Bible Conference in 1968 was strange:
The annual Spring Bible Conference is one of the outstanding features of the year at Bob Jones University. Running for eight days, the conference brings to the campus outstanding, orthodox Bible teachers, pastors and evangelists. All regular academic work is suspended for the conference which takes the place of a spring vacation.
This year's conference was considered one of the school's best. More off-campus guests were present than for any other event in the school's history.
Services were held in the 3,000-seat Rodeheaver Auditorium, and overflow crowds watched the services via closed-circuit television in the 1,000-seat Concert Center. For most of the sessions it was necessary to use a third auditorium the War Memorial Chapel, which has a seating capacity of about 700+.
Guest speakers at the conference included Dr. Robert T. Ketcham, national consultant (retired), General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, Chicago, Ill.; Dr. Ian R. K. Paisley, pastor of Raven hill Free Presbyterian Church, Belfast, Ireland, moderator of Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster, editor of "The Revivalist," "Protestant Telegraph." Also, Dr. Charles S. Poling, pastor of the Church of All Christian Faiths, Phoenix, Ariz.; Dr. Glen Schunk of Greenville, evangelist; and Dr. H. C. Slade, pastor of Jarvis Street Baptist Church, Toronto, Canada.
The next Bible Conference will be March 30-April 7, 1968. Among the speakers scheduled are Dr. G. Archer Weniger, pastor of the Foothill Boulevard Baptist Church of Oakland, Calif; Dr. Noel Smith, editor of the Baptist Bible Tribune," Springfield, Mo.; Dr. Bob Wells, pastor of the Central Baptist Church of Anaheim, Calif.; Rev. John Balyo, pastor of the Cedar Hill Baptist Church of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and John Stormer, author of' "None Dare Call It Treason."
John Stormer was an anti-communist speaker.
And then a WBJU story:
WBJU, the student-manned carrier-current radio station, is now in its second year of operation. Located in the radio television wing of the Fine Arts Building, the fully equipped radio station is designed to be heard in the eight student dormitories.
Though staffed entirely by radio students, the station's operations are supervised by Robert Pratt, chairman of the division of speech and head of the department of radio and television, and other members of the radio-television faculty.
According to Mr. Pratt, the carrier-current station serves as a "laboratory training unit for students who have dedicated themselves to using broadcasting as a Christian ministry." He said that the station also endeavors to supplement the listening interests of the student body.
The university grants the bachelor of arts degree in radio and television and the bachelor of science degree in broadcast engineering. WBJU is in addition to the commercial stations operated by Bob Jones University -- WMUU and WMUU-FM in Greenville and WAVO and WAVO-FM in the Atlanta, Ga., area.

"SAYS GUN HAND HELD WHILE HEAD STRUCK," Toronto Star. January 5, 1943. Page 2. ---- Police Officer Describes Fight With Two Men in Theatre Break-In ---- 9 VARIED CHARGES ---- Sequel to an attack upon P.C.William Skimmings, of the York township police, last October, John Kippax and Wilfred Blaney appeared before Judge James Parker in county criminal court today, on a charge of breaking into the Grant theatre, Oakwood Ave. Kippax pleaded guilty and Blaney not guilty.
Norman Borins appeared for the crown and B. J. Spencer Pitt for the defence.
In all there are nine varied charges against the accused, but the crown is proceeding with the entering charges only at present. Other principal charges in connection with the Grant theatre yet to be heard are carrying concealed weapons and resisting arrest by, and wounding, the constable.
Skimmings testified he found a door on the theatre had been jimmied.
"I went into the office and saw two men working on the safe," he said.
"Handle Chopped Off" "I saw some iron bars on the floor and the handle of the safe chopped off. I drew my revolver and turned my flashlight. In response to my command, the two men raised their hands. As I approached, Blaney reached toward a windbreaker on the safe. At the same time he reached toward his hip pocket and drew out a revolver. Before he could level it, it fell from his hand. Then he jumped on me and grabbed my gun hand. He hung on desperately.
"While I was struggling with him. Kippax picked up a crowbar from the floor and struck me on the head with it, cutting my scalp. I was treated by a nearby doctor."
The officer said that as Kippax struck him. he turned to grapple with him. Then his flashlight went out.
"As I fought with Kippax, Blaney dashed out," the officer went on. "I managed to overpower Kippax and handcuff him. Then I started in pursuit of Blaney. As I did this. Kippax cried out: 'Don't follow him, he's got a gun. I don't want to get shot. I went out to the street and saw Blaney running."
Identifies Glove Sergt. Norman Taylor said he found five live cartridges in a green windbreaker. two in a revolver lying on the floor and two others lying around. He also identified a glove and other articles at the scene.
"When I put Kippax in the cells," he added, "he had only one glove. on."
Inspector Alfred Gray, of York township, said he later arrested Blaney in a rooming-house.
"Blaney had a cut on his face. It was fresh. He told me he had been hurt in a fight the previous night at Jarvis and Dundas Sts.," the officer stated.

Blomqvist to make IndyCar debut as substitute for Pagenaud | IndyCar
Tom Blomqvist will make his IndyCar debut in Toronto this weekend as a substitute for Simon Pagenaud at Meyer Shank Racing. Pagenaud will miss his second race in a row following the huge crash he suffered during practice for the previous round at Mid-Ohio two weeks ago. His car was launched into a series of terrifying barrel rolls after he suffered a brake failure approaching the corner. The driver confirmed in a statement he will not be able to participate in this weekend’s Indy Toronto. “After undergoing further medical evaluation this week under the care of the IndyCar medical team, I have not been cleared to race,” said Pagenaud. “While I feel good, I am still recovering.” The Toronto round is the first of two events on consecutive weekends for IndyCar. The series will head to the Iowa Speedway for two races the following weekend. “With back-to-back races, there just wasn’t enough time to allow my body to fully recover in time to compete this weekend,” Pagenaud continued. “I will continue to follow the medical team’s recommendations so I can be back racing soon. Thank you everyone for your support.” Meyer Shank co-owner Mike Shank said the team is “obviously still working to get Simon as healthy as possible; he is feeling [fine] and is ready to get back in the car once he is cleared”. Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free “The decision to put Tom in the car was an easy one,” said Shank. “He’s coming off of an IMSA win at [Mosport] last weekend and I have all the confidence in the world putting him in our Indy car.” Blomqvist is in his second year driving for Meyer Shank in the IMSA sports car series and became champion with team mate Oliver Jarvis last year. This January, Blomqvist was part of the winning crew in the Daytona 24 Hours, though several weeks later the team was fined and the drivers penalised 200 points each after it emerged they had violated the minimum tyre pressure rules during the race. He made his IndyCar test debut with the team last year, but appreciates he will face a stern test by making his debut on the rough and demanding Toronto street circuit. “First and foremost, I’m thinking of Simon and hoping that he recovers as quickly as possible so that he can get back behind the wheel,” said Blomqvist. “I have to thank Mike and Jim [Meyer] for considering me to fill in this weekend. “I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what IndyCar has to offer. Diving straight into the deep end is an understatement after only having one test in the MSR Indy car last year. “I’m excited but aware of the challenges getting up to speed during a race weekend, so I’m not putting any pressure on myself. Just going to go out there soak it all in and give it all I’ve got.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free IndyCar Browse all IndyCar articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net/

Anarchist, anti-capitalist café closes after just one year
There’s no such thing as a free lunch – literally. Canadian man Gabriel Sims-Fewer (it’s hard to call him a businessman or entrepreneur) put this to the test last May when he launched “The Anarchist” on Toronto’s Jarvis Street asking customers to “pay what you can for its 12-ounce rotary drip coffee. House burner and landlord Pop Coffee Works offered the property for free for the first six…

The City of Toronto is introducing priority travel routes as Metrolinx’s Ontario Line construction severely impacts the downtown core. Specifically, Queen St. from Victoria St. to Bay St. will be closed on May 1 for four-and-a-half years. Dundas St., from Jarvis St. to Bathurst St., will become the first priority travel route until summer 2024. This means this stretch of Dundas will only have emergency work; on-street parking will be restricted and CaféTO Curb Lane cafes will not be installed to keep the roadway clear of restrictions. “We know we have a lot of construction ahead of us. We recognize the vital need for transit expansion while balancing the needs of the public and businesses to travel in and through the downtown core,” Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie (Scarborough-Rouge Park) said in a statement. “The City is taking proactive steps to reduce the impact of all construction by mitigating traffic congestion as much as possible,” she said. “Priority travel routes are just one of the ways we’re keeping Toronto moving.” When finished, the Ontario Line will provide a 15-station subway line running from Exhibition Place, through downtown, to the Ontario Science Centre. More priority travel routes will be identified as Ontario Line construction progresses. City of Toronto traffic agents will also be deployed to key intersections during peak traffic periods.

"SHE GOT AWAY OFTEN BUT CAUGHT FINALLY," Toronto Star. July 28, 1933. Page 2. ---- Woman Dodged Employee of Store Where She Bought Coat and Didn't Pay ---- Mrs. Harry Chew, alias Mrs. Donald van Hassen, alias Doris Johnston, appeared in women's court to-day charged with theft of a fur coat valued at $119.73 from a store.
An employee for the company stated that the accused woman, then known as Mrs. Chew, had paid $5 deposit on the coat on Dec. 7, 1931, with the understanding she was to pay on the instalment plan. She had paid $30 altogether.
"Then she cleared out from her Jarvis St. room, leaving a note that she was going to jump into the river, and I didn't see her for six months, when I invited her to go for a ride," he testified. "She didn't know me and accepted. I drove her to the rear of our store and took her into the counter. Realizing where she was, she tried to get out and then said the coat had been sold in Montreal for $5, claiming she had turned it over to Mr. Chew, who works in a cafe. Then she ran away.
"I met her again on Church St. She said she had the coat and would get it in 15 minutes. I waited almost an hour, but she never turned up. Just about a month ago I saw her on the street, but she ran up an alley."
Witness produced the contract signed by accused, agreeing that the coat would remain the property of the company until paid for in full.
Harold Chapman, for the defence, claimed there was no identification of accused's signature and that the coat became accused's property when she took possession.
"I maintain there is no case against accused," he concluded, waiving defence.
"You will be remanded in custody for sentence on Aug. 4, sentence to date from to-day," ruled Magistrate Patterson
"I owed her $78 room rent, so she kept some of my tools worth $35 and I can't earn a living without them," claimed Sydney Bond, charging his ex-landlady, Alice Bouchan, with breach of the Inn Keepers' Act. "I tendered her a week's payment, but she refused me my tools even then."
"I have no other way to protect myself," pleaded accused. "I haven't enough money to sue."
"Complainant will pay $6 on his rent and accused must release the goods," ruled the bench. The case was adjourned to July 31 in order to allow the conditions to be fulfilled.

Located on Front East and Jarvis streets in Toronto's Old Town, St. Lawrence Market is one of the most beautiful places to see. It is one of the most important shopping destinations in the city. It is located in a historical building, and you can find a wide variety of products in it. North, South and St. The market, which has two buildings as Lawrence Hall, was selected as the best market in the world by National Geographic in 2012. The north building was closed due to restoration work. St. Lawrence Market In 1803, when the population of the city increased, the need to establish a market in the city emerged. First, a market started to be established in Market Square on Jarvis Street. During the period when slavery was not yet abolished, there was also a section for slaves brought from Africa in this market. Later, different buildings were built for the market. These wooden buildings were rendered unusable by fires in 1831 and 1849. After the fire, the St. Lawrence Hall was built. In 1845, the south building was built and used as the town hall. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push(); Exhibitions are held from time to time in the Market Gallery, located on the 2nd floor of the south part. On the first floor and the first floor, there are 120 market stands where various products such as fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, delicatessen, and dairy products are sold. In the northern part, there are shops where antiques are sold besides food.

A New Secret About Jarvis Street
The ‘A New Secret About Jarvis Street’ title came to me recently, but not the one about the Warwick Hotel on Jarvis Street in Toronto, which I wrote about in 2012. Nope, the idea for the title came from Marlene Holland, a new gal pal of mine. Congratulations, Danny – I knew it would not be long before you met someone! Spanky No, Spanky, Marlene is happily married. But she does have at least…
