Four books that have made me feel understood as a woman. Raw emotions, struggles, incredible psychological depth. 10/10 recommend!

She thought about it constantly but mostly she just tried to convince herself that this pain she was feeling was irrational.

Why is there such a tenderness in me to want to take care of someone, to help stop the pain of someone who caused me so much pain?

book: How to Fall Out of Love Madly
author: Jana Casale
rating: 10/10
"Internalized was the word, and terror was the feeling."
first, i’ll talk about the plot. while the blurb on the book cover makes it seem somewhat confusing, it is really simplistic. the book also isn’t focused on the plot, it’s more focused on how each character is experiencing different things and how they are reacting to them. the book has lists of monologues, flashbacks, and pages that only explore exactly what the characters are thinking and feeling. the three main characters are all women who interact with one another, but are still living very different lives. honestly, when i read multiple pov books, i find i get bored by one or two of the characters. that was not the case with this book. i was expecting to relate to only one character, but again, this was not the case. i found myself relating deeply with all three women.

like i said before, this book explores so many aspects of the female experience and covers a wide variety of topics very well. i’ve really enjoyed reading about how each woman works through her feelings based on each experience she has. it is really nice to read a book by a woman about women and what it’s like to be a woman. in my world lit class we’re reading The Virgin Suicides by Jeffery Eugenides, a book where a group of boys try to figure out why five sisters committed suicide. (i could rant about that class for hours, but that’s for another time.) anyway, it was extremely refreshing to read such a modern and personal telling of the varied female experience. if you’re interested in learning about feminism and the female perspective, I would say this book is a great starting point for your research/conversations. i said before it covers a lot of topics, so there’s plenty to consider!
i really loved this book, and i would definitely recommend reading it. it got me out of a reading slump the moment i picked it up. happy reading!

Book Review - The Girl Who Never Read Noam Chomsky by Jana Casale The Girl Who Never Read Noam Chomsky goes through the life of a girl named Leda, starting when she is a college student in her early 20s until her death. More chapters are spent on her early life than her later years. Nothing particularly exciting or extraordinary happens to her. She graduates with a degree in English and plans to go to grad school and become a writer, but then she moves to California with her nice boyfriend and they eventually marry. A lot of reviews say she and the book are dull, but I disagree. Instead I found the book to be very honest and relatable, and reading it was comforting because Leda has the same worries that most women have. Casale’s prose is quite nice without being overly verbose. I like how each chapter is usually “a day in the life” rather than only major life events. Here’s a random excerpt: Leda was planning on ordering the grilled cheese and tomato with French fries. Salad for lunch was a distant notion she associated with mortgages and weddings. Elle ate salad now. Last week they’d had lunch, and she’d ordered some kind of steak dish with cheese melted on it. “No, I’d love to try it!” Leda said. She was not about to eat fried food in front of paper Elle. The waitress came over and Elle ordered with fast control. Her voice clicking on words like “iced tea” and “dressing on the side.” Leda though of how best to order. It was a thin thought sequestered between futile notions of public consciousness. She came to the notion to use the word ”just” a lot and flutter her hands. “I’ll just have the Cobb salad too. And just water is fine.” she said, fluttering her hands. The waitress nodded. “Just” had been successful.

What she loved most about sitting at the coffee shop was not the coffee or the shop but the brief, listless feeling it gave her of having her life together.

The Girl Who Never Read Noam Chomsky

That's what a person does. We make excuses for other people. We invent reasons why something is off or odd or wrong. We give people a latitude of empathy that sometimes is warranted and sometimes isn't. That's what a person does. Or at least that's what a woman does.
