiainen (though her entire discography is phenomenal)
Che Guevara by Happoradio
Kaikki mitä mä annoin by Uniklubi
Samantekevää by Tiktak
Ikuinen Virta by Indica
Joutsenlaulu by Yö
Metal (or heavier) songs:
Hengitä by Turmion Kätilöt (content warning again, some of this band's songs have quite spicy lyrics, though I'd say a good portion of those songs are satirical. This song in particular doesn't have any questionable lyrics haha)
Laiva by Merta
Syvyydet by Vorna
Armo by Apulanta
Hope you find something you like among these!
Now for the longer answer lol:
For modern pop songs, there's no better place to start than Ram Pam Pam by BESS. The song has become a bit of a Eurovision darling despite the fact that it lost in the Finnish Eurovision national final, the UMK, and thus didn't compete in 2022. The song bears influence of Finnish pop and schlager (in Finnish this genre is called "iskelmä") artist Kaija Koo's songs, which tend to have empowering messages. If you want to listen to Kaija Koo's music, I'd recommend the songs Tinakenkätyttö, Kaunis rietas onnellinen, and Supernaiset.
A song that I have a personal soft spot for is the 80's summer banger Lähtisitkö by Pave Maijanen. It's a corny love song, but that's exactly why it's so great. 🥰 While we're on the topic love songs, there's also Hei Rakas by BEHM, which has very sweet and genuine lyrics and absolutely gorgeous instrumentals. (As a side note, this song is somewhat connected to Eurovision as well, as BEHM performed the song live during UMK 2020 as an interval act).
If you're interested in pop songs that use traditional Finnish instruments in them, I'd recommend both Soutaa Huopaa and Saatilla by the band Elokuu. These songs mix traditional Finnish instruments and the traditional Finnish dance music genre humppa (similar to waltz and foxtrot music) with Finnish schlager music and rap. In that sense, these songs are somewhat similar to Käärijä's Cha Cha Cha, as they mix schlager with rap, though the vibes are completely different. 😂 There's also Henkilökohtaisesti by PMMP, which uses a mix of traditional Finnish instruments and modern genres. As a matter of fact, I'd recommend the entirety of PMMP's album Leskiäidin Tyttäret, where Henkilökohtaisesti is included, as well as another album called Kovemmat Kädet. Though as a fair warning, many of the songs on these albums touch on very heavy topics. There's also the band Lauri Tähkä & Elonkerjuu, which blended traditional folk elements with schlager and rock. Their lyrics also utilise the Finnish Pohjanmaa dialect, adding onto the folk -feel of their music. Most of their songs are love songs, my personal favourites from their catalogue are Pauhaava sydän, Hetkeksi en sulle rupia, and Suudellaan. There's also the song Marmoritaivas by Johanna Kurkela, another very beautiful love song with some more traditional sounding elements to it. Fun fact about Johanna, she's also an ex UMK contestant who didn't make it to Eurovision! Moreover, Suru on kunniavieras by Jenni Vartiainen doesn't necessarily use any traditional instruments, but resembles old Finnish music in terms of specific vocals and some of the lyrics.
Of course I also have to bring up Finnish metal and rock music. Some of my personal favourite metal songs in Finnish are Hengitä by Turmion Kätilöt (who tend to have quite... interesting lyrics), Laiva by Merta and Syvyydet by Vorna. Hengitä and Laiva are both songs about mental illness. For less heavy music, there are the likes of Happoradio and Uniklubi, for specifically all-female acts there are Tiktak and Indica. As a starting point for these bands, I'd recommend Che Guevara by Happoradio, Kaikki mitä mä annoin by Uniklubi, Samantekevää by Tiktak (fun fact this was my absolute favourite song as a kid) and Ikuinen Virta by Indica. I feel slightly obligated to also recommend the songs Joutsenlaulu by Yö and Armo by Apulanta, as both are arguably culturally significant songs. Joutsenlaulu is a reflection on mortality and a song about loss (playing into the typical Finnish artist's obsession with death as an artistic motif), while Armo could be interpreted as a song about the Winter War (a war between the Soviet Union and Finland that took place during the World War II and has shaped Finnish culture immensely). There's also a very beautiful choir cover of the song Armo, called Konflikti (Armo). This version was featured in a movie about Apulanta. Sadly, Joutsenlaulu is not available on Spotify anymore (or any other streaming services for that matter). Funnily enough, Joutsenlaulu was originally meant to be a candidate for the Eurovision song contest of 1984, but the idea was scrapped after its composer came to the realisation that he couldn't possibly keep the length of the song under three minutes. Anyway, here's a link to the song on YouTube, just in case the links above don't work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URDrfH2Rbbg&ab_channel=FinSongs

ngl, I love both Behm and Erika Vikman and Jenni Vartiainen was really good, but...
Arppa was the best performer in the linnan juhlat after party. Incredible energy especially during Juhani when the band members started going solo.

Thank you @wednesdayday , @kaarijascha, @kaarija-is-best and @eurobison for tagging me in that 5 songs thing 💚 (I made it 6 though)
I haven't heard of Noen å hate, Besame mucho , The Narcissist  and A Hunger in Your Haunt before, gonna check them out later 👌🏻
***
...the urge of picking only Käärijä and Joker Out songs is so strong, but I'll resist because I think you all know that I've been listening to them like crazy anyway. All of their songs 😂 So, I'll share these instead, in no particular order:
youtube
youtube
youtube
youtube
***
... and the song below is the song I couldn't help but sing after seeing one particular super 🔥🔥 picture of Jere yesterday. Yeah it was this one (x)
Tumblr media
The translation can be found on (x) and it's like:
"Say 'puff' and blow out 'cause I'm on fire
Melting and burning up like a candle
This soul is madly in love with you
And my body is getting hot for you
God damn, baby! Your elegance, your body... so magnificent
You can see that God took his sweet time creating you
You are burning down the universe with your body and aura"
(... I cannot believe Jere got all of us HORNY ON MAIN. This is soooo not me, but no one can blame us. He is to blame.)
***
And this one is the special song that got me into Finnish songs in, hmm, 2011 I guess. Thanks to that video:
youtube
All of her songs are amazing by the way. (The same goes for dear Ozbi and Can Bonomo as well)
I tag @eames-with-a-rose  because her song recommendations are important to me, and I tag everyone, and I mean everyone, who sees this and willing to share some of the songs they've been listening to lately. Please feel free to share more than 5 songs and talk about why you love them etc. I love discovering new songs, so you would be doing me a favour really 💜💙 Thank you already. No pressure though.

hey, do you have any recommendations of queer/queer-adjacent finnish music? if not, it's okay, no pressure
Hey anon, sorry for the late reply! 💕
Let me preface this by saying that since the Finnish language doesn’t have gendered personal pronouns, a lot of songs are open for interpretation when it comes to gender and sexuality! So, I opted to go for some songs that are very clearly queer coded, and also to give you a few examples Finnish artists who are part of the LGBTQ community!
Again, for any finns who may be reading this, please feel free to add onto the list!
Here’s the tldr version with links to the songs:
Ihmisten edessä by Jenni Vartiainen (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
(Mentioned in relation: Jenny by Studio Killers) (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
Hoida Mut by Benjamin (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
Kuuma jäbä by Isaac Sene (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
Cicciolina (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) and Syntisten pöytä (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) by Erika Vikman
Tähdet, taivas ja sä by Saara Aalto (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
(Mentioned in relation: Monsters by Saara Aalto) (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link)
2080-luvulla, (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) Hei kevät (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) and Pornoo (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) by SANNI (though her discography in general is pretty great. Especially her album Sotke Mut has many good songs imo.)
Sydämeni osuman sai (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) by Siiri Nordin (out of her albums I personally enjoy Lyö tahtia the most.)
(Sydämeni osuman sai is a cover of the song Something’s Gotten Hold of my Heart written by Roger Greenway and Roger Cook.)
Rakkautta ja Piikkilankaa (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) by Sini Yasemin
(Cover of the song Rakkauta ja Piikkilankaa by Uniklubi) (YouTube Link) (Spotify Link) (Fun fact I absolutely adored this song as a kid lol)
First off, I think it’s essential to start with the Finnish lesbian anthem: ”Ihmisten edessä” by Jenni Vartiainen. This song is really important for many people my age, as it was pretty much ”Baby’s first exposure to non-het relationships” to a lot of people. The song is an absolute banger, and, fun fact, was written and composed by Teemu Brunila, who is believed to be the voice behind Studio Killers’ singer Cherry. Thus it’s likely that he may even have been involved in the creation of Jenny, which is another lesbian anthem.
Then we have our UMK contestants who didn’t quite make it to the Eurovision like Benjamin who competed with the song ”Hoida Mut” in 2023, Isaac Sene who competed with the song ”Kuuma jäbä” in 2022, and Erika Vikman, who competed in 2020 with the song ”Cicciolina”. Out of these three, Hoida Mut and Kuuma jäbä make it obvious that they’re about gay relationships, while Cicciolina is open for interpretation (which may be because Erika is bisexual). Of course, there is also Saara Aalto, who competed in the Eurovision song contest in 2018 with ”Monsters”.  Out of her songs that are in Finnish, I personally like the song ”Tähdet, taivas ja sä” the most.
One of my favourite Finnish LGBTQ artists is SANNI. Some of my favourite songs by her are 2080-luvulla, Hei kevät, and Pornoo.
The singer Siiri Nordin is also LGBTQ. Her cover of the song "Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart”, called ”Sydämeni osuman sai” is very lovely.
I can’t say I’m super familiar with the career of Sini Yasemin, however she is an emerging LGBTQ artist whose work is also worth looking into! Her cover of Rakkautta ja piikkilankaa (originally performed by the rock group Uniklubi) is probably a safe place to start if you want to get a grasp of her sound.
Again, for anyone who can come up with more songs/artists, feel free to add onto this!

Congrats on 10 000 posts! 🎊 To celebrate, I have a question for you (sorry if you've already answered this): I was just wondering earlier today (while reading the Viisukuppila bulletin board out of boredom), based on the "clues" we have been given of next year's UMK contestants so far, do you happen to have any theories, hopes or sophisticated guesses on who might be participating? 👀
Thank you darling! ❤ My weak spot is that I don't really follow Finnish music scene and only have a vague idea which artists are popular 😅 But let's see what others have to say!
1. A talented artist’s first 90s-style dance song
The Finnish clue specifies that this is the debute song of the artist in question. Reminds me of Keira last year (success in The Voice of Finland and now releasing their first single). Timmy Tattari reached 3rd place in this year's TVoF and has a record deal with Capitol Finland (same as Keira) but hasn't released anything yet. He follows UMK, Cornelia Jakobs and Monika Linkyté on IG but that doesn't prove anything other that he watches Esc. Another candidate is Olga Heikkala, a singer and an actress who announced this month that she's leaving the soap opera Salatut Elämät after five years. No apparent UMK connections or label afaik, but is friends with KUUMAA boys and has performed on their music video.
2. A power song by a true vocal talent
Finnish fans are speculating about Diandra every year, but I have my doubts. Someone suggested Neea River, who rose to Tiktok fame covering Celine Dion. She is Warner’s artist, co-wrote a song for Blanka (Poland 2023), is friends with Benjamin and IG mutuals with Käärijä & Jesse.
3. Perhaps the best song of an indie favourite’s career
Stoned Statues just released their second album. Music magazine Soundi called them “the most promising young rock band of the moment” and Helsingin Sanomat “the new hope of Finnish heavy metal”. They had three Emma nominations and were awarded “upcoming artist of the year” in Indie Awards 2023. I also saw suggestions for Maustetytöt, but are they still considered indie?
4. Two big name performers doing a surprising duo with a serious refrain
The Finnish version of this hint suggests the refrain being “hard”, meaning catchy. Now we only have to find out which artists are considered “big names” 🙃 Abreu & Pihlaja did release a single together in August, although it must be mentioned that Abreu has previously stated that she’s not interested in Eurovision (although people can change their mind like Robin did). Fans are suggesting Sexmane, Isac Elliot and Costee to be the other half of the duo. I just hope we’re not getting the senior department who have no actual chance or desire to compete in Eurovision, like Danny/Tommi Läntinen 💀 Perhaps this is another Pandora & Teflon Brothers situation.
5. A thunderous rock anthem by a world-touring band
I saw rumours considering The 69 Eyes, but-- god please no. Their heydays are over. My own suggestion was Lost Society who could be the Blind Channel of this year. Shiraz Lane is also a possibility and they are from Ranka Kustannus as BC and Cyan Kicks were.
6. A seriously intense song from one of the most listened-to artists in Finland
The streets (X/Twitter) are saying that BESS is back and I wouldn’t mind it at all! Other suggestions are Gettomasa & Sexmane, the latter of which already had his brother Isaac Sene competing in UMK 2022. “Intense” can mean anything though. One possibility could be Bee who just released her first album and was selected as “breakthrough of the year” by YleX. Jodel rumours suggested Evelina, but I have no idea how reliable that is.
7. A hard-hitting club banger by a well-known artist making a comeback
Jenni Vartiainen just returned from a five-year hiatus, moved back to Finland and published a new single. I doubt she’d participate in UMK as a contestant though since she is one of the most successful Finnish female artists of all time and could easily sell out an arena. Perhaps she’ll be the host this year and in return gets to perform the interval number like Antti Tuisku, Paula Vesala & Samu Haber? I'm leaning more towards Tuuli, who was kind of a teen pop star and is now making a comeback with new label and new style of music. One of the nominees for YleX's breakthrough of the year, released her newest album in August.
Bubbling under: At Tapiola Festivaali Käärijä asked the audience how many of us voted for him in UMK, and said “the rest of you voted for Kuumaa and Portion Boys, right?? next year you’ll get Arttu Wiskari and that’s exactly what you deserve” 😌

I played Club Penguin too! That I do kinda miss, tbh. But actually I *hated* popular club type music when I was 11-15. Besides Uniklubi and HIM, I basically liked the same music my mum did: Leonard Cohen, Chisu, Jippu, Jenni Vartiainen, Vesa-Matti Loiri.
I did like Queen and Adam Lambert too. And Glee, ironically. So I don't think I objectively hated the music itself, but the fake fantasy of youth popular culture tried to sell me.
I never had an innocent, carefree youth. Since age 9, I was acting as my mum's therapist, working with her delivering ads and selling pillowcases online, teaching her nursing math at 11, reminding her to pay bills and renovating with her at 14. My uncle had his knees broken with a baseball bat because of drug debts when I was 14.
I don’t think there's anything wrong with a kid or teen helping out a bit in renovating, but they should not have the responsibility of an adult, of the entire project depending on them. It was just me and my overstressed mum, both with undiagnosed ADHD and burnout.
And all of my own trauma, bullying and chronic illness on top of that 😅 Also being a paraphile and trans, though I didn't fully realize it until I was 16. But I definitely carried so much guilt, shame, dysphoria, fear and self-loathing for years before that.
For paraphilia stuff it first hit at 12, and stronger at 14. For dysphoria it fully hit at 13, but I did felt I didn't fit in with either girls or boys since I was 11 at least, and felt there was something wrong with me.
I was basically a sad man at 9. Maybe that's why I came to love history fadoms. I saw myself in Les Miserables, IWTV, Phantom of the Opera and Matilda, not in most modern teen media. I did love Percy Jackson, Artemis Fowl and the 2 Boys Army survivors in Septimus Heap. Vellum by Hal Duncan. Alec Lightwood in Mortal Instruments.
my nostalgia for circa 2010 club music is hysterical to me. i was not at “the club” in two thousand and ten, i was at home on the family computer singing along to “like a G6” as if i wasn’t in the G6th fucking grade
