It’s WEEKEND 4 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: I’m Living On: An Artist You Would Have Liked To Collaborate With Bowie. Julia Jacklin - Pre Pleasure (Polyvinyl, 2022) Jacklin, a marvelous singer-songwriter from Australia, is a romantic at heart and I could see Bowie connecting with that. She also shows off a sleeker side in I Was Neon, which may be my favorite song from the album. So, I can hear them collaborating on something sleek and romantic with wonderful results! Thanks for a fun challenge! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn-nXt5gJDJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It WAS weekend 2 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: Soundtrack To Your Life Kenyon Hopkins - The Yellow Canary OST (Verve, 1963) Ever since I heard Kenyon Hopkins for the first time a few decades ago, his jazzy, dark-hued film scores have been a part of the soundtrack to my life. If you’re unfamiliar, you could compare him to Henry Mancini or Lalo Schifrin (who plays piano on this record), but he never got sappy or silly like either of them. Straight up composed jazz, often with Latin strains, and featuring the best players around. Besides Schifrin, this album also features luminaries like Clark Terry, Kenny Burrell, and George Duvivier, among others. I have no idea if the movie, which stars Pat Boone, is any good, but the album gets my highest recommendation! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CnnJEfFg6jO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s week 2 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: I’m A Blackstar: An Album That Confronts You With A Challenging Topic. Lou Reed - Legendary Hearts (RCA, 1983) Although this album does have its blissful moments and is mostly gentler than The Blue Mask (even Robert Quine’s skronk is toned down), there is more than a hint of darkness on several songs. For example, The Last Shot, a song about addiction, contains the filling classic lines: I remember when I quit pretty good See this here's where I chipped my tooth I shot a vein in my neck and I coughed up a quaalude On my last shot My last shot Then there’s Betrayed, a song about relationships haunted by the past: Three of us lie in this bed Night of infamy One of us lies on our back Her father's in her head And quick she turns And slaps my face And with her eyes open wide she screams I hate you i hate you i hate you But she's looking right past me Betrayed by the one who says she loves you By the one who says she needs you Above all other men Betrayed by her fragile, vicious beauty Her father did his duty And I lay down betrayed. But Lou was never afraid to go where his muse, informed by life experience and pitiless observation, took him. And the world of music and literature is all the richer for it! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CnSNjYcAo7d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s Post 2 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: We’re Absolute Beginners: Favorite Debut Album. Killing Joke - s/t (Editions EG, 1980) Hard to pick one, but this would definitely be in my z top ten debut albums of all time - set a standard and created a new sound that rippled outward through the ensuing decades…ask Metallica or Nine Inch Nails, to name just two, and they will know what’s up. Jimmy Page was also a big fan. If you haven’t heard it, prepare thyself to deal with an uncompromising blend of jagged guitars, harsh, declamatory vocals, pile-driving yet danceable rhythms, and machine-link synths. The album seems to say, rather than try to prevent nuclear disaster, why not create a soundtrack for it? Extraordinary. #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CnLV31drUHw/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s Week 1 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: Absolute Beginners - Your First Vinyl Purchase. Various Artists - Tommy: The Movie OST (Polydor, 1975) I’ve told this story before, about 10-year-old me becoming obsessed with Elton John’s Pinball Wizard, which came wafting out of my AM radio (which was shaped like knight’s helmet!) on a very regular basis. Not regular enough, however, because I scraped up all my money, crumpled bills and scattered coins, and entrusted it to my mother, who was working at a design firm near Sam Goody in midtown Manhattan. She brought this home and I put it on in the living room (it would be another year before I had my own stereo) and…what the heck? Who were Ann-Margaret and Oliver Reed and why were they on my record? I had a lot to learn about buying records, it seemed, but I did like being able to play Pinball Wizard whenever I wanted and also found Tina Turner’s Acid Queen and Eric Clayton’s Eyesight To The Blind to be OK. Then one day, my little knight’s head radio played a different version of Pinball Wizard by a band called The Who…my stomach sank as it was obviously superior to the florid cover by Elton. Another life lesson…but I learned fast - my next album was Revolver by The Beatles! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/Cm7ZE6NgO7a/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It’s day 31 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: Heroes - A Bowie Album You Would Recommend To Someone Who Has Never Listened To Him Before. David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (RCA, 1972) It might seem obvious, but this is where the legend truly began. Every song is fantastic and there is quite a range of expression here. Plus, Mick Ronson’s guitar and arrangements elevate everything to the level of high art. And I would remind my neophyte listener that this is TO BE PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME! Thanks so much to @talesofvinyl for creating such a rich and adventurous challenge for us Bowie fans. It’s been a marvelous month! Thanks also to my intrepid co-hosts (@nickynogood315, @vinylgaby, and @prettygayrecords) for their creativity and insightful love of Bowie. Finally thanks to all above and everyone who participated and filled my feed with Bowie and more Bowie! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CZagESLgvwL/?utm_medium=tumblr

It’s day 30 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: Sunday - Which Bowie Album Should Not Have Existed. Zero. Zero Bowie albums should not have existed. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are several Bowie albums I don’t like all that much, and many I’ve never bought, like Tonight, but as a fab of artistic process, I see each one as part of the journey he took. If he hadn’t made Tonight or Never Let Me Down, he might never have made The Next Day or Blackstar. Sure he would have made more albums, but they wouldn’t have been THOSE albums. Think of it as a kind of musical butterfly effect. Also, every Bowie album has at least one good song on it, and I treasure those chips from the master’s workbench! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CZX_EbiAo8n/?utm_medium=tumblr

It’s day 28 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: Let’s Dance - Favorite 80s Bowie. Queen & David Bowie - Under Pressure b/w Soul Brother (Elektra, 1981) Scary Monsters practically invented “the eighties” but this was more in the 80s, if you know what I mean. Only the second time Queen got my $$, it’s a completely perfect song. When Bowie comes in it’s such a beautiful contrast to Freddie Mercury that it makes me like him more. Not to mention the rhythm track - a game-changer!! “It’s the terror of knowing what this world is about/watching some good friends screaming ‘let me out!’” #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge https://www.instagram.com/p/CZSyuewgYSX/?utm_medium=tumblr

It’s day 27 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: All The Madmen - show us your Bowie collection. Here’s my Bowie collection, including CD’s and a book or two, circa 2012. Not only did I not know the glories yet to come (The Next Day and Blackstar, not to mention Nothing Has Changed or the copy Tin Machine II I finally got) but I also have a much better camera now. It’s day 26 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: The Prettiest Star - Most Beautiful Bowie Vinyl or Cover. David Bowie - Space Oddity through Scary Monsters Because all of these are vintage pressings, I don’t have any of the cool colors or special editions. Also, I’ve shared all my vinyl already! So here’s that magnificent original run, all together. It’s day 25 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: A Reality Tour - A Bowie Tour You Would Have Loved To See LIVE! David Bowie - Aladdin Sane (RCA, 1973) I was lucky enough to see Bowie twice: first on the Serious Moonlight tour in 1983 and next on the Reality Tour in 2003. Both times at Madison Square Garden and both times FANTASTIC! But that just means that the basic answer to this question is EVERY OTHER TOUR. However, for the purpose of this prompt, I’m going to select not a tour but a specific concert: Radio City Music Hall, February 15th, 1973. I’ve listened to the bootleg many times and, since I’ve been to RCMH a few times, I can picture everything in my mind…but then there’s one moment when the taper (or their friend) says, “Wow…I’ve never seen anything like it!” That moment gave me much comfort in the wake of Bowie’s death, as further proof of his uniqueness. Then there’s also the fact that Mick Ronson, Mike Garson, and the rest play as if their lives depended on it. What a show!! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge @davidbowie @rcarecords https://www.instagram.com/anearfulmusic/p/CZLJQySgkZQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

It’s day 24 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: Hunky Dory - First Bowie Album You Would Pass On To Your Child. David Bowie - Fashions (RCA, 1982) What better collection - a literal ALBUM, in fact - with which to begin a very special Bowie collection? Taking you nearly all they way through his RCA years, from 1969 to 1980 (no Baal), it could be a perfect introduction to his oeuvre. There’s even one non-LP b-side - a rarity in his RCA catalog - of his cover version of Chuck Berry’s Round And Round. Moreover, every disc (swipe left) looks simply smashing! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge @davidbowie @rcarecords #glamrock #artrock #classicrock https://www.instagram.com/p/CZIlry7glfO/?utm_medium=tumblr

It’s day 23 of the @bowievinylchallenge hosted by @talesofvinyl: Station To Station - A Wonderful Bowie Album For A Long Ride. David Bowie Narrates Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf with Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra (RCA Red Seal, 1978) “Are you sitting comfortably?” I’m remembering long drives when my kids were little and realizing this would have been a great choice to keep them entertained! In fact, Bowie recorded it with his son, Duncan Jones (then called “Zowie Bowie”) in mind. Instead we made do with either customized mixtapes or tons of Beatles. Sometimes when my youngest was very fussy the only thing that would calm him down was what we called “dinosaurs fighting in a thunderstorm,” which was actually Stravinsky’s Rite Of Spring, which he got hooked on from many viewings of Disney’s Fantasia (on Laserdisc, believe it or not!). But Bowie does a really nice job, giving his all to the different voices. It’s a little classier than the one I had growing up, which was narrated by Bob Keeshan, aka Captain Kangaroo! #vinyl #vinylcollection #vinylgram #vinylgeek #vinylcollector #vinylcollection #records #vinylchallenge #vinylcommunity #januaryvinylchallenge #bowievinylchallenge @davidbowie @rcarecords @philorch #prokofiev #eugeneormandy #classicalmusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CZF3LxBALV6/?utm_medium=tumblr
