Little Fish (2005) Full Film

An Australian film directed by Rowan Woods and written by Jacquelin Perske. It was filmed in and around Sydney, in Cabramatta and in Fairfield. The film was developed and produced by Vincent Sheehan and Liz Watts of Porchlight Films, with Cate Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton's production company Dirty Films receiving an Associate Producer credit. Tracy Heart is a former heroin addict who is desperately trying to escape her past and achieve her goals and dreams. Tracy lives with her mother and brother Ray in the suburb of Cabramatta, Sydney, where heroin is readily available. She is in need of money to become a partner in the video store that she works in, but her loan applications are repeatedly rejected by finance providers, as a result of her past criminal record, poor repayments of credit card debt, history of drug use and lack of collateral. Tracy lies to both her mother and her boss at the video store, pretending she has received the loan. The casual ways people lie to each other for convenience is one of the recurring themes of the movie. Tracy is trying to help her drug addicted stepfather and former National Rugby League star Lionel Dawson to kick his heroin addiction. After a four-year absence in Vancouver, her former boyfriend Jonny Nguyen, also a former heroin addict, has come back into her life. Jonny, who now dresses in business suits, claims to have employment as a stockbroker at a large firm and suggests he may be able to obtain the money Tracy desires through share trading. The romance between Tracy and Jonny is rekindled. Upon visiting Jonny's alleged workplace, Tracy discovers Jonny has lied to her and is not in fact employed as a stockbroker. Jonny has become involved in a drug deal with her brother Ray, and Tracy also chooses to become involved in the deal as she sees this as the only means of providing the finance she needs to become a partner in the video store. Tracy, Ray, and Jonny set out to execute the deal, which ends in tragedy. Tracy's courage and deep love for those she cares about are notable in the climactic scenes of the film. For the occasion, I thought I would highlight a few quotes from Jenna:

“There are so many pressures on women,” she continues, “to feel that motherhood is the most wonderful thing in the world and it is, absolutely, it’s precious and it’s beautiful, but that really doesn’t mean you can’t have these other things in your life and I think everyone needs to be a little bit more forgiving of mothers who don’t feel guilty for wanting a bit of independence still… I think we all seem to have so many standards on how it’s supposed to be and I think it’s toxic really.”

In fact, Coleman has been thinking a lot about women lately – not just mothers, but about how we all find our place in a world where gender dynamics have been shifting under our feet. The rise of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement in the wake of the scandal surrounding the disgraced movie mogul, Harvey Weinstein, has been “amazing… but I think the only way for that to really have impact is for those conversations to keep happening and those facts to keep on surfacing and just keep on going with it… It’s definitely made me feel less apologetic for myself.”

In what way did she feel she had to apologise? Coleman blinks slowly and tilts her face downwards. “I think sometimes over the past couple of years, because I was young and female, there was definitely a feeling like I perhaps didn’t have as much right to an opinion.”

Over the years, Jenna has taken a keen interest in playing parts that are definitely not the stereotypical roles for women. And she has supported female authors, who are still underrepresented in the acting industry. Victoria is written by Daisy Goodwin.

Anoche se produjo la primera “batalla” de la temporada entre Antena 3 y Telecinco con el estreno de dos series. La cadena de Atresmedia eligió una producción suya que ya habíamos visto en Amazon, ‘Pequeñas coincidencias‘, mientras que la de Mediaset decidió estrenar ‘The Cry’, una producción de BBC. El resultado fue que la propuesta de Javier Veiga ganó a la de Jacquelin Perske.

Basada en la novela de Helen Fitgerald, ‘The Cry’ es una miniserie de cuatro episodios rodada en su mayor parte en Australia y que se convirtió en el gran éxito de BBC del pasado otoño. Tanto que incluso era la serie que había que ver después ‘Bodyguard‘, lo que es probablemente su mayor éxito de 2018.

Jenna Coleman (‘Doctor Who‘, ‘Victoria‘) interpreta a Joanna, una mujer que acaba de tener un hijo con Alistair (Ewen Leslie) y le cuesta mucho adaptarse a su nueva vida, a la maternidad y a saber calmar a su recién nacido. Claro, que el prometido ayuda solo a ratos. Mientras viaja a Australia para visitar a la familia y, de paso, luchar por la custodia de la hija de Alistair, el niño desaparece.

Un huracán emocional

Todo esto se nos presenta como un huracán emocional, con continuos cortes que nos lleva por distintas épocas: una visita de Joanna a la psicóloga, un juicio criminal en la que ella parece la principal acusada, un flashback sobre cómo comenzó la relación entre los protagonistas y qué pasó en Australia.

Así, este aparente thriller de desaparición se convierte en algo mucho más doméstico, mucho más emocional. Sí, tenemos la clásica investigación en el que, por supuesto, los padres terminan siendo sospechosos. Vemos una lucha por mantener el relato, por mantener la imagen pública, por no desmoronarse…

Y en ese aspecto más emocional es donde mejor juega ‘The Cry’, Jenna Coleman interpreta de una manera soberbia a una mujer con depresión postparto. Y realiza un relato honesto de una chica que ha dado a luz y se enfrenta a ello. Glendyn Ivyn, su director, pensaba que estaba exagerando con el tratamiento de Jo:

“Pensaba que estaba haciendo una historia sobre una mujer luchando con la depresión postparto y, quizá, con alguna otra psicosis sin diagnosticar. (…) Muchas mujeres lo han visto y me han dicho que así es como es. Que nunca han visto a una nueva madre representada con tanta honestidad. Pensé que yo estaba exagerando.”

Es un retrato honesto e incluso incómodo de ver, con Joanna tratando por todos los medios seguir adelante. Y ya no hablo del síndrome mencionado, sino también de la exposición a las redes sociales viendo las opiniones de todos aquellos que siguen (y buscan conspiraciones) el caso.

Si hay algo que falla en este thriller doméstico es el cómo equilibra los elementos. Yo, personalmente, he sentido que al poner tanto peso en el personaje de Coleman han descuidado el desarrollo de la investigación. Hasta que no se descubre qué ha pasado, estamos con un whodonit que no logra ser demasiado intrigante en pantalla.

‘The Cry’ es una miniserie honesta y emocional, narrada como si estuviésemos en la mente de Joanna, vagando entre pasado, presente y futuro juntando lo actual con recuerdos continuamente en una miniserie que nos lleva por donde quiere.

Spirited Receives Three AWGIE Nominations

The Australian Writer's Guild nominations for the 45th AWGIE Awards were revealed today.

Congratulations to our magnificent team of Spirited writers for receiving three out of the four nominations in the Television - Series category for their work on this amazing show.

Here's hoping that those odds help us bring home the award in August!
