The Orielles - Come Down On Jupiter

The Orielles are an act that I came to primarily as a singles band. I remember them early on when they were releasing goofy indie 45s and thinking “it’s gonna be so great when they release an album!”, and then they did and…. it just felt like a massive dilution of what they’d been doing up until then. It was basically more of the same but not as good, something which has held until their most recent LP Tableau, a genuinely strange record which stands up a lot better than its predecessors. Originally, they were a band of ideas who, at their best, never allowed that to distract from the giddy rush of pop music and, while what they’ve turned into now perhaps has more to recommend it overall, my memories of them will always come back to thrill of their early singles and to this one in particular.

Come Down On Jupiter Is the lead track from their similarly not bad but somewhat disappointing second album Disco Volador. It’s an ambitious song but one that wears its learning lightly, pulling all sorts of musical traditions together into what’s basically a fun indiepop banger. While Orielles’ contemporaries were cosplaying as Clash and Fall rip offs, Come Down On Jupiter is far more engaged with the likes of cool jazz and Factory funk. But their expansive palette is never a forced thing and so when they launch into the song’s none more indie chorus, they manage to channel the bounce and fun of those influences into something that captures all of their own youthful energy too. 

Whilst the song itself takes a fairly basic form, the journey it goes on is pretty wild. Opening with a washed out jazz shuffle, it moves through blasts of post punk energy in the second verse to finish in increasingly deranged territory, full of menacingly elastic bass riffs and ESG style whoops that reflect their particular brand of musical scavengery. Whilst everything seems to arrive out of nowhere, they still somehow feel like natural developments that weave comfortably into more than the sum of their parts. Had they managed to keep up this standard, they might well have taken this kind of playful ambition to a much wider audience. As it stands, Come Down On Jupiter is still a great record on its own terms.

20 for ’20: #1 Protomartyr - "Ultimate Success Today" (Domino)

"Ultimate Success Today", the fifth and best so far effort by Protomartyr, unleashes a dystopian post-punk maelstrom which perfectly describes the chaos of 2020, although recorded a year earlier. Verses about “a foreign disease washed up on the beach” and “riot in the streets” makes you believe Joe Casey, at some point prior to writing the lyrics of standout track “Processed by the Boys”, had access to a magic portal into the near future. Musically the Detroit quartet has never sounded better; their tight sonic assault is getting more precise and refined, therefore more lethally effective than ever, while saxophone adds a free jazz dimension to their Pere Ubu - meets - The Fall post-apocalyptic boogie.

And with Protomartyr’s ultimately successful album, one of our 5 Albums of the Year, we are concluding the countdown of our 20 favorite albums of 2020. From “Femina Palast” to “Ellington Hotel Berlin“ ... a living piece of history

It was here where Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington performed in the legendary jazz club “Badewanne”, David Bowie, Romy Haag and Lou Reed partied in the no less legendary “Dschungel”, and old UFA heroes and later television stars stood on the stage of the “Berlin Theatre”. The building on Nürnberger Straße 50-55 in the city center west – transformed via loving detail work in 2007 into ELLINGTON HOTEL BERLIN – is an establishment with tradition.

The building known under the names “Haus Nürnberg”, “Femina or Tauentzien Palast” that emerged from 1928 to 1931 under the impression of the pioneering buildings by Berlin architect Erich Mendelsohn was designed by a very successful team of architects at that time, Richard Bielenberg and Josef Moser in a combination of Art Déco and Bauhaus style. They designed one of the longest, most conspicuous and perhaps also one of the most beautiful facades in Berlin: elongated ribbon windows across the continuous shop floor expose the four upper floors. The wall areas are clad with lavish travertine and framed by small ribbons of dark bricks below and above the strongly profiled windows. The 185 metre long façade is structured through staircase towers and oriels. The entrances and display windows of the shop front are framed in brass. This also contributes towards the elegant exterior of this commercial building. 

But the domicile of the Ellington Hotel is not only listed because of the largely originally preserved façade. The entrance rooms, staircases and a few halls inside also preserve the charm of the late twenties and early thirties: in white and green wall tiles, brass staircase railings, stucco ornaments on the ceilings and gold-plated lettering on the walls.

FIRST WAVE OF ARTISTS ANNOUNCED FOR DOT TO DOT FESTIVAL 2019

The first wave of acts have been unveiled for Dot To Dot Festival 2019; CRYSTAL FIGHTERS, JORDAN RAKEI, SWIM DEEP, THE NIGHT CAFÉ, DREAM WIFE, THE ORIELLES, LAUREN AQUILINA, VIAGRA BOYS, MINI MANSIONS plus loads more will head to Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham on 24-26th May 2019 for its 15th year. The award-winning day long festival will once again feature a line-up full of both established performers and the best emerging artists from the UK and around the world. CRYSTAL FIGHTERS will headline Dot To Dot 2019, a band who have been an integral part of the alternative dance scene since the release of their debut album 'Star of Love' in 2010. Widely adored for their catchy songwriting and penchant for glitter, the English/Spanish trio built upon the momentum created by their debut with the release of 2013's 'Cave Rave' and 2016's 'Everything Is My Family'. These follow-ups saw the band evolve their party-fixated electro punchiness, to an evocative, euphoria-inducing summery sound. The group's endless energy and arsenal of feel-good anthems have made them a magnificent live proposition, helping them to forge a reputation for creating a celebratory party atmosphere wherever they play. JORDAN RAKEI will be bringing his jazz and hip-hop driven sound to Dot To Dot 2019. After previously wowing audiences at Dot To Dot in 2015, SWIM DEEP are welcomed back to the lineup this year. An integral part of Birmingham's B-Town generation alongside Peace and Jaws, the band currently have two album releases to their name; 2013's 'Where the Heaven Are We' and 2015's 'Mothers'. With these albums, came a collection of inimitable singles such as 'Honey', 'King City' and 'One Great Song and I Could Change the World'. End of Year Wrap-Up 24/12/2018

Happy Merry to all you readers!

I’ve had a great year but all us music fans have had an even better one! Streaming services mean that now more than ever we can experience the musical output from all corners of the globe (though overwhelmingly the English-speaking parts of it) to understand different points of view, learn of the goings on in other parts of the world and most importantly indulge ourselves in a bit of a boogie. All the moods, genres and feels you could think of are out there, so over the holiday period perhaps try and listen to something new. Who knows it might break the tension with that younger/older relative round the xmas table when you find they also happen to like k-pop/jazz-funk/grindcore or at the very least you can bicker about the tragedy of the current album charts (Greatest Showman: 21 weeks!). To aid you in your quest for knowledge/excitement/small-talk I have spent almost 30 minutes curating a best-of for both albums and singles in the year of 2018.

Tableau by The Orielles

The Orielles return with ‘Tableau’, their truly extraordinary third album. Released on October 7th. The Orielles have created their first genuinely contemporary record - an experimental double album self-produced in collaboration with producer Joel Anthony Patchett (King Krule, Tim Burgess). In doing so, the Orielles have utilised holistic jazz practices, oblique 21st century electronica, experimental 1960s tape loop methods, otherworldly AutoTuned vocal sounds, the downer dub of Burial, Sonic Youth’s focus on improvisation and feedback, and Brian Eno’s legendary Oblique Strategy cards. Tableau is a double black vinyl release. The bandcamp vinyl edition will include a fanzine designed by The Orielles and Ben Thompson. Featuring photos by Neelam Khan Vela. • At the end of 2020, the Orielles - vocalist and bassist Esmé Hand-Halford, drummer Sidonie Hand-Halford and guitarist Henry Carlyle-Wade - regrouped to rehearse in Manchester, the city that the band have made their home across the last five years. When all of the band’s live dates to promote their second album were scrapped due to the pandemic, the group instead spent 2020 creating La Vita Olistica, a high-concept art film directed and written by the Hand-Halford sisters which they toured in cinemas across the following year. “When we’ve talked about being influenced by film, people think we mean directors but it’s not that at all” explains Esmé, “it’s about trying to make those ebbs, and flows, and creating tension.” Ideas from scoring that film was beginning to filter into the band’s rehearsals - this would be the beginning of a series of creative breakthroughs that would result in Tableau. One such breakthrough came when the Orielles were booked to host a monthly show on Soho Radio. Broadcasts quickly became impromptu research and development sessions for the ideas that would feed into the album. “Doing that monthly meant we had a reason to meet up, once a month in lockdown for work” says Henry, “and bring two hours of music between us which we’d play, discuss, hold physically and share.” “We’ve all felt a bit dissatisfied with modern music before” explains Esmé, “then we discovered we were looking in the wrong places.” “We switched from playing a lot of old stuff” nods Henry, “and now we’re all buying stuff direct from labels’ websites. We’re tapped into contemporary shit now.” A further breakthrough came whilst remixing another band’s track in a studio in Goyt, on the edge of Stockport. This became the Goyt method, a central idea behind Tableau. “To Goyt it” explains Sidonie, “that’s getting all these pieces and rearranging them. We had vocal melodies and ideas that we’d then run through and sample, and play them on sample pads. We were being editors, really.” Where the band had previously only gone into the studio once songs had been tightly crafted at the demo stage, the Orielles began to consider new practices in line with the modern sound they were aspiring to. No demo’s. Heavy improvisation. And no producer - only the band collaborating with friend and producer Joel Anthony Patchett. “I came up alongside them, engineering on their first two records and each record became more collaborative” explains Patchett, “and we grew closer when they moved to Manchester. It felt super natural working together in a scenario where they wanted a creative level playing fielding. I think that’s a great way to make an album.” That album would be mostly recorded across Summer 2021 holed away in the Sussex coastal town of Eastbourne. Its recording is a story of experimentation, improvisation and a band discovering how to create an entirely new sonic palette. In one instance, to create a state of almost total improvisation, Patchett blindfolded the band and asked them to pick up an instrument that they would not ordinarily use. “We didn’t know who had picked up what” explains Esmé, “Henry went onto the fretless bass, I was on piano and Sid was on the Wurlitzer, which Joel was echoing live but we couldn’t hear that.” That became the exploratory, even mournful track Transmission. In line with contemporary dance music and the sour, other-worldly vocal production of acts like FKA Twigs and Burial, the band began experimenting heavily with treating Esmé’s vocals (just listen to the outro on the remarkable, near 8 minute Beam.) Likewise, Sidonie’s drums transformed from previously having been recorded as an acoustic instrument to simply another sound to be electronically treated, often sped up to something closer to jungle or UK Garage. As well as the adoption of contemporary 21st century production, the Orielles used concepts from the world of art and minimalism in creating Tableau. Sidonie had researched the graphic scoring method of Pulitzer Prize nominated trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith. “It’s like automatic writing but with drawing” Sidonie explains, “he’d show them to players and they’d just play that, just playing the imagery. We did a similar thing for the modular synth that’s on Beam. We drew Joel a graphic score to follow, showing where we thought the ebbs and flows should go.” The band also utliised Oblique Strategies - the playing cards designed to aide creativity created by Brian Eno and artist Peter Schmidt in the early 1970s. “We’d been speaking about wanting to use them for ages, and then we found a set of cards at the studio in Eastbourne” explains Sidonie, “before each song, we’d pick out a card and that would be our motif for playing that take.” On another occasion, when a brush broke suddenly during a drum take, Sidonie began playing the snare with her fingers - something she had seen legendary soul drummer Bernard Purdie do. This speaks to an album that’s fixated on chance, automatic processes and alternate methods of editing. The result is a double album that rewards serious immersion, as complex as it is diverse. Initially, there might appear to be little that links the Sonic Youth dirge of Television with the spectral, beatless Some Day Later. Or tracks like Hornflower Remembered and The Room, which carry the influence of the 21st century dance the band have been devouring, with the challenging extended song suite that makes up the album’s A-side. Further listening, however, reveals recurring motifs and sonic ideas that bind the album’s sixteen tracks together closely. Perhaps the most succinct explanation of the album’s aims is in the standout Darekened Corners. A repeated organ motif circling around a dense Yo La Tengo guitar groove, the track was inspired by Esmé visiting a 2021 Berlin retrospective of American photographer Lee Friedlander. What if, thought Esmé, a photograph was speaking to its maker? “The exhibition had these monuments, and it was photographs and the photographer speaking to each other” explains Esmé, “and that felt quite apt for this album.” As such, all three of the band take vocals on the track for the first time, representing different aspects of the photograph in dialogue. Another first would be the band using strings on the album, inviting the Northern Session Collective - led by celebrated violinist Isobella Baker, who worked with Patchett on scoring the strings. At the end of those sessions, when the collective had recorded all the tracks scheduled for the record, the band asked the players to improvise over a song they had not previously heard - The Improvisation, reflecting the working methods that had produced that track. “We said we’re not going to judge, just listen and react to it” remembers Sidonie. “They said they’d worked with big pop artists” says Esmé, “but that was one of the most spiritual and exciting things they’d ever done.” Though Tableau is likely to challenge preconceptions, this is something the band suggest they have been doing for quite some time anyway. “All through our whole career we’ve had to prove ourselves so, so much” explains Henry. “You can’t disconnect the age and the gender thing either” adds Esmé, “People belittle your age because they see women in the band. Whereas lad bands, if they’re eighteen it’s apparently exactly what people want to see.” Being from a small town in West Yorkshire may have added to that also, but Sidonie counters that “being from Halifax has also been a blessing, it’s kept our egos in check.” Perhaps more than any of this, though, Tableau is also simply the product of the unique telepathy between three singular musicians that have grown in symbiosis for over a decade now - simply the three of them in a room. “As creators, for the fact we’ve produced it ourselves, it feels like a starting point” suggests Esmé, “even though everything that’s going previously has counted, this now feels like Ground Zero.” For the future, now, it’s all gates open. クレジット2022年10月7日リリース

She doesn’t really like to look at people, even now, but she can’t help glancing at Mariah, eventually shyly admitting she is in fact JazzReel, the girl who helped many people fix smaller issues with their laptops. Can she actually find love with a new girl in her life and can she trust Mariah?

Hello. I hope you and yours are well. As is tradition, below are my selections for albums and songs of the year. As I have yet to receive a reply from you, dear reader, sincerely asking to unsubscribe, you are therefore the proud recipient of the list once more! I’ve altered the format from 5 tracks each month because, as I suspect many of you did, I went into a nostalgic hole for large chunks of this year (for me this consisted of at least two months of nothing but Funkadelic, which does mean my personalised algorithm is now ace), but also when I looked back at when many of these tracks were released it was front heavy for the first half of the year – another body blow to the supposed “monthly” mailer. I even considered not writing my one-liners, but where is the fun in that? Furthermore, trying to keep the long list to 60 tracks in total (equivalent to 5 per month) proved overly frustrating, so I’ve included some extras, especially as this year felt 13 month long. The Men – Wading In Dirty Water Avid readers will know I’m a fan of these guys and this one rides a familiar Crazy Horse choogle Tame Impala – Breathe Deeper Funky bass, piano flourishes, solid synths, all groove Kanaan – Urgent Excursions To the Tundrasphere Ok, here it is, there’s always going to be at least one – this is the 14 min space rock jam – skip/enjoy! Frazey Ford – Golden This production is right up my street, soulful vocals swoop around tight rhythm section and hammond keys, an analogue dream Caribou – You and I From the analogue to a digital master, man this beat is catchy Pulled By Magnets – Cold Regime People Die File this under terrifying experimental jazz Jonathan Wilson – Riding The Blinds JW doing that 6/8 minor ballad thang Baxter Dury – Say Nothing Another album I loved this year and could have picked any number of tracks, so here’s a quote from Baxter: “My craft and in a sense a certain style has been perfected and it’s easy… I don’t have to do it again basically. I don’t want to hear another man talking over an orchestral background.” Ha! U.S. Girls – 4 American Dollars Slick funky, soulful, classic strings, building into a brilliant outro with great lyrics Deeper – Lake Song Detached vibe ala Joy Division / The Cure done through a Pavement lens with serious downer lyrics Pretty Lightning – Voo Doo Boo Swampy dirge guitar grooves Tamikrest – Anha Achal Wad Namda Another mailer favourite, Touareg guitar wizards Tony Allen, Hugh Masekela – Never (Lagos Never Gonna Be the Same) Master drummer who sadly passed away earlier this year just after this release, and two years after master trumpeter Masekela’s own passing, this track is a buzzing tribute to Fela Myrkur – House Carpenter Danish black metaller does Scandinavian folk: bright and beautiful Sufjan Stevens, Lowell Brams – The Runaround A weird album, even by Sufjan standards, but I found these electronic ambient sounds strangely comforting R.A.P. Ferreira – ABSOLUTES Rhythm & poetry The Weeknd – Blinding Lights What can I add to the smash of 2020? Catchy af Porridge Radio – Long Indie banger, with a decidedly angry, bitter, playful lyrics Cleo Sol – Her Light If online research is to be believed Cleo is part of the collective in SAULT with producer Inflo, but this album is standalone brilliance without knowing that, this is pure vintage soul vibes Malena Zavala – En la Noche I returned to this track more than any other this year, the rhythm, the vocals, the melody, the production, even if I have to use google translate to fully understand the lyrics Tom Misch, Yussef Dayes – Lift Off Molten guitar, groovy arrangements, and plenty of business from Dayes Yves Tumor – Kerosene! An absolute belter, amazing vocals, groove and crescendo perfection Warm Digits, The Orielles – Shake The Wheels Off (feat. The Orielles) Immediate synth pop, indie dancefloor (with some solid cowbell) EOB – Brasil First solo venture for Ed, acoustic folk gives way to rumbling bass banger, would very much like to experience this in a field Other Lives – Hey Hey I Grand rocking orchestral aural assault with hints of Morricone Elephant Tree – Sails Fulfilling the heavy dirge quota, that hit at 2:33 is a proper head in the speakers moment The Strokes – Why Are Sundays So Depressing This album snuck up on me, and then I found myself listening to it non-stop, this track such an ear worm Houses of Heaven – In Soft Confusion I think the right descriptor is darkwave – insistent drum machine, reverb soaked vocals, industrial production, gloomy pop hooks Joel Sarakula – Don’t Give Up on Me Operating in a dangerous space between homage and pastiche, groove and parody, this is smooth easy yacht rock Donny Benét – Second Dinner Following hot on the heels of pastiche, this time with tongue firmly in cheek, The Don and his 80s reverence lolz Perfume Genius – Whole Life Completely arresting, the lyrics an absolute gut punch, yet still gorgeous Jake Blount – Beyond This Wall From the press release, this album “features fourteen carefully chosen tracks drawn from Blount’s extensive research of Black and Indigenous mountain music. The result is an unprecedented testament to the voices paradoxically obscured yet profoundly ingrained into the Appalachian tradition” – this contemporary instrumental is a superb banjo and fiddle tune Holy Hive – Broom Formed by the drummer from the Dap Tones and inspired by being on tour with Lee Fields, this gentle soul, complete with tremolo guitar and horns, really floats Woods – Where Do You Go When You Dream A welcome return to form, this mellotron infused number is beautifully catchy Erland Cooper – Linga Holm Dramatic piano and strings from an altogether wild and wonderful album Mystery Jets – Screwdriver Loud / quiet dynamic, bombastic riffs, seething verses, the Jets turn it up to eleven to fight with love Jehnny Beth – Flower Another track where hushed verses give way to chorus explosions, serious tension and intensity Hinds – Good Bad Times Love that thudding bass drum, big stomping pop Norah Jones – Were You Watching? Smooth but haunting, with added Celtic flavour Braids – Young Buck Bleeps and bloops, melancholic poppy vocals, and the damnedest catchiest chorus Jessie Ware – What’s Your Pleasure? Is it getting hot in here? No further questions LA Priest – What Moves Quirky strutting electro, sleek yet squelchy SAULT – Wildfires + SAULT, Michael Kiwanuka – Bow Double billing because I couldn’t make a choice (plus when I realised the rhythms flow perfectly into one another it’s like it’s one song) Run The Jewels – a few words for the firing squad (radiation) Again, difficult to choose which track on this album; this is pure fire with sax and all GUM – The Thrill Of Doing It Right Turn this feel good banger up! Such a big hit when the horns drop at the start The Vacant Lots - Fracture Catchy, icy, synths (and Desert Sands label mates by the by) A.A. Williams – Melt Enchanting slow-burning, stirring post-rock, with a wonderful, soaring crescendo Lightning Orchestra – For Those Who Are Yet To Be Born A late discovery, but immediately catapulted to the top, self-described “psychedelic booty-shake” Kamaal Williams – Save Me Almost chose ‘Pigalle’ but the tight push drumming on this won out, hard funky jazz stylings of the Herbie variety Victoria Monét – Dive Lavish and groovy, and as Monét puts it: “They say most humans are about 60% water, but I believe women must be 69% so dive in baby." Secret Machines – Talos’ Corpse Genuinely so happy to see Brandon and Josh back and still with the big sounds All Them Witches – Enemy of My Enemy Relentlessly heavy, all the chops and described by one reviewer as the love child of TOOL, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Kyuss; I love this band Fenne Lily – Birthday Beautiful and bruised Mildlife – Automatic Another new discovery, in the pocket cosmic goodness and much as it pains me to quote from NME I can’t think of a better description than ‘Mobius strip funk’ Puscifer – Apocalyptical Maynard in the video for this track is an indelible image; massive swaggering Intruder-esque drums, angular menacing guitars, Carina’s ethereal edgy vocals, Maynard’s gritted teeth whispers, and apposite apocalyptical lyrics Matt Berninger – Loved So Little Confessional moody acoustic conjuring up Western-esque vistas Goldensuns – Denandra Moore Californian sun-drenched lo-fi groove, for fans of Conan Mockasin and Night Moves Frankie and the Witch Fingers – Cavehead F*cking excellent west coast garage psych melange and the B,D,E ascend at 3:10 is nod central King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – The Hungry Wolf Of Fate Genre bending brilliance once again from down under, this cut a heavy, doomy Sabbath assault King Hannah – Meal Deal Ominous drone opens into an acoustic tale of buying a flat with a spider in the bath, Hannah’s sinister smoky sultry vocals draw you in, before some menacing low frequency dirge guitar and drums kick in at 1:30… By this point on first listen I was already hooked, but then comes a great walloping Angel Olsen ‘Sister’ style crescendo, a glorious find at the end of the year (props to Manuel) HONOURABLE MENTIONS Elephant Stone – I See You Sam Lee, Elizabeth Frazer – The Moon Shines Bright Priscilla Ermel – Martim Pescador Rheinzand – Blind Dogleg – Fox The Flaming Lips, Deap Lips – Home Thru Hell The Heliocentrics – Hanging By A Thread Midwife – 2018 Chicano Batman – Color My life Trace Mountains – Rock & Roll Peach Pit – Shampoo Bottles Buscabulla – Vámono Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – Cars In Space Jess Williamson – Wind on Tin Thiago Nassif, Arto Lindsay – Plástico The Vacant Lots – Endless Rain Nubya Garcia – Stand With Each Other (Feat. BBC Radio 6Music Festival - Review - Camden (6th-8th March 2020)

It’s probably safe to say that not everybody who listens to 6 Music likes everything they play, but it’s almost certain that all the listeners are united in their unconditional love of 'proper' music. In that spirit, the offering at this year’s BBC Radio 6 Music festival is a veritable smorgasbord of musical genres, each artist contributing their own distinct flavour to the musical feast. Opening the festival, black midi meander between delicate fingerstyle melodies and thrashing, aggressively distorted guitar. They are chaotic and slightly unsettling, though hopefully not too brash so as to scare off the fans expecting to see Michael Kiwanuka later that night - this odd line-up juxtaposition testament to the versatility of 6 Music and its listeners. The band’s powerful vocals emanate from a largely static Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, while conversely, on the other side of the stage drummer Morgan Simpson goes to town on the drum kit whilst delivering a brilliantly tight and complex performance.

Nadine Shah, drafted in to fill a gap left by the laryngitis-stricken Michael Kiwanuka, has a soulful voice, and her music is slower, more sultry. The band’s sound is a somewhat exotic infusion of middle-Eastern influences in the sitar-like guitar riffs and complex drum patterns - Shah has talked about her father’s Pakistani heritage and its influence on her music. Thrilled to be on stage to kick off her 'residency' (she will also open the closing night of the festival on Sunday evening) she also sends her best to Michael Kiwanuka for a speedy recovery - have a lemsip on us, Mikey! The last artist in the Roundhouse on Friday night is the wonderful Brittany Howard; a vibrant and joyful soul singer set against a classic Americana backdrop. Howard’s amazing falsetto ad-libbing dazzles against the choral backing, much like her glittery shawl against the dusty orange backdrop. She holds her own as headliner in Michael Kiwanuka's absence with a more jubilant, celebratory sort of soul music; very much what the doctor ordered.

On Saturday in Dingwalls, Jordan Rakei delivers a startlingly raw set with record-perfect precision. Rakei's voice is used as an instrument, his beat-box like percussive breaths punctuating his silky smooth flows. The band too are tight, and super precise, but not lacking in flexibility. There are melodic similarities to the likes of Fat Freddy's Drop, hinting at Rakei’s New Zealand influence. One of Jordan’s guests on stage is the inimitable Loyle Carner with his signature hushed vocals and gentle swagger, together the duo perform their hit ‘Ottolenghi’, Carner’s appearance makes the crowd go wild and their performance doesn’t disappoint. Grammy-winning pianist Robert Glasper kicks off his set with a dazzling Radiohead cover, putting his own New-York-Jazz spin on their distinctly British sound. Glasper and his band create a rich narrative; sonic layers phasing in and out to guide the listeners along on a musical journey. Together their sound is expansive, with plenty of jazzy improvisation thrown in for good measure.

Later that night in the Roundhouse Sackler Space The Orielles take to the stage. They look like they're straight out of a 70's music video, striped sweaters and flared jeans a plenty. Lovely crunchy bass and swimmy vocals abound in a performance that resembles a pick’n’mix of musical styles with cascading 80s synths, grungy 90s rock and everything between. The erratic and disjointed 'Rapid Eye' paints a vivid dream sequence with shimmering guitar and quirky percussion, toy-like laser sounds adding to the quasi-nostalgic feel of the band. The Big Moon start their set with a live radio broadcast on 6 Music, with a little help from DJ Tom Robinson, who warms up the crowd and introduces the band. Again, this is genre bending music, much like the Orielles but more fluid. Juliette Jackson’s husky vibrato vocals float over the band’s rolling rhythms whilst punchy synths create a dynamic, spacey atmosphere. All four of the women have amazing voices and they make full use of their abilities with some delightful, uplifting harmonies. 

On Sunday, again in Dingwalls, Ghostpoet delivers an electrifying performance - his body is an extension of the music as he twists and flows with the melody. Dark and twisted, his sound borrows from a diverse catalogue of influence, from heavy metal to trip-hop. He also debuts a new song ‘Nowhere to Hide' - a song that builds on an escalating tension, pierced violently by eery, cinematic strings. It is a powerfully intimate performance that goes hand-in-hand with the intensity of his music. Not long after, The Hot 8 Brass Band, the textbook example of creating joy through music, give a jubilant performance that gets everyone moving. In a double-whammy shout-out they perform an Amy Winehouse cover to celebrate the late artist’s life in her old stomping ground of Camden whilst also celebrating international women’s day. This performance is a treat, the bright and bold brass lifting the spirits of the crowd.

Closing the festival in the Electric Ballroom are the indie stalwarts Bombay Bicycle Club; the masters of turning quotidien melancholy into excitable, upbeat anthems. Having returned from a 5-year hiatus to release their 5th studio album in January this year, the band have been gigging non-stop, though evidently this hasn’t tired them out. Their performance is gentle at first, but builds to a fever pitch as they turn to their older tunes; bound to put smiles on the faces of the thinning-haired indie kids amongst the crowd. The snarling bass-solo in ‘Overdone’ sets the ballroom alight, and the vibrant, fruity melodies of ‘Luna’ get the room dancing. The festival draws to a close, but 6 Music very much lives on - and as well as continuing to serve up musical cocktails to its loyal listeners, fans will be able to listen back to recordings from the festival on the BBC sounds app. All photos by Rob Waters. 20 for ’20: #16 U.S. Girls - "Heavy Light" (4AD)

Their previous album, “In a Poem Unlimited”, is for my money U.S. Girls’ masterpiece, our Album of the Year for 2018 and undoubtedly one of the ‘10s best. “Heavy Light” may not surpass it but it certainly comes close, with Meg Remy continuing to successfully mix infectious soul and jazz influences into her experimental pop formula, concocting a truly potent aural elixir.
