I’m so confident about these class pairings.

Alright here’s my go at it I’m really happy with how these fit together. Im going to keep this as short as possible but I want to be convincing so I might ramble a bit. First off the classics

Active Thief and passive rogue. Steal

Active prince and passive bard. Destroy

Active mage and passive seer. Know

Active knight and passive page. Apply.

First sticking point. I put knights as active and pages as passive because..

Active classes are focused and direct. They are narrow fully realized have full control over their abilities. This is true for every cannon active class. Princes and thieves especially are driven and in control of their powers. They aren’t asking or allowing x, they are telling and directing, and this is complimented by the other active trait of doing things for oneself, and therefore not needing to worry about the needs of others when factoring how one uses their abilities. Passive classes are less controlled but more potent. Bards barely do anything on purpose, but they erode they erode things just as well as princes. Rogues have to worry about the needs of their compatriots, but that allows them to equip everyone around them as opposed to just themself. Actives are snipers, passives are grenades.

Knights are direct. They know their job and they do it. It benefits others but so do other active classes. Their job is to apply their aspect where it is lacking, and protect it in times of scarcity.

Pages are all over the place. They have much less control both in how they access their powers, which needs a journey of self discovery, and how they utilize their powers, which as we saw with Jake can be all over the place, but extremely potent. These two are textbook passive and active pair. They apply their aspect as a blanket so everyone can get it as needed.

Active Witch and Passive Sylph. Manipulate.

Alright so here we go.

So there’s the obvious quotes of Kanaya telling Jade that Sylphs are more magical witches. That points in the right direction but there’s abstract connections as well.

Sylphs don’t really create and they don’t exclusively heal. They manipulate for the benefit their team members. Witches are active. They have a relationship with their aspect that is all about bending the rules, going around what’s natural. Sylphs are the same way. Aranea healing Terezi’s blindness can be seen as manipulating light outside of what it was supposed to be. Kanaya’s most prominent reputation is as ‘’meddlesome’ and yet she’s not a witch, she’s a Sylph.

Lastly, prince and bard goes together because they’re royal court members. Thieves and rogues are bandits. Mages and seers are magical academics.

Witches and sylphs are both magical denizens of a forest, known for being both good or bad, but dealing with trickery and existing outside of societal rules.

If you were creating a class system for your comic, why would you make 4 class pairings with connected names, and two whose names connect to each other and not their respective pairs.

Active Maid and Passive Heir. Serve

Again, the names are match well here. Maids and heirs are both at the bottom of a power dynamic but still have some status.

Heirs and maids have by far the strongest connection to their aspect. Whenever I see classpecting in the wild I always see people disprove maids as creator classes who happen to have tendency to serve stuff, and heirs as manipulator classes who happen to have a tendency to become their aspect metaphorically or otherwise. There’s no connection between those proposed class roles and those tendencies.

But maids aren’t a creator class. The maids we see don’t create, but further the goals of their aspects, with Aradia preserving the alpha timeline and Jane protecting the life within her team.

Heirs aren’t a manipulator class. Seriously we said that heirs “allow their aspect to be manipulated?” Manipulation takes force, and heirs are the most ‘go with the flow of their aspect’ class there is. They don’t manipulate, they work with and eventually become.

Maids are active because they are more direct and more forceful, and they often rebel against that which they’re serving. They have more control, less power. Heirs are passive as they have more connection to their aspect, and therefore more power, but as a consequence have less control as they have to work with their aspect to gain anything from it.

Round 3 for the worst ship poll seemed relatively normal to me, I think the one surprise is that as of now, Gamzee x Jane is beating put Vriska x Meenah, and I think it’s because of the epilogues.

I understand in canon the interaction between Jane and Gamzee was more superficial, he sold potions to her, threw corpses into her kerbelsprite and exploded it, and then fucked off to stalk the alpha kids from a distance.

In the epilogues, Jane marries Jake, meets Gamzee at Dirk’s funeral, her hatred of trolls gets her hooked into a caliginous relationship with Gamzee, lots of honking and milk involved behind closed doors.

I can at least think that GamJane cpuld work in a fanfiction that isn’t the epilogues, because they are at least within a reasonable age of each other. (However Gamzee is the first troll to make it to the alpha sessions because of shenanigans, so I think he’s still 13 while Jane is 16, weird)

In order for Meenah x Vriska to be normal, I would have to radically stretch canon so that the troll session lasts 6 years, or whatever the case where Vriska survives Sgrub, lives for 6 years at minimum, and then dies. In canon MeenVris is pedophilia, in canon GamJane wasn’t really a thing, but at least one of them wasn’t an adult. It has to be the epilogues that made GamJane even a ship people considered.

Or at least have even Gamzee be in a better state of mind or Jane being one to help him. Which would make the metaphor of his attraction to her like a drug (because of her name) turning out to be a healthy kind, breaking free from LE's influence and rekindling with his old friends like Karkat. It's sad though people had praised and loved MeenVris just for only pretty lesbians. Even if there was an age gap, the fact they are two beautiful girls trumps out pedophilia allegations. It says a lot about how much women get away with absolutely anything. Rape, abuse, pedophilia, murder, etc. Even those under trans-woman can get a pass. If not just pretty lesbians, they are the only two current relevant badass action girls in Homestuck. Kanaya does nothing but sit around with Rose. Terezi is only known for judgement, not action. Aradia doesn't want to involve herself in anything. Feferi is useless as Meenah replaced her. And people want to only make dead Nepeta jokes, not have her be an apex predator. And Dancestors speak for itself that only Aranea is relevant and everyone else besides her and Meenah are pointless as fuck.

my take on a page of doom under the cut!

y'know, it's really funny you included these in the same ask- one of my first requests was someone asking for page of doom pomni!

in my personal interpretation, a page isn't someone who "starts weak and grows strong"; i feel like a slightly more nuanced definition would be along the lines of, a character who starts undirected and full of potential, and later gains control over and direction with their powers. this can be seen with jake- his hope powers before the session begins/before the Fuckening happens are definitely present, he just doesn't quite know how to use them with intention yet. he accidentally manifests brain ghost dirk, and he manipulates his desired outcomes into being, through his conversation with jane and dirk. it isn't until after trickster mode happens that he begins to gain an understanding of intentional use of his hope, and aranea healing his emotional problems (caused by understanding the damage he caused) allows him to begin using his powers with intention.

doom is the aspect of inevitability, of the destined-to-be. obviously death is doom's largest domain, but doom also covers other swaths of territory; doomed sessions are the majority of sessions SBURB produces, regardless of whether they are null, void, or dead. doomed timelines are also very common; someone fucked up and deviated from the path, so there is no other way forward but backwards. a doom player mindful of these facts will manipulate the definition of doom; if x, y, and z must happen, we can use them to produce a, b, and c, benefiting our session in exchange.

a page of doom would likely not be fully aware of their abilities from square one. without knowledge of doom or how to use it, they would remain completely in the dark about their fate. they may subconsciously use doom to get what they want, unintentionally invoking the power of inevitability to convince others to do what they want because "it'll happen regardless". as the page awakens, they might begin seeing the rules and laws outlining their life; seeing these rules would allow the page to find ways to bend them. a page of doom may work closely with their session's time player to avoid botching their session as well as unnecessary casualties. a fully awakened page of doom would have a mastery over death; able to harness doom, condemning their enemies to brutal or terrible fates. a page of doom may also be required to make a sacrifice for their team, ultimately winning the game and preventing the timeline from slipping into doom.
