MLB Draft 2023: Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews Could Be Taken 1-2

The top pick in this year’s Major League Baseball draft will probably come from Louisiana State’s College World Series-winning team. The only question seems to be which player will head to the Pittsburgh Pirates at No. 1, and which will go to the Washington Nationals at No. 2.Outfielder Dylan Crews, who won the Golden Spikes award thanks to his incredible blend of patience and power, was the first choice in FanGraphs’ mock draft, while Paul Skenes, a right-handed starting pitcher who averaged 15.3 strikeouts per nine innings and had a 1.69 E.R.A. last season, was first off the board in Keith Law’s mock draft for The Athletic.M.L.B.’s draft is far less predictable than drafts in other sports, so things could certainly change, but Crews and Skenes, both of whom are 21, have the opportunity to be the first teammates to be taken with the top two picks. Indians Wallop Twins 12-3 To Take Series.

Indians 12 Twins 3 W-Quantrill (6-3) L-Jax (3-4)

The Minnesota Twins split a doubleheader from the Cleveland Indians yesterday. The two teams squared off for the final time in 2021 this evening at Target Field. Another pitcher’s duel broke out as Cal Quantrill and Griffin Jax threw up zeroes for the first three innings tonight. The Indians bats awoke in the fourth when Jose Ramirez lined a one-out double to center. With two outs, Bobby Bradley hit a run-scoring double to put Cleveland on the board first. The Indians got back to work in the fifth as Austin Hedges reached on an infield single. Andres Gimenez reached on a fielder’s choice and Oscar Mercado belted a Griffin Jax slider out to left for a three-run homer. Myles Straw kept the inning moving with a double to left. He reached third on a groundout and scored on a Jose Ramirez sacrifice fly. This put the Indians up by five after five innings of play. The Indians kept adding on in the seventh. Myles Straw led-off with a single and Bradley Zimmer did the same. Jose Ramirez hit an RBI single to center and Franmil Reyes kept the chain moving with a single. Bobby Bradley smacked an Andrew Albers fastball out to left to cap off a five-run seventh for the Tribe. The Twins finally found some offense in the bottom of the seventh. Byron Buxton led-off with a walk and Max Kepler walked with two outs. Miguel Sano blasted a Cal Quantrill slider out to left for a three-run homer and the Twins were within seven. The Indians got a run back when the first two batters of the eighth walked. Myles Straw singled and a run scored on a double play. Franmil Reyes homered in the ninth to put the Tribe up 12-3. Blake Parker had a 1-2-3 ninth and the Indians picked up the series win tonight. 

-Final Thoughts- Griffin Jax was sailing through four innings then hit a wall in the fifth. He went 4 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Jovani Moran gave up four runs in 1 2/3 innings of work. Andrew Albers allowed three more runs over 2 2/3 innings and gave the bullpen the night off. Miguel Sano had two of the three hits for the team and knocked in three on his home run. The Twins hit 1-for-2 with runners in scoring position and left three men on base. Tomorrow is a much needed day off for the team. They will head to Toronto this weekend to play the Blue Jays. Michael Pineda will face Hyun-Jin Ryu in the series opener on Friday night.

2021-06-23 07:20:06 GMT+00:00 – Myles Straw homered and drove in two runs while starter Zack Greinke threw 7 1/3 strong innings as the visiting Houston Astros extended their winning streak to nine games with a 3-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday.

Houston now has won 13 of its last 15. This loss gave Baltimore a four-game losing streak.

Greinke (8-2) befuddled the struggling Orioles offense. He allowed one run on five hits, struck out four and walked one, remaining in control until leaving in the eighth.

Ryan Pressly closed it in the ninth and earned his 11th save this season.

Baltimore starter Jorge Lopez (2-9) threw 6 1/3 innings in his longest start this season. He allowed two runs on five hits and also struck out six with two walks.

Mariners 2, Rockies 1

Shed Long Jr. hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the eighth inning and Seattle defeated visiting Colorado.

It was the second consecutive game in which Long homered to win the game. He hit a grand slam in the 10th inning Sunday to give Seattle a 6-2 victory against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rockies tied it in the seventh on a two-out solo home run by C.J. Cron, his 10th homer of the season.

Padres 3, Dodgers 2

Jake Cronenworth and Ha-Seong Kim homered off Clayton Kershaw and host San Diego held on to defeat Los Angeles.

It was the sixth consecutive win for the Padres, who are 6-3 against the defending National League West champs this season. Padres starter Blake Snell (3-3), who entered the game with a 5.72 ERA, shut out the Dodgers for five innings to earn the win. He allowed four hits and three walks while striking out five.

Kershaw gave up three runs on four hits and two walks over six innings.

Giants 5, Angels 0

Anthony DeSclafani threw seven scoreless innings and got plenty of offensive support while leading San Francisco over Los Angeles.

The Giants had 12 hits, including home runs from Wilmer Flores and Mauricio Dubon. Brandon Crawford went 3-for-3 with a walk.

DeSclafani (8-2) allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out nine on the way to winning his fourth consecutive start. He has allowed just four runs (three earned) in 27 innings during those outings, good for a 1.00 ERA.

Red Sox 9, Rays 5 (11 innings)

Rafael Devers hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the 11th inning as visiting Boston spoiled the major league debut of Tampa Bay top prospect Wander Franco in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Franco, ranked as baseball’s No. 1 prospect by MLB.com, hit a three-run homer for his first hit and finished 2-for-4 for the Rays, who have lost seven straight.

Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run homer and RBI single, Devers finished with three RBIs and J.D. Martinez added two RBIs for Boston, which has won five of seven.

Athletics 13, Rangers 6

Matt Chapman homered and drove in three runs as Oakland jumped out to a big lead before recording a victory over host Texas in Arlington.

Ramon Laureano also went deep among his three hits, and former Ranger Elvis Andrus and Mark Canha had two-run singles as part of their three-hit performances. Oakland provided insurance as Sean Murphy’s two-run double highlighted a four-run ninth inning.

Eli White belted a two-out homer in the seventh inning and Joey Gallo went deep to lead off the eighth and trim Oakland’s lead to 9-6. Texas, however, was unable to draw closer and sustained its 20th loss in the last 24 games.

Tigers 8, Cardinals 2

Jonathan Schoop capped Detroit’s six-run fourth-inning outburst with a three-run homer and the host Tigers defeated St. Louis.

Schoop’s homer was his 14th this season and ninth this month. Jake Rogers had two extra-base hits and drove in three runs and Akil Baddoo contributed two hits and scored twice.

Detroit starter Tarik Skubal gave up two runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings. St. Louis starter Johan Oviedo (0-3) gave up six runs, two earned, on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. Paul DeJong reached base three times and scored a run, while Lars Nootbaar drove in a run in his major league debut.

Blue Jays 2, Marlins 1

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a go-ahead, run-scoring double in the top of the ninth inning, leading Toronto over host Miami.

Miami’s Sandy Alcantara struck out seven in eight innings, allowing five hits, one walk and one run. He threw 55 of his 86 pitches for strikes as he lasted at least eight innings for the fourth time in his past six starts. He has a stellar 1.80 ERA over his past seven starts, although his record is just 3-3 during that span.

Jays starter Ross Stripling allowed just two hits, one walk and one run in six innings, striking out seven. Jays MVP candidate Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Cubs 7, Indians 1

Kris Bryant, Willson Contreras and Patrick Wisdom homered as Chicago cruised to a win over visiting Cleveland.

Joc Pederson added a two-run double for the Cubs, who salvaged a split in the two-game series. Chicago’s seven-run outburst followed a string of nine straight games with three runs or fewer.

Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks (10-4) won his eighth consecutive start. He allowed no runs on four hits in six innings. Hendricks walked none and struck out five. Cleveland’s Eli Morgan (0-2) gave up four runs on four hits in five-plus innings. He walked none and struck out nine.

Nationals 3, Phillies 2

Yan Gomes singled twice and drove in two runs and Juan Soto added two hits and scored twice as Washington defeated host Philadelphia.

Nationals starter Max Scherzer (6-4) tossed five solid innings and allowed two hits and one run. Scherzer, who had been struggling with a groin injury, struck out eight and walked three.

Bryce Harper homered and singled while Rhys Hoskins homered and doubled for the Phillies. Manager Joe Girardi was ejected after a fifth-inning spat with Scherzer. Girardi asked the umpires to check Scherzer for a foreign substance and, after nothing was found, Girardi was ejected.

Royals 6, Yankees 5

Kansas City scored four runs in the eighth inning and Greg Holland survived a jam in the ninth as the Royals hung on for a victory over New York at Yankee Stadium.

By scratching out a rally against Jonathan Loaisiga (7-3), the Royals won for the second time in 34 games when trailing after seven innings.

Kansas City’s comeback occurred after the Yankees took a 3-2 lead when Wade scored on a wild pitch by Jake Brentz (2-0). Kyle Zimmer allowed a two-run homer to LeMahieu, and Scott Barlow stranded Aaron Judge at second in the eighth.

Pirates 6, White Sox 3

Erik Gonzalez and Bryan Reynolds each drove in two runs as Pittsburgh handed visiting Chicago its fifth straight loss.

Adam Frazier added a solo homer and walked and scored for the Pirates, who rode a four-run seventh inning to win for the third time in four games. Pittsburgh starter Tyler Anderson pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and five hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

Yasmani Grandal hit a pinch-hit three-run homer for the White Sox, whose losing streak is their longest of the season. Chicago starter Lucas Giolito, making his first start against the Pirates since no-hitting them Aug. 25, gave up two runs and four hits in six innings, with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Braves 3, Mets 0

Charlie Morton pitched seven scoreless innings and earned his 100th career win as visiting Atlanta blanked New York.

All of the Atlanta offense came from Dansby Swanson, who connected for a three-run homer off reliever Yennsy Diaz in the third inning. It was his 12th home run of the year.

Morton (7-3) allowed only one hit, a high chopper from pinch hitter Jerad Eickhoff with two outs in the fifth inning. Morton extended his scoreless streak to 14 2/3 innings. He walked two batters, hit two with pitches and struck out a season-high 11.

Brewers 5, Diamondbacks 0

Kolten Wong led off the game with a home run and Freddy Peralta tossed six strong innings as Milwaukee beat Arizona in Phoenix.

The Diamondbacks were held to two hits and lost for the 32nd time in their last 35 games. Arizona ended its franchise-record, 17-game losing streak with a 5-1 victory Monday in the series opener.

Peralta (7-2) allowed one hit and walked four while matching a season high with 10 strikeouts. Christian Yelich added a solo homer and Luis Urias drove in two runs for Milwaukee, which won for the third time in four games.

Reds 10, Twins 7

Tyler Naquin went 4-for-4, including a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the ninth, as Cincinnati snapped a five-game losing streak in a wild victory over Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Naquin drove a 2-1 fastball by Twins reliever Hansel Robles (3-4) 420 feet into the back of the bullpen in left-center for his 12th home run of the season. Tucker Barnhart went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs and Jesse Winker added a two-run double for Cincinnati.

Ryan Jeffers, Max Kepler and Trevor Larnach each homered and Nelson Cruz went 3-for-4 and was also hit by a pitch for Minnesota, which had its season-best five-game winning streak snapped.

This week’s NFL mock draft has 2 options for each team

Chase Young will be one of the first players taken in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The teams drafting in the first round have more than one choice — well, except for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Every NFL team does mock drafts, and it’s not just for fun. Teams do them to try to figure out their options. If a player they like is gone, backup possibilities are needed. That’s why the theme of this week’s mock draft is options.

In addition to each team’s pick in the first round, I’ve come up with a backup choice. The only catch is the options are only relative to what has happened in the draft. If a player was taken already, he can’t be the “other” option.

Here’s a look at how it all played out this week:

1. Cincinnati Bengals: Joe Burrow, QB, LSU

Except for a couple of days during the NFL Scouting Combine when Tua Tagovailoa was hinted at being the No. 1 pick, Burrow has been the choice since the middle of the college football season.

Other option: None. This is the only pick where there isn’t another feasible option.

2. Washington: Chase Young, DE, Ohio State

Young has been the expected second pick in the draft for months — with good reason, too. He’s similar as a prospect to Myles Garrett and Nick Bosa. Not only is he an instant starter, he’s an instant playmaker.

Other option: The talk about Washington taking Tagovailoa hasn’t fully gone away. The group that brought in Dwayne Haskins last year is gone, and new head coach Ron Rivera will have a lot of sway on draft night.

3. Detroit Lions: Jeff Okudah, CB, Ohio State

The Lions, as expected, traded Darius Slay. That makes what they should do with the third pick even more obvious.

Other option: Don’t forget, Lions head coach Matt Patricia has a philosophy of building from the middle out on defense, and his team has a need at defensive tackle. Derrick Brown of Auburn should be in the discussion for this pick.

4. New York Giants: Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville

Giants general manager Dave Gettleman, the madman, loves hog mollies. “Big men allow you to compete,” Gettleman once said while he was in Carolina. There is no hoggier molly in this draft than the 6’7, 364-pound Becton.

Other option: This could be any of the other top offensive tackles, like Tristan Wirfs of Iowa or Jedrick Wills of Alabama.

5. Miami Dolphins: Justin Herbert, QB, Oregon

This week’s mock isn’t projecting trades — trades will be back next week — but I do think the Chargers could jump ahead of the Dolphins for Tagovailoa. That could leave Herbert for Miami.

Other option: If the Dolphins don’t get Tagovailoa, they could punt on quarterback until 2021 and wait for Ohio State’s Justin Fields or Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence. If that happens, Clemson defender Isaiah Simmons would be fun in Brian Flores’ defense.

6. Los Angeles Chargers: Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama

Although there is some risk in taking Tagovailoa, it makes sense for the Chargers. With the departure of Philip Rivers, they need a new starting quarterback. They also need some star power, and the former national title winner has it.

Other option: While the Chargers signed Bryan Bulaga and traded for Trai Turner, they could still use one more piece on the offensive line. Wirfs is a player the Chargers have spoken to leading up to the draft, and he would fit nicely on the right side.

7. Carolina Panthers: Derrick Brown, DT, Auburn

Even with Simmons available, this has become my default pick for the Panthers. Defensive lineman Kawann Short still has a few good years left, but if the Panthers can’t get someone to take the attention away from him, those years will be wasted.

Other option: Simmons is the obvious other option here. He is the only player in this draft anywhere near being able to fill the massive hole left by Luke Kuechly.

8. Arizona Cardinals: Tristan Wirfs, OT, Iowa

The Cardinals can continue building out their offense with a plug-and-play right tackle like Wirfs. He would bookend with D.J. Humphries and give Kyler Murray time to complete throws to his impressive group of receivers.

Other option: If not Wirfs, then it could be Wills. Getting a right tackle has to be the biggest priority for the Cardinals for the remainder of this offseason.

9. Jacksonville Jaguars: Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson

Finally, at long last, Simmons comes off the board. It’s a little challenging to believe he’ll drop this far, but this should absolutely be his draft floor. For the Jaguars, he would provide some playmaking ability to a defense that has lost numerous pieces the last couple of years.

Other option: If the Jaguars are skeptical about Cam Robinson at left tackle, they could give Andrew Thomas of Georgia a long look.

10. Cleveland Browns: Andrew Thomas, OT, Georgia

Although Wills is rated higher than Thomas, the Browns could use a few sure things. Moving Wills from the right to left side is a projection. With Thomas, they know they’re getting a left tackle.

Other option: If Becton and Wirfs are gone — both excellent fits in Kevin Stefanski’s zone-based offense — the Browns could trade down. Remember, new GM Andrew Berry was around the last time the Browns accumulated picks to build their franchise. It could happen again, potentially with Boise State tackle Ezra Cleveland being the target.

11. New York Jets: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama

George Fant is in the fold, on an absurdly large contract, but the Jets still need to get better on the offensive line. It’s just as conceivable that Wills goes in the top five as it is he drops to No. 11.

Other option: Wide receiver is the other obvious first-round pick for the Jets. Pick your favorite from Jerry Jeudy, CeeDee Lamb, or Henry Ruggs III. All will be in the discussion.

12. Las Vegas Raiders: CeeDee Lamb, WR, Oklahoma

Raiders general manager Mike Mayock has hinted numerous times this offseason that the Raiders will be after a wide receiver in the draft. Even though they brought in Nelson Agholor this offseason, he’s not a true No. 1 option. Lamb, with his impressive skillset, is that type of player.

Other option: This is wild, but Utah State quarterback Jordan Love could get consideration here. There’s a reason the Derek Carr trade talk has lingered since Jon Gruden came back.

13. San Francisco 49ers (via Indianapolis Colts): Henry Ruggs III, WR, Alabama

Deebo Samuel is going to be a star for the 49ers, but they still need more help at wide receiver. Ruggs is the type of deep threat the 49ers don’t have because Dante Pettis has been such a huge disappointment.

Other option: Last week’s mock draft had Florida cornerback CJ Henderson in this spot, and that could still be a possibility.

14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Javon Kinlaw, DT, South Carolina

If the top four offensive tackles are gone, the Buccaneers could draft whomever they view as the best player available. In this mock draft, it is Kinlaw. The Bucs have plenty of run stuff prowess on the defensive line with Ndamukong Suh and Vita Vea, but they don’t have a player who can get after the quarterback. Kinlaw can be that player.

Other option: Buccaneers GM Jason Licht will occasionally do weird things in the draft, like trade up in the second round to take a kicker. The weird thing here would be reaching on the fifth offensive tackle, be that Austin Jackson of USC or Josh Jones of Houston.

15. Denver Broncos: Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama

For my money, Jeudy is top wide receiver in the draft. It just so happens, at this very moment, there seems to be more buzz about Lamb and Ruggs. Jeudry is an excellent route runner with good hands. Those two attributes make people forget how fast he is on the field.

Other option: The Broncos traded for A.J. Bouye and Bryce Callahan is fine in the slot, but the Broncos need a second outside cornerback. Henderson could get the nod if the top three wide receivers are gone.

16. Atlanta Falcons: CJ Henderson, CB, Florida

Surprise, it’s not a pass rusher for the Falcons. After releasing Desmond Trufant, the Falcons are dangerously thin at cornerback. Damontae Kazee is good, but he’s more of a slot corner/safety hybrid. Henderson would give the Falcons a lockdown outside cornerback.

Other option: This pick could be an edge player, like LSU’s K’Lavon Chaisson or Penn State’s Yetur Gross-Matos.

17. Dallas Cowboys: K’Lavon Chaisson, Edge, LSU

Henderson would probably be the preference for the Cowboys to help replace Byron Jones, but they still need pass rush help. Even though Chaisson is a bit of a one-trick player as a pass rusher, he fits well in new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan’s defense.

Other option: The Cowboys could reach for a cornerback, because now they need one. Utah’s Jaylon Johnson is a fit, as is Kristian Fulton of LSU.

18. Miami Dolphins (via Pittsburgh Steelers): Josh Jones, OT, Houston

Miami’s offensive line needs plenty of help. If the Dolphins get a quarterback in this draft, the blocking has to get better. Jones started four years in college and should be able to step into the starting lineup as a rookie.

Other option: If the Dolphins don’t like Jones, Austin Jackson of USC or Isaiah Wilson of Georgia could be in play.

19. Las Vegas Raiders (via Chicago Bears): Yetur Gross-Matos, Edge, Penn State

The Raiders have stocked up on pass rushers the last two seasons, with draft picks Maxx Crosby and Clelin Ferrell and free agent addition Carl Nassib. Still, they could use a versatile defender who can get to the quarterback. Gross-Matos can play on the edge or standing up.

Other option: The Raiders let safety Karl Joseph leave this offseason and now need a player opposite Johnathan Abram. Either Grant Delpit of LSU or Xavier McKinney of Alabama would fit.

20. Jacksonville Jaguars: (via Los Angeles Rams): Justin Jefferson, WR, LSU

With new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, the Jaguars need a wide receiver who is a disciplined route runner. In this range of the first round, that player is Jefferson.

Other option: If the Jaguars prefer a jump-ball target at wide receiver, Clemson’s Tee Higgins should be around.

21. Philadelphia Eagles: Laviska Shenault Jr., WR, Colorado

The Eagles brought in Slay to bolster their cornerback group, squarely making wide receiver their biggest first-round need. Coming into last college football season, Shenault was considered by many as the top wide receiver prospect in the nation.

Other option: This could be the landing spot for Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims, this year’s “draft process” superstar.

22. Minnesota Vikings (via Buffalo Bills): Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU

Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs would be the perfect fit in Mike Zimmer’s defense. He’s a long, physical cornerback with coachable traits. However, it would be a little awkward:

Instead, the Vikings could fill a big roster hole with Fulton. He’s not as physically imposing as Diggs, but he knows how to play press coverage well.

Other option: After trading Stefon Diggs, the Vikings need help at wide receiver to keep the double teams away from Adam Thielen. In this scenario, that player would be Higgins or Mims.

23. New England Patriots: Jordan Love, QB, Utah State

I can’t quit this pick for the Patriots. It’s a huge gamble because Love had a down 2019 season, but the Patriots are resetting at quarterback.

Other option: The Patriots badly need speed at wide receiver. They could also use a big target. Could those two things combined lead them to Notre Dame wide receiver Chase Claypool? If so, it should be after a trade down. But the 6’4, 240-pound receiver has momentum from his 4.42 40-yard dash at the combine.

24. New Orleans Saints: Grant Delpit, S, LSU

After signing Emmanuel Sanders to be the team’s No. 2 wide receiver, the Saints might not have a high priority at the position. The team has few holes, but one of them is a deep coverage player. Delpit has shown that to be his specialty.

Other option: On the defensive line for New Orleans, interior pass rusher Sheldon Rankins is a free agent next year. So is backup defensive end Trey Hendrickson. If he’s available, Iowa defensive end A.J. Epenesa might get a long look.

25. Minnesota Vikings: Denzel Mims, WR, Baylor

Try and think, off the top of your head, the wide receivers on Minnesota’s roster besides Thielen. It’s not easy. The answer to that is Chad Beebe, Olabisi Johnson and Tajae Sharpe. Not good.

Other option: Arizona State wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk would be an interesting fit on Minnesota’s offense with his ability after the catch.

26. Miami Dolphins (via Houston Texans): Xavier McKinney, S, Alabama

This is a repeat pick for the Dolphins from last week. After quarterback and offensive tackle, there’s a real argument for Miami’s third-biggest need between a defensive lineman, safety, and running back. In this mock draft, McKinney is the best player available at those three spots.

Other option: If there is a team that could take a running back in the first round, it is Miami. The positional value is questionable, but if the Dolphins do it, Georgia’s D’Andre Swift should be the first running back off the board.

27. Seattle Seahawks: Isaiah Wilson, OT, Georgia

The first wave of free agency is well over at this point, and the Seahawks are still in need of a right tackle. Previous right tackle Germain Ifedi recently signed with the Bears. Wilson is a big, hulking right tackle brimming with potential. In other words, he’s a younger version of Ifedi.

Other option: Trading down should honestly be the first option for Seattle.

28. Baltimore Ravens: Patrick Queen, LB, LSU

The linebacker position for the Ravens is in a state of disrepair. Queen may not be the second coming of Ray Lewis, but he would give Baltimore’s defense an athletic linebacker who can find the ball in a hurry.

Other option: Oklahoma linebacker Kenneth Murray will probably get a look here as well. Really, it would be a coin toss scenario between the two.

29. Tennessee Titans: Austin Jackson, OT, USC

With Jack Conklin off to Cleveland, the Titans have a big hole at right tackle. For a team that relies on the running back more than most, maintaining the offensive line is critical. Although Jackson is more of a left tackle, he could be forced to move to the right in the NFL out of necessity.

Other option: The Titans still need to bring in a decent pass rusher, especially considering Vic Beasley was only signed on a one-year deal. Alabama edge rusher Terrell Lewis is a risky pick because of his injury history, but he should be an option.

30. Green Bay Packers: Ezra Cleveland, OT, Boise State

The outside spots on Green Bay’s offensive line are starting to become problematic. Right tackle Rick Wagner, a replacement for Bulaga, is not good. Perhaps more concerning is the fact that left tackle David Bakhtiari is in the final year of his contract. Cleveland is an athletic pass blocker who could eventually take over for him.

Other option: Wide receiver should also be a consideration for the Packers. TCU’s Jalen Reagor would be a nice fit in the Packers’ offense.

31. San Francisco 49ers: Trevon Diggs, CB, Alabama

What better player for Diggs to learn from than Richard Sherman? While most of San Francisco’s secondary is in a contract year, the 49ers could get out ahead of restocking the group with Diggs.

Other option: After trading DeForest Buckner to the Colts, the 49ers could target a defensive tackle in the back of the first round. If so, that player would likely either be Ross Blacklock of TCU or Justin Madubuike of Texas A&M.

32. Kansas City Chiefs: Kenneth Murray, LB, Oklahoma

If Murray happens to be around when the Chiefs pick, he should be an easy choice. Kansas City’s linebackers last season were average, and Murray would provide an upgrade of athleticism.

Other option: After losing Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller, cornerback is a need for the Chiefs. TCU’s Jeff Gladney or Clemson’s A.J. Terrell could be considered.

30 best defensive prospects -- 1 for each team

MLB Pipeline recently unveiled its annual All-Defense Team, but there were only so many spots to fill. It made us realize there were so many outstanding defenders across all 30 organizations.

Evaluating defense is still very much subjective, with metrics measuring fielding still imperfect. Still, each system has glovework that stands out more than others, and we considered many to present one best defender from each organization.

American League East

Orioles: Cadyn Grenier, SS, No. 9 Grenier's stellar glovework at shortstop was key in helping Oregon State win the 2018 College World Series, and in the process, he established himself as one of the best defensive prospects in the Draft before going to the Orioles as the No. 37 overall pick. With good hands, plus arm strength and plenty of range, Grenier has all the ingredients needed to stick at the position long term.

Red Sox: Bobby Dalbec, 3B, No. 6 Dalbec has always possessed a strong arm and has worked hard to improve his agility and range at third base, with several Red Sox officials rating him as a plus defender and scouts outside the organization grading him more as solid. He also owns prodigious raw power and ranked second in the Minors in extra-base hits (70) and RBIs (109) last year, and fourth in homers (32).

Yankees: Estevan Florial, OF, No. 1 (MLB No. 45) Florial has some of the best all-around tools in the Minors, with well-above-average raw power, speed and arm strength. He continues to improve as a center fielder, projecting as a plus defender, and has an exceptionally strong arm for the position.

Rays: Lucius Fox, SS, No. 9 While there's no shortage of standout defenders in the highly athletic Rays system, Fox, a top-flight athlete with plus-plus speed, could be the best. He's played shortstop exclusively as a pro and committed 15 errors in 105 games last season while reaching Double-A at age 21. His athleticism makes him an electrifying defender, and he has the requisite physical tools to remain at the position for the long haul.

Blue Jays: Kevin Vicuna, SS, unranked The Blue Jays felt so good about Vicuna's defense in 2017 that they had the then-19-year-old handle shortstop duties for Class A Advanced Dunedin from April 23-June 1, even though Vicuna previously had never played above the Rookie Gulf Coast League. He's an athletic and, at times, flashy defender, with quick, twitchy hands that help him absorb anything hit his way and a quick release that causes his average arm strength to play up across the infield.

AL Central

White Sox: Nick Madrigal, 2B, No. 5 (MLB No. 49) The White Sox may try Madrigal at shortstop, because he has the hands and actions to thrive there, but his average arm makes him a better fit at second base. With his quickness and instincts, he could be a Gold Glove Award winner at the keystone, and he also rated as the best pure hitter in the 2018 Draft, where he went No. 4 overall.

Indians: Eric Haase, C, No. 27 Haase reached the Majors for the first time late last season, seven years after the Indians took him in the seventh round of the 2011 Draft. Though he's blossomed on both sides of the ball during the past two seasons, it's been Haase's defensive gains that have helped him climb the Tribe's depth chart. After throwing out 37 percent of attempted basestealers in 2017, Haase improved that mark to nearly 49 percent in '18 (33 of 68).

Tigers: Jake Rogers, C, No. 12 The Tigers got Rogers as part of the Justin Verlander deal, and in Rogers' first full season with the organization, he cemented himself as the game's best defensive catching prospect, earning a spot on MLB Pipeline's All-Defense Team for the second year in a row. He threw out 55.6 percent of potential basestealers in 2018, upping his career rate to 48.5 percent.

Royals: Sebastian Rivero, C, unranked M.J. Melendez is very athletic for a catcher and has a chance to become a plus defender with an arm to match. Yet South Atlantic League managers rated Rivero, his teammate at Lexington last summer, the low Class A circuit's best defensive backstop in a Baseball America survey last year. The Royals liken Rivero to a young Salvador Perez, and in addition to his physical ability, Rivero also draws raves for his leadership skills, intelligence and work ethic.

Twins: Gilberto Celestino, OF, No. 14 Signed by the Astros for $2.5 million in 2015, Celestino made his United States debut in '17, then got dealt to the Twins in the Ryan Pressly trade last season. He's drawn comparisons to Albert Almora Jr. for his instincts in center, and coaches in Elizabethton feel he's one of the best defenders they've ever seen.

AL West

Astros: Myles Straw, OF, No. 15 Straw has double-plus speed that gives him tremendous range in center field, where his plus arm also stands out at a position not noted for strong throwers. That quickness also plays well on the bases (he topped the Minors with 70 steals in only 79 attempts in 2018) and allows him to beat out hits (he led the Minors with a .358 batting average in '16).

Angels: Jordyn Adams, OF, No. 6 The Angels signed Adams away from playing football and baseball at North Carolina, and he immediately put his tools on display during his pro debut and during instructs. He's still raw, but the Angels feel he has elite range and the highest ceiling as a defender in the organization.

A's: Nick Allen, SS, No. 15 Allen was viewed by many scouts as perhaps the best defensive prospect available in the 2017 Draft, and he's done nothing to diminish that reputation after signing for more than double slot value as the A's third-round pick. There is no doubt among scouts that Allen can stick at shortstop. He's already a plus defender there, with outstanding range that leads to many highlight-reel plays and plus arm strength that allows him to make throws from all over the diamond.

Mariners: Evan White, 1B, No. 5 It's not often a first baseman is mentioned as one of the premier defensive players in the Minors, but that's the reality with White, who recently was named to the All-Defense Team. All signs point to him becoming a Gold Glove Award winner at the position, as he's athletic with outstanding footwork, a strong arm and plus range. His ability to pick throws is elite, and he makes every infielder on his team better as a result.

Rangers: Jose Trevino, C, No. 28 Trevino won Rawlings Minor League Gold Gloves in both 2016 and '17, before surgery on his non-throwing shoulder last July squashed any chances of a three-peat. He's an outstanding receiver and blocker, gets the most out of his strong arm with a quick release and accurate throws and also earns high marks for his ability to run a pitching staff.

National League East

Braves: Cristian Pache, OF, No. 6  (MLB No. 68) Pache is generally considered to be the best defender in the Minor Leagues, leading our All-Defense Prospect Team. He has the speed and instincts to be a Gold Glove center fielder to go along with a right fielder's arm.

Marlins: Jose Devers, SS/2B, No. 13 The cousin of Red Sox third basemen Rafael Devers, Jose was acquired by the Marlins last offseason in the blockbuster trade that sent Giancarlo Stanton to the Bronx. While he doesn't have his cousin's offensive profile, Devers is a far superior defender, with the soft hands, slick footwork and strong arm needed to be a big league shortstop. He showcased his defensive prowess last season, committing only seven errors and posting a .971 fielding percentage as an 18-year-old in full-season ball.

Mets: Andres Gimenez, SS, No. 1 (MLB No. 55) The shortstop on our All-Defense Team, Gimenez reached Double-A in 2018 as a teenager. While he needs to add strength offensively, he has everything he needs to play shortstop defensively in the big leagues. He has plus hands, range and the internal clock to allow him to slow the game down.

Phillies: Luis Garcia, SS, No. 14 Signed for $2.5 million in July 2017, Garcia had a tremendous debut in the Gulf Coast League in '18 on both sides of the ball. He has a strong arm to go along with terrific hands and feet, and speed that gives him excellent range to stay at shortstop long term. He's only going to get better as he matures.

Nationals: Victor Robles, OF, No. 1 Revered as one of the top defenders in the Minor Leagues and a member of MLB Pipeline's All-Defense Team, Robles has game-changing abilities in center field. His near top-of-the-scale speed gives him range for days in center field, and he's made strides in improving both his reads and routes in the past two years. His plus-plus arm is among the strongest in the Minors, and he totaled 29 outfield assists from 2016-17 before an injury-plagued campaign in '18.

NL Central

Cubs: Miguel Amaya, C, No. 1 (MLB No. 87) Amaya's defensive ability and makeup led the Cubs to sign him for $1.25 million out of Panama in 2015, and he continues to impress even though he has been pushed aggressively in the Minors. His aptitude to frame and block pitches is advanced for a teenager, and his arm strength has improved to at least solid and plays up because of his quick transfer and accuracy.

Reds: Mike Siani, OF, No. 9 The Reds' fourth-round pick got first-round money to sign because of his all-around tools. But his defensive skills have long stood out, and he might have been the best defensive outfielder in the 2018 Draft class, with the ability to cover a ton of ground in center and an arm that allowed him to throw low-90s fastballs from the mound in high school.

Brewers: Payton Henry, C, No. 11 A sixth-round pick in 2016 who signed for nearly twice his slot value, Henry threw out nearly 44 percent (46 of 105) of attempted basestealers and had only six passed balls in his first full season. A quick release and a strong, accurate arm help Henry to combat the running game, and evaluators have been impressed with how he's developed a receiving style that utilizes his big, athletic frame. Henry is also praised for his energy and leadership skills.

Pirates: Ke'Bryan Hayes, 3B, No. 2 (MLB No. 48) Hayes was the third baseman on our All-Defense Team, and for good reason. He entered pro ball as one of the better defenders at the hot corner, but he's gotten even better as he's committed himself to his conditioning, adding to his agility and range to make him the best in the Minors at the position.

Cardinals: Delvin Perez, SS, No. 28 The Cardinals' first-round pick in 2016 has had trouble finding any traction offensively, but there are no concerns about his defensive chops. He gets plus grades on his arm and his overall fielding, thanks to a plus arm when he needs it, above-average hands and plus speed that helps him cover a lot of ground.

NL West

D-backs: Geraldo Perdomo, SS, No. 21 Perdomo's United States debut in 2018 was solid all-around, and he even earned a promotion from the Arizona Rookie League to the Pioneer League in the process. Tall and rangy, the teenager has shown the tools to stay at shortstop long term with outstanding range, actions and hands to go with a strong arm.

Rockies: Yonathan Daza, OF, No. 18 Thanks to his plus speed and fine instincts, Daza covers a lot of ground in center field, and he possesses a plus-plus arm that stands out at his position. He's also a career .310 hitter who won the Class A Advanced California League batting title in 2017 with a .341 mark.

Dodgers: Will Smith, C, No. 5 An outstanding athlete for a catcher, Smith has already shown that he's capable of playing third base and filling in at second. He has very soft hands and impressive agility, making him a fine receiver and framer, and he has a solid arm that plays better than that because of his fast footwork.

Padres: Buddy Reed, OF, No. 13 A member of MLB Pipeline's All-Defense Team, Reed's 70-grade speed and long, gliding strides allow him to cover huge swaths of territory in center field -- and he showcased that with his catch in last year's SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game. Reed also has a strong arm and recorded 12 outfield assists in 2018, surpassing his combined total from his first two seasons.

Giants: Joey Bart, C, No. 1 (MLB No. 23) The No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 Draft, Bart draws more attention with his bat, but his work behind the plate is impressive as well. He has improved markedly since high school, when scouts wondered if he could stay at catcher, enhancing his agility and receiving and improving the accuracy of his strong arm.

The Minnesota Twins crushed the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday in a 8-1 win at Charlotte Sports Park. One day later, the Rays came down to Fort Myers for a meeting and returned the favor. The Tampa Bay offense came alive and broke out with nine runs this afternoon. The Rays got to work in the second inning today. Micah Johnson hit a flyball to left field that Chris Heisey lost in the sun. The gift double started a rally and Jason Coats drew a walk. Later in the inning, Johnny Field hit a run-scoring single to left and the Rays were on the board. The Twins would come right back in the third against Jake Faria. Joe Mauer started it with a two-out double to right. Jorge Polanco reached base when Jake Faria missed a catch and Joe Mauer scored on the play. This tied the game at one after three innings of action. Brandon Snyder ignited another rally for the Rays in the fourth. He led-off with a triple and Micah Johnson singled him home. With two outs, Denard Span kept it going with an RBI triple and the Rays were up 3-1. Tampa Bay kept their hitting shoes on in the sixth inning. Jason Coats reached first on a throwing error by Jorge Polanco. A wild pitch moved Coats to second and Johnny Field singled. Denard Span plated a pair with a triple to right and Matt Duffy kept the chain alive with a single. The next batter, Tomas Milone reached on a fielder’s choice, which scored Denard Span. The three-run sixth put Tampa up 6-1, but they would rally again in the seventh. Trevor Hildenberger came on for the seventh and struggled again. Micah Johnson lined a one-out double to right and Jason Coats walked. Johnny Field then smacked a Hildenberger pitch out to left for a three-run shot. This put the Rays on top 9-1 after seven innings. Tampa Bay would get back to work in the ninth as Tyler Jay entered the game. Brandon Snyder led-off with a single to left and Michael Russell doubled. Jason Coats reached on an infield single that scored Snyder. Andrew Velazquez doubled in another run and the Rays led 11-1. Jose Alvarado threw a perfect ninth and the Rays got back at the Twins on the road today. 

-Final Thoughts- Jose Berrios had an okay day with bad defense behind him. He went 3 2/3 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Matt Magill got out of the fourth, Fernando Rodney fanned two in the fifth, and Taylor Rogers gave up three in the sixth. Trevor Hildenberger was charged with three runs in an inning of work, DJ Baxendale threw a 1-2-3 eighth, and Tyler Jay had an odd outing. He struck out the side, but allowed two runs on four hits. The Twins scattered four hits today and hit 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position. They left five men on base. Tonight, will be the night cap in an odd split-squad day. Half the team heads across town to play the Red Sox at JetBlue Park. Myles Jaye faces Rick Porcello in that one.
