Otgw and toh crossover!
Imagine how much better things would have been if Caleb and Philip ended up in the unknown while Wirt and Greg ended up in the demon realm

if you're wondering why the transcript took so long... yeah this is why i'm not gonna lie. the costumes look significantly less cool irl though despite our efforts so just pretend they're this source-material-accurate

So I’m kinda hard on money rn, and have been saving my money pretty strictly, but I found something I had to make an exception for. I present to you: Him.
He is a genuine late Victorian (1890~1901) Gold filled Enamel and glass rhinestone frog pin!!! He was only $20 due to the fact that he is missing the rhinestone on his left leg, and the gold fill has been largely worn away (he was well loved) but that’s quite easy to replace, and quite frankly, I love him just the way he is. I feel i have no other option than to name him Jason Funderburger in honor of Greg’s pet frog from Over the garden wall, as I just got done watching it! I hope y’all are as obssessed with him as I am 😭😭😭

Halston balestrom ask?
Tumblr media
My favorite frog! Okay maybe my second favorite frog next to Jason Funderburger.
Halston i’m so sorry my storm wizard has been stuck in dragonspyre so long i’m just bad at survival and i hate fizzling. I will remember the way it sounds to hear him say “Resonating Omni Audiograph” for my entire life and I miss the little celestia pre quest.
Also goddamn what an outfit for a little guy. Would break out of prison again.

When I was younger, I used to make a lot of t-shirts, bags, hats, etc. as gifts for my friends.
They would always feature a character from a show or movie that they liked (admittedly, it also had to be something I liked, or else I would have no interest in making it haha). I wish I had photos of some of my old projects, but I was always bad about remembering to take them before they were given away, and never seen again :P
I really appreciate those of my friends who made the effort to use/wear the things I made for them, because I realize now how embarrassing that might have been given the...childish amateurish look they often had.
But because they always seemed happy with my presents, I continued to create and improve! And now, you can see the result of all my trials and errors.
These characters are mostly made from felt/fleece (I had to learn through the aforementioned trials and errors that it is much better to use fabric that doesn't fray for things like this). Little buttons were also sewn onto Wirt and Greg's clothes, a scrap of pleather for Greg's little bag, and two scraps of silver satin were sewn together into the shape of a little teapot and turned right-side out for his "elephant trunk."
I start by choosing an image that is easily translated to simple color blocks, which usually means a cartoon character. I then decide which parts of the image will be its own "layer", or fabric piece. For example, Jason Funderburger (frog), is made up of a main body, a left and right leg, two arms, lips, two eyes, two pupils, and dark coloring on both the left and right sides. I take the original reference image and then crop around each of these elements. It ends up looking like a collage of body parts and shapes in a word doc. I can then print it and cut out a dedicated "pattern piece" for each element. I trace around these paper pieces onto their corresponding fabrics and cut them out. These are then layered and hand stitched to one another where they overlap.
It took me awhile to decide what I wanted these to be sewn onto, but ultimately went with little linen pillows. The borders are embroidered in fall colors--small stalks of wheat, french knot winter berries, fallen leaves blowing in the wind, and fern-like branches frame each brother.
I had a lot of fun making these, and they always keep me company during my obligatory otgw re-watch every fall!

OKAY but like. from a design perspective part of the horror of the Beast is how well he blends in with the forest, so in translating him into the King in Yellow one would have to either 1) sacrifice the Beast's camoflage or 2) sacrifice the King's iconic coloration. you could probably get some kind of happy medium(ish) by just changing the eyes, but that still takes away from The Horror-- at that point it's still better to just lean into whatever the King's got going on. I love the Beast's horns, so I'd probably keep those, and I was thinking maybe yellow candles or lights or smth on the points? or maybe they simply end in yellow-black thorns, that could also work. and OBVIOUSLY he'd hold himself completely differently from the Beast, I'm thinking more hunched and scuttley, as opposed to the Beast's elegant pride, and that would end up doing a lot of the work of making him read as the King for me. hm hm hm
this is....... very little. but I am making my way through ep 19 of Malevolent and the argument they're having about like, retaining humanity? and how John is arguing that it's a purely physical thing, while Arthur maintains that the King is also trying to fuck him up mentally, morally, spiritually, made me think of "keep hearty in both body and spirit"
basically. Malevolent OtGW AU. the King is the Beast.

Hetalia/Over the Garden Wall Au
Wirt/Greg: Romano and Italy. Italy would be Greg, obviously. Romano is an angsty little angst.
Beatrice: Prussia. Sassy boi.
The woodsman: America, and the soul in the lantern is supposedly Canada’s.
The beast: Russia. Powerful and dark.
Endicott and Grey: Austria and Hungary. Both very wealthy and a little lonely.
Fred: Denmark.
The giant pumpkin/Enoch: China, old and wise and in charge.
The tavern keeper: Japan. Very committed to understanding people’s labels.
Auntie Whispers and Lorna: Switzerland and Lichtenstein. Switzerland is the scary seeming caretaker of course and then you have the seemingly sweet one.
School teacher and lover: England and France. Francis is the teacher, being all dramatic and wishy washy. Arthur is stuck in a gorilla costume.
Sara: Germany! Of course.
Jason Funderburger: Sealand, oh my gosh.

On my 100th rewatch of Over the Garden wall and something I like about the series is how Sarah and Jason Funderburger subvert our expectations. For most of the series, all we know about these characters are what we hear from Wirt's perspective and for a while, it seems like they fall into two very common tropes in kid's media. The cool but seemingly unattainable crush and the cool guy that gets in the way of the main character.
But in the second to last episode, we see that's not the case! Sarah is the school mascot, she dresses like a creepy clown, and it's clear from their first real interaction that she likes Wirt. Jason isn't some teenage Adonis. He's a short, nasally high schooler that wears a suit to a Halloween party.
What makes Sarah 'unattainable" and Jason Funderburger an obstacle isn't because of anything they did or feel, it's a product of Wirt's own anxiety and lack of confidence.
It's another example of how Over the Garden Wall subverts story tropes, this isn't a teen rom-com where convoluted misunderstandings and unforeseen circumstances keep the main boy and girl apart. It's straightforwardly Wirt's own baggage that gets in the way.
