We finally finished the floors at Lawrence! Here are some progress photos from the bigger patch of flooring.

Top left: After the first week of orientation at Lawrence, we laid out edge pieces to see how many rows we would need and how they would fit with the uneven subfloor.

Top middle: We then cut and laid out all the rows besides the last row which was roughly 1/3 standard thickness and smaller on one end than the other.

Top right: Here's Xac stapling the last groove side row! On Katherine and Anya's suggestion, we stapled a blunt row (no tongue, only groove) before laying/nailing down the last blunt row.

Bottom left: The last bit was tricky. Instead of a super thin row, we ended up doing a 1/2 row + this variable length row that went from 1 1/8" on this near side to 2" on the far side. Anya mastered making these diagonal cuts! She used a circular saw clamped onto the work bench.

Bottom right: Here's Fanan putting in the last nail! We put in small pilot holes to help the nails go through the floorboards. Three bits and some loud hammering later (sorry, Japu) and we were finally finished!

No início dos tempos, antes da claridade do dia vir a existir, apenas os vaga-lumes iluminavam fracamente a escuridão dentro dos cupinzeiros. Basicamente, os seres que habitavam o mundo eram: os ancestrais dos índios, que viviam dentro dos cupinzeiros, e aqueles que viviam na superfície da terra, os demiurgos e os itsekeko – estes últimos tidos como os predadores. Assim, estes ancestrais dos índios viviam em constante ameaça e também privados dos bens culturais: fogo, panelas, redes, cestos, adornos plumários, etc. – bebendo urina como se fosse água e ‘cozinhando’ a comida no sovaco ou na virilha como se fosse ao fogo. Tudo isso para não correr o risco de ser devorado pelos itsekeko na superfície. O fogo era de propriedade dos itsekeko, os quais possuíam algum tipo de cultura material, como as roças de mandiocabrava e a cerâmica, por exemplo. Nesse momento havia seres antropomorfos, antropozoomorfos e zooantropomorfos – entre os Wauja do Alto Xingu esses seres são chamados de yerupoho, entretanto não encontramos um termo correspondente no karib dos Kalapalo. No que pudemos averiguar, os Kalapalo chamam nos com o termo itsekeko. Certa vez, os itsekeko ficaram sabendo que os demiurgos Taũginhü (Sol) e Aulukumã (Lua) estavam planejando lançar no céu dois corpos celestes que dissipariam a escuridão predominante, criando o dia e a noite – observase que a assombrosa escuridão que dominava a superfície era diferente da penumbra da noite atual relativamente iluminada pela lua, ela era de fato muito mais temerária. Outro comentário a ser feito é que os itsekeko mencionados foram criados pelos demiurgos a partir de cera de abelha ou resinas de árvores – o que pode apontar para a origem do medo destes seres à luz solar.

Com a informação dos planos de Taũginhü circulando entre os itsekeko, estes começaram a fazer sofisticadas ‘roupas’ para que pudessem se proteger da pungente luz do sol. Chegou então o momento que, provido com uma máscarasol feita basicamente de penas de araravermelha (Arachloropterus) e de tucano (Ramphastidae), Taũginhü atirou uma flecha para cima fixandoa no firmamento. Em seguida, atirou outra na extremidade da primeira flecha, e assim consecutivamente foi atirando flechas uma na extremidade das outras até chegar ao chão – formando assim, uma espécie de corda feita de flechas para que pudesse subir ao céu, criando o astro solar (giti, em kalapalo). Em seguida, Aulukumã o seguiu com outra máscara feita de plumas da cauda do japu (Psarocolius decumanus) e brancas do jaburu (Jabirumycteria), e então criou a lua (nhune). Foi assim que o dia e a noite vieram a existir. Esse invento cósmico teve como efeito o aparecimento de dois tipos de itsekeko: os que criaram suas ‘roupas’ a tempo, apresentandose em duas ‘roupagens’ básicas. O primeiro tipo de ‘roupagem’ é as que são visíveis e tangíveis: são os seres conhecidos como ngene (criaturas de pelo); kanga (criaturas aquáticas); ‘insetos’ (termo desconhecido); itolo (pássaros); eke (cobras); fenômenos atmosféricos; e artefatos. O segundo tipo de ‘roupagem’ é as que são invisíveis e intangíveis: são os seres chamados genericamente de itsekeko. O segundo tipo somente é apercebido pelos xamãs e por pessoas gravemente doentes.

Here, There, Anywhere!

Today was an incredible day. I saw artists in all the GO Lawrence fellows as we begun to roll up our sleeves and capture the space at 4 Union Street in several ways.

HERE we stand on the Union Crossing bridge over the canal in Lawrence, MA. This was after we moved a bunch of furniture for our neighbors (Japu restaurant) and after our GO Guide Jay helped us laser scan the interior and exterior Gateway Office space. It felt exciting to see how we can share this space with our partners ANYWHERE in the world using Matterport. As dusk fell upon us, Jay and I wandered through the urban wild of the island, only a 7 minute walk from our office. I can't wait to go THERE with the fellows. There is so much to explore. Let's GO together!
