a/n | i literally can’t stop thinking about this movie. tyler owens x javi’s sister has me in a choke hold
you had never been the type to run from your fears, not now and definitely not five years ago. you used to storm chase with kate carter and your brother, javi, as well as three other of your friends. the six of you, led by kate, had come together to see if it was really possible to reduce the intensity of a tornado. you knew that the experiment would be dangerous, but it had never fully occurred to you that you or anyone else could die. that was a mistake you swore you would never make again.
five years had passed and you still were waking up, sweating and shaking from the horrid night where you lost three of your closest friends. you shakily tore the covers from your body, walking quietly to the bathroom so as to not wake the sleeping body still in bed. you closed the door to the bathroom before turning on the light. you turned the sink on, splashing water on your face as a sigh escaped your mouth. you gripped the sides of the sink, attempting to center yourself. “fuck.”
“babe, you in there?” you jumped when tyler knocked on the door, your breathing quickening once more. “babe?” tyler turned the door knob, pushing it up to see you slowly sliding down the wall as you began to hyperventilate. he rushed to your side, which wasn't far in the cramped bathroom. he helped you to the floor, sitting in front of you. “hey, hey, let's just sit down. just breathe with me, okay?” you nodded, following tyler in his exaggerated breathing, feeling as your heart rate began to slow down. “you’re okay, you’re safe.” you nodded, finally noticing the tears streaming down your face.
“sorry, ty, i didn’t mean to wake you.” you apologized through sniffles, wiping at your nose.
“you didn’t wake me. plus, i just wanted to make sure you were okay.” you still felt guilty about it, about him constantly dealing with your nightmares and panic attacks. you felt guilty that you still pushed yourself to storm chase even though you are terrified of losing the ones you love most. you knew you shouldn’t push that guilt or fear away, but there was another part of you that just wanted to help people. “why don’t we go get some breakfast?” tyler helped you to your feet, the two of you trudging over to the diner across from the motel.
breakfast had been mostly silent, tyler trying to start a conversation but you were too stuck in your head. your knee anxiously bounced as you realized you would be heading to oklahoma, and that you were more than likely to run into your brother javi. you had talked to javi a lot over the phone, but it had been at least a year since you had last seen him in person. he’d been begging you for a few weeks now to leave tyler and the wranglers behind and to join his crew and help with a new tornado scanning system. you knew javi just wanted to help people, but the people funding his projects did not have the same interests at heart. “you ready?” you looked, not hardly having touched your food, accepting tyler’s extended hand. “boone’s getting pretty antsy about leavin’. dude’s been blowing up my phone for like the last thirty minutes.” you giggled when tyler showed you his phone with nearly fifty texts from boone.
“i’m surprised he’s even up, let alone ready to hit the road.” tyler tossed an arm over your shoulders, placing a delicate kiss on your temple as you walked back to the motel.
“yeah, well, best not to keep the man waiting.” tyler went to grab your stuff from the motel room before checking out, leaving you to rig up the gps.
“boone! you ridin’ with us?” you shouted over to boone who was talking with dexter, dani, and lily. “we’ve got a seat open for you as well, ben.” you smiled to the journalist, who thought you to be the only sane one of the group. ben smiled at you, his body language showing he was clearly uneasy. “don’t worry, the ride to oklahoma shouldn’t be too bad.”
“it's not that ride that i’m worried about.” before you could question him, boone hopped in beside him, tyler entering the driver’s seat not a moment later.
“let’s ride!” boone whooped, tyler tearing out of the parking lot. you couldn’t seem to find it in yourself to be hyped up like your boyfriend and friend, too anxious about seeing your brother. he had already disapproved of you riding with the wranglers, you couldn’t imagine how he’d react when he found out you were dating tyler owens of all people.
at some point during the ride, you had fallen asleep only to be startled awake by boone, camera in hand as he yelled out the truck. “sorry, babe.” tyler quietly apologized to you, squeezing your hand. you squinted out the window, your stomach dropping at the sight of javi and kate, stood side by side. all the shouting and cheering seemed to be muted when your eyes locked with javi’s. even though you were nervous, the sight of your big brother brought a soft smile to your face.
tyler put the truck in park, the crowd surrounding them. you pushed the door open, hopping down as tyler got the crowd chanting. boone was walking around, filming, while dani, lily, and dexter began to sell the merchandise. you stood off to the side, watching tyler do his thing, a smile gracing your lips. you looked around, catching kate’s eye, her eyes lighting up at the sight of her friend. she walked over to you, engulfing you in a hug before you had time to say anything. “kate! i wasn’t expecting to see you here!” you laughed, gripping kate tightly.
“i didn’t realize you were still chasing, i thought you would at least be riding with javi.” you tensed slightly at your brother’s name, pulling back from kate’s arms.
“uh, yeah, i’ve just decided to ride with the wranglers this season.” your tenseness didn’t go unnoticed by kate, but before she could ask you anything your attention was brought to your brother waltzing over. “javi!” your nerves dissipated when javi threw his arms around you, pulling you into a bone crushing hug.
“i’ve missed you, sis.” you let out a sigh, trying not to let the tears well in your eyes.
“i’ve missed you too, javi.” you pulled back, now seeing your crew watching you. the crowd had mostly left, and the sight of you hugging a man that wasn’t tyler had them concerned. “why don’t you come meet my crew?” you knew javi had no interest in meeting your crew, but you wanted him to see they weren’t just daredevils with a need for a thrill. “hey, guys, i want you to meet my brother, javi, and my good friend, kate!” everyone but boone and tyler had come to meet them. “javi, kate, meet dexter, lily, and dani! oh, and ben! he’s a london journalist writing a piece on american storm chasing.” you pointed to each member, getting soft ‘hellos’ and ‘nice to meet yous’.
“nice to meet you guys!” kate smiled, javi not saying anything. you felt a pang in your heart when javi didn’t seem to take the people you considered to be some of your closest friends.
“well, who do we have here?” you turned to see tyler and boone walking toward you, a large smile breaking out on your face. “you must be javi, and… kate, right?” kate nodded, shaking tyler’s hand.
“kate, javi, this is boone, and this is tyler owens.” tyler walked to your side, slinging an arm loosely around your shoulder while boone waved, going to put the camera back into the truck. “nice to meet you both.” he tipped his hat to the two. you watched javi closely, he practically had steam coming out his ears at the sight of tyler’s arms around your shoulder. javi had always been overprotective, and you wished he would realize you can hold your own. “we’re headin’ out in a few, ‘kay?” you nodded, tyler pressing a kiss to your temple before jogging over to boone. you looked back to javi who was red in the face, and kate who was clearly shocked.
“javi–” you started, javi pulling you to a quiet spot away from everyone else.
“really? tyler owens?” he spat out tyler’s name like it was venom. “c’mon y/n, he’s an idiot who drives into tornadoes! he doesn’t give a shit about anyone, especially those affected by said tornadoes!” tears welled in your eyes, anger bottling up.
“oh, and you do? javi! your investors don’t give any shits about these people! they only care about the money! and you, you’re helping them by getting this data!” you wiped at the tears that spilled over, “we help people, javi! we sell the merch to pay for the supplies, and the revenue we make off the streams and videos go to families in need. we just don’t show that part on the internet.” it seemed to dawn on javi that you would have never ridden with the wranglers for as long as you had if you weren’t helping people. “tyler treats me well, and maybe you’d have seen that if you weren't so busy making assumptions about him.” you spat at him before turning on your heel, walking toward the truck, actively ignoring javi’s shouting.
“you okay?” tyler asked, noticing your rosy cheeks. “want me to beat his ass?” you glared at him, a smile tugging at your lips. tyler was mostly all bark and no bite.
“no, he just needs time.” you reached up, kissing tyler before taking his hand in yours and walking back to the truck. javi watched as tyler opened your door and helped you in, watching tyler stare lovingly at you. and javi knew that he had fucked up.

Sweeter Than Revenge Part 1
Fandom: Twisters, Tyler Owens, f!reader, Scott's Sister!reader Summary: When you try to surprise your brother with a visit in the hopes of mending your strained relationship, it does not go as planned. Rudely dismissed by Scott, you decide to get a little revenge. And who better to do it with than the head Tornado Wrangler himself... Grabbing your backpack off the seat beside you, you stood and joined the crowd of passengers making their way to the front of the bus. You stopped to let an elderly couple join the line in front of you and used the momentary pause to glance out the window at your destination. A small diner in need of a fresh coat of paint and a good window washing sat off to the left while several rows of gas pumps were lined up on the right. Trucks, vans, campers, and SUVs filled almost every parking spot and spilled into the grassy field around the lot. Some vehicles were ancient, rusted machines that barely looked driveable while others were so fresh and high-tech they could have just been driven off a lot. Those were the vehicles you were looking for.
Stepping off the bus, you headed towards the group of four shiny new vehicles on the other end of the parking lot. On the way, your head was on a constant swivel as you took in everything around you: a middle-aged couple arguing loudly about who forgot to tie down the lawn chairs the last time they stopped, a somewhat familiar-looking man in a cowboy hat unloading a piece of equipment from his huge red truck while another long-haired man filmed him, a woman with dreadlocks fiddling with a remote control only for a large drone to drop out of the sky a moment later and land at her feet, a few children racing towards the diner with their exasperated mother trailing behind yelling at them to watch where they were going.
It was utter chaos and you loved it already.
As you approached the vehicles, you saw the Storm PAR logos printed on the sides and breathed a sigh of relief that after this sixth bus stop, you had finally tracked them down. You still didn’t see who you were looking for, so you walked up to a man with dark curly hair wearing a white button-down Storm PAR shirt who was currently crouched down examining a weird solar panel-looking piece of equipment set up next to one of the vans. As you cleared your throat, he looked up from the machine and blinked, as if he was shocked to see someone standing there despite the crowds of people around him. Glancing around, he asked, “Um…can I help you?”
You guess you shouldn’t be too surprised by his reaction. In your cut-off shorts, boots, and halter top, you looked like you should be hanging out one of the trucks you passed when you first got off the bus, not the polished, company polo shirt-wearing tech heads milling around the Storm PAR vehicles. And you didn’t even want to know what your hair and makeup looked like after four hours on that poorly air-conditioned packed bus.
So, instead of taking offense at this guy’s slightly dismissive tone, you smiled as you adjusted the backpack on your shoulder. “Hi. I’m looking for Scott.”
The man glanced over his shoulder but made no move to stand up. “He’s here but he’s in the middle of some data calculations. Can I help you with something?”
Not really. I had time off college and he mentioned you guys were having a really active season so I figured why not come out and see all this in action.” The man was still looking at you like he couldn’t understand why you were talking to him and you suddenly realized you hadn’t explained the most important detail. “Fuck, I’m sorry. I guess I should have mentioned, Scotty’s my older brother.”
Instantly, the man’s demeanor shifted and a huge toothy smile spread across his face. “Oh! You should have led with that. Nice to meet you.”
Rising to his feet, he stuck out his hand and you shook it, officially introducing yourself. When he said his name was Javi Rivera and it was your turn for things to click into place. “Javi! You’re Scotty’s business partner, right? He’s told me about you.”
Javi let your hand drop and his eyes shifted towards his equipment once more. “Really? Well, um, you know, I’ve, uh, heard great things about you too.”
You grinned, grabbing onto the straps of your backpack. “Scotty never even mentioned he had a sister, did he?” Javi gave a slight shrug, still not looking directly at you and you laughed. “Yeah, that sounds like him. Never wants to get personal, everything’s about business with him. To be honest, I don’t see or hear from him that much which is just another reason I figured I’d come surprise him when I had the chance. Plus, I read some research Scotty left lying around last time he came home and it was really interesting. I’m excited to be able to see what you guys do firsthand.”
“Well, I’m sure Scotty will be glad to see you. Let me go grab him.”
Javi turned and disappeared into one of the vans. A moment later, he returned with your brother following closely behind. “Javi, I was in the middle of some important calculations. Why did I have to–” Scott stumbled to a stop as he saw you standing there.
Since he was a teenager, Scott had mastered the art of keeping his emotions hidden. He could be fuming mad, joyously happy, or heartbrokenly sad, and in each case keep the same perfect mask on his face. However, you knew his one tell. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t keep the emotion out of his eyes. And right now, you could practically see flames burning within them.
For the first time, you wondered if coming to see him had been such a good idea. Shifting from one foot to the other, you tried to force a smile as you half-heartedly held out your arms. “Surprise.”
Scott remained rooted to the spot, his only movement the constant forceful chewing of his gum. Javi glanced back and forth between the two of you, the smile slowly draining from his face. Hesitantly, he explained, “She said she was your sister so I figured…”
A cultivated smile spread across Scott’s lips but it didn’t reach his eyes as they continued to burn into yours. “No, it’s all good. I’m just surprised to see her.” Without breaking eye contact, he held his tablet out to Javi who took it from him. “Give me a few minutes to talk to her and then I’ll get back to those numbers.”
Javi started to protest, assuring him there was no rush and he could take his time, but Scott had already closed the distance between you. Grabbing your arm tightly to the point of slight painfulness, he guided you past the rest of the Storm PAR vehicles and into the empty field.
Once you were far enough away that you knew none of his co-workers could hear you, you wrenched your arm from his grasp, snapping, “Get off of me!”
“What the hell are you doing here?” he growled, his mask finally slipping as his nostrils flared and lips curled into a snarl.
“Well, hello to you too!” You examined your arm where he had grabbed you, massaging it gently. “Can’t a girl come visit her big brother?”
“Not when she wasn’t invited or even asked if she could come beforehand! What were you thinking? This isn’t one of your wild party vacations. This is my job!”
“I know that. I wasn’t expecting you to drop everything and take me sightseeing. I just thought I could hang around and watch you guys in action. I’ve read some of the research you left at Christmas and I was hoping maybe I could learn a little more about it.”
Scott shook his head, his hands on his hips. “This is our busiest time of the season. I don’t have time to babysit you.”
“What do you think I am? Eight? I don’t need you to babysit me. I told you, I’m interested in what you do and thought I could just hang around and see how it all works.” You shrugged, “Maybe you could even take me on a chase or two.”
“Hell no. I won’t have you getting scared and causing us to have to turn around in the middle of a storm run. Javi and I have worked too hard to get this company to where it is and I’m not going to let you ruin that because, on a whim, you thought it would be fun to see a storm.” Scott scoffed as he rolled his eyes. “It’s so typical of you to still think that just because you want something or because Mom and Dad will pay for it, everyone else will bend over backward to accommodate you. Well, I don’t have to put up with your bullshit anymore.”
You took several deep breaths and tried to keep your anger in check. This was not at all how you thought this would go, but lashing out right now would only make things worse. So, in a calm, steady voice, you tried to shift approaches. “Scotty, we haven’t spent any real time together since you left for MIT. And back then…I’m not proud of the person I was and I can’t imagine what that must have been like for you. But I was a kid who didn’t know any better! I’ve grown up since you left. And this trip isn’t just something I thought would be fun to do ‘on a whim’. I worked hard to save up the money to come here because I wanted to see you and spend time with you—however little time you may be able to work into your schedule. And I promise I won’t get scared or make you stop your chase. If I don’t like it, I’ll suck it up until it’s over then not ask to go again.” Taking a step forward, you gently placed your hand on his arm and gave him a timid smile. “Let me show you who I am now…how much I’ve changed. Please, Scotty.”
But Scott yanked his arm away and took a step back. “I don’t care where you go, but you need to stay away from me and Storm PAR. Now, I have work to do.” He took one last look at you, and, for just a moment, you thought maybe he felt bad for what he said and was reconsidering things. But then, he blew a small bubble with his gum and popped it loudly in your face. You jumped slightly, the sound sharp and startling, before glaring at him. He had been doing that since you were kids and he knew how much you absolutely despised it. Shooting you one last smug smirk, Scott turned and walked off towards the cluster of Storm PAR vehicles.
You turned to look out into the open field, lip quivering, as you fought against the tears that were burning your eyes. Things between you and Scott had been pretty bad when he left for college, but you hadn’t realized he still really thought so poorly of you. The last few holidays or family events he had been forced to come to, things seemed to be getting a little better. You thought that maybe you had reached a turning point in your relationship. But now it was clear you had been very wrong.
Looking back at the diner and overflow of vehicles, you wondered what you should do now. You had no idea when the next bus came by or how to get a ticket home or if there was a motel nearby you could stay in for the night or how you would even get there if there was or what you would do in the morning or—
UGH! The longer you stared at the Storm PAR logo on the side of the van Scott had disappeared into, the less hurt you felt. Instead, the pain began to shift into outrage. How dare Scott treat you like this? You had spent a lot of money and wasted two weeks of your summer vacation to take this trip to see him. You knew it would involve listening to him drone on about numbers and graphs you could barely comprehend for most of the time, but you were willing to smile, nod, and seem interested to show you cared about what he did. But no! He didn’t even give you a chance to explain yourself or prove that you weren’t here to interfere with his work. He had just torn you down before turning his back on you and walking away. That asshole!
The sun was starting to dip lower in the sky and you realized standing here fuming about Scott wasn’t going to help your situation. You could do that once you found a bus schedule or a place to stay for the night. However, as you stormed back through the parking lot, something caught your eye.
When you had come through the first time and passed the familiar-looking man and the long-haired guy with the camera, you had only seen their truck from behind. But now that you were looking at the front, you noticed the distinctive metal logo attached to the front of the truck’s grille: a tornado with horns jutting out the top of the vortex. And you realized why the man in the cowboy hat looked familiar.
Scott might not talk to you very often, but during the instances that he had, you had heard plenty of complaints about Tyler Owens and his group of Tornado Wranglers. Everything they did was the complete opposite of how Storm PAR operated and it drove Scott crazy that while he was out there doing the “real work”, this group of amateur YouTube chasers were the ones getting all the attention and acclaim when all they were really doing was getting in Storm PAR’s way.
And Scott seemed to have another level of hatred for Owens himself.
Out of curiosity, you had looked up the Wranglers’ YouTube channel and found it pretty entertaining. While Scott viewed every aspect of his work with complete seriousness and professionalism, these guys tackled the same work like they were having the time of their lives. They were still informative, explaining to their viewers how tornadoes formed and the types of destruction they can cause, but they would then drive straight into the center of a funnel or take chat requests of crazy things to do in the storm. It honestly seemed like a great way to get people excited about learning about tornadoes while also keeping them entertained. And it seemed like their nearly 850,000 followers would agree. No wonder Scott hated them so much.
Suddenly, you had an idea—the perfect little act of revenge.
Changing directions, you made your way over to Owens’s truck. You could see he was now alone, tinkering with the equipment attached to the bed of his truck. He had traded his white cowboy hat for a faded backward cap and had pushed his sleeves up above his elbows as he worked, his sun-bronzed skin on full display in the dying light.
Though you had only watched a handful of the Tornado Wranglers’ videos, you had a pretty good idea of the kind of man Tyler Owens was and how you could persuade him to help you. After all, these narcissistic, jacked-up truck-driving, overcompensating pretty boys were all the same. The kind who had been fawned and swooned over their entire adult lives just because they flashed a charming smile or a playful wink in the right direction. However, with just a little stroking of their ego or a bat of your eyes, they could become putty in your hands. All you had to do was introduce yourself.
Reaching the side of the truck, you tucked your hands into your back pockets so it thrust your chest forward and, biting your lip, called out coyly, “Hey there, cowboy.”
Owens glanced up, a curious smile curling across his lips as he saw you, his eyes traveling from your head to boot and back up. “Well, hello there.”
Giggling softly as you placed your hand on the side railing, you asked in a sing-songy voice, “You’re Tyler, right? The big...bad…tornado wrangler?” With each word, you walked your fingers across the railing, your eyes locked on his.
He leaned back, wiped his hands on his jeans, and said, “I might be. Depends on who’s asking.” He was still looking at you but his smile had slipped slightly and you realized you might not have grabbed his attention as well as you thought.
Placing both hands on the railing now, you pushed yourself up slightly, your chest pressed together, and you looked up at him from under your lashes. “What if I’m asking?”
Owens stared at you for a long moment, his eyes still examining you thoughtfully, though you were shocked to see they stayed locked on your face and didn’t dip down to your breast like you had expected. Then, finally, he said, “You seem like a nice girl, sweetheart, but I don't think I'm what you're looking for. Good luck though.” He gave you a kind, yet dismissive nod, and went back to whatever he had been working on.
Your jaw dropped, lips moving silently as you tried to figure out what just happened. This kind of thing always worked on guys like him in the past. Show a little skin, stroke their egos a little, and they would be wrapped around your finger in no time. But he hadn’t even given your act more than a passing glance. It was possible you weren’t his type or maybe he was in a committed relationship, but neither of those things had exactly deterred guys in the past.
You turned around—properly dismissed—and were just about to walk away when another thought crossed your mind. What if…what if you had misjudged him? What if he wasn’t the kind of guy you assumed he was? From what you had seen in his videos, he was cocky and overconfident and a huge flirt, but what if that was all for the cameras? During your very brief interaction, he seemed polite and respectful even as you tried to throw yourself at him, something no other guy had ever done in that situation.
Maybe you had gone about this all wrong. Maybe you needed a different approach. A more honest one…
You hurried around the other side of the truck so you were in front of him once more. Dropping all the over-the-top flirtatiousness from your voice, you said, “Okay, I’m sorry. I thought…it doesn’t matter what I thought, but the point is I shouldn’t have done that. I’ve had a really shitty day and approached this situation all wrong.”
Owens didn’t raise his head, but his eyes drifted back in your direction. Feeling like he was offering you a chance, you explained, “Listen, the deal is I came here to surprise my brother with a visit, and as soon as he saw me, he told me he doesn’t want me here and I should fuck off out of his way.”
That got his attention. Looking up, his brow furrowed, Owens asked, “Your brother said that to you?”
You rolled your eyes and hit the heel of your palm against the side of the truck. “Well, not in those exact words but the sentiment was there. The point is, he told me he didn’t care where I went as long as I left him and his team alone. So, I plan on respecting his wishes…and wondered if I could hang out with your team instead.”
“Well–” He leaned back, clearly not interested in your request, but you cut him off before he could turn you down.
“Please! It’ll just be for a day or two. I promise not to get in the way or mess with any of your work. I just know he has a problem with you guys and seeing me with you will drive him insane.”
Putting down the wrench he was holding, Owens shook his head. “Back up…who are we talking about now? Who’s your brother?”
You realized you needed to get better at introducing people into a conversation before jumping right in. “Scott? He works for Storm PAR?” He hesitated so you sighed and turned towards the other group of storm chasers at the other end of the lot. With one hand on your hip, you pointed lazily with the other, “The surly tall one who never takes off his stupid baseball cap?”
Instantly, Owens straightened up and you knew you had piqued his interest. Chuckling, he asked, “Wait, so you’re telling me Mr. Clipboard and Chewing Gum is your brother?” You nodded. “And you want my help messing with him?”
“Yeah, that about sums it up. So, will you do it?”
The cowboy leaned over the side of the truck and gave you a wide grin. “Oh, sweetheart, you’ve come to the right place.”

We Found Love in a Tornado (Javi Rivera x F!Reader)
A/N: I did not think my first story for this fandom would be Javi but I sat down and this is what came out. I hope you enjoy! Send requests and ideas for Javi or Tyler.
Pairing: Javi Rivera x F! Reader (Kate's Sister) *No physical descriptions besides mentioning younger sister.
Warnings: Language, light angst, possible movie spoilers.
“Oh shit,” you whisper, leaning towards the window as you pass the caravan of Storm Par trucks. Boone leans across you, pressing his cheek to your own and you push him back with a huff, “Get off me.”
“What’s got you in such a tizzy?” he asks, cocking his head like a cocker spaniel.
“It’s my sister,” your head falls back against the seat as you groan, pressing your palm into the center of your eye.
“The New York one?” Tyler asks, waving and smiling as you pass the adoring mass of the crowd chanting his name.
“I only have one sister,” you remind him, “and that is definitely her. Shit, I figured Javi would bring her in eventually.”
“What’s wrong with her?” Boone sets up the streaming on his camera, turning on the lights attached and putting a hand on the door.
“Nothing,” you shake your head, frowning, “Kate is perfect.”
Boone frowns giving your hand a quick squeeze before opening the door with a flourish and starting the stream, leaving you alone to brood in the truck. You count to ten before opening the door and bypassing the crowd to make your way over to the figure standing in the distance before the looming clouds.
“I was wondering when Javi would finally manage to bring you home,” Kate whips around at the sound of your voice, “god only knows he’s the only one you’d make an effort for.”
“Y/N,” Kate reaches a hand out but you withdraw a step back, crossing your arms over your chest. She frowns, your heart twisting at the hurt expression, “I was going to call.” She looks back towards the clouds, “I was going to call you and Mama about getting together while I was home.”
“I’m sure you were,” the bitterness in your voice burns and she clenches her eyes shut before turning back to you, wiping at the moisture that’s gathered. “What are you doing here, Kate?”
“I’m helping Javi,” she takes a step closer, “has he told you about his research? His device can scan an entire tornado from every angle. If we get a full scan we can use the research to help people, save lives.”
You scoff, “Do you even know who you work for?”
“So this must be the infamous, New York Carter,” Tyler comes over and slings an arm around your shoulder, squeezing it, “Boone is looking for you.” He turns you and gives a little push, whispering close to your ear, “Calm down, go take a walk.”
You do as he says, Kate calling your name over your shoulder. Boone is busy streaming so you walk over to the convenience store for a drink. Inside you line up to get a fountain drink and contemplate the choices when someone steps up behind you.
“You know, you don’t have to be so hard on her,” Javi chastises stepping into your space. “It took a lot for her to come out here and chase again.”
“Oh bite me, Javi,” you turn around, glaring. “I have watched everyone coddle Kate our whole life. Kate has always been the perfect child, the perfect student, the perfect friend and girlfriend. And then she goes and almost dies and abandons everyone and you want me to what? Give her a hug and a pat on the head and tell her it’s all fine. It’s not fine, Javi.”
Forgoing the drink, you move to push past him when he grabs your arm, “she’s not the only one who left. Kate isn’t the only one who ran away.”
“I was 19 when she left, Javi,” you grab his hand and move it off your arm, staring him down, “I was 19 and a sophomore at the University of Arkansas studying Meteorology because I only ever wanted to be as great as my sister. And when I came home she was gone and you left for Miami and joined the military. I loved you Javi,” you hate the tears stinging your eyes and he goes deathly still at your words, “But I’ll always be the wrong Carter sister.”
Javi is frozen and you turn and run back towards the red truck, sliding into the backseat and watching as Tyler slides into the front turning the key. “Time to go,” he grabs the walkie and the truck sets off.
“Here we go again folks,” Boone looks around the truck, pointing the camera at you but quickly averting it when he sees the tears streaming down your face. Ben, reaches into his coat pocket, handing you a hankie and you nod, taking it and rubbing at your eyes.
“We got company,” Tyler shouts and Boone swings the camera around to the passenger side door. “What?!” Tyler rolls down the window putting a hand to his ear, “I can’t hear you!”
“Pull this damn truck over!” Javi shouts and you quickly sit up and slide between Tyler and Boone.
“Don’t you dare fucking pull this truck over,” you look between them before glancing at Javi, “Fuck you!”
“You heard the lady!” Tyler rolls up the window with a shout and drives off, kicking up dirt. The truck bumps and groves and you quickly move back into the seat and tug over the harnesses. The tornado gets closer and closer with every passing second and Tyler and Boone cheer as the wind picks up.
“What the fuck?” Tyler looks in his rearview mirror alarmed, “is he out of his goddamn mind?!”
A hand slams against the windshield and you scream, Boone reaching around to open the door and Javi crawling over you, the door slamming shut behind him. “You must be out of your fucking mind!” Boone hollars, zooming in on Javi, his hair windswept and his pristine white shirt soaked.
“Javi, what the hell?!” you hit him, “you scared me half to death.”
“I told you to pull over!” he shouts, the truck rocking back and forth as the tornado closes in.
“And I told you to FUCK OFF,” you sit up straighter, pushing him.
“You also told me you loved me,” he shouts, “and then fucking ran off into a tornado before I could even say anything!”
The truck is silent besides the two of you panting, “then talk,” you cross your arms over your chest, taking a deep breath. The wind outside grows louder until you both have to shout over the howl.
“I DON’T WANT TO BE WITH KATE, SHE’S LIKE A SISTER TO ME!”
“THEN WHY DID YOU LEAVE?! WHY NOT TALK TO ME!”
“BECAUSE I LOVE YOU!” You snap your jaw shut, eyes going wide, “AND EVERYTIME I LOVE SOMETHING, I LOSE IT! MY MOM DIED OF CANCER, MY DAD ABANDONED ME, MY THREE BEST FRIENDS DIED, AND THEN KATE MOVED TO NEW YORK. I COULDN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE. I THOUGHT I WAS PROTECTING YOU,” he sighs, “I THOUGHT I WAS PROTECTING MYSELF.”
The tornado engulfs the vehicle but everyone is silent, watching the two of you. “JAVI,” you shout over the shrieking winds, “I’VE NEVER BEEN KISSED IN A TORNADO BEFORE.”
He smiles, leaning forward quickly pressing his lips to yours and you moan leaning forward to run your hands through his curls. He unbuckles the harness with one hand, the other snaking around your waist to lift you into his lap. You gasp when you feel him hard beneath you and he takes the opportunity to slow down the kiss and tangle his tongue with your own.
The winds die down and the truck stops shaking, the moment interrupted when Ben quickly opens the door and loses the contents of his stomach in the field. Boone cheers and turns the camera pointing it at the two of you, “and that’s what we like to call finding love in a tornado, ladies and gentleman!”

Could you do one where Reader Javi kate and have been friends forever user and kate are so close there like sisters javi has always liked reader but after what happened to there 3 friends he decided to stay quiet but he still loves users and wants to be with them Reader comes back with Kate to help along the way javi finally tells her because he gets jealous of Tyler ( he doesn't want Reader though he wants Kate) and they finally start to date he's very protective of Reader at the end of the movie her and javi move in together
Okay, I think I got what you were saying. Here we go! Thanks so much for the request, Rachel! I tried to fill this request the best I could. Lots of love!
-------------
Always Been you: Javier (TWISTERS) x Reader
Including: Swearing, angst, fluff, broken Spanish.
Not including: smut, the use of y/n.
---------
(First Person: You)
Javi and I are inseparable. Well. Were. Ever since Addy, Praveen, and Jeb died that day, things changed. He enlisted into the army for a few years, and I moved back to Kansas alone. Javi called a few times before I moved, but we hadn't talked all that much. Eventually, he left the army, and moved back to Oklahoma.
Sooner than later, I got a call from him. Enthusiastic, I clicked 'accept' and held my phone to my ear. "Javi!" I enthusiastically exclaim. "Hey, sunshine. I have a question for you." It sounded like he was sorting papers. I myself was making dinner. Microwave dinner.
"Shoot 'em out," I replied, pressing the four on the microwave. "Alright. While I was in the army, they came up with these scanners, we shortened the name to PAR. Anyways, we used them to scan for missiles, and I was wondering if..."
"We used it to scan a storm?" I finished.
"A tornado," Javi corrected. "But these things were huge, so my team and I made these portable units that do the exact same thing. They could help people! But, we haven't been able to track a good enough storm down to do it. So, what do you say? Wanna go storm chasin'?"
--------
After a long while of convincing, he got me to meet him at this gas station in Oklahoma.
I got there, and decided to go in because it was at least a 5 hour drive, and I had only stopped once to go to the bathroom.
I went into the bathroom and washed my hands up before returning to the store part of the station. I looked at the snacks and decided on getting some of my favorite candies and drinks.
Suddenly, I heard a voice behind me. "Hey there, sunshine." I turn around and am face to face with the one and only Javier Rivera. My arms immediately went around him, and he returned the gesture, running a hand through my hair like he always did. I took in a deep breath. He smelled the same. A hint of his Old Spice, and cinnamon. With just a hint of aftershave.
I looked up at him and oh my God, had he changed. His long curly hair was trimmed into a neat cut -but was still curly-, and he looked more...Professional? He was still attractive, if anything the new look made him even more.
"How've you been?" I managed to ask after pulling out of the hug.
"I've been pretty good. Left the army. Joined Storm PAR. Not too big of a change," Javi answered.
"Not big? Javi, you literally changed up in so many ways."
"But for the better, right?" He asked me. "Yeah," I managed to say after a few moments of silence.
He eventually leads me out to his truck with a decal on the back that says "Lion". Inside the passenger seat was none other than...
"Kate!" I exclaimed, running over to her door. She stepped out and gave me the biggest hug. "I've missed you so much!"
Kate smiled, replying, "I missed you too."
Javi, after we caught up, briefed me and Kate on what Storm PAR was and what was going to happen today. While he was explaining how to use the PAR systems, loud music began to play, and trucks and cars and RV's began to pull in.
"Who's that?" I asked, looking as people flooded out of their cars to the main red truck. "That right there," Scott began, pointing out the red truck. "That's Tyler Owens. Self-proclaimed 'Tornado Wrangler'. Hillbilly with a YouTube channel."
I scoffed lightly, watching the blonde climb out of the truck, handing t-shirts out. He was attractive, I'll admit. But he'd never be as attractive as Javi.
I felt Javi's eyes burning holes through the side of my head, so I turned to look at him. "We ready to roll?" I asked.
------------
That chase didn't turn out as expected. Tyler Owens had decided to follow us and ruin the plans, while Kate freaked out, and we abandoned the chase all together. We ended up staying at a hotel -which Tyler and his gang stayed at as well!- Javi, Kate, and I all shared a room.
I sat on the roof of the Storm PAR truck, thinking, before Tyler came over. "So, your friend from New York," He started. "She really from there?"
I snap out of my thoughts, turning to look at Tyler. He's being genuine. "No. She's from Oklahoma," I replied, crossing my arms. "Doesn't surprise me. She doesn't seem like the City Girl type," Tyler replied, taking a sip of his Corona beer.
"Nope."
Silence lingered between us.
"You from the city?"
"Me?"
"Yeah."
"No, I'm actually from Kansas."
"How'd you and City Girl meet?"
"Through college. Majoring in the same thing. I dropped out two weeks before graduation, though."
"Why?"
"It's a long story. I--"
The conversation ceased when Javi came over. "Hey, I need to talk to you." He glanced at Tyler. "Alone."
I get off the roof of the truck and bid farewell to Tyler. Following Javi, I wonder why he wanted to talk to me.
We got into the hotel room, and I sat down on the futon, while he sat on the couch. "So, you and Tyler?" He asked.
"What about him?" I replied.
"You like 'im?" He glared at me from the couch.
"No. Javi, that's ridiculous." I tried to plead.
"I know you do, sunshine. I'm not stupid."
"I don't, Javi! Why, are you jealous?"
That struck a nerve.
"No! It just means I don't have a chance!"
I look at him, confused. "A chance at what?"
"A chance at being with you."
Silence followed that comment.
"God, I've liked you for so long and it's stupid I haven't said anything. And now that Owens-"
"Javi, I don't like Owens. I like you. I always have."
Javi looked at me instead of his twitching thumbs. "Really?" He asked. "Yeah. It's always been you," I replied.
He got up from his seat and sat next to me. He tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear, and pressed his lips to mine. They tasted like salt from the French fries he had earlier. My hand snaked to his hair, before he pulled back.
"Sorry if that was too straightforward, I--"
I pulled him back in for a kiss, shutting him up.
And that's how the rest of the night went.

Series Masterlist
Time didn’t seem to matter anymore. Looking at your phone one morning, you realized it was exactly three weeks since you started this whirlwind trip. Yet, it was sometimes hard to believe. Part of you felt as if you had just arrived, while another part felt like this had always been your life.
The Wranglers—which you were happy to include yourself in now that you bore their tattoo—led such crazy, chaotic lives that every day was some new adventure where you were never quite sure what would happen. Yet you were always having the time of your life! And your nights were just as exciting and heavenly with Tyler in your bed. He was everything you had ever dreamed of in a partner and more. The perfect blend of taking charge and always making sure you were comfortable. Sexy as hell, but caring and sweet as well.
Your life was truly turning into something magical.
However, it’s often when we are floating on cloud nine that the world decides to bring us crashing back down to Earth.
“Sweetheart, you gotta get up.”
You opened your eyes as Tyler continued to shake you. Rolling to look over your shoulder at him, you muttered, “What’s going on?” It was only then that you noticed the loud siren blaring outside. “What’s that sound?”
“Tornado siren,” Tyler said as he grabbed his boxer briefs off the floor and quickly pulled them on. “One just touched down at the end of the street and we gotta get somewhere safe. Now!”
There was an edge in Tyler’s voice you had never heard before, especially not when discussing storms. If he was concerned about it, it must be bad.
Quickly, you slipped off the bed. Luckily you had slipped your panties back on last night when you went to the bathroom and your bra was dangling on the lamp next to the bed but you couldn’t remember where the rest of your clothes had been tossed while Tyler undressed you. Seeing a box of his merch t-shirt in the chair next to you, you grabbed one and pulled it on. It was long enough that it skimmed the middle of your thighs but you really wished you had found your shorts.
Tyler grabbed his keys then your hand, pulling you towards the door. But just as he reached for the handle, the wall-length window beside it exploded inward, sending both you and Tyler flying backwards. The air was knocked out of your lungs as you slammed into the thinly carpeted floor and your head cracked against the corner of the bed frame. Gasping and dazed, you struggled to catch your breath as the air seemed to be sucked out of the room. Hundreds of places on your body stung, and you could just make out various-sized shards of glass sticking out of your arm and chest, causing tiny pinpricks of blood to blossom across your shirt, dyeing the cartoon of Tyler. Based on how the rest of you were feeling, you figured you also had glass lodged in your face, neck, and thighs.
But it was nothing compared to the pain in the back of your head. With every beat of your racing heart, a fresh throb of pain stabbed through your mind. The world around you looked fuzzy and out of focus. When you tried to move, it felt as though you were swimming through molasses, your movements sluggish and heavy, and all you wanted to do was lay there and fall asleep.
Suddenly, Tyler’s face was looming over yours. He too had glass jutting out of his skin, but since he had been slightly protected by the door, it was mostly clustered on the right side of his body. He was screaming something at you but the sound was torn away with the wind. You tried to sit up, but you barely managed to lift your head before collapsing back. Realizing something was wrong, Tyler brushed his fingers against the back of your head—you flinched slightly at the stinging pain it caused—and his eyes grew wide as he pulled them back, the tips stained red.
You flinched as more glass was sucked up from the floor and hurled back at the two of you. More shards buried themselves in your legs, but Tyler’s body crouched over yours blocked most of the glass from hitting you. His face twitched slightly and his jaw clenched as he was pelted by glass and other debris, but all of his focus was on you. Sliding one of his arms carefully under yours while the other supported your head, he managed to lift you to your feet. Then he half-dragged, half-carried you deeper into the room until you reached the closet. Prying the door open against the wind, he eased you gently to the floor before stepping inside himself and letting the door slam shut.
It was dark inside, and with the power off, the faint moonlight that managed to pierce through the storm was nearly non-existent as it drifted in from the slats in the wooden closet door. You felt Tyler reach for you in the darkness and when his hand grasped your arm, he pulled you into his lap. He curled his body around yours, shielding as much of you as he could in case the worst happened. One of his hands hovered protectively over the back of your head where you had hit it earlier, not quite touching your wound but covering it from any debris that might sneak into your hideout.
You buried your face into his bare chest, ignoring the glass sticking out of both of you, and you suddenly realized you were screaming at the top of your lungs. You had no idea how long you had been producing the sobbing shriek—the sound ripped away by the wind—but your throat burned and felt raw even as you continued to wail. Vibrations in Tyler’s chest and throat told you he was trying to say something to you, but over the wind and your screams, you couldn’t hear him.
Just outside the closest, the wind howled and rattled the door, nearly ripping it off its hinges. It felt as if an intruder were trying to force themself in to steal you away and you clung tighter to Tyler even as it drove the glass shards deeper into you. You felt raindrops against your skin as they were hurled through the wooden slats and they mixed with the tears streaming down your face.
For almost three weeks now, you had braved storm after storm tucked safely in Tyler’s truck. Every time felt like going on a roller coaster. Your stomach would float up into your throat, your toes would curl, and you would grab onto Tyler, screaming with joy. You had counted those storms among some of the most exhilarating moments of your life. But now, curled in Tyler’s lap, your stomach still floated into your throat, your bare toes were curled against the thin carpet, and you held onto Tyler for dear life—yet your screams were anything but joyful.
Finally, as he rubbed soothing circles across your back, you heard Tyler whisper, “Shhh… sweetheart, it’s over now. We’re okay, we’re okay. We made it.”
You could hear the wind dying down outside and felt the building settle as it no longer fought against the storm so you knew he was right. Slowly, your screams faded until you were just making a wet gurgling sound deep in your throat. Still, you couldn’t stop shaking.
Tyler tried to get you to look at him, but you couldn’t. All you could do was cling to him and shake, neither of which seemed in your control at the moment. Nothing else in the world mattered but Tyler and you needed him as close to you as possible.
When it became clear you weren’t going to let go, he stood up with you still in his arms. Then he carried you out of the destroyed room, wincing with every step as more glass was driven into his feet. A small part of you in the back of your mind felt horrible seeing him in pain but the rest of your brain was still in shut-down mode.
Once he made it across the room, Tyler carried you down the stairs, avoiding debris and broken concrete along the way. And as he reached the parking lot, you heard a familiar voice call out.
“T!” You could just see Boone rushing towards you out of the corner of your eye. “You guys alright?”
“For the most part.” Boone stumbled to a stop when he saw you shivering in Tyler’s arms but Tyler just kept walking. As Boone fell back into step with him, Tyler asked, “Everyone else okay?”
“Y-Yeah. We crammed into your truck and put the augers down just in case, but it barely touched the parking lot. When you didn’t show up…” Boone’s voice was thick as he trailed off.
Tyler nodded. “We tried getting outta the room but the window shattered. We’ve got glass stuck in us everywhere and she hit her head when we were thrown back. It’s bleeding but I don’t think it’s too bad, slight concussion at worst. But I think she’s gone into shock. Dani, can you get some blankets? I’m gonna put her in your van so I can take a better look at her.”
“On it.”
You hadn’t even realized the rest of the Wranglers had gathered around you until you heard Dani’s voice beside you. Lily placed a gentle hand on your trembling shin but you did not acknowledge it. It was too hard. Everything was too hard. Your head still hurt like crazy, but more than that, you felt like your battery had been completely drained. Even just keeping your eyes open felt like a Herculean task and you could barely grasp what was happening around you for more than a moment before everything drifted away again like smoke on the breeze. The only thing that felt real was Tyler’s heart beating against you.
A moment later, he set you down gently inside Dani and Dexter’s van, positioned so your legs still hung out the door. Kneeling in front of you, he ran his hands carefully over your still-quivering body to see if there were any other injuries he might have missed. When he didn’t find any, he sat back on his heels to look at you.
But you were only vaguely aware of any of this. Your head was hung, staring down at the pavement, looking at Tyler’s bare feet. You felt everything happening, but at the same time, you didn’t, your mind still floating in this strange dissociative space. You saw Tyler kneeling before you out of the corner of your eye, watched his thumb rub circles on your bare knee, yet there was no connection between him and you. It was as if you were watching him tend to someone else while you stood by and watched.
Someone handed him a blanket and he carefully wrapped it around you, pulling it snugly and tucking it in around you so you were cocooned with only your hands free.
Then, in a voice tinted with concern and care, he murmured, “Hey, sweetheart. Can you look at me?”
You didn’t want to. You didn’t want to do anything. You just wanted to slip back into the hazy fog building in your mind and forget everything that was happening. But it was Tyler who was asking you to do this, and you didn’t want to let him down. So, fighting every urge screaming at you, you focused all your willpower and slowly lifted your eyes to meet his.
It was such a small accomplishment, yet Tyler let out a shaky sigh of relief and cupped your face. Voice trembling as a smile stretched across his face, he whispered, “There you are. There’s my brave, beautiful girl. You had me scared there for a minute. But it’s gonna be okay now. You’re safe and we’re gonna take care of you.”
Someone muttered something behind him and he cocked his head to listen. Tyler scrubbed his hand across his face, but it did little to ease the deep lines carved there in the last half hour or so. But he shook his head.
Turning his attention back to you, he signed. “I have to go check on a few things then I’ll be right back. I’ll try to find us some fresh clothes too. That might make you feel a little better.” It was only then that you realized you were still just in your panties and Tyler’s blood-stained merch shirt while he was in nothing but his boxer briefs. Neither one of you had shoes on, a fact that was highlighted by the bloody puddle Tyler was standing in from all the glass cuts on his feet. But he didn’t seem to notice as he stepped closer to you. “Boone and Dex are coming with me, but Lily and Dani are going to stay with you the whole time and help patch you up, okay? And if you really need me before I get back, one of them will get me. Do you think you’ll be alright?”
You nodded, or at least tried to. You still felt disconnected from your body and honestly weren’t sure if your head moved or not. But Tyler must have seen some sign of acknowledgment because he leaned forward and kissed you on the forehead. Then he started to go but only made it a single step before turning back.
Placing his hand on your knee, he said, “Sweetheart, you’ve gotta let go of my hand.” Looking down, you saw your hand still desperately squeezing Tyler’s. With a concentrated effort, you managed to open your fist and Tyler pulled his hand away, massaging it with his other one to get the blood flowing again. Then he gave you a small smile. “I’ll just be a couple of minutes then I’ll be back. I promise.” He shot Dani and Lily a quick look, then disappeared into the crowd that had formed in the parking lot.
Lily sat down on the edge of the van next to you. Gently, she said, "Dani and I want to try to get some of that glass out of you. Would that be okay? It’ll probably sting a little.”
You gave another faint nod, even as you continued to stare at the ground. A moment later, you felt a small pinprick of pain just below your collarbone. Then another on your forehead. And another over your ribs. They didn’t hurt too badly—they felt similar to a mosquito bite—and actually, these slight pinches of pain were helping you come back to yourself. They were grounding you to your body once more. And when Dani pulled a particularly deep piece of glass out of your cheek, you flinched with a slight hiss. She muttered a soft, “I’m sorry” before continuing.
After they had covered about half your body, carefully removing what glass they could with just their fingers, you finally felt a little more yourself. Your trembling had stopped and your body no longer felt as heavy. Running your tongue across your lips to wet them, you thickly mumbled, “It wasn’t like it was in the truck.”
It was the first time you had spoken since the storm broke, the words hoarse and scratchy from all of your screaming. Dani and Lily exchanged looks, before Lily asked, “I’m sorry?”
Slowly, you raised your head to look at her. “This storm. Being in it. It wasn’t like it was when we were in the truck.”
“No, I guess it probably wasn’t. But it’s over now and you’re okay. And Tyler should be back any minute.” Lily glanced over her shoulder, probably hoping to see Tyler walking back towards the van. But then she turned back to you. “Can we get you anything? Some water or something to eat?”
You shook your head. There was something you needed—the deep gnawing ache in your chest that had been there since Tyler left was the constant reminder of that—but you couldn’t find the words to explain what it was. Maybe it would ease when he returned. When he could hold you again and make all of this go away. Yet, you knew it wasn’t as simple as that. Even once Tyler came back, he couldn’t undo what had happened tonight.
Off in the distance, you heard a voice frantically screaming for someone but you couldn’t make out what they were saying. However, as it got closer, you sat up straight and jerked your head around, coming to life as you recognized the voice calling your name. Both Lily and Dani jumped slightly at your sudden movement, and Dani stuck her head out the side of the van. “Scott! She’s over here!”
A moment later, your brother appeared in the doorway, chest heaving, eyes wide, and dark, damp hair—for once not hidden beneath a cap—plastered to his face.
With a sob, you threw the blanket to the side and dove at him. “Scotty!”
You plowed into him, immediately wrapping him in the tightest hug you could manage as the numbness that had consumed you evaporated, leaving you a tearful sobbing mess. Scott stumbled back under the force of your tackle, his body rigid in your embrace. But a moment later, you felt his arms hesitantly wrap around you—lightly at first but soon clinging to you just as tightly as you were to him. You had never hugged your brother like this but as that ache in your chest began to lift, you realized it was what you had needed all along. After everything the two of you had been through and how rocky your relationship had gotten, in the end, what you needed most was your big brother to make things all better.
The two of you remained in your embrace for a long time, both of you relying on the other to keep you on your feet. Then Scott finally pulled away and placed his hands on your shoulders as he looked you over. “When I heard you were here…that there had been casualties…I thought…” He pulled you into another tight hug.
Hugging him back, you sniffed, “Tyler saved me. I didn’t even hear the sirens until he woke me up. Then the window blew when we tried to leave and I hit my head and I…I couldn’t move. I was so scared, Scotty. But then Tyler was there and he got me into the closest and protected me until it was over and he brought me here...and…and…”
You buried your face into his shoulder and began to sob again. Scott rubbed his hand across your back before helping you sit back down in the open back of the van. He gently tried to touch the back of your head but you flinched away. “Sorry,” he muttered as he continued to look you over. “Besides your head, are you okay? I see a lot of blood here.”
“It’s from the glass when their window broke,” Dani interjected. “Both her and Tyler were covered in it. We’ve tried to get as much out as we can but she should probably go somewhere to have a professional make sure it’s all gone.”
“Thank you…both of you.” For once, there was no snark or sarcasm in his tone as Scott addressed the two Wranglers. Placing his hand on top of your head, he asked, “Can I have a minute alone with my sister?”
Dani and Lily exchanged another look, then looked at you. You knew they had promised Tyler not to leave your side, so you nodded to let them know it was okay. They said they’d wait by Tyler’s truck which was farther down in the parking lot while still in view if you needed anything, then they left.
Once he waited long enough for them to get out of earshot, Scott crossed his arms over his chest and raised an eyebrow. “‘The glass from their broken window’, huh? So…you were with Owens.”
For the first time, you realized you were still only wearing Tyler’s merch t-shirt—now filthy with dust and blood—which only just covered your panties. Self-consciously, you grabbed the blanket again and wrapped it around you, trying to cover as much of your bare skin as possible.
“Scotty, I..I—”
But he cut you off by crouching down and placing his hands on your knees. “No, it’s okay. It doesn’t matter. I had no right to tell you you shouldn’t be with him in the first place. And now I’m glad you were together, otherwise I might have lost you.”
Tears filling your eyes once more, you placed your hand on his cheek. “I didn’t know you cared so much.”
“Is it terrible to say neither did I until I thought I was too late?” He dropped his head but you saw a few tears slip out as he squeezed his eyes shut. “I treated you so horribly since you arrived and I thought I didn’t want to have anything to do with you anymore. I was ready to cut you out of my life completely. But the second Javi told me the storm was heading straight for the motel the Wranglers had stopped at for the night, the motel you were only at because you were trying to give me my space…I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared in my life. And I realized at that moment that it’s not that I don’t care, it’s that I was afraid of giving you another chance and finding out you hadn’t changed, that you were that same person you were when we were growing up. And nothing hurts more than being rejected or betrayed by those you love, especially family. But that’s exactly what I did to you. And I’m so sorry.”
Sure, this might all be the situation talking and Scott might not feel the same way tomorrow or a month from now, but as he pulled you into another hug, you didn’t care. You finally felt like you had your brother back.
As you hugged Scott, you saw over his shoulder that Tyler, Boone, and Dexter had joined the two girls by Tyler’s truck. Tyler must have either scavenged some of his clothes from your room or had spares in the truck because he was now wearing a pair of jeans—riding low on his hips due to the lack of his favorite belt and buckle—and tennis shoes, still no shirt. It was the first time you had ever seen him in something other than boots and it felt strange. At least his cowboy hat was settled on his head.
You couldn’t hear what they were talking about. Based on the anxious way Lily had her arms wrapped around herself and Tyler was standing with his hands on his hips as he stared at the ground shaking his head, a deep frown carved into his handsome face, whatever it was it wasn’t a pleasant conversation. Then Tyler lifted his head and looked towards the camper van. His eyes met yours and his frown lifted into a small smile—one that didn’t reach the rest of his face. His green eyes, usually sparkling with life, were now murky and troubled.
He walked over to you just as Scott pulled away, probably hearing someone approaching. Tyler nodded at him and said, “Scott. Do you think I can talk to her for a minute alone? We need to sort some stuff out after…” He gestured to the damaged motel behind him.
Scott nodded. “Yeah. But I’m not leaving my sister. I’ll wait by the front of the van until you’re done.” He started to walk away then paused. “And Ow–Tyler…thank you for protecting her.”
Tyler nodded. “I’m just sorry I couldn’t do a better job.”
Scott nodded again and disappeared in front of the van.
Tyler sighed and turned back to you, just as you sat back down on the edge of the van. “I, uh, I managed to rescue some of our things from the room.” He placed your backpack by your feet. “I wasn’t sure what you might want to change into so I brought it all.”
“Thanks, Ty.”
His face brightened slightly. Hey, I missed your voice. Though it does sound a little rough around the edges. Does it hurt?”
“Yeah, but it’s not too bad. I can’t remember how long I was screaming. By the time I realized I was even doing it, my throat was already sore. I ca-can’t remember a lot of what happened, honestly. Just the wind a-and hitting my head a-a-and…”
You started hyperventilating as you were suddenly back in the room, Tyler’s face looming over yours as the world crumbled around you.
“Shh, it’s okay,” Tyler cooed as he took your face in his hands.
It took a moment, but with him grounding you, you were able to pull yourself back under control. “I’m sorry,” you said, leaning into his touch. “It’s just a lot.”
“Yeah, that’s what I figured.” Sitting down next to you, Tyler hung his head with a sigh. After a moment, lifting his eyes to yours, he said, “Sweetheart, I need you to go home. Tonight.”
“What?” The panic you had felt before when the storm raged through your room gripped your heart once again as you tried to grasp what he was saying.
“You need to leave Oklahoma. Leave all of this.”
No. It didn’t make sense. Tyler was the one who had asked you to stay longer in the first place. Did your breakdown tonight change how he felt about you? “But Tyler, I thought we—”
“I know. And we were. But tonight just proved I can’t keep you safe. We got lucky this time, but I won’t be able to forgive myself if something happens to you because you’re out here with me. So I need you to go.”
For the hundredth time tonight, tears filled your eyes. In a voice barely more than a breath, you whispered, “I thought you cared about me.”
Tyler’s face shattered and he gathered you up into his arms. “Oh, sweetheart, if I didn’t care so much, I wouldn’t be asking you to do this. I haven’t felt like this about someone for a really long time and I don’t want it to end. But—”
You placed your fingers over his lips, refusing to let him finish that sentence. “Then don’t let it end. Let me stay.”
“And tomorrow when another storm passes through, are you gonna be okay with that? Even knowing that if you don’t go on a chase, a storm may still hit where you are and you’ll end up in the middle of it again?” You opened your mouth to answer but the thought of another experience like tonight made the words stick in your throat. Tyler noticed and nodded. “That’s what I thought.”
You hadn’t given thought to tomorrow or the next day or the next. You knew what happened tonight wouldn’t stop Tyler from chasing the next storm the moment one formed, but you also knew that you never wanted to see another tornado as long as you lived. This meant the two of you were now at odds, neither willing nor able to give in for the other—which meant Tyler was right. You needed to go.
Yet knowing that and accepting what that meant were not the same thing. Lip quivering, you asked, “So, what? This is just it? I leave and we never see each other again?”
“We both knew that it had to end at some point. Even if you stayed until the last day of your break, you have to go back to school. And I'm heading back to Arkansas when the season’s over. We're just…we're just saying goodbye a little sooner than expected.”
“I don’t want to say goodbye at all,” you said, your fingers digging into his bare shoulders. “Ty, I need you.”
“You might not feel that way in a day or two,” he said sadly. “This was a traumatic experience for you—don’t say it wasn’t because I won’t ever forget that feeling of you trembling in my arms in that closet or the sounds of your screams knowing there was nothing I could do to help you—and I don’t want you to have to relive it every time you look at me.”
“Tyler Owens, you’re the only reason I’m still alive to do anything. I could never look at you like that.”
“You don’t know that. It kills me to say this, but I’m pretty sure that this isn’t over for you. Not by a long shot. I’ve helped enough survivors of these kinds of things to know the signs. And this is going to stick with you for a very long time. Different people deal with things in different ways, but one way you might deal with it may be separating yourself from any reminders of tonight—including me. And I don’t want to be the reason you’re still in pain.”
“But what if you’re wrong?” you cried. “What if you’re making me leave and I still want you in my life?”
“I’m not making you do anything. If you decide to stay, I won’t stop you. But I think if you really consider what that means, you’ll see leaving is the right choice.” As you nodded with a small sob, he sighed. “Listen, I’m only out here for a few more weeks. If by then you’ve processed everything that’s happened and still want to see me, I’ll be on the first plane to you. But if it’s all too much and you’d rather just move on…” His thumb gently circled a spot on your arm where they had removed one of the larger pieces of glass. “...then I’ll respect it.”
Snuggling your face into the crook of his neck, you mumbled, “I won’t want to move on. I just want you.”
“Then you’ll have me, sweetheart. I promise.” He pressed his lips to your forehead. “But you need to go home until then. Please…for me.”
You took a deep breath, steeling yourself, then nodded. Tyler squeezed you tightly then lifted you off his lap and placed you back onto the van floor. Standing up, he gazed down at you, his eyes damp with tears.
“Scott,” he called out, his eyes never wavering from yours. “Why don’t you take your sister to the hospital to get checked out? Then see about getting her on a flight home tomorrow.”
Scott stepped up to the side of the van. He looked from Tyler to you and asked, “Is that what you want?”
You shook your head, tears streaming down your face. “No…but it’s what’s best for everyone.”
Tyler gave you an encouraging smile, putting his hand on your shoulder and squeezing it, and you leaned your head against his hip, savoring his touch while you still could. Scott’s eyes followed every movement. Nodding softly, he said, “Okay. Let me check in with Javi and fill him in on what’s going on. I’ll meet you by Scarecrow in a few minutes.”
As Scott walked away, Tyler pulled you into him as he folded himself over you. Pressing his lips to your temple, he whispered, “Thank you.” Then he stepped back. “Why don’t you go get changed and I’ll walk you over to Scott when you’re done.”
“Or you could help me,” you whispered, peering up at him from under your eyelashes. “For old time’s sake.”
Tyler glanced over his shoulder and then asked, “Are you sure? I don’t know if you’re up for—”
“Nothing like that,” you said, shaking your head. “I just want to be with you as much as possible. Please, Ty.”
He nodded and helped you stand before you both climbed into the camper van. As he slid the door closed, you rummaged through your backpack and pulled out a pair of shorts and a halter top. With a start, you realized it was the same outfit you had been wearing the day you arrived in Oklahoma. The one you had been wearing when you first met Tyler. It felt strangely perfect so you closed the backpack and turned to show them to Tyler.
Based on the way his eyes softened as they landed on the outfit, he remembered it too. He walked over to you and gathered the bottom of the merch shirt you were wearing in his hands. When you nodded, he carefully lifted it over your head and tossed it to the floor. He inhaled as he saw the cuts that now littered your body from the glass. Gently, he trailed his fingers over a few of them on your arms, then he dropped to his knees in front of you.
As you stood there in nothing but your bra and panties, he grabbed your hips and pulled you close to him. Then he began kissing the cuts across your stomach, starting with the ones just above your panty line. Then he moved up your body, placing a long, lingering kiss on each and every cut. Your eyes fluttered as he reached your breasts—he placed an extra-long kiss on the cut at the top of your cleavage. Then he continues up onto your neck, finally reaching your face.
But as he started to kiss the cuts on your cheeks, you had waited long enough. You grabbed his head and turned it so his lips pressed against yours. Less than three weeks together, and you had been so sure you never wanted to kiss anyone else after Tyler. Yet, here you were about to walk out of his life, possibly forever. How much had changed in a single night.
Tyler finally pulled away, resting his head against yours. Panting slightly, he muttered, “You should get dressed. We better not keep your brother waiting.”
After you were ready, Tyler walked you back to his truck to say goodbye to the rest of the Wranglers. Until that moment, you hadn’t realized that not only might you never see Tyler again, but you might never see the rest of your new friends again either. That fact brought a fresh wave of tears to your eyes.
As Tyler grabbed a shirt out of his backseat, you tried to hold it together as you bid farewell to each Wrangler. You thanked Dani and Lily for everything they had done for you that night. Individually, you thanked Dani for all of her advice and how she always had your back when you were first starting out with Tyler. You gave Lily a huge hug and thank you for your tattoo. Even after what happened, you had no regrets and would treasure it for the rest of your life. You thanked Dexter for taking you on as his food prep helper and for everything he had taken the time to teach you about food, tornados, and just life in general. Boone was the hardest to say goodbye to since you both looked like you were about to burst into tears. But when you pulled him into a hug, you whispered, “Please look out for him for me” to which Boone nodded and hugged you tighter.
Taking one last look at everyone, you waved and promised to keep in touch. Then Tyler—now wearing one of his plaid shirts—placed his hand on your back and led you to Scarecrow. As heartbroken as you already felt, you didn’t know how you would survive what came next.
Scott and Javi were standing next to the passenger’s door when you arrived. You held open your arms and Javi stepped forward into them. You thanked him for running interference this trip and apologized again for any uncomfortable situations you put him in. He said he was glad to have helped and to see that you were okay after tonight’s storm. You saw Tyler shift out of the corner of your eye and you remembered what he said earlier. Hopefully, you really were okay.
When you turned to grab your backpack from Tyler, Javi let out a snort of laughter while Scott made a strangled internal scream. Turning back in confusion, you felt heat rush to your face as you realized your halter top clearly showed off your tattoo. You gave them both a sheepish smile. Javi just nodded, a wide grin spread across his face, while Scott put one hand on his hip while he pinched the bridge of his nose with the other.
Tyler chuckled as he steered you over to your brother. “Sorry we forgot to mention that, Scotty. But since she became a Wrangler, we let her decide if she wanted to make it official.” His eyes met yours. “And once a Wrangler, always a Wrangler. No matter what.”
“No matter what,” you whispered back, staring deep into his eyes.
Scott groaned as he rubbed his temples. “Could you please just get in the fucking truck? I don’t think I can handle any more surprises tonight.”
“Sorry,” both you and Tyler muttered at the same time.
As Tyler helped you climb into Scarecrow, you said one last goodbye to Javi before he walked away and Scott hurried over to the driver’s side. He got in and started the truck, but as your door slammed shut, you motioned for him to put down the window. With a sigh, he did what he was asked.
Reaching out the window, your fingers curled into Tyler’s shirt, afraid if you let go, he would disappear. Holding back your tears, you choked out, “Don’t you fucking dare forget to call.”
Tyler nodded, a soft smile on his lips even as you saw tears glistening in his green eyes. Dipping his head slightly, he murmured, “Yes, ma’am.”
He leaned in the window and pressed a kiss to your forehead, his lips lingering there for a moment. Then he started to pull back, but you wrapped your hand around the back of his neck to stop him as you leaned out the window, your lips crashing into his. If this might be the last time you even saw Tyler Owens, you were going to make it a moment to remember the rest of your life. The kiss wasn’t as passionate or frenzied as some of the ones you shared once you had retreated to your room for the night, but there was a deep desperation there that you felt in your soul. You needed him to know that you didn’t want to leave him. To leave no doubt that you still wanted him despite his fears the trauma of the night would change your mind.
And most of all, you wanted him to feel the sincerity in your next words.
Pulling away slightly, you whispered, “I still don’t regret a second of our time together. Because I love you, Ty.”
Without hesitation, Tyler whispered, “I love you too, sweetheart. And that’s why I need you to do what’s best for you. Even if that means I’m not a part of that life. Promise me.”
“I promise.”
“Thank you.” Taking your hand, he pressed one final kiss to the back of it. “Goodbye, my brave, beautiful girl.”
A tear rolled down your cheek as you said, “Goodbye, my big, bad Tornado Wrangler.”
With a smile and tears in his eyes, Tyler let your hand go and he stepped away from the truck. Before you could change your mind, Scott put the truck in gear and pulled out of the parking lot.
For several miles, you stared out the passenger’s window, silently crying. Scott glanced at you out of the corner of his eye before turning back to look at the road. “You really like him, don’t you?” You nodded. “Damn. I thought it was just your way of messing with me.”
You sighed. “It was…at first. I remembered you had mentioned him and how much you hated his crew so after what you said to me when I first got here, I thought it would be nice to see you squirm watching us together. But as soon as I started getting to know him, everything changed. I’ve never met a man like Tyler Owens before, and I doubt I ever will again.”
“Yeah, well, despite how he saved you tonight, I’m still not happy to find out he’s been shacking up with my little sister,” he mumbled under his breath.
Turning to face him with a chuckle, you asked, “Do you really think Tyler’s the first guy I’ve slept with?”
Scott’s hands tightened around the steering wheel. “It’s not something I like to think about. But no…I remember those times Mom caught you in high school.”
“Oh my god!” you burst out laughing. “I still can’t believe she never once tried to stop us or ban the guys from the house. She would just turn bright red and hurry back out the room then pretend she never saw anything.” The smile that had bloomed across your damp face suddenly deflated. “Yet the one time they found you with that topless cheerleader, they almost kicked you out of the house.” You closed your eyes. “Scotty, I’m so sorry for how they treated you. Or for how they treated me. Or both. It wasn’t fair and you deserved better than that. I’m sorry I didn’t realize that sooner.”
Scott shifted in his seat. “Yeah, well, it wasn’t fair for me to be mad at you for what they did. You didn’t ask to be treated differently and I shouldn’t have blamed you for something you had no control over. Yeah, you didn’t have to be such a spoiled brat all the time, but I probably would have done the same if I were in your position.”
“So…what does this mean? For us?” you asked hesitantly.
“I don’t know.” His eyes shifted over to look at you once more. “But I’m willing to try if you are.”
“I always was.”
The two of you continued to chat on the way to the hospital, reminiscing about your childhoods and, surprisingly, recalling more happy moments together than either of you thought there were. You guessed they had just been blocked by all the pain and resentment that had built up over the years.
And as Scott pulled into the hospital parking lot, you couldn’t help but smile at this parting gift Tyler had given you. He could have easily taken you to the hospital and then to the airport—in fact, you were sure it went against every chivalrous bone in his body not to. But instead, he let Scott take you which had given the two of you the time you needed to finally mend that rift between you.
He had given you your brother back.

The rest of the day passed in a blur and you had little time to think about what Dani had said about Tyler. You had seen plenty of tornados on television before, either in weather reports or movies, but this was the first time you saw one with your own eyes. The crew encountered one fairly big storm in the afternoon and even though everyone else parked some distance away to watch Tyler and Boone do their thing, it was still an exhilarating experience.
Almost immediately, you understood why these other “storm tourists”, as Dani called them, followed the trained chasers around; one look and you were hooked. And the storm seemed just as captivated by you as it tugged at your clothes, almost like a child urging you to come play, while you stood outside the camper van and stared up at the towering wall of wind. You were surprised to see there was no rain and the sun was shining brightly in the surrounding blue sky, almost as if the rest of Mother Nature refused to acknowledge the massive destructive force cutting through the plain. You mentioned it to Dexter but his explanation made your head hurt so you just accepted it and enjoyed the view.
However, as much as the storm captivated you, you couldn’t take your eyes off Tyler’s truck. He tore through the uneven terrain bucking and rearing like he was on the back of one of his bulls, not driving a pickup. And even though you had seen some of his videos and knew what he was planning, your heart still leaped in your chest as the truck disappeared into the tornado. The other Wranglers were gathered around Dexter’s tablet, watching the live feed coming from Boone’s camera, but you couldn’t tear your eyes away from the real thing. At least the sounds of Tyler and Boone hooting and hollering like they were having the time of their life reassured you that everything was alright. But you didn’t realize you were holding your breath until the storm moved, revealing the truck safe and sound, and you let out a loud whoosh of air.
As Tyler and Boone jumped out of the truck, running around and celebrating their successful chase, you felt the butterflies fluttering in your stomach once again. And the feeling only became more intense as you heard Tyler yell on the feed, “Thanks as always to my fabulous crew, and to our newest member who’ll be tagging along for a bit. Next storm—you and me, Sweetheart!”
You bit your lip to keep your smile from consuming your entire face as your toes curled in your boots. However, as you glazed over to see Tyler on the tablet, you caught Dani’s eye and the look of concern on her face instantly sapped all the joy you were feeling. Instead, all the fears you had about your relationship with Tyler came rushing back.
After it became clear you weren’t going to encounter any more tornados for the day, the Wranglers headed to a nearby diner. When you parked, Tyler materialized at the camper door the minute you opened it and offered you his hand. Taking it, you gave him a small smile and let him help you out of the vehicle. He asked you a million questions about what you thought of the storm and his antics with Boone.
As you started walking, trying to find the words to express how incredible the tornado was, you noticed Tyler beginning to stretch out his arm to wrap around your shoulders. Panicking, you dropped your purse on the ground and ducked to pick it up, narrowly avoiding Tyler’s arm. When you stood back up, he gave you a quizzical look but didn’t comment or try to put his arm around you again.
The crew entered the diner and you excused yourself to head to the bathroom. When you returned to the table, you found everyone crammed into one circular booth. Tyler sat on one end, with a decent amount of space available next to him—clearly meant for you—and Lily sat on the very edge of the other end, one half of her butt practically hanging off the edge of the booth. Ignoring the slight nod Tyler gave you to the space next to him, you approached Lily and asked to sit next to her since you hadn’t had much time to get to know her yet.
All eyes shifted to Tyler. He stared at you for a long moment, his eyes searching your face. But then he nodded, pulling the brim of his cowboy hat down low over his face, and slid over to fill the gap next to him. Taking their cue from him, the rest of the crew scooted over and allowed you to fit next to Lily.
The two of you started up a lively conversation, but it took all of your willpower not to look over at Tyler. Only when the waitress arrived to take your order several minutes later did you dare chance a glance. He was staring at you, his green eyes cast in shadow and barely visible under his hat. But even with the obstruction, you noticed he followed your every move: when your hand reached out to give the waitress the menu, when you shifted closer to Lily, when you reached for a napkin to place under your glass of water. But his stares didn’t feel malicious or lewd—they felt confused, seeking answers. You knew to him this cold shoulder must have felt out of nowhere, but you couldn’t risk falling harder for him until you knew what his true intentions were—friendship or potentially something more.
After dinner was over, you rode with Tyler and Boone to the new motel you were staying at for the night. You liked Boone. He was really sweet and the kind of nervous shy where he sought to fill every moment of silence so things didn’t get awkward—which was exactly what you needed riding with Tyler in the truck. You caught him glancing at you in the rearview mirror a few times, but he didn’t say much. Only interjecting a few details or jokes here and there in the middle of Boone’s stories.
Boone also mentioned that while the different teams of storm chasers changed sleeping locations pretty much every night, they tended to all end up at the same places considering they mostly chased the same storms. So it didn’t surprise you to see the group of Storm PAR trucks parked next to the main office when you pulled into the motel. Though, luckily, you didn’t see any sign of your brother.
Once Tyler parked, you tried to follow Boone over to the camper van, but Tyler grabbed your arm. “Hey. Do you mind coming with me to check in?”
Crossing your arms over your chest as you raised an eyebrow, you scoffed, “Since when does it take two people to book a handful of rooms?”
He grinned, some of the tension leaving his shoulders as your playful banter returned. “Sometimes it helps to have a pretty face making the reservations. And it turns out, this one–” he pointed to his face “–doesn’t work on everyone.”
You raised an eyebrow. “Why don’t I believe that?”
As his grin widened and you felt the butterflies beginning to stir, you quickly pivoted and hurried towards the main office. When you didn’t hear anyone behind you, you glanced over your shoulder and asked, “Well? Are you coming? I might have the pretty face, but you have the credit card.”
Tyler’s face had dimmed as you walked away, but the light returned at your words and he jogged after you. As he fell into pace beside you, he didn’t try to take your hand or place his arm across your shoulder like all the times before. And that stung. Even though you knew it was your fault. Even though you knew you kept playing hot and cold with him, the fact he seemed to be finally giving you the space you were clearly showing you wanted, hurt.
The two of you make quick work of the reservations (a sly wink from you at the nervous young man behind the desk saved you 10%). Tyler made sure to get you another room on the second floor. You didn’t mind either way, but he assured you that it was best to be as far above the parking lot as possible since the various teams of storm chasers and storm tourists could get pretty loud in the middle of the night. Considering most nights back home you were lulled to sleep by the sound of helicopters, emergency sirens, and the blend of yelling and pounding music coming through your paper-thin walls, you didn’t think it would be a problem. But you just smiled and thanked him as you took your room key from him.
On your way out, you noticed a soda machine between the main office and one of the Storm PAR trucks. You told Tyler to go ahead and you’d meet him back at the trucks. He hesitated, but when he noticed Lily struggling to wrestle her drone out of her truck, he reluctantly set off alone.
Pulling out a dollar bill from your purse, you tried to put it into the machine but it wouldn’t take it. You sighed as you rubbed the bill on the side of the machine and tried again. Still no luck. Cursing under your breath, you dug through your purse trying to find another dollar crumpled at the bottom.
Just as you were about to give up, a voice said, “Here” and a dollar was thrust in your face.
“Ah, fuck!” you cried, jumping a few inches into the air. But once your heart stopped racing and you realized who it was, you offered a small smile. “Oh, hey. Just a bit of advice, maybe don’t creep up on a girl like that next time.”
Javi chuckled. “Sorry ‘bout that. You just looked like you were having a little trouble.”
“Thanks,” you said, taking the dollar from him. This one was accepted immediately and you pressed the button for a Dr. Pepper. You picked up the bottle when it dropped into the slot, cracked the top open, and took a sip.
“Caffeine this late at night?” Javi shook his head. “You’re just like your brother. I’ve never seen someone drink as much coffee or energy drinks as he does at three in the morning, only to immediately go to sleep. You must take after him or something.”
Your eyes narrowed as you took another sip. “I don’t think that’s the compliment you think it is.”
“No. I guess not.” He ran his hand across the back of his neck as he said, “I didn’t just come over to offer you a dollar. I was actually wondering if we could talk for a minute.”
“Umm…” you looked around the parking lot. Tyler was helping Lily unload her drone from the back of her van, the two deep in conversation, and you didn’t see any sign of your brother anywhere.
Seemingly understanding your concern, Javi said, “Scott’s on a phone call that should keep him busy for a while. That’s why I thought now might be a good time to do this. I figured it was better he didn’t see us talking.”
“Yeah, I wouldn’t want to get you in trouble,” you nodded. “What’s up?”
Javi sighed. “Listen, I don’t know what happened between you and Scott but that conversation you two had yesterday didn’t look good. When he came back, he didn’t say why but he told me that you weren’t staying. So when I saw you last night with Owens, then again with his team today…”
You folded your arms across your chest, your drink still in your hand. “What? You have a problem with me hanging out with the Wranglers too? Scotty already made it very clear last night that he didn’t approve of me spending time with Tyler.”
Javi held up his hands. “It’s not my place to tell you what to do. Just be careful, alright.”
You rolled your eyes. “No offense, Javi, but they’ve been nothing but welcoming and kind to me. I can’t say the same about everyone on your team.”
“I don’t mean it like that. It’s…” He sighed again and scrubbed his hand over his face. Then, taking a deep breath, he continued. “They are good people but they’re also arrogant and overly cocky. They think because they’ve pulled off so many of their boneheaded tricks that they’re pretty much invincible. I just don’t want you to be dragged into it when they find out they’re not.”
Javi may have a point. You had seen enough of the Wranglers’ videos to know they had had more than a few close calls in the past. Yet since they all walked away relatively unharmed, they continued upping the chaos. However, you weren’t going to let Javi talk badly about the people who had welcomed you with open arms, so you said, “You don’t have to worry about that. Despite what Storm PAR may think, the Wranglers know what they’re doing.”
You start to walk away but then paused as another thought crossed your mind. With your back still to Javi, you asked quietly, “You know, it’s been bugging me ever since I met you yesterday. Why did you do it? Why did you partner with him? With Scotty?”
There was a small chuckle in Javi’s voice when he responded. “You mean, why’d I partner with someone who’s half-robot and takes everything way too seriously?”
“That’s one way to put it,” you said, turning back to face him. “I just don’t get it. You seem so different from my brother and I can’t imagine what would have brought the two of you together.”
Javi’s eyes dropped to the dirt, his jaw clenched. For a moment, you weren’t sure he was going to answer, and you wondered what could be so bad that this sweet, kindhearted young man ended up working with Scotty on some supposedly shady business.
When Javi finally spoke, his eyes remained locked on the ground as he crossed his arms over his chest. “I used to be a lot like the Wranglers, actually. I looked at this whole thing as a game, a chance to hang out with my best friends, doing something we loved, and trying to make a difference. We were so sure of what we were doing, we thought we couldn’t possibly fail. But then we did—spectacularly. Three of the closest people in my life died because of it and the fourth…well, she ran away from all of this—from me—because it was too much of a reminder of what happened.”
You closed the distance between you and placed your hand on his arm. “Javi, I’m so sorry. I-I didn’t know.”
He nodded slightly and continued. “I ran away for a while too, joined the army just trying to forget—but you never forget. So, when I came back and decided to give this another shot, I knew I needed to buckle down and remain firmly grounded in what we were doing. And as soon as I met Scott, I could see he would make sure that happened.”
You nodded softly. “So that’s really why you don’t like the Wranglers. They remind you too much of your old team.”
“The Tornado Tamers.” Javi smiled softly, a far-off look in his eyes. “We called ourselves, the Tornado Tamers.” You squeezed his arm and he looked up, the smile still on his face but his eyes less clouded by the past. Clearing his throat, he said, “So I know from experience what can happen out there. I’m not telling you to stay away from them, I just want you to be safe. He may not show it, but I know deep down—deep, deep down—Scott cares about you. And I don’t want him to have the same regrets or guilt I do if something happens.”
You bowed your head as you thought over his words. Finally, you said, “I’m not going to stop riding with them. But I’ll make sure to keep my eyes wide open and if I feel like something’s not safe, I’ll get out of there. Deal?”
“Deal.”
The look on Javi’s face and everything he shared with you still tugged at your heart and you found yourself asking, “Do you think I could give you a hug?”
Javi blinked in surprise but then smiled. “Yeah. I think I’d like that.”
Stepping closer, you wrapped your arms around his neck as his slid around your waist. You had expected it to feel a little strange hugging this virtual stranger, yet somehow, it felt right.
As you squeezed him a little tighter, you whispered, “Thank you for looking out for me, even if he isn’t.”
“He’s trying,” Javi whispered back. “I just don’t think he knows how. But just give him some time. I think he’ll surprise you.”
Biting your lip to keep the tears from tumbling down your face, you nodded. After a moment, the two of you pulled apart, and you were surprised to see Javi’s eyes were misty too.
Giving his hand one last squeeze, you said, “Thanks, Javi. You stay safe out there too.”
He smiled and squeezed your hand back. “I’ll try my best. See you around.”
“See you.”
Walking across the parking lot, wiping your eyes, you looked up to see Tyler once again staring at you. You stumbled slightly in surprise. How much of that had he seen? Was he mad you were fraternizing with “the enemy”?
But then he walked towards you, flashing you a smile, and you felt some of the tension ease in your chest. As he reached you, he held out your backpack you hadn’t even noticed he was carrying. Taking it from him, you said, “Thanks. But why do I need this?”
“Everyone else is just finishing up for the night so I thought now might be a good time to get you settled into your room.”
“Oh.” It seemed a little strange that you weren’t going to tell anyone else goodnight before turning in, but you also didn’t want to bother them if they were busy with their equipment. “Okay, I’m fine with that.”
“May I walk you to your room?” Tyler asked. You floundered for a moment, trying to think of a reason why he shouldn’t. When he saw your hesitation, he added, “I think we need to talk.”
This was the moment you had both been dreading and looking forward to. Right now, from your point of view, you and Tyler had the Schrödinger’s Cat of relationships: you could be friends, you could be more, but until that box was opened, you couldn’t be sure which it was. And right now, you could still try to pretend it could be more. But if you asked and he told you differently…
So, you nodded. “Yeah. Let’s go.”
Tyler took your backpack back from you and the two of you headed to the stairs in silence. With each step, the air between you grew thicker as the weight of so many unsaid things bore down on you. You tried to keep your breathing as level as possible, but it felt as if your heart would pound out of your chest at any moment.
Finally, as you reached the top of the stairs, Tyler broke the silence. “Are you okay?”
That was not what you expected him to ask you. Blinking, you said, “Yeah. Why do you ask?”
He tipped the brim of his hat up slightly so he could see you better. “I don’t know. You just seem a bit…off since this morning. Did something happen when you were with Dani and Dexter? I know they can be a lot when they get going, but—”
“No, Tyler, nothing happened.” You stopped walking and placed your hand on his arm. “Like I said on the radio, I really enjoyed riding with them. It’s just…I think I got so caught up in how nice you’ve all been that I forgot this isn’t my life. I’m not a Wrangler. I’m a college student with an asshole brother. That’s the only reason I’m hanging out with you guys.”
You started walking again, but this time it was Tyler who reached out and grabbed your arm, his fingers digging into your biceps as if he were afraid you’d slip away. “Is it?”
“Is it what?”
Staring at the ground, he ran his free hand over the back of his neck as he said, “Listen, the reason that you’re doing this doesn’t change anything. We’re still more than happy to let you ride with us either way, but I have to know for my own peace of mind.” He lifted his head so his green eyes bore into yours. There was an uncertainty there that echoed the one you had been feeling all afternoon and you held your breath as he asked, “Are you still hanging out with us just to get back at Scott or are you here now because you want to be?”
Your heart fluttered in your chest. Just like the uncertainty in his eyes, the fear and nervousness in his voice mirrored how you felt earlier in the van when Dani made you question Tyler’s intentions. Could that mean…was Dani wrong and Tyler wasn’t acting the same way around you as he did with everyone?
Tapping your chin as you pretended to consider the question, you said, “I do get a little twinge of satisfaction whenever I see Scott glaring at us together—” your expression softens “—but no, that’s not what I’m still doing here. I like you, Tyler. A lot. You and your entire team. You all have been nothing but accepting of me barging into your lives and I really appreciate it.” He nodded, a smile tugging at one corner of his mouth, yet he still seemed hesitant. “Is there something else?”
He shook his head and then reconsidered. “Um, I saw you and Javi just now. It seemed like maybe you had decided he would be better at making Scott jealous. For a minute there, I thought you might leave us.”
“That thing with Javi…he just told me some really heavy stuff about his past and why he’s working with Scotty. That’s all. You’re not getting rid of me that easily.” Taking his hand, you added, “But if you ever change your mind or think I’m just using you, say the word and I’ll go.”
“No.” The single word burst from his mouth immediately, seemingly surprising both of you with its conviction. Tyler cleared his throat and shifted his weight to his other foot. “No, um, listen, I’m not trying to run you off or anything like that. I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page. I–We like having you around and, uh, Boone was real excited to take you into a storm tomorrow.”
You smiled as you took a step closer to him. “Oh, Boone was, was he?” A slight redness began creeping up Tyler’s neck as he looked at the ground so you took pity on him. “Well, I can’t let Boone down, can I? Not after everything he’s done and how wonderfully he’s treated me since the moment we met. It’s the least I can do.”
The last words slipped from your lips as barely more than a whisper. This close to Tyler, that magnetic pull from the night before returned as you smelled a faint trace of the earthy cleanliness of his skin. And you couldn’t pull your eyes from his lips as his tongue ran slowly across them.
Tyler’s eyes darkened as he stared down at you. He reached out and cupped your cheek in his hand as he murmured, “He’ll be glad to hear it.”
He began to lean into you, forcing you backwards, and just as you thought he might press his lips against yours—your back jammed into the door handle of one of the rooms.
“Ah!”
You jumped forward, slipping out of Tyler’s grasp, and rubbed your back. He glanced between you and the door then back again. Sheepishly, he muttered, “Sorry about that.”
“No, it’s alright. I just didn’t realize—” you stared at the door number, your jaw hanging open slightly “—that this is my room.”
“Really?” Tyler looked at the key card in your hand. “Huh. Then I guess this is where we say goodnight?”
There was a slight question in his tone, but he made no move to stop you as you opened the motel door. You stepped inside and waited for him to make the next move.
For what seemed like a lifetime, neither one of you moved. You seemed to barely breathe. Then, Tyler reached out and took your hand just as he had the night before. However, this time when he pressed his lips to the back of it, they pressed harder, no longer just a faint brush but a deep caress. And as they lingered there, you wondered it would have felt like if he had kissed your lips instead of your hand: how the slight stubble on his face would feel scratching tantalizingly across your skin; what he might taste like on your tongue; the way he would press himself against you, his leg slipping between yours—
Abruptly, he straightened, letting your hand drop to your side, shaking you from your fantasy. Without a word, he gave you a sharp nod before turning and hurrying down the corridor towards the stairs. In just a few seconds, he was gone.
Still shaken by everything that had happened in the last few minutes, you stumbled further into your room and shut the door.
Tonight might not have gone as you expected, but one thing was now clear. He felt it too. That growing connection between you wasn’t one-sided. Whatever it was, it was more than friendship. If only that fucking door hadn’t gotten in the way!
Yet, this wasn’t all the door’s fault either. You gave Tyler the opportunity to try to make another move but he didn’t. He kissed your hand—albeit sensually, as if from a 1800’s romance novel—but then he walked away! What a fucking tease!
Well, two could play at that game…
The next morning, you threw all of your stuff into your backpack and hurried out of the room before Tyler could come up to meet you. Taking the stairs two at a time, you made it to the ground floor and rushed over to where the Wranglers were parked. On your way, you caught a glance of Scott out of the corner of your eye glaring at you from the other end of the parking lot, but you ignored him and continued on.
As you neared your destination, Tyler noticed you approaching from under the brim of his cowboy hat and put down the equipment he was loading into the back of his truck. Removing his sunglasses and slipping them onto the collar of his shirt, he walked towards you with his arms open.
“Someone’s ready early this morning. I was just about to come up to walk you dow–”
“Yeah, thanks,” you said, shoving your backpack into his arms but never wavering as you continued forward. You just had time to register the shocked bewilderment on Tyler’s face before walking past him.
While the other Wranglers scurried around packing up their vehicles, you waltzed over to where Boone was talking to Lily and tackled him into a huge hug. He froze underneath your embrace, tripping over his words as he tried to grasp what was going on. Squeezing him tighter, you gushed loudly about how you were just as excited as he was that you were riding with him and Tyler into the storm today. Then you pulled away without explanation and headed over to where Dexter was handing out breakfast, pausing briefly to shoot Tyler an innocent smile over your shoulder. Still holding your backpack in his arms, you saw his lips were now curled into a knowing smirk and his usual playfulness had returned to his eyes. He shook his head and you shot him a quick wink.
Just as you began to turn away and take the plate of eggs and bacon Dexter was offering you, you saw Boone walk over to Tyler, scratching his head as he muttered, “I think the new girl’s in love with me.”

Can't Take the Home out of Oklahoma (Javi Rivera x F! Reader)
A/N: Thank you to everyone that read We Found Love in a Tornado, this is a continuation of that. I also have another part already written and ready to post! I also recommend listening to Out of Oklahoma by Lainey Wilson while reading this. I had it on repeat the whole time I wrote it.
Pairing: Javi Rivera x F! Reader (Kate's Sister) *No physical descriptions besides mentioning younger sister.
Warnings: 18 + Language, angst, some sexual situations (no smut..yet), and movie spoilers.
“I lost three of my best friends so you could get your big grant money!” Javi shouts at Kate and she takes a step back like he’d struck her. His hands are still shaking as he replays the words over and over like a broken record. “Shit, Kate, I-”
Kate pushes past you and runs towards the white truck and you don’t hesitate to follow. “Baby,” Javi follows close behind running to keep up, “no, please don’t go.”
“No Javi,” you stop holding up your hands, “that was too far, give her some space.”
He freezes, tears tracking through the dirt staining his cheeks. But you leave, climbing in the passenger seat beside your sister and taking off into the night. Kate is silent, her knuckles bright white with how hard she is clenching the wheel and you slip off your boots and lean back closing your eyes.
“You don’t have to go with me, you know,” she whispers, her eyes still on the road.
You sit up slowly opening your eyes. “I’m not letting you go again,” you reach a hand out and leave it outstretched before her own holds on tight across the center console. “We Carter girls got to stay together. Let me know when we get there.”
Kate huffs out a broken laugh, “And where are we going?”
“You can’t take the home out of Oklahoma, Katie, you’ll know when you get there,” she squeezes your hand but doesn’t let go and you lean back closing your eyes.
Several hours pass before the truck slows down and you blink away the sleep, the old farmhouse a friendly site. You sit up, look at Kate with a small smile, and follow her out of the truck, finding the spare key and entering the house.
Everything is as you left it and you quickly find two glasses and fill them with water from the jug in the fridge. “Mama, it’s us,” Katie calls when a shadow moves in the doorway, her arms opening for us.
“My girls,” she embraces us and presses a kiss to our head, before looking at our disheveled appearance and the blood drying on Kate’s cheek. “What happened to you?”
“Nothing,” Kate shakes her head, “we just needed to come home.”
“You go take a shower, I’ll get you some extra clothes and clean up the bedroom,” Mama hurries towards the stairs.
“You shower first,” you hold Kate’s hand and follow mom up the stairs, “you stink.” Kate smiles sadly before giving you a playful shove.
“If I knew you girls were coming, I would have had the room all set up,” Mama tosses shirts and magazines into a box before putting it on the bed with a sigh. “What happened out there?”
“We survived an EF4,” she covers her mouth, “barely to be honest. If it weren’t for Kate we’d probably be dead. Javi and Tyler covered us from the brunt of the damage.”
“Javi? He came by a few months ago looking for you two. And isn’t Tyler your boss?”
“Yeah, he is. He’s a really great guy, and absolutely losing his mind over Kate.”
“No, he is not,” Kate blushes coming into the room and ringing out her hair with the towel, “we’re just acquaintances. If you want to talk about someone losing their mind it’s Javi! He ran into a Tornado and confessed his love for you live on camera.”
“He did what now?” Mama looks between you two, before crossing her arms with a smirk, “I am going to have to see this video.”
“Tomorrow,” you tell her, “I promise you can see the video tomorrow. Tonight he’s on my shit list.” You walk away towards the shower, stripping off your clothes.
“Uh oh,” Mama calls, “trouble in paradise?”
“You tell her,” you shout at Kate before getting in the shower and washing off the dirt and grime from the day. When you emerge Mama is gone and Kate is snuggled under the covers of the queen size bed of her former bedroom.
“Do you need anything?” you ask her, tugging on the clothes Mama left at the end of the bed. Kate doesn’t say anything, just pulls back the cover with a raised brow. You don’t hesitate crawling into the bed beside her and flicking out the light. “You okay?” you whisper, turning to face her.
“No,” she shakes her head, “Javi was right. They died because I got it wrong. I killed them.”
You reach over and pull her into your arms, letting her cry against your chest, her arms wrapped tight around your waist. “Listen to me, Katie,” you whisper when her cries slow, brushing her hair out of her face, “it was a horrible tragedy. And there is nothing you did that could change that. That storm took everything from you, when are you going to stop letting it?”
Kate is quiet contemplating your words and eventually sleep claims you both. Two sisters, holding on to one another, weathering the storm.
The next morning comes too soon, the sun streaming through the window and the roosters crowing at the first break of daylight. Mama moves around the house and the scent of coffee floats up the stairs, and you crawl out from under Kate and slip silently down the stairs.
“I LOVE YOU!” you hear Javi shout from the kitchen and come around the corner to see Mama sitting at the table with her laptop and a cup of coffee. A hand pressed to her mouth as she watches the moment Javi literally ran through a storm to follow you.
She presses the keyboard and looks up at you, “that’s got to be the most damn romantic thing I’ve ever seen. And I watch alot of hallmark movies.”
You snort, “thanks, mama. I feel pretty lucky to be on the same level as hallmark.” The coffee is fresh and you prepare the cup and bring it over to the table, “I wish we could just live in that moment.”
“Why? Is he not treating you right?”
“No, he is. And I do really love him, but he hurt Katie. And his company Storm Par while built with good intentions are taking advantage of people’s tragedy.”
“Sounds like something you need to talk about with him,” she sips her coffee and reaches a hand out to hold your own. “Javi is a good man, he’s really grown since he first came around here. And I can tell by that video that he really loves you. You’ll figure everything out.” Mama rises, kissing the top of your head before walking out the front door to muck and feed the cows.
You sit there, drinking another two cups of coffee before Kate stumbles down the stairs dressed for the day. You switch places, giving her a cup before climbing back up the stairs to get dressed. When you’re finished you follow her out to the barn and sit back watching her go through the memories and the grief that follows.
Neither of you notice the sound of a truck pulling up until the barn door opens and Tyler and Javi walk through the door followed by our smirking mama. “Seems like you two have some guests,” she looks between the four of you, seeing the variety of expressions. “I’m gonna make some lunch, the boys are staying.” She doesn’t ask, retreating to leave the four of you in silence.
Kate sighs rubbing her head, “what are you doing here?”
“Javi here gave me your address, Dex remembered your name from an article a few years back,” Tyler steps toward her, “I’m real sorry about your friends.”
“And I was an asshole,” Javi's voice cracks, “I should never have said that, Kate. I hope you’ll be able to forgive me.”
“There’s nothing to forgive, it’s the truth. I killed them,” Kate lowers her head fidgeting with her fingers, “but-I am tired of letting that storm take anything else away from me.”
“Can we have a moment?” Javi looks between you and Tyler, and you look to Kate who nods at you. You follow Tyler out of the barn but not before Javi reaches for your arm and pulls you into his chest, snaking his arms around your waist. “When I’m done here don’t think you’re getting away with leaving me again.”
You nod, squeezing him tight before following behind and closing the barn door. Mama stands against the fence acting like she hasn’t been listening the whole time and you laugh.
“That fence seems real interesting mama,” you tease giving her a hug from behind.
“Tyler,” she turns, wrapping you up in her arms, “you’ve been taking my baby into Tornados for two years and we haven’t met, how is that possible?”
“I’m not sure ma’am but I think you may be seeing a lot more of me.” Tyler looks back at the barn doors before turning back around, “hopefully.”
“Why don’t you stay the night? We have plenty of extra space.” Mama holds you tight as you go to protest, effectively shutting you up. “I insist, both you and Javi can spend the night.”
Tyler beams, “thank you ma’am, sounds like a wonderful offer.”
“Perfect, I’ll go make some lunch!”
Tyler waits a moment before chuckling at the embarrassed expression on your face. “She seems real friendly,” he teases.
“Nosey is more like it,” you grumble before cracking a smile, “but she means well.”
“How are you holding up?” He asks, leaning on the fence beside you, “that was one hell of a twister.”
“I think the twister was rather mild compared to the rage I felt when Javi yelled at Kate.”
Tyler lifts a brow, “you’ve kinda jumped ship with everything regarding your sister. I remember a few days ago you being so angry to see her.”
“That was before I knew, before I really understood…how broken she is.” You glance up to see Tyler already looking at you, “my sister lost everyone she cared about. I remember thinking Jeb was the one she was going to marry someday. They loved each other so much.”
You sit there silent before the creaking of the barn door has you standing up straight, Javi making a beeline to you. “She’s all yours,” Javi tells Tyler, clapping him on the back as the other man all but runs into the barn.
Javi stands before you, your arms crossed over your chest and a frown on your face. “Baby-“ he starts before you step forward and shove him, hard.
“That’s for what you said to Kate,” you feel the tears burn, shoving him again, “and that’s for being an asshole.”
“I deserve that,” he says quietly, resigned. “You done pushing me, baby?” You nod, brushing the tears off your cheeks and he holds up his hands, “can I hold you?”
“Yes,” he doesn’t hesitate for a second.
His arms are warm and you can feel the muscles as he tugs you into his chest, your head landing in the crook of his neck. “I’m so sorry,” he whispers, pressing kisses to your head, “I’m so sorry for saying that. I-I was just angry and hurt and scared and I took it out on you and Kate.”
“I was scared too, Javi,” you hold him tighter, “I almost had you ripped away from me, literally. We almost died in that pool, all of us. And then the second we get out, Scott is there trying to make money off of that motel owner. I just lost my mind.”
“I know,” he rests his head against you, “I got to figure a way out of this. I really needed the money for the start up, but not like this.”
“We’ll figure it out,” he pulls back to look down at you.
“We?” he smiles.
“Yes, we. You’re not getting rid of me that easily.”
“I don’t know about that. I was unprepared for how much it would hurt to see my whole life drive off in my truck.”
You cringe, “sorry about that. We did kind of leave you stranded.”
“You had every reason,” he shakes his head pulling you back into his chest, “I was a major asshole.”
“Yeah,” you chuckle, “you were.”
He laughs, tickling your side, “hey! I said I was sorry.”
You squirm trying to move away but he holds you tighter, both of you laughing, the stress from the last 48 hours melting in his arms. “I forgive you.” He sags in relief, before leaning down to press a kiss to your lips, your arms winding around his neck. The kiss turning more passionate with every second.
“That is going to take some getting used too,” you jump apart with a yelp. Kate and Tyler standing in the doorway to the barn. “My best friend and my baby sister, gross.”
“Oh hush,” you chastise teasingly, “imagine how I feel with my boss making goo goo eyes at my older sister, talk about gross.”
“I do not make goo goo eyes,” Tyler puts his hands on his hips.
“But you don’t deny you have feelings for her?” you challenge matching his stance.
“Well I- “ Tyler shakes his head before sighing, “I can’t argue with you there.”
Kate looks at him with wide eyes and opens her mouth to respond when Mama shouts from the front porch, “lunch is ready!”
The conversation burns in their eyes and you look at Javi with a grin, pulling him towards the kitchen to help bring out the food.
Mama has outdone herself, bringing out a plethora of bbq and sides for us to devour. The sweet tea flows and everyone smiles as they dig into the food.
“So Javi,” Mama passes me the coleslaw, “what are your intentions with my youngest?”
Javi chokes on his tea and you frantically pat his back and glare at your mama. He clears his throat, catching his breath and taking your hand, “Excuse me ma’am you caught me by surprise.” Mama grins, not looking the least bit sorry for almost killing your boyfriend. “I love her. I’m going to do my best to never let her forget that for the rest of her life. And in the future, if she’ll have me,” he meets your eyes, giving you a wink, “she’ll let me become Mr. Carter.”
“Good,” Mama smiles, “and you,” she turns to Tyler.
Tyler never falters, his smile in place as he looks at Kate, “maybe I can convince Kate to give me a second date. Since the first one was interrupted.”
“That was not a date,” Kate argues.
“Okay,” he nods, “then a first date. We can start there.”
“How about you go tonight?” Mama smiles, looking at the four of you, “take her line dancing.”
“Mama,” Kate chastises, “I’m not ready.”
“No time like the present, Katie,” Mama stands lifting the plates and walking towards the house.
“We don’t have too,” Tyler places a gentle hand on her arm, “I just want to spend some time with you.”
Kate looks at him grateful, “thank you.”
“What about you?” Javi looks at you with a smile, “want to go line dancing?”
“You want to go line dancing?” Your brows reach the ceiling as you look at him.
“Or,” he looks at Kate and Tyler, “how about we dance here?” He stands holding out his hand, “milady?”
“There’s no music,” you stay seated looking for your sister for backup.
“I got it,” Tyler pulls his phone from his pocket and pulls up the Spotify app. “Here we go,” he turns up the volume, Ain’t in Kansas Anymore by Miranda Lambert blaring out of the small speakers.
“Come on baby,” Javi moves his hips back and forth and you stay in your spot watching him with wide eyes. “Tyler buddy, come help me out!”
Tyler jumps up with a cheer and as the chorus breaks they start dancing, their fingers in the air as they twirl their finger in Tyler’s signature move. Kate laughs beside you, quickly covering her mouth as they move to the beat, spinning to give you their backs.
“Come on girls,” Mama shocks you both, whipping around, “live a little.”
“Shit,” Kate looks at you with a shrug, both of you scrambling to your feet to dance beside them. The four of you laugh through several songs, trying to keep up with the steps, Javi breaking off to pull you into his arms for a slow dance. Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson serenading you to Save Me.
You rest your head on his chest as he sways you to the music. Kate and Tyler move closer together and he holds one of her hands and wraps the other around her waist. They’re stiff at first before Tyler flashes her a smile and she melts into his arms.
“I meant every word,” Javi whispers and you lift your head to look at him, hands pressed to his chest and his hands low on your hips. “I love you, baby. And I’m gonna spend the rest of my life trying to prove it to you.”
“When did you know?” his eyes soften as he thinks back.
“When you came and tapped me out.”
“That long?” You shake your head, “we’ve wasted so much time.”
“What about you?”
“After the EF5,” you close your arms and lean against his chest, “I just remember running into the hospital and seeing you standing there. And my heart stopped.” His hands run comfortingly on your back, “I’ve never been so scared in my entire life.”
“I know,” he tightens his arms around you, “I felt so numb to everything and then you come barreling into me. Almost took me to the ground,” he chuckles, “I should have realized it then.” He shakes his head, “I’m sorry it took me so long.”
“We both made mistakes,” you open your eyes and pull back, “the main thing now is that we’re together and nothing is gonna tear us apart.”
He leans down and kisses you, wrapping his arms around your waist. The music fades and for a moment nothing exists besides the two of you. His lips are warm and soft and he groans tugging you closer till you’re flush against each other. His tongue moves out to flick against your lips and you open your mouth on a moan tugging his curls between your fingers.
“Javi,” you whimper, feeling him hard against you and leaving you dripping.
When you come up for air you notice the music gone and so are Tyler and Kate. “Do you wanna move this inside?” he whispers against your lips.
“God yes,” you sigh, “but I would rather the first time we have sex not be in my childhood bedroom.”
He chuckles, his voice deep and raspy, “understood. But,” he leans down lowering his voice to whisper in your ear, “but I am going to make love to you baby, and soon. I’m gonna taste every inch of this body and have you shaking beneath me, till I make you cum so hard you see stars.”
“Fuck, Javi,” you grind against him, your panties drenched, “you can’t say shit like that to me.”
He chuckles holding your hips and pushing you back a step, “down girl,” he teases, “you’re trying to climb me like a tree.” He laughs when you pout, “you’re the one that didn’t wanna have sex in your childhood bedroom. You worried Justin Timberlake would be jealous?”
“Don’t insult Justin,” you glare, “he’s been with me a long time.”
He holds up his hands in surrender with a smile, “okay, I’m sorry. I’ll never speak ill of Justin again.”
“You better not,” you warn playfully, “or there could be trouble.”
He reaches for you, putting an arm around your shoulders and leading you into the house. When you’re outside Kates room he gives you a soft kiss, his lips lingering for a moment before he whispers, “love you,” against your lips before going into the room, mama set up for him earlier.
“I love you,” you whisper back, going into the room and closing the door quietly behind you.
“I thought you’d spend the night with him,” Kate says softly from the bed, “I wouldn’t blame you.”
You quickly change into your pajamas before crawling into bed beside Kate and pulling her into your arms, “I’m happy right here.”
Kate feels tense, her shoulders tight, “Tyler wants me to try again,” she whispers into the darkness. “He found my research and wants me to try again to tame a tornado.”
“And what do you want to do?”
“I want their death to mean something,” your shirt dampens from her tears and you rub her back. “I want to try again but I’m-“ her voice cracks, “I’m so scared of getting it wrong again.”
“Only you can decide Katie,” you give her a squeeze, “but I can guarantee one variable that’s different this time.”
“What’s that?”
“Tyler Owens. He is the tornado wrangler, and heaven help anything that tries to take you away from him. Trust him, he won’t let you down.”
Kate contemplates, her shoulders dropping as she melts into you and it only takes a moment for her to breathe to even out. You sit there and wonder how long it’s been since she slept so peacefully, and you tug her closer before falling asleep.

Twisters Masterlist
The next morning the rain beats against the window and you rub the sleep from your eyes, noticing the lack of Kate right away. You sit up and go towards the window, a smile breaking across your face at Tyler grinning in his truck down at your rain soaked sister. “That’s my girl,” you praise quietly wrapping your arms around your waist.
A knock sounds at the door behind you and you softly tell them to come in, smiling when Javi comes up behind you and wraps his arms around your waist, his chin resting on your shoulder. “She’s gonna be okay,” he mumbles, pressing his cheek to yours.
“She’s gonna be just fine,” you agree, smiling as Tyler turns off the truck and runs after Kate into the barn.
“What do you think of me in that look?” Javi nods his head towards Tyler, “cowboy hat, boots, big belt buckle.”
You giggle, leaning back into his chest, “maybe for role play,” you feel his hand drift lower, “but you want the truth?” He leans closer and you bite softly on his ear, “I love you just the way you are.”
“Mamacita you’re killing me,” he groans, mumbling Spanish in your ear as he licks and bites your neck, leaving behind any trace he can manage.
You close your eyes, tilting your head to the side to give him more access he sucks on the skin of your neck, moaning when you tilt your head back and grind against him. He turns you around and his eyes are dark, licking his lips, he drops to his knees kissing along your stomach, pulling up the shirt.
“Just one little taste, baby please,” he begs.
You’re about to agree when his phone starts shrieking from his pocket. He groans, dropping his head against your belly and reaching for his phone, cursing when he sees who it is. “Scott,” he pressed the phone to his ear, “what is it?”
You run your fingers through his hair and he presses kisses to your skin, listening to Scott complain. “I got it,” he snaps, “listen, come get me and we will go.” He listens for a moment longer, “I said I’ll go, what more do you want from me?!”
Scott shouts and you cringe, Javi’s posture changing till he’s sitting up straight, clenching his fist. Words like pussy-whipped and losing it all over some girl coming clearly through the line.
Javi’s pissed, his voice low and angry, and you can’t help but be a little turned on listening to him defend you. “Listen, don’t ever talk about my woman that way again. You hear me? Now I’ll text you the address and you come get me and we’ll go.” Javi snaps the phone shut and tosses it on the bed. “What an asshole.”
“He really is,” you nod agreeing. He takes a moment to look at you and then grabs the phone texting the address. He waits for the chime and sighs, “he’s gonna be here in 45 minutes.”
“We should probably shower and get changed,” he stands nodding, both of you disappointed about the ruined opportunity for intimacy. Javi turns to leave when you say the words that have him frozen, “you wanna join me?”
He turns a smile breaking out across his face, “yes ma’am,”
A quick shower turned into ten minutes, Mama banging on the door about wasting the hot water. And you feel bad because honestly you feel dirtier than when you went in and the award for that goes to the smug looking man, struggling to contain his laugh.
“Shut up,” you hissed, covering his mouth, shouting, “sorry Mama! I’ll be right out.”
“Make me,” he kisses his way up your arm and tugs you into his arms, the towel sliding down, when the knock sounds again.
Mama uses your full name and you stand up, quickly covering yourself, “is Javi in there with you?!”
“Oh god,” you groan covering your eyes, “this is mortifying.”
“Oh my boy Javi is getting some,” Tyler shouts through the doorway.
“Tyler!” Kate shrieks, hitting him, “let’s go and give them some privacy. Javi, Scott’s here.”
“Okay, thanks Kate!” he shouts back and you yelp covering his mouth as he laughs tugging your hand down, “baby, relax the whole house already knows I’m in here.”
You both quickly get dressed and Javi gives mama a big hug before taking your hand and going out the front door. “Fucking finally,” Scott huffs, “we got to move. I’m tracking a large cell to the east.”
“I’ll be there in a minute, go get in the truck,” Javi instructs, Scott sighing loudly but doing what he’s told. “Such an asshole,” Javi chuckles wrapping his arms around you, “you sure I can’t convince you to switch sides?”
“I’m sorry Javi, but I’m a wrangler. And I can’t work for Storm Par, not while Riggs is still there.”
He nods, leaning down to give you a kiss, “I respect that. But I’m gonna remember you said not while Riggs is there. That gives me hope once he’s gone that you’ll join the team. We can even rebrand,” he holds his hands out like he’s reading a sign, “Rivera-Carter Storm Par.”
You cringe and he laughs, “okay we’ll work on the title.”
“I love you,” you fix his collar, pulling him down for a kiss that lingers a few moments, both of you breaking apart and glaring when Scott lays down the horn. “Asshole,” you stick your tongue out and he flips you off. Javi laughed before turning back to you, “be safe.”
He softens his smile, nodding, “I should be the one telling you that. You’re the one who drives into the path of tornados.
“Well that’s because we are professional,” you lift your finger twirling it in the air, “tornado wranglers.”
Javi pulls you closer, kissing you one last time, “be safe baby. I’m gonna make everything right. I promise you. I’ll see you soon. I love you.”
“I love you too, Javi,” you let him go with one last kiss and see him unlock the truck you and Kate made a mad dash away with as he pulls out and follows Scott. You stand there till the truck becomes a blip in the distance.
Tyler’s boot crunch under the gravel as he comes to stand beside you. “Are you coming with us?”
“Yeah,” you nod, watching the other half of your soul fade from view, “yeah I’m coming.”
“We need a big trailer, light enough to tow with a truck but heavy enough to withstand over 100 mph winds,” Dani explains and you fall into step beside Boone.
“And what do you need this for?” The salesman lifts a brow staring at each of you.
“We’re taking it inside a tornado,” Dani shrugs and he nods flabbergasted for only a second.
“You’re gonna want alluminum.”
The team works quickly and efficiently, Ben recording each step as Dexter fills the solution into the rockets. No one except you and Tyler notice Kate walk off towards the field with her camera.
You follow her, coming to stand beside her. The silence settles over you and you lean over, putting your head on her shoulder, “you ready for this?”
She snaps a picture, “yes. I’m ready.”
“Then let’s do the damn thing,” you straighten up and give her a high five, tugging her into a hug, “I’m so happy you came home.”
“I am too,” she tightens her arms.
When you break you notice Ben fidgeting with his camera and Tyler smiling at you both. And you give his shoulder a pat as you pass climbing into the backseat.
“Showtime, ladies and gentlemen,” Tyler climbs into the driver's seat and reaches for the radio, “alright let’s move out.”
The tension in the cab builds as you approach the tornado steadily forming before you. Suddenly the truck swerves when a convoy of Storm Par trucks cut you off. Tyler slams on the gas and pulls up beside Javi and Scott.
Javi looks between you and the road snapping his head back and forth. Before stepping on the gas and gaining speed ahead of you. “I guess it’s back to being rivals,” Tyler mumbles from the front seat.
You keep your eyes on the truck ahead as long as you can but the road is all but gone with the amount of condensation and dirt hitting the windshield. “We lost Doppler,” Kate hits the screen frustrated and leans forward, “I can’t see it.”
Tyler slows down, “holy fuc-“ the tornado before you is like something out of a horror movie and Javi and Scott are driving right into it.
You quickly try to pull out of your straps unsure what to do when Tyler shouts your name from the front seat. “Stay right where you are darlin’. That’s an order.” He locks the doors and you sit forward looking between them as Javi’s truck starts to spin and flip on its side.
“Javi, oh my god!” Kate shouts but you’re silent watching in horror.
“It’s gonna hit something!” Dex shouts over the radio and you all turn to the left to see some type of plant beside you.
“Oh my god,” Tyler is left speechless as the tornado absorbs the fire, turning it into a raging twister.
He puts the truck in reverse and you spring to action, clinging hard to his shoulder. “No, we can’t leave him!!”
“I’m not leaving him, but we need to move!” He puts the truck in reverse as he gets on the radio, “get the hell out of here, head for the town!”
Suddenly a huge piece of sheet metal slams into the side of Javi’s truck and you can barely see through the tears streaming down your face. Kate quickly reaches a hand back and you hold on with all your might.
“That was one lucky hit,” Tyler shouts, “it righted them, they’re backing up!”
“Thank god,” Kate squeezes your hand.
“We need to move, now,” Tyler flips the truck and you let go of Kate's hand and turn as far as you can keeping your eyes on Javi. “We got to get to the town and help those people, this is bad.”
“Where is he-“ you watch as the Storm Par truck turns in the opposite direction. Two feelings strike you at the same time, one happiness that he’s safe and the other disappointment that he’d leave these people to their fate.
Tyler grabs the radio, looking at the rear view, the storm getting closer with each breath. “When we reach the town we need to get these people to the shelters, this storm is gonna wipe out everything in its path!” The others agree and he steps on the gas gunning it for the town of El Reno.
When he stops the truck the town is in chaos. Vehicles crashing as everyone makes a mad dash for the lone road that leads out of town. A trolley continues on its track as its passengers jump out the back and vendors attempt to save their goods from the winds threatening to steal them away.
“Leave it,” you grab a woman attempting to save her wind chimes. The sound haunting in the mix of the shrieking winds and screams of terrified people.
“Tyler!” Dex shouts, “the shelters are full, we need to get everybody into the movie theater!”
“Alright let’s move it,” Tyler, Kate and you attempt to herd the people into the theater, avoiding things trying to take you out.
“Kate!” You shout, pushing her out of the way of a canopy. Suddenly the trolley breaks off the tracks, turning on its side and heading straight for you. Tyler shoves you both and a piece of debris falls on his leg.
“Tyler,” Kate gasps dropping to her knees and attempting to get the debris off him. You do the same both of your straining to lift it off him. A loud creak has you looking back towards the water tower, the foundation crumbling.
“We need to hurry,” you urge, “the tower is gonna collapse.”
“Kate,” Tyler calls out for her, “Kate you need to leave me, you have to go.”
Kate ignores him, “no, no I’m not leaving you!”
“We need leverage!” You freeze whipping around to see Javi holding out a metal pole, “scoot over baby.”
You move and he pushes the pole under the pile, “alright, on the count of three. One, two, three!” You all lift and Tyler shimmy’s out, Kate instantly grabbing him and hauling him up to her side. “Run!” Javi shouts, grabbing your hand as the foundation crumbles and the water tower collapses.
“Fuck!” The water pushes your legs out from under you and Javi holds on firm, his hand bruising as the water crashes over you.
“Come on,” he shouts, pulling you to stand, “inside the theater, we need to go.” You take a step towards the theater and scream, looking down has you seeing green.
“Javi,” you whimper, his eyes wild when he looks down and sees your leg. “Oh fuck,” he looks around “help!”
Tyler shrugs off Kate, limping towards you and helping take some of the weight off. The blood oozes down your leg and leaves a trail behind you.
They lower you into one of the theater seats and take off searching for a basement. And when Kate returns you know the outcome, you’re absolutely fucked.
Tyler and Javi argue over what to do, neither of them notice Kate sneaking away, but you do. Steeling yourself you rise from the seat and follow her, trying your best to keep silent over the agony. The doors are swinging open and you move through, seeing Kate run towards the truck. You take a deep breath and scream, running across the asphalt after her, dodging debris until you’ve reached the passenger seat.
“What are you doing?!” Kate shouts at you when you pull down the restraints and try to catch your breath.
“What does it fucking look like I’m doing?! Going for a joy ride?! Now drive!” She doesn’t bother to argue and the truck jumps as you head into the eye of the storm.
Two silos sit on either side of the field and flames lick overhead as Kate parks and digs the drill into the dirt. Quickly you flick the rockets to set into the air and she flicks the safety for the barrels.
The air charged and the cab silent. “We’re probably gonna die,” she whispers, looking towards you.
“There’s nowhere else I’d rather be,” you tell her, feeling the tear slide down your cheek. She holds out a hand and you take it. “I love you Kate.”
“I love you too,” she gasps as the storm overtakes us. She presses the button and you let out a breath, both of you turning to see the barrels still full behind you. “Shit!” She presses repeatedly on the button, panic overtaking as the truck begins to slowly slide backward.
You press with her, both of you gasping when the barrels unlatch and the mixture floats up into the storm. “We did it,” you watch with awe as the sun begins to stream through a break in the cloud. But it’s not enough, the truck moves back and you feel the moment it unlatches from the ground.
“Kate!” you scream, grabbing hold of the shoulder straps and watching the world spin like you’re inside a dryer.
It seems to go on for a eternity, but then it suddenly stops. Everything hurts you’re upside down and when you turn your head to see Kate, her eyes are wide open, but she’s breathing.
“Are you OK?“ she asks, reaching across the consul for my hand.
“Yeah, I’m okay. That just really hurt.”
“Yeah,” she nods, “we need to get out of here.” She unlatches the belt and drops down with a groan. “Fuck, that hurt.”
“Yeah,” you grunt, “I’m not looking forward to that part.” Kate grimaces before she reaches forward and hovers her hand over the latch, “just do it.”
She pops the lock and you drop, cursing up a storm when your head hits the dash. “You’ve probably got a concussion,” she mumbles making you laugh.
“We just drove through a tornado, that tossed us around like a dog with his bone. I think we both have concussions.”
She chuckles, “you’re probably right. Can you move?”
“I’m gonna need you to drag me.” Kate nods, dragging herself out of the truck and panting when she finally makes it outside. She’s just reaching a hand out for you when you hear them.
“KATE!”
“Y/N! Oh my god,” Javi slows seeing you inside and breathing before he breaks down sobbing. “Baby, you okay?”
“No,” you cry, “Javi, get me out of here.”
“We got you,” Boone and Javi crawl through the space and drag you. Javi visibly flinches as you scream in pain. The second you’re out he’s gathered you in his arms and holding you as gently as he can like you’re made of glass.
“Ty,” Kate reaches a hand out to touch his face, “I think we should go line dancing.”
He laughs through his tears looking at her like she hangs the sun, “Okay, city girl, I’ll take you line dancing.
“But first we all need a hospital,” Javi stands and walks over to the sirens, the paramedics reaching for you the second the door is open.
“We got her sir,” he hesitantly puts you down on the table and steps back, only far enough to let them work and keeping an eye on you the whole time. “We’re gonna transport,” they pack up and Javi climbs in the back holding your hand. “This one too,” another paramedic comes over, with Kate and Tyler. The four of you ride in the hospital in silence, lucky to be alive.

❀ WIP Wednesday! ❀
Rules: Make a new post with the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! Then tag as many people as you have WIPS.
Thank you to @hederasgarden for the tag (like a week ago whoops lol)!
All of these are F!Readers and more information on them can be found via the masterlist/WIPs list found in my pinned post here.
If I take a while to respond to your choice - don't worry. My WIPs are in different levels of completeness so some are fully ready to go, some need to be fine-tuned, and others need to be written.
(Yes, I have a stupid amount of WIPs. No, none of them have titles yet. I tried to break them down and give them identifying factors to make it easier for y'all if I had multiple fics that would have the same pairing.)
