WW I Part II
Women's fashion has less ornament and detail. Pockets were stictched on the exterior of women's skirts and jackets instead of hidden in seams. Jackets were worn longer over the hips and looser fitting with belts wrapped around the waist. Women's waists were no longer emphasized as they had been with corsetted dress. Women's skirts were shorter and showed their shoes.

Though we don't think of haute couture and war as having anything in common, in France the manufacturing and export of fashionable clothing for women helped to keep the economy going during World War I.

While Coco Chanel got her start during the great war, it was Paul Poiret who was the star of the era's high fashion. Referred to as the King of Fashion in America in the 1910s, Poiret is most famous for his designs influenced by Orientalism, Neoclassicism, and Surrealism; the kimono, the Turkish trouser, the slit skirt, and the famous lampshade dress. Mostly, he is remembered for his stance on women’s fashon and the simplification of the female silhouette. He dismissed the petticoat and the corset, as the trends shifted away from tailoring toward draping. He disliked the word fashion, opting instead to design women’s clothing solely as an expression of individuality. “Women are wrong for following one style,” he said.

On August 21st 1754 William Murdock, the Scottish engineer, was born.
Murdock invented coal-gas lighting, the first new form of lighting in the Industrial Age, and which remained the principal form of illumination until Edison’s invention of electric lighting 100-years later.
He was a close friend and associate of James Watt, who he met when he moved south to join Boulton & Watt, a partnership that was selling James Watt ’s new steam engines. During the job interview, Matthew Boulton noticed that Murdock was nervously handling a fine piece of woodwork that he had brought with him. Boulton recognized Murdock’s talent and hired him on the spot.
Soon Murdock began the experiments in gas lighting for which he is famous today. Murdock was the first to realize that gas was a more convenient energy source than coal, primarily because it could be piped and controlled more easily. Despite ridicule from his peers and the danger of gas explosions, Murdock Installed gaslighting in his house, using gas made from coal in his backyard and piped in through a hole in a window frame. Murdock went on to develop methods for manufacturing, storing, and purifying coal-g
Murdock’s employers were unenthusiastic about this sideline until they heard that a similar gaslighting system, made by Philippe Lebon, was being used in France. Boulton and Watt then asked Murdock to install gaslighting at their main factory in Birmingham in 1802, as part of England’s celebration of a temporary peace treaty with France. Soon the firm received its first commercial order to install gaslights at a cotton spinning factory. By 1806, Murdock had improved the odour of the coal-gas.
Meanwhile, Murdock had continued to apply his ingenuity to steam engine improvements, many of which were patented in 1799. He invented a new machine for boring cylinders and a better method for casting jacketed cylinders. Today, he is still known for inventing the slide valve, which injects and removes steam alternately from each end of the cylinder. Murdock also built the first model of an oscillating engine and the first free-standing steam engine.
Although Murdock eventually became a limited partner in Boulton & Watt, he remained essentially a hired hand throughout his career, rather than an independent businessman. Nevertheless, he earned great respect from many rivals who were wealthier and better educated.
In September 1830, in declining health at age 76, Murdoch's partnership with Boulton & Watt which began in 1810 came to an end, at which point he was receiving £1,000 per year. The reasons for this appear to be both the increasing unprofitability of Boulton and Watt and Murdoch's increasing ill health. Murdoch died on November 15th 1839, aged 85.
Murdock might be a lesser well known name than his boss and contemporary James Watt, but he is just as important figure, and should be recognised as such . In 1892 he celebrated more, a bust was unveiled in The National Wallace Monument of the engineer, there is also a bust in at St. Mary's Church, Handsworth. The town of Redruth has an Annual Murdoch Day in June. The 2007 event included a parade of schoolchildren with banners on the theme "Earth, Wind, Fire and Water" and the first public journey of a full-size, working reproduction of Murdoch's Steam Carriage.
The house he lived at in Redruth has been restored and preserved and is a listed building, there is also a primary school in Birmingham named after him. In 2019, he was inducted into the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame.

Persons of Interests Document
Heres something I've written based of the Zombie AU
//CW for some links to artwork with some blood in them
The last helicopter left the city at exactly 12:49 AM on the 10th of September. I don't know why she decided to stay. I asked her, I BEGGED her to go. Yet she stayed. Once she puts her foot down, she doesn't back down. She would remain with me even if it meant saying goodbye to her family.
First class tickets out of the city and into the safety of the military seemed like the best I could do for them. I figured they’d be safer outside than in the bunker right in the center of the city. That decision keeps me up at night. I wish I could tell myself that she doesnt know, but Jennifer is a lot smarter and observant than I ever gave her credit for. My only hope is the potential that they could’ve escaped and somehow made something for themselves out there. That's the only thing keeping their status as missing, and not deceased.
Jennifer’s ability to inspire people in desperate times shouldnt surprise me. People loved her, and they looked up to her for guidance and advice. When we started sending scavengers out, she shined as a leader. Amongst ex-soldiers, mercinaries, and former emergency services members, she won the pick for Chief of Security by a landslide. I know she is more than capable of handling herself, but I worry about her constantly. I guess I know what it was like to be in her shoes in the times before. Her status is alive. Should that change, I don't know if I'll be capable of documenting it.
Lucas’ fall into delusion was some of the hardest hitting of when we were still secluded from the outside. He had convinced himself that I had been too lenient, and that executing certain individuals who posed a threat would be beneficial to our isolated community. The fact that me killing him caused such a stir sent that theory to the grave along with him. Lucas’ status is deceased. It was the first life I had taken since the outbreak. I’ve killed many more people since, but it doesn't progress the community further. It just means less people that disagree with us and more blood on my hands.
Frances has been a great asset to the community as her pinpoint accuracy has saved many lives. The people and I owe her a great debt, but she shrugs it off as nothing. All she asks for in return is more ammunition. Oftentimes she acts as a scout in the city. Going in alone into the concrete jungle and bringing back important intel. In fact, she was the first one to encounter the Marshals. Current status is alive. One day I’ll find a way to repay her. Maybe I’ll look for her hat she lost a long time ago.
Some of our outer city manufacturers managed to find their way back. Whittaker kept his metalworkers alive long enough to make it to us from the radio signal we had sent out to our facilities. Not everyone made it back to us though. Cindy is currently missing at this time, but truth be told I don't think she couldn't have made it out there on her own.
As for Hawthorne? Its hard to say for certain but…
For a long time I was greatly concerned about Peyton or her gang managing to survive the outbreak, and launching an attack on us. As time passed the concern lessened, but I was always afraid that she would come to our gates and proceed to make this new life of mine a special kind of hell. That day never came, and Frances had become curious. Their compound was on the other side of the city, but that didn't seem to dissuade her. Frances’ report goes as follows:
“The place was abandoned, seemed like nobody had inhabited the place since the outbreak. Some kind of massacre took place. A bunch of skeletons were strewn about still wearing those stupid colored clothes Pb’s freaks liked to wear. I skulked around until I found her. A skeleton with its head detached lying in some command room. That faded purple jacket was unmistakable. No sign of Cat mask or that twitchy little shovel creep neither. Well, besides all the headless skeletons anyway.”
Pb, Peyton Beck, is deceased. I can sleep a little easier knowing that. Especially since I had nothing to do with it. Though, that still leaves Nelly and that big guy Jules uncertain. What are the odds they’re still out there? I don't like that uncertainty, but maybe without Peyton messing with their heads they can actually be reasoned with. Whatever the case may be…

Coco Chanel:
Coco Chanel is well-known for her timeless designs, signature suits, and little black dresses. She developed her first perfume in the 1920s and later introduced the Chanel suit and the little black dress, with a focus on designing garments that were more comfortable for women. She became a fashion star recognised for her basic yet classy ensembles mixed with wonderful accessories, such as many strands of pearls. Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born on August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. Her early years were far from glamorous. Chanel was placed in an orphanage by her father, a peddler, when she was 12 years old, following the death of her mother. Chanel was reared by nuns who taught her how to sew, which led to her life's profession. Her moniker stemmed from a very different job. During her brief singing career, Chanel was known as "Coco" at bars in Vichy and Moulins. Chanel met Etienne Balsan, who promised to help her establish a millinery company in Paris, when she was about 20 years old. She soon abandoned him in favour of one of his wealthy pals, Arthur "Boy" Capel. Both men played important roles in Chanel's first fashion endeavour. Chanel began selling hats in her first boutique on Paris's Rue Cambon in 1910. She then expanded her business to include stores in Deauville and Biarritz, as well as clothing manufacturing. On a chilly day, she fashioned a garment out of an old jersey for her first taste of fashion triumph. In response to the numerous inquiries about where she obtained the outfit, she volunteered to make one for them. "My wealth is founded on the old shirt I wore in Deauville because it was cold," she once told author Paul Morand. Chanel rose to prominence in the intellectual and artistic communities of Paris. She worked with Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso on garments for the Ballets Russes and his play Orphée.
Tumblr media
youtube
In the 1920s, Chanel elevated her booming firm to new heights. She created her debut perfume, Chanel No. 5, which was the first to contain a designer’s name. Perfume “is the invisible, memorable, ultimate accessory of fashion. . . . that signals your entrance and prolongs your departure,” Chanel once remarked. The scent was in reality also sponsored by department store owner Théophile Bader and industrialists Pierre and Paul Wertheimer, with Chanel forging a strong acquaintance with Pierre. A agreement was subsequently arranged where the Wertheimer corporation would take in 70 percent of Chanel No. 5 earnings for making the perfume at their plants, with Bader receiving 20 percent and Chanel herself only receiving 10 percent. Over the years, with No. 5 being a significant source of cash, she continually sued to have the terms of the arrangement renegotiated. In 1925, Chanel designed the now renowned Chanel suit with collarless jacket and well-fitted skirt. Her designs were groundbreaking for the time—borrowing features of men’s apparel and prioritising comfort above the limits of then-popular trends. She helped ladies wave goodbye to the days of corsets and other restricting clothes.

Denim
What is denim?
Denim is a stiff / sturdy cotton warp faced textile in which the weft passes under two or more warp threads. This twill weave creates a diagonal ribbed design that distinguishes it from typical cotton duck. denim was first produced in Nîmes, France.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Denim comes in a range of colours however the most common one is indigo in which the warp thread is dyed while the weft thread is left white. As a result of this warp faced twill weaving, one side of the fabric is predominantly coloured and the other white.
Denim is one of the most iconic fabrics in the world. It is popular across both national and cultural boundaries and with this the denim jean has become a symbol of American culture across the world.
The history of denim
The word “denim” comes from the French serge de Nimes , which refers to a particular type of fabric that was produced in Nimes, a town in France. Over time, this warp-faced cotton weave style became popular throughout the region, and this popularity spread into neighboring Italy.
The city of Genoa rapidly became the world’s biggest producer of serge de Nimes. Since the French name for Genoa is “ Genes ,” the name “jeans” stuck when this fabric gained renewed popularity during the American Gold Rush.
Gold miners liked the durability and repairability of denim-weave cotton, and though other dye colors were widely available in the American West, manufacturers like Levi Strauss continued using the indigo blue dye that Genoan fabric merchants originally resorted to out of necessity.
Denim fabric today
Denim fabric has remained in wide use in jeans since the 1850s. No other clothing item has endured within American culture like blue jeans, which makes that pair of Levi jeans in your closet something of a heritage artifact.
Over time, American textile producers started making other apparel items out of denim, and these days, you can even purchase home decor products made with this durable and aesthetically appealing fabric. While production of blue jeans was once limited to the United States, the late 20th-century manufacturing exodus saw the majority of denim production transfer overseas.
Denim fabric now has too many variations to list, and it has been mixed with other fabric and weave styles ad nauseam as designers have worked feverishly to develop the latest trends in denim fashion. All the same, traditional Levi 501s remain incredibly popular around the world, and a niche industry has emerged that revolves around “raw denim,” which is part of every hipster’s lingo book. Global interest in denim remains strong, and it’s likely that this weave will still be produced as long as cotton remains a major textile product.
How is denim made?
Cotton cultivation
...
2. Processing into yarn
...
3. Final Production
...
Tumblr media
There are a few stages that culminate in the production of finished denim fabric products:
Cotton cultivation
The denim production process begins with the cultivation of the cotton plant. As a protective measure, this plant develops a thick ball of fibers around its small black seeds as it grows, and these fibers can be collected and separated from their seeds to make fabric.
Processing into yarn
Cleaned cotton fibers are combed and made into long, thin strings. Then, they are spun into yarn using an industrial machine. Throughout this process, a variety of washes, dyes, or treatments may be applied that change the attributes of the finished denim product.
Final production
Once cotton yarn is produced and dyed, it is woven into the iconic warp-faced denim style. This fabric is generally produced in bolts that can be purchased by the yard and shaped into finished consumer products.
How denim is used?
For clothing
...
For accessories
...
For homeware
...
Tumblr media
This cotton product is used in several sectors:
Apparel
The majority of denim fabric is used in apparel. Examples of denim apparel items include:
Jeans
Skirts
Shirts
Blouses
Jackets
Vests
Accessories
Denim is also commonly used in accessories like:
Shoes
Belts
Purses
Hats
Homewares
As denim has become a fashion icon as well as a practical fabric, this textile has found its way into the homewares market in the following categories:
Drapes/curtains
Upholstery
Blankets/duvets
Pillows
Where is denim produced?
According to Statista, India is currently the world’s largest producer of cotton. This Asian nation is closely followed by the United States with China in third place. These statistics mark something of an upset in the global manufacturing order; mere years ago, China’s authoritarian regime was the world’s largest cotton producer by a wide margin, but geopolitics have shifted.
How much does denim cost?
Among the natural fabrics, cotton is one of the most inexpensive, and it is even comparable in price to cheap artificial fibers like polyester and rayon. It doesn’t cost that much extra to make cotton yarn into denim, which puts denim fabric in the middle range of fabric pricing.
Certain types of denim, however, can be quite expensive. Raw, organic denim, for instance, can cost dozens of dollars per yard, and in general, cotton products that were produced sustainably and ethically cost slightly more. Supporting good companies is worth the increased cost, however, and consumers are increasingly on the lookout for safe, organic textile products, which provides more profits in the long run.
What different types of denim fabric are there?
Over the years, quite a few forms of denim have been developed. Here’s some information on a few of the most popular options:
1. Raw denim
This type of denim has not been washed or treated. Generally, it is worn for six months to a year without washing to make sure it forms to the wearer’s body. Raw denim enthusiasts often resort to putting their jeans in the freezer overnight to kill off microbes and bacteria.
2. Sanforized denim
Most types of denim have been sanforized, which is the washing process that has resulted in modern denim fabric. While sanforized jeans are softer, they are also less durable, and they aren’t as personalizable as raw denim jeans.
3. Stretch denim
With this type of denim, cotton has been mixed with spandex or a similar material. The resulting fabric is stretchier than normal denim, so it is commonly used in form-fitting applications like skinny jeans.
4. Crushed denim
This type of denim features a weave that’s similar to velvet. It has a permanently wrinkled appearance that makes it appealing for jackets and skirts.
5. Selvedge denim
Selvedge denim has a fringe at the end, and this fabric is commonly used to make jackets.
6. Acid wash denim
This type of denim features an iconic mottled appearance. It’s made by washing raw denim in a strong acid that eats away at the dye.
7. Poly denim
The term “poly denim” is widely used to refer to denim products that are made with a mix of cotton, polyester, and any number of other artificial fibers. Along with polyester, materials like lyocell and nylon are sometimes added to cotton to make denim products. Some purists would say that poly denim is not “real” denim.
How does denim impact the environment?
A variety of factors can affect the way that denim production impacts the environment:
Materials used
As a natural fiber, cotton has the potential to be a non-polluting substance. Like all plant crops, however, corners are often cut to produce higher cotton yields with toxic pesticides and fertilizers.
Much of the denim on the market is contaminated with toxins that could harm your health. What’s more, using chemical fertilizers and petrochemicals in the cotton cultivation process poisons ecosystems and causes health complications in local plant, animal, and human populations.
Moreover, some “denim” products contain percentages of polyester, nylon, or other artificial textile materials. All textiles other than natural fabrics were created from petrochemicals or similarly artificial substances, and these materials release incredibly dangerous toxins into the environment. These toxins are often genotoxic or hormone disruptors, which causes multi-generation genetic damage similar to the mutations observed after exposure to nuclear radiation.
Manufacturing practices
Once the raw materials for denim reach the factory, they may be washed, treated, or exposed to any manner of chemical agents. During this process, human workers may be exposed to airborne or transdermal toxins, and the general rule for overseas labor is that human beings are treated as slaves by major manufacturing corporations to increase profits.
Focus on sustainability
To avoid the negative environmental impact that always results from keeping people in slave-like conditions, it’s necessary to choose manufacturers that focus on free trade and sustainability. A growing number of textile producers around the world are coming into harmony with their communities and nature, and Sewport is the best place to connect with the right textile producer for your next project.

Key Takeaways:
● Dominance of Asia-Pacific
Body Armor Market in the Asia-Pacific region held a significant market share of 34.5% in 2023. According to SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) statistics, seven countries in APAC experienced active armed conflicts in 2019. Among these, Afghanistan is a major internationalized civil war country. This has significantly affected the Body Armor Market growth in a positive direction. Moreover, high-intensity border and subnational armed conflicts between India and Pakistan such as the suicidal attack in Kashmir in 2019 have brought a major growth in safety concerns of armed personnel. This tends to drive the Body Armor Market growth in the forecast period. The United States being the ultimate power in the global military sector is bound to invest large amounts in this sector. According to SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) statistics, there has been a huge investment in armed forces equipment by the US Government. This was recorded as $731.7 billion in 2019 which accounts for about 90% of North American investments. According to SIPRI, the US is analyzed to be the largest exporter of Military equipment which is recorded to constitute 36% of global share. This has brought significant growth in the Body armor market at the global level.
● Soft Armor type segment held the largest market share
Soft Armor product type holds the highest market share of 45% in 2023 with a CAGR of 7.8% in the forecast period.  Soft body armor is protective gear that is used to protect the body against small hand-gun ammunition, sharp objects and low-velocity ballistic threats. The growing demand for civil, security and other such applications will drive this market. Soft body armor is much lighter, more comfortable and more flexible than hard body armor. It helps absorb and mitigate much of the energy, reducing the potential for injury. The U.S. National Institute of Justice has established minimum performance stands for soft body armor such as Level IIA typically soft body armor is designed to stop a .9mm FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) round at a speed of 1165 feet per second ft/s and a .40 S&W FMJ at 1065 ft/s. The rising demand from consumers, security as well as law enforcement applications will drive the soft armor market.
● Civilian Sector Segment to Hold Largest Market Share
Civilian sector is expected to witness the highest CAGR of 7.7% in the forecast period. Majority of law-enforcement body armor and helmets are designed to defeat handgun threats and also provide additional protection during car accidents and other assaults on police officers.  However, when it comes to Civilian armor, these are typically focused on Level IIA and Level III armor. While the complex laws in various countries can act as a deterrent, the demand from civilians, especially journalists, high-profile targets, etc. will continue to be a major opportunity for market growth. Due to the technological advancements nowadays, bulletproof vests are designed using synthetic fibers that have extremely high strength, are resistant and flexible. As such manufacturers opt for materials that are tough but lightweight, though not indifferent from those used in military body armor. Growth of commercial sector demand from hospitals/EMS, journalists, high profile targets (politicians/lawyers/judges), CEOs, and jewelry store/pawn shop owners others are driving the usage of body armor for safety purposes. Growth of technologically advanced fibers and commercial applications is anticipated to fuel the market growth in the forecast period.

● Rising Safety Concerns among Armed Personnel and Law Enforcement
The market for Body Armor is likely to benefit enormously from the rising safety concerns of armed forces and law enforcement officers around various parts of the world, primarily in the U.S. In many leading economies such as the U.S., China, India, Japan and Others, the Defense Department of these countries has shown massive investments to provide their troops with all necessary safety equipment. Governmental bodies of these countries have been promoting the sacrifices done by their armed forces which tend to raise their safety concerns. For instance, Due to the rise in safety concerns of armed forces, the US Government through the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), aims to provide tested certification for different body armor suitable for different LEVELS such as LEVEL I, LEVEL IIA and others. The NIJ is currently working on a revision with additional test methods particularly for ballistics protection. This could help identify outdated armor being utilized in the Law Enforcement and Security sectors which will lead to a drive to replace the armor based on new standards. This initiative tends to drive the market growth of hard Body Armor in the forecast period.
● Increasing Number of Armed Personnel
With the increasing number of armed personnel in leading economies, there has been a significant growth in the demand for body armor. Due to the rising number of armed personnel, the procurement of body armor has risen in recent years. This trend is expected to continue over the next few years as well. Moreover, in recent years, due to the increase in armed conflicts, there has been a huge number of deployments of troops in war-prone areas. This has brought the pace of the increase of armed personnel in these areas. This increasing number of armed personnel has further driven the Body Armor Market growth. These rising armed personnel in this region will further uplift the demand for Body armor which will pace its market growth in the forecast period.
● Potential Shortage of Upgraded Body Armor Supply
With the increasing technological advancements, there has been a huge demand for upgraded body armors that offer high protection with comfort. On the other hand, this increasing demand has brought an adequate supply of these armors in the global market. This has brought a major challenge in the market growth of Body armor in the forecast period. Moreover, with the increasing war conflicts, there has been a shortage of body armor for the armed forces. This combined with lower military spending due to Covid-18 along with supply chain interference will further restrain the Body Armor Market growth. This is particularly the case in the U.S., where following a significant increase in police spending on body armor, gas masks and other crowd control solutions due to civil unrest, there is a projected shortage of these products available in the market. These long delays are expected to continue in the short term in the U.S. but are expected to be alleviated in the long term once the demand dies down. However, such civil unrest-driven demand could drive shortages across other countries as well in the future.
