Like, the childhood best friends who are constantly shown to understand each other better than the current couple? “Willow” making a painting for Mike and disguising her feelings as El’s? Mike hiding his interests around El but being his true self around Willow? El feeling like a monster around Mike but Willow feeling she’s not a mistake around him? Mike saying that Hawkins isn’t the same without Willow there?

People would be eating that shit up. But no, Will is a boy so people won’t even consider it.

you know what ben is so good actually. he's so empathetic he apologises to a cybermen before killing it. he's so loyal he breaks through brainwashing to protect his friends. he meets jamie and is immediately like yeah, I've got to look out for this guy. he decks a guy who hits on polly when she isn't interested. he and jamie have a routine they often do where they pretend to fight to throw the bad guys off. he's a short king. he's even bisexual. what's not to love.

The thing about the whole “why can’t guys be intimate with each other without it being gay” or “can’t people just be friends,” is that it could be a solid point if Will wasn’t canonically in love with Mike. That erases any possibility of their interactions being purely platonic, because we already have confirmation that one party is having romantic feelings, so who’s to say the other isn’t as well? Sure, Mike keeping a binder full of Will’s drawings, being glued to his side all throughout season 2, etc etc. could just be best friend behavior, but Will’s feelings put everything about their relationship in another light.
