HAS ANYBODY ON THIS PLANET READ THE SECRETS IN MY SCOWL BY A.E. VIA BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN AND CANNOT FIND ANYTHING ON ANYONE TALKING ABOUT IT AND I NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE ABOUT THIS THERES SO MUCH EMOTION HERE THAT I DIDNT EXPECT WHEN GOING IN
And if you haven’t you really should bc it’s a queer story of a family law/divorce lawyer and the wedding planner that moves into his business’ building. It’s a wonderful brooding x sunshine pairing imo

The mystery of LeRoy Foster: African American artist
African American artist Julie Mehretu was talking to a gathering of high school students in one of the several galleries of Detroit Institute of Art devoted to her gigantic "City Sitings" canvases. (It was during the opening week media preview.)
As I listened to her talk to the students I observed from her look and forthright manner that she might be "family", so when the students left I introduced myself, said I liked her work, and asked her how long one of her gigantic canvases might take to finish.
She said it took her and her assistants usually six months to complete a canvas. I then said I was from Between The Lines, that it would be nice to interview her. She told me to wait 'til after Thanksgiving, then asked me if I saw any of the community touches in her paintings.
When I said I hadn't, she led me to Stadia III and pointed out several tiny pink triangles. It was a pleasant and pleasing subliminal touch. There, but not too obvious. A visual "only if you ask, I'll tell," otherwise a visual nuance overlooked by the average straight museum visitor. Moving along to other gallery spaces devoted to African American artists I found brilliantly lighted works by greats like Benny Andrews, Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Hughie Lee-Smith. Locally there were stunning pieces by Tyree Guydon, Charles McGee, Gilda Snowden, and Alvin Loving (a fellow Cass Technical High School art student).
As I took in the variety and richness of the offerings I realized that the work of someone important was missing from the collections. LeRoy Foster. There was not one picture or print by this Detroit artist, who during the late-40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s was one of the city's most well-known black artists. Foster, who was born in 1925, studied art at Cass Technical High School, the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts School (now the College of Creative Studies), and continued his studies in Europe at L'Academie de la Grand Chaumeire in Paris and London's Heatherly School of Art.
A fine portrait painter (with many European clients) he was most well known in Detroit for public mural commissions, including "The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass" for the Frederick Douglass Branch of the Detroit Public Library; "Kaleidoscope" for the lobby of Southwest Detroit Hospital, and "Renaissance City," at the old Cass Tech (where in 1986 the picture was vandalized by ink splattering and restored by Foster.)
In 1978, Foster was honored with a City of Detroit Proclamation, presented to him by Mayor Coleman A. Young. Michigan Chronicle columnist Susan Watson wrote of him, "In my time, I've been around a lot of bright, insightful people, but I don't recall ever being in the presence of genius before. I think I would have remembered it, had it happened.
"LeRoy Foster is genius. He is a small, compact man with taut brown skin and eyes that dance in tiny, patent-leather steps. Instead of radiating energy, he draws energy to him like a magnet. Seeing that tiny man, with the tight embarrassed smile, standing beside complex and evocative mural simply took my breath away."
Dr. Charles Wright, founder of Detroit's Museum of African-American History and a good friend of Foster, observed, "He made no compromise. He gave a Negroid appearance to a lot of his paintings … and that disturbed some black people, but it didn't bother him. He was never free from controversy."
Foster was also gay. (I attended many of his Woodward Avenue studio parties when I was a teenager.) His work exhibits an energetic, masculine, sinewy power that displays the male physique to careful and attentive advantage. (It is perhaps, in our time, a little too obviously the work of a gay artist. Indeed, the Detroit Monitor headlined one of its columns about Foster, "Detroit's Own Michelangelo".)
Hoping to redress the absence of Foster's work in the DIA African American Galleries I spoke to several DIA personnel about him. I gathered a dozen or more press clipping from the Music and Performing Arts Section of the main branch of the Detroit Public Library.
I sent these clippings with a covering note to the DIA's curator of African American Art Valerie Mercer, later e-mailing her to see if she had received them. She never gave me the simple courtesy of a reply. I last saw LeRoy Foster in downtown Detroit. He was paying a utility bill at the bank. He looked shockingly old, fragile, but he remembered me. (Or, so he said.) He died in 1993, age 67. During his last year of life of he saw no art, his own or others. He was blind.
Sadly, today he's all but forgotten. The DIA (and the Charles Wright African American Museum) shamefully a part of his untimely neglect.

As for the program's constitutionality, the government argued that it was covered by the third-party doctrine, which says people do not have a reasonable expectation of privacy regarding information they voluntarily divulge to others (in this case, the phone companies from which the NSA collected its metadata). The Supreme Court invented that doctrine in United States v. Miller, a 1976 case involving bank records. Three years later, the Court invoked the doctrine in Smith v. Maryland, which involved a warrantless "pen register" that police used to record the numbers dialed by a robbery suspect over the course of a few days. Although that situation is rather different from the collection of personal information about millions of people for years, the government argued that Smith shows the NSA's program was consistent with the Fourth Amendment.
"There are strong reasons to doubt that Smith applies here," the 9th Circuit says. "The distinctions between Smith and this case are legion and most probably constitutionally significant….Society may not have recognized as reasonable Smith's expectation of privacy in a few days' worth of dialed numbers but is much more likely to perceive as private several years' worth of telephony metadata collected on an ongoing, daily basis—as demonstrated by the public outcry following the revelation of the metadata collection program."
The Supreme Court in Smith drew a distinction between the "contents" of a phone call and information about numbers dialed, deeming the latter much less sensitive. But "in recent years the distinction between content and metadata 'has become increasingly untenable,'" the appeals court notes. "The amount of metadata created and collected has increased exponentially, along with the government's ability to analyze it."
The 9th Circuit emphasizes how revealing this information can be, quoting former NSA General Counsel Stewart Baker. "Metadata absolutely tells you everything about somebody's life," Baker said. "If you have enough metadata you don't really need content." . . .
The 9th Circuit notes that the Supreme Court expressed similar concerns in Carpenter v. United States, the 2018 case in which the justices said the third-party doctrine does not apply to cellphone location data. Furthermore, the appeals court says, "numerous commentators and two Supreme Court Justices have questioned the continuing viability of the third-party doctrine under current societal realities."
Here is where Gorsuch comes in. He dissented in Carpenter, not because he thought cops should be allowed to collect cellphone location data without a warrant but because he thought the third-party doctrine should be scrapped entirely, along with the malleable "reasonable expectation" test. Nowadays, Gorsuch noted, people routinely store sensitive information—including "private documents" that, "in other eras, we would have locked safely in a desk drawer or destroyed"—on third-party servers. According to the reasoning of Miller and Smith, he said, "police can review all of this material, on the theory that no one reasonably expects any of it will be kept private. But no one believes that, if they ever did."
The 9th Circuit did not reach a firm conclusion about the constitutionality of the NSA's program, because it was not necessary to decide whether the convictions should stand. But its observations show how readily the government invades our privacy on the flimsiest pretext, blithely dismissing constitutional concerns when they prove inconvenient. That alarming tendency cannot be corrected by switching out one politician for another.

Supporting the Tor Project
Bruce Schneier is one of the most popular figures in the USA who supports the Tor browser project. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Schneier is an American computer security specialist, author, and cryptographer. He is the CEO of Counterpane Internet Security, a consulting and managed security operations firm that he founded in 2002. Schneier is also a contributing writer to The Guardian news site, where he has blogged about everything from surveillance and security to random topics such as Lego.
In addition to his work in the computer security field, Schneier is also a strong advocate for privacy rights. He is a vocal supporter of the Tor browser project, which allows users to browse the internet anonymously. In 2014, Schneier wrote an article for The Guardian entitled "Why I Support the Tor Project." In it, he discusses the importance of online privacy and he has been a vocal critic of the NSA's mass surveillance program, and has even written a book on the subject. In addition to his work as a computer security expert, he is also a civil liberties advocate. In 2014, he spoke out in support of the Tor browser project, saying that it is "an important tool for dissidents and journalists around the world." He has also been critical of government attempts to undermine encryption, saying that it is "a fundamental security tool." Schneier is one of the most respected voices in the security community, and his support for the Tor browser project helps to legitimize it in the eyes of many people.
Other public figures who openly support the Tor Project are :
* Jacob Appelbaum - an American developer who worked on the Tor Project and is a vocal privacy and civil liberties advocate. Born in Seattle, Washington, Appelbaum is a well-known figure in the hacker community. He has been involved in a number of high-profile projects, including the development of the Tor browser.
* Laura Poitras - an American filmmaker and journalist who is best known for her work on the NSA surveillance story. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Poitras is a three-time Academy Award nominee. Her film Citizenfour won the 2014 Best Documentary Feature Oscar. Poitras is a vocal advocate for privacy rights and has been a strong supporter of the Tor Project.
* Edward Snowden - an American computer professional who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA). Born in North Carolina, Snowden began working as a contractor
* Glenn Greenwald - an American journalist who wrote extensively about the NSA's mass surveillance program, based on documents leaked by Edward Snowden. Born in New York City, Greenwald is a former constitutional and civil rights litigator. He is currently a columnist for The Intercept.
These public figures help to legitimize the Tor Project and raise awareness about the importance of online privacy. Their support is crucial in the fight against mass surveillance and government attempts to undermine encryption.
Some hard facts about attempts of undermining encryption are :
In September of 2019, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) announced its intention to force Facebook to break the end-to-end encryption on its Messenger app. This would have allowed the DOJ to listen in on conversations between suspected criminals. However, Facebook refused to comply with the request, and the DOJ dropped the case.
In December of 2019, it was revealed that the United Kingdom's intelligence agency, GCHQ, had developed a tool to hack into Apple's iMessage platform. This allowed them to read messages that were encrypted with iMessage's end-to-end encryption. The news caused uproar among privacy advocates, and Apple quickly issued a patch to fix the security flaw.
The battle between the FBI and Apple over the San Bernardino shooter's iPhone. In 2016, the FBI demanded that Apple create a backdoor into the iPhone's encryption so they could access the shooter's data. However, Apple refused to comply, saying that creating such a backdoor would jeopardize the security of all iPhone users. The case eventually went to court, but the judge ruled in favor of Apple.
In 2016, on the orders of President Barack Obama, the US government banned strong encryption. The ban was short-lived, however, and was quickly reversed by President Donald Trump.
In 2016 the FBI tried to force Microsoft to hand over customer data that was stored on servers in Ireland. However, Microsoft refused to comply, saying that the FBI did not have jurisdiction over Irish servers. The case is still ongoing, but Microsoft has remained firm in its position.
It is clear that the government will continue to try to force companies to break encryption. However, it is also clear that many companies are unwilling to comply with these demands. This situation is likely to continue in the future, with the government making more demands and companies refusing to budge. There may be some legal battles, but ultimately it is up to the companies themselves to decide whether or not they want to give in to government demands.
The Tor Project is a critical tool in the fight against mass surveillance and government attempts to undermine encryption. The support of public figures helps to legitimize the project and raise awareness about the importance of online privacy. These attempts by the government are a clear violation of our rights.
How to support the Tor project :
There are many ways to support the Tor project. The most important thing is to raise awareness about the importance of online privacy and the threats to it. You can do this by talking to your friends and family about Tor, and telling them why you think it's important. You can also write articles or blog posts about Tor, or make videos about it. If you're a developer, you can help out with the development of the software. And of course, you can donate money to the project to help keep it running.
The fight for online privacy is an important one, and the Tor Project is at the forefront of that fight. With your support, we can continue to make progress in ensuring that everyone has the right to privacy online. Thank you for your support.

The Military-Industrial-Technological Complex
Tumblr media
In 1961, in his farewell address to the nation as our 34th President, Dwight Eisenhower warned that “we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex.” (Click)  His words are often repeated, a reminder that we should avoid the concentration of too much money and power in these entities. In the 21st Century, we should add a third actor to that roster.  Technology.  Technology’s ability to gather mountains of personal data about each of us and to monetize that information for commercial profit can pose a threat to our free society.  (Click)   When Edward Snowdon (Click) revealed the National Security Agency’s (NSA) invasive surveillance of the public,  he may have little known its data paled when compared to incursions from the private sector.     Amazon, for example,  began as a purveyor of books.  Today, it has moved on and created a new industry known as cloud computing.  Monolithic in its abilities, it can accommodate almost infinite data storage, analytics, machine learning and beyond  (“Tech’s Military Dilemma,” by Jacob Silverman, July/August, The New Republic, pg. 14) (Click)   No wonder the government came knocking with pots of money.  When competitors saw the potential, like bees to a clover filed, they rushed to develop similar technologies.  Google was one of them.  Recently, they were under contract with the Air Force to improve drone technology.  When 3,000  employees objected, however, the company didn’t renew its contract.  (Ibid, pg. 15.) But no one should be complacent about that.  Eric Schmidt, (Click) the former head of  Alphabet, parent company of Google, continues to sit on Pentagon advisory boards. (Ibid, pg. 5.) The military may well need the expertise of the tech giants, the question is to what extent?  And are there boundaries? As writer Jacob Silver points out, how these tech giants answer these questions will have huge implications for society.  Can these companies retain their liberal ideas and serve big government as well?  More importantly, are these questions for them to answer, alone?  Or does the public have a role? Presumably, our elected leaders should protect our interests, but they are so far behind the curve in their understanding of technology, their ignorance poses a danger. (Click)  Without public oversight,  the country could be headed down a dangerous road. (Originally published 7/30/2018)

The Other Fourth: The Amendment That Ascertains Power to This Independence Day

The Amendment That Ascertains Power to This Independence Day
Dispensing all pomp and circumstance, national birthdays have a way of turning into numbing occasions for grandstanding patriotism and overindulgent gluttony. It’s no different in the U.S., even as Independence Day marks a moment of rebellion and self-sacrifice. That said, flags and (non-military) parades are Ok, but it can’t hurt to…

The much-talked about production did not disappoint; the modernized visuals create many new layers to the show, and make you think about events and characters in a whole new way. Nehal, Allison, Justin, and Christia were probably my favorites, but the entire cast is so talented, it’s difficult to choose any as standouts. A very nice capture overall. There are a couple quick dropouts in act one, but no major blackouts. There is one head that can be seen occasionally, but it only blocks a small portion of the stage and only affects the action for about 20-30 seconds of the entire show. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent as usual. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Les Misérables - Duisburg - 1996 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Jerzy Jeszke (Jean Valjean), Hardy Rudolz (Javert), Cornelia Drese (Fantine), Deborah Dutcher (Cosette), Felix Martin (Marius), Sanni Luis (Éponine), Martin Berger (Enjolras), Tom Zahner (Thénardier), Anne Welte (Madame Thénardier), Willi Welp (The Bishop) Les Misérables - Dutch Revival - Spring, 2008 FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: René van Kooten (Jean Valjean), Wim van den Driessche (Javert), Nurlaila Karim (Fantine), Suzan Seegers (Cosette), Jamai Loman (Marius), Céline Purcell (Éponine), Freek Bartels (Enjolras), Gerben Grimmius (u/s Thénardier), Marjolein Algera (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Complete show, Amateur capture A, Double dvd Les Misérables - Fifth National Tour - October 5, 2018 (hitmewithyourbethshot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Nick Cartell (Jean Valjean), Josh Davis (Javert), Mary Kate Moore (Fantine), Jillian Butler (Cosette), Joshua Grosso (Marius), Paige Smallwood (Éponine), Matt Shingledecker (Enjolras), J Anthony Crane (Thénardier), Allison Guinn (Madame Thénardier), Sam Middleton (Gavroche), Cate Elefante (u/s Little Cosette), Matt Moisey (Grantaire), Monte J Howell (Combeferre), Tim Quartier (s/w Feuilly), Christopher Viljoen (Courfeyrac), Patrick Rooney (Jean Prouvaire), Gabriel Sidney Brown (Joly), Andrew Maughan (Lesgles), Felipe Barbosa Bombonato (Babet), John Ambrosino (Claquesous), Steve Czarnecki (Factory Foreman), Ashley Dawn Mortensen (Factory Girl), John Ambrosino (Bamatabois) Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - November 11, 2006 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Victor Hawks (u/s Jean Valjean), Norm Lewis (Javert), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Éponine), Aaron Lazar (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Jacob Levine (Gavroche), Drew Sarich (Grantaire) NOTES: A nice capture here of Victor as Valjean. The capture is a little on the dark side, but still enjoyable. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - February 17, 2007 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Norm Lewis (Javert), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Éponine), Drew Sarich (u/s Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Jenny Galloway (Madame Thénardier), Jacob Levine (Gavroche) NOTES: A really nice video of the first broadway revival. Widescreen. Cleaned up nicely in remastering. And it has Sarich. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - May 12, 2007 (Matinee) (jstarz's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Drew Sarich (u/s Javert), Lea Salonga (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Mandy Bruno (Éponine), Max von Essen (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Ann Harada (Madame Thénardier), Stephen Trafton (u/s Grantaire) NOTES: Filmed in widescreen (though encoded in 4:3, so there are bars at the top and bottom of the screen), this is a nice capture of some of the new cast members. Drew and Ann give great performances in their roles. The second disc also includes the first 15 minutes of the February 24, 2007 Evening show, filmed from the rear right orchestra. Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - June 1, 2007 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alexander Gemignani (Jean Valjean), Ben Davis (Javert), Lea Salonga (Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Marissa McGowan (Éponine), Max von Essen (Enjolras), Gary Beach (Thénardier), Ann Harada (Madame Thénardier) Les Misérables - First Broadway Revival - August 24, 2007 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Drew Sarich (Jean Valjean), Robert Hunt (Javert), Nikki Renée Daniels (u/s Fantine), Ali Ewoldt (Cosette), Adam Jacobs (Marius), Megan McGinnis (Éponine), Max von Essen (Enjolras), Chip Zien (Thénardier), Becca Ayers (u/s Madame Thénardier), Brian D'Addario (Gavroche) NOTES: Some nice closeups/mediums. A nice capture of the new cast. Capture can be dark at times, but mostly in the darker scenes. Includes a technical difficulty when the Barricades first come out, the show is stopped and includes the announcement.. A- Les Misérables - Fourth UK & Ireland Tour - January, 2019 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Killian Donnelly (Jean Valjean), Nic Greenshields (Javert), Katie Hall (Fantine), Bronwen Hanson (Cosette), Harry Apps (Marius), Tegan Bannister (Éponine), Will Richardson (Enjolras), Martin Ball (Thénardier), Sophie-Louise Dann (Madame Thénardier) Les Misérables - Hollywood Bowl - August 9, 2008 FORMAT:  WMV (HD) CAST: J Mark McVey (Jean Valjean), Brian Stokes Mitchell (Javert), Melora Hardin (Fantine), Michele Maika (Cosette), John Lloyd Young (Marius), Lea Michele (Éponine), Tom Lowe (Enjolras), Sage Ryan (Gavroche) NOTES: J. Mark McVey, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Lea Michele, Melora Hardin, John Lloyd Young, Michele Maika, Michael McCormick, Tom Lowe, Ruth Williamson. Juni's master filmed in widescreen and can be a little shakey at times in tight zooms. Nice to see the audience version compared to the Proshot one. A- Les Misérables - Japan - 1997

Les Misérables - Paris - 1991 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Robert Marien (Jean Valjean), Patrick Rocca (Javert), Marie Zamora (Cosette), Jérôme Pradon (Marius), Stéphanie Martin (Éponine), Julien Combey (Enjolras), Laurent Gendron (Thénardier), Marie-France Roussel (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Act 1 + finale of act 2. This is 100% NOT Louise Pitre playing Fantine Les Misérables - Second Broadway Revival - March 1, 2014 (Preview) (Highlights) (where is your red schaaaf's master) FORMAT:  MOV (HD) CAST: Ramin Karimloo (Jean Valjean), Will Swenson (Javert), Caissie Levy (Fantine), Samantha Hill (Cosette), Andy Mientus (Marius), Nikki M James (Éponine), Kyle Scatliffe (Enjolras), Cliff Saunders (Thénardier), Keala Settle (Madame Thénardier), Gaten Matarazzo (Gavroche) NOTES: First preview. It includes most of the show. Loud excited audience. Blind shot from stage right third row, with no zooms. Keala Settle sprained her ankle at some point between The Robbery and One Day More, resulting in her not being in One Day More and using a cane during Wedding Chorale/Beggars at the Feast. It’s refreshing to see different faces in the lead roles, and both Nathaniel and Earl carry the show well. Nathaniel’s vocals are powerful and he has a great rapport with Caissie and Samantha. A lovely capture overall with no obstruction. Look Down is mostly blacked out and there are a couple quick dropouts during The Bishop scene and Lovely Ladies, but the show is otherwise fully intact. There is also some washout in high contrast wide shots. It’s filmed in 16:9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call and playbill scans. Les Misérables - Second Broadway Revival - July 1, 2015 FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Ramin Karimloo (Jean Valjean), John Rapson (u/s Javert), Erika Henningsen (Fantine), Melissa Mitchell (u/s Cosette), Chris McCarrell (Marius), Brennyn Lark (Éponine), Wallace Smith (Enjolras), Gavin Lee (Thénardier), Rachel Izen (Madame Thénardier), Sam Chuck (Gavroche), Joe Spieldenner (Grantaire), Weston Wells Olson (s/w Combeferre) NOTES: Act I begins at "The Runaway Cart" and nearly complete Act II. First time in history two same productions of a major musical played in the same city. Les Misérables - West End - May 9, 1987 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Martin Smith (u/s Jean Valjean), Clive Carter (Javert), Kathleen Rowe McAllen (Fantine), Jacinta Mulcahy (Cosette), Maurice Clarke (u/s Marius), Jayne Draper (Éponine), Martin George (Enjolras), David Delve (Thénardier), Myra Sand (Madame Thénardier), Cameron Stewart (u/s Grantaire) NOTES: Commonly mistaken as December 28, 1988! Martin Smith was part of the West End cast for 6 months starting December 1986, and the non-circulated first-generation DVD labels the date as 1987/05/09. Les Misérables - West End - December 28, 1991 (House-Cam's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Stig Rossen (Jean Valjean), Paul Leonard (Javert), Jenna Russell (Fantine), Sarah Jane Hassell (Cosette), Daryll Winslow (Marius), Meredith Braun (Éponine), Mike Sterling (u/s Enjolras), David Hampshire (u/s The Bishop), Amanda Dainty (u/s Factory Girl) NOTES: Black and white. (Proof: https://youtu.be/KI_KHnLwk_k) Les Misérables - West End - May 6, 2006 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Tim Godwin (u/s Jean Valjean), Cornell John (Javert), Kerry Ellis (Fantine), Julia Möller (Cosette), Hayden Tee (Marius), AJ Callaghan (u/s Éponine), Nolan Dark (u/s Enjolras), Barry James (Thénardier), Tracie Bennett (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Taper’s comments: Amanda and Nolan are better than the principles and Tim sounds uncannily like JOJ (Home Counties accent not-withstanding). He first understudied in 1999, when JOJ was the principal, which may explain the similarity. About half of the Chain Gang song missing and filming starts in earnest during Valjean on parole. Other parts missed because of ushers include several random one-second cover-ups, part of the wedding and about half of Finale. Heads in the way sometimes block the action on the lower right of the stage, but they are shot around well. Vantage point provides some interesting views such as of Fantine during Lovely Ladies. Wonderful performances from the entire cast but especially then soon-to-be-Elphaba Kerry Ellis. Les Misérables - West End - September 19, 2013 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Daniel Koek (Jean Valjean), James Gant (u/s Javert), Na-Young Jeon (Fantine), Samantha Dorsey (Cosette), Rob Houchen (Marius), Carrie Hope Fletcher (Éponine), Anton Zetterholm (Enjolras), Cameron Blakely (Thénardier), Wendy Ferguson (Madame Thénardier), Ilan Galkoff (Gavroche), Caoimhe Judd (Little Cosette) Les Misérables - West End - June 14, 2014 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Daniel Koek (Jean Valjean), Tam Mutu (Javert), Na-Young Jeon (Fantine), Samantha Dorsey (Cosette), Dougie Carter (Marius), Carrie Hope Fletcher (Éponine), Anton Zetterholm (Enjolras), Cameron Blakely (Thénardier), Wendy Ferguson (Madame Thénardier), Carl Mullaney (Grantaire) NOTES: Final performance of the 2013/14 cast Les Misérables - West End - July 9, 2015 (Highlights) (musicalmania123's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Peter Lockyer (Jean Valjean), Jeremy Secomb (Javert), Rachelle Ann Go (Fantine), Zoe Doano (Cosette), Rob Houchen (Marius), Carrie Hope Fletcher (Éponine), Bradley Jaden (Enjolras), Phil Daniels (Thénardier), Katy Secombe (Madame Thénardier) NOTES: Highlights only. Surveillance electoralism
Tumblr media
Writing in MIT Tech Review, Samuel Woolley and Jacob Gursky take a deep dive into the data-gathering in the apps from the Trump and Biden campaigns. It's quite a study in contrasts!
https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/06/21/1004228/trumps-data-hungry-invasive-app-is-a-voter-surveillance-tool-of-extraordinary-scope/
The Trump campaign is like Cambridge Analytica Mark II: invasive even by the standards of 2020, with Bluetooth access so your movements can be  tracked by sleazy data-brokers, as well as endless-scroll propaganda channels to feed white nationalists' grievance complexes.
It's a feature-for-feature clone of the app used by Indian PM Modi, another authoritarian strongman with serious genocidal ambitions, and Modi has used the app to create regional propaganda clubs and feed them everything they need to push his narrative, to the brink of war.
By contrast, Biden's app is built around exploring your social graph and connecting you to people you have a genuine personal connection with in order to have a meaningful political conversations.
It's an evolution of the grassroots organizing tactics that the Obama campaign used to great effect in 2008 and especially in 2012.
But when I read about the tactics in use, I have another touchpoint.
Back in 2010, I was working on Homeland, the sequel to Little Brother.
I knew I wanted the plot to turn on a next-generation, networked election campaign, but I was stumped for how that would work.
For weeks, I interviewed top electoral strategists, people who'd been praised as high-tech svengalis for the campaigns they'd run.
I'd call them and say, "OK, pretend you've got a candidate who'd do anything you asked, and the smartest technologists in the world working for you. What would you build?"
The responses were so dull, the thrice-brewed teabags left over from the Dean campaign.
Then, on a lark, I asked Aaron Swartz what to do. I sent him a brief email outlining the challenge. A few hours later, he sent me a shovel-ready, complete plan - a plan that encompasses everything Obama did in 2012, and everything Biden is doing in 2020, and then some.
I basically just pasted that passage into the book. I also included it in my obit for Aaron when he killed himself in 2013, two weeks before the book came out. I toured that book across the USA, and everywhere I went, I talked about Aaron.
https://boingboing.net/2013/01/12/rip-aaron-swartz.html
We're reissuing Homeland this summer, in a new omnibus edition with Little Brother, with an intro by @snowden, who also cites Aaron as an inspiration, and who risked his life to reveal the connection between commercial and state surveillance.
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250774583
We're including the afterword Aaron wrote for the book, too.
Meanwhile, I see his fingerprints all over the things that give me hope in 2020. The Trump and Biden apps represent a stark contrast in approaches - one that sees supporters as marks, and the other as supporters.
Aaron's plan would create a tireless, committed army of supporters that would help their candidate govern: "I agree with you, I want to do it, now make me do it."
When Obama took office in 2012 he shut down his network, not willing to govern ahead of an activist rabble.
Meanwhile, the Tea Party held the TGOP's feet to the fire for four years, not letting them give a nanometer. They made Obama's life hell, and blocked virtually all of his agenda.
The GOP in Congress and the Senate make the TGOP look reasonable by comparison. They're fucking orcs. If Biden wins in November, his only hope of governing is that activist rabble.
So for me, as interesting as the contrast in surveillance approaches is, the real action is going to be in what happens afterward: will Biden shut down his app and tell his activists to stand down? Or will he govern with the activist rabble holding his feet to the fire?
