As a thirty-year-old adult, sitting in Ummi’s kitchen, listening to her tell me these stories, I still felt like a child. I had lived on my own since I was nineteen, but I spent years feeling intimidated by her and one link away from being close to her. Figuring out the right thing to say that wouldn’t sound disgruntled or begrudging was a challenge, because I was both at the time. —N. Jamiyla Chisholm/The Community: A Memoir

Jamiyla Lowe’s fantastical, mixed-media illustrations contain both an absorbing morbidity and humor. Her creatures are often unsettling in their ambiguity, often stemming from fictional worlds or plucked from nightmares. See more on HiFructose.com.

Instead of the devotional refuge they?d imagined, the Community was a nightmare of controlled abuse and unspeakable secrets.Forty years later, Jamiyla was ready to excavate and understand a past buried in bad dreams, disturbing memories, and inexplicable rage. Inequalities faced by BIPOC: Black women
Pilar and Lola included a study by McKinsley and Company that declared that Black women are twice as likely to be the breadwinners of their families. Thus, Black women have more expectations of fulfilling childcare and other gendered domestic labors. The economic loss of Black women and the expectations of caregiving has contributed to higher rates of IPV due to lack of any mobility. In the article “COVID-19 Creates Added Danger for Women in Homes With Domestic Violence,” Jamiyla Chisholm added that according to the Department of Justice, “Black women experience domestic violence 35 percent more than White women and 2.5 times the rate of other women of color” (Chisholm, 2020). Chisholm alludes to the notion that women of color are at higher risk for IPV because of their tendency of protecting their partners from racially biased institutions. The experiences of Black women showcases how different social identities can affect one’s life. In the case of Black women, their race and gender dictated their way of navigating their lives. The Covid-19 pandemic enhanced these inequalities because of higher and longer unemployment for women of color. Along with economic instability, Black women are tied to the home longer in order to fulfill childcare and housework responsibilities. The lack of a job and expectation of caregiving has increased IPV in women of color because they are forced to be at home by different sources.
