And the Tony Award Goes to...
Six-Time Tony Winner Audra McDonald, reigning Queen of Broadway
In honor of the Tony nomination announcement today, it's about time I published this post I've had waiting for almost two months now. With 64 Divas in our tournament, they're practically drowning in Tonys. Collectively, 53 Divas have received one or more nominations across four eligible acting categories, and 31 have taken home the prize. And you'll never believe what tumblr's image limit is. 30.
As luck would have it, two Divas won Tonys in the same year and despite what might be the most dramatic height difference possible, Bebe Neuwirth and Janet McTeer were photographed together specifically so I could make this post work 27 years later. (Bebe in heels and Janet in flats, and still...)
Pictured (L to R): Andrea Martin (2013), Anika Noni Rose (2004), Bebe Neuwirth and Janet McTeer (1997)

Reading This Week 2024 #21
As I am still getting into the swing of making these posts regularly again, its coming a little bit late! I've been pretty absorbed in trying to finish a crochet project, so reading has often been a little secondary unless I've got a good audiobook to go with it
Finished:
Tomie by Junji Ito, translated by Naomi Kokubo read for the sake of getting to read along with Shelved by Genre, and I blasted through it before they announced the pace they would be reading it, whoops. Lots of domestic violence, stalker, and abuse imagery along with the body horror. I think it's kinda lacking in terms of a conclusion, but it did give me a nightmare because the rules of how the horror worked were established but also flexible enough that my sleeping mind could construct its own Tomie scenario, so I think that makes it a successful piece of horror
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers, audiobook narrated by Rachel Dulude read for an upcoming sff bookclub meeting. to me this reads like a novel version of a clssic episodic scifi show like some sort of Farscape, and while that was charming, i think it suffered from not having as many episodes as a television show would have to develop its characters. the characters of Corbyn and Ohann I think were just handled poorly in general (more could have been done to give either of their arcs more weight), but also i loved the lizard aliens in this!
Lumberjanes, Vol. 1: Beware the Kitten Holy written by ND Stevenson, Grace Ellis, & Shannon Waters and illustrated by Brooklyn Allen read for upcoming June queer lit bookclub. this was kinda nostalgic for me because my dad got me these comics as they were coming out, but i never really read them that much! fun and charming, tho now more than ever I side with Jen.
Started/Ongoing:
The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu I am reading this collection of short stories on recommendation from a friend! I started reading slow but now I'm trying a method of alternating between crocheting a round and reading a story and that is going very well! Of what I've read so far, I absolutely adore State Change, The Regular was very suspenseful, and the title story The Paper Menagerie made me cry! Also my audiobook hold at the library has come in so I may also read using that
The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, audiobook narrated by Jayne Entwistle so a kid I'm friends with was telling me about books she thought were good and out of respect for her I'm trying the first couple chapters of all of them even though I'm out of their target age demographic (can you hear my bones creaking as I try not to be a snob?). 2 chapters in, I'm not quite sure how i feel/if I'm compelled enough to keep on reading, but if there's a middle schooler in your life who likes historical fiction this might be worth checking out!
Reading Plans: since the last update, I have put together an organized list of books and other reading to do for my thesis this summer! here's hoping I follow through As i mentioned above, a kid I'm friends with gave me some book recommendations that I'll be checking out because my library has audiobooks for all of them! I've also got some other recommendations from friends on hold at the library, and some other random holds on Libby coming in that i need to check out. other than that I'm going to try and finish the Ken Liu short story collection this week and

Love a good pin-up and Peter Gowland who shot the Blue album cover was famous for his “Gowland Girls” glamour shots. My fave here is Jane Mansfield, hence she’s in Rivers’ position🥰

Dan Stevens & audiobooks
Many of you will already know that Dan has narrated, or rather performed, more than 30 audiobooks as well as numerous and varied radio dramas & readings.
However, many do not know or realise what a masterful grasp he has on languages, dialects, accents and the ages of the characters, whether they be man or woman, boy or girl.
I am listening, again, to “Fall of Giants” by Ken Follett which has one of the broadest range of characters, each one of which is amazingly “inhabited” by Dan.
Below is a very long list of characters in that book - and remember each is portrayed differently by Dan which makes it such an enjoyable “listen”. It is an amazing performance and I truly hope that one day he will find some time to provide us with more audiobooks to enjoy.
Those who already enjoy these works will need no convincing, and they will have many favourites, as do I, especially work such “My Dear I Wanted To Tell You”, “The Invisible Ones”, “History of A Pleasure Seeker”, “Wolf Hall”, “War Horse”.......and more

Toby Stephens and Luke Arnold on Black Sails Season Two
“Black Sails” returns for its second season on Starz on Saturday, January 24. Picking up right where the first season left off, Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and John Silver (Luke Arnold) are stranded with their crew on an island. I’ve seen the first two new episodes and got to speak with Arnold and Stephens when they were at the Television Critics Association winter press tour.
Some light spoilers for season two follow, as it entails Flint and Silver boarding another ship, battling with other boats in their quest for gold. The action is only going to get bigger, the actors say, but we’ll never quite know whether to trust Flint or Silver, names you’ll also recognize from Treasure Island.
ComingSoon.net: Are Flint and Silver pretty inseparable now?
Toby Stephens: Yeah.
Luke Arnold: Yeah, we do. Season one, we had little bits to do with each other, but especially second season, we got to spend a lot of time together and luckily we don’t hate each other.
Stephens: You were sick of me by the end of the season.
Arnold: No, it’s been pretty nice. It is one of the great things in the show for me is to work with this guy.
Stephens: Mine as well.
Arnold: A big highlight of the season.
Stephens: It’s a lot of fun, because they’re such a mismatch. It’s a great relationship between the two of them stuck together. Circumstances have thrown them together. They don’t trust one another, they don’t like one another and yet they need one another. That’s kind of a cool dynamic.
CS: Is there less duplicity now that both of their agendas are right out in the open?
Arnold: It definitely begins that way. Without saying too much, I think that’s where they start. They’re very much on the same page. They go, “Well, we both want the same thing so let’s team up.” But I think their alliance is very dependent on that remaining true or remaining the same as the season goes on. So yeah, I think it constantly changes. From moment to moment they can be honest with each other and then you see maybe one of them. They’re never sure who’s going to cross whom.
Stephens: It’s also trying to work out what the other one’s bigger game is, because they’re both people who think ten steps ahead of the next person. It’s the reason that they kind of actually are similar. They’re chess players, but it’s trying to work out where are your ten steps ahead compared to where my ten steps ahead are. They’re both trying to figure out, okay, when you get this gold, what are you going to do with the gold? Do you really intend to get the gold? Where are we going with this? So they’re constantly trying to second guess each other. It’s not that they’re lying to one another. It’s just that we’re very economic with the truth.
Arnold: And it’s quite strange because Silver knows as much as anyone, if not more so, what this man is capable of and what happens to the men who are close to him. So he knows he has to be on his guard the whole time because he was in the room when Gates got choked out. So he’s very aware not to put too much trust in this man’s world.
CS: Do you catch up at all to Treasure Island this season?
Arnold: I think the shadows of Treasure Island start to hang over “Black Sails” much more in this series, which to me is my favorite thing about it. Plotting that chart for Silver between this young kid we see at the beginning of season one and the man we know he has to become. That’s both with Flint as well. You only hear about Flint in the book. Definitely the ghost of him is so strong.
Stephens: There are more references to the book, but what’s great is that it doesn’t become tied down by it as well. I was saying earlier, it’s like Robert Louis Stevenson saw “Treasure Island” from this vantage. We’re looking at it from this vantage. So it’s the same story, they’re the same characters but perceived in a totally different way. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote it in this kind of romanticized children’s almost naive point of view. We’re looking at it from a very 21st century adult way. It’s the same kind of thing but from a different angle.
CS: Speaking of literature, did you have a preference for Captain Flint or Rochester in Jayne Eyre?
Stephens: That’s really hard to say because they’re such different characters. Rochester is a literary archetype. He really is. I was very nervous when I played him because it was like am I going to be able to do Rochester right for all of these women out there who are totally obsessed by this character in fiction? But it was a very satisfying part to play and I loved doing it. In a way, Flint, we’re creating a character totally because he’s not in “Treasure Island.” He’s talked about. He’s referred to. We don’t know who this guy is so I’m starting afresh with the writers. That’s what’s really cool is creating this character. I’m not trying to avoid the question. It’s just really hard to compare the two because they’re satisfying in totally different ways. I would say they’re equally satisfying.
CS: How is the fencing training going?
Arnold: Training kind of adapts as we go. It really kicked off with our boot camp and got our basic sword skills under our belt. After that point, much more happens really fight by fight. There isn’t a time. Unfortunately there isn’t the time to keep getting us in the stunt room just for general training. We are in the gym pretty much every day but the fight training really comes a month or however long we can before the scene.
Stephens: Getting you in, choreographing the fight so that on the day… The problem was at the end of last season, the schedule got so constant that there was no time. There was absolutely no time, and it ends with this epic sequence which I won’t get into, but it’s a really epic sequence at the end of the season with loads of various fights with me and Zach McGowan fighting…
Arnold: Don’t say too much, man, come on.
Stephens: I’m not, and we had no time, so it was kind of like on the day, okay, this happens, this happens, then you do this and then we go to that. It’s all a bit last minute but that was kind of fun. It kind of added an edge to it that perhaps wouldn’t have been there.
Arnold: Like everything, it always happens in shooting. You’d always love more time with the training and preparation, but once the wheels start turning, that rehearsal and training time starts to disappear.
CS: The season starts out with a big naval battle, so does the pace keep up action-wise?
Arnold: Absolutely. There was plenty of action in season one but that is dwarfed time and time again in season two. While it is still the focus of “Black Sails” being a character-driven drama, there is so much action in the second season and the scale of it just gets bigger and bigger. If people want a bit more action, you definitely get it served up in the second season.
Stephens: The thing is, you’ve got to ration out. If you just have sea battle after sea battle, it’s boring. It’s like oh, another sea battle, they blow the sh*t out of each other, there’s a load of cannons coming. But there are all kinds of different action sequences that you can have within the context of this show. So it’s not necessarily just about ships. And I love the fact that we go back to London 15 years before. We reveal this whole other kind of world. Really, the kind of center of that world because that’s where it all comes from. All of the power comes from England. The reason that they’re there comes from England, so it’s cool that that takes us there and that opens up a whole other world for us.
Arnold: What I love about the first episode, and it’s where the writers are getting inventive in a great way is that we see a ship takeover in a completely different way, your and my little mission. There’s a really inventive, interesting, tense way to take over a ship rather than blasting it with cannons and throwing the hooks over and doing that thing. I think lots more of that where we start to see pirate action in not the cliche way you’ve come to expect.
CS: You’ve already got a third season.
Arnold: We’re in the middle of it.
CS: This whole time have you shot seasons back to back?
Stephens: We have a five month hiatus between where they have to write them. They start writing them.
Arnold: And also because the visual effects are so huge, that’s why we have to be over a year ahead. Even though we’re shooting season three now, they’ve only just put finishing touches on the end of season two ready to air. The post-production is so massive we have to be ahead of the game.
CS: What are Flint’s and Silver’s most redeeming qualities?
Arnold: I think Silver’s honesty about his intentions. I think even though he can be so duplicitous and can lie and has the gift of the gab, he’s also really able to just say, “Don’t trust me. Don’t rely on me for anything more than what I’m telling you. I’m only teaming up with you because we both want this. As soon as we get it, I’ll see you later.” And I think that clarity of his intentions is actually a really redeeming feature.
Stephens: I think Flint is that he’s brilliant at what he does. He’s an incredibly good seaman. As we find out, he was in the Navy so he’s properly trained. He is a really good captain and generally his decision making is sound. It’s just that it isn’t particularly perhaps the choices that his crew would want him to make. But his judgment is very, very good and rational. I think that’s his saving grace.

INDEPENDENT PROJECT CRIT REPORT
TITLE- ‘Collision’
GROUP 6
DIRECTORS- Jack Birrell, Jenny Morrison, Katie- Jayne Ward, James Stevenson and Peer Theilen
DoP- Jack Birrell, Jenny Morrison, Katie- Jayne Ward, James Stevenson and Peer Theilen
EDITORS- James Stevenson and Jenny Morrison
SOUND DESIGN BY- Peer Theilen and Jenny Morrison
The first steps of coming up with our idea was quite quick. We got on a call and Katie-Jayne came up with this idea of using paint as a means to express emotions. We all got on board with this idea and began to brainstorm ideas and begin our research. We had several group calls to talk about what type of narrative we would go for with the research we had found on short films handling paint. The group decided that we focus mainly on painting the face of people as we could use a persons’ face to express what we wanted while being accompanied by the paint.
There were several clips that we found on YouTube and through our lecturers that explored our idea which helped us begin to realize the potential of the paint and opened up our minds to more abstract and expressive forms of representing our idea.
Here are some research clips:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jRDQ_E72e4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvCCJyIodFE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYwAzLlUbV8&t=47s
After a few calls we came to the conclusion that we all wanted to film so we split the film into five, 24 seconds, sections so each of us could direct our own segment. This is where I came up with the idea of having a car crash theme to it to insert a solid narrative. We would stay with the painting and only represent the car crash narrative with sound as we all wanted to explore and try out some sound editing as we couldn’t in the last project. We assigned each member of the group to handle a section of the crash, I had the start section with the person casually driving and signing along unaware of the danger that lies ahead in the other sections.
Here are some concept art and storyboards for my section:
With our individual sections we would go off and film them separately and then come together once they were all done to make the two-minute film we were tasked to make. This process was extremely fun to do as it gave all of us complete freedom with our segments and could make the abstractness of our idea come to light. With our sections we would edit the footage we got together ourselves to give us all a chance to try out some editing and make it easier for Jenny, James and myself to complete the full length edit. This way of editing was extremely efficient as when it came to the final editing process there wasn’t loads of shot clips that had to be editing together but instead only five segments that had to be pieced together. With the full edit done James sent it off to Jenny and Peer to do the sound editing for it. Both went to Screen Academy and with the sounds each of us had found for our bits managed to piece together a creepy yet strong sound design.
The feedback we got from our crit was mainly positive. People once watching it came away with different interpretations of it which is exactly what we wanted and proves our abstract approach was a success. Some areas we were told we should work on was to make the sound in the first part of the film sync better to what was going on screen so the narrative could flow better. With our film being so abstract everything relied on the sound, and we were told we could have explored a little more with it and introduced some more sounds to it like distorted voices or crying just to add to the drama of the narrative. We were also told by a few members of the class that our narrative was a little too broad and I feel that resonates from the abstractness of our project. We were also told that the second half of the film was the strongest as the sound linked well and helped to create a solid narrative due to the sound being stronger and more precise in the final sections. Additionally, we had a conversation about the placement of our title. As a group we decided to put it at the end so it wouldn't give the story away however in our crit we were told that we might have faired better if it was at the start as the title ‘Collision’ gives the audience part of a narrative before the film has even begun.
As a group we all worked amazingly well with each other even with all of us being in different locations due to Covid. Each member of the group successfully managed to create a section which stood out as they introduced their own creativity to the scene which was our main outcome when starting this project. I’ve learned throughout this project the importance of sound in displaying and telling a narrative and have also learned some basic editing due to my work on editing together my section. Overall, this project has been great fun to do as I’ve never really explored film in an abstract way as before doing this project I hated abstract films but after doing this have come to realize it opens up so many horizons of creativity.
