Round up of my wild week 15th-19th May 2023
Unusually since I started doing these posts this post doesn’t include any weekend days, following the set up of last weekend for me meaning I did the post on Sunday evening for the first time and the possible set up of this weekend for me meaning I likely won’t have a chance to do it tomorrow or Sunday I thought I would do one tonight. And this week was quite a notable working week of wildlife watching moments squeezed in to look back on.
The pinnacle of the week of course was that exhilarating moment on a look at Winnall Moors on an office day yesterday lunch time where I heard and saw a Garden Warbler, an enchanting and thrilling species to see at any time. And my first of the species seen since 2018 taking my year list to the magical 200. I heard Sedge Warbler nicely there too which on its own as one of my favourite birds is quite a big lunch time moment. On Lakeside walks this week the big thing was seeing one Great Crested Grebe pair firmly and consistently on the nest, bringing great hope of adorable humbug chicks. My fingers are crossed. Wonderful views of Whitethroat and hearing them well, swirling Swifts and Swallows, Mallards and both species of geese with great views of their growing and gorgeous young and Moorhen were other great birds seen at Lakeside this week. Wren, Jackdaw and Jay were birds I had a good week for, with Grey Heron seen on the way to Winchester yesterday. It was notable to see birds before reaching Lakeside on lunch time walks early in the week, a great Lesser Black-backed Gull view and beautiful views of two roving Red Kites on Tuesday seeing them at Lakeside too.

Onto butterflies and moths where I had a very exciting week on Lakeside walks. Twice seeing warm looking Small Heath flutter across the grass early in the week and a Common Blue today were two valuable year ticks. Holly Blue was perhaps the star of the week with very exciting and invigorating views of them along the northern path. Green-veined White, Speckled Wood and Peacock were other highlights across the week. I saw a few nice little moths at Lakeside this week, and today I saw my headline moth of the week one I love seeing a Silver Y seen on my earliest date in a year which was lovely, my fourth identified moth species of the year.

The Silver Y
It was a really good week for other insects for me, with my delve into damselflies really continuing with a great view of Azure Damselfly on Monday, a wonderful species and Blue-tailed Damselfly seen today and some others across the week seen flying. I also was very fascinated to find beetles with a lot of time spent looking for things in the pleasingly ever growing grass of Lakeside and some Bishop's Mitre Shieldbugs that appeared to be mating which was a really fun moment. A gant was interesting to see at home this week with crane flies enjoyed at Lakeside.

It was a fabulous week of flowers again, with ragged robin at Winnall Moors and dog roses, yellow rattle and water dropwort at Lakeside good new ones for the year this week. White clover, broad-leaved clover, vetch, oxeye daisies, cow parsley, buttercups, hawksbeard, cuckooflower, forget-me-not, wood avens, herb-Robert, yellow iris and medick were other highlights. It was great to enjoy lunch time walks and other time on some lovely days and take in beautiful green and sweet blossom adorned landscapes.

Favorite Bird Shots of October '24
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (female). An unusual visitor to my backyard as they only pass through in the spring and fall. I saw a juvenile male the next day. Yellow-billed Cuckoo Red-headed Woodpecker (juvenile) Red-bellied Woodpecker (looks like he’s holding a Chee-to, but I suppose it’s not). Wood Ducks (female) Pine Warbler Yellow-rumped Warbler Northern Flicker Red-Shouldered…

Fun fact: the issue w Maine's state bird is not that it's Northern Cardinal, it's that it is. Chickadee. Unspecified Chickadee Species. Which is typically meant to be Black-capped Chickadee, since they are on the license plate and are common bird-feeder visitors in Northern states.
But! I agree with Boreal Chickadee being the state bird! Maine is one of a few US states to get BOCH, and compared to how much of the state they could show up in, versus the other fragments of states, it would be a great state bird!
What do you think of this proposal? https://chng.it/LPG4gv8ZNJ
Tumblr media
I think it’s a nice idea, and I signed! I’m not from Maine, so I don’t have much of a personal connection, but i always feel like diversity in state birds is a win (How many of you really need the Northern Cardinal??)

My RtC wing au :D (originally posted on amino, if you recognize it)
Ocean - Starling
•Starlings are naturally invasive and considered annoying by many.
• This social expectation helped push Ocean into her perfectionism.
• The wings resemble an oil spill
• Despite contextual meanings, Ocean loves how her wings look
• A collective of starlings is called a “chattering” because they’re very social
Noel - Raven
Half hates his wings half loves them
• Pretty much the opposite of Ocean; Hates how they look, loves the implications
• Lots of people think of ravens negatively (creepy, dirty, tricky)
• Poetic meanings behind ravens make it worth it to Noel
• Enjoys flying (unlike Ocean) but will never do it in front of anyone
Misha - Osprey
• The only bird on the list not native to Canada (native to Ukraine, of course)
• Very expressive with his wings whether it’s intimidation or passion
• An Osprey being a type of hawk contributed to Mischa’s title of Angriest Boy in Town
• Mischa has the biggest wings out of the group
• A group of Ospreys are called a “duet”, which isn’t pertinent, but I find it fun since. choir
Ricky - Grey Catbird
• Couldn’t resist giving Ricky this one
• He can’t fly, but he can still move his wings and he’s even more expressive than Mischa
• There are all sorts of decorations woven into his feathers, he likes to tie things in or dye feathers when he has a moment
• When he uses his wheelchair, there are shields that protect his wings from the wheels
• During SABM he 100% comes out with them bedazzled
Penny - Chestnut Sided Warbler
•A songbird, of course (sponsored by Jane’s soprano self)
• Her brother’s wings aren’t the same as hers (Baird’s Sparrow), so when he mentioned he was jealous of the yellow in her wings she started dying his for him so they could match
• As Jane, her wings were shadows and she could fly without flapping them (freaking the others out, of course)
• Her wings jitter when she gets nervous or excited. A lot of time she keeps them close to her body except while flying
• She makes up little games to play while flying, dragging Ezra or the choir into them
Constance - Grey Jay
•Canada’s national bird
• Not bullied for her wings, but not complimented for them, it makes her envy other’s wings
• She wanted to dye her entire wings, but her parents only allowed her to dye the ends to match her hair
• Very affectionate with her wings, using them to brush against or hold people she cares about
• The Blackwoods have protective covers for when they work at the cafe, kind of like hairnets
-
Feel free to mention headcannons and such if you have any :D I’d love to hear your ideas
