Ah, now we’re really in the pining. Is there anything pining-er than the title of this song? The person is right there, and you want them, but you CAN’T TOUCH THEM. Or maybe you can, but you don’t know that yet, and you can’t tell if they’re suffering too or if they’re just going along carelessly without any idea what’s happening, happy to have a good friend while you’re dying inside.

To prove the piningness of the song, I’m just going to paste an excerpt of the chorus:

“Untouchable, burning brighter than the sun And when you're close, I feel like coming undone In the middle of the night, when I'm in this dream It's like a million little stars spelling out your name You got to come on, come on, say that we'll be together Come on, come on, little taste of heaven”

(Honestly, this is most of the lyrics to the song. It’s pretty repetitive–but then, pining is too. No matter what you do and how you try to distract yourself, you keep running up against the same longing and the same impossibility.)

It will probably surprise no one to hear that we have a few more pining-themed songs coming up. This one ended up lower ranked than some of the others, in large part because it just doesn’t have as much content. It does, though, have one very fun extra element: “A million little stars spelling out your name” = soulmate ’verse??

Pairing I’d assign to this song: There’s a sense of distance and awe in this song that feels to  me like an age difference. So I’m giving this one to Jeff Skinner and Eric Staal in Jeff’s first year on the Hurricanes. Let’s throw in the soulmate element, too. Jeff joins the team and is totally star-struck by Eric. A few weeks into the season, a soulmate mark shows up on his ribs: a constellation of stars. He’s so excited, thinking this has to mean that Eric is his soulmate. Who else has he met recently who’s affected his life this strongly? But Eric is getting out of a long-term relationship, and Jeff is such a baby, only eighteen years old. Eric would feel like such a creeper hitting on him. So even though he has a matching mark and has his guilty suspicions about who it’s for, he keeps it covered in the locker room and denies it when Jeff asks him. Jeff is devastated: he was so sure it was Eric, but he must have been wrong. He knows he has to move on. But no matter what he tries, he can’t get Eric out of his head. Eric even starts popping up in his dreams, shirtless with a constellation of stars on his ribs. Jeff knows it’s his crush giving him an overactive imagination–Eric wouldn’t have lied to him about his mark, right?–but he can’t stop wanting.

I feel like I get some variation on this ask every month or two, which is delightful, since it gives me a chance to remind myself of my plans for the wolfverse and keep it all fresh in my mind. Currently among the six (6!) scrivener documents I have open on my poor old bedraggled writing laptop are two different installments of wolfverse: the interconnected stories of the two elder Hughes brothers (Quinn/Brady and Jack/Nico, featuring ace!Quinn which I'm SO excited for). After I finish my current commissions, it's a bit of a tossup whether I dive into those or the Trevor sequel to the Jack/Nico D/s story, since I'm super excited to write all of them. I'm also planning on:

Trevor/Jamie (gotta fix that trade)

TK/Patty (omg so overdue, and probably needs to happen before Trevor/Jamie)

Cole/Nick?? idk, I've made him and Jack and Trevor all omegas on the USNTDP together, so it seems unfair if he doesn't get a story 😆

And then there are some throwbacks which I might write or which might just get folded into the other stories where there's team overlap:

PK/Carey -- I already made Carey a wolf in one of the Bennguin stories I think, so I'll need to decide what's going on with him and Carey before I write Jack/Nico

Claude/Danny -- Ditto with Claude and the TK/Patty story

Eric Staal/Jeff Skinner -- I was more excited about this one back when it looked like they'd be on the Sabres together for a while and before Eric was a jerk about Pride jerseys, but hey, still fun to make him a gay wolf!

I've also had asks about Lardunn and Roope/Wyatt, who I could see being included down the line, and Caroline Ouellette and Julie Chu have been on my list for ages (it would be so fun to explore what it means to be a female alpha). So as you can see, no plans to wrap up this 'verse anytime soon. 😄

now that the narrative is all here i have world building questions for you!!! specifically about scenting & a little about bonding: we know that mason/connor, kent/owen, to-be-bonded pairs in general have a different smell to their mate than they do to everybody else around them—is this like a soulmates type of deal? is there only one person who would smell different/better (connor is described as ice rink whereas mason always calls omegas vaguely “sweet”)? is it based off of compatibility? (could you have varying degrees of scent? could somebody’s scent change to you over time or do you always know immediately that you’re mates?) is a bond a conscious choice/what happens if a bond is left faulty? can it break? does the ex-bondmate’s scent change entirely then? would you be able to smell a new bond once your old bond broke (so it’s just one at a time) or is it one and done forever? ALSO!! sorry i am asking 10000 things, zero obligations/expectations for answers, but i just really want to know if there is a “generic alpha smell” in the same way that omegas are “sweet” (and is it “spicy” :))) <3

i honestly did not think through a lot of these questions when i was conceptualizing this story! i am generally anti soulmates bc i think people having agency is more interesting. loosely, my thinking about this universe was that people you are compatible with are going to have a more distinct and alluring scent to you. you have the potential to bond with anyone you’re compatible with, usually intentionally via intimacy, although 18-24yo dudes often have an artificially narrow idea of what intimacy is and that’s how people end up, say, accidentally bonding in the tunnel at mullett arena.

as the dynamic expert explains to mason, you’ll eventually heal from a faulty bond although it takes time. i think in that situation the parties would still recognize their scents as compatible, however. (possibly this is the tragic backstory of jeff skinner and eric staal i alluded to earlier.)

yes there is a generic alpha smell and it’s best described as “earthy.”
