I wanted to share one last image from our visit to the Barnes Modigliani exhibition now that the exhibition has closed. Notice how the curvature of model and muse Jeanne Hebuterne’s neck mirrors the curve of the chair and the seem to caress. At the same time, Modigliani has seated her awkwardly in the chair—partially off, somewhat twisted and leaning out of the chair. This contrast between torso and head lends tension to the work and prevents it from becoming another static portrait. #modigliani #jeannehebuterne @barnesfoundation #modernart #modernism #jewishartist #italianartist #paintingoftheday #schoolofparispainters #écoledeparispeinture #figurativeart #portraitart https://www.instagram.com/p/Coa2_y4LZxq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

SONG OF THE WEEK “Dancing Barefoot” (a live Patti Smith cover) https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/dancin-barefoot-live-8-02 This song is described as a poetic exploration of love, spirituality, and the freedom of expression. At its core, the song erupts from a raw and unfiltered place, liberated from societal norms and expectations while honoring one’s search for transcendence and divine experience. Patti Smith said it was inspired by her relationship with late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who she called her “soulmate and creative partner.” Smith also dedicated the song to Jeanne Hébuterne, the French painter and art model for Amedeo Modigliani, who both had short but impassioned lives.
Smith first released the song in May 1979, and it’s become one of her touchstones as a songwriter. It’s been covered by many artists, but it was the U2 version that first caught my ear. Bono chose not to change genders in the lyrics, which opens the song to a God interpretation. The line “I spin so ceaselessly” points to the whirling dervishes in Sufi Muslim and ancient Hebrew traditions—in the Book of Samuel, King David danced a dervish with such fervor that his clothing flew off, witnessed by servants and subjects. David’s wife scolded him for dancing like no one was looking, but he didn’t care because he was “dancing for the Lord.” The atmospheric chords are syncopated in a garage-punk-tango, echoing spy movie soundtracks, surf music, and British Invasion psychedelica. The song connects audiences with something deep and authentic.

#jeannehebuterne #montpatnasse #arte #pittura #madit #modigliani #amedeomodiglianiicoloridellanima❤️👁. grazie a Nazzarena Bernardi https://www.instagram.com/p/CKgwa_hApJ6/?igshid=uwy1okd0cn6w

A thought another interesting compare and contrast was between Matisse’s “Woman in Blue” from 1937 and Modigliani’s Portrait of Jeanne Hebuterne from 1918. I would start by remarking on how each artist has situated his model in the painting. She is seated front and center, looking at us directly, whereas Jeanne Hebuterne appears to lean sideways into and away from the chair in a sinuous pose. #matisse #modigliani #portraitart #modernism #jeannehebuterne #bluewoman #paintingoftheday #italianartist #frenchartist #jewishartist #barnesfoundation #figurativeart https://www.instagram.com/p/CnfvnvKrEIk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
