For those with knowledge in the world of aristocracy, the Collins’ were a big deal. They rubbed shoulders with royals, with dukes and lords, and had their own titles and lush land in the English countryside. They caused a stir when William Collins the Third fell for a Malaysian flight attendant named Esah when on a business trip, but his family ultimately accepted the arrangement, holding Esah to very high, nearly impossible standards during the early stages of their relationship and marriage.

Once James was born, the expectations were transferred to him, and he lived a more strict life than that of his cousins. His parents eventually divorced when he was seven, and his father remarried a woman more in his family tastes. Once they had their own children - a pair of twin girls - James was sent to live with his mother. Unfortunately, Esah couldn’t provide a stable homelife, as she had went back to being a flight attendant and was never home, and so they arranged a deal to send James off to boarding school.

After a trial and error period in various English boarding schools due to James’ surliness as he went through puberty, William decided to send James to one in America. James acclimated to American school structure easily, and became a popular student, not only gaining top grades but seemed to have a lot of friends, and caught the eyes of a lot of girls.

One girl in particular was that of Maya Castillo. She was a recent transfer, and a wild-card, giving the school a breath of fresh air it so desperately needed. James was hooked immediately, and they started an amazing, passionate affair.

It all came crashing down when, after receiving great news he was granted early acceptance into college, Maya came to him with not-so great news. She was pregnant. And she was positive the baby was his. 

Though he wasn’t as angry as he was as a young teenager, James lashed out there. He could see his future being snatched from him, years of hard work no longer meaning anything. He could already see the disappointment in his mother’s eyes, hear the yells of his father for not being more careful. James denied any involvement, accusing Maya of not knowing the true parentage. The words were vicious and cruel, and he regretted them the moment they came out, but he didn’t take them back. One of his many flaws was his selfishness, and it was a move that was beyond selfish.

Soon after, Maya dropped out, and James continued life as normal, not telling anyone what he knew. He went to college, became a journalist, and moved back to the UK. He became a notable writer at a notorious paper that favoured his father’s family and friendship more than that of the everyday person, but it paid well and he was highly respected in his field.

It got slightly repetitive though, he realised, and after yet another break-up with another girlfriend on the lack of an engagement ring, James realised the women that his father or friends set him up with were just interested in the Collins name, and not the man behind it. He opted to leave his cushy life behind to create a new identity for himself, picking one place he was sure no one would know him: Anophtopia.

They absolutely knew it, because her aunt said so, and they simply allowed that van to be towed and they had no care at all,” Sulton added.Sulton also said Collins did not activate his body camera, which would have verified the woman’s claim about what she told the officers. Sutton also said other officers did not record the entire interaction on their body cameras.A tow truck took the van to the city’s tow lot, where it remained overnight as temperatures dipped as low at 9 degrees, the lawsuit said.A worker at a neighboring tow lot heard the girl screaming, “I want my mommy!” the next morning.Sulton estimates as many as a dozen city employees or people contracted by the city made contact with the vehicle but did not check it. “If they want to point the finger at other city workers who, hours later, had to have contact with this vehicle, again, that’s just more trying to deflect the blame away from themselves,” Sulton said.Disciplinary records included in the lawsuit, show Collins and Garcia were reprimanded for not searching the vehicle.Neither a spokesperson for the police department nor City Attorney Tearman Spencer responded to requests for comment. The Energy Plan

This book on eating smart was recommended to me by my wonderful physio Laura Jamieson. 

The author James Collins has worked with elite sports people to help them to learn how to get the right nutrition to feel their best all the time. I like the way The Energy Plan is explained as a lifestyle rather than a diet. Like many people, I have tried a great number of diets with varying degrees of success. But I’ve found that feeling and looking good isn’t about being on a diet. It’s about planning, learning and being realistic about what works for you. 

James talks about planning your intake around your activity, which really makes a lot of sense. But this does call into question some of our eating habits - for instance why have your largest meal of the day in the evening, when you are only going to sit on the sofa and watch telly for a couple of hours and then go to bed. I’ve found this a challenging habit to change, not least because my other half likes to have his main meal in the evening. Some tweaks I’ve introduced, that do help to reduce the density of dinner, are reducing the starchy carbs, increasing colourful vegetables and focusing on healthy proteins. The biggest learning has been that office workers like me, with only a moderate level of physical activity, really do not need to eat as many carbs as we do. In fact as I tend to do my workouts before breakfast, I should really focus on having a decent level of protein, healthy fats and nutrient rich fruits for brekkie to help repair my body after exercise. 

This book has really made me think about what I consume and when. The hard part of this is actually doing something about it on an ongoing basis!
