In a blockbuster deal, the Lakers trade for the Knicks' Julius Randle
The last few years of the Los Angeles Lakers' past have been very interesting. Few NBA teams have changed as much as this one has. Even if a team is rebuilding, they might think about selling their young core for a superstar. So, they think LeBron James will only sign with them if they're still trying to get better.
The Lakers lost because of this. Put it down to the Lakers being different. This is one of the league's best names and biggest markets. Most of the time, a good player will want to play for the Lakers. James was a big name. After he signed with them, it was clear that they should trade their young core for Anthony Davis.
Still, the Lakers traded away a lot of guys who went on to have great careers. Since leaving L.A., Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Larry Nance Jr., and Josh Hart have all been great. Julius Randle of the New York Knicks has also been great. Could he one day play for the Lakers again?
The Trade Proposal
New York Knicks Receive: G D'Angelo Russell, F Rui Hachimura, G Jalen Hood-Schifino, C Jaxson Hayes, 2029 First-Round Pick (LAL)
Los Angeles Lakers Receive: F C Isaiah Hartenstein and Julius Randle
The Knicks' recent past has been very different. In some ways, the Knicks have been known for what they didn't do, while the Lakers have been known for what they did. This team almost did things, but they have yet to go through with them.
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were meant to play for New York. In the end, the two stars turned down the Knicks and joined the Brooklyn Nets, a city foe of the Knicks. The Knicks were then expected to trade for Donovan Mitchell. The Cleveland Cavaliers were faster and caught up to them. How has everything gone for New York?
Rather well. Last season, the Knicks made it to the second round of the playoffs. This team has kept up with the competition and kept all of its properties. Should Randle be moved now?
Why The New York Knicks Do The Deal
Some new rumors have given rise to this idea. Randle has just switched from CAA to WME sports. Why does it matter that he changed sides? Well, CAA is very close to Leon Rose, the president of the Knicks.
Does that mean that Randle is going to leave New York? In no way. Still, it gives people a chance to guess. Also, this is not the first time we've talked about how the Knicks might trade Randle. As brilliant as he is, he is very hard to predict—Randle's production changes from one game to the next and from one season to the next. Here, the Knicks have decided that enough is enough.
In the process, they might go backward. Still, they would be getting more money. This first-round pick is very important because it is far away, and the Lakers are getting older. When you add in interesting young players like Hachimura and Hayes, the Knicks might decide to move on from their star forward. Should the Lakers take on a guy with so many ups and downs?
Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
Randle may not always be the same. That could be a result of him having too much on his plate. He was the first choice in New York, and Randle might not be the right person for that job. On the other hand, he would be one of the best third-string players in the NBA. That would be his job for the Lakers.
Randle, on the other hand, could be a better defense. In Los Angeles, that wouldn't be a big deal. Anthony Davis is one of the best players at the back of the defense in the league. He could make up for Randle's weaknesses on that end of the court. Randle would make the Lakers much more exciting to watch on offense.
He would have such an effect that they wouldn't miss Russell all that much. Randle is also a player like that. Lastly, he would take Hachimura's place in the starting group. Overall, this trade should help the Lakers become a better team. It could help them win the Larry O'Brien Trophy for the second time in recent history.

Tarotober Day 31: Random Assortment - Knight of Cups - Page of Pentacles - Knight of Wands - Page of Swords
Club concerts were becoming increasingly popular among the Pratt residents. Likely, it was because they were inexpensive. If you came into a club, you wouldn't pay the same premium as going to one of the concert halls, and you could get cheaper drinks than a hall would charge as well.
Plus, well. No one would turn down a dance to one of these songs, with the thumping bass that you felt in your chest.
Jaxson was enjoying it himself, honestly. For once off the clock while at the club, he scanned the dancers in the crowd, his eyes falling on his personal favorite. Not that he chose favorites, he would have insisted. Jaxson wasn't one for settling down, and Lilith knew none of the dancers were expecting him to. Who wants to settle down with the bouncer at the gentlemen's club?
But there was something about the thin shifter who was removing a too heavy sweater, baring a little more skin in a half-shirt skin tight hoodie, that always drew Jaxson to him. Maybe it was the fact that he didn't pursue him for more. Jaxson was the one pursuing, and that was an oddity on its own. Whatever it was, he was greatly enjoying the show Cesare put on, a smirk tilting up the corners of his lips when the dancer met his eye and grinned in return.
Cesare made his way over to Jaxson, well aware of the tip he was about to get for the night. Jaxson always tipped well, even if they didn't hook up, and with the concert ongoing, he was fairly positive they would hook up anyway. And if Jaxson wanted to tip him more for a fun night, well, Cesare wasn't going to turn that tip away. Even if it did make him feel a little bit cheap.
Swaying his hips, he stopped in front of Jaxson, enjoying the wider smile that spread across the man's face as he held out a hand. "Private room?" he suggested, already aware that Jaxson was going to nod. He always did, and Cesare knew it as well as he did.
"Don't mind if I do."
As the dancer and his client headed to the back, they passed a blonde at the bar who was certainly not a regular. It was unusual to see women in the club on their own, let alone one in the type of clothes this girl was.
A pretty blonde fae in what could only be a club variant of business casual, Amalie sipped her drink, smiling to herself as she watched the band perform. Well, it wasn't really the band she was watching. It was the singer out front, the gorgeous brunette with a captivating stage presence. Elsie Catchlove played the crowd in the palm of her hand, and she knew it. And Amalie was certainly no exception to that rule.
As the song came to an end, Elsie gave the crowd a minute to cheer, an occurrence even when in a small venue like this, before she spoke. "We're going to take a ten minute break. Enjoy a couple older records, and we'll be back soon!" Ignoring the disappointed sounds, Elsie switched her microphone off and hopped off the stage, heading directly to the blonde at the bar.
"I cannot believe you actually came to the Allie Cat just to see my show." Honestly, she was amused at how out of place Amalie looked. While Elsie and the band could fit in, given their performance clothes, Amalie would stand out even in that. The only indication that she had attempted club wear was that the skirt she wore settled higher on her thighs than normal, though the tight blazer over her shirt offset that to still make it look too professional.
Still, Amalie grinned back at her and offered up a fresh drink. "It's water," she promised, letting her girlfriend sip heavily before she leaned in for a kiss. "You sound even better in a small place like this, you know. You should play shows like this when I'm in town more often. Though, maybe not at the Allie Cat next time. Not that I mind it here, but um. I've had four different men try to pay me for a solo dance, and I don't think they mean the choreography I'm learning for The Gondoliers."
"No, they definitely don't mean that," Elsie agreed with a laugh, setting her now half empty cup down on the bar beside Amalie's bright cocktail. She had tasted the liquor in her kiss, not that it was a surprise that her girlfriend was drinking. A week off of shows was a blessing, and certainly Amalie was taking advantage of it. "How was your trip? I thought you wouldn't get here until much later tonight."

Teams: Manly's axing after show-stopping game
The NRL's form player of the year, Tom Trbojevic, is set to make his return for the Sea Eagles after missing round 23 with a facial injury.Last week, Trbojevic was ruled out as a precaution amid conflicting reports the superstar fullback had damaged a pre-existing facial fracture.
Tom Trbojevic (Getty)While serious injury concerns were put to bed, the Sea Eagles took no chance, resting their talisman who is set to make an emphatic return against the Bulldogs this week.Meanwhile, star teammate Moses Suli has been dropped from Des Hasler's squad despite putting up a stellar man of the match performance last week. Suli has been dropped to reserves, replaced by Brad Parker who slots straight into the centres.

(Getty)Elsewhere, it's tough luck for the Tigers who have the unfortunate task of taking on the Panthers without standout star Adam Doueihi who has been sidelined with a knee injury. To make matters harder for Michael Maguire's men, star winger Brian To'o has made an early return from injury and will line up on Sunday evening.Meanwhile, the Raiders have dumped halfback Sam Williams after back-to-back critical losses to the Storm and Manly.

RWLC: Lebanon 32 - 14 Ireland Match Report & Highlights
Lebanon 32 Ireland 14 RLWC 2022 : Ireland fell to a crushing defeat at the hands of Lebanon as their Rugby League World Cup dreams were shattered in the Leigh Sport Village.
Reece Robinson was the first to get over for a try for Lebanon and Mitchell Moses added the extras.
It worsened for Ireland just two minutes later as Jacob Kiraz benefitted after Ireland fell foul to ill discipline and conceded another penalty within their own 30 metre line.
Brandon Morkos added Lebanon’s third try just before half-time but Ireland did at least respond before the break as Louis Senior skipped over for the Wolfhounds’ first try. The extras were missed and that made it 20-4.
Lebanon head coach Michael Cheika, speaking to BBC Two:
“It was a bit scrappy at times. You clearly saw two teams who were nervous playing in a very important game.
“We stuck to the fundamentals well, I wasn’t too happy we lost our heads a little bit. I thought Ireland would try and rough us up a little bit, we lost a bit of our way there and that’s when we made some mistakes.
“But all in all, really pleased. Now we’ve got to finish the job off to qualify against Jamaica. How we prepare over the next seven days will decide if we get through or not.”
Head-to-head
Lebanon have never lost to Ireland in their three previous meetings, drawing twice and winning once.
Their last encounter was in 2009, when Lebanon recorded a 40-16 win in Bridgend and this will be the first time they’ve faced each other at the Rugby League World Cup.
Ireland record
Ireland first qualified for the Rugby League World Cup in 2000 as co-hosts, registering their best performance to date of fifth place.
They have featured in every tournament since, coming ninth in 2017 after failing to advance from their group, despite two wins over Wales and Italy.
They are in fine form winning their last three men’s internationals by an aggregate score of 115-14.
Lebanon record
The 2017 Rugby League World Cup was just the second time the Cedars have qualified for the tournament.
Mitchell Moses put in a Player of the Match performance in their opening game to claim their first ever win, a 29-18 victory over France.

NBA predictions - MVP, Finals matchups and future stars
New Post has been published on https://viraljournalist.com/nba-predictions-mvp-finals-matchups-and-future-stars/
NBA predictions - MVP, Finals matchups and future stars
Who is the favorite for MVP — LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, James Harden, Luka Doncic or another contender?
Who is winning the Finals: One of the Los Angeles teams or the field?
We polled the ESPN Forecast panel of experts for their votes about a third of the way through the 2019-20 NBA season. The results include the most likely conference finals and NBA Finals matchups, the young players with the most superstar potential, the best franchises for the next three seasons and more.
Who is most likely to win MVP?
Note: Voters ranked their top three picks.
Last season, this two-player race came down to Antetokounmpo and Harden. Though there is a deep pool of contenders in 2019-20, Giannis and LeBron — the leaders of the top two teams in the league — are emerging as the front-runners, with Giannis in the lead at the moment.
Giannis Antetokounmpo | MIL (56.5% first-place votes): 178 points
LeBron James | LAL (28.3%): 128 points
James Harden | HOU (8.7%): 59 points
Luka Doncic | DAL (4.3%): 34 points
Anthony Davis | LAL (2.2%): 13 points
Others receiving votes: Kawhi Leonard
MORE: MVP straw poll — is a Giannis repeat in the works?
Who is the NBA rookie or sophomore with the most long-term potential?
Note: Voters ranked their top three picks.
Last year’s Rookie of the Year runs away with this one. In his second season, Doncic has already emerged as an MVP candidate for the surprising Mavericks (though he’s currently recovering from an ankle injury that could have him out for a couple of weeks).
Others receiving votes: Deandre Ayton, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Kendrick Nunn, Jaren Jackson Jr., Tyler Herro, Coby White, Jaxson Hayes, Cam Reddish, Mo Bamba
MORE: How Luka Doncic is making his NBA MVP leap so quickly
What is the most likely Eastern Conference finals matchup?
Coming into the season, the Bucks and Sixers looked like the clear favorites in the East. Despite impressive starts by the Celtics and Heat, that hasn’t changed.

What is the most likely Western Conference finals matchup?
The top of the West is still strong, but our panel doesn’t see anyone touching the two Los Angeles teams at full strength. There were zero other selections for a WCF matchup besides Lakers-Clippers. ESPN’s Basketball Power Index gives these teams a 42% chance of meeting at some point in the postseason.

What is the most likely NBA Finals result?
Our panel sees a top tier of NBA title contention class that goes three deep — Lakers and Clippers, followed by the Bucks. But it’s worth noting that FiveThirtyEight’s projection system is also high on the Rockets and 76ers as potential title teams who could end up breaking through.

NBA champs: Los Angeles or the field?
FiveThirtyEight gives the Clippers (24%) and Lakers (13%) a less than 50% collective chance to win the title. BPI is even lower on the Los Angeles powerhouses as truly overwhelming favorites, with a collective 17.8% chance at a championship between the two teams.
Of course, one reason for that is the Lakers and Clippers probably have to go through each other in the West. Still, our panel is high on one of them getting it done.

The Clippers enjoy the benefit of having most of their core (outside of Montrezl Harrell) under contract for this season and next season. It’s assumed that upcoming free agent Anthony Davis will re-sign with the Lakers in the summer of 2020 barring some kind of disaster, but LeBron James turns 35 on Dec. 30. Our panel is putting more faith in the Clippers long term.

No team has more at stake this season with a superstar player than the Bucks. Antetokounmpo will be eligible to sign a supermax contract in Milwaukee as soon as free agency begins next summer. That decision will swing the future of the Eastern Conference. If Giannis agrees to the deal, he’ll be with the Bucks through most of prime, potentially competing for titles with regularity — as our panel predicts here.

These 6 NBA teams will hit the under on their projected win total
Sorry, Lakers fans.
Everyone in the NBA is undefeated in the preseason, but that glorious early fall optimism has a way fading quickly. With only a few weeks until the games start to count for real, the SB Nation staff examined some over/under betting lines on win totals and picked the teams we think will disappoint.
The lines are from Draft Kings and all come with their own odds. These the teams we like to hit the under this season.
Los Angeles Lakers: 51.5
There are so many potential pitfalls for the Lakers. On the brink of season No. 17, LeBron James no longer seems indestructible after being limited to 55 games because of a groin injury last year. LeBron has famously coasted through the regular season (especially on the defensive end) for the last few years, but he doesn’t have that luxury this season even if he remains fully healthy. Who else is going to initiate this offense? Rajon Rondo? Quinn Cook? Alex Caruso? Would any of these guys even be in an NBA rotation if they weren’t with the Lakers?
Yes, Anthony Davis is great, but 65 percent of his field goals were assisted last year, a number that’s more than 10 percentage points higher than even Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic. For all of Davis’ talent, it’s hard to imagine him carrying the offense by himself if and when LeBron isn’t on the court. The defense will likely be a real problem even if they’re at full strength. Then there’s the issue of lineup optimization: Davis doesn’t love playing center full-time despite that being his best use when the games really count. Davis is already talking about the Lakers using “super big” lineups with Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee on the court together. That’s a hard pass.
I’m buying the idea of the Lakers being able to beat anyone in the playoffs if they’re healthy. The LeBron-AD two-man game is that intriguing. I just don’t see them winning 52 games or more before they get there.
— Ricky O’Donnell
Milwaukee Bucks: 56.5
Giannis Antetokounmpo was everything last season, but as a one superstar team, the Bucks were still a team only as good as the sum of their parts. So what happens when one piece of the machine is stripped away?
Malcolm Brogdon’s signing with the Indiana Pacers was one of the most overlooked moves of the 2019 offseason. Brogdon’s a really good on-ball defender and an elite shooter. Both things are crucial to what makes Milwaukee’s system work. He connected on 51 percent of his shots from the field and 43 percent of his four three-point looks and 93 percent of his free throw attempts. Brogdon’s minutes are super productive, and they’re going to be replaced by less stable replacements. Will this be Wes Matthews’ bounce back season? Does Pat Connaughton take a leap? Donte DiVincenzo maybe?
There’s a missing piece in Milwaukee’s floor-spacing offense, and no obvious replacement.
— Matt Ellentuck
Indiana Pacers: 47.5
There are several reasons why 48 wins is a reach for the Indiana Pacers this season, but none touch the unknown surrounding Victor Oladipo. Here’s what Pacers head coach Nate McMillan said about his star guard last week: “I don’t anticipate Victor being available for a while, and I don’t know what a while is. There’s no timetable. “I haven’t had any information given to me that he will be practicing live anytime soon.”
Now, a Pacers optimist can counter by looking at Indiana’s “strong” finish after Oladipo’s injury. Yes, they avoided total collapse and made the playoffs. But after January 26th, they also had the league’s 24th offense and a defense that relied on an ability to force turnovers. Indiana also lost five of their top-seven scorers—including Bojan Bogdanovic, who averaged 20.7 points per game after Oladipo went down—and five of their six minutes leaders. Who is replacing Thad Young?
Malcolm Brogdon was really good in the role he had in Milwaukee, but asking him to generate shots on a team that doesn’t have Giannis Antetokounmpo or Khris Middleton eating all the defense’s attention will be quite an adjustment. T.J. Warren is a nice player, and we’ll see how he responds to competitive basketball for the first time in his NBA career. But the Pacers have too many questions and concerns to knock on the door of a 50-win season until they have at least one healthy All-Star making a nightly contribution. Onward to 2021.
—Michael Pina
Indiana Pacers: 47.5
This is your resident Indiana Pacers fan, doubling down on the Pacers hitting the under. There is no optimistic way to spin this but Pacers are going to spend a large chunk of their season without their star in Victor Oladipo. And that team without Oladipo, probably won’t be in the hunt to win 50 games. This feels like free money.
Oladipo ruptured the quad tendon in his knee and at one time had an expected return of January, but the Pacers continue to preach there is no timetable for his comeback. The Pacers also have no reason to rush their star back onto the court this season.
No matter how lovable Domantas Sabonis and Myles Turner and Malcolm Brogdon may be, they are sadly not a 48-win team. They will be fine and and sometimes fun. Just not ya know ... as good as they’d be with Oladipo on the floor.
— Whitney Medworth
Washington Wizards: 27.5
This summer featured Ted Leonsis reportedly calling every high-profile general manager candidate he could think of and begging them to take a job as the highest paid GM in the NBA, with none of them even accepting the interview. Tommy Sheppard seems like an extremely qualified and well-respected dude, but the Zards needing to resort to roughly their 5th choice tells you all you need to know about the state of their roster. Several smart people took one glance at the situation and quickly determined it was a loser for them.
Thankfully for fans, the Zards do have their own pick, so SuperTanking could prove extremely fruitful. So could trading Bradley Beal, who rules, but is almost certainly worth less to the Wizards than the assets he could fetch from a contender.
A healthy John Wall, a handful of new young players and a couple of lottery picks could make the Wizards extremely entertaining in 2020-21. I’m looking forward to the Anthony Edwards era in Chinatown. But betting on 27 wins or fewer this season feels like free money.
— Kim McCauley
New York Knicks: 27.5
Much has been made of the Knicks’ disastrous summer from a macro perspective. They embarrassingly struck out on the superstars they promised to bring in, watched their crosstown rivals swoop in to snag them, and released what amounted to a public apology less than 24 hours into free agency. All this after trading their best young player at the deadline on the theory that having additional cap space to build a superteam was preferable.
In response, the Knicks proudly refused to hand out long-term maximum deals to second-tier stars, which is understandable. The problem is they didn’t build a coherent basketball team in doing so.
The Knicks have more useful NBA players, but none of them fit together. It’s hard to see how Julius Randle helps elevate Mitchell Robinson, or how a bunch of 4.5s up front combined with non-shooting point guards helps space the floor for R.J. Barrett’s inevitable growing pains with the ball in his hands. Does Marcus Morris really help Kevin Knox, or will he simply block his playing time? Where is the infrastructure that’d allow Dennis Smith Jr. to play with the ball in his hands consistently? Is it even possible for David Fizdale to build a functioning five-man unit that has everything he needs without pissing off someone who believes they should be playing?
NBA teams need a pecking order and a coherent style of play to win games in the regular season. The Knicks’ full roster may be better than last year’s 17-win unit, but there’s no way all the parts can add up to a sum of 11 wins more than last season.
— Mike Prada
New Orleans Pelicans: 38.5
They traded for a new core that even Anthony Davis couldn’t drag to competency last year — and all due respect to Zion, but at age 19, AD he is not.
Additions like Derrick Favors, J.J. Redick, and Jaxson Hayes are nice, but not enough to move the needle in the savage West such that they’ll flirt with .500; David Griffin may have them well-positioned for a future when Zion develops, he potentially trades his point guard who can’t hit a J, and all those picks from the Lakers start to become real, tangible, actual hoopsters. But 2019-20 will feature a fair amount more losing than winning.

The 2019 Summer League Standouts
Summer League is finally coming to a close. Just because many didn’t watch lackluster doesn’t mean that *I* didn’t. Yes, I got my fair share of live ball turnovers, travels, and bricks, but I do enjoy watching journeymen fight for one more chance and young players dipping their toes into the shark-infested NBA waters. With that being the case, there were a few players who caught my eyes and stood out during Summer League. Here’s who did and how they did it.
Lonnie Walker IV SG SA: Surprise surprise. The Spurs’ player development program has paid dividends. Lonnie Walker IV is just the latest example. It feels like he made it his personal mission to serve buckets to anybody who tried to defend both in the Utah and Vegas Summer League, and that he has. In 4 games, Walker IV averaged 24.75 points per game shooting 55% from the field. The 4-to-9 negative assist-turnover ratio can be improved upon, but he flashed three-level scoring ability (especially in the midrange game), fulfilling some of the Donovan Mitchell comparisons he got coming out of Miami. The Spurs suddenly have a deep backcourt with Dejounte Murray returning alongside Derrick White and DeMar DeRozan, and Lonnie looks ready to contribute alongside them.
Anfernee Simons PG/SG POR: You like buckets? Well, get a load of Anfernee Simons, because he got a lot of them in Vegas. He showed an ability to score efficiently at all three levels and flashed fancy yet lethal footwork and handle in the process, averaging 22 points per game in the desert while shooting 55% from the field and 64.7% from three-point range. After trading Evan Turner to Atlanta, the Blazers believe Simons is ready to step into their backup point guard spot off the bench. While a 5-12 assist-turnover ratio does not exactly exude confidence running a team, he clearly can help a team keep up on second units, something Portland could use to give Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum longer spells of rest.
Mfiondu Kabengele C LAC / Terance Mann SG LAC: Until another Canadian rookie dominated in consecutive games, I thought Mfiondu Kabengele was the best rookie that played in Summer League. But it wasn’t just him. His former Florida State teammate Terance Mann looked very sharp as well. Kabengele showed his versatility as a brute in the paint routinely stuffing bigs like Moe Wagner right in their path then running the floor, splashing 3s (he shot 7-16 from deep in Summer League) and playing hard all the time. Mann, on the other hand, showed he’s more than just a ‘3-and-D’ guy. He is a more than able creator with the ball in his hands, whether through the pass or looking to score, to go along with his defense. Both of these guys are perfect fits within the Clippers culture of toughness and versatility. For a team that gave up 5(!!!!!) first round picks in the deal for Paul George to land both him and Kawhi Leonard, they’ll need more young players to help sustain this run they’re about to embark upon. These two look like they can contribute right away.
Zach Norvell Jr. SG LAL: Norvell does not have a very sexy game. He isn’t going to routinely break a defense down off the dribble but has shown he can do it, whether it be via drive and kick potential assists or buckets for himself. He has a quick release to get shots off from deep before contests come his way, as evidenced by his game-winner against the Warriors in Sacramento. He’s a willing defender who does well at fighting through screens and using his length to get deflections. He is a very solid, willing passer who routinely makes the extra pass to get his team great shots rather than take good shots Though he is only on a 2-way contract, he looks like the prototypical kind of role player to surround stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis. I had him ranked 44th overall on my big board. That the Lakers got him as an undrafted free agent is a steal.
Tyler Herro SG MIA: Kudos to Tyler Herro for being amongst the few lotteries picks to actually play. Not only did Herro play, but he played very well. Obviously, his range is limitless, but that hasn’t been all he’s shown. While not great at playing through contact, his playmaking in space really impressed me during his time playing in Sacramento and Vegas. He is way more than just a shooter; he can score or playmake off the dribble as well. Miami used him as a de facto point guard during Summer League to help let Herro work on his off the dribble game. While he probably won’t be asked to bring the ball up with the big club, these skills can really come in handy if he gets ran off the three-point line. He fits in well with Jimmy Butler and the other young players Miami has, who knows how to use shooters like Herro (just ask Ray Allen or Wayne Ellington). I thought Miami reached a little to take Herro. I stand corrected, for now at least.
Kyle Guy SG SAC: Basically, anything I said about Herro applies to Kyle Guy, just a lesser version. I thought Guy should’ve been drafted, at the very least. His play in Sacramento and Vegas backed that up for me.
Kendrick Nunn SG MIA / Duncan Robinson SF MIA: Two former undrafted free agents with drastically different games proved that they belong. Kendrick Nunn is a long, athletic, scoring wing who uses his length defensively as well. He gets busy offensively with his long strides, ability to play through contact and flashed an ability to score at all levels. Duncan Robinson may look nothing like an NBA player, yet he looks like exactly like an NBA player. Again, he is more than just a shooter. He repeatedly looked very comfortable putting the ball on the floor and finishing plays after getting run off the three-point line, whether on catch and shoot situations or running off screens or running the offense himself. He is comfortable shooting on the move and hitting contested shots, including this absurd shot on the move *over* the backboard. These two proved they belong in the league. The Heat guaranteed Duncan Robinson’s $1 million for next season, basically securing a roster spot for him on the team next season. We’ll see if Nunn gets the same guarantee as well.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker PG NOLA / Jaxson Hayes C NOLA: Remember when I said Kabengele was the best rookie in Summer League until another Canadian came in and swooped that title away? Well, I wasn’t talking about RJ Barrett. No, I was referring to Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Since all we saw from Zion Williamson was him snatching the soul of Kevin Knox before injuring his knee, his teammate Nickeil stepped up and assured us a Pelican would dominate Summer League. We already knew his ability to and his feel was his best attribute coming out of Virginia Tech. While I knew he could score, I didn’t know he had advanced footwork and scoring ability like this lethal stepback. He has three-point range, but also can get inside the paint and either finish himself or find shooters scattered along the three-point line. He even has flashed some post game as well. He put everything together against the Miami Heat, bringing his team back and dominating in the process. He has the length to guard just about any guard or wing. He’s also the Pelicans’ third guard in line behind Jrue Holiday and Lonzo Ball. Good look scoring on them. We’re going to really look back at how Nickeil fell all the way to 17. He was dominant in Vegas.
Jaxson Hayes, the eighth pick in the draft, played well in Summer League as well. He looked every bit the part of a Clint Capela/Jarrett Allen type of rim running, rim-protecting big. He also caught a body, the first of many. David Griffin looks to have nailed his first draft running the Pelicans, getting these two after trading the 4th pick acquired from the Lakers in the Anthony Davis trade.
Daniel Gafford C CHI: What I said about Hayes applies to Gafford as well. Gafford’s numbers at Arkansas after inexplicably being used improperly compared very well to that of Jaxson Hayes’ during his time at Texas. The gap between the two should not have been 30 spots. Gafford has been a monster on the glass and putbacks and done a good job protecting the rim. He was a steal and a great backup for the Bulls behind Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr.
Bruce Brown PG/SG DET: Bruce Brown made his hay defensively his rookie year for the Detroit Pistons. He worked on his offensive repertoire during Summer League, repeatedly showing plus playmaking working as the point guard. He even messed around and dropped a triple-double. He earned himself an even bigger role heading into his sophomore season.
Zhaire Smith SG PHI / Matisse Thybulle SF PHI: I’m lumping these two together because they both will likely have the same role next season for the gigantic Sixers. Any concern regarding whether Matisse Thybulle can defend in a man-to-man defense should be quelled. His defense translates. Zhaire Smith showed a scoring ability that will help him not be typecast as a one-dimensional offensive threat like Thybulle, who isn’t much of a threat with the ball in his hands. He is going to fly like Carol Danvers running with Ben Simmons in transition. Both Smith and Thybulle are long, tenacious defenders. Philly repeatedly got lit up by point guards last year. They now have three big guards to throw at them in these two and Josh Richardson, all likely having a size advantage. They also ran out of capable players in last year’s playoff run. These two should and likely will get minutes all throughout the year to prove they belong on that stage. Philadelphia is my favorite to boast the league’s best defense with Joel Embiid AND Al Horford protecting the middle. These guys will help on the outside. Good luck scoring against Philly next year.

NBA Free Agency Day 1 Review:
NBA fans went to sleep last night, awaiting to wake up to the much anticipated ‘Woj Bombs’ on Twitter this morning. In the past, day 1 of the NBA Free Agency period has usually been nothing exciting; rumours are spread, and the top tier players take time to make their decisions, making sure they make the correct one by meeting with the various teams that are set out to sign them. This year was completely different and special.
Kemba to give his all to Boston:
Kemba Walker has been one of the beloved players in the league by all fans. Playing on terrible teams for the last few years, he had given everything he had for the Hornets organisation, becoming the all-time leading scorer for them. Now he’s ready to begin his new chapter with the Boston Celtics who offer him much more than Charlotte ever did. Kemba is an All-Star and will continue to star with the Celtics. Replacing Kyrie is tough but after the toxic situation that was developed in his time there, they gain a new leader and calm body in Kemba Walker. He joins Jayson Tatum, Gordon Hayward and Jaylen Brown in an attempt to get out of the east and win a title. Losing Al Horford is a tough hole to cover, especially lacking depth at the centre position. Whilst it was a tough season for Boston, I expect them to return to be the dangerous team we expected them to be.
Brooklyn; The new Kings of New York:
Brooklyn are walking away as one of the biggest winners of this period. Signing superstars and past champions, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, puts them in a serious position for the upcoming NBA seasons. The pair also both agreed to take a salary that leaves them earning just below the max to help the team sign DeAndre Jordan, who is one of the league’s best rebounders and a former All-NBA First Team member. The Nets are now contenders, yet they will be going into the 2019-20 NBA Season without Durant after tearing his Achilles in this year’s NBA Finals. They’re going to be good, potentially a top four seed and once Durant returns to the team, they will be even scarier.
It is crazy how far the Nets have come from five years ago when Billy King traded away everything to the Celtics, leaving them with no picks, eventually becoming the laughing stock of the league. It has been the culture that this team has built over the last few years that has been the main role in recruiting these two superstars to the team. Kenny Atkinson has been a fantastic coach for them and has developed their young core that includes the likes of the ‘Fro’ Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert. The future is bright for the Barclays Centre. An incredible feat to say the least.
Warriors D-Load:
The best team in the NBA was looking to be done and dusted when Durant left for nothing. The formidable super team that was the Golden State Warriors have been the villains for so long, that people were happy to see this team broken up however this only lasted a few hours. In a move that no-one saw happening, Golden State and the Brooklyn Nets agreed to a sign and trade for D’Angelo Russell, the 23-year-old All Star who had a great season last year leading the Nets to the 6thseed in the Eastern Conference. The acquisition of Russell led to the team having to trade one of the hearts and souls of the dynasty, Andre Iguodala to Memphis to avoid being in the hard cap. Iggy is a key player who is going to be missed come playoff time.
The team also resigned sharpshooter and elite defender Klay Thompson to a max deal worth $190 million over the next five years. Klay is likely to miss next season with a torn ACL but is a key piece of the Warriors organisation. Just when you thought this team was down and out, they come back with an All Star to replace a hole in their side. You have to wonder where D-Lo fits on this team once Klay returns so a potential trade for more fitting pieces could be a future possibility.
Fans of the Garden losing faith; time for Dolan to go?
It wasn’t long ago when the fans of the New York Knicks were excited for this time of year; considered a huge chance to get the number 1 pick, Zion Williamson as well as the seeming frontrunners to sign both KD and Kyrie. The team has been in shambles since trading their best asset for the last decade, Kristaps Porzingis, in the hope that it would all come together with the pieces fitting into place. Unfortunately for the Knicks and their fans, it’s been nothing but the complete opposite.
It all began when the Knicks struck out in the lottery, falling to the number 3 pick in the draft. Drafting R.J Barrett seems to be a fantastic selection as he is going to be a stud in the league but missing out on the messiah that is Zion crushed their fans. Today, the team didn’t sign either of Durant or Kyrie and missed out on all the top free agents that they’d guaranteed would be a part of the organisation. If it couldn’t get any worse, the team wasn’t even willing to offer a max contract to KD which fans didn’t take too kindly to. The team walked away from day 1, signing three power forwards which doesn’t make too much sense; Julius Randle, Bobby Portis and Taj Gibson. Knicks President Steve Mills literally issued an apology to the fans of the Garden stating,
"While we understand that some Knicks fans could be disappointed with tonight's news, we continue to be upbeat and confident in our plans to rebuild the Knicks to compete for championships in the future, through both the draft and targeted free agents,".
You know you have failed if you have to write to your fans an apology. Knicks fans are fed up with the direction the organisation has taken whilst being led by James Dolan and you have to question his future and whether or not it is time for him to sell the team.
Philly make the big moves- but have they gotten better?
The Sixers began the day on a high-note, signing Tobias Harris to a five-year deal worth $180 million. Not long after, they completed a sign-and-trade with Miami for Jimmy Butler, receiving Josh Richardson in return who is a very nice piece for the team and should fit comfortably in the team’s structure. The deal is on hold for the time being, but it seems likely that it will get done within the next day as Miami is working with the Mavs to help get the deal done.
In a move out of nowhere, the team also acquired Al Horford on a four-year deal, who has joined the enemy moving from the Sixers rival that is Boston. Both J-Rich and Horford are excellent players and are both elite defenders. Horford has been the ‘Embiid stopper’ for the past few seasons, so Joel can battle with him rather than against him in the upcoming season.
Can this new line-up compete for the title next year after losing their second-best player and key shooter J.J Redick is the real question? Horford and Richardson will help space the floor and bring a new level of defence that is already being led at the front by Embiid. For the money that Harris just got paid, he will need to play at a higher level for the team to compete this upcoming season.
Jimmy Butler headed to South Beach… not just yet:
It was reported that the Miami Heat had completed a sign-and-trade with the Sixers to gain star two-way player Jimmy Butler for Miami’s best player Josh Richardson however currently it appears that the third team involved, the Dallas Mavericks, want Derrick Jones. Jr to be a part of the deal but Miami are reluctant to move him. Whilst this is causing problems, it is safe to assume that Butler will be in a Miami uniform very soon.
Miami is in a good position and there are rumours of the team making a big play for Washington All-Star Bradley Beal who would be a great asset for the team. With the likes of young talent that includes Bam Adebayo and Justise Winslow, as well as a lot of money coming off the books for Miami in 2020, the team’s future is bright. Hopefully, first-round pick Tyler Herro can also provide for the team. The trade to acquire Butler could be the start of a return to the top for South Beach.
Pelicans looking better than ever, even without Anthony Davis:
David Griffin is a magician; he landed the number 1 pick Zion Williamson, traded superstar Anthony Davis for Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, the number 8 pick Jaxson Hayes, pick 17 Nickeil Alexander-Walker and three future first-rounders. Not only does he gain these pieces, but he also opens up enough cap space for a near max contract.
With this cap space, the team traded for a solid veteran in Derrick Favors from the Jazz and also signed one of the best shooters in the league, J.J Redick. Throw in the two-way player that the Pelicans already own in Jrue Holiday and this team is better than any of the teams AD was ever a part of. This Pelicans team has length, athleticism and youth; if you’re a Pelicans fan, you can’t help but be excited and proud of the direction this team is taking. They’re going to be fun to watch.
Is Utah really being slept on for a potential competitor for the title?
The Jazz have finally added someone to take the pressure off Donovan Mitchell come playoff time in the form of Mike Conley, who is a great ball handler as well as an excellent defender, which we know has been the culture Quin Snyder has built in Utah. The team also signed Bojan Bogdanovic and added elite rebounder, Ed Davis, to backup two-time defensive player of the year Rudy Gobert.
I think people are getting carried away with the defensive potential of this team- don’t get me wrong, they’re going to be the number one ranked defence in the league, but I question whether they have gotten that much better to compete for a title. The team lost Ricky Rubio, Jae Crowder, Kyle Korver and Derrick Favors, all who have been contributors for the team in recent seasons. All players they acquired are upgrades, but is it enough to get past the second round? The West is now an open playing field and perhaps they’re the team to push through.
Where will the Board Man get paid?
The biggest question leading up to this free agency period was where will Kawhi Leonard sign? Kawhi held off any contract talks today with it being reported that he will begin his search for a team tomorrow. The race all but seems to be down to three teams; the Clippers, Lakers and the Raptors.
Before free agency began, the Clippers looked a very good chance to sign him. Kawhi has wanted to return to California for some time and the Clippers have a great coach in Doc Rivers and a promising, young team. However, with almost all the top free agents off the board, if Kawhi was to head there, he would be going alone. Whilst still a possibility, it is seeming less likely for Clippers fans that he will join the team.
The Lakers offer a potential three headed monster that would include LeBron, Anthony Davis and Kawhi, which would be absolutely scary for the league. The team would almost be certain favourites for the title, with rumours of adding Andre Iguodala if he is bought out by Memphis as well as signing Rajon Rondo for the minimum. It has been reported that LeBron has been in touch with Kawhi but you have to wonder if Kawhi really wants to be the second or third option on a team. The Lakers are the growing favourites but are still no guarantee to sign him.
And finally, there’s the Raptors. The team who he just won a championship with. So why would Kawhi leave? The reports of him wanting to return home is a strong indication that he wants to go to a team in Los Angeles and if that was to happen, he’s given the nation of Canada more than they could ever ask for. He could also return to the team and continue to build with his teammates a potential dynasty for the future in Toronto.
Day 1 of the 2019 NBA Free Agency was explosive, exciting and is building a strong and intriguing narrative for the 2019-20 Season. We wait and see where the remaining free agents will land for the upcoming season.
