#Repost @glenn_adamson with @make_repost ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 ・・・ Works by Jacqueline Surdell: 1) Untitled Noir series 2) Reliquary #7 Well described by her gallery @devening_projects as a “rope tying phenomenon,” Surdell is based in Chicago and studied at the Art Institute there. She’s clearly drawing on the legacy of fiber art - I think of Lenore Tawney and Claire Zeisler, two other artists with Chicago connections - but she approaches her compositions in a free painterly manner, which feels very much of the moment. Her current exhibition Score! is on through June 25. @jacquelinesurdell #jacquelinesurdell (at Devening Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd8nyBCLlyc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thanks so much for your thoughtful Qs and insights, Emma💜 @thedesigneditmagazine • #Repost @librarystreetcollective with @make_repost ・・・ In a new article, @TheDesignEditMagazine spoke with artist @JacquelineSurdell about her latest works for 𝘼𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙮, a two-person exhibition with @Robert_William_Moreland that is currently on view at the gallery through May 4, 2022. Tap the link in bio to read the full article!⠀ ⠀ Says Surdell: "All these new works are primary colors and primary shapes: that was an arbitrary rule that I made for myself, as I wanted to see what I could do within that sphere. Sport always teaches you 'What are the rules and what are the ways in which you can work with them.' I’ve always found it really creative and interesting, how the different coaches and players engage with those rules and constructs."⠀ ⠀ #JacquelineSurdell #LibraryStreetCollective⠀ ——⠀ Jacqueline Surdell, "Not one but not two either (red)," 2022. #Repost @librarystreetcollective with @make_repost ・・・ 𝘼𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙮, a two-person exhibition featuring the work of @Robert_William_Moreland and @JacquelineSurdell, opens tonight, March 12, 2022. Join us at Library Street Collective for an opening reception from 6-8 pm! ⠀ 𝘼𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙮 highlights the labor-intensive artistic processes of Robert Moreland and Jacqueline Surdell’s bodies of work, however the results of each artists’ grueling tasks exist on opposite ends of a visual spectrum: Moreland’s simplistic and Surdell’s complex. Through the weaving of ropes and cords, Surdell manipulates textiles to create powerful forms that seemingly defy gravity as the final product’s existence appears weightless against the gallery’s stark white walls. Shifting over to Moreland, the artist embraces a tedious technique of stretching canvases and fastening leather hinges to yield a simplistic configuration, the process often taking days to complete. He focuses on the relationships between color, shape, and form to create an illusion of creasing fabrics and stacks; after layering color onto the multi-paneled canvases, Moreland’s paintings visually and physically protrude off the wall. ⠀ ⠀ Learn more at the link in bio!⠀ ⠀ #RobertMoreland #JacquelineSurdell #LibraryStreetCollective #openingtonight (at Library Street Collective) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbA1kDGF9zT/?utm_medium=tumblr

Saturday 🙏🏻❤️🔥 ~ so looking forward to being back in the D‼️❤️🔥hope to see y’all there😝❤️🔥 • #Repost @librarystreetcollective with @make_repost ・・・ Chicago-native @JacquelineSurdell’s textile sculptures are incredibly labor-intensive. While also utilizing foundational elements of repetition, color, and shape, she’s questioning what can be created with a focus on those formal elements. Surdell’s work is situated within a foundation of her interest in sacred spaces. The similarity between the architecture of bathhouses and the gallery influences Surdell’s thoughts relating to the connection of grids, designed into physical spaces and the creation of cloth, through the process of crossing threads. Although abandoning traditional linear networks, Surdell highlights established textile creation techniques; the complexity of the work folding in on itself through her manipulation. ⠀ ⠀ Look for Surdell's work in a two-person exhibition with @Robert_William_Moreland opening this Saturday, March 12th at Library Street Collective from 6-8 pm. 𝘼𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙮 creates a brilliant synergy between two new bodies of work that appear radically different but relate in universally complementary ways.⠀ ⠀ #JacquelineSurdell #RobertMoreland #LibraryStreetCollective #UpcomingExhibition⠀ ——⠀ Jacqueline Surdell, "Earth Licker," 2022. Stoked to be showing new work with @librarystreetcollective & @robert_william_moreland ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 Repost @librarystreetcollective with @make_repost ・・・ Library Street Collective is pleased to announce 𝘼𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙮, a two-person exhibition featuring the work of @Robert_William_Moreland and @JacquelineSurdell, opening March 12, 2022. 𝘼𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙮 creates a brilliant synergy between two new bodies of work that appear radically different, but relate in universally complementary ways.⠀ ⠀ The color and dimensionality of the included artworks form a contrast to the stark white walls, adding physical depth to the planar space, and speaking to one another through conceptually nuanced language. Although the exhibition highlights aesthetic diversity, there is a continuity of manual labor that unites the works through processes. The dichotomy of the visual aspects is opposed by the formulaic use of color and the physical exertion needed to produce the works.⠀ ⠀ #RobertMoreland #JacquelineSurdell #LibraryStreetCollective #upcomingexhibition (at Chicago Downtown) https://www.instagram.com/p/CaPmg4Qlo3T/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Repost @librarystreetcollective with @make_repost ❤️🔥😈👁 ・・・ Chicago-based artist @JacquelineSurdell approaches her studio practice with the meticulous precision of craft and the unbridled spontaneity of contemporary painting. She reimagines the woven canvas as a space of undulation and growth. As the expanded histories of painting materialize in her work as content, simultaneously, swollen tendrils and textures of bound rope deny illusions of the classically painted picture plane. The works actively work to bridge the division between painting and sculpture. In this way, her work calls into association other binary categorizations such as rigid and collapsed, construction techniques coded as masculine or feminine, and ontological spaces between body and sculpture. Her energetic and materially grounded practice brings to attention the tools, environments, and actions that contain and display performances of labor, history, and power. ⠀⠀ ⠀ Stay tuned for more details on an upcoming exhibition with the artist this spring. ✨⠀⠀ ⠀ #JacquelineSurdell #LibraryStreetCollective (at Chicago Downtown) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZNTSagFZnw/?utm_medium=tumblr

#Repost @librarystreetcollective with @make_repost ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ "My practice is concerned with hybrid forms of making and seeks to elevate painting through the consciousness of craft. Each tapestry considers the construction of identity—tiny movements, conversations, experiences—knotted together to create a whole. The combination of tapestry weaving, macrame, painting techniques, and the occasional found object, results in materially grounded practice that speaks to second and third wave feminist theory; a critical framework to probe defined roles, perceived understandings, and convention-based tropes ascribed to people and objects of the current day." ⠀ — @JacquelineSurdell⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ #JacquelineSurdell #LibraryStreetCollective⠀⠀ ——⠀ Images: Jacqueline Surdell, "Straight-laced: The Consummation of Empire (after Thomas Cole)," 2021.
