As someone who came from seiyuu fandom, I don't really care what characters they are playing as long as they are selling the same talent/skills so its understandable its easier for me to accept it. Cheng Ping and Vesper Noir have this masculine nonchalant straight public image as celebrity. Both have the talents or skills needed to reach higher and become popular. But both of them have bad background record that they are hot-tempered. In Cheng Ping's case, he tried to defend someone or righteous to point out what's wrong hence he provoke influential veteran artists. He also have a background that he swear a lot as livestreamer before he became an actor so transitioning from that is hard. He's just being himself as livestreamer but as actor, he need to sell an image that's not him. As for Vesper, I'll not say who is his PL but let's just say his content is for mature audience. He swear like a sailor and make dirty jokes about himself but never targeted it to his audience so I say he's still decent compare to others. He might be a lawbreaker but definitely not a bad guy.

i lowkey know az made the first move. steph is kind of shy (read: wishy-washy) about romance, like it's all in her head like lara jean, and she didn't really get az, this cool qb football girl, liked her, the rainbow glitter queen. and when az made the move, steph was very very surprised. also, she was happy and probably had tears because of how happy she was and definitely hugged her and az probably kissed her.

they always need to be touching in someway. they cuddle a lot. i feel like az's head is always in steph's lap, or az's arms are wrapped around steph, or hands casually on legs and arms. like tbh, not everyone has that vibe of being half when apart, but steph and az are definitely whole together. they complete one another. this is the hill i die on.

angelica kisses kelsey first. i know angelica makes a lot of moves first because angelica goes after what she wants, but i feel like there's no set up. no romantic lake side picnic or party, they're just together and bam! angelica kisses her and is like "i like you." very bluntly as she does.

kelsey helps babysit lakelynn, but she cannot dance and angelica has taught lakelynn to mock her. poor kelsey. anyways! lakelynn definitely thinks they're married when she can talk and shit, and has called them her moms. it makes for a fun conversation on the subway and coffee shops.

their first date was pancakes, but their first trip was to alaska in the summer and kelsey taught angelica how to fish and prepare for the winter. also, i see them kayaking a lot that summer and swimming in the water (if they can) and kissing in the water, on the kayaks, sunset kisses - all that jazz. overall: it's about the alaskan romance.

keira made the first move post lindsay kissing her. lindsay feels like an idiot for what she did, and she's confused and conflicted. but beyond that, keira is her best friend. lindsay can be herself with keira and she feels like she's ruined that.

2. lindsay feels safe being vulnerable with keira. lindsay is always on her guard, because tears is weakness, and pain is weakness, but with keira she can show her pain and exhaustion, she can cry and be silly and goofy - keira's the only one who sees all of lindsay.

3. i see them watching guilty pleasure shit together, like riverdale and bad movies. i see them making big batches of popcorn, chilling on the couch and booing at these things, and hating them, but they can't stop. it's tradition at this point.

again, these two bitches were each other's first kiss, but theirs i see as a thomas j and vada type of kiss (the diving into the water to avoid bees and all)

hear me out, but are they the cloe and sasha of our verse? have they gone for halloween as cloe and sasha and also isis and torrance? yes. i 100% think they do couple/matching costumes. always. even when they have gfs, they're gonna have matching and their gfs can match the theme or pound sand ig.

bonus bonus: bellamy is the only white girl to date who is allowed to braid jess's hair. like i see them sitting in the living room, tv on, and bellamy braiding her hair like a seasoned pro, because you know momma cece taught her!

delilah/marnie

they have a cat. this isn't important, but it is. you know marnie brought home an elderly cat for them to care for and they're lesbian cat mothers. i also feel like delilah makes marnie vow and pinky swear to not adopt more than one.

marnie bawled through her vows. like i think delilah had to read them while marnie covered her eyes and bawled away. meanwhile, i think marnie, at the wedding, wore a pants suit at the reception and an align cut or mermaid at the wedding because she wanted to be a princess.

marnie and delilah do meddle in their siblings lives. like marnie wants sienna and lucas together so bad she could throw up - even more so than aria and xander. lbr, marnie and delilah are more invested in sienna and lucas, but still, marnie doesn't want xander single.

while marnie makes delilah come out of her shell because she's goofy and everything, delilah makes marnie calm down and grow up a bit. marnie needs to slow down and think and plan and budget, but she cannot alone. delilah is lowkey her other half. without delilah, marnie would feel as if she lost a limb or worse.

the first song they danced to married was wonderful world by louis armstrong. fight me. idk why. it just feels right!

keily/maren

keily sometimes doesn't trust maren. some backstory: keily did have a crush on maren in school, and i think they've known one another since grade school and i think she was one of keily's first crushes, but because of the class difference and who maren associates with, it makes keily guarded. and then she began dating leo, so she chiseled at her wall, but at the end of the day as we currently stand, keily hasn't lowered her guard and is prepared for maren to always hurt and betray her.

the day maren showed up and helped keily/the washingtons at the restaurant was the day keily dropped her guard entirely, despite what jesse felt like. it was the moment she felt respected and not judged by this rich girl, and ngl, i also think it was the day keily decided she loved her.

keily kisses maren first. and i feel like they kiss on leo’s boat - that they obviously stole. and i feel like it’s also sunset, because why not make it romance?

i feel like keily teaches maren how to fish on leo’s stolen boat because the kiss. and i also feel like keily teaches maren a lot of basic things, like shucking shellfish, cleaning shrimp and fish, climbing trees, driving boats - just things a rich white girl wouldn’t do on her own.

keily definitely has a place on the island all her own and she’s never shown the boys or her sisters, and the truest act of trust is her bringing maren there. but we’re probably like months away from this!

joel/nadia

no one would believe how they are behind closed doors. joel is mr suave, the guy all the girls want, and nadia comes off as prim and proper, and most would assume she's a stuck up priss, but the shit they get up to is unmatched.

i feel like the whole reason that they happened is joel and andrew and the other boys were throwing a football or a frisbee and it landed near her, as she was reading, and he runs over and begins to instantly flirt with her and she covered a hand over her eyes and eyed him and thought "he's p hot" and let him waffle on and then she saw him running on the beach one morning because she was paddle boarding and they began talking and have very little in common, but it's a summer fling so why not? and here they are today.

i feel like they’re constantly laying on hammocks. idk why, joel feels like a man who loves a hammock and is constantly pulling nadia into one with him.

when in bed, and nadia is trying to read and joel’s trying to tease her, she often reads what she’s reading aloud to tease him. at first, she probably did this to kill the mood and realized, with a lot of delight, that he enjoyed these shenanigans. 

i feel like joel sings a lot of backstreet boys at her. mostly because of to all the boys, but i see him singing i want it that way to her a lot. and mostly when she’s either reading or cooking, and into hairbrushes or spoons, and she swats at him but always ends up in a heavy make out session or worse. 

jade/hadley

so i feel like they met the first week of college, rushing kat. like i see hadley there in her glitter makeup and green jacket and jade’s heart skipped a beat and she went over, and the rest was history. also, i imagine hadley basically living at jade’s place their freshman year and they made out a lot. 

hadley definitely gets the anna delvy treatment, because jade is like i live in the land of luxury so if you’re my bestie you do get to ride in private jets and get spa treatments and nice gifts because i’m doing all this shit, and i don’t want to do it alone. i feel like they do fight about this, but in jade’s mind, hadley’s basically her wife at this point. so i mean ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ what can you do?

jade sketches hadley, and often. now she’s not the best, but i feel like it’s compulsive at this point to sketch hadley - and not just her face, like sometimes her hand, or the way her legs are. 

in my mind, their aesthetic is that scenery in ikwydls, at the house party because that’s jade’s house in my mind, and they’re on steps looking out at the sea in the dark and there’s hundreds of stars and the smell of a fire and they’re covered in glitter. no matter the setting, that’s them.

i feel like they’re the ones who do pillow fights. 

tally/iris

tally truly lets her guard down around iris. i feel like iris is someone she protects, but it’s different. with nate, she feels lowkey like she owes him and that he’s vulnerable because of janie, but with iris she doesn’t have to worry about her in these ways. tally can just be herself, relax, cry, be open and vulnerable and admit that she doesn’t have all the answers, that cases are too hard and too complex for her.

tally always makes iris tea when she has nightmares about her sisters, and this tea comes with a back rub and staying up well past iris falling asleep, rubbing her back, to make sure no more nightmares happen.

iris is the only one who knows tally cries about what her parents did to her. i feel like she never cried when they threw her out, didn’t even cry privately when she lived at nate’s, but she has cried about it to iris.

i feel like iris got tally their dog, backup. like obviously these bitches need a guard dog, but imagine iris knowing tally needed something to love unconditionally and bought him i die.

they’re goofy bitches. no one would expect tally to be silly, but these two get into flour and food fights, laugh in the tub, take baths together - they just always know how to make the other fucking smile!

(Temporary) Final Thoughts of Pomefiore Arc

Since this is my official first-time experience of playing this 'live', I haven't read the translation fully. So, I'll probably re-doing this after reading/watching everything.

Essentially what I like and what I'm mixed with.

I will first address something that has been bugging me since early update. And that's about the delay. Now, I'm not going to talk about the actual delay, but the reaction. Lots of people complaining and blaming the staff and just... Guys, give them some slack. Do you know what happens when you rush production? You'll get something like Frozen 2, where they had to edit so much stuff in just 6 months before the release date because of the failed test screening. As someone who once made an RPG, coding is hard, especially something massive like Twisted-Wonderland. Sitting in front of your computer for six hours straight, coding and beta testing over and over, making the OST, scripting, voice acting. This is a massive group project and it can't be rushed even if you want to unless you want it to be glitching so bad like the Ghost Marriage incident (or was it Fairy Gala?)

Especially during this pandemic and all its protocol. My parents are professors and even they don't go to campus every day, instead, they use zoom to teach and for work meetings. I barely go out from my own house except for physical therapy and volunteer work, which usually once in two weeks because we take turns. Are you saying the staff must risk their health just for a gacha game? Guys, they might be a professional, but they are still human. Cut some slacks. Be grateful we haven't gone into absolute development hell. Yes, the Halloween event was big, but Pomefiore Arc is part of the Main Story, of course, they will give extra care compare to filler event (which might be created in the first place to give them more time in Pomefiore Arc development, which is why we don't get any Christmas event)

On to the story, I don't know how to rate the scale, but it might be slightly lower than Scarabia Arc. Can you really compare a school talent show to a rebellion? Also, in paper, this should be more light-hearted than the four arcs before it.

However, the lack of stake didn't reduce the content quality. From what I remember, there is not a single chapter that can be count as filler, from Yuu's befriending Mickey, the understandably training arc, Vil's unique magic, Deuce and Epel bonding, and the actual VDC (but I do think the tour around the campus with Riddle and Trey was a bit boring)

Also, slight worldbuilding. We finally see Sage Island in its full glory and found out RSA is a freaking Disney Castle and on the same island!

This also gives us possibly the longest rhythm game, plus chibi Jamil rapping. There's just a lot of singing in this episode, which is understandable.

I appreciate Yuu finally taking notice of the Great Seven dreams, which I hope we can get more of this and actually do something with this and not just Disney Movie references, which later in the Episode shows Yuu sort of connecting their dream and Vil's poisoning attempt.

Speaking of Vil, he's a fantastic character. Okay, I aware that we can't like all characters, there will be haters anywhere. But it seems like Vil is hated a lot because he's 'arrogant' and 'only care about beauty'. Guys, he's not Jeffery Star. This Episode shows Vil as someone much more: a hard worker, passionate in acting, and a great teacher. I always see Vil as the more mature of the cast, the mentor. And he's also basically bullied when he was a child. "TV told me how to feel" as they would say, and children believe everything they saw on TV, so of course they would see Vil as the villain. It's also interesting, as someone mentioned earlier, how Vil is a foil to Leona, where Leona just gave up, Vil doesn't stop and keep striving, and that's an admirable trait. He just wants to get the protagonist role for once and break the norm.

Another character that I like is the new combo, DeuPel (Deuce and Epel). I should've known that they will be bad boy buddies with one trying to get away from the past, while the other wants to embrace it but can't at the moment. The shouting moment at the beach is wonderful despite I haven't read the full translation. Separately, Deuce shines so much with his willingness to learn. Meanwhile, Epel finally respecting Vil and all the training is probably one of the best character development so far.

Why one of the best? Because Kalim has great character development. How he grows to be more mature in this Episode really warms my heart. Again, I need to read/watch the translation to appreciate this more. The way he reassures Jamil to take the part as the main singer, but at the same time work hard to maybe get a spot as well is great.

Sadly, because Epel taking the spotlight as Deuce's partner, Ace was sort of underused. Same as Jamil, but sort of worse since he overblotted in the last chapter but has less development than Kalim. Rook also might seem doesn't do much, but he's more as Vil's support, which is why I kinda forgive him.

But, the highlight of this is probably our very own Snow White, Neige Blanche. Can I just say how much I appreciate that Niege doesn't have a dark side? He's a sweet boy and I just really appreciate that considering we're surrounded by a cast of not so great people, it's kinda refreshing to see someone just pure. The dwarves' design are also adorable, can't really say more since we haven't seen them in depth.

And since this is a School Festival Arc, all 22 students have a cameo. I know some people who are thrilled to finally Idia in the main story and to meed Che'nya again since Episode 1.

Unfortunately, Crowley proved to be useless again. When he finally appears in this final update I screamed: "SIR! Where were you?!"

Let's go back with Rook. What he did in the last update was definitely shocking. I knew something is wrong when he smiles after Vil's monologing. So this is the only time through the update I read the translation. And I sort of get it.

So, Rook and Vil's relationship should mirror how the Evil Queen and the huntsman. I mentioned above that Rook is Vil's support and I mean that. Rook and Vil's relationship is another level of prefect and their vice. It's just fascinating. Rook is just as reliable as Jade, but also not afraid to against his perfect like Jamil, also is not afraid to say something against his perfect, unlike Trey.

And it shows in this finale. Rook is always praising the beauty of things and Vil's hard works is truly a sight, but the way Vil unable to believe in himself, it clouded what is supposed to be something truly beautiful. Compare to Neige who is basically Snow White, the purest Disney Princess, there's just no way Rook would not pick RSA. I admit, I was pissed when RSA win, but when Rook started talking, I knew there was something more. And I finally found it. Rook's message is basically "believe in yourself", the most Disney-thing ever.

Saving the best (or worst) for last, I was terrified when Grim happened. We already guess that Grim is the same monster in the prologue, but I never thought it will happen so soon. The flashed of the monster and Yuu's carriage is also a point, but we have so little info that he can't pull a conclusion yet. Is this a timeloop? Is this a vision? This is the darkest ending we've gotten and I'm scared of what will happen.

Overall, Pomefiore Arc is an enjoyable Episode, definitely a step up emotionally. The cast are wonderful as always, the theme of hard work and believing in yourself are spot on, Vil's hero journey is great (I'll give more explanation soon). Great job, team.

@Community fans, I just thought of this while eating dinner, and it was too cool (at least, IMO) not to share. Have fun with it!

Okay, so, remember the brightest timeline from “Remedial Chaos Theory?” This episode made me wanna find a group of strangers to be a found family with and solidly cemented found family as my favorite trope in all of media

Well, obviously, the lesson to take away from that is that Jeff can (and does) often go overboard in shutting others down. Kinda like an anchor - he can tell the study group when to stop and reign them in, but sometimes he’s too intense and ends up dragging everyone down instead. 

Some people even jokingly say that this is the best timeline because Pierce doesn’t get to tell his Eartha Kitt story. And he even has the perfect segue to do so - whereas in the other timelines, Pierce has to kinda shoehorn the story in there, he doesn’t have to for this one because Troy literally says that Jeff sucks harder than an airplane bathroom. And yet he chooses not to tell the story! 

And while I believe that this timeline is the best because of those reasons, I also believe there’s one major player being overlooked: Britta.

Britta is a buzzkill. The show has established this (though personally, I don’t see it) continuously, ever since the season 1 episode “The Science of Illusion.” (leading to one of the most tragically funny lines in the entire series for me - “Knock knock! Who’s there, cancer? Oh, good, come on in, i ThoUGht iT wAS bRitTA”)

But a surprising thing to note is that the best timeline, this timeline, is the only one where Britta is allowed to be herself. Britta, the notorious buzzkill, actually starts the fun. Britta, who is constantly dunked on in the show for ruining things, is the one who lifts the group’s spirits. 

I guess one could take that to mean Britta is, actually, the heart of the show, to paraphrase from Jeff in “The Science of Illusion.” 

And this is what makes me so upset about the Britta haters in the fandom and the way her character was treated by others in the show. Britta brings so MUCH (the group was basically/indirectly formed because of her) but she still gets so dunked on by the rest of the group and a (significant minority) of the fandom. 

But I guess that’s also what I admire about Britta. Her determination. She gets hated on day after day after day (thanks for that, Dan Harmon & co.; look, I love the guy’s writing, but...like...he’s not perfect), but she still comes back, day after day after day, ready to love and wanting, at her core, to be a good person. She could have become so jaded and cynical after being constantly hated on, but she still wants to do right by her friends and be good. 

Britta has her flaws, sure, but people often forget that Britta brings a lot to the group because she’s low-hanging fruit to laugh at. And I think the fandom needs to hear this every once in a while: Britta is more than a flawed, hypocritical soapbox Sadie. Britta is a kickass role model, overcompensating for what she lacks with her heart. 

I know Britta would hate this comparison, but I’ve always felt that Britta is the Cinderella of Community - a kind and caring female badass trapped in a place that doesn’t (always) appreciate her worth, even though she’s making said place so much better. And “Remedial Chaos Theory” is a good reminder of that.

A sudden snow storm

Part 2: March

(Okay, second time I’m writing this post, as soon as I finish it, I’ll post it). 

Disclaimer: I try to keep things objective (if I include my personal opinion, it’s in cursive and in brackets), but I’m biased because of the XZ friendly content I’m usually exposed to and by my own views of their situation. Open to discussion, but please make sure you’ve enough information to do so. 

First of all, let’s keep in mind that I present here a rather negative part of the C- society. That’s because we are placing a magnifying glass on a small part of the fandom, so by no means all C-fans are like this. These are all a minority. 

However, in the midst of so negative things, we find the reason why I think XZ will overcome this. He is overcoming it. 

Targeting his endorsements

So, taking it from the first part, antis and haters were furious because they believed that XZ’s Studio had paid w/ibo to take his hashtag down of the hot search list. Some of them started to say that the only acceptable outcome for them was that XZ retired from the entertainment industry. 

That night, Olay was to air a livestream with a product that XZ was going to endorse, and antis realized that they had a new way to express their anger. They turned to the “live comment” option of the livestream and flooded it with hate comments about XZ. Their comments and their interventions during the event made it impossible to progress adequately, and the announcement of XZ endorsing the product had to be put off.

So when they realized what they could do, antis and haters started to announce that didn’t just reject the products endorsed by XZ, they also rejected the brands that worked with him. In the face of such controversy and boycott, more and more brands chose another spoke person temporarily for their commercials and banners, removing XZ’s from their websites. Some of the companies even terminated their contracts with him, fearing the boycott from the antis. 

From March, the antis centered themselves around the topic “Not buying products XZ endorses”, making his value go downwards at least for that time.  

Douban

By the 3rd day ao3 was down, the reality sank in and people turned to douban, were C/QL, The Joy of Life, Jade Dynasty were in the top 3, all of them series were XZ is lead actor or secondary actor. The antis placed bad reviews on each drama XZ acted in, to the point of bringing down the score of C/QL from 8’5 to 7’9 in a single day (we are talking of around 1′5 million reviews in total), affecting every project he has worked on since the beginning of his career as an actor.

Public scorn

XZ as well as XZ fans became the objective of public scorn. From the 1st of March, some of the accusers apologized for “the problems caused”, and the one that had led the report posted a public apology and deleted every post related to the reporting. However, it seemed obvious to the rest of the users that they were apologizing against their will, and that they still thought they weren’t wrong, but it was done in an effort to preserve XZ’s public image, as well as their own image as XZ’s fans.

The conflict ceased between XZ’s fans and cp fans, now uniting in an effort to do damage control. They agreed to bring down the tone of the discussion, and once things cooled down a bit, XZ Studio posted a public apology, asking people to support their idol rationally, to speak and act carefully, as well as saying that XZ was currently quarantined at home.

With the attention on the antis, they started to dig up the dirt of XZ’s fans. It’s a sad truth that some of his fans had taken sometimes unreasonable measures to give him the spotlight, such as:

Making him the center of attention in a tv drama in which another actor was the male lead. They took over the community in w/ibo and started to remove all of the other actor’s fans from the group.

Some fans attacked WYB, so XZ wouldn’t have to “share” his success from C/QL with him. They reported WYB for not having a “host degree” (whatever that is). This was shot down by a statement from Hunan TV, by the way.

(By the way, WYB’s antis also tried to attack him using this incident, saying that his company and he had paid millions to create the smear campaign against XZ, to bring him down so WYB wouldn’t have to “share” endorsements with him... but these were all deemed ridiculous by most people, and it is). 

Attacking whoever says that they don’t have any interest in XZ’s works (a professor was asked to have a look at his works, and he refused, so XZ’s stans started to attack him).

(A lot of people resented XZ’s fans for the 2/27 incident, and wanted a scapegoat. You can’t chase hundreds of people on the Internet, it’s easier to make a celebrity your target, which also hurts the people who offended you in the first place. It’s a “you take away what I love, so I’ll hurt what you love” kind of thinking. However, “professional” antis... they have their own agenda, which I’m not completely sure of what it is). 

XZ Studio’s apology didn’t do much and the drama continued to unfold. Maybe XZ’s Studio wanted to wait for the storm to pass, and since acknowledging the issue would give it importance, they waited until they couldn’t put it off anymore. I don’t know if this was actually right or wrong, but people weren’t satisfied with this apology. 

XZ’s fans would try to argue with the antis, and thus keeping the image of obsessive fans, even if many of them were actually right.

Fanfiction writers, mostly from the BJYX fandom, would receive insults and attacks from antis and XZ’s stans still pursuing their original stance, so a lot of content has disappeared.

(To this point: I don’t like RPS. I don’t read RPS fanfics. I didn’t like seeing them and adjusted the filters in ao3 so I could only see fanfics from CQL. But  attacking the authors this way is also terribly wrong).

To take responsibility

XZ had previously signed contracts with several companies, with WJJW being the main stockholder. Since he was under so many companies, none of them wanted to take responsibility of the incident and try to solve it. Thus, it was left to XZ’s Studio and his public relations team to try to fix this problem. 

Investors, directors and brands’ representatives all thought that this would take at least half a year for XZ to recover from this blow. It also depends greatly on how his next work is received by the general public. He still has the support from his fans, but that alone wasn’t enough in the face of such boycott.

Though the reaction of the entertainment industry will be detailed below, it’s also noteworthy that in the first days, some people (the MC from his 爱不是si interview, a critic) posted that XZ should step up and say something about the matter. There were only a couple of cases, and the positive responses outnumbers them, but since they are public figures, it attracted a lot of attention. 

(I’m not so surprised that they’d choose to side with the public opinion... but to add oil to flames like this doesn’t seem very kind to me. But, again, this a very competitive industry). 

XZ’s fans public welfare project 

So, in the midst of this situation, which was very serious at the time, XZ’s fans public welfare group was founded with the support of XZ’s Studio. 

It served to contrast with the disruptive, obsessive behaviour of the sasaengs, and proved that idols can use their influence to unite a large group of people to serve purposes that are beneficial to the society. 

It came in a “good” moment, because if nothing else, XZ can’t afford that the first that comes to mind to the general public when they see him or his fans is this small group of people, who are the representation of the worst part of fandom culture.

(Since this project has the support of his studio, he must know of it and must have given his approval. But he is not the one to actually initiate the project, that was a collective effort from his fans, to do welfare projects in his name. He collaborates with welfare projects, he has done it before, and did it again in June. This a reflection of a more positive part of fan quan culture, which will be explained in part 3).

However, because he was in the middle of great controversy and criticism, this move was also considered “hypocritical and insincere” by the antis. Nonetheless, the influence such a large group of people have is undeniable (in promoting local commerce in this case), and the local representatives thanked them for their support. They kept on with their projects these months, usually promoting agricultural products from impoverished provinces. They were also praised by the media for the results they achieved.

For those who are inclined to doubt whether this was a move to improve his image, here it’s a compilation of charity and public welfare projects that XZ’s fans pushed forward in 2019, collecting money for numerous projects and 620.000¥ as epidemic relief effort during the coronavirus period, that started in December 2019. 

This group also became a source of controversy in later months. It seems some people will never be satisfied, no matter what we do. 

Support 

However, people did realize (I think) that most of his fans gives him support silently. There are of course fervent people who jump to defend him, but that kind of behaviour is discouraged by XZ’s studio (what I said in this post that ignoring the antis is the greatest way to defeat them). 

When seeing those comments and false rumours from the antis, fans tried to contribute posting positive things they had seen XZ doing or remembering his gestures with the people around him. Even people who weren’t his fans, also supported him. For example, a lawyer analysed the incident and declared that the fanfic had indeed violated Chinese laws (for damaging his reputation). 

(However, there is an opinion that I agree more with: not liking a content doesn’t give you the right to manage it. That’s the responsibility, the duty and the right of the platform that hosts it. If you find a content unsuitable for that platform, you can report it to the platform and they’ll take it down if it’s indeed unsuitable. But to report it to the authorities seems overdoing it for me). 

And now, no matter how important it’s the support from his fans, fact remains that his fans are people who don’t know him personally. Fans only get to see his public persona. 

So it was extremely important and a very good sign that people from inside the industry expressed their support. 

People he had worked with (actresses, actor, directors) posted comments praising him or expressing their dismay for his situation. One of them praised him in a direct livestream. Later in May, a screenwriter and director also posted a bewildered comment of why he was being attacked like that (to name a couple of cases). 

I think that this was essential to his “recovery”. It’s a true give away of XZ’s character that well-known people step up and speak for him, especially if we take into consideration that they are facing a group of unreasonable antis and a very competitive industry, where one down it’s one less to compete with. 

(For transparency reasons: some of them would actually be benefited if XZ’s reputation is recovered, like his coworkers from OOL. This is also a dangerous move, because it may turn the antis’ attention on them. But it’s also true that there were people who were “neutral” to this: supporting XZ didn’t bring them any benefit in the short term). 

It was also a good sign that while brands still avoided his image, tv programs didn’t shy away from his image. Happy Camp emitted a video in which XZ appeared, so fans interpreted this as a sign of silent support from the program and the tv channel.  

This was also very important. There have been cases before, when an actor was being seriously criticized by the public, that tv stations refused to work with him. In the case that an episode had already been filmed, they used photoshop to erase his image and simply cut the episode so all of his interventions and interactions with other participants were deleted.

(To those who are curious, this man had been a very successful actor for many years. He’d been “happily” married and has a 20 years old son. But when it was revealed that he had been keeping a mistress for two decades, he fell out of public favor. Quick.)

We are talking here about a week’s time. The episode was filmed on Friday and due to be aired next Friday. His affair was found out that week. In less than a day, the post-production team successfully deleted his every trace in the episode. So, if they believe it necessary, they can be very resolute and decisive). 

So if an actor has really committed a mistake, the entertainment circle will not hesitate to take away their support. It’s also a way to say that they disapprove of what that person did. 

XZ’s very brief appearance in Happy Camp was an auspicious sign for his future, meaning that he will work again in the industry since tv stations don’t refuse to work with his image, and that his dramas will likely be aired in spite of everything (I’ve never been happier to be wrong, since I thought this would take longer to pass).

It was also positive that in spite of everything, the sales of the products he endorses remained high and in the lead, in March, and the trend continued all the way to July.

4:55PM Okkkk, I’m going to be real with you.

I had a lot of clever ways to open this conversation but I have forgotten them since sitting in my Ferrari having not 1, but 2 smokes. You ever feel like you’re chewing on your own teeth? No? Good, that means you haven’t smoked meth for the past 255 days. To be clear- Cobain, Lampwick & The Joke are all synonyms for a former co-worker. Although the same person, they’re sort of not #mentalhealthawareness. TLDR; the more evolved part of me really hopes this guy is just a mean, jaded fucking asshole because the alternative is that they’re deeply psychotic and likely the permanent kind. Both leave little hope for improvement but the former at least KNOWS that. KNOWS I know. I could do a whole bullet-point slideshow fucking presentation on the red flags I had been seductively blindfolded to through exploitation of deepest nature and a stubborn unwillingness to accept pain and anger & I just might. I might. I might need to! I processed most of it as it was happening, denial was a bitch though. If you come from a place of; neglect, abuse and chaos but decided to assess your damages rather than project them on to innocent and typically pretty wonderful people.. then you need to equip yourself. Even if you took the more outward approach, leaving everyone in your path as empty useless collateral damage.. you could benefit as well. Tell yourself 'I’m only self-improving to gain further access and a tighter hold of my victims’ It doesn’t matter. Educate yourself on the impact of trauma/abuse/upbringing. See what happens to you. @ me. 

5:53PM There’s a lot of Construction Boyz here tonight. They hit on me and I’m all like ‘omg I smoke crystal meth and I’m in an over-sized hoodie at work with obviously contrasting roots growing in.. you have no idea how much I needed this’ hahah. Still, it’s nothing quite like the validation I get from making humble jokes to myself in my neurotic head! Where was I? Oh yeah. The Joke; Lampdick. This motherfucker fucking pulls out a REAL LIFE meth pipe, Chief Leaf right there. Of course CL is through-n-through up to date and real time a best friend without judgement, so it doesn’t reflect on me, but I’ve been fighting tooth (lol) and nail against obvious (but not blatant) disapproval toward this endeavor with Joke.. (of course gaslit with remarks like ‘fuck the haters’ ‘you’re really going to care what they say’ ‘it isn’t their relationship’ .. you’re the hater.. they treat me with consistent respect so duh.. you’re absolutely fucking right-it’s ours-and it fucking sucks because you’re an abusive psychopath.. shove that isolation groundwork technique up your) ? No respect. To pull out a fucking meth pipe after:

Day 1 appreciating we had a different DOC (drug of choice) and agreeing that use needs to be controlled in the best harm reduction sense possible & I firmly disclosed that I am 100% in no fucking way ever going to be okay with anyone-ever smoking meth near/with me. I still barely forgive the fuckers that ever let me do it - and I know full God damn well it was my choice/fault/willing action. I barely forgave myself! For letting them let me! Or that I even let me let them do it! So. No. It was immediately made clear. Day 1.  

Throughout this treachery The Joke made here-and-there comments about like “pass it this way” and “why don’t you save me any” and other repulsively ignorant and juvenile comments and my stance toward the matter remained firm. Which he always met with “yeah I know! I’m obviously joking! I agree! I would never do that to you�� Like I was crazy for hardening my responses. Fucker, fucking fucker.

Seeing/hearing what I have vulnerably shared and experienced since the first day I made this choice (and I know not everyone who has/will make that choice is going to have MY experience. I’m not claiming that. I’m claiming ‘I don’t give a fuck what another person’s experience may be - I am not fucking here for it’ - ‘it’s a no from me dawg’ 

Knowing how desperately I am trying AND want AND try to want (some days it really do be like that) to stop smoking crystal. To end-all repair the damage it has done to myself, my relationships and my life. To prevent the inevitable damage that waits if I don’t. 

Not to mention all the attempts at ‘crazy making’ by exploiting my guilt and fear of potential harm: caused by crystal meth. ie; “you’re definitely sleep-stealing my keys and/or moving things because YOU’RE smoking crystal meth, and that shit is BAD bad + your traumatic childhood,’ (that he doesn’t give a fuck about unless using it against me in similar scenarios) ‘so come on. You can’t deny engaging in these behaviors, that I refuse tell you about. You meth-trauma black events out.. you’re not conscious of it because of YOUR big bad drug.” (which it is and I don’t intend to downplay it)

Seriously. These are real events & that’s just scratching the fucking surface. Note: this blog intentionally has NO followers and is ran anonymously. My intention is only to self-vindicate the man made madness I've enabled. Yet STILL it manages to drag into a month and a half of my God damn precious and OBVIOUSLY seriously fucking sensitive time. I feel NO shame for that; for struggling right now. For falling the fuck on my ass/face/faceassfuckhands onto a SERIOUSLY cemented floor! that manages to also be falling upwards into my fucking face! So instead of ceasing upon impact; continuously bashing my fucking FACE in. It fucking happens man. I fucking know that and I fucking own it as shamelessly as is safe to. Not as a way to justify where I am right now - but to foster a belief that I am worth the insidiously meticulous effort that's required to be better. In a better position to improve the quality of how I serve myself and thus actually beginning to serve those around me. Jesus shit what a Joke. I can’t believe I let myself: be treated this way, be ignorant to it, be willing to entertain the idea that maybe it was OK (even warranted).. but between you and me: I find it even harder to believe that another human being - one who has clearly been deeply wounded as well - can see the genuine sincerity of another human being’s soul and heart.. compulsively bleeding from a profundity raw enough to captivate a nihilist.. and humbly exposes it.. with nothing but purity in the regard of inherit human good.. and could intentionally stick their dirty fucking arms vigorously inside and tear at the exposed gauge made faithfully available. I’m not innocent here. But there’s no blood on my hands. I won’t point my fingers but my eyes are staring right at you. I know what you did to me. I did not agree to it. I agreed to taking the risk. Do you know what you did to me? Educate yourself. Wash your fucking hands. 

I didn’t bring any crystal to Budapest today. I didn’t know I was going to begin opening this, or I would have.

7:55PM I don’t know wtf but Doug offered me to get stoned and so I did outside but the guys who needed to switch rooms came back and then outside too because they insisted on my break.. Golf was looking for tape and offered me a Tim Horton’s, I said hot chocolate. Then Striped Vest guy also forever chatted and offered me a Tim Horton’s; I said hot chocolate. Still no tape and I tell him about Striped Vest and hot chocolate. He says ok. Meanwhile, Doug and his friend Chevy Lover are shooting the shit too and Doug asked for my number. Well first he asked if I was single. He asked if I was dating anybody LOL first of all I’m stoned and second of all the literal words out of my mouth were ‘everybody’ sincerely believing it as a reflection of my innocent love for life and immediately realizing that was a stupid answer so on reflex I said “no, myself. ha ha no. nobody. nope. that’s a. this guy who was my boyfriend died once. like a long time ago. no. weird. yeah it was wicked. wait what? why? but no. I don’t. not.” and I’ll never forget that or this hot chocolate. 

8:03PM Golf asked me to put his poppy on (dude you’re 51, you’ve definitely done this more than me and I HATE war) so I asked him like, when the war was and what it was called - “Oh no, I don’t know a lot about history” meanwhile a second ago he was like “I guess I should put one on because my Grandpa fought in the war” no that was you. anyways so I’m learning about WW1. You say you remember so much, name 5 of our veterans? #therealneverforget

Taylor, I hope it is alright to address you so informally. I wanted to introduce myself to you. Not because I feel like we should be friends, or because I have anything to offer you at all really…other than my unyielding and unequivocal admiration and devotion to you as an artist and role model for myself and my daughter. I know that sounds like something a crazy person says right before they break into your dressing room to steal your panties or before they attempt to kidnap you or something…but I swear my intentions are not in any way nefarious. I just…love you. I love the human being you are. I love your songwriting, I love your humor and I love the role model you are for young people everywhere. I love your awkwardness and your total embrace of that. I love your Philanthropy…I want you to know exactly what you mean to me and why. Flash back to 2008. My daughter Savannah is approaching 1 year old. My father passed away just before she was born. I was a “Daddy’s girl” in my very core, and losing him was devastating to me. Savannah’s father and I had just ended our 3 years relationship and I was sad, angry and felt so alone. I only wanted to listen to angry rock and roll songs. I wanted to listen to music that perpetuated the misery I was holding on to.  I was trying so hard not to show my inner turmoil on the outside to the best of my ability. I had a baby. A little daughter to think about. A precious girl who I never wanted to feel any pain or sadness. I could only show her love and warmth. Music was all I really had to make me feel better when I was hiding my pain from everyone else. I heard “Love Story” on the radio one day. I had deviated from my normal stations because of commercials. I heard your sugary sweet Love Story and if we are being 100% honest – I hated it. I hated it because it was contrary to every single thing I felt was real and true in the world. Love doesn’t exist. Everyone leaves. Everyone dies. Fairy tales are for fools and only fools fall in love. I didn’t have time for the foolishness... But I listened anyway. And then again. Every time I would hear this stupid sweet melody, I would soften just a little bit more. I couldn’t help myself. Until the day came when I was sitting in my car at the gas station, waiting in line – absentmindedly singing along until I got to the final verse. You know the one, of course – you wrote it. When the boy goes to the girl, tells her he asked her father for her hand and he wants her to say yes. And a lump formed in my throat. I croaked out the last few lines, trying not to cry. WHAT IS THIS NONSENSE?! I asked myself. “Sarah, you know full well you don’t believe in any of this and I won’t have you singing along to tweeny little love songs when you are supposed to be hardened and cold.” I don’t really know. I don’t know, but I am certain it won’t happen again. I cannot let ANYONE know about this. Then a few months later…You Belong with Me came on. I couldn’t believe it. I had the same reaction! It is not even that I felt like I identified with the characters in these songs in any particular way. I was a miserable rebellious angry teenager. I think it was just the idea of it all. I felt like the way you could tell a lyrical story was beautiful and when I found out that you wrote them yourself and had been doing so since you were just a little girl…well, it just put me in awe of you. That you wrote your truth out in this way at such a young age. This storytelling that even resonated with ME, when I thought that part of me was dead and lost forever. I just thought it was so lovely. I remember telling my best friend at the time how listening to your music made me feel. She laughed at me and rolled her eyes. She certainly wasn’t into your silly love songs. I felt like loving your music was some kind of guilty pleasure I had to enjoy while alone because nobody else got it. Then…somehow every song you released gave me the same kinds of feelings. I loved everything I heard. Our Song, Fearless, Mine, Speak Now, Red, We are Never Getting Back Together… We can flash forward again to 2014. I was in a much better place in my life. I had been through some really tough hardships. I had another baby, and gave him up for adoption. Savannah and I had to move in with my mother and I tried going to a tech school for a fast-track career. That did not work out so well, and I ultimately got a job in a Call Center. I have been there at that very same call center now for 7 years! I moved my daughter and I out of my mother’s house and into a brand new house in a brand new neighborhood and my life was back on track again! I had two more failed relationships – one of them with a kind  man who was just terribly boring and the other with a super fun and exciting, but totally infuriating manchild who will never in his life learn how to be a REAL man. These relationships did so much for me in that they helped me understand myself better. And I had you there, singing me through them both. I was still jaded and cynical about love and relationships…but I tried to stay wearily optimistic. When 1989 was released and you announced you were transitioning to “Pop” from “Country”. I felt this was, of course, the natural progression of your career and I was SO FOR IT. I recall sitting on the front porch of my house with my best friend at the time and hearing her tell me how stupid and shitty you were for alienating all of your fans with this career choice and “rebranding”. How selfish you were. I argued with her for the better part of an hour about it. About how she didn’t even know what she was talking about – why on earth SHOULDN’T you be able to decide what YOU want your art to represent? Why shouldn’t you be allowed to just fucking LIVE and do what you want to make you happy in your life and in your career? I could not talk reason into her. She never liked you anyway, she said. Good riddance then, I thought. I didn’t even realize I was missing you so badly, until I heard “Shake it Off” on the radio. Oh gosh, I will never forget the first time I heard it. I was driving down the road, headed home from work when it came on. I had never heard you sound like that! I LOVED it. It made me feel so good and I decided right then and there that I would absolutely apply this to my life. You were so right! Haters, players and fakers will never do anything but that what they are designed to do and I cannot allow them to bring me down. Of course, some people and words are harder to brush off than others. But whenever I faced a situation that I could not control with a person I could not control – I just rolled my eyes and shook it off. Or maybe I would cry about it a bit first and then shake it off. But either way, I stopped letting myself get involved in drama that I never asked to be a part of to begin with. Then there was Blank Space. GENIUS. Pure genius. I knew right away what you were doing. I laughed AND cried when I heard this one. I couldn’t believe that you were so brilliant that you could write this song taking everything those nasty people in the world though and said about you and made it into this fun melody that my daughter and I had memorized almost immediately. Okay – thank you for bearing with me to this point. This is the best part of my story – I promise. In late November, 2014 – I met a man. I met this man and I knew immediately that I just wanted to know him better – and everything had changed (see what I did there?). Being with him made me feel safer and more whole than I had ever felt in my entire life. Being with him felt like everything you had ever written about love was real and true. He had never even heard of you. He has no interest at all. I knew I had to do something about this. Savannah and I loved Blank Space so much – and Savannah has ALWAYS loved to perform. It is one of her favorite things. To be “Extra” we like to say. Savannah took to this man right away, and she wanted to “perform” Blank Space for him one night while we were all just hanging out together. She did and he seemed to be very pleased by it. I told him you wrote all of your own songs. He laughed at my naivety and countered that he didn’t believe it to be true. So I told him to look it up. I mean, I didn’t need any convincing – but he did and he got the information he was looking for. A new “Fan” was born. Not a super fan like myself…but a new person in the world who knew your name and respected what you do and, from time to time, would sing along with me to your songs. I felt so good about that. Eventually we moved in together and began our life as real partners. Team Raposa, we call ourselves. Supporting each other’s passions and dreams. He bought me your Deluxe Edition of 1989 and I listened to some of the songs often enough to be deemed “too often”… But he tolerated it anyway. One night, we had a silly fight. I have no idea what it was about. Not a clue. But eventually this man came to my side of the room and held me and kissed me and made it all better. I was crying like a fool. In the background I heard “You Are in Love”. I really HEARD it for the first time. You wrote that song for us. I just know you did. Coffee at midnight, fighting and talking…and this man…the first time he looked me in my eyes and told me I was his best friend…I just knew he was right and he was everything. I could hear it in the silence. I could see it with the lights out. I could feel it on the way home. I was totally, 100%, head over heels in love with my best friend. And you put that into words just for me. He surprised Savannah and I with tickets to your 1989 World Tour show in Tampa on Halloween. Savannah dressed up as a witch and we attended the show. I cried and screamed all the words along with the rest of the packed stadium. I couldn’t see you on stage, but the big screens were enough. I couldn’t even begin to describe how much I loved being there. You brought Alessia Cara on stage and I cried. You brought Idina Menzel on stage, and I cried. I was so happy that my best friend sent my daughter and I to her first concert – and it was YOU that we got to see together. I was transformed from a fan to a SUPERfan. I still to this day carry around the light up wrist band I got at that show in my purse. It doesn’t do anything. It is just in there. But when I go to rifle through – looking for my chap stick, or my pen or whatever I may need…I will grasp it in my hand for just a second without meaning to and I will instantly recall that trip and how it made me feel and it ALWAYS brings me a little bit of joy. I can’t bring myself to remove it from my bag. 2016 came and went with no new album, but plenty of gossip and drama. I was so frustrated with the media. I was frustrated with the state of the world and the country. I always felt better when I put on your music. It is 2017 now and the first half of the year was really just awful. A clown for a president…and My Love was hospitalized for months. I almost lost him. Then, finally, he came home. Shortly after that best friend became my HUSBAND. His name is Joe. He is my King. Savannah is 10 now, and growing faster and faster all the time. And FINALLY your music was back on Spotify. That was a WONDEFUL day. My husband is the one that told me. He is always looking out for me – trying to put a smile on my face. It worked. Then, 2 weeks ago your entire social media existence was stripped. I squealed with delight. I am a 32 year old wife and mother and I literally SQUEALED when I saw your social media gone because I knew that finally what I had been waiting for was going to happen. And then the snakes. Oh god the snakes. I have never been so happy to see snakes in my life. I knew what they represented. I knew something so fucking FUN was about to happen. My family and I made an agreement that we would all wake up together on Friday morning (8/25) and listen to your new song together. I could not wait. That morning my husband woke me up gently asking if I was ready to listen to it. He looked at me and asked if I wanted to know the title. I had been speculating with all of the internet for days. Of course, I thought the titled would be “Timeless”. When my husband looked at me and said “Look What You Made Me Do”…. Taylor, it sent a chill down my spine. My extremities went numb. I HAD to hear it. We listened and I was speechless. I recall Savannah trying to talk to me and all I could really do was giggle vaguely and try not to cry. Of course I immediately signed up for the TaylorTix and bought the album. And then watched the Lyric video at least 25 times. And have listened to the song since at least 70 times since. And then…then the music video dropped. I was BLOWN AWAY. I screamed and laughed. My daughter told me she is deaf now after sitting next to me while we watched it live on TV. I cannot wait for your album. I cannot wait to memorize every word and sing along in my car every day until you finally grace us all with TS7 and the cycle can begin again. @Community fans, I just thought of this while eating dinner, and it was too cool (at least, IMO) not to share. Have fun with it!

Okay, so, remember the brightest timeline from “Remedial Chaos Theory?” This episode made me wanna find a group of strangers to be a found family with and solidly cemented found family as my favorite trope in all of media

Well, obviously, the lesson to take away from that is that Jeff can (and does) often go overboard in shutting others down. Kinda like an anchor - he can tell the study group when to stop and reign them in, but sometimes he’s too intense and ends up dragging everyone down instead. 

Some people even jokingly say that this is the best timeline because Pierce doesn’t get to tell his Eartha Kitt story. And he even has the perfect segue to do so - whereas in the other timelines, Pierce has to kinda shoehorn the story in there, he doesn’t have to for this one because Troy literally says that Jeff sucks harder than an airplane bathroom. And yet he chooses not to tell the story! 

And while I believe that this timeline is the best because of those reasons, I also believe there’s one major player being overlooked: Britta.

Britta is a buzzkill. The show has established this (though personally, I don’t see it) continuously, ever since the season 1 episode “The Science of Illusion.” (leading to one of the most tragically funny lines in the entire series for me - “Knock knock! Who’s there, cancer? Oh, good, come on in, i ThoUGht iT wAS bRitTA”)

But a surprising thing to note is that the best timeline, this timeline, is the only one where Britta is allowed to be herself. Britta, the notorious buzzkill, actually starts the fun. Britta, who is constantly dunked on in the show for ruining things, is the one who lifts the group’s spirits. 

I guess one could take that to mean Britta is, actually, the heart of the show, to paraphrase from Jeff in “The Science of Illusion.” 

And this is what makes me so upset about the Britta haters in the fandom and the way her character was treated by others in the show. Britta brings so MUCH (the group was basically/indirectly formed because of her) but she still gets so dunked on by the rest of the group and a (significant minority) of the fandom. 

But I guess that’s also what I admire about Britta. Her determination. She gets hated on day after day after day (thanks for that, Dan Harmon & co.; look, I love the guy’s writing, but...like...he’s not perfect), but she still comes back, day after day after day, ready to love and wanting, at her core, to be a good person. She could have become so jaded and cynical after being constantly hated on, but she still wants to do right by her friends and be good. 

Britta has her flaws, sure, but people often forget that Britta brings a lot to the group because she’s low-hanging fruit to laugh at. And I think the fandom needs to hear this every once in a while: Britta is more than a flawed, hypocritical soapbox Sadie. Britta is a kickass role model, overcompensating for what she lacks with her heart. 

I know Britta would hate this comparison, but I’ve always felt that Britta is the Cinderella of Community - a kind and caring female badass trapped in a place that doesn’t (always) appreciate her worth, even though she’s making said place so much better. And “Remedial Chaos Theory” is a good reminder of that.

A snow storm out of nowhere

Part Two: March

In this post we continue to go through XZ’s situation, to better understand why he is where he is now. The ask that originated everything is here, with an index. 

Disclaimer: I try to keep the content objective, but I am biased, by the kind of content I’m usually exposed to and by my own perception of their situation. I may be wrong, and language barriers and cultural differences have to be taken into account. If anyone wants to discuss this, please make sure you have enough information to do so.

I think that even with all the “darkness” this post has, it express also quite nicely why I think XZ won’t be defeated by this. We will see him again, let’s be patient. 

So, taking from Part One, the next day public thought that XZ’s Studio and his team were trying to hush all the commotion. People were very very furious, looking for a way to vent their anger. Some said that the only way they’d let this go was that XZ retired from the entertainment industry.

Attacking his endorsements

That night, Olay was to air a live video with a product that XZ was going to endorse, and antis realized that they had a new way to express their anger. The comments and their interventions during the event made it impossible to progress adequately, and the announcement of XZ endorsing the product had to be put off.

Antis and haters realized the power they had, and started to announce that didn’t just reject the products endorsed by XZ, they also rejected the brands that worked with him. In the face of such controversy and boycott, many brands chose another spoke person temporarily for their commercials and banners, removing XZ’s from their websites.

From March, the antis centered themselves around the topic “Not buying products XZ endorses”, making his value go downwards. The brands he worked with decided to stay low for the time being and removed his image from their websites. Some even decided to terminate their contracts with him, in fear of being boycotted.

Douban

By the 3rd day ao3 was down, reality sank in and people turned to douban, were C/QL, The Joy of Life, Jade Dynasty were in the top 3, all of them series were XZ is lead actor or secondary actor. The antis placed bad reviews, to the point of bringing down the score of C/QL from 8’5 to 7’9 in a single day (we’re talking here of 1′5 million reviews as of today) and affecting every project he has worked on since the beginning of his career as an actor.

Public scorn

XZ as well as XZ fans became the objective of public scorn. From the 1st of March, some of the accusers apologized for “the problems caused”, and the one that had led the report posted a public apology and deleted every post related to the reporting. However, to the rest of the users it looked like they were apologizing against their will, and that they still thought they weren’t wrong, but were doing so in an effort to preserve XZ’s public image, as well as their own image as XZ’s fans.

The conflict ceased between XZ’s fans and the cp fans, now uniting in an effort to lesser the damage. They agreed to bring down the tone of the discussion, and once things cooled down a bit, XZ Studio posted a public apology, asking people to support their idol rationally, to speak and act carefully, as well as saying that XZ was currently quarantined at home.

Antis brought up more complaints about XZ’s fans. Unfortunately, it’s a fact that some of his fans had taken sometimes unreasonable measures to give him the spotlight, such as:

Making him the center of attention in a tv drama in which another actor was the male lead. They took over the community in w/ibo and started to delete all of the other actor’s fans from the group.

Some fans attacked WYB, so XZ wouldn’t have to “divide” his success from C/QL with him. They reported WYB for not having a “host degree” (whatever that is). This was shot down by a statement from Hunan TV, by the way.

Attacking whoever says that they don’t have any interest in XZ’s works (a professor was asked to have a look at his works, and he refused, so XZ’s stans started to attack him).

(Again, bear in mind that antis and hater and these kind of very obssesive fans are a minority, and they are greatly outnumbered by the rest of the people that like and support XZ in a much more rational way... but they make more noise, so to say). 

Antis and people resenting XZ for the 2/27 incident wanted a scapegoat. So I think the resentful party wants the fans to know “so you take away this, I want your idol to pay for it” and antis… they have their own agenda, and that’s for another post. 

XZ Studio’s apology didn’t do much and the drama continued to unfold. Maybe XZ’s Studio wanted to wait for the storm to pass, and since acknowledging the issue would give it importance, they waited until they couldn’t put it off anymore. I don’t know if this was actually right or wrong, but people weren’t satisfied with this apology. XZ’s fans would try to argue with the antis, and thus keeping the image of obsessive fans, even if many of them were actually right.

People were disappointed by the actions taken by his team and waiting for him to say something, but, to their disappointment, XZ didn’t express his opinion. 

Other authors

Fanfiction writers, mostly from the BJYX fandom, would receive insults and attacks from antis and XZ’s stans still pursuing their original stance, so a lot of content has disappeared. 

(To this point: I don’t like RPS. I don’t read RPS fanfics. I didn’t like seeing them and adjusted the filters in ao3 so I could only see fanfics from CQL. But attacking the authors this way is also terribly wrong).

Responsibility and consequences 

XZ had previously signed up with many companies, with WJJW being the main stockholder. Since he was under so many companies, none of them wanted to take responsibility of the matter and try to solve it, so it was left to XZ’s Studio to try and fix it.  

Investors, directors, brands’ representatives... they all thought that it’d take at least half a year for XZ to recover from this blow, and it also depends greatly on how his next work is received by the general public. He still has the support from his fans, but that alone wasn’t enough in the face of such boycott.

While later people who supported him appeared, there were voices at first too that asked him to take responsibility. 

(These are influential people, and, while I’m not surprised that their stance was to support public opinion, as a public figure, you may find yourself in the future in the same position as XZ. To add oil to flames doesn’t seem very kind to me, but again, this is a competitive industry.) 

Support 

At the same time people criticized him and his studio for his management of the issue, prominent people stepped forward and talked in his behalf, like critics, directors, and even lawyers, talking about the legal aspect of the fanfiction, saying that, by Chinese laws, it was indeed violating the law.

(However, there was another article I agreed more with: not liking a content doesn’t give you the right to manage it. That’s the duty and right of the platform, in this case ao3. You may report the author and the work if you find it unsuitable for the platform, but to call the authorities on them is quite excessive). 

It was also positive that in spite of everything, the sales of the products he endorsed remained high and in the lead in March, and the trend continued all the way to July. He’s still considered one of the most influential celebrities, taking usually the top 1. This is why his companies, agencies and his team hasn’t given up on him. As sad as it may sound, if he’s a profitable asset, they won’t give up on him, because he can still earn money for them. 

Since the antis were spreading hate, rumours and false news, trying to damage XZ’s image, the fans also tried for the contrary. They posted about XZ’s kindness and polite gestures, to try to counter the antis’ attacks. 

However, no matter how much his fans support him, the greatest help came from fellow acquaintances, coworkers and friends from the entertainment industry. It’s a reality that no matter how much a fan likes their idol, the average fan doesn’t know him personally. But that can’t be said of people who have worked with him. 

People he had worked with (fellow actresses, critics, directors, screenwriters) supported him by posting comments defending and praising him, expressing their dismay about the antis or by praising him in livestream. For well-known people to step up and speak for him, when they could have stayed silent in fear of retaliation, it’s a true give away of XZ’s character and what these people think of his future, especially if we consider that they are facing a group of unreasonable antis.

(In fact, many of the people who supported him received hateful comments and were attacked for supporting him, but none of them took away their support, that I know of). 

Happy Camp’s support

It was also a good sign that while brands still avoided his image, tv programs didn’t shy away from his image. Happy Camp emitted a video in which XZ appeared, so fans interpreted this as a sign of silent support from the program and the tv channel.  

This was also very important. There have been cases before, when an actor was being seriously boycotted because he had been having an affair, that the tv stations refused to work with him. It got to the point that, when a episode had already been filmed, they used photoshop to erase his image and simply cut out all of his interventions and interactions with other participants .

See that space there, between the girl in blue and the guy with a suit? Such are the miracles of photoshop.

So if an actor has really committed a mistake, the entertainment industry will not hesitate to take away their support. It’s also a way to say that they disapprove of what that person did. 

(To those who are curious, this man had been a very successful actor for many years. He was “happily” married and had a 20 years old son. But when people discovered that he had been keeping a mistress for almost two decades... he fell out of favor. Quick.)

XZ’s very brief appearance in Happy Camp was an auspicious sign for his future, meaning that tv stations are still willing to work with him and that his dramas will likely be aired in spite of everything. 

(I’ve never been happier to wrong, since I thought this would take longer to pass at first. But when I thought about this carefully, I realized that anyone could see that XZ in himself isn’t at fault for what happened, so why would they reject him once the storm passes?).

The start of the public welfare project 

So, in the midst of this situation, which was very serious at the time, XZ’s fans Public Welfare Group was founded, with the support of XZ’s Studio. 

(This is actually quite common in China. A group of fans create a welfare group, and they do volunteering projects and others in the name of their idol. Many celebrities’ fans create a group like this when the fandom is big enough.)

I think it served to remind that idols can use their influence and unite a large group of people to serve purposes that are beneficial to the society (at least in Asia). It came in a “good” moment, because if nothing else, XZ can’t afford that the first that comes to mind to the general public when they see him or his fans is this small group of people, who are the representation of the worst part of his fans.

(Since this project has the support of his studio, he must know of it and must have given his approval. But he is not the one to actually initiate the project, that was a collective effort from his fans: to do welfare projects in his name. He collaborates with welfare projects, he had done it before, and did it again in June. This a reflection of a more positive part of fan quan culture, which will be explained in the next post).

However, because he was in the middle of great controversy and criticism, this move was also considered “hypocritical” and “insincere” by the antis. Nonetheless, the influence such a large group of people have is undeniable (in promoting local commerce in this case), and the local representatives thanked them for their support. They kept on with their projects these months, usually promoting agricultural products from impoverished provinces. They were also praised by the media for the results they achieved.

For those who are inclined to doubt whether this was a move to improve his image, here it’s a compilation of charity and public welfare projects that XZ’s fans pushed forward in 2019, collecting for numerous projects an amount of almost 450.000¥ and 620.000¥ as epidemic relief effort during the coronavirus period, that started in December 2019.

The welfare project was also a source of controversy later... but again, people always seem to find fault with everything you do.
