Made this pudding, first as savory, and then as a sweet version (the one depicted). I also tripled the recipe since I knew there would be more interest for that. Really amazed by how smooth and rich it turned out :)
Japanese microwave pudding
Savory version:
Whip together loosely and strain: 2 eggs 1 cup water 1/2 package dashi powder
Pour into a microwave safe container. Add a loose lid, cook in microwave. My micro is 850 watt, so I used 80% wattage for 5 minutes
Before serving add : a splash of soy sauce a splash of maple syrup
Sweet version:
Whip together loosely and strain: 6 eggs 3 cups milk 1/2 cup sugar vanilla to taste
line the ramekin with: 3-4 tbsp golden syrup
Pour into a microwave safe container. Add a loose lid, cook in microwave.
This time I used 80% for 18 minutes

Did you know that NHK has officially published recipes from Tsukutabe?
Cuz I sure as hell didn't. I happened to see an announcement from them in anticipation for season 2 of the series (which starts tomorrow!!) and I wanted to share! The official website of the drama series gives recipes for many of the recipes from season 1 of the show (most of which are the same dishes or very similar to the original manga). They're all in Japanese, but you can get pretty reasonable instructions with a translate tool. Here they are!
Nomoto-san's Giant Lu Rou Fan (braised pork over rice) from episode 1
Nomoto-san's Giant Omurice from episode 2
Nomoto-san & Kasuga-san's Grilled Riceballs with Sendai Miso from episode 2
Nomoto-san's Whole Pumpkin Pudding from episode 4
Nomoto-san's Kinchaku Eggs (eggs in fried tofu pouches) from episode 5
Nomoto-san's Harako Meshi (salmon rice topped with salmon roe) from episode 6
Nomoto-san's Stollen-style Pound Cake from episode 7
Nomoto-san's Roast Beef from episode 9
I'm really happy I found out about these, definitely gonna recreate some of these!! I already made the miso riceballs once when I was rewatching the show with my roommate, and we just used some recipe we found online. Now we have the legit version :D Definitely wanna make the pumpkin pudding someday. I'm super happy this exists even though it doesn't have all the recipes from the show, like for the udon that Kasuga makes for Nomoto, or their homemade gyoza. I hope they'll continue releasing recipes for the dishes of season 2 as it airs as well!

Hello Hello! I know it's been a while but I was wondering if you could have the lyrics and maybe the instrumental of the song that Asha sings in the square to help her people (if you don't want that's fine... I'm studying and I started listening to some songs to inspire me and I remembered about this scene in your rewrite and I started to imagine your rewrite as a 2D animation of the classic Disney and I wondered what this scene would be like heheh) if you don't mind too... I also wanted to know what your favorite foods are of your characters in the rewrite (asha, magnificent, amaya, and the 7 teenagers), you could also say what the 7 teenagers like to do alone/ their hobbies. Well, that's what I wanted to ask about your rewrite, sorry if it was a lot of questions, I'm LOVING everything about your rewrite♡ ten thousand times better than Disney's wish😤 anyway, thanks for the rewrite and stay well and drink water hahaha😁😋
Unfortunately I don't have lyrics for that song yet, it would take me a lot of time that I don't have yet to work on creating it, maybe once I'm done with the whole rewrite I can try coming up with something since that song IS very important to the narrative, and currently all we have is "It's an inspiring song about fighting to achieve what you wish for no matter if all the odds are against you" that so happens to have a few references to past Disney I want songs.
Though... After listening to this deleted scene
youtube
I'm considering making "A Wish Worth Making" THE song, or at least a place holder for now. It's surprisingly fitting. However, my idea was for the song to be like a story that Sabino told her, since ya know, he couldn't sing nor play the mandolin because that was his wish that Magnifico kept from him... So I'm undecided.
Anyway, now for the favorite meals part, that sounds fun, and helps me explore the national heritages of each one of the characters, so let's do this:
Asha
Her favorite food is Mhalbi with pistachios, a milk pudding from Algeria. Her mother was Amazigh, and she taught this traditional recipe to her husband and Sabino. After she passed Sabino would still make it for Asha, it's a little piece of her culture that is very sweet and easy to make, she has a bit of a sweet tooth.
Tumblr media
Dahlia
Dahlia is a special case since her family has been robbed of their passion for their traditional cuisine, if originally her mother and father wished for things along the lines of "We want to share our culture through our food" the king changed that to them just cooking what he liked. Sooo she has no connection to Japanese food. But, hypothetically, if she did grow up with her parents acting normally, her favorite meal would be Takoyaki, a savory dish of grilled balls of batter made with flour and eggs filled with octopus chunks and other ingredients.
Tumblr media
Gabo
The name "Gabo" has German origins, so I decided Gabo's family comes from Germany. His favorite dessert is a bienenstich kuchen, also known as "bee sting cake", I think it's fitting because Gabo is always acting like he just got stung by a bee. But besides his rough exterior he has a soft spot for sweets.
Tumblr media
Simon
Simon's last name is O'Donohue, which is a name of Irish and Gaelic origins, also the name means Dark Fighter... Interesting. Anyway, so his family is descended from Irish people, thus I choose that his favorite food is a traditional Irish Colcannon, a flavorful dish of mashed potatoes and greens like sauteed kale, and green onions. Quite easy too make and eat for a sleepy head like him.
Tumblr media
Bazeema
I've mentioned in my blog about the 7 teens that Bazeema is muslim and wears a hijab (As she did in some concept arts... But Disney changed that, cause they're stupid) so her favorite food is a Palestinian lady cheeks... heheh get it? Because Bazeema blushes a lot?... Anyway this is a traditional dessert are like made with orange blossom water, cinnamon quill, caster sugar and other sweet ingredients, sweet just like her.
Tumblr media
Hal
I saw on twitter that Hal's earrings resemble "Jaaro dibbei" earrings from the Fulani people, a West African tribe. So I picked a traditional meal from west Africa. Kedjenou, this dish consists of a spicy stew that is slow-cooked in a terracotta pot over fire or coals. Hal is more into spicy food, matches her fiery passion.
Tumblr media
Safi
Safi is a name of Arabic origins. His favorite dessert is Mamoul, a traditional arabic cookie, made with yeasted semolina, these vanilla and rose-infused cookies are sweet and floral with a decadent and robust centre, and although they look like they'd make Safi sneeze like crazy, they're one of the only meals that don't make him sneeze at all.
Tumblr media
Dario
Dario is an Italian name. So I picked gnocchi because SAME! Gnocchi is my comfort food too and I'm not even Italian, Dario is just like me for real.
Tumblr media
... *siiiiiigh* I was dreading getting to them... Here we go:
Magnifico and Amable
The blood of their enemies Just kidding, I'm giving them both the same favorite food because honestly these two have so much in common they might as well be the same character (Also it's currently 1 am as I'm writing this, I must go to bed.) so let's wrap this up. Their favorite dessert is Spanish Baked Apples, get it? Like the poisoned apple from Snow White? HAHAHAHA- Actually come to think of it their favorite meal might be children's tears, idk.
Tumblr media
WOOOOO okay this was a wild ride, researching and learning about all these meals was really fun! Thank you for the ask!
(Also I just now realized you also asked for their hobbies... I'll try answering that another time, cause' like I said, I gotta go to sleep lol)
Aster has no favorite food yet by the way, because he can't even taste food, but comment what meal you think would be his favorite if they were human.

Deuce Info Compilation Part 1: Deuce's Mom
Deuce first references his mother during Book 1 when it is revealed that he was “the only man of the house”, so he would help her with the heavy lifting that resulted from when she would “stock up” during sales.
Deuce references helping his mother during sales again in his PE vignette, where he uses the skills he learned as a child to help Sebek acquire pudding for Lilia (“I can’t tell you how many times I was barreled down over a single carton of eggs.”)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce reveals that he had been able to shop for Trey and others at the dorm during the chaos of Sam’s sale, and Sebek compliments him as “a gifted human indeed”.
We get the story of Deuce’s past for the first time during Book 1 when he explains that he had been “wild” when he was younger (“yobisute” was changed to “I called my teachers names” as English does not have honorifics)
He says his change of heart was inspired by overhearing his mother crying about “how she must have been a horrible mom, and that maybe she never should have tried to raise me by herself.” Deuce insists on taking responsibility for his past actions, saying “She hadn’t done anything wrong. It was all me.” When he was accepted to NRC, he “decided then and there that this time, I wouldn’t do anything to make her cry. This time, I’d become an honor student—someone she could be proud of.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The topic of his mother arises during Wish Upon a Star, as well, with Deuce saying that he once heard her wish for him to stop fighting and live a healthy life.
Deuce’s mother calls him twice during the Wish Upon a Star event, and the first time leads to a conversation with Silver where he says that his old friends used to make fun of him for being so close to her. Silver says, “It’s only natural you’d want to talk regularly with someone you care about.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce shares a summarized version of his past with Silver and we learn that, due to his poor reputation, Deuce would get accused of things that he’d had nothing to do with.
He says, “Of course I got a huge attitude when people wouldn’t believe me. Looking back, though, they had every reason not to.” We learn that the only people who ever believed him were his mother and a neighborhood police officer who would always insist on hearing his side of a story and prove that he had an alibi when people tried to frame Deuce for things he hadn’t done.
Deuce says that, “If I could be like that, maybe my mom wouldn’t worry for much”. Deuce explains that this is why he wants to be a police officer when he is older: more specifically, a part of an agency that handles magical crimes, referred to as “magic marshals”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce’s mother calls him again at the end of Wish Upon a Star to tell him that “Even Night Raven College couldn’t have asked for a finer Stargazer than you” and “You know I’m very proud of you”, which nearly makes Deuce cry. He says, “One of these days, I’m gonna make my mom happy by making an even bigger wish come true.”
Deuce brings up his dream of joining the police force again in his birthday vignette, saying that he he has put most of his effort into “media research”, watching movies and TV and memorizing “intense-looking running styles” and “cool-sounding one-liners to use when making an arrest”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deuce mentions his mother often: in the Culinary Crucible he talks about wanting to “learn how to cook good meals for when I’m at home”, saying that his mother would “always cook egg dishes for my birthday” and “now I know what mom means when she says she adds a pinch of love to her cooking”.
We learn that Deuce would help his mother cook as a child. He says that he recently learned that she’d had a cold, but she didn’t let him know until after she had fully recovered. Deuce says “I kinda wish she’d lean on me more when she’s struggling” and “the next time I visit, I want to cook for her and show that I’m more dependable than ever!”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Crowley and Ortho threaten to expose the students for not going to rescue Idia from Eliza during the Phantom Bride event Deuce’s reaction is “my mom would cry if she saw me on the news like that”.
He also mentions his mother waiting for him during Winter Holidays, something he wants to buy but cannot afford and how he does not want to ask him mom for money, the curry she would make, sending her a picture of his halloween costume, helping her with household appliances and more.

foods with aggressively interesting texture that i dearly love to eat, and why escargot doesn’t make the cut
I. seafood
skate in brown butter
fish eggs! caviar tho if it’s affordable it tends to be too salty, better: shad roe like you get in stockholm in september; ikura (also tobiko etc but not as much as ikura my beloved)
grilled squid, grilled octopus, grilled cuttlefish. not overcooked. like they do it in portugal
raw squid/ika
this japanese place in nyc that unfortunately closed a while back used to do a ceviche type thing with bits of raw octopus in wasabi sauce? hhh
tiritas which is a ceviche where you cut up freshly caught tuna (and/or shrimp, etc) mix with lime juice sliced red onions chopped fresh jalapeño let sit for half an hour devour. this was in guerreros, halfway round the world from here, and i would go back for it
raw sweet shrimp/amaebi
oysters
raw fish in general: most of the sashimi you see in decent nyc places (default baseline selection not nearly as extensive in germany, although they do go in widely for scallops. creditable line on one fish market and one expensive restaurant yet to try)
II. not seafood but texturally adjacent to the above
lychees, fresh or tinned
tapioca pudding
steak tartare
carpaccio
that italian thin steak deal that’s raw on one side; very rare steak generally
escargot did not click, i think, because i wanted it to be seafood, and it wasn’t. it was missing an oceanic quality i irrationally wanted it to have. it’s also notable that most of the things on this list are raw, and that i decidedly prefer the raw items to the nonraw ones
i do also have textural Aversions, mostly soggy-sweet things in the cold savory food sector. marinated red peppers. floppy flaccid limp salad greens. condiments and dressings based on mayo of dubious provenance—ranch, british cocktail sauce, russian salads, a nasty orange condiment germany uses to make jackson pollock patterns on random plates of food or ruin a perfectly good burger. all of this stuff makes everything wet and drippy and soggy and i hate it. (it’s also usually sickly sweet. but even where sweet isn’t a problem, soggy is still bad! i don’t want a scoop of ice cream on top of my hot baked dessert, bc it will melt in two minutes, and then where will we be? nowhere good, that’s where. asking for the ice cream on the side is too fussy. don’t even mention custard to me)

Kizaru ✨: he likes poached eggs, avocado and toast with bananas later on. He loves drinking coffee too.
Akainu🌋: a traditional Japanese style breakfast with miso soup, salmon, rice and vegetables.
Ryokugyu 🌱: he’s ordering McDonald’s for breakfast.

Cooling down: some baked rice pudding, following roughly these proportions but made with about a cup of leftover Japanese rice and a pint of milk with maybe 1/2 c. of heavy cream mixed in, and 2 eggs. Some cinnamon sprinkled over the top along with the nutmeg.
I also used about half Splenda, though that is always gonna be a carb bomb. Make it at least slightly less so.
Planning to get a little tonight with more cream on top, but it's mostly for tomorrow.
In the background: remnants of sausage gravy. It's comfort food night, baby!
I've tried eating it with mashed potatoes before, and that does make a great easy supper. Tonight, I decided to go extra lazy and try it over baked potatoes instead. Which worked out very well! May have to do that again.
We had most of the sausage patties and some green beans steam-fried with bacon, onions, and a decent bit of red pepper flakes to eat on the side. A couple of the patties got crumbled into the gravy.
