スパイク・ジョーンズが監督したPharcydeのDropのMV。Pharcydeは、1989年にロサンゼルスで結成されたImani、Slimkid3、Bootie Brown、およびFatlipの4人で結成されたヒップホップクルー。 Jay Dee（J Dilla）がプロデュースした彼らの2ndアルバム「Labcabincalifornia」からのセカンドカット「Runnin'」のB面曲としでリリースされたのがこの「Drop」。”mmm..... drop”の部分はBeastie Boysの「The New Style」にてサンプリングされていて、ビデオにはAd RockとMike Dがカメオ出演している。そして、最後のシーンに出てくるアートワークはマーク・ゴンザレスという、2度ならぬ3度くらい美味しいビデオ。ヒップホップMCの特徴的な動きを逆再生というアイデアで撮り切ったスパイクジョーンズは天才的出し、低予算でもアイデア一発でユニークな映像を成立させる彼のアイデアには、さすが、90年代におけるMV隆盛の立役者だなと今でも感じずにはいられない。本来のクリエイションの楽しさを思い出させてくれる思春期に見てたらヤバかったシリーズの一つ。

The music video for the Pharcyde "Drop" was directed by Spike Jones. The Pharcyde is an American alternative hip hop group, formed in 1989, from South Central Los Angeles. The original four members of the group are Imani (Emandu Wilcox), Slimkid3 (Trevant Hardson), Bootie Brown (Romye Robinson), and Fatlip (Derrick Stewart). "Drop" was released as their B-Side track of “Runnin’” from their second album “Labcabincalifornia” produced by Jay Dee（J Dilla）.The famous "mmm...drop" line from the song was sampled in The Beastie Boys' "The New Style" and Ad Rock and Mike D from the Beastie Boys was doing a cameo in this video. And also, the end of the video features art from professional skateboarder/artist Mark Gonzales. This video makes us knock three (not two) birds out with one stone. I believe this Spike Jones’s idea is genius because he found hip hop MCs’ moving is very unique and it’s epic if he replayed their moving backwards. Owing to his one genius idea, there is no need to spend the budget and I believe he must be a superstar for golden era of music videos in the '90s. This video is one of the works I shouldn’t watch when I was in adolescence.(because I must got influenced too much!)
