i need seasons 2-4 of kyle rayners reworked adventures i am OBSESSED :o
OH BABY BABY ME TOO ME TOO OKAY. Believe it or not I'm trying to keep all of this as short as possible so the random little HCs are being left out, I might add some extra later.
So again this is a single season haha. Because a) it did not actually end up that short, I got a bit #poetic there, and b) Season 3&4 are a bit vaguer in my head and aren't as entertaining to tell! If/when I wrangle them into something much more interesting I'll share them. I know that there's probably a 1-2 year timeskip to Season 3 and a much, much longer timeskip to Season 4 AKA Green Lantern: Shippuden, which would have a different protagonist. Milagro Reyes, Blue Beetle's sister. Alright, that one I DEFINITELY have to elaborate on later...
TL;DR
Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1 combo with Star Trek The Original Series but also the moral of the story is ACAB.
The moral of like this entire children's cartoon is ACAB, by the way, in case I was remotely subtle about that.
GREEN LANTERN SEASON 2: SOMEHOW THIS WAS RENEWED BY CARTOON NETWORK
(By the way, I'm super embarrassed to say this, but I love thinking of stories hyper-specifically styled after kid's cartoons. In case you were wondering: New Wave airs on Kid's WB between Pokemon and Jackie Chan Adventures on Saturday mornings. Green Lantern airs on Cartoon Network, it's ridiculously over promoted because the network doesn't realize how ACAB it is. That one Legion of Superheroes Zoboomafoo show is on PBS. You get the idea. Stories ought to have clarity of purpose.)
Think the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, when Aang is searching for any remaining airbenders or a firebending teacher. Same energy.
The episodes are formulaic. Kyle's on a space road trip, searching for signs and survivors of a lost culture. Each episode Kyle lands on a new planet, digs up some rumor or trail to surviving Green Lantern rings, journals, records - anything that could prove what happened to Hal Jordan. Sometimes he finds a trail to an abandoned Green Lantern outpost. Other times he's fortunate enough to actually meet an ex-Green Lantern, usually while fishing them out of some trouble. Other times he's just landing for a pit stop and finds himself wrapped up in alien trouble. Kyle's lost as hell, in over his head, and has no idea where to even begin on this ridiculously ambitious journey. Kyle's always thrown himself into new situations and new places and trusted everything would work out, but space is a little bigger than America. He just has to trust that the answer's out there. He can't go home without it. He can't look Guy, John, and the Justice League in the eyes and lie to them. Even for BTS.
He has one guide in this journey: Kilowog's ring! It serves as his personal trainer on how to use the ring, advisor, teacher, and educator on alien species. It's gruff, pretty silly, but Kyle is depressed to learn that his ring is his closest friend now. It is the sole teacher Kyle has into the actual Green Lantern Corp - it always advises him on their creed, their views, and how a real Lantern would solve a problem. It is remarkably unhelpful on finding a damn Lantern.
Instead, all Kyle finds are problems. Every planet has a problem he needs solving, a person he needs to help, or a disaster to avert. Sure, none of it's Kyle's business - but hey, he's a superhero. Not a cop. You can barely even call him a Green Lantern. Everywhere he goes, citizens of the galaxy tell him about the GLs they met and used to know - how they hurt, how they helped, how they should have done better - and who they wished the GLs would have been. They wished that the GLs actually helped instead of enforced.
They don't have an actual GL. But they do have Kyle. So Kyle says - show me where to help.
He helps wherever he can. He sees everything and learns everything. He meets heroes, villains, and ordinary people just trying to get by. He meets heroes from all walks of life, sees every kind of civilization and culture and found the good and bad in each one. He talks to everybody, from the kings to the peasants, and learns from them all. He learns about the thousand systems of government in the galaxy, and learns about where they succeed and where they fail.
He makes friends. Brave people who fish his fat from the fire. Regretful ex-Lanterns who threw themselves back into being a warrior even without their rings - and embittered ex-Lanterns who resented the loss of their power and authority. He meets a princess who spent her entire life figuring out how to govern well, and the leader of a rebel cell who specializes in freedom. He meets people who are very good at explosives and people who have sworn never to throw a punch. They all have something to teach him.
Not even the ex-Lanterns know what happened on Oa. Kilowog's ring can't show the black box to anybody but its wielder. So Kyle keeps travelling. The ring picked up an unusual energy signal in the next system over - maybe there's an outpost there!
(The unusual energy signal was space vampires. That's how Kyle saved a space Transylvanian town from intergalactic vampire pirates.)
Kyle saves people, but he has to make decisions too. He solves problems. Kilowog's Ring tells him how the GLC would have solved the problem, and he usually takes it into consideration, but usually the episode is about Kyle learning how to solve the problems his own way. He learns how to judge the values of the GLC critically and think for himself, and how to admire not the institution but the good people inside of it like Kilowog. How to fight to promote equity and justice, instead of just fighting to maintain pre-existing systems of power.
Six months later, Kyle has finally defeated whatever (Zuko/Zhao/whatever) villain has been chasing him around (they join his space found family) and makes it to the (North Pole) Green Lantern Outpost At The Edge Of The Universe. This was it. He's spent a month following this trail, and he's risked everything. He's turned over every intergalactic stone, taken every risk. If there's anything, it has to be here.
But all he sees is an empty tower surveying an empty kingdom. And Kyle looks around and he sees nothing. Not the last guru he was promised, or a mythical member of the Guardian species. There's no heroes or warriors. Nobody helpful. Nobody to fix anything. Nothing that will help the people he's met who need help, nobody who will use the GL powers for good. Nobody can restart the Corp as it deserves to be restarted, nobody to turn it around and use their immense power as it was meant to be used. Nobody to avenge Kilowog and expose Hal Jordan for who he really was. The real Green Lantern isn't here.
Kilowog!Ring: "What are ya talking about, kid? The guy's right here." Kyle, dirty with sticks in his hair, has not slept in thirty six hours, going insane: "IS HE FUCKING INVISIBLE" Kilowog!Ring: "That guy is you, kid :)" Kyle:
Well, Kyle feels like a fucking idiot. F to his hopes and dreams. But at least he's not scared anymore.
Kyle goes home.
Earth is different. Or maybe it's just Kyle that's different. Everything feels so much smaller but so much bigger, and when Kyle stands in the middle of L.A. he's captured by the beauty of the universe - the beauty of humanity as part of that universe, how humans are just another mundane strand in the great web of the universe, and how special they are for it. How he's not special, how he will always be a face in a crowd, just one insignificant person in a world of seven billion - but how amazing that is, to be among a proud seven billion! How improbable, to be the only Kyle Rayner! There are trillions of unique people in this universe, people who all have lives and stories and hopes and dreams, and there's no such thing as an insignificant soul. In an city where everybody has to be special, where everybody has to make it big and stand out and yell their names - none of them realize how special they all are just for living. Special just for being their fleshy, insane, amazing selves.
Kyle flies to the Watchtower and walks into the middle of a Justice League meeting. And he looks Superman in the eyes and says, "Hal Jordan killed the Green Lanterns."
….
Aaaand then he posts a video on his YouTube channel titled "coming clean" and the thumbnail is him sitting on a couch in his house.
Surprise bitch, he's pulling a Tati. Kyle spills EVERYTHING. He tells the whole truth and nothing but the truth. What the Earth's hero did, why he killed himself, and why it happened.
Kyle explains that the Corp was not destroyed by Hal Jordan - it was destroyed by its own greed and vanity. Its black-and-white and justice-above-all ethos took a grieving man and warped him into a mass murderer. A power such as the Green Lanterns should be used to help people, not control them. It should protect people, not impose law. So uhhh end video, I'm fucking off to space agan, Kyle out!
A year ago, a funky little blue man told Kyle "Help them." He could have warned Kyle about Rayner, told him what a Lantern was, but that was what he chose to say. Kyle never really understood what he meant. Superheroes helped people, right? That's what Kyle figured at first. Six months later, after learning the truth, Kyle believes that he must have been asking Kyle to help the GLC - find the surviving GLs, save the organization, help Jordan himself. But he never really understood until now. It took life on Earth and life in space to really get it.
The Guardian understood that the Corp failed because it cared more about fighting evil than doing good. Yes, it kept people safe, but it never helped them. The Corp was light and goodness in the galaxy, but it never put helping people first. And Kyle finally realizies that this is what the last Guardian wanted for him, and what he wanted for the Corp. This was the future the Guardian wanted. And that's what he's going to do. That'll be Kyle's ethos.
He'll help people. Nothing more, nothing less.
It doesn't matter if people believe him. It doesn't matter if the League believes him. He doesn't stick around to find out. Kyle returns to Oa and finds the ruined power battery, the same battery Hal Jordan used up in his own selfishness and grief and destroyed.
And, with the implacable will of somebody who's always known what he's wanted, who has seen how to create it and what must be created, who travelled the galaxy and back and helped people at every stop of the way, who knows exactly what he wants the GLC to become, he remakes Oa.
He reaches inside the battery and pulls out a handful of rings. Kyle is instantly convinced he's fucked up the whole thing already, because they're all different colors?! Orange ring, Black ring, what the hell? Why is Kyle so bad at this?! But he releases them, and they go zooming off. Somewhere, Guy and John get their rings back. Not the rings they wanted.
Kyle finally makes some normal-ass rings and gives them to his found family/supporting cast from the season (Gaang…Kyle Krew…we'll workshop it), people who all have different perspectives and methods and ways of problem solving but who are all equally dedicated to helping people. They will be the first vanguard of the new Green Lantern Corp.
If Kyle wants it hard enough, it can happen. And all Kyle wants to do now is become a good man, who leaves the right legacy. Season 3 is him running around like a chicken with his head cut off trying to run a gigantic space organization by himself but you know what he's doing his best.
Kyle, who has been writing space emails to Alex this entire time as a framing device: "Hey, honey, so I've been worldbuilding." Alex: "Cool, for the webtoon? Or for your next DND campaign?" Kyle: "No I mean I've been building a world. Should it have volcanoes? I want a volcano." Alex: "Kyle I cannot put you in charge of dishes much less a world what the FUCK are you doing." Kyle, crying: "I have no idea honey can you come here please I suck at this."
#green lantern#kyle rayner#hal jordan#guy gardner#john stewart#so actually Kyle's intro arc in the comic was KINDA like this#where he started off as a goof not taking the whole thing seriously and then Alex got murdered and he fought Hal Jordan and he sobered up#but uhhhh this doesn't involve any dead girlfriends so it's better :)#did you know that the 'fridged woman' thing was FROM ALEX?#anyway New Wave is actually in the Jackie Chan adventures art style sorry I never shared that#my writing#there IS actually a GL animated series from like 2010#it's like. it's fine.

I've been thinking about if they released a Pokemon game themed around every type, and what they would be like.
Ghost: Most obvious, something like Luigi's Mansion. Very cute, spooky adventure in a big haunted house. Prominently features references to youkai and ghosts like Toilet Hanako.
Psychic: By contrast, the psychic game is actually sci-fi horror (as much as a Pokemon game could get by with it). Lavender Town vibes, would heavily feature Alakazam and Hypno.
Water: Epic underwater survival game like Subnautica.
Fighting: A martial arts story like a Jackie Chan movie, though probably more like Kung Fu Panda. All the characters are fighting-type Pokemon. Main character is a Mankey as a nod to Journey to the West.
Flying: Set on a flying island like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Dark: Another horror game, with a darkness-based sanity mechanic like Darkest Dungeon or Amnesia: The Dark Descent. (Though, probably a stat other than sanity.)
Fairy: A medieval fantasy RPG with a story evocative of old stories dealing with the fae.
Ground: Set deep underground, a cave exploration game.
Rock: Set on another planet/dimension, about mining strange alien mineral formations. Your choice whether the Pokemon were brought along, or somehow already there.
Steel: Pokemon meets gundam!
Electric: Expanding on the teleporter incident with Bill in the first game, following a series of teleporter fusion mishaps and figuring out how to fix them. Gameplay in the form of engineering puzzles.
Normal: A medical game where you work in a Pokemon Center doing surgery on Pokemon. Obviously heavily featuring Chansey.
Fire: A traveling circus act with acrobatics using the elaborate fire displays that fire-type Pokemon can make. The gameplay mechanic is both navigating the fire-based obstacle courses, and designing them for maximum style to garner approval from the audience.
Ice: A platformer where you make ice to proceed, and can trap your enemies in ice.
Grass: A first-person RPG set in a jungle, Jumanji vibes. You play a botanist trying to find a rare flower.
Poison: A Thief-like game where you sneak around and poison assassination targets in the most kid-friendly way possible. Possibly you play as a member of Team Rocket.
Dragon: Another medieval fantasy RPG, fairly typical DnD fare.
Bug: Saving my favorite type for last! A species identification game, featuring real bugs as well as Pokemon.

Hey there!
I saw your kudos, bookmark and comments on my fanfic!
I'm glad to hear that you liked it!
Also, I'm glad to see someone else can see the vision of this fanfic being an animated series.
I already have the voice actors in mind, which I'm sure you already saw as well.
In terms of art-style, I would want it to be done by Jeff Matsuda (the character designer behind Jackie Chan Adventures, The Batman and the 2007 TMNT film).
In terms of animation, definitely Flying Bark Studios (the animation studio behind Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Glitch Techs, LEGO Monkie Kid, and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur).
As for where it would air, it would have to be Freeform.
A series like this would definitely be too mature for Disney Channel.
Disney XD is basically DEAD.
And while you could argue Disney Plus would be the plus place for this series.
Here's something I need to make clear....
I actually want the seasons of the series to have more than 8 goddamn episodes.
The series would air new episodes on Saturday nights, as part of a reboot of the classic programming block, Jetix.
If you want to see that idea, you can find it on my blog.
When I think of Jetix, I think Inspector Gadget and I think Pucca shorts also aired on that channel.

My Fanfics' Ideal Art-Styles
Recently, I've been feeling that I need to start using my Tumblr more to promote and share stuff about my fanfics (which admittedly I already do, but probably not to the extent that I should).
Essentially to help give you guys an idea on what to expect for each one.
And even share some important info that readers should know when going into the fic.
And to start this new phase of my Tumblr, I've decided to make a post going over something that I think is really cool.
I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that whenever we read, we always imagine what we're reading would look like right before our eyes.
And today, I wanted to share what the art-styles of my fics would be like if they were visualized.
Maximum Marvel: DeputyRustArt
This one pretty much a no-brainer.
Given that the series was based off the AU of the same name created DeputyRust himself.
Plus, his style just screams "Maximum".
X-Men: The Next Mutation: Jeff Matsuda
Jeff Matsuda is a legend in the field of character designing.
Best known for his sharp and angular style.
You'll best know him for his work with Marvel, Dark Horse Comics, and Awesome Comics.
And more notably, as the character designer for Jackie Chan Adventures, The Batman, TMNT (2007), and the 2021 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe reboot.
I believe his style would fit this fic like a glove, especially with how action-heavy it is.
Also, it would be funny to think about since Jeff was a prominent penciler/illustrator for the X-Men titles during the mid-to-late 90s.
Nicktoons Mysteries: Izbubbles
Yeah, I finally decided on what to do for my Nicktoons fanfic.
It's gonna be a mystery/comedy-horror series, which will be premiere next month.
But anyway, Izbubbles would be the person I want to do the art-style for this series.
As you see, their art-style was able to translate the Nicktoons into one, unified style, while still keeping traces of each of their respective original art-styles.
And given that my series is gonna be set in Nicktropolis, a city where the Nicktoons all co-exist with each other, it would make sense that they would look like they would exist in the same world.
Spider-Man: Family Values: Clyde Tanksley
As you can see here, this style is a little more....out there when compared to the other artists I choose.
The best way I could describe the style is that it feels like an animated adult sitcom made back in the 90s.
Ya know, back when adult animation was actually experimental and creative and didn't give us....
This.
And in all honesty, I really dig this style and feel like it would find this fic perfectly.
I mean, it is essentially a family sitcom, except with a superhero twist.
And best part about this style, he basically made everyone here (the men and the women)....
youtube
Anyway, that's all I have for now.
Let me know what you guys think about my choices in art-styles.

What can you see taking place in or sharing the same universe as both Totally Spies and Martin Mystery. Other shows and other media in general.
No Team Galaxy doesn't count because the creators of both confirmed that's a show within a show in their universe.
Hmmm, good question! I never really thought that hard about it, but now that you ask I do have a few that I could see taking place in the same universe.
Here's my list:
Code Lyoko
Jackie Chan Adventures
Ben 10
Winx Club
Teen Titans
Megas XLR
I see these being in the same universe art style wise, but I could also see these from a story point of view.
(Only ones I'm not too sure about are Winx Club and Teen Titans.)
Thanks for the ask!

Top 5 designs from your formative years that defined your tastes
Bearing in mind that my formative years include a range that spans from "the moment I was old enough to understand concepts more complex than hunger and crying" to "the moment I started writing this post" and that a lot of designs have influenced my tastes over the years, here you go:
Goku and Vegeta, Dragon Ball Z
As a Latino I am quite literally obligated by law to put Goku and Vegeta on this list, but I was also huge into Dragon Ball Z as a kid and I actually think that show is what awakened the love of martial arts within me that still persists today. Toriyama's aesthetic is incredibly distinctive and had a great deal of influence over my initial forays into art and character design when I was much younger. These guys end up at #1 because DBZ has done so, so much to build my perception of combat and fight scenes and scale and and just sort of how a series should work that, like... I can't imagine myself getting into anime at all if I hadn't watched this show. Given how much of my taste is drawn from anime (although there's quite a bit coming from western media as well), my personal preferences would've taken a much different trajectory in that scenario.
Jotaro Kujo, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
I don't think any character has influenced my tastes in the modern era more than Jotaro, to be honest. He's one of the reasons many of my characters wear a hat/long coat combo and why the men in particular tend to be tall, buff, and stoic and have deep voices. He also influenced my appreciation of cool poses and characters that just beat the shit out of people with their mighty fists, as well as intelligent and analytical heroes at a time when I was used to seeing heroes just be stronger or grittier or more determined than their foes.
Samus Aran, Metroid/Super Smash Bros.
I'm pretty sure that Zero Suit Samus was the start of my irresistible desire for tall badass blonde ladies with big boobs. I have a type because of her. Let's just leave it at that.
Charizard, Pokemon
I think dragons are super cool and Charizard is a big part of why. Kid me loved Pokemon, a love which extended into adulthood, and Charizard was my favorite for a very long time. I'm pretty sure he's also where my fascination with fire powers came from. Also, the narratives around Ash's Charizard's fights in the anime did a lot to shape my perception of storytelling in combat.
The Good Hunter, Bloodborne
The other reason a lot of my characters have hats and long coats and are very gruff and stoic. Bloodborne is arguably my favorite game I've ever played and had a huge influence on my tastes and aesthetic. I particularly loved the Gothic Horror aspects of it (never been as big on Cosmic Horror tbh) and it really reignited my love for big brutal weapons that just fuck enemies up. It's also the reason the ocean is fucked up and awful in many of my original settings.
Honorable Mentions:
So fucking many not gonna lie but I'll just list a few. Funnily enough, a lot of my western influences actually come from books more so than TV/movies.
Jackie Chan - DBZ started my love for martial arts, but watching a bunch of Jackie Chan movies when I was younger grounded that aspect of my taste in something a bit more realistic than aliens who could fly throwing around energy blasts and leveling mountain ranges.
Godzilla - This is how I learned I love watching giant monsters fight. Monsterverse Godzilla has had a lot of influence on my tastes recently because I love the way he fights and the way the people making the Monsterverse movies drew from real fights between animals to build his fighting style.
I had a huge crush on Cynthia Pokemon as a kid but I had to pick between her and Samus and Samus won by virtue of timing.
Brutaka from Bionicle is cool as shit.
Yang Xiao Long from RWBY and Nearl from Arknights did not build my tastes so much as reinforce them. Hard.
Arknights in general has been one of the big influences on my original work not gonna lie.
MCU's Iron Man, Halo's Master Chief, and the Marines from StarCraft all helped codify my ideas of what powered armor should look like.
Esdeath from Akame ga Kill heavily reinforced my desire to be femdommed despite most of the rest of that series being steaming dogshit
King Arthur - I read so voraciously and from such an early age that my family couldn't keep age-appropriate books stocked faster than I could read them, so at some point my dad said "fuck it" and handed a collection of Arthurian Cycle stories written for adults to an eight-year-old and I have loved chivalric romance and knights in shining armor ever since.
There's so much more but I don't think I can possibly list them all
Thanks for sending me this. Everyone please ask more, I had a lot of fun answering the ones I've gotten so far

Kung Fu Panda: A Tale of Martial Arts and Humor
Kung Fu Panda, a 2008 animated wuxia comedy from DreamWorks Animation, directed by John Stevenson and Mark Osborne, brought a refreshing twist to the animated film genre. Featuring a stellar voice cast including Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Ian McShane, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, and Jackie Chan, the film introduces us to a whimsical world where anthropomorphic animals thrive in ancient China.
The story follows Po Ping, a clumsy yet enthusiastic giant panda who dreams of becoming a kung fu master despite working in his adoptive father Mr. Ping’s noodle shop. His life takes an unexpected turn when the wise and mystical Grand Master Oogway names him the "Dragon Warrior," tasked with stopping the villainous Tai Lung, a snow leopard with a vendetta and a lust for power.
Upon its release on June 6, 2008, Kung Fu Panda quickly became a box office hit. It earned $20.3 million on its opening day and a remarkable $60.2 million over the opening weekend, clinching the top spot at the box office. This success marked it as DreamWorks Animation's largest opening for a non-sequel and the highest-grossing animated film of the year worldwide. It also enjoyed the fourth largest opening for any DreamWorks film in the American and Canadian markets, trailing behind the Shrek sequels.
In the film, Po's journey from an enthusiastic but ineffective kung fu fan to a genuine martial arts hero is both hilarious and heartwarming. Shifu, the red panda kung fu master, initially struggles to see potential in Po but eventually discovers that Po's unique motivation—food—can be harnessed to develop a new kung fu style. With the help of the Furious Five—Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper, and Crane—Po learns that believing in oneself can turn the seemingly impossible into reality.
The film's success led to the release of Kung Fu Panda 2 in 2011 and Kung Fu Panda 3 in 2016, expanding the story of Po and his kung fu adventures. The franchise also includes a TV series, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, which premiered on Nickelodeon in 2011.
The film's premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15, 2008, was met with a standing ovation, and its subsequent releases were met with critical acclaim. It performed exceptionally well in the home video market, with 7.5 million DVD units sold in 2008, making it one of the year's top sellers.
In Indonesia, Kung Fu Panda was dubbed into Indonesian and aired on various local channels, further solidifying its global appeal.
With its charming blend of humor, action, and an inspirational message, Kung Fu Panda continues to be celebrated for its unique take on the martial arts genre and its enduring impact on animation.

My 2024 in Film: January
Since doing the whole year all at once was way too much of a chore, I figure this year I'll just do it by month.
Plus that way anyone who is interested can periodically get some ideas on what to watch during the year.
* = rewatched
January
*
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
(2023)
—Animated Coming-of-Age Action Comedy
When a family of mutated teenage turtles come across a band of mutant criminals, they are forced to choose a side: the humans they admire or the mutants they relate to.
I've always been a big fan of the ninja turtles so consider me biased, but I adore this movie. If you too are a turtles fan, you've probably already seen it. So for everyone else, here are some things that I love about this movie:
They are use actual teenagers for the turtles' voices and they do such a great job. Plus the production gave the kids a lot of creative control with the script and it really gives the characters a lot of life and realism.
There are so many interesting artistic choices going on in this! They use this really wild art/animation style that's purposefully made to be messy and have slightly broken proportions. Also the humans are designed to look a little more monstrous, while the mutants are made to look cuter. And more! They paid so much attention to the visual look of the film and it shows.
I'm always a sucker for themes of found family.
Jackie Chan is in it and he is SO good! Seriously, I know he isn't usually known in the US for his acting skills, but he brings some serious heat here. His Splinter might just be my favorite character in the movie.
Ayo Edebri is April O'Neil and she's probably my favorite version of April.
It is just such a fun movie. It's like a teenager personified in film. It's silly and heartfelt and quirky and passionate and full of emotion and personality.
If action-comedy kind of things just aren't your jam, this probably won't change your mind on the genre. But if you're on the fence about this one I thoroughly recommend you give it a go.
2.
The Boy on the Heron
(2023)
—Animated Fantasy Adventure
A boy with a tragic past must make an important choice for his future when he discovers the entrance to a magical world.
I'll need to rewatch this one after I've read up on it some, because I'm pretty sure some of the themes were going over my head. But I was a rather underwhelmed. It tonally felt a lot like Spirited Away to me, just not as good.
Also I need an animator to watch it and tell me if I'm crazy or if the proportions are sometimes really weird? Like when they did a close-up of a face where a hand was in the shot it looked like the hand was HUGE?
3.
Angst
(1983)
—Horror Thriller
A man gets out of prison and almost immediately begins to act out his twisted fantasies on an unsuspecting family he comes across.
This one made me really uncomfortable. I realize that that was the point, but that still doesn't make me like it. I know some other Horror fans love it, but it definitely wasn't my jam.
4.*
Palm Springs
(2020)
—Sci-Fi Rom-Com
While attending a wedding two guests become stuck in a time loop and are forced to relive the day of the wedding day after day. In order to move on with their lives the two must battle against the nihilism of their situation and discover what it really means to be alive.
Those that know me know that I'm a sucker for a good time loop movie and this one is no exception. Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti have a really fun chemistry. And I enjoy the very Millennial take on the genre.

John Wick: Chapter 4
(2023)
—Action Adventure
John Wick discovers a way to get out from under the thumb of the council, but things get complicated when old friends are turned into enemies.
I know some people who love, love, love the John Wick movies and I wish I was one of them. I am typically a sucker for really well choreographed action movies, but I just cannot get into these. They just burn-out my brain with non-stop really long action scenes. It's too much action!
And I don't even really care about the stakes behind it all, so for me it's just like watching action for action's sake.
6.*
Exit Through the Gift Shop
(2010)
—Documentary
An eccentric French man's attempt at making a documentary on street art is turned on its head when one of the artists documents him instead.
I really liked this documentary when it came out and I've thought about it a lot over the years. All this discussion about AI art recently made me want to revisit it. The film asks some really interesting questions around the nature of art and of whether or not art made from copying other artists' styles and for purely commercial reasons (not self-expression) is still art.
7.
Jerry & Marge Go Large
(2022)
—Feel-good Bio-Pic
The dramatization of the true story of a married couple who discovered a loophole in their state lottery and proceeded to use it to help their small town.
It's the kind of middle-of-the road movie designed to be watched by families when they want to do something together but don't like the same things. The kind that when they're over will make everyone go, "Well that was nice, wasn't it?" and then immediately forget about it.
8.
Bunny Lake Is Missing
(1965)
—Mystery Thriller
A woman's young daughter goes missing while at school, but did she ever even have a daughter at all?
This movie is a wild ride. Plus it's one of those black & white movies that looks so crisp that you have to wonder why so many modern movies look so bad in comparison. My only big complaint is that the tension of its Thriller moments are often undercut by its wilder moments so it has you ping-ponging between two very different tones sometimes.
9.*
Winnie the Pooh
(2011)
—Animated Family Musical
Christopher Robin is missing and the gang of the Hundred Acre Woods is on a mission to save him...and also find what happened to Eeyore's tail.
Back in the day this movie made the mistake of releasing the same weekend as the last Harry Potter movie and subsequently got obliterated at the box office and most people just never saw it.
But it is so cute and funny and the animation is SUPERB! They aren't animating anything super crazy or flashy, so I think it flies under some radars, but it is so crisp! Like the animators in this are just so friggin' talented.
10.
Big Fish & Begonia
(2016)
—Animated Fantasy Adventure
A girl from a fantastical world under the sea puts everything on the line in order to save the soul of a young man who died while trying to save her life.
It's only been a couple months since I saw this and I don't think I could even properly explain the entire plot to you. Even while I was watching it I was having trouble following what exactly was going on.
It didn't help that I watched this after Winnie the Pooh, because the animation is a big step down in comparison. I get that they had a much smaller budget, but if you know you have a small budget you gotta plot accordingly or you're just gonna have to wind up cutting every corner you can find.
11.
Encanto
(2021)
—Animated Fantasy Musical
The only normal member of a magical family must go to extreme lengths to discover the secrets behind her family's powers.
I don't even know what to say. It's fine? The main character is great. There's some great animation to be found in here. But it feels like it was afraid of really committing to its themes and often plays it really safe.
Plus it is guilty of one of my many story pet peeves: when characters do some truly fucked up shit and then at the end they just say they're sorry and suddenly everything is perfect.
ESPECIALLY in movies for kids.
It is dangerous to teach kids that apologizing makes everything better, because it doesn't. It's a good first step, but if the person doesn't put in actual work into bettering themselves and making amends then apologies are just empty words. And far too many abusers and far too few victims know this.
12.
Suzume
(2022)
—Animated Fantasy Drama Adventure
A teenage girl inadvertently sets off a chain reaction that puts all of Japan at risk and embarks on a journey to set things right.
Considering it's directly dealing with the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake from 2011, it's impossible to judge it properly from an outsider perspective.
It's a very ambitious film and I've thought about it quite a bit since seeing it.
My issue is that it was just trying to do way too much in too little time. If this had been a mini series or something though? Holy shit, it would be so good in that format.
13.
Self Reliance
(2023)
—Comedy Thriller
A depressed loser is offered a bizarre opportunity: the chance to receive a million dollars if he's able to avoid being murdered by a squad of hitmen for a month.
I was intrigued in the first act, having an absolute ball in the second act, and then the third act really spoiled everything for me.
Jake Johnson and Anna Kendrick are delightful though. I can't take that away from them.

Just adding my two cents: May-haps the idea that Tim Drake “looks Asian” is because one or more of the artists (like Marcus To) is Asian themselves? Artists like to use themselves as references all the time. Regardless of an artists race, what if that was just entirely the art style??? Are you seriously going to judge the art style for that?
Hey I’m not gonna forget when the Asian artist (Jeff Matsuda) that worked on Jackie Chan’s Adventures also worked on The Batman (2004). So if you got a Wasian vibe from him there it’s literally because of the artist.
There was also that short graphic novel with Wasian Bruce Wayne, but it was just there. It was whatever, didn’t add anything. I don’t know if it erased anything, but it probably did. I personally thought it was whatever until the ending, in which I totally didn’t like, nor understand it’s meaning.
#To be clear#i don’t get racebending#regardless of who; because every identity has a cultural history#and because rich White American privilege are essential to their characters#there’s nothing about them that should be relatable to the masses#well i technically know some people who could relate to Tim’s class#Those freaking restocking asmr vids…#and I guess I know some 0.001% people but they all suck#oops i rambled#my two cents

TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Review - Do The Turtles Return With a Bang?
Get ready to join the beloved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in their latest animated escapade, "TMNT: Mutant Mayhem"! Directed by Jeff Rowe, this action-packed film bursts onto the screen with a visually stunning animation style. While some may draw comparisons to Sony's Spider-Verse films, "TMNT Mutant Mayhem" has its own signature flair, making it stand out in comparison to other animated films. This movie is a thrill as the turtles' begin their heroic journey to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they find themselves facing off against a mysterious crime syndicate and an army of menacing mutants. This movie is a fun adventure that's filled with pop cultural references, surprisingly contemporary slang, and an amazing rap music soundtrack that'll keep your head nodding from sta The Good: The animation in "TMNT: Mutant Mayhem" is really on point! Sure, some folks might compare it to the Spider-verse movies, but honestly, it's got its own unique visual flair that I totally dug. The movie is a colorful rollercoaster of action, and I was here for it! There are moments early in the film that show off the movie's dedication to having a great story. That great story helps ease you into the animation style and introduces us to our characters. The pop culture references and contemporary slang had me cracking up! The turtles using iPhones and even airdropping info with April was both hilarious and oddly relatable. I mean, who doesn't love a good tech-savvy turtle? The characters all look and sound great and do a good job of modernizing these old characters. They look good, they sound good, and they have great taste in music. The characters get great-looking updates to go along with their new animation, especially April O'Neil and Baxter Stockman. And can we talk about the music for a second? Specifically the rap music. It's the heart and soul of the movie! Gucci Mane and Bruno Mars bringing the beats in TMNT to make it Superfly! The entire soundtrack slaps, for real for real. Ice Cube's character Superfly barely seems like a villain and actually is really likable... until he goes full supervillain and changes everything. I really enjoyed his voicework as Superfly and what I presume he brought to the story with his dialogue delivery. There are so many good scenes with this character that it's hard to pick a favorite but if I HAD to then I'd say the whole bowling alley scene. Oh, and don't even get me started on that after-credit scene! Predictable? Maybe. But it's still everything you could hope for! It left me itching for more TMNT madness. The Bad: Now, let's address the elephant in the room - there is an action overload problem! There's so much happening on that screen, it's like a ninja hurricane! Don't blink, you'll miss some awesome moves... or even a sai to a dude's face! But hey, maybe a bit of toning down wouldn't hurt. There's a moment where Master Splinter, voiced by Jackie Chan, goes FULL Jackie Chan in the movie. Anyone familiar with Jackie Chan's action scenes knows how busy they can be. Add some squiggly line animation in the corner of the screen to go with the martial arts and its eyeball overload! Also, I couldn't help but wonder if I just forgot what actual 15-year-olds sound like? Some of these turtles were chattering like they were still in grade school! It's cool to be hip, but it can get irritating really fast to my millennial ears. And speaking of being "hip," the black slang and Gen Z speak were a hit-and-miss for me. I mean, it adds flavor to the dialogue, but sometimes it felt a tad forced. I just can't decide if it's cool or cringe! Lastly, why does the movie have to be so short? I could've used a solid extra 10 minutes of turtle time. More action, more laughs, and more character development, please! If the movie has momentum, keep going! I get wanting to end on a high note but this feels wrong. Final Verdict: "TMNT: Mutant Mayhem" is a wild and outrageously fun ride that will please die-hard fans and entertain newbies. It's got its quirks, but that's what makes it fun. It's very different than the previous TMNT entries so grab your pizza and hit the theaters when it drops on August 2, 2023! Cowabunga, dudes!
