This meme was taken from the Instagram page @janeaustenmeme
The meme perfectly encapsulates Fanny Dashwood's character from Sense and Sensibility, especially her almost comedic lack of empathy. The image, featuring a dialogue between Fanny and Edward Ferrars, hilariously highlights how Fanny brushes off the serious grief of the Dashwood sisters with a dismissive "Yes, very sad. Anyway…"
Fanny Dashwood’s callousness is evident from her first appearance in the novel, a depiction of which has been shown in the meme above. Shortly after the passing of her father-in-law, she arrives unannounced at Norland park and takes possession showing little regard for the grieving family. Her cold-hearted nature is further revealed in her conversation with her husband John about providing financial support to his stepmother and half-sisters. Fanny systematically convinces John to reduce his planned assistance, arguing that the Dashwood women will be comfortable without additional money. Her logic can be described as cold and selfish, prioritizing her own family's wealth over the well-being of her in-laws.
Fanny's response in the meme, which demonstrates her eagerness to move on to other topics after Edward brings up the Dashwood girls' recent father loss, clearly captures her self-centered attitude. Her incapacity to dwell on subjects that do not directly impact her or yield her gain stands in stark contrast to the more thoughtful and sympathetic nature of characters such as Elinor and Marianne Dashwood.
This scene is a great representation of Fanny's personality throughout the book. Even though she comes from the same family, she frequently gives the impression that she is totally cut off from any true familial love or obligation, often putting her own personal family's money and social standing above everything else. This meme is a critical criticism on her personality as well as a humorous diversion from her callousness, which it masterfully illustrates through humor.
The inclusion of this specific moment from a modern TV series heightens the humor and helps current viewers understand and relate to the coldness of the historical figure.

I found this on Instagram ( @ janeaustenmeme). It is a photo of Elinor and Edward from the Sense and Sensibility movie with a text box at the top that says, “She is everything… and he’s just Ken.” This is in reference to a popular meme format that was circulating during 2023 when Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was everywhere this past summer. The movie had a quote, “Barbie has a great day every day, but Ken only has a great day if Barbie notices him”, which was a joke on how Barbie is, literally, everything, and Ken is much more just like an accessory to Barbie. In short, Barbie is wonderful whereas Ken is just… there. The meme aims to compare Edward to Ken and vice versa with Barbie and Elinor.
I pictured this meme as something I think that Marianne would reshare/post/etc if she was on social media. In the beginning of Sense and Sensibility, us readers immediately find out that Marianne is not a member of the Edward Ferrars fan club. Edward Ferrars is described in a very Ken-like fashion, as if he’s also just “there”. This is what Marianne says about him: “Edward is very amiable, and I love him tenderly. But yet – he is not the kind of young man – there is something wanting – his figure is not striking; it has none of that grace which I should expect in the man who could seriously attach my sister” (Austen 15). She later goes on to essentially say that he also does not have any taste, he does not know much about Elinor’s drawings, and he’s “spiritless” when reading. Everything Marianne says about Edward here gives me the notion that she sees her sister as “everything” whereas she sees Edward as just a plain, ordinary guy — exactly like Barbie and Ken.

I just found out today that Pride and Prejudice (2005) has an alternative ending. Altough I feel betrayed because I have been living a lie all these years watching the original version I forgive because my life is complete now. I’ll die happily. #mostardently

It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that witty discussions over lightsaber fighting is a wonderful way to spend an evening.

Werbung. 🥰😏 #janeausten #janeaustenfan #janeaustenquote #janeaustenbooks #janeaustenquotes #janeaustenbookclub #janeaustenmemes #janeaustenjuly #janeaustenhumor #janeaustenforever #janeaustenmuseum #janeaustencentre #janeaustenhouse #janeausten200 #janeaustenaddict #janeaustenlovers #janeaustenstyle #janeaustensociety #janeaustenfans #janeaustenlives #janeaustenhousemuseum #janeaustenbookstagram #janeaustenemma #janeaustenshouse #janeaustenpersuasion #janeaustenevening #janeaustenbookcovers https://www.instagram.com/p/CCyvr5DAFO_/?igshid=1iy17st07c3ug

Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Thomas Hardy OM was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, especially William Wordsworth David Herbert Lawrence was an English writer and poet. His collected works represent, among other things, an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. Some of the issues Lawrence explores are sexuality, emotional health, vitality, spontaneity, and instinct #tukkbook #GoodBookMonth #janeaustenball #janeaustensocietyofnorthamerica #janeaustenhouse #janeaustenbooks #janeaustenforever #janeaustenhumor #janeausten #janeaustenshouse #janeaustenfestival #janeaustensociety #janeaustenquote #janeaustenjuly #janeaustenlover #janeaustenknits #janeaustenlovers #janeaustenaddict #janeaustenquilt #janeaustenmuseum #janeaustenemma #janeaustenbrasil #janeaustenfan #janeaustenbath #janeaustenstyle #janeaustenmemes #janeaustenbookclub #janeaustenquotes https://www.instagram.com/p/B0uxSvBgQsb/?igshid=6f5lfme2o6by
