Whither Jonny Quest?
NEWS ITEM: Wisconsin Public Radio recently cancelled a twice-each-weekend anthology of Old-Time Radio programmes after a review found that many of the shows featured, some going back over 60 years, contain âproblematic contentâ vis-a-vis race and gender depictions that would not be suitable under current circumstances.
ANOTHER NEWS ITEM:Â Disney has announced that itâs reassessing plans to produce a movie based on the Jungle River Cruise attraction at Disneyland and Walt Disney World out of concerns that the attractionâs backstory tended to racism excusing insensitivity to indigenous peoples and cultures.
*************
There can be no mistaking the obvious: Recent Unfortunate Events have laid bare and open to the naked light of Truth and Reality the debauched excesses of White Euro-Christian Colonialism and its promotion of âCivilisationâ unto what were long seen as âuncivilisedâ societies and peoples. Often using religious missionaries as a vanguard, such peoples were looked upon in crass and crude contexts having no regard for their traditional ways, such needing to be âcivilisedâ per the White Manâs Burden--more often than not involving fear, coercion, enslavement, deliberate spread of diseases and illnesses heretofore unknown unto them, rape and sexual coercion thereby reducing such once-proud peoples to shells of their former selves who âneeded to be kept in their rightful place,â more often than not as inferiors.
Already, the British, Dutch, French and Belgians have begun coming to terms with their legacies of colonialism in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa and Oceania, and the wrack and ruin wrought upon subjugated peoples and lands. (Lest we forget, we Americans as are otherwise expected to see ourselves as Morally Superior to All Others by Divine Right and Will had colonial misadventures of our own in the Philippines between 1899 and their being given independence in 1946, justified by claims, for example, that indigenous Malay peoples were âfilthyâ and âhad no regard for personal hygiene.â)
*************
I mention this inasmuch as the Hanna-Barbera-produced potboiler adventure series Jonny Quest (which aired in prime time on ABC in the 1964-65 season and would later see Saturday-morning runs on the then-three dominant networks), itself influenced by the classic radio juvenile adventure series Jack Armstrong, The All-American Boy (which aired on CBS and the NBC Blue Network [now ABC] between 1933 and 1951 in the after-school block commonly used for childrenâs programmes), might have some episodes from the original run which might contain problematic content vis-a-vis the issues just addressed, especially when such subjugation of indigenous peoples and lands under the guise of âcivilisationâ is seen as glorious or otherwise heroic and worthy of study and emulation. Such, obviously, needing to be viewed in the context of the mid-1960â˛s when such were originally produced, as well as the influence of Jack Armstrong (which, incidentally, Hanna-Barbera wanted to bring to television; General Mills, as still owned the rights in the series, was unwilling to sell them).
(Particularly interesting about Jack Armstrong was that among the announcers on the Chicago-based series during its run were Tommy Bartlett, later synonymous with that waterski show in Wisconsin Dells ... and Franklyn MacCormack, whose Meister Brau Showcase of music and poetry readings over the 50-kW airwaves of WGN Radio in Chicago was a late-night legend from 1958 until his on-air heart attack death in 1971.)
*************
Itâs my understanding that one episode of Jabberjaw has been pulled from the canon after it emerged that its story contained offensive depictions of Chinese persons, even for Saturday-morning television in the mid-1970â˛s (when we thought we had learned the lessons of using Fu Manchu and Ming the Merciless as template for depictions of the Chinese in popular culture).
With that in mind, perhaps a review of the original run of Jonny Quest might be in order to see if such might have content likely to raise issues making light of the ill-treatment of indigenous or otherwise âbackwardsâ peoples under the banner of White Euro-Christian Civilisation, even if science had to be served--even if, in the end, itâs likely that videos will likely be prefaced with a warning that such contains offensive depictions which were considered acceptable when they were produced originally, and should be seen in that context.
*************
But then again, I happen to have imagined in the case of Peter Potamus an Alternate Universe (AU to the fandom community) which has him being rather fond of a number of remote and uncharted island communities across Polynesia which have never seen the Destructive Impacts of Civilisation--and the natives, ânaked as nature intendedâ for the most part, actually prefer it that way. A fondness going back to Peterâs late father, Perry Potamus (himself somewhat eccentric and yet fond of wanderlust, eventually instilled in his son), on numerous expeditions in that Magic Balloon forever associated with Peter Potamus âhimself.â
And considering the rather sensitive nature of such peoples, Peter Potamus prefers to keep such knowledge of Uncharted Polynesia and its peoples and ways close to him and a few trusted friends--not to mention several privately-circulated volumes recounting his experiences among such otherwise interesting peoples. (But still, suffice it to say that the natives of Polynesia Uncharted, in their nakedness, enjoy swimming, diving underwater and surfing thus--dictated more out of comfort and closeness to Nature than any erotic intentions some might be thinking.)
In like vein, 3400 Cahuengaâs hybrid of Smurfs and The Dukes of Hazzard, as in Trollkins, I like reimagining as one which has Trolldom resident in the orisons of Trolltown and surrounds being closer to the trollditional lore which sees Trolls as being one with, and especially close to, Nature, in a sort of Zen-like approach that one fellow Hanna-Barberian described as âDukes of Hazzard meets J.R.R. Tolkeinâ--rather whimsically amusing in its own way, yet not sinking to the stereotypical lows of âhicksploitationâ films from the 1960â˛s and 1970â˛s as would sometimes incorporate country-music-related subplots vis-a-vis Southerners of a certain class. (As in imagining such Trolls having indirect fondness for outdoor sporting which can introllconnect with the natural such expected of Trolldom--backpacking, tent camping, trekking, canoeing, kayaking, diving underwater, that sort of thing.)

Like all the heroines discussed in this essay, Moore must reform a hard-core oppositional masculinity, a masculinity that cannot mix with women. In A Few Good Men, it could be argued, Moore performs a similar role, as she supplies the blend of moral intuition that Tom Cruise requires to solve the problem created by the earlier form of masculinity embodied in Jack Nicholson. Tom Cruise, however, is necessarily the one to confront and face down his obsolete counterpart, which he succeeds in doing with Mooreâs help and on behalf of the hapless minorities abused under the Navyâs ancien regime.
âNancy Armstrong, âCaptivity and Cultural Capital in the English Novel,â NOVEL: A Forum on Fiction 31:3 (1998)
(A Few Good Men is one of the antecedents Yang mentions; it dramatizes the rebirth of American martial culture under the aegis of liberalism. The filmâs triumvirate of military lawyersâan Irish Catholic Kennedyesque bad boy with a heart of gold descended from a civil rights attorney, first-among-equals alongside an empowered woman and a Jewish progressiveâdefeats Nicholsonâs semi-fascist Jessup and shepherd their defendant-charges, one poor-white and the other black, to a better understanding of their responsibilities to the enlightened nation and to a proper remorse for how they treated their Latino colleague. [Note the very precise idealized projection of the late-20th-century Democratic Party coalition and its hierarchy.] The CIA ad Yang mocks is already implicit in the film. But Sorkin, unfortunately for his own moral purposes, pulled a Milton/Dostoevsky and gave his devil the best lines: all anyone remembers from the film is Jessupâs monologue in defense of a permanent military state of exception, âthe truthâ we âcanât handle,â which is that we citizens sleep within a regulated perimeter patrolled by often lawless violence no matter how we sugarcoat it with liberal bromides. In other words, the most memorable moment of the film comes when the villain exposes the fraudulence of its overt ideological posturing.)Â

Five Things Abe Lincoln Did That Prove He Was A BAMF
I love Lincoln. You probably know this if youâve listened to me talk for more than two seconds. I have a literal entire bookshelf filled with Lincoln stuff. I teared up in Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln at Disneyland. I cried so hard when I watched Lincoln (2012), that I almost started dry-heaving. I was Lincoln (sort of) for Halloween.
Is it a problem? No. It isnât a problem, Mom. Because Lincoln was a 100% USDA-certified badass.
Donât believe me? Here are ten things Abe did to prove he was absolutely a BAMF.
1. That time he jumped out a window to prevent a vote.
In 1840, the Illinois legislature was voting on whether or not to fund the state bank. Lincoln was a member of the Whig party, which did not require members to wear wigs, contrary to what the name suggests, but which did support saving the state bank. The opposing party, the Democrats (different political beliefs from modern-day democrats, do NOT come at me, Reddit dudebros) wanted to shut the State bank down.
It all came down to a vote...and it looked like the anti-state bank democrats were going to win. Abraham Lincoln, then a 31-year-old legislator who looked like the pioneer version of a Tim Burton character, was getting nervous.Â
Above: Jack Skellington, 1840.
âShit,â he thought, probably, âWe Whigs are screwed if we lose this vote. And we donât even get to wear wigs.â
The bank-hating democrats scheduled a vote to adjourn the session, which would effectively be the nail in the state bankâs coffin. Abe was panicking. He was the de facto leader of the Whigs; he had to do something.Â
âProve your mettle, boy,â he probably thought to himself in a folksy, backwoods kinda way. âShow âem you ainât gonna give up.â
So Abe did what any self-respecting legislator would do when stuck between a rock and a hard place:
He jumped out the window of the legislature to stop the vote.
To be fair, Lincoln wasnât the only one to opt for a morning act of defenestration: a bunch of the other Whigs joined in, too. The rationale was, essentially, this:
Which is peak Internet comedy, but unfortunately, it was 1840 and the Internet didnât exist yet, so nobody appreciated the gesture and the democrats eventually wound up closing the bank, anyway.Â
But at least Abe showed the entire state that he appreciated Looney Tunes-esque escape tactics.
2. That time he roasted a guy during a debate with good-old self-deprecating humor.
You ever rely on self-deprecating humor to beat people to the âyes, I KNOW I am offensiveâ punch?
So did our 16th president, Abraham Nicole Lincoln.
(Not his real middle name.)
When Lincoln was campaigning, his biggest rival was Stephen Douglas, the Democratic contender who was nicknamed âthe little giantâ because he was short but a heavy hitter in politics, and also because he looks like the kind of guy that just wouldnât shut up at parties:
Above:Â âActually, Iâm not racist, BUT--â
In 1858, Lincoln and Douglas held a series of seven famous political debates called, brilliantly, The Lincoln-Douglas Debates, coming to you LIVE at Rockefeller Center, with performances by the Rockettes, Anna and Elsa on Ice, AND with special guest, Seal!
These debates were THE go-to political show of the season. If you were super into who would be elected to the Illinois Senate in the mid-19th century, then holy shit, you have got to watch these two men go at each other, man, itâs like watching a tree and an angry little dog slap each other across the stage.
During the debates, Lincoln quickly became famous for his one-liners, and also because no one had ever seen a talking tree in a suit before.
In one of the debates, Douglas accused Lincoln of being two-faced. Without missing a beat, Lincoln, who had been mocked his entire life for his ungainly, scarecrow-like appearance in the same way that I just mocked him a few sentences ago, whoops...
ANYWAY.
Lincoln turned to Douglas and went, âHonestly, if I were two-faced, would I be showing you this one?âÂ
And then the audience did this:
And then Lincoln was like:
Check. Mate.Â
3. That time he was so strong and such a good wrestler that nobody messed with him.
When I say âwrestler,â what do you think of?
Is it this?
Maybe this?
What about this?
Huh? Whatâs that you say? âWhat the hell is...is that Lincoln? What...what the hell is Lincoln doing in a list of wrestlers?
âUm,â I answer, âBeing a wrestler.â
Because Abraham Lincoln, 6Ⲡ4Ⳡand all of 150-something pounds, was, in fact, an incredibly talented wrestler.
So talented, in fact, that when it came to wrestling matches, he went undefeated for most of his life.
See, Lincoln grew up in the middle of butt crack-nowhere, out in the sticks of the American frontier. Ainât no room for sissies out on the frontier. This hereâs hard-scrabble country, see, rough-livinâ; you gotta spit to live; you gotta live to spit; Neosporin? I think you mean weak-ass bitch cream.
So how did rootinâ tootinâ frontier folk blow off steam? Well, when they werenât dying of dysentery or tuberculosis or minor infections that could today be cured by steady application of Neosporin, they were wrasslinâ. And when it came to the act of picking someone up and throwing them back down, nobody wrestled like 21-year-old Abraham Justine Lincoln.
(Not his real middle name.)
One look at the guy and people were like, âThe hell? Whatâs this ancient Egyptian mummy doing in the ring?â
But the second he got going, everyone shut up. Because this guy was nuts. He was a berserker. He could defeat a guy three times his size in seconds. He could bench the Rock, probably, and not even break a sweat.
He was the nicest guy in town. But nobody--and I mean nobody--messed with Abraham Ashley Lincoln.
(Not his real middle name).
One time, Jack Armstrong, the local heavyweight champion who was the Big Bad in town and undefeated in the wrestling and âIâm a giant asshole who smashes my way through problemsâ arena, challenged Lincoln to a match.Â
âUh oh,â everyone in the little town of New Salem, Illinois thought, âThatâs it for olâ Twig Legs Abe. He might be good, but thereâs no way he can defeat Jack Armstrong. Nice knowing you, kid; itâs a shame, because you might have made a solid president.â
But Lincoln, who knew no fear and ate chains forged in the heart of a dwarven cavern for breakfast, was like, âBring it on, bitch.â
Above: Playinâ with the boys.
Jack and Abe started sparring and Jack threw insult after insult Abeâs way. I donât know exactly what Jack said, but it was probably the 19th century equivalent of, âYou may have 2,300 Facebook friends but nobody cares about the pictures of your homemade Shake âN Bake chicken that you post, eggwad.â
Abe didnât relent.Â
See, he was getting angry.
Really angry.
So angry, in fact, that in one fell swoop, he suddenly slammed big Jack Armstrong to the ground so hard that Armstrong passed out, cold.
Abe had won. Everyone stared at the panting, growling, 6â˛4âł pine tree man in reverent awe.Â
A fun epilogue to this story: after Jack Armstrong recovered from getting his ass handed to him by a guy who looked like an extra in a movie about the Amish, he and Abe remained steadfast buddies for the rest of their lives.Â
Jack just never ever insulted Abraham Jessica Lincoln again.
(Not his real middle name.)
4. The (many) times he went off into long, rambling stories during Cabinet meetings to illustrate a point.
You know how grandma and grandpa sometimes go off on tangents and youâre like, âokay, okay, get to the point.â
But grandma and grandpa donât even respond and just keep talking about that one time in 1953 that Anne-Marie told George that no, she hadnât gone to the corner store, why do you keep asking, George? And then I said to George, I said, George, you need to listen to Anne-Marie because she knows that the corner store is the only one in town that sells fresh-laid eggs and Butterick circle skirt patterns, but did he listen? Did he listen to me? No, he didnât, so I went to---
You get it.
So did every single member of Lincolnâs cabinet. Because Lincoln was a consummate storyteller, for better or for worse.Â
(Sometimes for worse, depending on who you asked.)
Above:Â âOne time, at band camp...â
Lincoln would interrupt important meetings about, you know, saving the Union and the soul of the country itself with anecdotes that started something like this:
Lincoln: You know, Sec. Stanton, that reminds me of a fur-trapper I knew back in Illinois--
Stanton: Great, except, Mr. President, everyone is dying--
Lincoln: Now this here fur trapper was the best fur trapper in the entire state. Not the entire country, mind you, on account of we didnât really have a way of measuring fur-trapping skills nationwide--
Stanton: *neck turning purple* Mr. President--
Lincoln:--but definitely the best fur trapper in Illinois. Now one day, this fur trapper set out to do what he did best: shoot some raccoons, or maybe a bear, or a wolf if he was lucky, or a deer, or some moose, or a beaver, or a mongoose, or maybe a possum--
Stanton: OH MY GOD--
Lincoln:--or a cat, if times were desperate, but not a dog, never a dog, because this here fur trapper loved dogs; had six of âem himself, all hound dogs, loyal to a fault, see, because this here fur trapper--
Stanton: JUST STOP--
Lincoln: --this here fur trapper could be short-sighted. See, he set his sights one day on shooting the biggest bear in the mountains--and this bear, why, this here bear was a Goliath of a bear, the biggest bear anyone ever did see, the biggest bear in the state; not the biggest bear in the country, mind you, on account of we didnât have a way of comparing bear sizes nationwide, but--
You get the gist.
Above: âSo Iâm sitting there, barbecue sauce on my tiddies--â
Eventually, Lincoln would get to the point of his story; in this example, for...um, example...maybe the moral was, âDonât get so focused on one goal (shooting that big bear) that you loose sight of other objectives in the war (getting rid of the wolf pack killing all the sheep or whatever).â
I would like to explain to you why telling long, rambling grandpa stories was such a power move:
Abe Lincoln was the president.Â
So his whole Cabinet had to listen.
And Abe Lincoln knew it.
They had to listen to this backwoods guy go on and on about how that one time the local long boatsman fell into the river actually serves as a metaphor for Gen. McClellanâs inability to take control of the troops; or how the rabid raccoon that lived in the local blacksmithâs shop can serve as a metaphor for acting too hastily when trying to take down the South.Â
Or, like, whatever.
Above:Â âAll here in favor of me performing the entirety of Les Mis starring me as everyone, raise your hands.â
Apparently, Lincoln was also the kind of storyteller who, if there was a funny punchline at the end, took forever to get to the punch line because heâd start laughing hysterically at his own joke, and while many people thought it was incredibly endearing, others were like, âBoy, I wonder what it would be like if I dumped this entire fucking bottle of ink over the presidentâs head to get him to shut the fuck up.â
Spoiler alert: Lincoln did not, in fact, shut the fuck up. He was determined to teach folks a lesson through the the power of storytelling and also to help break the tension of a legitimately horrible war with the power of laughter.
Monopolizing the conversation to prove a point with anecdotes about frontier living that no one can escape?
Power. Move.
5. Those times he let his kids run amok in the White House and thought it was hilarious.
Lincoln had a four kids, all boys, who moved into the White House after he was elected president.
And these boys were little terrors.
To be fair, a vast majority of boys are terrors. Kids are terrors. They are small harbingers of chaos and discord with little regard for their fellow humans, which means they fit right in in the White House EYYYY POLITICAL COMMENTARY.
But Lincolnâs kids, apparently, were especially out of control.
Above:Â âAlright, enough pussy-footinâ around, Pops, fork over the dough and no one gets a kick in the nuts.â
Lincoln adored his boys, partly because he was a good dad and partly because heâd already had one child die tragically, so understandably, he was like, âLife is short and antibiotics havenât been invented yet so weâre all going to die from getting paper cuts, probably; Iâm just gonna let my boys do whatever the hell they want.â
And he kind of...did.
Willie and Tad Lincoln, his two youngest, brought tons of pets into the White House. Dogs, cats, birds...when people objected, Lincoln just sort of shrugged. He, too, was a huge animal lover and didnât really care if ponies were clomping around the Oval Office. âMy White House, my rules, my indoor ponies.â
The two Lincoln boys would dress up in military uniforms and have fake military drills and stage fake (LOUD) battles all over the White House, including when Dad was in a Cabinet meeting.
What did Dad do, you ask?
Laugh his head off.
While his kids would burst into Cabinet meetings, crawl under the table and kick important Senatorsâ legs and feet, generally causing a grade-A ruckus, Abe would try and fail to stifle his laughter.
Which, you know. Objectively isnât the best parenting, but for Peteâs sake, they were at war, canât they have a little fun? Jesus, lighten up, folks, theyâre kids.
The Lincoln boys particularly irritated Sec. of War Edwin Stanton, but to be fair, almost everything irritated Sec. of War Edwin Stanton.
Above:Â âI have never had fun once, ever, in my life.â
Once again, Lincolnâs rationale was, âLife is fragile, one of my children already died, the country is at war, and kids make me laugh, so if they want to punch Sec. Stanton in the balls under the table, who am I to stop them?â
Also, Lincoln was the president, so nobody thought it was appropriate to go, âUm, hey? Mr.--Mr. President? Maybe you could tell your sons to, you know...not crawl under the table and interrupt, um...important...war strategy meetings?â
ALSO, Lincoln once wrestled a man twice his size to the ground without batting an eyelash, so you go tell him to make his kids behave. I dare you.

September 27, 1869:
James Butler Hickok (May 27, 1837- Aug 2, 1876), widely known as the infamous "Wild Bill" of the Old American West, and sheriff of Ellis County, Kansas, responded to a call around 1 a.m. about a band of drunken troublemakers causing a scene at John Bitters' Beer Saloon. These disorderly teamsters, one by the name of Samuel Strawhum, strolled into the saloon that evening exhibiting an acceptable degree of intoxication, as far as Wild West standards are concerned. However, around midnight, the group became violent and destructive. A brawl ensued, and Strawhum and the fellow mischief-makers began smashing chairs, throwing tables, and destroying property. When Wild Bill and his deputy, "Rattlesnake Pete" Lanihan (gotta love Wild West nicknames), arrived to restore order and deal with the rowdy teamsters, Sheriff Hickok asked the not-so-gentle gentlemen to hand over their weapons. Strawhum laughed and drew his firearm, anyway. Acting instantly, Wild Bill shot Strawhum in the head - killing him instantly.
In the 1800s, Hays City operated as a freight and cattle center, but like many Old West towns, gambling was Hays' biggest industry. Hays attracted drifters, soldiers, hunters, cattlemen, and the general riffraff one would expect to find in a town many called "the deadliest place in the West." The people elected the already famous "Wild Bill" as Sheriff of Ellis County on August 23, 1869 for his reputation as a Civil War hero and expert gunfighter. Being quite rough and tumble himself, Hickok seemed fit to lay down the law in a city besieged by drunken violence and petty crime. Hickok was quick to assert his authority as sheriff of Ellis County, and within the first five weeks, he had already killed two men. Despite impressive reputation, residents felt uneasy about his violent and impulsive methods. In just three months, Wild Bill lost re-election to his deputy, Rattlesnake Pete.
However, Wild Bill's brief time as Ellis County Sheriff represents just a blip in his relatively short, but legendary life. Acquainted with such Wild West characters such as Buffalo Bill Cody and Calamity Jane, Hickok holds a distinguished position among American folk heroes. As a lawman, heavy gambler, soldier, actor, scout, and ladies man, Wild Bill was a real Wild West renaissance man. Originally from northern Illinois, Wild Bill traveled throughout the West, making a mark on local legend and local history seemingly every where he went. Like with many infamous characters of the Old West, many of these stories seem too outlandish and exaggerated to be real. Yet, writings from friends and family reveal that he was well-liked by many - and that there is at least some truth to many of these stories.
Libbie Custer, wife of Brevet Major General George Armstrong Custer, described Hickok's appearance in a way that may have left Mr. Custer feeling a bit uncomfortable. After all, there were rumors of an affair. She described Hickok lovingly: "Physically, he was a delight to look upon. Tall, lithe...he rode as if every muscle was perfection...I do not recall anything finer in the way of physical perfection than Wild Bill when he swung himself lightly from his saddle." Libbie wasn't the only one to comment on his striking appearance. He's described as tall and having piercing gray eyes, and long blondish hair that swept past his broad shoulders. A bartender at Carl Mann's Saloon in Deadwood, Dakota Territory stated that, "A more picturesque sight than Hickok on horseback could not be imagined."
Despite his good looks, and despite his sometimes questionable reputation as a gambler and zealous gunfighter, Hickok became highly regarded for this actions during the Civil War. It is generally believed that this is where James Butler Hickok became Wild Bill Hickok, although the reasons why are not known  for certain. During the war, Hickok acted as a spy and detective, and proved to be an expert marksman. Prior to the Civil War, he also worked at a station on the Underground Railroad, helping enslaved men and women make their way to freedom.
However, perhaps what Wild Bill is most well-known for is his duel with Davis Tutt in July of 1865. The duel took place in Springfield, MO and was fought over the same reasons many saloon brawls and duels were fought over in the Wild West: gambling debts and women. Wild Bill lost a gold watch of sentimental value to Tutt in a game of poker, and while Wild Bill accepted defeat somewhat gracefully - asking Tutt at least not to wear it around him - Wild Bill became furious when he saw Tutt wearing it, flashing it about.
What happened next is what many say is the first recorded quick-draw duel in Wild West history. Hickok, standing seventy-five yards away from Tutt, squared his broad shoulders and set those piercing grey eyes on Tutt. From such a distance, Hickok was able to shoot Tutt through the heart. Tutt's bullet missed Hickok entirely. According to the story, Tutt's last words were: "Boys, I'm killed."
It is from this point on where Hickok's celebrity takes off. Journalist George Ward Nichols published an interview in Harper's New Monthly Magazine that tantalized readers with stories of "Wild Bill" and his impressive gunfighting skills. In the interview, Hickok claimed to have killed hundreds in gunfights. However, the leading historian on Wild Bill suggests a more likely claim, backed up by evidence, that Hickok only killed 6-8 people in gunfights. Hickok stood trial on August 3, 1865, but a jury ultimately acquitted, utilizing the unwritten "fair fight" law in his favor.
Hickok continued to use his celebrity to his advantage. He went on to be Deputy Marshal in Abilene, TX - which has earned him a spot on the Texas Trail of Fame. He even joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show for three months in 1873. But at 39, this rough and tumble renaissance man was starting to feel the weight of life in the fast lane. His eyes were deteriorating, making him useless as a marksman, and his gambling habits were about to catch up with him.
On August 2, 1876, the beloved celebrity, lawman, and Union veteran was shot in the head at point-blank range by Jack McCall while playing a game of poker. McCall lost severely to Hickok the day prior, and while Hickok offered to at least pay for the man's breakfast, McCall, not much more than a local bum, sought his revenge. Days before Hickok's death, he wrote to his wife, Agnes: "If such should be we never meet again, while firing my last shot, I will gently breathe the name of my wife - Agnes - and with wishes even for my enemies I will make the plunge and try to swim to the shore." The hand Hickok had before he was shot became known as the "dead man's hand:" two black aces and two eights. The fifth card, damaged by McCall's shot, is unknown.
Wild Bill embodied all that was holy (and perhaps unholy) about the Wild West. He was rugged Civil War veteran and aggressive lawman. He was a gambler and a perfect marksman, but he was also a lover and a doting husband. The Wild West still possesses an active part of the American imagination. It continues to inspire films, books, and television, and tantalizes us with stories, often fabricated and romanticized, of cowboys and natives on horseback, of rowdy saloons, and of the vigilantes and explorers who roamed the frontier.
If you're ever in Fort Worth, stop by the Texas Trail of Fame to check out Wild Bill's star, and remember the sheriff, marshal, soldier, scout, and husband who earned his place among the other American folk heroes of the Old West in more ways than one.

My Wild and Crazy Weekend with the Hair Bear Bunch! (part I)
N.B. Although this is written in the first person, and is in the stylee of such articles common to fan magazines such as Tiger Beat, 16, J14 and similar, this is entirely Hanna-Barbera fanfiction (Hair Bear Bunch specifically) and should be construed as such.
You won't believe what ensued that Friday afternoon just as another week of middle school bordering on ennui was winding down: My getting a message advising me not to take the usual bus home from school this evening, but to report to the school office and "await further instructions." Myself, I admit to being in a rather dysfunctional environment of foster care with the parents I have somehow blaming me for everything that has gone wrong, especially their drinking habitually and their "going into excessive debts because of my presence" ... as well as an all-consumptive desire to see my name on the Honour Roll explaining longer and longer study breaks at home at night. How was I to know such was bordering on hazing or worse?
The final bell of the week: Per the instruction, I report to the office and "await further instructions," which the receptionist explains are, in addition to my not taking the bus home that evening, that--
as an emergency measure, I have basically been removed from my current foster home with immediate effect, the county having found that the parents were Morally Unfit based on a mix of anecdotal reports and whispers on the street;
arrangements are being made to move me into a new home as soon as possible; and
for the weekend, I am to "expect a surprise" within the next few minutes.
And you wonder who made such possible, or who otherwise sensed the need on my part.
"If you'll just turn around," the receptionist explained, "facing the main door--"
How was I to know that it was going to be the Hair Bear Bunch, late of the Wonderland Zoo and now basically roaming around the country?
"Uh, Zach--" (It was Hair Bear, the leader of the ursine trio, addressing me there.)
"However did you know my name, for starters?"
"We've been asked to have you join us for the weekend."
"Yeah," chimed in the somewhat dopey-sounding Square Bear. "At least it'll be different than what you've been going through."
"And what more the clyde could there turn out being when all is said and done"? asked Bubi, whom Hair Bear explained as "not all that bright a bulb, but still, he's rather crazy, fun-loving and talkative!"
I admit being stupified at the sight of such an unlikely set of what could best be called surrogates. I didn't quite know what to say in the confines of the school office under the circumstances to hand ... but moving to their rebuilt Volkswagen minibus, serving as something of a mobile bivouac in their exercises in fun, parked on the street out front, things started getting a little more excitable.
"So, Zach," Hair Bear exclaimed as he got into the driver's seat, me riding shotgun, with Square and Bubi riding in the back, "believe you me, this is certain to be quite the game-changer on your end! Having heard word about what your foster parents were driving you through emotionally, it somehow came about naturally that you needed a little change in your life!"
"I just hope you have swim trunks along" said I, to which Square remarked that "We usually like to just wear ourselves, you might say, when we go swimming, diving and surfing!" To which I exclaimed like an excited young boy, "You mean--you actually go swimming NAKED?!!"
"Why not?" Hair Bear added. "It just feels natural and all the more comfortable!"
"I assume you've got a decent bunk for me in this camper van," remarked I.
"Trust me" was all Hair Bear could remark as we pulled in to a rather cool-looking pizza place that Square Bear in particular admitted that the ursine trio was fond of "instead of all those chain joints, which can get to be predictably dull!" Whereupon Bubi, with his usual incomprehensible energy, added "Sometimes, you have to seriously discover the different sort of the clyde, the places which must get different, which must get fascinating!"
"Fascinating" was perhaps the ideal word to describe the night at that particular pizza place. Unpretentiously moody-looking, though not exactly Scooby-Doo-type moody, and believe you me, the evening couldn't have been even more irresistable, nursing an evening over what you might describe as the greatest sort of meat-lover's pizza on a Chicago-style pan crust. And rather substantially sized, considering the appetites of such an ursine trio fond of the old joie de vivre even back at the Wonderland Zoo ("Yet for some reason, even with us getting the blame, you could sense the zoo was falling apart--gross ineptitude aggravated by warped pride of those two most inept zookeepers, Botch and Peevly ... but be thankful that the zoo's shock closing amounted to a discovery on our part, an epiphanic sort of discovery, you might say, that we were fun-loving bears whose desire couldn't be suppressed even with a dry moat and a pipe fence with the inevitable 'Do Not Feed or Tease The Bears' warning outside our pseudo-den!"--Hair Bear).
Believe you me, even with such an exceptional meat-lover's pizza and what seemed like gallons of Dr Pepper (believe you me, I can't resist Dr Pepper), I coluld sense that I was beginning to change as much inside as outside. I couldn't help but sense the sheer giddiness coming upon me, being relased from utterly unfeeling foster parents who saw me only as Jack Armstrong, The All-American Boy deliberately suppressing the will and desire towards such an end.
"So what else are we going to enjoy this weekend exactly?"
"Such, you might say," Hair Bear was quick to explain, "will evolve all along."
"Yeah," Square Bear added; "the whole is sure to be a great big surprise, one exciting thing after another like you never experienced!"
The possibilities seeming to multiply even as we were driving into the night, the satellite radio playing a steady stream of '70's popdisks such as I could not help but resisting their catchiness ... and with the night outside seeming a bit chilly, Hair turned on the heater, accented somewhat with air freshener having the aroma of the seaside ... could I be in heaven, even if it's but for a weekend's release from abusive foster parents?
Stay tuned for next week's exciting conclusion, when more interesting detail of such an interesting weekend will be revealed!

Lionel Hampton
Lionel Leo Hampton (April 20, 1908 â August 31, 2002) was an American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, and bandleader. Hampton worked with jazz musicians from Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, and Buddy Rich to Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Quincy Jones. In 1992, he was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1996.
Biography
Early life
Lionel Hampton was born in 1908 in Louisville, Kentucky, and was raised by his mother. Shortly after he was born, he and his mother moved to her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. He spent his early childhood in Kenosha, Wisconsin, before he and his family moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1916. As a youth, Hampton was a member of the Bud Billiken Club, an alternative to the Boy Scouts of America, which was off-limits because of racial segregation. During the 1920s, while still a teenager, Hampton took xylophone lessons from Jimmy Bertrand and began to play drums. Hampton was raised Roman Catholic, and started out playing fife and drum at the Holy Rosary Academy near Chicago.
Early career
Lionel Hampton began his career playing drums for the Chicago Defender Newsboys' Band (led by Major N. Clark Smith) while still a teenager in Chicago. He moved to California in 1927 or 1928, playing drums for the Dixieland Blues-Blowers. He made his recording debut with The Quality Serenaders led by Paul Howard, then left for Culver City and drummed for the Les Hite band at Sebastian's Cotton Club. One of his trademarks as a drummer was his ability to do stunts with multiple pairs of sticks such as twirling and juggling without missing a beat. During this period he began practicing on the vibraphone. In 1930 Louis Armstrong came to California and hired the Les Hite band, asking Hampton if he would play vibes on two songs. So began his career as a vibraphonist, popularizing the use of the instrument in the process. Invented ten years earlier, the vibraphone is essentially a xylophone with metal bars, a sustain pedal, and resonators equipped with electric-powered fans that add tremolo.
While working with the Les Hite band, Hampton also occasionally did some performing with Nat Shilkret and his orchestra. During the early 1930s, he studied music at the University of Southern California. In 1934 he led his own orchestra, and then appeared in the Bing Crosby film Pennies From Heaven (1936) alongside Louis Armstrong (wearing a mask in a scene while playing drums).
With Benny Goodman
Also in November 1936, the Benny Goodman Orchestra came to Los Angeles to play the Palomar Ballroom. When John Hammond brought Goodman to see Hampton perform, Goodman invited him to join his trio, which soon became the Benny Goodman Quartet with Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa completing the lineup. The Trio and Quartet were among the first racially integrated jazz groups to perform before audiences, and were a leading small-group of the day.
Lionel Hampton Orchestra
While Hampton worked for Goodman in New York, he recorded with several different small groups known as the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, as well as assorted small groups within the Goodman band. In 1940 Hampton left the Goodman organization under amicable circumstances to form his own big band.
Hampton's orchestra developed a high-profile during the 1940s and early 1950s. His third recording with them in 1942 produced the version of "Flying Home", featuring a solo by Illinois Jacquet that anticipated rhythm & blues. Although Hampton first recorded "Flying Home" under his own name with a small group in 1940 for Victor, the best known version is the big band version recorded for Decca on May 26, 1942, in a new arrangement by Hampton's pianist Milt Buckner. The 78pm disc became successful enough for Hampton to record "Flyin' Home #2" in 1944, this time a feature for Arnett Cobb. The song went on to become the theme song for all three men. Guitarist Billy Mackel first joined Hampton in 1944, and would perform and record with him almost continuously through to the late 1970s. In 1947, Hamp performed "Stardust" at a "Just Jazz" concert for producer Gene Norman, also featuring Charlie Shavers and Slam Stewart; the recording was issued by Decca. Later, Norman's GNP Crescendo label issued the remaining tracks from the concert.
Hampton was a featured artist at numerous Cavalcade of Jazz concerts held at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles and produced by Leon Hefflin Sr. His first performance was at the second Cavalcade of Jazz concert held on October 12, 1946 and also featured Jack McVea, Slim Gaillard, T-Bone Walker, the Honeydrippers and Louis Armstrong. The fifth Cavalcade of Jazz concert was held in two locations, Wrigley Field in Los Angeles and Lane Field in San Diego, July 10, 1949 and September 3, 1949 respectively. Betty Carter, Jimmy Witherspoon, Buddy Banks, Smiley Turner and Big Jay McNeely also played with Hampton. It was at the sixth Cavalcade of Jazz, June 25, 1950 that precipitated the closest thing to a riot in the showâs eventful history. Lionel and his band paraded around the ball parkâs infield playing âFlying Highâ. Â The huge crowd, around 14,000 went berserk, tossed cushions, coats, hats, programs, and just about anything else they could lay hands on and swarmed on the field. Dinah Washington, Roy Milton, PeeWee Crayton, Lillie Greenwood, Tiny Davis an Her Hell Divers were also featured. His final Cavalcade of Jazz concert held on July 24, 1955 (Eleventh) also featured Big Jay McNeely, The Medallions, The Penguins and James Moody and his Orchestra.
From the mid-1940s until the early 1950s, Hampton led a lively rhythm & blues band whose Decca Records recordings included numerous young performers who later had significant careers. They included bassist Charles Mingus, saxophonist Johnny Griffin, guitarist Wes Montgomery, and vocalist Dinah Washington. Other noteworthy band members were trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie, Cat Anderson, Kenny Dorham, and Snooky Young; trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, and saxophonists Jerome Richardson and Curtis Lowe.
The Hampton orchestra that toured Europe in 1953 included Clifford Brown, Gigi Gryce, Anthony Ortega, Monk Montgomery, George Wallington, Art Farmer, Quincy Jones, and singer Annie Ross. Hampton continued to record with small groups and jam sessions during the 1940s and 1950s, with Oscar Peterson, Buddy DeFranco, and others. In 1955, while in California working on The Benny Goodman Story he recorded with Stan Getz and made two albums with Art Tatum for Norman Granz as well as with his own big band.
Hampton performed with Louis Armstrong and Italian singer Lara Saint Paul at the 1968 Sanremo Music Festival in Italy. The performance created a sensation with Italian audiences, as it broke into a real jazz session. That same year, Hampton received a Papal Medal from Pope Paul VI.
Later career
During the 1960s, Hampton's groups were in decline; he was still performing what had succeeded for him earlier in his career. He did not fare much better in the 1970s, though he recorded actively for his Who's Who in Jazz record label, which he founded in 1977/1978.
Beginning in February 1984, Hampton and his band played at the University of Idaho's annual jazz festival, which was renamed the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival the following year. In 1987 the UI's school of music was renamed for Hampton, the first university music school named for a jazz musician.
Hampton remained active until a stroke in Paris in 1991 led to a collapse on stage. That incident, combined with years of chronic arthritis, forced him to cut back drastically on performances. However, he did play at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 2001 shortly before his death.
Hampton died from congestive heart failure at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City, on August 31, 2002. He was interred at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, New York. His funeral was held on September 7, 2002, and featured a performance by Wynton Marsalis and David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band at Riverside Church in Manhattan; the procession began at The Cotton Club in Harlem.
Personal life
On November 11, 1936, in Yuma, Arizona, Lionel Hampton married Gladys Riddle (1913â1971). Gladys was Lionel's business manager throughout much of his career. Many musicians recall that Lionel ran the music and Gladys ran the business.
During the 1950s he had a strong interest in Judaism and raised money for Israel. In 1953 he composed a King David suite and performed it in Israel with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Later in life Hampton became a Christian Scientist. Hampton was also a Thirty-third degree Prince Hall freemason. In January 1997, his apartment caught fire and destroyed his awards and belongings; Hampton escaped uninjured.
On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Lionel Hampton among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.
Charity
Hampton was deeply involved in the construction of various public housing projects, and founded the Lionel Hampton Development Corporation. Construction began with the Lionel Hampton Houses in Harlem, New York in the 1960s, with the help of then Republican governor Nelson Rockefeller. Hampton's wife, Gladys Hampton, also was involved in construction of a housing project in her name, the Gladys Hampton Houses. Gladys died in 1971. In the 1980s, Hampton built another housing project called Hampton Hills in Newark, New Jersey.
Hampton was a staunch Republican and served as a delegate to several Republican National Conventions. He served as Vice-Chairman of the New York Republican County Committee for some years and also was a member of the New York City Human Rights Commission. Hampton donated almost $300,000 to Republican campaigns and committees throughout his lifetime.
