okay so because of who i am as a person i obviously have not stopped thinking about the ellsworth poem since i have learned of it. this one:
some things to note:
• "skoal" is norwegian for "cheers". so he‘s literally toasting him with this poem. also it shows that they were very familiar with each other and ellsworth took an interest in amundsens culture and mother tongue.
• it is dated september 3, 1928. a couple of months after amundsens disappearance. this is as much a toast as it is a eulogy. this is probably a good indicator of when ellsworth considered amundsen no longer missing but dead. feeling great and normal about that.
but i wanted to know more!!! in the hopes of finding more context for this poem i tried looking it up but i couldn‘t find anything in relation to ellsworth and/or amundsen. so i tried to find the poem itself. and i did.
ellsworth didn’t write it, it is by none other than famous romantic poet william wordsworth! but this is not where my search ended. because the part that ellsworth quoted is not the full poem.
you see. the full poem is titled „Lines written by Capt. James upon his leaving Charlton Island, where many of his Ship's Crew had died during the winter, which they passed there A. D. 1631-2.“
so of course the question arises: who was this captain james who overwintered in charlton island in 1631-2?
captain thomas james was a welsh captain and explorer and in the years 1631 and 1632 he set out to find the northwest passage. he did not succeed and had to turn back. he wrote a report on it which you can read here on the internet archive.
wordsworths poem was inspired by this tale (some say the ancient mariner was inspired by it as well) and clearly ellsworth put a lot of thought into his choice. chosing a poem about someone looking for the northwest passage to dedicate it to the guy who found it!!!!! man
conclusion: ellsworth did not write the poem for amundsen, but he did carefully choose one that fit him so perfectly, choosing as well the lines which are the most touching and personal.
anyway, here‘s the whole poem below the cut because it’s actually really good and makes me very sad:
I were unkind unless that I did shed
Before I part some tears upon our Dead:
And when my eyes be dry I will not cease
I heart to pray their bones may rest in peace:
Their better parts, (good souls) I know were given,
With an intent they should return to heaven:
Their lives they spent to the last drop of blood.
Seeking God's glory and their Country's good.
And as a valiant Soldier rather dies.
Than yields his courage to his enemies,
And stops their way with his hew'd flesh, when death
Hath quite deprived him of his strength and breath;
So have they spent themselves; and here they lie,
A famous mark of our Discovery.
We that survive, perchance may end our days
In some employment meriting no praise,
And in a dunghill rot, when no man names
The memory of us but to our shames.
They have outlived this fear, and their brave ends
Will ever be an honor to their friends.—
Why drop you so mine eyes? Nay rather pour
My sad departure in a solemn shower.
The winter's cold that lately froze our blood.
Now, were it so extreme, might do this good,
As make these tears bright pearls, which I would lay
Tombed safely with you till doom's fatal day:
That in this solitary place, where none
Will ever come to breathe a sigh or groan,
Some remnant might be extant, of the true
And faithful love, I ever tendered you.
Oh! rest in peace, dear Friends, and let it be
No pride to say, the sometime part of me.
What pain and anguish doth afflict the head.
The heart and stomach, when the limbs are dead.—
So grieved I kiss your graves, resolved to die,
A Foster-Father to your memory.

IMAGES: B-52 and B-1 bombers perform rare joint flight with Gripens over the Swedish capital
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 03/06/2024 - 21:57in Military
With Sweden about to officially join NATO in the coming days, the U.S. Air Force celebrated March 6 with a rare double overfly of bombers, with a B-52 Stratofortress and a B-1 Lancer flying over Stockholm, accompanied by the Swedish Air Force's JAS39 Gripens fighters.
The U.S. Air Forces in Europe noted in a statement that the bombers flew over the Avicii Arena, the Swedish Parliament, Stockholm Arlanda Airport and much more during the overfly.
A spokesman for the U.S. Air Force Global Attack Command said that the B-52 came from the 5ª Bomber Wing at Minot Air Base, North Dakota, while the B-1 came from the 28ª Bomber Wing at Ellsworth Air Base, South Dakota.
Both bombers planned the CONUS-CONUS mission, which means that they took off from the U.S. and intended to return without landing. The B-1 was diverted, however, to the RAF Base in Fairford, in the United Kingdom, said the spokesman, confirming sightings and reports on social networks.
"The training was a great success and is based on our already excellent relationship," added the spokesman.
“The strong and lasting bond between the United States and Sweden, rooted in mutual interests and shared values, is prepared to reach new heights,” USAFE commander General James Hecker said in a statement. “As Sweden prepares to join the NATO Alliance as its 32ndº member, we eagerly anticipate the deepening of our collaboration with our Swedish Allies. Initiatives such as this joint passage are just the beginning, as we work together to promote international stability and security."
Such missions are signs of support, such as when the B-52s flew over North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia in August 2022. A statement from USAFE at the time said that the mission demonstrated "the commitment and guarantee of the U.S. to the Allies and NATO partners located in Southeast Europe." Similarly, the F-16s fled over Bosnia and Herzegovina in January, in a show of force aimed at deterring the "separatist activity" of Bosnian Serbs. In May 2021, the B-52s flew over all NATO nations in a single flight.
The joint flight of the B-52 and B-1, however, is unusual. The Stockholm overfly recorded a quick return after two B-1s returned to Ellsworth on March 1º, concluding a deployment of the Bomber Task Force at Lulea-Kallax Air Base in Sweden. The jets arrived on February 24 and carried out surface attack, air interdiction and approximate air support training with the Swedish Air Force. On the way back, several NATO allies took turns practicing interceptions with the B-1.

Folio Society Presents Batman!
(February 19, 2024) The Folio Society, independent publisher of beautifully illustrated hardback books, in collaboration with DC, will celebrate the 85th anniversary of the first comic book appearance of DC’s Dark Knight Detective with the release of DC: Batman. Created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, Batman first appeared in 1939’s Detective Comics #27 and since then the Dark Knight has stood as a symbol of determination, courage and justice to generations of fans for over 80 years. Batman is one of the most iconic fictional characters in the world, and is a self-made Super Hero, notable not for his super powers, but for his intelligence, determination, and tech savvy.
This collectible compilation includes twelve seminal comics, by a host of iconic writers and artists— including Bill Finger, Bob Kane, Jerry Robinson, Denny O'Neil, Neal Adams, Marshall Rogers, Frank Miller, Dave Mazzucchelli, Alan Moore, Brian Bolland and Kelley Jones—all selected and introduced by former DC President, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of DC, Jennette Kahn. Along with the 320-page one-of-a-kind deluxe book, DC: Batman also comes with a stand-alone replica copy of Batman #1. Scanned in its entirety from an original 1940 copy, the replica copy of the Batman #1 comic book, which includes the original back-up strips and vintage ads and introduces DC’s Clown Prince of Crime, aka The Joker, and The Cat, who would come to be known as Catwoman.
“Created towards the end of the Great Depression by artist Bob Kane with writer Bill Finger, Batman is an icon as familiar as James Bond or Tarzan, one who has evolved to reflect the changing attitudes of the twentieth century,” said Folio Society Head of Editorial, James Rose. “The stories selected for DC: Batman reveal how the character and his billionaire alter-ego Bruce Wayne gradually evolved from the dutiful crimefighter of the 1940s to a man possessed, as crazy as the criminals he puts away. The Caped Crusader faces a rogue’s gallery steeped in gothic horror, from the Weimar cinema-inspired The Joker to the Jekyll/Hyde figure of Two-Face and the Moriarty-like Ra's al Ghul.”
“Trauma is a through-line in the Batman mythology,” writes Jenette Kahn in her introduction. “It has made psychopaths of Batman’s foes and brought him to the edge of madness himself. Batman’s battle is not just against criminals and crime. He fears the day he’ll look into a mirror and see, not Bruce Wayne’s
face, but The Joker’s.” The first woman at the helm of the legendary comic book publisher, Jenette Kahn helped transform comics into a sophisticated art form during her 27-year tenure from 1976 to 2002.
“The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller and Batman: Year One, by Miller and Dave Mazzucchelli, and the terrifying classic The Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland are widely regarded as among the greatest comic books ever created,” said Folio Society Publishing Director, Tom Walker. “These stories changed the graphic medium forever with their combination of cinematic storytelling, shocking violence and literary depth and serve as centerpiece texts for DC: Batman.”

WWE defies the odds, gives the MITB contracts to the right people
Leaving the WWE Universe dumfounded, the massive pro wrestling conglomerate actually managed to put both Money in the Bank contracts on the right people for once.
WWE’s Money in the Bank 2021 is in the history books and it was a barn-burner. Charlotte Flair and Rhea Ripley turned out an instant classic. Roman Reigns and Edge delivered a hell of a main event. And John Cena made his return, foreshadowing a match with Reigns at SummerSlam.
But the highlights of the night were the two Money in the Bank Ladder matches. Conditioned after years of disappointment, fans expected the worst possible outcomes like Brock Lesnar somehow winning an MITB match that he wasn’t involved in the first place. Or WWE screwing up the first Women’s MITB match by having James Ellsworth essentially win it for Carmella.
Yet 2021 beat the odds and two actually deserving winners received the contracts. Nikki A.S.H. won the Women’s MITB contract and Big E won the Men’s MITB contract. These are two fan-favorite wrestlers who have actually worked their entire to earn these shots.
Former 32-time New Extreme Elite Entertainment Intergalactic Heavyweight Champion and the world’s ugliest hobo Biff Tannan may have perfectly summarized the situation perfectly.
WWE is usually their own worst enemy in this situation. Normally, they pull a stunt like giving the contract to Otis and then spend six months figuring out how to get it off of him. Then, they give the contract to The Miz only to have him cash it in and lose the title a week later. That’s how WWE usually handles these situations.
But deep in their hearts, fans know that the company is going to screw this current situation up, too. From a statistical perspective, WWE not totally dropping the ball on two potentially legendary title reigns is extremely unlikely. This is the company who thinks that the WWE Universe still wants to see Hulk Hogan and Bill Goldberg, after all.
Fans are basking in the afterglow of Nikki A.S.H. and Big E’s respective wins until Vince changes his mind and hands their briefcases to whichever part-timer is back this week. Can John Cena hold a Women’s Championship? Fans may be on the verge of finding out.

Meet Captain America
CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS #1 MARCH 1941 BY JOE SIMON AND JACK KIRBY
SYNOPSIS (FROM MARVEL DATABASE)
A short prologue outlines the young men of America joining the army and the threat of the fifth columnists, the nazi spies hidden deep within the American forces. Two fifth columnists in American uniform blow up a local munitions factory that is supplying the local army camp.
Meanwhile, in Washington, D.C., two army generals visit president Franklin Delano Roosevelt and inform him of the threat. They note how every command he makes is sent back to Germany and nothing can be kept secret, even amongst his closest aides. The president asks them what they intend to do. He recommends sending a comic hero like the human torch into the army, and brings in a man named mister Grover, the head of the federal bureau of investigation, who has a plan.
The men all change into their civilian clothes and into a car, where they are taken to an old curio shop. An old woman greets them armed with a gun. She informs them that the formula has been found and it won't disappoint them this time. A man, dressed in lab clothes greets them and ushers them into the viewing gallery of a secret lab, where a frail young man is attached to a machine, and the old woman tears off her mask revealing x-13, one of the best agents. The young man is injected with a liquid and starts to grow until he is above the normal human physique. The doctor also notes that his intelligence and strength are being increased. The doctor christens him captain america and tells him that his duty is to protect the American shores from nazi spies and saboteurs.
Suddenly, one of the army officials, secretly working for the Gestapo, pulls out a gun and shoots the doctor, professor reinstein. A second shot then obliterates the serum that gave Captain America his powers, meaning no more super soldiers can be created. He lets out a third shot, hitting Grover, before cap bursts through the glass and beats him into submission. The barely conscious spy stumbles into a large electrical device, shocking him to death. Cap, now in uniform, is told to have been taking out all of the Nazi threats, while the newspapers wonder "Who is Captain America?".
Meanwhile at an army camp the mascot James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes shows a private named Steve Rogers a news report of caps latest victory, saying how he'd love to meet him. That night, he walks in on Steve changing into the Captain America suit, preparing for more exploits. Having made this discovery, Steve says Bucky must keep his identity secret and he asks if he would like to be his sidekick. They suit up and together run off to stop nazi threats.
Tickets are being sold for the performance of the psychics, Sando (Von Krantz) & Omar, for only ten cents each. On stage, Sando looks into the eyes of a dwarfed Omar. Sando asks Omar what he thinks is to come and his prediction of a terrible accident at Fort Bix is projected onto a crystal ball. At that very instant Fort Bix is shaken by a terrific blast. Meanwhile, Steve and Bucky are reading about the psychics in the newspaper. Bucky thinks they are phony and the two decide to visit the theater. Yet again, the weird performance is repeated while Steve and Bucky are in the audience. This time, Omar sees Hilltown bridge collapsing. Steve and Bucky rush to prevent the disaster but they are too late. The duo returns to the theater to found out how Sando & Omar knew about the disaster. Suddenly, a woman’s shrill cry for help causes Captain America to whirl about. He follows the scream to Sando’s dressing room. A couple of gun men are holding Betsy Ross captured. Sando reveals that he is Von Krantz and has plan a chain of disasters that will destroy the morale of the United States. Betsy Ross reveals that Omar is just a poor idiotic tool. As the battle begins, Von Krantz tries to bomb the place. However, Bucky throws out the bomb through a window. The duo wins and Betsy Ross wants to thank them, but Captain America only says goodnight and leaves.
In a secluded section of town, Rathcone approaches a chessboard with chess pieces that resemble real people. He announces to his agents that Admiral Perkins is giving a lecture tonight and tonight is the night that Admiral must die. Meanwhile, Steve convinces a reluctant Bucky to attend the lecture. As the curtains part at the lecture, the audience is witness to the Admiral’s dead body. A stunned Steve and Bucky change into their costumes to chase down the killer. When Bucky prowls through the darkened alleys, he is watched by a lurking killer, Number 5. As Number 5 and Bucky begin to fight, Captain America jumps in and saves Bucky. The agent refuses to talk but Captain America convinces him too. At that moment, a bullet hits the Nazi agent. Number 5 slumps in death as Captain America wards off a deadly hail of bullets. Cap notices three men, but they can’t catch up to them. The duo decides to go back to Camp Lehigh. Rathcone continues his chess game and plans for General Ellsworth death. That same evening, Mike Duffy tells Steve and Bucky that they are on special duty at the General’s hut. However, the duo finds him dead inside the hut. The next day newspapers announce to the America public another brutal killing in the ranks of the nation’s military command. Rathcone moves onto to his next victims, Captain America and Bucky, by sending out Strangler and Herr Kameleon after them. Later back at the camp, Strangler visits Bucky and fools him into thinking he could solve the killing. That night, Bucky quietly approaches a shabby building. He walks into a trap and sees Ratchone and the chessboard. Bucky tries to run but Rathcone trips him. He waits to kill Bucky because he wants to kill Cap and Bucky at the same time. Finding a note from Bucky, Captain America finds Rathcone’s hideout. A battle begins and Rathcone pulls a gun on him. The duo beats Rathcone and his gang. Captain America calls the F.B.I to report where the criminals are at. Major Fields tells Steve later that he wishes he knew who Captain America was.
A worried Steve and Bucky drop off Major Croy at his home, who has just received a card from the Red Skull. Major Croy believes there is no such person and quickly goes into his home. While reading, the Major gets a surprise visit from the Red Skull. With his wide hypnotic eyes, the Red Skull gazes deep into the Major’s eyes and tells him to “look until you see death.” Captain America hears the news and decides he wants to handle this case without Bucky. However, it’s Bucky who accidentally discovers the Red Skull’s headquarters. While standing out on the rooftops, one of the Red Skull’s henchmen, Slug, finds Bucky. Slug brings him to the Red Skull not knowing that it’s Captain America’s partner. Cap finds the headquarters himself and a fight breaks out. In the midst of the fray the Red Skull departs through a secret exit. The duo decides to return to Camp Lehigh.
The next day, George Maxon of the Maxon Aircraft Corporation comes in person to watch his new plane take an army test. The plane catches on fire while in the air and crashes, killing the men inside. Maxon is sadden by the plane’s crash, but Steve is only concerned about the men in the plane.
Later, General Charles Manor goes home and gets a package from the Red Skull. As the General opens the package, the Red Skull appears in the room and kills him. Mildred Manor hears the struggle and with a gun in her hand rushes into the room. As the Red Skull smacks her down, he hears footsteps and like an angry tornado Captain America bursts into the room. Cap knocks the Red Skull’s mask off and it shatters. It’s revealed that it’s George Maxon and he has been using hypodermic needles to kill his victims. Another fight breaks out and Maxon rolls over this own hypodermic needle. Bucky asks why Captain America didn’t stop Maxon from rolling over. Cap says he is not talking about it and he calls the F.B.I to tell them that Maxon committed suicide. The F.B.I finds a note that Maxon was working for Hitler.
REVIEW
If you look at this comic-book without looking at the context, you may think it’s just another Golden Age comic-book. But it has one main difference to the other books of the time. Jack Kirby.
While Kirby’s style wasn’t there yet, his dynamic layouts are already a thing. His characters are trying to escape the panels, the layouts are more flexible, this isn’t a comic-strip adapted to a page anymore, this is a different animal.
The issue contains several first appearances, but the stories are not exactly entertaining (from a modern point of view). Perhaps the main issue with these stories is that America wasn’t at war yet, and it is all about combating spies. A war would broaden the adventures a lot more.
Unlike Robin, Bucky is the sidekick of an enhanced soldier. This is more similar to the Shield’s sidekick, another boy without super-powers in the company of a super-hero. The similarities are too big between both properties, but I can believe that Bucky and the Shield’s sidekicks were conceived around the same time.
As usual, Marvel stories are a bit more aggressive in terms of patriotism than the other publishers, I can imagine this was the main attraction for kids.
I give this issue a score of 9

SmackDown Live | 3rd, July, 2018 Asuka goes one-on-one with James Ellsworth --- James Ellsworth may have dug himself a hole he can’t get out. Tonight on SmackDown, Ellsworth will go one-on-one with Asuka. Ellsworth returned at WWE Money in the Bank to help Carmella retain her SmackDown Women’s Title against The Empress of Tomorrow, and he hasn’t let anyone forget it since. Last week, he took to the ring to call out Asuka. Unfortunately, she was with her family in Japan, but SmackDown LIVE General Manager Paige was happy to oblige Ellsworth and make the match for this week. Is Ellsworth ready for Asuka?

Asparagus Glossy Grape
💖Asparagus: What’s an unpopular opinion you have?- hahahaha i have loads!! i guess in terms of wrestling, i think brock lesnar isn’t that bad and i’m genuinely puzzled by all the hate he gets (i got over the part timer being champ resentment i had for him the first time after his return when he became wwe champ a few years back) like i understand why people don’t like him but the 273627 posts of vehement hatred and overused bork laser jokes, i don’t get lmao. and hmm, what else, omg i actually really like james ellsworth I think he’s so funny and great on the mic, and i just realised the question only asks for one unpopular opinion soooo yeah lmao 💖Glossy Grape: Recommend something to your followers- any heel AJ Styles video from late 2016 to early 2017, preferably the segment where he comes back after being fired and he’s wearing a visor and a tank top and acting super cocky, or the week prior to that and the segment where he gets fired and he’s backstage leaving in the bLACK HOODIE😭😭👌🏼👌🏼🔥🔥💦💦 alternatively i’d also like to recommend this one time AJ did commentary on smackdown and he’s all leaning back against his seat and he’s like “whaddup guys” all casual and just 😭😭💖💖💖👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼🔥🔥🔥🙌🏼🙌🏼💦💦 in the blue tank top and just aihdsjidsk YEAH THATS WHAT I RECOMMEND

Money In The Bank Thoughts
Money In The Bank Thoughts:
Pros: - Alexa Bliss winning the Women's Money In The Bank ladder match and successfully cashing in on Nia Jax - Ronda's singles debut performance - AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship (Undoubtedly their best match under the WWE banner) - The Chicago audience (Passionate and loud) - The return of James Ellsworth - Seth Rollins vs. Elias for the Intercontinental Championship - Braun Strowman winning the Men's Money In The Bank ladder match. (I would have preferred Samoa Joe)
Cons: - Roman Reigns vs Jinder Mahal - Jonathan Coachman's horrendous commentary - The finish to Bobby Lashley vs. Sami Zayn fell completely flat - While the pacing was improved from recent events, it still felt far too long
Overall, I would give it a 7.5/10

NXT to the Main Roster #3 - Carmella My name’s Carmella, and I am the Princess of Staten Island and the Fabulous diva in N.X.T.
Coming in as a valet of Enzo Amore and Colin Cassidy, Carmella was not welcome with open arms. Seemingly resembling that if the Divas division, people were unapologetically booing Carmella from the building (even though NXT is developmental, but…).
But with Enzo and Cass’ popularity, Carmella started to gain some. She would accompany them to the ring until their move to the Main Roster in early 2016.
Carmella would stay in NXT following her boys and actually receive an opportunity for the NXT Women’s Championship, which was unsuccessful, but still a great milestone. Plus, it was a good match against an on-fire Bayley, it’s recommended.
She qas finally given her big break in the WWE Draft in 2016, where she would land on Smackdown Live. She would be a face, until Nikki Bella returned. This was her first major storyline and she did a pretty good job. The mic work from Carmella in this feud was great and really showed her ability to hit where it hurts. She was also the last woman eliminated in the inaugural Smackdown Women’s Championship challenge at Backlash that year, less than 2 months after debuting.
Her biggest break at the point would be her winning the first Money in the Bank ladder match with all female competitors, with a little help from James Ellsworth. She would hold on to the briefcase until the Smackdown after Wrestlemania 34, where she first beat Charlotte Flair.
Not a bad prize for someone first starting as a valet.
Ratings: NXT: ***½ Main Roster: ****
