Dee Snider: Shut Up and Give Me the Mic: A Twisted Memoir (2013)

The tragedy of Twisted Sister is that they waited FOR-EVER to break through to the big time, enduring a near-decade-long fringe existence breaking attendance records in New York Tri-State Area clubs, before winning it all and losing it again in a flash of multi-platinum success and MTV overexposure.

Basically a rollercoaster cautionary tale, frontman Dee Snider's autobiography, Shut Up and Give Me the Mic: A Twisted Memoir, candidly describes those innumerable hours of unsigned glam rock also-ran degradation, the heady rush of hair metal stardom, and, to his credit, the resulting hubris that derailed Twisted Sister's career and sent Snider down several musical dead-ends before reinventing himself as an actor and radio DJ.

As someone who's fascinated by rock 'n' roll's secret histories, I'd have been satisfied with Dee's detailed account of T.S.'s back-breaking working-band frustrations throughout much of the 1970s.

But as a kid who experienced Twisted Sister's vertiginous 1980s rise and fall as a devoted fan-turned-hater, the book's second half was equally insightful and entertaining, because, well Mr. Snider really knows how to work up his audience.

In fact, if you were lucky enough to ever see Twisted Sister on stage, you'll know they were a devastating force and Snider an incredible frontman; they wiped the floor with 90% of their hair metal brethren and this book goes some way towards explaining why and rehabilitating their image and achievements.
