Old Land Cruiser Wins Against the New
Tumblr media
Toyota just unveiled the most recent iteration of their renowned Land Cruiser SUV, which is built on brand-new architecture and features a twin-turbo V-6 engine. Here, we'll remind you of the key distinctions between the current and previous versions.
The Motor:
A newly created 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 409 horsepower (305 kW) and 650 Nm of torque has replaced the 5.7-liter V8.
The turbo pair allows the V6 to generate almost 30 horsepower more than the V8 despite having fewer cylinders. Torque increases considerably by about 108 Nm, and the engine is also more efficient than the engine in the previous iteration.
Front Exterior:
The GR Yaris hot hatch and Supra's headlight design are somewhat evocative of the new front of the LC300, which adds a touch of modernity both inside and out.
The latest generation features two front grilles, albeit one of them is small in size and extends from the bottom of the huge grille to contact the headlamps as soon as we glance at the automobile. The Land Cruiser 2022 now has a more intimidating aspect than the 2021 model, which has a massive grille that separates the headlamps into two halves.
Rear Exterior:
The slimmer LED lights in the 2022 edition, combined with a thinner back glass, made the design seem smaller than the previous car, which led many fans to prefer the older version.
The Interior:
With the addition of an entertainment system compatible with a 9-inch screen as standard and a 12.3-inch screen as an option, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, the inside of the 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser underwent clear and sophisticated improvements.
The potential for wireless smartphone charging, a 360-degree camera, and a front screen on the windscreen are other distinguishing features.
The Land Cruiser 2021, on the other hand, has an integrated navigation system with a 9-inch touchscreen and wireless charging for gadgets. A 14-speaker JBL audio system and satellite radio are included as standard. The options menu may include a rear-seat entertainment system with two 11.6-inch screens and a pair of wireless headphones.
We appreciate everyone who voted, and please check back frequently for new Tazweed coverage.

Here Are 5 Futuristic Sound System Upgrades Headed for Your Next EV Car
In an eco-tastic, electrically powered, range-anxious automotive future, bangin’ audio systems will no longer have the luxury of using dozens of giant, heavy speaker magnets powered by zillion-watt amplifiers. Why? Because weight is the enemy of modern electric cars—the more of it onboard, the more stunted its ultimate range per charge. Everyone wants EVs these days to go farther and farther on a charge, so why waste precious energy moving more mass and powering ludicrously loud audio speakers? Harman’s 2020 CES display takes on this reality, with an eye toward how customers can have both efficient motoring and a decent sound system. Here are a few of Harman’s audio solutions for auto manufacturers to consider:
Ecotect Enviro-Friendly Sound Yes, we’re talking about the future here, but audio giant Harman International already has a mass- and energy-efficient suite of products marketed under the umbrella name “Ecotect.” The system utilizes a high-efficiency speaker/amplifier system, with a proprietary Prodigy Booster amp adding a new ability to measure both the voltage and current draw of each speaker instantaneously. From this feed, the system can calculate real-time impedance and can know exactly how far the speaker cone is from the magnet, enabling the amp to deliver precisely as much—or as little—power as each speaker needs/can handle given the volume demand.
By making the speakers “work smarter, not harder,” the system requires fewer speakers to achieve sound similar to systems with more speakers. As such, the Ecotect architecture can replicate the rich sound of a super-premium audio system at half the mass and considerably less total power usage (peak moments may draw 700-800 watts, but the median is down around 50 watts). And sophisticated signal processing allows them to deliver premium audio along with other Harman enabled communications experiences (see below) and active noise cancelling.
Cloud-Upgradable Sound To future-proof your new electric (or other) vehicle audio system against emerging music-delivery/sharing apps and form factors, the Harman Ignite ecosystem of cloud-connected services is preparing to deliver new over-the-air upgrades to your audio system. These are ready for implementation as your mood and/or budget dictate. Planning a road trip to a live-music festival and wish your Ecotect system could replicate the live sound-stage ambiance of the JBL system in old Supra? Long for the immersive jazz-club vibe of your beloved Subaru Harman-Kardon system? Log into Harman’s Audio Marketplace and simply click “buy now,” and download branded audio software. Such upgrades can be selected at the time of purchase or activated later in the vehicle’s life. Perhaps you’ll add them for the duration of your family road trip, or purchase a lifetime license that transfers to ride-share or rental vehicles you log into.
Immersive NatureScapes Harman has partnered with the National Park Foundation to bring the sounds of your favorite national parks to life inside your vehicle. Authentic recordings are made at points of interest inside each park, like Yosemite Falls and Mammoth Dome at America’s oldest national park, Yosemite. What better way to unplug from the stress of dense traffic or enliven the monotony of dull scenery than by tuning in some real sounds of nature for a serene and centering experience inside your vehicle. You can even program the system to softly play music over the NatureScapes, as if you’re picnicking while softly listening to your favorite jams.
Voice-Sensing Volume Fade In the quiet interior of an electric vehicle folks can speak in more hushed tones—that is, if they’re not shouting over the sound system. Voice-Sensing Volume Fade uses sensors to differentiate in-car communication from music, seamlessly adjusting the audio volume level down when a conversation is taking place, then automatically turning it up when the conversation ends like a veteran radio DJ working those sound-board sliders.
eESS Safe and Sound By now most of us have heard the weird spaceship, Jetsons-style noises some electric vehicles make to warn sight-impaired or device-distracted pedestrians that an otherwise silent EV is approaching. Harman takes that technology a step farther by using a pair of closely spaced higher-quality exterior audio speakers in the car’s front and rear ends for this task. Said speakers are fairly well protected from the elements, and while there are two of them at each end of the vehicle, they play the same monaural signal. Now, when you stop for a roadside picnic lunch or a dance party in stopped traffic on an Los Angeles on- or off-ramp, these external speakers can work with the in-car subwoofer to deliver external, dance-worthy jams.

2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid spied in India ahead of January launch
Tumblr media
The ninth-generation Toyota Camry Hybrid has been spotted in camouflage exactly a month before its India launch. RushLane published a spy shot of the popular Japanese sedan when it was reportedly being tested in Bangalore. The new Camry Hybrid will replace the outgoing model that’s been on sale for the last six years. It’s expected to sport a longer wheel-base and be more sophisticated on the tech front. Like the outgoing model, the new Toyota Camry Hybrid will be manufactured in India and employ a hybrid powertrain that houses both, a petrol engine and an electric motor. The new Camry Hybrid will be based on the GA-K architecture that’s shared with the Lexus ES300h. The wheelbase of the new model has been upped by 50mm, leaving it at 2,825mm. On the outside, the new Camry Hybrid is said to sport a V-shaped grille and feature sharper edges all around. The raised boot lid gets new tail lamps as well. On the inside, there’s an 8-inch screen for the infotainment system and a 10-inch colour display for head-up information. The heads-up display should show essential info like current driving speed and navigation steps. The instrument cluster ditches traditional dials for a 7-inch multi-information display. Seats are powered and cooled and there’s a 9-speaker JBL sound system along with climate control and a wireless smartphone charging system. On the safety front, the new Camry Hybrid gets numerous airbags all around the cabin, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, radar-based cruise control and lane-departure alert. The 4-cylinder petrol engine, combined with the 88kW electric motor, produces a total of 205 horsepower. The new Camry Hybrid is expected to launch on January 18 next year at a price of around Rs 38 lakh. When launched in India, it will compete against the likes of the Honda Accord Hybrid and the Volkswagen Passat. 2021 Toyota Mirai Concept Revealed: Ugly Duckling Becomes Beautiful Swan
For 2021, Toyota is wadding up the “design” of its fuel cell electric Mirai and starting fresh. Almost nothing at all is expected to carry over from the current-generation car, which is welcome news for those of us who have regarded the current Toyota Mirai’s visage in much the same way Perseus did the mythological monster Medusa. And perhaps the internal mandate that super-efficient Toyotas be wrapped in hideous sheetmetal has at last been rescinded. I mean, remove your safety blinders and look at this long-hood, short-deck, four-door coupe. The concept version of the 2021 Mirai pictured here is beautiful. It looks for all the world like a Lexus relieved of its predator grille.
Lexus Bones?
Indeed, the next Mirai will ride on an as yet unspecified rear-drive platform. Its 114.9-inch wheelbase slots comfortably between those of the Lexus LC (113.0 inches) and LS (116.9 inches) variants of the TNGA-L platform. Those cars seem about as wide as the ’21 Mirai model we were shown in advance of its Tokyo Motor Show public debut. Or perhaps it will share the new electric-optimized e-TNGA platform, which is slated to underpin 10 global models that will begin hitting the market next year. That platform is designed to accommodate front-drive, dual-motor AWD, or the Mirai’s new rear-wheel-drive setup. This change is aimed at boosting the car’s dynamic driving appeal. Engaging dynamics and beautiful design are but two of the changes Toyota is making to help the Mirai earn its $60,000-plus price tag, thereby hopefully broadening its customer base beyond the current crop of planet-savior/design-martyrs. Why not just badge it a Lexus? Because the Toyota brand has traditionally pioneered hybrid and fuel cell technology.
Handles Like No Other Toyota
The longer, lower, wider Mirai, we’re assured, will set a new benchmark for Toyota sedans in terms of dynamics. Rear drive and a broader stance are two steps in the right direction, and a third is the availability of 20-inch wheels and tires. We’re also told the next Mirai will boast improved aerodynamics, an even quieter cabin, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a 14-speaker JBL sound system, and five-passenger seating when it goes on sale in late 2020. One thing that may not return to the standard equipment list: complimentary hydrogen refueling (up to $15,000).
400-Mile Range
Moving to the larger premium rear-drive architecture will add weight, but improvements to the next generation of fuel cell stack and a slightly higher-capacity tank are expected to extend the 2021 Toyota Mirai’s driving range by 30 percent (the current generation is rated for 312 miles). We expect more specific information regarding the efficiency improvements, mass, dimensions, etc. to be released later in the year.
30,000 Per Year!
To date, Toyota has sold just 6,000 Mirais in the U.S. since its 2015 launch. Or more accurately, leased almost 6,000 Mirais in Southern California (less than 1 percent have chosen the purchase option). Japan has been the Mirai’s second best sales market, with Europe in a distant third. An aggressive global sales goal of 30,000 Mirais per year is based on a drastic sales redistribution. Japan and Europe now have way more hydrogen fueling stations than we have in the U.S., and hence those regions are expected to get way more Mirais. (That’s why the new Mirai is a sedan and not an SUV or crossover.) Many new hydrogen stations are poised to open in the northeastern U.S., as soon as some Hindenberg-informed legacy laws prohibiting hydrogen in tunnels or on bridges can be amended. When that happens, Mirai sales will begin in that region. And all hydrogen stations are becoming more user-friendly, with fewer of them suffering the “icing” problems we occasionally experienced with our long-term 2016 Mirai.
Toyota’s fuel cell technology is clearly maturing, and for EV-buyers that don’t have access to a home charging setup, five-minute hydrogen refueling is way more attractive than the available battery charging options. Now it’s a race to develop the refueling infrastructure quickly enough to assuage buyer range anxieties so that production scale economies can bring fuel cell vehicle pricing down to where the general public can afford it. But when that happens, please, Toyota, don’t revert to hideous design.

Roku is getting a jump on the holiday shopping season with the arrival of new and updated devices. The company is expanding its media player lineup for the U.S. and abroad with updated versions of both its entry-level and high-end players, the Roku Express and Roku Ultra, respectively. It’s also introducing a new version of the Roku Express exclusively for Walmart, and a Streaming Stick that will be exclusively sold at Best Buy. Alongside the new hardware, it’s beginning to roll out an update to Roku’s operating system, with Roku OS 9.2, that focuses on improved search and discovery features, including the launch of curated search results it’s calling “Roku Zones.”
On the hardware side, the low-end Roku Express ($29.99) has been redesigned to be 10% than the last version, and can now be fully powered by most TVs’ USB port to reduce clutter.
And while we haven’t yet seen the results of the recent announcement of Roku’s plans to offer products to Walmart to be sold under the retailer’s own Onn brand, Roku is continuing to work with its retail partner on exclusive devices. The Roku Express+ model has dropped last year’s support for the analog inputs designed to work with older TVs, and instead bundles in the Roku voice remote for $39.99.
Roku’s entry-level 4K player, the Roku Premiere, will be sold at the same price point with a standard remote.
The two streaming stick form factors, the Streaming Stick+ and Streaming Stick+ HE, will both be $59.99 for the time being. While both are 4K-ready, the latter will be sold exclusively at Best Buy and will swap in an Enhanced Voice Remote with the headphone jack for private listening and Roku headphones. The Streaming Stick+ will offer the voice remote with TV controls instead. That begs to see a price point drop, but Roku isn’t yet announcing anything on that front.
Meanwhile, at the upper end of the lineup sits the Roku Ultra ($99.99). This more expensive device supports HD, 4K and HDR picture quality, and features a quad-core processor, 802.11ac dual-band wireless, Ethernet, a USB port and a MicroSD slot for local media playback, and supports Dolby and DTS Digital Sound. It ships with Roku’s Enhanced Voice Remote with JBL headphones for private listening.
This remote has been upgraded, too, with personal shortcut buttons that can be mapped to any Roku voice command. For example, you could say “Watch Disney+” or “Watch Brooklyn Nine-Nine” or “play jazz on Pandora” and make that one of your buttons.
What’s new this year is an entry-level Ultra edition for $79.99 that will be a Walmart exclusive. The device drops a few features like the Remote Finder and USB port, and it sports the older specs. It ships with the Enhanced Voice Remote with TV control and Roku headphones.
The Roku Express and Roku Ultra are available for pre-order at Roku.com today. The Roku Express and Roku Express+ will be available at the end of September with the rest of the devices on sale in October.
The Roku Express, Roku Premiere and Roku Streaming Stick+ are expected to be available outside the U.S. in the weeks ahead in Canada, the U.K., the Republic of Ireland and select countries in Latin America.
ROKU OS 9.2
As per usual, Roku’s fall update isn’t only hardware-focused. The operating system that powers its players is being updated, too, with the launch of Roku OS 9.2.
The standout feature is a search and discovery update called Roku Zones.
These “zones” are actually curated content collections organized around a genre, like “drama movies and TV,” or a theme, like holiday movies, for example. The zones will appear in the search results when you do a relevant search. Unlike the typically text-based search results, zones are visual guides with thumbnail images, scrollable rows, and content sourced from Roku’s partners — the same partners whose content would otherwise appear in its search results.
Today, that’s grown to nearly 40 partners, including both free and paid channels. It will also feature content from your subscriptions and The Roku Channel.
The Roku OS update additionally includes a redesigned 4K spotlight channel that now uses the Zones architecture to similarly organize content; plus a new “Tips & Tricks” channel with helpful how-to videos on using Roku; the addition of voice-controlled sleep timers on Roku TVs; and a fun feature that lets you search for movie quotes by voice.
Roku Voice search can now find 4K movies and users can now control personal music, movies, and photos using voice commands, too. Alexa and Google Assistant users can control multiple Roku devices in the home with voice commands, with the 9.2 update.
The update will also bring support for the new Roku Wireless Subwoofer when Roku TV Wireless speakers are paired to a Roku TV, as earlier promised.
And it’s introducing a new “shortcuts” feature that will let you stick common actions — like adding channels, setting sleep timers or powering off the TV (soon) — right on the Roku homescreen.
The company says Roku OS 9.2 will begin rolling out to select Roku players this month and is expected to roll out to all supported streaming players, including the recently launched Roku Smart Soundbar, in the next few weeks.
Roku TV models are expected to receive the update in phases in the next few months.
