@trajektoria: how about an AU Scott and Reyes meeting somewhere before coming to Andromeda

Scott had mixed feelings about being back on Arcturus. It was great to be away from Relay 202 and everything it represented to him. But being back here… he thought maybe it was just him, how his CO seemed more stern and brusque with him.

But with damned near everyone giving him either a wide berth or the cold shoulder, he could definitely say that it wasn’t him. He’d messaged Sara as he tried to find a bar that wasn’t rammed full of Alliance personnel. She’d soothe his nerves, call him an idiot for being jittery and then ask him if he realised how much messages to who knew where in what cluster cost.

God, he really hoped was was just being an idiot and reading into things too much. Because this… this felt too much like the axe waiting to fall.

He’d been walking for a bit, when a blue and gold neon sign caught his eye. This, he definitely didn’t recall from his last trip here. Blue Anubis… he eyed the sign in the window before looking past it. Perfect, the place was practically a ghost town. He headed in, settling at the bar and ordering a pint of draft.

“Surely you’d rather drink something better than that piss.”

Scott looked over to see a dark haired man at the end of the bar, half facing him. There was a knowing smile to his mouth and a look in his eyes that Scott couldn’t quite place. But it made his heartbeat pick up and his mouth suddenly dry. His glass was placed in front of him and Scott took a sip before shrugged.

“And paint stripper that tastes like smoke and a peat bog is better?”

The man laughed as he slid off his stool and sauntered over to hop on one closer. “Mouthy and handsome. My day is finally looking up.”

“I’m Scott. You are?”

“Whoever you want me to be.”

It was such a trite old line. But the way this man delivered it, so full of freeing possibilities and daring, Scott couldn’t help but smile, his pulse turning frantic as he played along. He took in the hair sleek and neatly styled, the knowning look to the man’s gaze and the sure, confident way he held himself…

“Anubis sounds good. This place is practically a tomb and yet here you are, like you’re guarding it.”

Scott had to admit, he liked the sound of the man’s laughter, smooth and melodious. He leaned in closer, warmth and spicy cologne wrapping around Scott like pure intoxication.

“I’d like to keep this place free of Alliance jackals,” those hazel eyes were suddenly sharp and appraising. “So far, so good.”

“I’m Alliance.” Scott frowned as his stomach twisted at those words.

“Then why do you look so unsure of yourself,” the man took a long sip of his drink, tongue darting out to catch a little bit from the corner of his mouth. “I think you’re someone who is usually very sure of themselves.”

The way the man’s eyes raked over him left nothing to the imagination and Scott figured why fight the lust that was slowly pooling in his belly.

“I don’t know how long I’m stationed here for.” Scott admitted.

“I’m here awaiting a grand adventure. It will take a few lifetimes…” the man shrugged. “But what’s a few lifetimes of waiting to carve out a kingdom?”

“You sure you’re not a poet?” Scott mused as he shifted in closer.

The man smiled. “Definitely not.”

“Seriously, I don’t even know your name.”  Scott tried once more, because he had every intention of leaving the bar with this stranger.

“Anubis, Reyes, whichever you prefer handsome. I’m not that picky.”

A smile came to that mouth again and Scott just had to lean in and kiss him. He really hoped Reyes’ place was close by.

“You look like you’re waiting for someone.”

600 years later, it wasn’t a voice Scott ever though he would hear again.  He turned as casually as he could. The same hair, the same eyes, the same mouth… Seriously, what were the chances? The bartender brought up two glasses, quickly filling them.

The recognition flickered in those hazel eyes and Scott smiled and shrugged. “A few lifetimes it seems,” he took the offered glass. “I got time for a drink.”

They quaffed it down and then,

“Shena. But you can call me Reyes. I hate code names.”

Scott wondered what exactly had happened in that 600 year gap, in the few lifetimes it took for them to meet again in Andromeda. He hoped he got the chance to find out.

Big Cat Facts!

Today we went to Jukani, a big cat sanctuary. Our guide was Bert (who grew up on a game farm with cheetahs in the house) and he was the most knowledgeable dude, who taught us so much shit about cats. Here are the notes I took. If you don’t care about lions/tigers/etc, don’t read anymore bc this is literally all this post is, but it’s super interesting so maybe keep reading!

All cats fall in the species of feline. Housecats are those that meow and have no “fingerprint” or marking on their ears. Housecats include your everyday cat, but also cheetahs, pumas, caracals. Anything with a fingerprint and roars is a panther- jaguars, lions, tigers, etc.

Bengal tiger- 202 white tigers lefts in the world in captivity, 80% dead on birth bc so much inbreeding with the ones left.

This tiger is 80% blind at 1/3 of its life bc if inbreeding.

Tigers are wet cats, stay in the shade, swim everyday and go to bathroom there in the water.

Last white Tiger killed in india in 1953

Number one human killer.

Snow leopard is not a leopard, can’t roar, subspecies of tiger.

Tigers and lions are very opposite.

Tigers are allergic to their partners and basically hate each other, they do quick “hit and run” mating and then go back to ignoring each other, antisocial cat, male tries to kill babies when born bc they’ll grow up to try to kill him, female takes care of them as single mom and keeps male away, tigers sleep very little bc its always patrolling.

Lions protect family w life, sleeps most of the time, never leaves family, dry cat, poop on land and don’t bury to warn off other lions.

Tiger whisker goes for $22,500 and they have 50 on their face. High value is reason for extinction.

Spotted hyena is 95% successful in live kills, tigers and lions are 30%

Caracal- most successful killing cat- can run them down, also kills in trees, and can get birds in the air bc they can jump 90 degrees and hunts day and night. Kills 6 times it’s body weight (lions and tigers do 3 times). Kills for sport so very destructive. Can be tamed, along w cheetah (better than your average housecat), but will destroy your house (attack, kill, and skin your furniture). They eat feathers and can’t eat skin so they skin all their kill. Most cats eat skin to not develop ulcers but this cat can’t do that. Nature of a dog, stays w it’s human. Caracal is the logo for the Israeli woman’s troop. They use these cats to get rid of birds in airports.

White lions- only in SA. Can be beige to Snow White. Endangered cat, worth a lot.

Black back jackal- canine but not dog family.

Leopards- ghosts, uncontrollable and untamable. Only cat in no circus in the world in 130 years bc its so dangerous. Only cat that takes food up the tree. Killed giraffe 300kg baby and dragged it up a tree even though itself weighs under 100kg. Only cat that comes head first down the tree. Doing best in the world- from Asia. Breaks the neck to kill and kicks the animals insides out at the same time

Jaguar- South American. Bites the brain, quick kill. There are black leopards and black jaguars, but no black panther, so you have to specify. Has strongest bite in the world, 950kg pressure.

Cats stalk, dogs charge.

Cheetahs don’t jump.

Primates and horse are sweet meat, all others are salty. Bengal tigers and lions will eat humans in exchange for zebra or antelope bc still sweet.

Puma- first wave of puberty is 14 months nonstop, hormones changing every 20 mins. Then ovulates twice in a year- 17-50 days. Over 40 names for it in USA- mountain lion, cougar, etc. 28 names for them in SA. Puma concolor (scientific name)- One brown color- took on color of pine needles after millions of years of living in pines. Argentinian rugby team called Pumas but have picture logo of black jaguar.

Housecats can’t roar, only purr and opposite is true. All panthers can roar but can’t meow. Roar from stomach, meow from throat

Cheetah- shoulders loose for running, stick up behind the head. 0-120km in 2 seconds within 12-15 meters. .03% of the time do they touch the soil, mostly airborne, claws are only there to help them run. Shoulder separates from spine to help it turn fast. Hunts during the day, early morning and dusk, bc it doesn’t have to hide and hunt due to speed, but lions will follow it, kill it and take its food, so it hunts when they’re asleep. Can be tamed as a housecat, so friendly and cuddly.

Honey badger- toughest in world, turns 90 degrees in its own skin to get out of bites, skin is thick and female lions can’t bite through it. Don’t eat honey and not badger, immune to all spider scorpion and snake venom. Elephants part for them.

Lions- only cat that has bush on end of tail, comes from the fathers mane. Mane is not for defense or fighting, but an expression of how much testosterone running in the lion. Bigger the mane, higher the testosterone levels. Highest aggressive cat. Breaks down fences, doesn’t hop them. 30 year life span for female, man 6 years bc of fighting to protect family. Females are monogamous. Males will kill another male to take their wives and babies. When a female is widowed, will go into heat within 3 days. Has biggest kills, bc families to feed are so big. On every continent except Australia, bc that land mass broke away before lions migrated there. Females hunt bc there are so many in a pride, easier work. Females sexually ready at 4, dad will fuck her and have incest baby. Female will raise them but an outside male will come in and kill the babies so the incest line is dead. Females will be sisters but never related to males. Male will make sure all females eat, does physical inspection of the food. Only cat that makes sure their women fed. Males always eat first. 600kg pressure bite

Zebras has stripes to blend together and so lion can’t pick out the individual prey to attack. After baby zebra is born, mom turns around so stripes can imprint on the calf and baby knows who mom is.

Cheetahs are originally from the USA, got so fast from chasing down the fastest know gazelle- american prawnhorn. Went over Bering Strait and left America when prawnhorn went extinct.

Puma is 2nd fastest, long distance bouncer, and can do cliffs, so stayed in America for mountain goats after that gazelle went extinct.

Polar bears can absorb UV rays through hollow part of white fur to stay warm. Now dying of cancer, too much radiation bc of climate change. Hair is white for camo and heat absorption.

Hyenas give birth through penis (females have one too) and without umbilical cord. Baby is born and ready for war, eyes open and run within 3 days and full teeth. They are prehistoric old, had to fight dinosaurs, have 4 fingers, same as dinosaurs. Eats animals alive.

 4. Balphakram National Park - Meghalaya

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Close to Mgahinga National Park is Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where you may even have an even better chance of seeing the rare mountain gorilla, as seven groups are habituated there. As it's name "impenetrable" implies, this park is not quite accessible as Mgahinga, but its well worth the effort of going there.

Like Mgahinga, Bwindi which was gazetted in 1991, is one of the country's newest national parks. It covers 331 square kilometers which makes it the third largest forested area in Uganda and lies on the Democratic Republic of Congo border, adjacent to Parc National des Virungas of Democratic Republic of Congo. Situated on the edge of the western Rift Valley on the highest block of the Rukiga highlands, its one of the largest natural forests in East Africa containing both montane and lowland forest vegetation.

Bwindi ranges in altitude between 1,160 and 2,607 meters. The highlands on which the park sits consist of old (Precambrian) rock, much eroded and altered. Like Mgahinga, much of the vegetation is typically tropical rainforest, with a very dense thick undergrowth hence the name "impenetrable". Make no mistake about it tacking gorillas in this area is strenuous work.

Bwindi's 120 plus  species of mammals make it one of the richest ecosystems in Africa. Primates are particularly abundant and include the mountain gorilla, chimpanzee, blue monkey, red-tailed monkey, L'Hoest's monkey, black and white colobus monkey, baboon, potto and  Demidoff's galago. Other mammals present include the bush pig, giant forest hog, clawless otter, golden cat, side stripped jackal and many species of bats and rodents.

Bird lovers will take delight in the fact that some 346 species are found there of which 184 are typical forest species. In addition Bwindi is home to more than 14 species of snakes , 27 species of frogs and toads, six chameleons and 14 Lizards, skinks and Geckos. You're also bound to notice the incredible variety of butterflies in the park: more than 202 species ave been identified so far. If  you're more into flora than fauna, you'll be interested to note that there are more than 163 species of trees in Bwindi, 10 of which occur nowhere else in Uganda and 16 of which show a very limited distribution elsewhere in Uganda.

Getting there

Bwindi is located in the South Western part of Uganda with Buhoma from where the gorilla is viewing is conducted is 120 kilometers from Kabale district (through Bulema and Butogota) , 550 kilometers from Kampala city and 267 kilometers from Mbarara district.

When to go

Like Mgahinga, Bwindi National Park is a rainforest and thus is wet all year round, although the course of the rains increase during the seasons of April - May and September - October. Ideally the best time to travel would be during the dry seasons of May - August and December - February.

Where to stay

There is a wide array of accommodation facilities on offer at Bwindi National Park ranging from budget camps to luxurious lodges depending on the Gorilla group that you would like to track.

At Buhoma, visitors can stay in simple bandas or camps using their own tents in a community run campsite.

How much does a Gorilla permit cost?

The prices of Gorilla permits in Uganda are normally fixed and vary depending on the time of the year you wish to track the Gorillas. Peak season Gorilla permits cost 600 USD for foreign non-residents and 400 USD for foreign East African residents. During the Off Peak season which covers the months of April, May and November; Gorilla permits cost 450 USD.

Mountain Gorilla Tracking is the major attraction in Bwindi National Park. There are seven groups and these include;

 Mubare Group: Habituated in 1991, this group is found in the Buhoma area of the park

Rushegura Group:  This group is found in the Buhoma area

Habiyanja Group: Habituated in 1997, this group is found in the Buhoma area

Mishaya Group: This is is found in the Rushaga area and was originally part of the Nshongi group

Nshongi Group: This group is found in the Rushaga region and consists of 25 gorillas

Nkuringo Group: This group comprised of 19 gorillas and is found in the Nkuringo area of Bwindi

Bitukura Group: This group is found in the Ruhija area

Hiking

As in Mgahinga, there are other things to see in Buhoma area of Bwindi beside the gorillas. There are a number of hiking trails in the park, but visitors must arrange a day in advance for a guide to accompany them. Three trails begin in Buhoma, including the Muyanga River Trail which is an ideal short walk for visitors with little time to spare. Alternatively, try the Waterfall Trail, which follows the Muyanga River upstream as it tumbles down the steep slopes south-east of Buhoma, flowing through a series of waterfalls before entering the camp area. The Rushuura Trail will afford you some fantastic views across the western Rift Valley floor with the Democratic Republic of Congo's Park National des Virungas providing a particularly spectacular back drop.

Buhoma is an ideal place from which to watch primates and birds. You'll see many monkeys along the roads, around the periphery of the park, and at the forest edge. This is also the richest site for birds in the park, with some 190 species on record. Of particular interest are the Kiva ground thrush, white-bellied robin chat, red-throated alethe, collared apalis, short tailed warbler, yellow-eyed black fly catcher, Rwenzori Batis, blue-headed sunbird, strange weaver , and Shelley's crimsonwing.

The Mubwindi swamp in the centre of the park is a three hour hike from Ruhija. The scenic walk passes through a beautiful forest and affords fine views of Virunga volcanoes.
