Dragon by Night! (wwbn au)

Part 1: designs!!

Okay so, my friend has been subjected to so many ramblings and updates on these drawings and i think she’s sick of it by now lol so i’m putting all of it here as a starting point for everything else i’m gonna post eventually (bloodstone manor stuff, the bloodstone, jacks curse, etc)

for reference, this au focuses on how things would work if Jack, Elsa, and Ted were a part of the Wings of Fire universe (really great fantasy book series!! i’d recommend it if you’re okay with reading something meant for 11-15 [???] year olds).

To start things off, let’s look at how the trio would look on Pyrrhia!

I decided to make Ted half mudwing and half leafwing. In the books, a group of mudwings aka ‘sibs’ has a role called a ‘bigwings’, which is assigned to the largest of the unit. They protect their siblings in battle and in life, and i thought that was fitting for Ted. Leafwings are very entwined with the plant life in the poison jungle on Pantala (aka the lost continent). They have control over the way things grow and also have extensive knowledge on the local flora, which just screamed Ted to me. I kept most of the mudwing traits while including a few leafwing details such as the speckled scales and webbed back scales, along with the twisted horns.

Elsa is a skywing. In the books, they’re characterised by their immense combat knowledge and skill, and are theorised to be the original dragon tribe. they are also very headstrong and their loyalty can sway away from their family, which i thought fit her fairly well. Also i feel like monster hunters in general fit the theme, and i have some ideas for bloodstone manor involving the sky kingdom!! I made Elsa look like a typical skywing - deep red scales, slim face, pale wings. And I also gave her the bloodstone, which i’ll mention later.

Jack was a tough one for me. Originally, i wanted to make him fully nightwing or maybe even a silkwing to symbolise his change from man to wolf, but silkwings change permanently, so i feel like that wouldn’t work properly. Instead, i opted to make him half nightwing and half rainwing. In the books, nightwings are known as highly mysterious, rarely interacting with the other tribes - supposedly to keep their magic and power for themselves (until like… the fourth book, then it all goes to hell. but that’s unrelated), and are linked to both animus dragons and mind readers. I thought this fit well for jack with his ‘creature of the night’ vibe, and also nightwings have starry skies on their wings and i thought that was neat. Rainwings are also rare outside of their territory - the jungle next to the secret nightwing kingdom (also until the fourth book - yay dragon wars!!). they have the ability to change the colour of their scales to show their emotions, camouflage, and also to try and look pretty in some cases. I thought this wouod be nice for Jack in the case of his werewolf form. If rainwings don’t get enough sun their colours are dull and ‘boring’, and since the wolf wouldn’t technically see the sun he’d change to a duller, darker dragon. ALSO!! they can spit venom, which i just thought was neat. imagine walking through the jungle one night and a mostly camouflaged rainwing swings down from a tree branch and unhinges it’s jaw, spitting venom at you until your skin burns and melts. Anyway, I made jacks resting colour to be green and gave him mostly rainwing traits - the frills on his jaw, the prehensile tail, the longer talons; and then gave him nightwing horns and back spikes, the stars on his wings, and the head shape. i also made his smaller scales a similar colour to his makeup in the special since that’s not really a dragon thing?? like at all?? ALSO (AGAIN) rainwing was a whole aren’t huge on fighting, they spend most of their time relaxing in the sun and the thought of using their venom to harm other dragons is completely horrifying to them, this of course seemed very jack-esque to me so yeah! here’s both of his colours (normal and cursed form, which is really just altered colours and different behavior like i mentioned previously)

anyway i hope you guys like this so far and i hope it’s making at least a little sense, but if it’s not i am happy to explain and there will be more posts about this in the future!! i have a bunch of ideas, like my notes app is full of dot points to expand on eventually 😗‼️‼️

Humans have guns! Dragons do not. Any dragon that would want to hurt humans would be too prideful in their natural weapons to use a gun anyway, even if their claws were small enough.

The humans do have horses to ride, many dragons just have them as pets because they’re cute/so that their human friends can keep up if they’re not comfortable riding dragons.

Si'Ha Nova - A shining icewing who caught the eye of the mysterious Traveler! As a dragon, she has frost breath due to the chosen dragon species, as well as honing some hidden powers of her own!

The Traveler - A particularly charming and incredibly powerful nightwing! Because of his chosen dragon species, he maintains his power of opening portals, as well as fire breathing (and perhaps even future sight.. we'll see >:3)

Wanderlust - The son of The Traveler and Si'Ha Nova, being a mix of icewing and nightwing genetics! Due to this gene mix, he carries the ability to expel a sort of fog as opposed to frost breath or fire, as well as The Traveler's portal opening powers (and, yes, maybe even future sight, muahahaha)!

Night Swan - A conspiring rainwing-skywing mix (with extremely minimal visible skywing features) whom possesses the ability to create a rather interesting smokescreen instead of fire given her majority rainwing genetics, since rainwings can't breathe fire. It's possible that she may be able to create venom-tainted smokescreens as well, in order to disorient opponents! Night Swan intentionally changes her scales to be a much darker color to reflect her villain persona, refusing to present her true colors no matter what (help this woman she needs THERAPY).

Jack Rose - The sky-rain hybrid son of Night Swan, Jack Rose possesses more skywing genetics than his mother, and thus as a result is able to breathe fire! Unfortunately he is unable to spew venom, but he may carry the ability to create smokescreens like his mother! His silver streak can change colors in accordance with his mood, with gold often symbolizing when he's truly happy (ex: while envisioning himself performing), silver indicating somewhat of a neutral mood, and a rather dark shade of pink symbolizing sadness/despair.

Jack

so Jack is a Skywing elf mage-in-training because the power set of Sky mages seems to match Jack's powers the closest. They create gusts of wind, storms, can fly, breathe ice breaths, and frost touches. It was a tough choice between that or a Moonshadow elf, what with the whole invisibility thing, but i just can't imagine Jack not being able to fly :/

And even though most Skywing elves dont have wings, i gave him the wings because vibes and because i can

i did add some moon opal charms to his staff though, so he can do some small moon spells

Toothless

i wanted to adjust some of the details to Toothless's design because i didn't want it to be a 1-to-1 of his design in HTTYD. I noticed the dragons in Xadia all have snouts, horns, and muscled forelegs, and i tried to incorporate some of that to Toothless. With a narrower head and longer legs and more hand like claws.

I added more prominent scales, nose plates (like the storm dragons in TDP) and tried to add more horns to spots on his legs and wings.

I also made Toothless a lot bigger than he is in the HTTYD universe because those Xadian dragons?? Excuse me?? Even a common one is still pretty huge!

There's also a dragon that exists in the Dragon Prince universe called a Midnight Dragon, and it's connected to the Moon Arcanum! They're said to have pitch black scales and are sensitive to light, so i thought it was fitting for Toothless. There weren't any pictures of the dragon tho so i kinda just made the design as i went.

Hiccup

i tried using costume designs from both the first two movies, with the vest, the belts, and the pant pattern.

colors took me longer to figure out, because i wanted to have some red (like in RttE) along with the greens and browns. Overall though im happy with how it turned out!

I think Hiccup would be the son of Commander or General Stoic in the Katolis army some years before or during the events of The Dragon Prince/Mystery of Aaravos.

These designs are for early in the story, before Hiccup loses his leg and when he meets Toothless for the first time. Definitely thinking that him and his village are known for their handling of dragons and elves in the region and then Hiccup shoots Toothless down just like in the movie. But as they become friends, Jack finds them and misunderstands the situation and thinks Hiccup is going to kill Toothless.

So that'll be fun >:)

Ok more stuff to add (either stuff that got eaten last time or just new stuff)

-Pantalan tribes have a second pair of eyes and no pupils.

-Sky and many pre-volcano Nightwings “walk” on their wings instead of their front legs pterodactyl-style (which are notably pretty shrimpy in comparison to those of most other tribes). While volcano Nightwings still walk using their front legs, some still subconsciously “crawl” with their wings while they walk.

-Skywings have a large cassowary-like claw on their back legs that they use for close-range combat.

-Pantala tribes have some sort of third pair of walking limbs. Whether that’s straight up a third pair of legs or if maybe their second pair of wings can do double duty like Skywings I don’t know.

-Leafwings can be somewhat sustained by the photosynthesis they perform through the chlorophyll in their scales. They still need to eat, but as long as they have water and sunlight, they can last a little longer or eat smaller meals than other tribes of their size.

-“Flamesilk” glows initially when produced due to some sort of chemical reaction that produces light and heat, but can glow again by absorbing light (like those plastic stars you stick on your ceiling when your a kid, there’s a word for both but I forgor).

-More ecological/societal-related than biology, but before Clearsight and even up to the Tree Wars, hybridizing was a lot more common between different tribes on Pantala that it was on Pyrriah. At the very least, Leafwings and Bugwings tended to not be as environmentally segregated as Pyrrian tribes. It’s still pretty common to find supposedly purebred Leafwings who have stingers or antennae or a Bugwing with sail-like structures.

-Many Leafwings have thorny structures or spiky scales as a form of defense.

-The barbels Seawings have are actually a lot more like tentacles they use to manipulate objects in place of their talons due to their legs being so adapted for swimming (more like flippers, not something I’m personally sticking to, but an idea).

-Different tribes have different styles of wing depending on their environment. Seawing wings help them swim but are also adapted for dynamic soaring when they are out of the water. Rain and Leafwing wings are built for passive gliding rather than speed or distance but can make acrobatic turns to avoid obstacles. Sand and Icewings have broad wings meant to carry them long distances but are poor at flying quickly or acrobatically. Skywings are sort of the jack-of-all-trades in terms of flight.
