💊 -- ; top 5 song associations, share the top songs in your playlist that most inspire / represent your muses the most. bonus points if you include lyrics to go along with it.
TAGGED BY : stolen from @penniesfortheferryman !
TAGGING : @shinestxr , @badmusejail ( gaster ) , and anyone else can steal this from me !
1 ) INTERROBANG - BAYSIDE .
Tumblr media
if confidence is in the chest i'd never take a single breath; i keep my secrets up my sleeve and cut my arms off just to sleep. // oh happy days are here again, but i've spent them all in bed. // i am on a mission to lose this sorry disposition and i know there's truth in lies but i'm so tired of nursing mine. i've always had more pride than sense; a little expletiving prince. a winter of my discontent begins, oh how i've longed for this.
2 ) BURY ME - BAYSIDE .
Tumblr media
don't lean on me cause these bones are weak -- they're held up by friction and force and i'm not sure it's in me to be so mean. // can people change in any meaningful way? we cover up, we renovate; can you really fool the world with a fresh coat of paint? // you can't believe what you hear and see. history is calling me but i was up all night, and i just wanna sleep. // guilty by association i gotta work real hard to change some minds. i want your respect but not your praise; don't think of me on your dying day.
3 ) BLAME IT ON BAD LUCK - BAYSIDE .
Tumblr media
assume it's just not worth getting back up. so i'll blame it on bad luck, and i'll shake responsibility. // do you ever wake up to realize that your life is meaningless? does it give you strength or lead you to your grave at a young age? // it seems that when i ran away from my past all my faith, my dignity, my pride got left back. and now i think it's time that i realize that self pity's meaningless, though i'm ten feet deep, i'll claw my way back out from my own grave!! // now i realize i'd give anything i had to spend a day in my old shoes.
4 ) YOU REMIND ME OF HOME - BENJAMIN GIBBARD .
Tumblr media
you remind me of home: a broken bed with dirty sheets that creaks when i am shifting in my sleep. // you remind me of home: in a suburban town with nothing to do, patiently waiting for something to happen. but the foundation is crumbling and becoming one with the ground. while you lay there in slumber, you're wasting your life. wasting your life.
5 ) LIGHTNING BOLT - JAKE BUGG .
Tumblr media
met her, as the angels parted for her, but she only brought me torture. but that's what happens when it's you who's standing in the path of a lightning bolt. // chances, people tell you not to take chances when they tell you there aren't any answers. and i was starting to agree but i awoke suddenly in the path of a lightning bolt. // it was silent -- i was lying back gazing skyward, when the moment got shattered; i remembered what she said. and then she fled in a path of a lightning bolt.

Fuck it. This is gonna be RGB Poly specific to my fic series, MORE FOCUSING ON THE WAY THE SONG SOUNDS instead of the lyrics... though some of the lyrics do fit. I think the way the instruments talk is more important. And I am gonna apologize in advance because some of these might be spoilers future vibes I plan to write... oopsie
I WILL BE SURPRISED IF ANYONE KNOWS ANY OF THESE MY MUSIC TASTE IS SO STRANGE well I mean EDEN is pretty out there but I kind of hunt for niche on purpose
Simple Pleasures - Jake Bugg
Horns - Bryce Fox
for when i tear my heart out of my chest - Omri
midas touch - One Hope & TRAILS
...Baby One More Time - CRYPTO
the bottle to your lightning - Omri
Modern Warfare - EDEN
Crazy in Love - EDEN
impress you - updog
tropicana - updog

Play Me Like A Violin - Stephen
LOVE YOU (AGAIN) - Moreover & Vurb
Otherworldly - Like Saturn
Some of these might not even be accurate at this point sometimes I just get excited about sharing a song I really like SOB...
Shoutout Dead To Me current super brainrot song in my head I love the way this shit talks to me
If I am not. Careful. I will make a list of songs that I think hit home to RGB poly. And that is a dangerous thing to let me do.

和訳【Jake Bugg/ Saviours of the City】今を切り取る男 The Man who Cuts the Present World LyraのBlogへ #jake Bugg #savioursofthecity #ジェイクバグ #coronavirus #covid19 #presentworld #world #コロナウィルス #noelgallagher #stoneroses

favorite songs. (a dramatic text lol)
Okay maybe this is one of the things I have the most difficulty writing because these songs are part of my life in a way that I can't explain, explaining the beginning, yes I'm going to talk about my favorite songs of all time.
Between The Bars by Elliott Smith
Starting with 'between the bars' by elliott smith, i met this song in mid-2013, in a movie called 'stuck in love', this movie is in my top 4 favorite movies of all time, anyway, since i heard this music for the first time, and i saw this music scene in the movie, it was like an explosion of feelings, i was so sad and at the same time glad i found a song like that, after that i started looking for more about elliott and falling in love more every day for his songs.

Romance by ex:Re
The next song is called 'Romance' by ex:Re, a band that is made up of the lead singer of 'Daughter', a band I love very much and I love Elena Tonra and everything she has done musically in any project she gets involved in. Anyway, this song was introduced to me by a friend, and from the first time I heard it I went completely insane, it's like I once commented in the comments tab of the youtube video "this song makes me want to dance, cry, scream, jump and spin non-stop, I see this video every time". This is one of the videos I love the most, if not the one I love the most, I love how she dances, how she expresses her feelings through her movements, how intense and heavy these lyrics are, you know? I don't know how she manages to do all this and anyway. I don't know, maybe this one is the hardest to say how I feel, because it really is a mix of sensations, I just presented this song to a friend, because this video, the elena, this is a lot like her, and she loves this song. these days, once, we were having a horrible drink, in my room, and me and Julia, who is my friend, decided it was time to listen to 'romance' together, and when it started we started screaming the lyrics of the song and spinning around and in the end hugging each other as we watched the rest of the video.

How To Save A Life by The Fray
The next song is called 'how to save a life' by a band called The Fray, this is the one that has a very random meaning but that has marked my life a lot. It all starts when I started being a fan of 'one direction' in 2011, then with time I became addicted to reading fanfics, like everyone in a fandom, so one day I found a fanfic called 'how to save a life', look at the same name as the song, and at the beginning of the fanfic it was asked to play this song while reading some chapters, and I started to love this song with all my life, I already knew The Fray, also because of one direction lol, seeing as louis performed one of their songs but i had never stopped to listen to 'how to save a life', i had only listened to 'you found me' and 'look after you' and i love them both a lot too.

“I got out, I got out, I’m alive and I’m here to stay”
In which Peeta works in the mines in District 12.
Song Lyrics for prompt by Jake Bugg
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Katniss?”
The soft call of her sister’s voice echoed through the small living area of her flat. Katniss turned from her position at the kitchen sink to see her stood hesitantly in the doorway.
“You can come in, Prim, I don’t bite.”
She set the plate she had been wiping down and travelled into the living area to greet her sister. The whole flat was tiny, with a couch that was way too large for the space, almost as if it didn’t quite belong there. She supposed it didn’t really as it was a dying gift from her witch of a mother-in-law: trust the woman to stick them with the most horrendous piece of furniture she had ever seen. The fabric was worn and a dark ochre with violet swirls on the seat cushions. In an ideal scenario neither her nor her husband would have kept it, but they simply could not afford anything else.
Her husband, Peeta, had been the obvious choice to take over the Mellark Family bakery, however being third in line meant that control had passed to his eldest brother. Instead, they were living off of the wage of a coalminer. Katniss herself would hunt and trade, but Peeta had decided that him working in the mines was the only viable option they had. She hated it; Peeta was working six days a week so her time with him was limited, but it reminded her so much of the situation her mother and father had been in some twenty years earlier. Her father was a kind and gentle man with a fighting spirt, qualities very much apparent in her husband also. But the mines had smothered his ferocity until they eventually smothered him too.
“Katniss…”
“You wanna sit down? I’ve got some cookies left over from the bakery this morning, Peeta’s brother brought them by.”
“Katniss…”
“I’ve got tea if you’d like?” she continued. Ever since their father had died, Katniss was concerned that her sister wasn’t eating enough. Most often she never was, but within the last few years her apothecary in the merchant part of town was flourishing and Prim could finally afford to feed herself. Katniss still worried though and she believed that she always would.
“Katniss you need to listen to me.”
Prim was never blunt, and her tone took Katniss by surprise. It was with this that she looked at her sister properly for the first time since her arrival. Her eyes were glossy but steely and her cheeks were flushed like she’d been running.
“I don’t quite know how I can tell you this.”
“What is it? Is it Peeta?”
Prim didn’t answer.
“Prim! What’s happened? Where’s Peeta? Is he okay?”
She still didn’t answer.
“Prim, please tell me!” She was desperate now, clinging to her sister as if her life depended on it. She released a shaky, choked sob as she clutched at the collar of her little sister’s dress.
“Something has happened at the mines. They think it was an explosion.”
And with two simple sentences her life crumbled in her hands, slipping away from her as she grasped with her fingertips, desperately trying to hold on.
Without another word to her sister she moved towards the front door, but her legs felt like lead and bile rose up her throat. A warm hand grasped hers and gently helped her out of the apartment.
The Town Square, which was usually a bustling hive of trade, was desolate. The walk through the town was blurry and fuzzy, and her eyes could not focus on anything. The first thing Katniss could see was a cluster of people on the edge of the Seam area of town, clearly gathering around the atrocity.
“She’s here! She’s here! Move out of the way!”
The man bellowing was quickly in front of her and she recognised the dark hair and grey eyes so similar to her own.
“Gale? What’s happened? Where’s Peeta?” She asked frantically.
There had been a landslide within the mine, Gale had explained. Peeta was in a tunnel when it happened and managed to dive out of the way just in time.
“He’s alive! Where is he?”
“Katniss, he’s still in the tunnel. His leg got caught under the rubble. We have a rescue team in right now, but they’re frightened that if they move any rubble the whole mountainside might collapse.”
“I don’t care! Get him out! NOW!” she screamed hoarsely, and she felt Prim tighten her grip on her. The touch grounded her, and she collapsed to the floor in broken sobs. Piles of arid dirt were fisted in her hands as she punched the earth beneath her.
She must have blacked out from the screaming at some point. When her eyes next opened it was dark and she was numb from the cold.
“Hey, Katniss…” Gale crouched in front of her, ran a hand down her braid and the gently cupped her cheek. “He’s out, they’re just checking him over.”
He helped her up, aware that she was now much more alert to her surroundings.
“He’s just over here, come on, I’ll take you.” Katniss felt him tug gently on her frozen hands as he coerced her into his direction. She followed Gale willingly, her limbs stiff and heavy.
“Peeta!”
She saw him laid on the ground, sickly pale and covered in black ash. She knelt down by his side hesitantly, as if his skin were a delicate porcelain china doll. His blue eyes fluttered open as she ran a timid hand through his blond curls.
“Never known you to be gentle, sweetheart.” His mouth turned upwards into a sly grin and she had to refrain from playfully smacking him.
“Peeta, it’s not funny, you could have died!”
“I know, I know.” Her hand was stroking his hair gently and the other one was held over his heart, as if she was checking he was still alive. He tugged lightly on her arm, willing her to come closer to him. “Prim says my leg will never be good enough to work in the mines again.”
“Good.” She replied bluntly, before realising how disastrous her words had sounded. “Well I don’t mean good about your leg obviously!” Katniss huffed in annoyance at Peeta, who seemed to find it highly amusing.
“I love you, so much, you know? All I could think about was getting back to you… and your elegant way with words.” Peeta was beaming now, grinning like a schoolboy at her annoyance at him.
“I love you too. I couldn’t lose you.” She replied, choosing to ignore his jokes.
“You didn’t lose me. I got out, I’m alive, and I’m here to stay. I will be annoying you with ill-timed humour for as long as I can.”
“Good.”
And for the first time that day, she actually felt good.

There's a new Jake Bugg song which means it's time for me to make the lyrics about destiel again. And honestly I dont even have to try with this one, it's so post-purgatory Dean. Time to make another gifset that’s for just for an audience of me.
I'm losing control it's hell in my soul And I'm only tough when I'm drinking my way to heaven. Suddenly I see you everywhere You're always in my head Never been so lost

HOME, AGAIN: a vang0chainz/burgerbang0 playlist ( listen )
tracklist + explanations under the cut !
i. i dreamt we spoke again - death cab for cutie: this one is mostly taken upon the idea that the two knew each other before vang0 lost his memory; as is a lot of the narrative of the playlist. essentially, burger missing vang0 before he finds him again. however, could also represent the general feeling of knowing someone you click well with even if you’ve never met them before. either a realistic or metaphorical sense of deja vu and angst. ii. 22 (over soon) - bon iver: yet, again on the principle that burger knew vang0 before, this track represents the divide that he has to cope with once he finds hims. not on that principle, it’s essentially the divide that exists between two very jaded people living in night city who are beginning to develop a sense of caring for the other but cannot discern what is real and what is for survival; although it is real for the both of them. it’s definitely on the principle that in night city, all life is short, and as the title and lyrics suggest: this could all be over soon. for burger that means cherish it. for vang0 that means don’t get attached. iii. liability - lorde: first real vang0 perspective track on the mix, in which he struggles with what intense insecurity exists behind his missing memories. iv. simple pleasures - jake bugg: yet again a point for vang0 trying to cope with being a person in night city coupled with those missing memories, attempting to decipher why someone like burgerchainz could genuinely want him around and questioning everything from burger’s kindness to his own personal fear of accepting himself and allowing himself to have nice things. v. futile devices - sufjan stevens: i’d like to call this one “entering the mutual pining zone”; while burger has been feeling for vang0 since the beginning, this is the song where vang0 is finally going to allow himself to have something nice and accepts that he has feelings for burger--except, not. why would he do that? what if he ruins it? what happened to not getting attached? he’s just going to sleep on burger’s couch and try not to let him catch him staring. everything’s fine. it’s fine. vi. stranger - amber run: this song is the catalyst. they both kind of know, but they’re still too afraid to move. maybe one of them nearly died, and it hit them at the same time once again how short and simple and meaningless life can be in night city--that if you’re going to life fast, maybe that should apply to love too. whatever event happened to clue them in that this is very real between them, it happens to this track.  vii. clouds - borns: some of the lyrics throughout really reminded me of my burgerchainz concept post in which his memory is shit but in an endearing way, but this is definitely a burger track. in fact, it’s the burger track. the one where he decides he’s gonna bite the bullet and say something in very burger fashion about this whole love thing that’s been realized in track seven. viii. heartlines - florence and the machine: burger says what’s on his mind, and this time vang0′s inhibitions are met with the wholly invigorating concept that no matter what came before his memories, he is in control now. this is his life, and he is entirely allowed to make the choice to kiss his hunky metal-jawed boyfriend. x. good at loving you - mother mother: through the course of this ordeal, it was a damn good idea to exit the mutual pining zone. xi. sunlight - hozier: it’s hozier. it’s sweet. everything’s okay. that’s it. that’s the whole explanation. thanks for listening, bud.

Time for playlist spam! Here’s a playlist I built for Zuvi. Track list with pertinent lyrics and some explanations under the cut. The formatting will almost certainly get broken on mobile, so apologies in advance.
Two Points for Honesty - Guster [just a little about Zuvi in general; she grew up kind of thinking that she was a waste and not good enough and that nobody did/would care about her]
If that's all that you will be Then you'll be a waste of time You've dreamed a thousand dreams None seem to stick in your mind Two points for honesty It must make you sad to know that Nobody cares at all
Sweet Disposition - The Temper Trap [how Zuvi falls in love, a little bit recklessly, but deeply, wholly, with more care than it looks like from the outside]
Sweet disposition Never too soon Oh, reckless abandon Like no one's watching you
Mess is Mine - Vance Joy [falling in love, kind of in general, but specifically with Risha]
You know you gave me all the time Oh, did I give enough of mine? Hold on, darling This body is yours, This body is yours and mine Well hold on, my darling This mess was yours, Now your mess is mine
Bloodstream - Stateless [Zuvi & Lana; they really did not mean to get involved with each other, and it ends up not really being a good thing for either of them and they kind of know it, but sometimes it’s hard to say no to something that feels good, you know?]
And the silence surrounds you And hunts you I think I might've inhaled you I could feel you behind my eyes You’ve gotten into my bloodstream I could feel you floating in me
The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most - Dashboard Confessional [Zuvi hates Odessen, she doesn’t want to lead the Alliance, her crew and her lovers aren’t here, and Lana’s been withholding information from her but she knows why; my inner emo teenager is showing and I don’t give a shit]
And you can't fake it hard enough to please everyone Or anyone at all...or anyone at all And the grave that you refuse to leave The refuge that you've built to flee, The places that you've come to fear the most
Trembling Hands - The Temper Trap [getting the news that they might have found her old crew--maybe it will help her to have them back, or maybe it’s too late for them all]
So throw me a line Somebody out there help me I'm on my own Throw me a line Afraid that I have come here To win you again With trembling hands Hear me now make me whole
I Won’t Fight It - Andrew Belle [reuniting with Corso and Risha, scared that it won’t be the same (scared that it will be the same)]
Where your body is I'll be brave I walk to it If there's a crowd waiting for me there I'll break through it, but I won't fight it, I won't fight it
You’re Somebody Else - flora cash [Akaavi and Corso to Zuvi, probably starting around the time she kills Senya, potentially Akaavi to Zuvi even earlier, because Akaavi is a lot more perceptive than Corso]
Well you look like yourself But you're somebody else Only it ain't on the surface Well you talk like yourself No, I hear someone else though Now you're making me nervous
Simple Pleasures - Jake Bugg [Zuvi & Theron; a warning]
And maybe it's all that you've done wrong So just bite your silver tongue That you lied with, lied to yourself
It’s Too Much - Moose Blood [fuck. This is how Akaavi leaves Zuvi]
And I don't think I've got this in me And I don't feel the way you do It's been a while now and it kills me to say that It's just too much
Tell Me Why - Nine Pound Shadow [double fuck. Corso & Zuvi breaking up]
And after all this hurt I still love you so And you don't know what this is like There must have been something that you could say Everyone who tried to love you You pushed them all away
Fade Into You - Mazzy Star [Risha about Zuvi; and Risha still loves her no matter what]
I think it’s strange you never knew
[yeah, because you don’t just come out and say it, asshole]
Hanging On - Active Child [fuck, the third. This is Zuvi and Lana’s break up; Lana has always wanted something different than what Zuvi can give her, and I’m terrible for doing this to them, but I’m a slut for angst and suffering]
Touch me and then turn away Put your hands into the flame Tell me if you feel this pain 'cause I don't want to be your ball and chain
Your Ex-Lover is Dead - Stars [Zuvi is having some bad days, yo; but she brought this upon herself and she needs to learn to face actual consequences]
Live through this, and you won't look back There's one thing I want to say, so I'll be brave You were what I wanted I gave what I gave I'm not sorry I met you I'm not sorry it's over I'm not sorry there's nothing to save
Better Life - Paper Route [Accepting, moving on]
All this fire in my veins From a heart that's trapped in my ribcage Burning through my fingertips Burning everything I kiss | And what is done is done Piece together what's been broken Can you ever give up someone A better life, a better life is waiting
Our Hearts Are Wrong - Jessica Lea Mayfield [Zuvi & @rainofaugustsith ‘s Ror; Meeting Ror? First mission with Ror? Realizing she’s falling for Ror? Deciding darkness is worth it as long as she has Risha and Ror?]
You're intimidating as all hell But I ain't scared of you I know how you work I am just like you No matter what you say Our hearts are wrong
The Night Starts Here - Stars [Post Onslaught fuckery, but I’m not saying much more]
The night starts here, the night starts here Forget your name, forget your fear You drop a coin into the sea And shout out please come back to me You name your child after your fear And tell them I have brought you here

31 & 32?
31. Rank the vocal line in terms of favorite singing style!
I know nothing about singing "style" so I'll go with their voices! Which I really don't know because I think they're all so different, like:
Taehyung - deep, soothing voice that can also reach high notes so... hell yes?? We love a versatile king??? I dig it so much, fam.
Jimin - his voice has a very particular/unique... pitch? Tone? Idk how to explain it, but I'm sure you know what I mean. His voice is really something else, when you hear it, you know it's Jimin.
Jeongguk - his voice goes well with every type of song and I believe he is the one who portrays better the emotions of each one of them.
Seokjin - to my ears his singing voice is very nasal and I LOVE IT!!!! I love, love, love that kind of voices. I used to be so obsessed with Jake Bugg just because of that.
32. Rank the rap line in terms of favorite rap style!
Ugh, same that with vocal line. It used to be Yoongi hands down for me before but idk anymore because:
Yoongi - his rapping voice is what gets me, how fast he does it (his tongue technology, aye), and those "hhhh" sounds he makes or when his voice gets lower with that mocking/silly tone, you know what I mean?
Hoseok - Three words: Hope Fucking World. Ugh, that mixtape is my emotional support album. I love the style of his songs and his adlibs, it just makes me really really happy. His sound effects and his change of voices, I... I love it.
Namjoon - dude, his LYRICS. This man is so damn smart and he shows it with every single song he writes. Like that thing he did with Trivia: Love with the play on the Korean characters, I was so shook. He never ceases to amaze me.

Briston Maroney - “Under My Skin”
SXSW 2019 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 3
Pairs Well With…Jake Bugg, Jason Isbell, Declan McKenna
Born out of Nashville, Briston Maroney’s sound draws distinctly from across the pond, inspired by UK artists past and present with a gritty, blues rock base. There is a good musicologist question of who’s influencing who when tracing back blues and folk rock to their first notes, a history that plays really naturally in Maroney’s songwriting. Armed with an incredibly rich voice, naturally textured while real and raw, Maroney fits his songs well, ramblers and lyrical ballads alike. Tying Americana roots music, alt country crunch, and grimy rock and roll, the tracks on his debut EP Big Shot and recent follow-up Carnival excel in both personality and tight, performative instrumentation. These songs will connect with classic rock heads, mainstream pop, indie listeners - wide accessibility that could mean a catapult year for Briston Maroney through SXSW 2019. He already has three official showcases on his gig-book in Austin next month, most notably alongside OEB recommendations Bane’s World, Bad Bad Hats, and Illiterate Light at Palm Door on Sixth Wednesday night.

Sebestyen - Cabin in the Clouds
Sebestyen is a talented artist whose music could be characterized as a unique combination between lo-fi and indie rock. Recently, he dropped a new EP release titled Cabin in the Clouds. This project is a great showcase of his skills, as it really excels on multiple fronts. The first thing that you might notice is certainly the artist’s remarkable capability to endow his work with personality and energy, and the sound of the track has a very organic, atmospheric vibe. The songwriting on the EP feels personal and relatable, and it is refreshingly far removed from the usual cliches of the genre, borrowing from other influences, ranging from the 60s to the 70s and the psychedelic music scene. The sound of the instrumentals is also really great, with beats that are very sonically balanced, offering a unique portrait between next-level power and groundbreaking detail. The first song, Jumpin’ Jack, makes me think of artists like Elliott Smith. I love the simple, nocturnal atmosphere of these sounds! One of the highlights is the song Pretty Please, which sets the bar higher in terms of personable lyrics and genuine songwriting.
Having said that, each song has something special to offer, and I really like what each piece of music brings to the table. This EP release is actually a great example of what it means to create indie music that feels direct and personal, going for a spontaneous, yet relatable feel. Don’t pass up on this one if you are a fan of artists like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Father John Misty or Jake Bugg, because this release will definitely resonate with you.

A conversation with Declan McKenna | HumanHuman
We’ve been on the tail of young and undeniably talented songwriter Declan Mckenna for over a year now since the release of his incredibly popular debut single “Brazil”. Over the past few months, he’s developed a reputation of one of the music industry brightest talents and a knack for tackling life’s tough subjects. From anti-FIFA feelings in “Brazil” to highlighting the hardships of young transgender people in “Paracetamol” to damning religion’s grip on war in newest release “Bethlehem”, his interest in the world’s flaw are evident.
The seventeen-year-old Brit was labelled as a Promising Artist a year ago following Crack in the Road’s spot-on discovery and a slew of agrees from some of our most influential users. The support for this emerging musician is clear, and so we wanted to ask Mckenna a few questions about what this rise to the realm of known music has been like.
I remember when I first heard your music, which was the song “Brazil”, and I thought “this is the best football-related song I’ve ever heard!”
[Starts laughing] thank you!
What sparked the need to write it?
It was a bit of a weird one. I generally come up with the melodies and guitar riffs before I come up with any lyrics, so first I had this guitar riff that I really liked and then I came up with the melody but didn’t have any words for it. Then it kind of just happened! I started hearing things about the FIFA World Cup and the corruption around it. I don’t really know why or how it happened, but I ended up writing a song about it and it turned out to be the one that I recorded and released. I was just seeing all this stuff around and like most songs, I was hearing so much about it that I couldn’t really avoid writing about it.
Well you say like most songs, but it’s a pretty unique subject!
I guess so… I mean the weird thing is that when I wrote it, I didn’t expect anyone to hear it! I just wrote what I wanted to. It was just me being like “hey, this isn’t right” and then writing a song about it.
I’ve seen that the YouTube video for “Brazil” has over a million views. Did you expect the song to be so successful?
Not at all. It’s crazy and I did not expect that to come from one song I recorded in summer at a university. I made the video for it with a couple of friends in Brixton, just because we wanted to and now you’ve seen the views - it’s like, what the hell! It’s amazing and I couldn’t expect that kind of reaction to anything I’ve made. Now, I get to go to loads of places and play shows, which is great!
We kind of have to mention the Sky News interview, which is pretty cool in itself, but one thing that stuck out to me was that you said “I want to be a musician”, rather than “I am a musician.” Does that mean it still feels like it isn’t official yet?
Well, that interview was quite a while ago. Of course, a musician is a person who plays music, but for me, it’s about being a musician in a career sense. Right now, I’m just the kind of musician who plays some instruments [laughs] I don’t see it as a career yet… I mean, it sort of is, but it’s still such early days. I feel like it hasn’t really hit me yet.
Obviously you’re seventeen now, but when your music first came out you were sixteen -
Fifteen!
Wow, fifteen? Okay! Well, do you think age affects the way that people perceive your music?
It can be quite patronizing a lot of the time, just the way that people assume things. It’s normally by accident and it’s not like people are being rude or anything, but it can be quite frustrating when everything is put down to your age. People might say, “oh, that must be because of his hormones.” [laughs] It’s weird how frequent I get stuff like that. I’m like, “really?! Do you not remember being a teenager?” That’s the thing, like yeah, I am a teenager, but my entire life doesn’t revolve around that fact. Being a teenager is something that I am, but that’s it! [laughing] It’s not really that deep.
Looking back again, last year you won Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent competition. How significant has that been to your career so far?
I feel like the initial audition process for that did a lot more for me. Obviously, the competition was great, and I got a write-up in NME, which I had never had before, but in the auditions the dude who was handling the letter D entries passed on my name to a load of people and I feel like that was one of the earliest things that started pushing my music, as opposed to the actual competition and the outcome, which was more public. Although, both of those things have done crazy stuff for me! I’m pretty glad I did that. It’s weird because a lot of musicians shy away from competitions, and so do I, but I feel like that one was cool because the prize was literally a Glastonbury slot! It was a great decision because a lot of this stuff wouldn't have happened for me otherwise.
You mentioned the NME review there that described the Glastonbury show as a great performance, so have you been playing live shows for a long time?
Well then I’d been playing on my own for a couple of years just with a loop pedal, but now it’s all changed. I’ve got a band, mostly as a four-piece, but for the last few shows it’s been as a five-piece. It’s been cool playing with a band, I much prefer that. I’m all about the live shows and we’ve been playing quite a lot.
Would you say that playing live is your favourite part of being a musician?
Yeah, definitely! It’s a lot less stressful playing as a group. I find that performances are the most fun part. Everything else feels like build up to shows for me.
A lot of people do talk about how the music industry relies on live shows now.
Oh yeah, because of streaming and people aren’t buying records as much. We need to have people at shows or buying merch in order to be actually making money from the industry.
Or be Adele, then you’re alright.
[Laughs] yeah, or that!
I was listening to your music and I think my favourite song of yours is “Brew”, simply because it shows a more experimental side to your music and those guitars in the first half reminded me of The xx. I was wondering, are you often compared to other musicians?
Yeah, I get Jake Bugg a lot, which I don’t really understand. It’s like people think seventeen-year-old from the UK who plays guitar - Jake Bugg! Or Jamie T, which I also don’t get, because he like half raps and I’m not even close to that. That was one of the things about releasing my second single, to be completely different from the first one, because I just hated being compared to these other artists. Then people were like Vampire Weekend! It’s an odd one being compared because sometimes you get really good ones too. I once got Jeff Buckley, that’s such a compliment! My entire life and career is based around Jeff Buckley.
“My entire life and career is based around Jeff Buckley.”— Declan Mckenna
That actually brings me on to my next question, because I was going to ask you which artists have been most prominent for you?
Jeff Buckley is everyone’s musician, but also more importantly he’s a musician’s musician. All musicians are inspired by Jeff Buckley, and it’s the same with David Bowie who is probably one of my biggest influences in music. The Beatles too, who I love. I guess these days some more modern bands are St Vincent, TV On The Radio, Sufjan Stevens.
Oh I love him, especially Carrie & Lowell.
That’s an amazing an album! My favourite album of his is The Age of Adz, which is this really crazy industrial one.
There were the State ones too.
Yeah, he did Illinois and Michigan.
I prefer Illinois.
Yeah, Illinois is better. It has that song “Chicago” on it, that’s such a great song. I feel like that song inspired so much music after that. Bands like Elbow and even Coldplay were massively influenced by that one song.
And yet not enough people know about Sufjan!
Yeah, again it’s like he’s a musician’s musician or people who are really into music are really into Sufjan Stevens. Outside of that I don’t even know that many people who like his music. He headlined End of the Road last year which was pretty cool, which is wish I could have seen.
To go back to your music and to the track “Paracetamol”. It’s an incredibly catchy song, but with a really serious message, so why were you drawn to this struggle of young transgender people?
It was this story that was really prominent on social media, which as a teenager is something that’s quite prominent in my life. It never really got any mainstream media coverage and I was just like, why?
That was Leelah’s Law?
Leelah’s Law, yeah. There’s so much depressing news going on and although that story was sad, the message which Leelah gave in the Tumblr post that she did was very hopeful, and it wasn’t covered anywhere. I wanted to say something about it. It took a couple of months to figure out exactly what I wanted to song to be about, but once I had the idea for that, I pretty much wrote it in a day and then played it at a gig on that night. It wasn’t the finished product of the song and I came up with a couple of other bits afterwards, but yeah it was another one that happened quite quickly once I figured out what it was.
The video focusses on two fifteen-year-old protagonists trying to find their feet and their position in life, do you think it’s important to give a voice to young people and teenagers with your music?
This is something I’ve been thinking about recently. There’s not a lot of young artists who actually represent young people in a genuine way, and not in a way that’s exaggerated or overdone. In the last few years we’ve had a couple, like Earl Sweatshirt who is a role model for young and mixed-race people, and all the stuff he talks about is so honest, so relatable for people who are in similar positions to him or people who have been oppressed because of the way they are. Also Archie Marshall and his project King Krule, which I feel is a lot closer to home for me. However, I feel like right now at this moment, there’s not many artists who do that. I think it is important, not that I would compare myself lyrically to either of those artists. Loyle Carner is one that is definitely, definitely a voice for young people, even if a lot of his stories are about his personal life, but he’s very inspiring. Of course it’s important for young people to have a voice, to be given a voice and to tell stories about young people that aren’t patronizing or overdone and from the perspective of people who are actually young rather than it being written by a forty-year-old or whatever.
“There’s not a lot of young artists who actually represent young people in a genuine way, and not in a way that’s exaggerated or overdone.”— Declan Mckenna
I guess even if they try their hardest, it risks coming across as patronizing.
Exactly, it’s never real. In some ways there is a surge in young talent coming up, but I’d like to see more of it and more of it that’s genuine and represents me and other kids like me.
One really young artist I can think of is Billie Eilish, who was thirteen-years-old when her song “Ocean Eyes” came out.
Wow! I don’t think I’ve heard that. That’s insane, I’ll have to check her out.
So, what theme - political, cultural or otherwise - would you like to take on next?
I don’t know… there’s so much going on! There’s just so much to write about that now I feel like I have the problem of choosing something. I feel like I need to write a song about George Osborne because he’s such a prick! Maybe something more English this time round, because I tend to write about events that have happened in other countries and I haven’t done anything about home politics yet. There’s obviously a lot of stuff going on at the minute with that, you know, Corbyn and Cameron giving it large. Honestly, I’m not sure, because I generally just go “okay, I’m going to write about this” and I do it in like ten seconds. I guess we’ll see, although I’d like to write a kind of happier song. Most of my songs tend to be quite hopeful but with dark undertones, so I’d like to write something slightly happier.
You’re right, the songs don’t necessarily come across as unhappy, although the subject matter might be quite serious. They’re not really depressing in any way.
That’s one thing I’ve taken from The Beatles and David Bowie, because they write songs that sound really happy but actually have a serious undertone. Songs like “Oh You Pretty Things” by David Bowie and “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” by The Beatles are quite child-like and playful, but are genuinely good songs and serious.
Finally, can we expect a debut record anytime soon?
Early next year. I’m going to say that, but honestly, I can’t say exactly when because I don’t know! I’m going to finish recording it this summer though.

Rules: tag 20 followers you want to get to know better Tagged by: @winteraddict Do you always pick on the shysestest persons on the internet? My inner me wants to ignore this and just go away but I'll try to do it, tx. Name: I have 2 useless names I don't use. Nicknames: Let's say Jo. Star Sign: Gemini Height: 172 cm Sexual Orientation: straight, but there was a youtuber (I'm serious lol) (Chechnyan girl from Russia, living in Germany, playing guitar and stuff, firm guitar, mild voice, strong lyrics meaning, boyish look, actually she was around 35 but looked younger, and I got her CD shipped and I had sort of a crush and that's it but now I know that in 0,0000001% I could orientate to anyone) Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw Favorite Color: yellow Favorite Animal: capybara (btw there're nutrias in Slovenia which look like mini-capybaras (they are like in the river in the center of Ljubljana city)), elephant & so much more Time Right Now: 3:13am (and I have to be somewhere like before 4am but I'll be fine cuz I had an extended weekend aka free Monday anyway) Cat or Dog Person: we don't wan't to generalise, don't we, there were dogs I got along to and cats I got along to, and dogs who tolerated me and cats who ignored me. Okay, dog person for sure. Happy days, been more social with (and I'm not even social). Favorite Fictional Character: Holden Caulfield (again ...), Franny Glass, Zooey Glass Favorite Singer/Band: Mark Lanegan, Josh Homme (QOTSA), Morphine, Nada Surf, Lana Del Rey, Hole, Arctic Monkeys, Jake Bugg, My Bloody Valentine, Minor Victories, Mudhoney, Courtney Barnett, Miley Cyrus since 2014 or sth, Gov't Mule, Laibach, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, David Brent, Weird Al Yankovic, Sia, Dandy Warhols, Saul Williams, Dax Riggs, Slash, Myless Kennedy etc etc Dream Trip: I went on a trip once, it was awful. :C It's not about location, it's about ... well how the trip goes, people, and I complicate too much to answer a simple question. A concert is a good reason for a trip. In general, I think Caucasian countries, east-east-east European countries and Central Asia are underrated locations with crazy nature. & I don't want to be one of those couch-"activists" but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDIbdE2A7cc (So maybe my dream trip is Afganistan before the war?) Dream Job: again, depends on all the circumstances. As a kid I wanted to be a farmer (more like an agriculturist and fruit grower to be exact), in primary school biologist and later historian, in high school I was kinda writing and was all for linguistics (still am), now I find physics the most interesting but my uni situation is shitty (I don't really study that much in the moment, I'm working, living in rented place etc) but ask me again in a few years. I don't know, I would like to have an ok life as a whole, so "dream job" doesn't mean sth specifically relevant dreaming about to me. And ok life means me being ok and other people being ok and rainbows that connect darkness and light. When Was This Blog Created: last sj season? Current Number of Followers: Recently I got my 100th follower (porn blog, congratulations!), now 110ish. I personally sometimes just forget to follow, I see a name in my dashboard a lot and I'm sure I'm following (but I actually don't). Also if I've ever unfollowed you, it was probably because there was huge amount of non-sj-content that I liked and it occupied me too much. What Made You Decide to Make a Tumblr: firstly I was just scrolling, then made the account to like things to "save" them cuz there was probably not enough space on my desktop or sth, then I posted my first gif (Kenneth&PP), then posted my second gif, then I realised I need to change the avatar (ohhhhh the effort) that my account is even "verified" and my posts appear anywhere, basically I'm here to appreciate ski jumpers and ski jumping-related things and I can't do that in real life to that crazy extent (the sillier the better)(memes, ART and glued pictures are the best) (though me and my (male) co-worker recently realised we are on the same "forum" and have talked about ski jumping before bhahahahaha)). Why Did You Pick Your URL: it's sort of a variation/wordplay of (part of) my real name, and when I created it I thought it has sort of Polish connotation to it cuz of Wislawa Szymborska and ski jumping-fan/meme world is very Polish and it wasn't taken yet and so I'm just gonna stick with this url I guess. Also I don't think I will ever go forever away because I need to keep up with Domen content.
I tag: Uhh ... I will just tag tumblrs from the first page of the list (aka new-ish followers) who seem enough into sj and are... active ...  and are not a porn blog. So please um don't be offended or annoyed or sth ... just ignore OR participate if you want and you haven’t yet (AKA participate in ignoring OR don't ignore if you don't want and you haven't (not ignored) yet). And if you have already done it, just take it as a “hi” from a stranger who is now too far away for you to answer to him/her anyway. @the-fairy-and-me @sarcasticlilkid @magioghvitetekopper @stochmarket @slovenian-roses @skijumping-leah @sophieskijumping @miracleoftheskyskijumping @nefilim7754 @freewildfangirl @flyingtande (and I'm posting this next day 16:58pm because I don't trust my night-writing (this text shouldn't be that long lol!))  And if I didn’t tag you: hi! .... in the words of @winteraddict ...“ and whoever feels like doing this, but hasn’t already done it - not sure how late I am to this party :-)) “
