On This Day In Royal History . 23 November 1589 . King James VI & I married Anne of Denmark . ◾ A suitable marriage, was necessary to reinforce his monarchy, & the choice fell on the fourteen-year-old Anne of Denmark, younger daughter of the Protestant Frederick II. . ◾ Shortly after a proxy marriage in Copenhagen in August 1589, Anne sailed for Scotland but was forced by storms to the coast of Norway. . ◾ On hearing the crossing had been abandoned, James, in what Willson calls “the one romantic episode of his life”, sailed from Leith with a three-hundred-strong retinue to fetch Anne personally. . ◾ The couple were married formally at the Bishop’s Palace in Oslo on 23 November &, after stays at Elsinore & Copenhagen & a meeting with Tycho Brahe, returned to Scotland on 1 May 1590. . ◾ By all accounts, James was at first infatuated with Anne, & in the early years of their marriage seems always to have showed her patience & affection. . ◾ The royal couple produced three children who survived to adulthood: Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, who died of typhoid fever in 1612, aged 18; Elizabeth, later queen of Bohemia; & Charles, his successor. Anne died before her husband in March 1619. . . 👑 James VI and I (b.19 June 1566 – d.27 March 1625) was King of Scotland as James VI from 24 July 1567 and King of England & Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish & English crowns on 24 March 1603 until his death. The kingdoms of Scotland & England were individual sovereign states, with their own parliaments, judiciary, & laws, though both were ruled by James in personal union. . 👑 Anne of Denmark (Danish: Anna; b.12 December 1574 – d.2 March 1619) was Queen consort of Scotland, England, & Ireland as the wife of King James VI & I, Anne was the second daughter of King Frederick II of Denmark. . . . #OnThisDayInHistory #ThisDayInHistory #TheYear1589 #KingJamesI #JamesIofEngland #JamesI #JamesVI #JamesVIofScotland #KingJamesVI #HouseofStuart #Stuarts #History #EnglishMonarchy #oslo #ScottishMonarchy #BritishMonarchy #D23Nov #otd #historyfacts #RoyalHistory #OnThisDay #RoyalWedding #wedding #Weddingday #Theking #KingofEngland #Kingofscotland (at Oslo, Norway) https://www.instagram.com/p/CH87x_Wjn1f/?igshid=1uq6e64rldnpi

King James VI & I’s Anti-Smoking Campaign . . A counterblaste to tobacco book, 1604 . Written by King James VI & I . . ◼ Tobacco was introduced into Europe from South America in the mid-16th century, and it is traditionally said that Sir Walter Raleigh promoted its use in England. . ◼ King James I, soon after his accession to the throne (24 March 1604), joined in the anti-smoking campaign with this vehement denunciation, to which he punningly refers as ‘the fume of an idle brain’. . ◼ In his peroration he calls tobacco-smoking a ‘custome lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the brains, daungerouse to the Lungs, and in the blacke stinking fume thereof, neerest resembling the horrible Stigian smoke of the pit that is bottomelesse’. . . The king was well ahead of the times ! . . 🇬🇧🇬🇧 This book is available FREE at our Amazon UK Kindle store. On This Day In History . 12 April 1606 . The Union Flag was adopted as the flag of English and Scottish ships. . . ◼ King James VI of Scotland had inherited the English & Irish thrones in 1603 as James I, thereby uniting the crowns of England, Scotland, & Ireland in a personal union, although the three kingdoms remained separate states. . ◼ On 12 April 1606, a new flag to represent this regal union between England and Scotland was specified in a royal decree, according to which the flag of England (a red cross on a white background, known as St George's Cross), & the flag of Scotland (a white saltire on a blue background, known as the Saltire or St Andrew's Cross), would be joined together, forming the flag of England & Scotland for maritime purposes. . 👑 By the King: 'Whereas, some differences hath arisen between Our subjects of South & North Britaine travelling by Seas, about the bearing of their Flagges: For the avoiding of all contentions hereafter. We have, with the advice of our Council, ordered: That from henceforth all our Subjects of this Isle & Kingdome of Great Britaine, & all our members thereof, shall beare in their main-toppe the Red Crosse, commonly called St George's Crosse, & the White Crosse, commonly called St Andrew’s Crosse, joyned together according to the forme made by our heralds, & sent by Us to our Admerall to be published to our Subjects: & in their fore-toppe our Subjects of South Britaine shall weare the Red Crosse onely as they were wont, & our Subjects of North Britaine in their fore-toppe the White Crosse onely as they were accustomed' . 🇬🇧 King James also began to refer to a "Kingdom of Great Britaine", although the union remained a personal one. . . . #onthisdayinhistory #ThisDayInHistory #UnionFlag #UnionJack #GreatBritain #UnitedKingdom #RoyalNavy #History #JamesIofEngland #JamesVIofscotland #Britishmonarchy #Flag #ships #sailing #England #Scotland #Theking #Houseofstuart #Historic #Heritage #historyfacts (at United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwLDkknlIc7/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18vlqmte75ks4

On this day in history . 27 March 1625 . King James VI & I died aged 58 . . ◼ After about the age of fifty, James suffered increasingly from arthritis, gout & kidney stones. He also lost his teeth & drank heavily. The king was often seriously ill during the last year of his life, leaving him an increasingly peripheral figure, rarely able to visit London. One theory is that James may have suffered from porphyria, a disease of which his descendant George III of the United Kingdom exhibited some symptoms. James described his urine to physician Théodore de Mayerne as being the "dark red colour of Alicante wine". The theory is dismissed by some experts, particularly in James's case, because he had kidney stones which can lead to blood in the urine, colouring it red. . ◼ In early 1625, James was plagued by severe attacks of arthritis, gout & fainting fits, & in March fell seriously ill with tertian ague & then suffered a stroke. . ◼ James finally died at Theobalds House on 27 March during a violent attack of dysentery, with the Duke of Buckingham at his bedside. . ◼ James was widely mourned. For all his flaws, he had largely retained the affection of his people, who had enjoyed uninterrupted peace & comparatively low taxation during the Jacobean era. "As he lived in peace," remarked the Earl of Kellie, "so did he die in peace, & I pray God our king [Charles I] may follow him". . 👑 James VI and I (born. 19 June 1566) was King of Scotland as James VI from 24 July 1567 & King of England & Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish & English crowns on 24 March 1603 until his death. DID YOU KNOW? . As far back as 1604, & well ahead of his time,  King James VI of Scotland & I of England wrote 'A Counterblaste to Tobacco' in which he expressed his distaste for tobacco, particularly tobacco smoking. As such, it is one of the earliest anti-tobacco publications. . . The king wrote; . "Have you not reason then to bee ashamed, & to forbeare this filthie noveltie, so basely grounded, so foolishly received & so grossely mistaken in the right use thereof? In your abuse thereof sinning against God, harming your selves both in persons & goods, & raking also thereby the markes & notes of vanitie upon you: by the custome thereof making your selves to be wondered at by all forraine civil Nations, & by all strangers that come among you, to be scorned & contemned." . "A custome lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the braine, dangerous to the Lungs, & in the blacke stinking fume thereof, neerest resembling the horrible Stigian smoke of the pit that is bottomelesse."  .
