Total wishes: 96
In this doc, the seasons are colour coded, I made a "Wishes per Character" list, the rules and guidelines I set for myself are laid out, and there's more interesting and specific graphs.
More specific lists below (Who said it, how it was said, and what episode it was said in).
Rise of the snakes
(Snakebit) Wu: I wish.
(Once Bitten, Twice Shy) Cole: I wish I had a sister like you.
(All of Nothing) Kai: Ugh. I wish I could see me now, because you all just got Kai'd.
Legacy of the Green Ninja
(Pirates vs Ninja) Garmadon: I wish they were here to show these scaly idiots how it's done.
(Double Trouble) Garmadon: Ninja, today I wish for you to finally meet your match.
(Ninjaball Run) Ed: Oh, we're fine, son. Just wish I could say the same for the old jalopy.
(Ninjaball Run) Garmadon: I wish to rip open Ninjago and make an insurmountable obstacle that they can never surpass!
(Child's Play) Garmadon: I wish to create the power to make you young.
(Wrong Place, Wrong Time) Garmadon: I wish I could go back in time, and make it so the ninja were never formed in the first place!
Tournament of Elements
(Only One Can Remain) Karlof: Karlof wish he never sign up for this.
(Versus) Neuro: I wish I could've done more.
(Spy for a Spy) Karlof: Karlof wish he had friend like that.
(The Day of the Dragon) Karlof: Karlof wish he could do that.
(The Greatest Fear of All) Skylor: I wish I still had the power to change.
(The Corridor of Elders) Kai: I wish I could say we're not facing an army unlike we've ever seen, but we have, and we know what they're capable of.
Possession
(Ghost Story) Jay: Uh, I wish Lloyd was here for that.
(The Crooked Path) Ronin: I wish it never had to come to this.
(Grave Danger Jay: Oh, I wish we had the Sword right about now.
Skybound
(Infamous) Nya: Aw, I wish we could, but duty calls.
(Infamous) Clouse: I wish for my Book of Spells.
(Infamous) Clouse: I wish...I wish to become mortal again.
(Infamous) Nadakhan: I wish it could be over soon, but right now, you're probably thinking about your last wish.
(Infamous) Clouse: I-I wish it all to go away!
(Public Enemy Number One) Misako: I wish to speak to someone in charge!
(Public Enemy Number One) Misako: I wish I hadn't said anything in the first place!
(Misfortune Rising) Clancee: I really wish he'd warn us when he did that.
(Misfortune Rising) Jay: I wish I never saw my future.
(Misfortune Rising) Jay: Then I wish...I wish I wasn't born in a junkyard.
(Misfortune Rising) Jay: I wish I wasn't poor anymore and could give Nya everything she wants.
(Misfortune Rising) Nadakhan: I wish.
(Misfortune Rising) Jay: I just wish I wasn't alone with you.
(Misfortune Rising) Lloyd: I wish Wu were here to guide us.
(Misfortune Rising) Kai: The only thing I wish is for you to take me back.
(Misfortune Rising) Kai: I wish you could take me back
(Misfortune Rising) Kai: I wish for all of it to go away!
(On a Wish and a Prayer) Zane: For my first wish, I wish that you'll not twist my words, nor find a loophole, but understand the true intentions of the words that I speak, and carry out your will as I've thoroughly instructed.
(On a Wish and a Prayer) Zane: I wish...I wish for it all to go away!
(On a Wish and a Prayer) Flintlocke: We're acquiring so much land, I wish we had more hands.
(Wishmasters) Dareth: I wish I could tell you the mission is gonna be simple. It's not.
(Wishmasters) Cole: I wish Vengestone didn't stop our powers, but made them stronger.
(Wishmasters) Nya: I wish someone told me we were gonna use wishes!
(Wishmasters) Lloyd: I wish you were a lousy shot!
(Wishmasters) Cole: I wish he didn't have that sword.
(Wishmasters) Lloyd: I wish I was wise like Wu.
(Wishmasters) Cole: I wish us all out of here.
(Wishmasters) Nya: I really wish you hadn't said that, Cole.
(Wishmasters) Nya: Then I wish those clouds would stop us!
(Wishmasters) Lloyd: I wish for a sword!
(Wishmasters) Clancee: I-I wish them away!
(The Last Resort) Clancee: Oh, I wish...I wish...I wish I could see where she is right now.
(The Last Resort) Nya: I just wish I had a say in it.
(The Last Resort) Nya: And I wish we didn't have a lovestruck Djinn chasing us to the ends of Ninjago.
(Operation Land Ho!) Jay: I wish Nadakhan wasn't a Djinn! I wish Nadakhan wasn't a Djinn!
(The Way Back) Nadakhan: I wish you wouldn't say that!
(The Way Back) Nadakhan: I wish to deal with you later.
(The Way Back) Nadakhan: I wish I had those odds.
(The Way Back) Nadakhan: I wish the swords away.
(The Way Back) Clancee: I wish you'd listen to me for once!
(The Way Back) Nadakhan: I wish...for my love to return.
(The Way Back) Nadakhan: I wish you gone!
(The Way Back) Nadakhan: I wish you still! (directed at Zane)
(The Way Back) Nadakhan: I wish you still. (directed at Lloyd)
(The Way Back) Jay: I wish you had taken my hand.
The Hands of Time
(The Hands of Time) Acronix: Oh, how I wish my brother were here to see this.
(The Hands of Time) Nya: Sometimes I wish I was still Samurai X instead of a ninja.
(The Hatching) Jay: Kinda wish we hadn't busted him.
(A Time of Traitors) Kai: I wish I could ask you what this is.
(A Time of Traitors) Kai: Actually, I wish I could ask you anything.
(A Time of Traitors) Jay: Wish we had the rest of the team here to help.
(Secrets Discovered) Misako: I wish Wu could have seen this.
Sons of Garmadon
(The Jade Princess) Lloyd: I wish I knew.
March of the Oni
(The Darkness Comes) Pixal: I wish the others could see this.
Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu
(Questing for Quests) Cole: I wish I understood what you just said, but I don't.
(Never Trust a Human) Aspheera: I wish to hear you say the words.
(Under Siege) Jay: Oh, I wish Lloyd and the others were here.
(Fire Maker) Kai: I just wish I still had my powers.
(Fire Maker) Kai: I just wish there was something I could do.
(Krag's Lament) Jay: I wish Kai was here.
(A Fragile Hope) Kataru: I wish I could give you some hope, but there is none in this place.
Master of the Mountain
(The Worst Rescue Ever) Vania: I wish I could go with you.
(Queen of the Munce) Murtessa: I wish you to be my king, for even though you have tiny arms and ugly human face, you have a stout heart and are a mighty warrior!
(The Son of Lilly) Vania: I wish you could stay.
Seabound
(Nyad) Nya: I wish we had more time, but we never seem to get a break.
Crystalized
(A Painful Promise) Aspheera: Wish I could help, but your ninja never came back.
(The Benefit of Grief) Dareth: I wish I were a Nindroid.
(The Benefit of Grief) Sally: I wish I could turn off my emotion meter.
(Christofern) Garmadon: I wish to understand it better.
(Christofern) Garmadon: I wish to see if there is any goodness in me.
(An Issue of Trust) Nya: I just wish we had better news.
Dragons Rising s1
(Beyond Madness) Lloyd: I only wish Master Wu was here to properly train them.
(Return to Imperium) Sora: I wish I was anywhere but here.
(The Last Djinn) Sora: I wish for you to help us kick these Howlers in their butts!
(The Last Djinn) Nya: I wish for the Howlers to be gone!
(The Call it Doom) Nya: I wish we could locate the missing Dragon Energy Core.
(Land of Lost Things) Sora: I wish I was.
(Land of Lost Things) Sora: I wish I didn't remember mine.

I remember this
It inspired me to make a doc about how different everything could be if they didn't. Still one of my favourite of my docs to be honest. I'm always baffled when I rewatch that scene lmao
Rewatching and literally.

Guess who’s baaa-aaaack~!
It’s your favorite reporter, Normster! Or Jennster, I’m not picky! Io’s back, tell a friend. Not bothering you all, am I? Heh!
That Perdition report did NOT blow over well with the older generation, but hey, people get stuck in their ways! Stick it to ‘em! Anyway- Nothing-to-Fearers (that can’t be our name) around my age appreciated the clue-in, so I gotta thank Norm again!
But I wouldn’t be here just to thank you, you know me! Pencil and paper in hand (or in this case, Google Docs) and waiting for a new story!
So! This site of yours down here - Besides dealing with those guys over in Arizona, you probably know about this town outside of the ‘weird town names’ Wikipedia page, right? There’s plenty of weird shit out here, the name’s very ironic. I’ve seen it to believe it. You’re right, I’m a lil’ bit new here, so hey! Any local history I should know about?
- Io Mason (She/They), KLRT 108.6
People should know about what they’re getting into if they live/move near Perdition, Arizona, even if people don’t want to talk about it.
I haven’t been to Nothing-To-Fear, myself, but I know of it. An Uncanny Valley community in Nevada, “uncanny valley” here being a term for small extranormal communities that pop up across the country. Usually the entire population is extranormal in the some way or at least knows about it. Glamours are typically totally optional if not outright frowned upon. I remember the motto for Vender’s Gamble, Tennessee being “come as you are,” and they mean it. Typically they’re small and rural, and thus kind of …underprivileged, but there’s exceptions like Jackdaw in Washington State. Very rich planned community there.
I’m trying to choose my words carefully. A lot of uncanny valley communities are insular, and have a distrust or dislike of outsiders and especially the Office. Sometimes this is because of unfortunate events in history, and in those cases I don’t blame them.
In Nothing-To-Fear’s case, I don’t see a lot in my records to indicate we’ve done much aside from our nearby site in Arizona to keep an eye on Perdition. We’ve had a hands-off policy with a lot of uncanny valleys lately, so that’s not super surprising.
Hmm. Aren’t you guys the ones that were founded by six clones of the same person in the 50’s?

Did you ever mess with my brain at all? I don’t remember you doing that, but then again maybe you messed with my memories too <3
Either way, I’m shaking and lying in bed and i cannot stop thinking about you!!! Really, this is the worst thing you’ve done in our whole rivalry!!!
[Attached is an image of Jackdaw. Their hair is messed up, and they are missing their polo shirt, so it is just them in their medical tape. They wear a startled expression as they lie in a rather pathetic and upsetting excuse of a bed, clutching a collection of medical equipment to their chest. It’s recognizable as Mal’s, however the metal is stained with god knows what—something not there the last time he saw it.]
Fix this, doc!! You’re the expert !!! <3
- Jackdaw (@j-ckdaw)
No actually, I have my own code of honor. Messing with the mind is against it.
You would manage to phuck up my equipment, wouldn't you? I'll clean it up and deal with you later...

Thanks so much for the tag, @jackdaw-sprite! That was very sweet of you!
RULES: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
We would be here forever if I included all the ideas I wrote down in my journal, so I'm going to keep it to my Google Docs and the notes on my phone. I'm also excluding all documents that only have brainstorming or outlines in them because, again, we'd be here forever. That leaves me with these bad bois:
Daniel Vladimir Fenton
#53: Danny Transforms in His Sleep
Untitled Document
#4: An Earthly Analogy
Phic Phight 2023: Danny's Dedder Than Usual
#2: Smoke and Mirrors
#3: Fire Alarm
#36: Fangs
Clockwork has discovered how to create pocket dimensions and is creating one now
Clockwork Insists That He Is Danny's Parent
Seeing the lack of uniformity in all these titles has got my eyes twitching. lol
I did cheat just a little bit -- "An Earthly Analogy," "Smoke and Mirrors" and "Fire Alarm" are actually all on the same document -- but I figured I'd separate them because for some ungodly reason, the actual title of that document is "#1: Clockwork Explains Why No One Can Find the Elsewhereness," and no one would ever pick that because I published that phic already. lmao
For extra fun, if anyone's interested in this, I actually have a whole 'nother account full of story ideas for my World of Warcraft characters. Hit me up if you're interested, and I'll make another post with those.
I'm going to keep my tag list small. I'd like to see @thesilentbard, @phantomtwitch and @lance-thunder-reporting-live do this. :3 Sorry if any of you have been tagged already -- please link me to your post(s) if you have!

Just Another Day
Words: 2733
Warnings: Major Character Death (referenced deaths to canonical TUE timeline deaths), Graphic Depictions of Violence (one near the end).
Prompt used: Jackdaw Sprite -A day in the life of Valerie Gray, whether in the main timeline, the TUE timeline, or another. (TUE timeline used)
AO3 Link!
Valerie cursed as the next stitch was applied.
“Careful!” She snapped.
“Uh-uh, you don’t get to say that, Val.” Kwan said, peering at her momentarily over the rim of his glasses.
“You know what I mean…” she grumbled, eyeing the jagged gash on her arm, irritation evident in her eyes. This, of all the dumb reasons she’s gotten hurt, has got to be the dumbest of the dumb.
Valerie Gray, the Red Huntress of Amity Park, the last bastion of humanity’s hope, had run into a tree on her hoverboard. Not even running away from anything! She’d just been having fun!
Mercifully, no one had seen her fall nor her entrance into Kwan’s office. She did have a reputation to keep up after all!
“Are you sure you don’t want any local anesthetic?” Kwan asked when Valerie again hissed at the next stitch.
Determinedly, she shook her head, short brown curls bouncing around her face. “Axion’s ability to synthesize materials we need out of materials we have is still lagging behind. I can handle it, doc.”
Kwan sighed but did not push. He knew she was right. Years under this dome with naught but a wasteland surrounding them was catching up on their resources. They’d been lucky when the plans Jack and Maddie Fenton had never gotten around to publishing was found when the house had been cleared. It gave them the ability to alter the genetic make up of materials and chemicals - break them down to their bases and reform them into things that were currently needed. But Amity’s population had continued to grow, the resource strain had increased. No one was hurting for anything, of course not, and likely wouldn’t ever be, but there was still doubt. There was still fear that eventually the labs would fail and their only options would be to starve in safety or be slaughtered beyond the wall.
Val’s eyes roamed around the room she was in, pulling her mind off the repetitive pain of the stitches. Her eyes settled on the plaque behind Kwan. If you’d told her, before all this happened, when ghosts were just a nuisance, that Kwan Ishiyama would become a doctor, she’d have laughed. Not that being a doctor meant much anymore, but still. Only twenty two and already a doctor, with a half-assed education brought forth by fear, the knowledge that whatever was not taught to this next generation would be lost to time.
But Kwan was one of very few medical personnel left. Medicine wasn’t easy, even when it was only a fraction of what it should be. She shook her head slightly and continued to look around. Beyond that, there wasn’t much in the room. This was his private office, not a part of the clinic patients usually saw, but the two of them had an understanding.
Valerie would be a ghost hunting bad ass, Kwan would tend to whatever wounds she got while being said ghost hunting bad ass.
A chair and a desk sat along one wall, bookshelves along another. Blood blossoms rested in a flower pot nearby. She idly noted that the desk was positioned in a way that would have his back to the window. Not that she could blame him - the only view afforded to this room was the apocalypse through a green tint.
“Alright, that should do it, but it is going to scar pretty badly, Red.” Kwan said, pulling latex gloves from his hands and discarding all of the tainted material into a nearby recycler, to be sent to Axion for repurposing.
“Oh no. A scar. Whatever shall I do?” Valerie said monotonously, rolling her eyes.
“Maybe not crash into a tree going 125 miles per hour and then fall down the equivalent of three floors?” Kwan shot back, a smirk pulling at his lips.
The familiar look pulled at Valerie’s heart strings. Eight years. How could so much change in eight years? How could Kwan have the same laid back, goofy look stitching half her arm back together as he’d had whenever someone told a stupid joke?
“I make no promises,” Valerie said, heading over to his window and popping it open.
“You really shouldn’t fly with your arm like that.”
“Do you really think I won’t?”
“Not a chance - it’s just a waste of breath.” Kwan admitted, watching as she latched the window so it was all the way open. Valerie just laughed as she fell from the window, free falling for several stories before summoning her sled to her feet. She wasn’t sure when she’d become an adrenaline junky, but when your life is constantly at risk from the devil himself, dying just held an aura of an approaching inevitability. Might as well have fun with whatever life she had left, right?
Valerie rose high into the sky, as high as she could get without going outside the shields. She sat down on her sled, legs to either side, studying the sprawl beneath her, the cars flitting around as if they too were ghosts immune to gravity’s tether. But they were slower today, the volume of vehicles half what it was. They all knew what day it was. It was the anniversary of the ending and he would come soon, as he had the past seven years. The Huntress eyed the sun in the sky, estimating how much longer was left until he arrived. He always came at sundown - a few hours off yet.
Nodding to herself, she pulled the communications module up from her suit. Static filled the screen for a moment before her father appeared. He smiled at her, but he was weary. They’d all aged too quickly. They’d all given too much - her father giving more than most but not as much as some. An eyepatch covered his right eye, the left sleeve of his shirt too limp, as there was no arm beneath it.
Sometimes, Valerie blamed herself for what her father had suffered, how he’d been targeted. After all, Valerie herself had been the one to tell him all about her father’s genius ability, when she’d been unknowingly dating the world’s executioner. Maybe if she hadn’t said all of that, she would’ve been the target of the attack and not her father.
The day had been a miracle and a travesty. They’d finally gotten the shield big enough and stable enough to enclose the entire city, but it had required work on the exterior portions of the poles - outside safety. Nine workers had left to do the job, Valerie and her father included. Five never returned home. Three critically injured. Valerie the only one who hadn’t required some sort of surgery or amputation.
The Grays spoke briefly, Damon instructing her which poles to check today. Only five of them. He reminded her to return home before the sun got too low. She reminded him she would do no such thing. The banter was familiar - she knew he’d always try to protect her before anyone, he knew she’d fight everything thrown at them to keep their home, their people safe.
She flew to each of the poles, checking their structural integrity and the energy levels as she did. It was a delicate balance - make sure they were only taking in so much energy, putting out less, making sure the shield was evenly solid, no weak points, no chinks in their armor.
After sending a quick message to her father letting him know everything was okay, Valerie turned and made her way to where he would be within the hour. As always, her heart tightened painfully in her chest as she approached this part of the city, sat off to the side and feeling far more haunted than Amity had ever felt when the ghosts came. The grass was dull and brown, trees had lost all leaves and their branches twisted painfully into each other. Silence permeated in a way that simply didn’t feel natural.
Valerie touched down to the ground, summoning the sled back into her suit. She pressed a hand against the nearby rock, running fingers along the grooves.
When everything had first gone wrong, when reality had slapped all of them as hard as it could, there’d been panic in the beginning when the shield went up. How would they survive being cut off from the world? How long would there even be a world to be cut from?
So they’d rationed resources. But the dead still lingered, their bodies lacking a place to rest. At least none of them had came back. It felt wrong, though, to do a mass grave, to bury loved ones and members of their community in unmarked graves. So, somehow, some bureaucrat had decided to simply use the rubble from the fallen buildings. They’d had plenty, after all. Plenty of corpses and plenty of destroyed buildings.
Quietly, cautious to not disturb the dead’s silence, she brushed away some fallen leaves, revealing the name inscribed.
Dash Baxter
August 27, 1993 to August 26, 2008
Valerie bit harshly into her lip as the memory surfaced. That date of death was etched into more than half of these headstones.
It was just a normal day. No one had remembered what had happened on August 26th the year before. The Foleys and Mansons had left Amity Park, after all. There wasn’t really anyone to truly mourn the lives lost that day, to bother to remember.
And then Phantom had shown up, the first sighting of him in over a year. She first saw him at the school, but rumors held that he had been seen near the Fentons home. Valerie would never forget the icy tingle of fear that assaulted her spine, seeing Phantom. An odd reaction, one she’d never had before around the ghost. They’d fought against each other for their own lives - or so she thought at the time - but she’d never feared him, never felt this dread coil in her stomach.
He had simply…appeared, in the English classroom, sitting in an empty seat. And he looked wrong. His tanned skin had morphed into a sickly blue, white hair that had always moved with the wind looked more like fire than hair. But the biggest thing had been his face. Not a major change or anything of the sort - well, except the whole blue thin - but simply the look on his face. At the time, Valerie hadn’t had words to describe it, the small smile on Phantom’s face. But now she knew what that look had been. Sadism. The look of a mind broken and bent too far. Of a person ready to raze the world to the ground simply because he could.
It had been evil. Pure, unaltered, unfiltered evil.
“What are we studying?” He’d asked, head tilting to the side like a confused puppy may, but the madness didn’t leave his face, didn’t stop burning in his eyes.
Ms. Jordans, the new teacher, had merely gaped at him. She’d been new to Amity Park upon taking the job, but she’d adapted to the ghosts fairly well. But Phantom was legend, was presumed dead. Double dead. Whatever dead was for a ghost. His kindness and desire to protect was lauded in the city, much to Valerie’s anger. Ms. Jordans must’ve been quiet for too long, though, because Phantom spoke again. “Oh, did I miss roll call? The name’s Fenton. Danny Fenton.”
“Excuse me?” Valerie had nearly shrieked.
Phantom turned his gaze to her and she felt naked as he bored his eyes into hers. “C’mon, Valerie. The rest of class may be full of idiots who can’t tell an ecto gun from a dishwasher, but you’re bright. Danny Fenton? Danny Phantom? I barely even tried to hide it.”
Valerie’s stomach had turned, the lunch from earlier trying to force its way out as the revelation settled. Phantom cocked his head to the other side, lips still pulled in a cruel grin. Valerie was briefly reminded of a predator. “Danny?” She had asked. Her mouth had gone so try, then. She felt she was trying to choke out sand instead of words.
“Well, I was Danny Fenton. He’s dead now. Just like everyone who ever loved him.” Phantom’s voice was calm and light.
“Fenton is… dead?” Dash had asked.
The smile had fallen from Phantom’s face as he’d turned to the jock. “Dash Baxter. I’d forgotten you existed,” he had said, standing up from the seat and leisurely walking towards Dash’s desk. “Yes, Fenton is dead. He went quickly, at least, along with my pesky remnants of humanity. You, however, won’t be so lucky.” He’d said, baring sharp teeth in a snarling grin, throwing his hand out towards Valerie and catching her in a web of ectoplasm that had taken far too long to escape from. Whatever had happened, Phantom had been made stronger for it.
The class had fled, leaving Valerie the only witness to Dash’s brutal death. She’d never seen so much blood, never considered how many pieces the human body could be ripped into. Never realized how long it could take a human to die, especially when his wounds had been protected from bleeding by ectoplasm coating him. His screams had haunted her for a long time, after. She’d ended up picking pieces of him out of her hair.
Phantom had gone on a rampage after that. Buildings had been devastated. He’d killed people with his bare hands, murdered them by making the buildings collapse with victims still inside. Valerie had eventually escaped and bested Phantom, though not without suffering a lot of injuries. He’d been holding back, before. He’d always been holding back. But he never would again, never pull his punches.
“Happy anniversary,” he’d cooed at her. “See you next year.”
He’d flown off after that. It wouldn’t be for several more days what anniversary he meant. The anniversary of the explosion.
The world had slowly ended after that. No one believed in ghosts, after all. No one had any way to stop Phantom. And he’d burned the world down. Maybe there were villages or small towns left, somewhere. But Amity didn’t know. There was no communication from other places anymore. Not for a long time.
“Valerie?” She heard in front of her. She lifted her head and removed her hand from Dash’s grave. Her heart skipped a few beats at what she saw. Black haired, blue-eyed Danny Fenton, all grown up now, looking all the part of someone concerned for another.
“I’m not that dumb, Phantom.” She hissed, narrowing her eyes. As soon as the words were out, ‘Danny’s’ face morphed into a too large smile, too many sharp teeth.
“Ah, well, worth a try.” He said, two lights moving across him and leaving the Phantom she now knew in his place. Tall and broad shouldered, hair made of white flames, the insignia still upon his chest in a mockery of what he had once been. “I thought I’d get at least a second or two out of you! Do you like my new trick?” He laughed, a sound that set every human instinct of ‘you’re prey now, run’ she had.
“Get out of here.” She stated, pulling an ecto gun from her hip and blasting it. The shot went through the shield and struck the ghost in the chest, though he didn’t even move.
“As you wish.” He said, dipping his head towards her, a smile on his face like this was a joke only he knew the punch line to. “But, know this,” he stepped closer to the shield, holding his hand out so it hovered centimeters above the shield’s surface. “My power only continues to grow. I will get in there, eventually. This world is mine now, and Amity has been a dark blemish upon my world for too long.”
“You killed the half of you that could get through this, remember? No matter what, you’ll always be a ghost and you can’t get through.”
The grin again, the one she was so sick of seeing. “I will. And I will destroy everything with you at my side. And when nothing remains, when I have torn every human apart molecule by molecule, I’ll make it so much worse for you. It is inevitable.”

what do you like about Carlos? (jackdaw) ( grdhgfyg my questions are basic because I do not know much about wtnv but don’t mind being spoilt)
FAIR WARNING: this is, like, really long? it is five pages long and that's on 11pt Arial in google docs, where I had to copy and paste it so I could fix paragraph spacing so it would post. Also, I like, legit cried while writing this? So there is that also. like thank you for the blorbo talking enabling but also i do not know if you fully grasp what youve unleashed. idk if i fully know what youve unleashed
Because what don't I like about Carlos? He is my chief blorbo. He is the Guy I think the most about. I'm a little bit beyond just blorbo thoughts about him.
Okay let's break this down a little bit 'cause there's, to put it simply, a lot. Like, fifteen thousand words and counting of fic a lot? Also, I'm gonna be getting into, like, super recent stuff and also It Devours! here so just heads up on that
So. Carlos. Carlos shakes up the entire status quo, helps put the world back together, and becomes a critical element of Night Vale. That's on a narrative level. I'm gonna start with that because that's easier for me to talk about and also won't get me called out quite as quickly!
Carlos is a driving force in the narrative, in the world. Carlos shows up in town at the very start of the podcast, says he is here to study the most scientifically fascinating place in the U.S., and proceeds to uproot every single bit of Night Vale's centuries-long status quo. Carlos shows up and turns the entire universe on its head, at least in Night Vale. If I'm going to talk about how powerful, exactly, Carlos's impact is, I need to talk about Cecil. Of course I have to talk about Cecil.
Cecil announces, on live radio, that he fell in love with Carlos immediately. Cecil instantly attaches his attention to Carlos. I talked about this a little bit more in the Night Vale essay (over here) but Cecil is vital for the continued functioning of Night Vale. In mundane terms, Cecil on the radio serves as a giver of instructions and updates and ways to stay safe in this unbelievably dangerous town. In a less mundane sense, he's the Voice of Night Vale, which is an actual title, and sort of... represents his place as the center of Night Vale's community (which contains that more mundane element) and also as the center of this weird little pocket universe Night Vale is stuck in for the first five years at least. Because Huntokar loves Night Vale and Huntokar loves Cecil and Huntokar is a god and a god's love can be a dangerous thing.
But Cecil falls in love with Carlos. Carlos, who is a scientist, who deals in observation and acknowledgement and recording information and learning from it all. Things which Night Vale, a town with a very tenuous grip on its own reality, is innately allergic to. Night Vale is built upon the necessity of ignorance and denial for survival and continued existence. It depends on Cecil, the Voice of Night Vale, not changing, not growing, not looking, not for real. And he falls in love with a scientist, and he changes.
Narratively, it's absolutely insane how much power Carlos holds. Given the rules of the universe, Carlos is incredibly powerful. In Night Vale, perception is reality and acknowledgement becomes a threat to the powers that be. If it were anyone except Carlos, there is absolutely no way that any of the enforcement entities in town would let him get away with even a little bit of what he's able to. But Cecil loves him. I fully ascribe to the idea that Carlos's miraculous rescue and survival in One Year Later is because of Cecil, and Cecil refusing to accept that Carlos was dead. Cecil is powerful. And he's been protecting Carlos, in ways he might not even realize. Which means that Carlos is free to acknowledge Night Vale's weirdness, and because perception is reality in Night Vale, it changes for him.
I'll get back to this more later, but you see this a lot with the University of What It Is. If anything, that's what the UOWII arc is about. It's been a thesis since at least Who's A Good Boy? and Cecil wandering through the ruins of Night Vale, announcing that he must bear witness, even though he is sure his mic is not broadcasting to anyone. Perception is reality and acknowledgement is what is keeping Night Vale together post-Matryoshka and what kept it from toppling into the abyss to begin with. Carlos becomes unbelievably powerful in this way, in this understanding of the power of observation and recording. (I promise we will get back to the UOWII but I want to spend actual time on that and I have other stuff I wanna talk about first.)
Carlos does not seem to realize this, though, not for a while. I personally don't think that it really clicks for Carlos entirely what perception is reality means in the case of Night Vale until somewhere around Toast. I do not think it really clicks for Carlos how important he has become here, how much of an impact he has had, until reality itself starts to fall apart. The key of Carlos, and Carlos's impact, and what makes this Night Vale the True Night Vale as opposed to any of the other Night Vales we learn about, is the presence of Carlos. Every Night Vale has a Cecil, because the existence of Night Vale hinges on the existence of Cecil. There is only one Carlos, though.
Carlos only exists in this one reality. Carlos only exists in this one version of Night Vale. And we see how much that has changed things! We see it in The Missing Sky, when we hear the miniature city's Cecil and how sad he is. This Cecil is despondent, and cannot see any reason to keep going. He is deep, deep in a terrible dissociative depression, reporting on a pointless war and a missing sky and a god he believes has abandoned them. We see it in Cal, with the version of Cecil who never met Carlos, either, and Cal himself. The simple, stated question of "do you have a girlfriend yet?" sets all the scene we need for Cal. This Cecil does not have a Carlos, and he does not even have the safety in the knowledge that Night Vale is a safe place for him to announce, loudly, to the whole world, that he loves another man. And it's... depressing.
The podcast is from Cecil's point of view, so we get most of this information from listening to Cecil talk. We don't really see Carlos's perspective often, if ever, if not filtered through the way he interacts with Cecil. For that, I take us now to It Devours! because oh boy. It is very clear that Carlos loves Cecil very very deeply. If only from what we get in voicemails and phone calls. I haven't listened to it, but my understanding is that he's very clear about his love for Cecil in Condos, too. And we get it from his actions in Taking Off/Review and the way he picks up everything he's been doing for a year in the desert otherworld to go back to Night Vale and to Cecil because he loves Cecil and wants that to be his home.
Except, it wasn't a year. It was ten. And this information is revealed right alongside Carlos cares about the people he loves more than anything and the book-long element of Carlos trying, despite the wishes of City Council, to investigate the desert otherworld. I have written so much about the desert otherworld, and I will write more, because holy shit. Holy shit. I'm not going to tell you what it is because it made me almost scream for real in the very early hours of the morning when I heard it, but the information that is revealed in the very end of It Devours! is heartbreaking. Carlos cares about the people he loves more than anything, and it brings him right to the brink of destruction, because of how much he cares about Cecil and this new family he has found through Cecil. And throughout It Devours! you get such a clear idea of just how much Carlos loves Cecil, how much knowing Cecil has changed Carlos right back.
And, like, the autistic coding. It is blatant. It is obvious. It is much harder to overlook it than to notice it. It is intentional. We're getting to the part here where I might be calling myself out a little bit but like. The way that it weaves into how he expresses his love for Cecil and for Night Vale. It's the way that it is channeled through his science, and how his science helps him make sense of the world. I love him, and I love how he is written in such a way that his science has become the lens through which he navigates the world and this step-by-step justification of his existence. The way that this plays into the ongoing belongingness element of his arc throughout the podcast.
He starts as an outsider, and he stays an outsider, and just as he's starting to think he might not be an outsider, well. The desert otherworld happens. And I've definitely worked through a lot of these thoughts already but that's what it comes down to! I cannot help but read his belongingness arc as innately tied into how he is written as autistic because that's just what it's like to grow up autistic! You don't belong anywhere, or at least that's what you're told. If you're a lucky one, that message isn't stated explicitly, but it's there. Of course he's cautious with his assertion he belongs in Night Vale! It would be a wonder if he wasn't!
So he does not know how important he is until he is forced to see it and then as soon as he is forced to see it it becomes his whole world. And every time I think about how there is only one Carlos across every single Night Vale in existence (or tentative non-existence), I have to think about how he believed he should not return to Night Vale because the door had shut for him, and how this led to spending a full ten years in a lonely and empty desert otherworld while Cecil fell apart back in Night Vale. I think about Cecil's sobbed I am still holding the trophy in One Year Later, and I think about Carlos grounds me in Delta and I think about how, in The Promise of Time, his joy at the end was for himself and Carlos, and I think about his panicked I have to call Carlos as soon as the warrant goes out in The Heist Pt. 3. And because of that... Night Vale attaches its reality to Carlos, too.
Night Vale cannot exist as it is now without both of them. There is only one version of Carlos across every single version of Night Vale. Carlos makes Night Vale what it becomes, because he witnesses. He witnesses and he records it all and he investigates and he understands. Besides Cecil, I do not think there is a single person in town other than Carlos who truly understands Night Vale. He understands it through scientific observation and archival and experimentation. Carlos pokes the boundaries to see how they'll react to him but he never crosses them, never breaks them. He does not feel the need to explain why Night Vale is the way it is now, because it simply is. He is observing the laws of this town (both legal and physical) and he respects them and nods as he passes.
Which brings us back to the University of What It Is. I said we'd come back to this, didn't I? I don't know how much I can say that doesn't lead to speculative conclusions here, because the UOWII arc isn't finished at the time of writing, but there are some things that have been laid out clearly. Janet Lubelle does not stop for anything or anyone. Janet Lubelle is what the UOWII considers to be the height of a successful scientist. Carlos used to also be considered a successful scientist, and then he came to Night Vale, and he lost whatever quality it was that the UOWII considered a qualifier of success.
Janet Lubelle does not respect the rules of Night Vale. It's very, very easy to see Dr. Lubelle as a foil for Carlos, especially since they came from the same institution. Only, Dr. Lubelle tramples over those boundaries, those unspoken (and, arguably, spoken) rules that make Night Vale what it is. She is here for an explanation for everything and she will not stop until all the mystery, all the wonder, is gone. And she calls it science.
And if you go back far enough, Carlos talked like this too! He was looking for an explanation to Night Vale's temporal weirdness, an explanation for its weird seismic activity, an explanation for the house that does not exist. But he adapted, and he learned, and he observed, and he took his time and did not simply enforce his way of things onto the world without its permission.
Carlos feels like a love letter to science and the scientific way of observing the world and falling further in love with it through that scientific inquiry. I'm going to get a little, uh, sappy and personal here, so fair warning, but I likely have that reading because that's been how I've lived my whole life. I was talking to someone even just today about how, when I was little, my dad would take us out onto the back patio and we would set things on fire and see what we could burn to make the fire different colors.
I've grown up with parents who deeply, truly love science. My mom has a physics degree. My dad has a math one. He still texts my family group chat every day to inform us it is pi time at 3:14. Every day. So maybe it's that, and maybe it's growing up with an understanding of the world that is rooted in scientific inquiry and questions and exploration, but Carlos feels like a love letter to science to me.
Carlos comes in and he turns the entire world on its head as he does it and he finds, at the end of the day, that he loves Night Vale. He loves Night Vale because it's so weird. It's the most scientifically fascinating place in the U.S. and this becomes his way of saying I love you. I want to understand you. Science, through Carlos, is its own sort of faith in the world and the way it is all put together, how everything connects. And Night Vale loves him back for it. He'll poke and prod at the edges but he will never cross them if he knows crossing will do harm, even if he does not fully understand why, because following an ever-growing series of whys is what science is about. Not having one single explanation at the end of the day.
Carlos's exploration of Night Vale changes it, because it must change, everything must change eventually in order to continue to exist, and Carlos does what he can to help it not fall apart completely as it does. Carlos becomes more Night Vale as time progresses, and Night Vale lets more of Carlos in, until he is so enshrined in it that it is just his life. Night Vale lets him rest, and here, in this weird, weird town that is so incredibly hard to find, he finally finds a place he belongs. I don't know what isn't to love about that.

Headcanon: Much like Grey Wing being Silverpelt and Clear Sky being the daytime sky, Jackdaw's Cry and Falling Feather are the Sun and the Moon respectively.
Falling Feather is the Moon. She is shown to have an affinity for water, drawn to its allure but never fully commiting to it like a Riverclan cat would, much like the Moon has influence on the oceans yet is not in full control. She is seen to be conflicted in many of her decisions, especially those regarding leaving Jackdaw's Cry as she is and keeps close to him, but stays firm in her choices; relating to the Moon, its light is that of the Sun's and it is always seen as half of the cycle of the two, but it has it's own changes (the moon phase cycle) and moves of it's own accord rather than anything related to the Sun. She is calm and level-headed, but stubborn in her choices and firm in her beliefs and wants. She fits the Moon due to the way she handles her choices and relationships.
Jackdaw's Cry is the Sun. He is shown to dislike water and prefers prey found usually during daylight, and is even part of a hunting patrol to catch a hawk out of the air and is even later commented to be able to jump the highest out of the traveling cats. This comes into play later when he's shown to easily jump high flamed during a forest fire. He is passionate and confident, constantly forming strong opinions on topics and speaking his mind, yet he also knows when too much is too much and can quickly calm down. He fits the Sun due to his bright and passionate personality and preferences.
Of course, there's probably better evidence for this, but I just skimmed the wiki after coming up with the idea.

Morning, Doc.
Stole more of your stuff. Your tools make for good wing sharpeners.
[Attached is an image of them brandishing a scalpel. Crusted onto the blade is blood—old enough to have formed dry scabs and clots, but that blood wasn't there when you last saw it.]
Good luck getting ‘em back. Looked like you liked the things, they’re awfully worn. Maybe we can trade when I pop in tonight?
…come on, I know how much you hate my stupid smug-fuckin’ face when you do your freak shit to me.
- Sincerely, Jackdaw
*Gasp* You sly little bitch! And that was my favorite one! Y'know, I was thinking about giving you cat ears next time, but no. Not anymore! The nerve of some people I swear!
P. S.- Keep it up and I'll make sure you can't have a smug face anymore! >;)
