I am constantly reminded that I am not allowed to simply have favorites. That when you establish a favorite it sets a standard in a way for content that falls in the same category. It might paint an interpretation.

But I don’t care at all about that when I say that illustrator Sam Neukirch is my new favorite artist.

My favorite memory of Jeff Fisher, even more so than the last time I saw him, was in my freshman year of college.

It had to be around November, maybe late October, the guy called me out of the blue. Was around 11pm, probably closer to 12. Just called up to shoot the shit, talk about my time in college so far, my teachers, alla that. Minute I mentioned Howard Beckerman, the man went off on the longest speech, talking about the time he’d spent getting to know Howie, the goofy joke they had together that I now cannot remember. (This is also the reason I always referred to Mr. Beckerman as ‘Howie’ where all my classmates would give me an odd look and call him ‘Howard’ WHOOPS)

We’d talk for a bit, but eventually 1am rolled around and I had to go. Walgreens visits can’t happen without me in tow, after all.

A month, maybe two, they all passed. I’m about to go home for the winter break, all my stuff packed, few hours before I go to bed. Who calls me but Jeff Fisher. Calls to ask me if I’ll be joining a few winter sessions while I’m home (Probably called me a shithead once or twice during this conversation, was pretty great.) 

Then we get to talking about me and my time in college. I mention Howard Beckerman, and Goddamn it. Jeff goes off and tells me the exact same Goddamn story about Howie Beckerman he told me two months prior, exact same set up, exact same joke they shared, everything. I swear to God, EXACT same story.

I miss you every day, big guy.
