#japan sinks koga haruo

I just rewatched japan sinks with some friends and I have so many thoughts on that show. In just ten episodes this show manages to be absolutely devastating and make me cry… twice, but also leave me with a weird sense of hope and closure that’s hard to find.

1. Everyone who has seen the show either loves it, hates it, or didn’t finish it. Which I’m not one to dis peoples options, but the main reason people don’t like the show makes zero sense. The main criticism I’ve seen is that it kills off too many characters. But like… it’s a show literally about japan sinking, are you surprised that it’s a tragedy where lots of people die??? I mean I was a bit shocked, but I thought the show was going to be about more of a metaphorical japan sinking (like maybe some sort of political unrest) not a literal one, but simply reading the show’s description would have made me realize I was wrong.

2. Disability representation. They had every opportunity to kill of Onodera and just say he died because that’s what happens when you effectively in the apocalypse and mostly paralyzed, but the main group, specifically Kite it like fuck it, no man left behind, idc if I’m putting my life in the line for this dude who can’t walk, talk, or move anything other then his fingers and toes, he’s one of us and god damn it, he’s not dying on my watch. There were 2 main scene where it was almost set up to kill him, but the didn’t. In a show that, once again, as far as there characters are concerned takes place during the apocalypse, had everyone going out of there way to take care of the disabled character and saw him as just as important as everyone else.

3. Trans representation. I love so much that Kite is trans and they don’t really make a big deal about it. It is never explicitly said, and only shown in one scene. He’s just (I think, if I’m remembering correctly) the top YouTuber in Japan, a complete and total badass, many children’s role model, who also just so happens to be trans. There’s a few other examples of lowkey queerness in the show, but Kite is the biggest example.

4. (Major spoiler warning) To me, I think the big appeal of the show is it has just the right amount of hurt comfort. Other then the dad, every major character death has a reason, and for lack of a better term accomplished something. Like Koga has one of the most devastating deaths I’ve seen animated, and one of only two scene in a show that has ever made me cry, but he dies 1) while doing what he loves and 2) while saving a memory disk that is used later on to help rebuild Japan. The mom is another example is the moms death. Her death is the only other scene in a show to make me cry and 1) once again, she died doing what she loves and 2) she died to save her children. She went fuck it, imma die anyway, might as well have one last hurrah and be a total badass.

I have many more thoughts on this show that I may post at a later date, but these are the big ones.

     The biggest earthquake had just hit. You were in the dining room with Haruo, waiting for the boy's mother to finish the curry she was making. Suddenly, the earthquake struck, causing pieces of debris to fall from the ceiling. Koga screamed, eyes lighting with terror as you wrapped your arms around him tightly and tried to usher him outside. Before you two could successfully make it outside, a piece of rubble fell on Mrs. Koga right before your eyes. That just inspired you to get yourself and your lover out of there faster.

Koga was shaking, the shock of seeing his mother die in front of him causing tears to stream down his face as he whimpered. You just held him tighter. "Shh, it's okay. You're safe at least, and I think she died on impact so she didn't have to suffer. She'd want you to keep moving forward. How about you just listen to music and-" your words cut off as you saw colorful lights illuminating trees by a shrine.

   "Hey, we could go there! Maybe there's other survivors there. Until then," you paused to put Haruo's headphones on his messy mop of black hair. "Just listen to music and relax." Koga gave you a weak smile. "Thank you" "Don't mention it!" You gave him a little kiss on his jawline and walked with him to the shrine.

It was now the night of the infamous party. You and Haruo were sitting in the corner, the ravenette having been dragged there by Kite. You two were practically inseparable, so you ended up going as well.

"Hey Haruo?" The other boy looked at you. "Hmm?" "It looks like one of your records is missing" you said, pointing at the bag. A look of panic immediately appeared on your lover's face. "Fuck, where could it have gone?!" He said, anxiously looking through the bag it was originally in. "I have no idea-" you cut off, hearing familiar music play. "I think we just found out"

Both of you looked up to see Kite playing the stolen vinyl. "Hey, that's my record!!" Koga yelled, tears in his eyes. "Yeahhh, I think the owner should play it!! After all a record you never play is just a disc!" The white haired man said with a half smile. Koga ran up, you following right behind him. "DJ KOGAAAA!!!" Kite yelled, placing the headset on that familiar mop of black hair. You squeezed your lover's hand to try and comfort him, before dragging Kite outside.

"What the fuck man?" you yelled, glaring at the other man in front of you. "Hey, calm down. I just wanted to bring him out of his shell, is that such a bad thing??" Kite asked, backing up slightly. "It's not when he doesn't enjoy the spotlight." your reply came out as a growl. "He used to run, so I thought—" "I don't care what you thought, those days are behind him. He's terrified right now, so you really fucked up" you took a step closer and swung a punch at the other man's face. All of your days you had spent practicing to protect Koga if push came to shove finally paid off.

"What the fuck man!!" Kite yelled, holding a hand to his bleeding nose. "Next time, I'm not letting you off so easy" and with that, you stalked away.

As soon as you got inside the room where the party was held, you scooped Haruo up in your arms and carried him outside. "Are you okay?" you asked as you put him down. "Um... a bit shaken, it was kind of fun at first but... soon I just felt like they were all staring at me, and that record was too personal. I wasn't ready to share that with so many people yet." He answered, his hands shaking. You looked at him, your gaze soft, before holding him in a close hug.

It was nearing the end of the group's journey. You and Koga were sitting in the bed of the truck as the others drove after Mt. Fuji erupted. The shockwave just hit, the glass from the windows flying back. You tried to push your lover away from the shards, but you were too late. You watched in horror as one lodged itself right under the other man's collar bone. "Mt. Fuji's shockwave came to us just now-" Kite was interrupted by your terrified scream.

Whipping his head around he saw Koga, his face contorted in utter pain with the long shard of glass stuck in him. Beside him, you were holding the other man with a terrified expression. And you continued to hold him tightly when they had to rip it out, having him say sideways in your lap, basically straddling him. When they started to pull it out you whispered comforting words in his ear and gave him gentle little kisses on his neck, collarbone, and jawline.

Everything seemed to be going well, as you and the others boarded the little boat with the old man. Then it happened.

The boat started to sink and in the struggle for everyone to get to the safety of the boat, you got separated from your beloved Haruo. You screamed his name but you couldn't hear a reply, and ended up getting shoved into a raft with Onodera and Kite. Those were some of the most miserable days of your life.

You and Kite didn't get along well to say the least. The two of you were constantly arguing over where to go and what to do. When you guys found the submarine, you and Kite argued over who could take credit.

  The arguing was soon forgotten when you all found the others. Finally, you were reunited with your beloved Haruo. You two went back to being inseparable until the fateful day. The data was swept away by the waves, and Koga was offering to go get it.

"It's different then running on the track." Kite said sternly, the you two rivals finally agreeing on something. You looked at him pleadingly. "Yeah Haruo— this is too dangerous. Please, don't do this!" you begged, and the ravenette slipped you a soft smile. He looked up to the sky confidently. "It's easy on the track so it will be easy here too!!"

He set down his bag. "Sorry pals, you won't be needed here. This is mine alone." You grabbed his hand. "Even at your peak this would be impossible!" you reasoned. Koga looked at you, his gaze sad and bittersweet with that smile on his face. "I can do it. I'll pass the baton to you," he smirked, putting back on the confident facade. "I run faster in a relay. So believe in me and wait right here." The others looked at him doubtfully. "I'd like to believe you, but..."

  Tears were now starting to fall from both yours and Haruo's faces. "I love you" your (e/c) gaze locked with the honey-colored ones before you. "I love you too." you choked out. You grabbed Koga's waist and pulled him into a soft final kiss. Both of you knew that this would be the last time you two would see each other. You both hugged tightly, Koga's silent sobs broke your heart, and you ran your hands through the boy's black hair. "Please don't..." you whispered.

Koga looked up and gave you a brave smile. He stood at the edge of the water, stretching and preparing to run. "I am Haruo Koga, the superstar of this town. Watch closely and remember!" He got into a starting position. "Watch a great Japanese man run. Chest thrust out, legs lifted high, for victory! For life!"

Then he ran. He ran like his life depended on it, as you watched close to the edge. With the data in hand, he darted back. He threw the cartridge to you, who caught it and still had one hand outstretched to grab your lover. His eyes locked with yours, that same bittersweet smile on his face.

And then the waves swept him away, and that was the last you would see of him.

"NO!" you yelled, darting to the water. Kite and Ayumu grabbed your arms and held you back.

"He's gone." Kite spat at you, tears running down his face. "NO! NO WE CAN STILL SAVE HIM! LET ME GO!" you screamed, thrashing around as wild, violent sobs tore its way through your throat. Then you collapsed to a mess onto the floor, shaking and crying as the others tried to comfort you.

After the rescue, you never forgot Koga. You kept his belongings that were in the bag with him at all times, and you were never able to fall in love again.

Sometime I think I’m just looking for reasons to suspect I have adhd, but this is day 3 of not being able to think about anything but japan sinks 2020. It’s literally 10 episodes and a combined 2.5hrs long. I’ve looked at literally every tumblr post about it. I’m currently crocheting Kogas hat.
