finally drawing everybody's animal form after like 4 years into this au. randomly, I started with Touou. (plus bonus hanamiya bc i don't feel like coming up with the rest of kirisaki)

Aomine: black jaguar/panther. this is was an easy one, considering its a canon comparison (it's his Animal Instinct). that being said, it really does fit him! a rather lethargic creature, he's often napping in the sun or found lounging around on any free surface, but you sure don't want to get on his bad side.

Momoi: I have an agenda which is to include Momoi as a GoM any chance I get, so I very well couldn't have her as the only non-shifter in the Teiko pack now could I? That being said, it was super hard to place her, but after a little research, I decided to pick a species that highlighted her intelligence (a parrot) and then picked a subspecies that matched her aesthetically. therefore, we have the galah (aka a pink cockatoo). she's a friendly and vocal little bird and can often be seen perching on Kuroko and/or Aomine when shifted.

Sakurai: a more recent epiphany, originally I thought he was going to remain a non-shifter. but after getting a really dumb idea, I decided to double-check to see if there were any creatures that both matched my idea and fit sakurai aesthetically/characteristically. the idea? to check to see what animals consume mushrooms as part of their diet. lo and behold, one such species is the hedgehog, which I happen to think aesthetically matches sakurai pretty perfectly. it was like a little epiphany. sakurai and hedgehogs are both small and round but a little prickly. perfection.

Imayoshi: another character who remained status-less for a long time. however, upon re-watching the series I concluded that Imyaoshi is very snake-like in his expressions. after i decided that, I simply googled black breeds of snakes. eastern rat snakes are non-venomous and are therefor constrictors, who wrap around and squeeze their prey. a slow, drawn out sort of style of killing, which I think matches his conniving, slightly sadistic nature quite well. they are cute little things though and rather non-aggressive towards humans.

Hanamiya: a canon comparison (the spider's web), so he was a character who always had a second-skin when I came up with the au. however, it would be damn right goofy to just have a normal spider try to be threatening in my mind, so I tried to come up with other variants than a simple black widow/whatever the animators drew for the Spider's Web sequence. in the fic, I wrote him to be a goliath birdeater tarantula, the biggest species of arachnid, but upon reflection, I decided that it was quite important to me to keep him as a spider, that way webs would still come into play. so, I sacrificed size and looked into other, more threatening-looking and acting spiders that also spun webs and then I learned about the funnel web spider, a species native to Australia (of course). technically, they more so build spider web nests, as opposed to traditional, airborne webs, but they're fascinating little creatures. look at a close up of them too, quite frightening! they also have some of the biggest fangs relative to their body size amongst their species. they also do threatening little dances where they fan out their limbs and also have venom. their venom is extremely toxic, and can cause severe drops in blood pressure, comas, or in extreme cases, organ failure and death; so if you ever encounter one, be extremely cautious, as they are very aggressive/territorial (I personally hope to never encounter one in my life-time; though they are funnily sassy-seeming in the videos I've seen). males are typically smaller than the females, but I decided to make Hanamiya an exception and have him be on the larger side (the whole species ranges from 1cm-5cm typically) but the largest male on record was 7.9cm (a little over 3 inches)!!

I don’t know if this has been mentioned before but I had a Brain Blast™ moment while making coffee and realized another reason Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time feels “off” to me when comparing it to the original trilogy: there are EXCLUSIVELY mammal villains. 

The original trilogy’s villain lineup was consistently varied in its animal class of villains. 

Sly 1: (in order of appearance in-game) amphibian, mammal, reptile, mammal, bird (robot but still)

Sly 2: (in order of appearance in-game) reptile, mammal, arachnid/dridder, mammal, bird + mammal (Neyla) + bird again (Clockla technically)

Sly 3: (in order of appearance in-game) mammal, a gad-dayum mask, mammal, bird, bird, mammal 

But Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time? All mammals. 

I’ve had issues with TiT’s choice for its villain species (El Hefe NEEDED to be something other than a tiger. We already had a tiger villain [2 tigers if you are on Team Tiger for Neyla]! Why was he not a leopard or jaguar? Come on) but realizing this it’s like... such a missed opportunity? When you’re using a world of animals, you have so much at your disposal. I mean, the Sly series has canonized that fish and bugs can be sapient anthro people. But they just stick with mammals? Absolutely RUDE I say!

I am actually not a massive hater on TiT, I do genuinely appreciate Sanzaru trying to bring back our beloved series and did think they put their heart into it, but there’s always something new to find that makes me wonder what could have been if some directions had been changed behind the scenes. 

Also we just think too hard into things we shouldn’t in an attempt to stimulate our poor Sly-lacking brains.

What would your 4 ocs daemons be?

Wow!

I haven't thought about them in a minute. Mostly because my ideas have changed and adapted, and those names/characters were broader and more generalized placeholders, but still...

Okay... so...

Desdemona would have some kind of cat dæmon, but a big cat of some kind. A jaguar or a puma would probably work best, and if the former, probably a black jaguar - something that'll blend into the shadows.

Quinn, as a witch, would have to have a bird dæmon of some kind (per the rules of Pullman's universe) - so I'm thinking some kind of corvid? A raven or a crow or a magpie. Or, if I wanted to lean a little more into the exotic, I'd say a hooded pitohui bird (look 'em up, they're fun).

Ysabeau would have something reptilian, preferably a snake (because they shed their skin), but I think a chameleon would also work, or maybe some kind of monitor.

Julian, just to round it out, would have some kind of bug/insect or arachnid. I'm seeing a spider of some kind, due to his patience and cunning.

what’s funny is that the US has more than its fair share of deadly wildlife, too

bears of the black and brown variety

an assortment of potentially deadly rattlesnakes and other pitvipers (eastern and western diamondbacks, mojave rattlers, southern pacific rattlers, timber rattlers, massasaugas, copperheads, cottonmouths... like, they’re everywhere. really) plus coral snakes, which are elapids and Very Venomous and though evidently they go out of their way to Not Bite, they can still ruin your day and potentially kill you

we’ve got bigass crocadilians in ~the south~, which include american alligators which are Huge and Dangerous, and also american crocodiles which are Huger and Dangerouser.

then there are the mountain lions/cougars, and also literal jaguars in the southwest (fun fact: jaguars kill their prey by just fucking biting them in the head and piercing their skulls)

but oh! it’s not just the predators/venomous animals that you gotta watch out for!

Moose will fuck a nigga up, too! So will bison!

And oh, can’t forget the spiders! Black widows probably won’t kill you, but they’ll wreck your shit and make you miserable for days on end. Brown recluse spiders also probably won’t kill you, but you just might lose a limb.

also in the arachnid class are the scorpions, most of which aren’t Super Dangerous, but at least one of which, the ~arizona bark scorpion~ can kill your kids and your grandma and can ruin the day of a healthy adult.

and yet!!! we’ve got all these Dangerous Critters running around, but I feel like literally no one i know has ever actually encountered any of these animals in a potentially dangerous situation. i mean i’ve seen exactly One alligator in miami (which was also the first alligator that my mom, who LIVED in miami for like 40 years, ever saw in the wild), i’ve seen a few black widow spiders but was never in danger of being bitten by any of them... i’ve never encountered any venomous snakes, or bears, and i don’t live in places where moose or mountain lions would be problematic.

but like??

idk i just think it’s cool that there’s all this dangerous shit lurking around and yet for some reason most of us literally do not have to worry about it at all.
