The Ryder twins, as I write them, got exposed to Element Zero in utero. They got way luckier than their mom, and now they are both able to use biotics, but the development of their abilities went in different directions.
It felt like Anatole was born to become a powerful biotic specialist, to wield this kind of power. He feels it almost intuitively; he's so in tune with biotics that it seems that Element Zero is buzzing, blooming under his hands, fluid, potent, and powerful, like a tsunami. Even in the eyes of a non-human, his biotics are impressive. He packs quite a punch and generally deals a whole lot more damage than, say, his sister, especially if it's slow-paced.
Naïse, on the other hand, as a jack of all trades, also does well in biotics (but not as well as Anatole), but hers are in the same line as her other skills, like tech and combat development profiles.
If Anatole makes eezo ring, boil, and as if revel in its own freedom, under Naïse's guidance, it swoops in, hits you under the gut, and twists from a tight spindle into those quicksand-like, destructive pinpoint strikes, into arrows, waves, and walls.

Husk
The automated distress beacon from a private archaeological dig on Palea in the Messorum system had seemed routine at first. It wasn’t until Shepard and her team found the remains of the archaeological team and the artifact they uncovered in a blind cavern that the mission went from bland reconnaissance to stay-the-fuck-alive-somehow.
“You know how to pick all the galaxy’s shittiest vacation spots, huh, Shepard?” Jack grunted, flinging a biotic shockwave toward the wall of oncoming husks.
“Just trying to show you a good time, Jack.” Shepard responded around a grim smile. She ejected a smoking thermal clip from her shotgun and quickly reloaded in one smooth motion before immediately unloading on the shambling corpses that approached her, arms outstretched and mouth agape in a hideous imitation of a scream.
“Fuck you, Shepard,” was Jack’s reply almost by default. But there was just the faintest trace of a feral grin on her face as a wall of blue light erupted from her, bowling over the nearby husks. She was utterly in her element in the whirlwind of violence at the center of the cavern, venting her pent-up rage on the walking corpses without remorse. A husk flew past her, surrounded in the angry, crackling energy that was Jack’s biotic signature, and slammed into the far wall
“Yeah! Right on your ass!” Grunt’s voice boomed next to her, followed by the roar of his shotgun scattering the broken pieces of a husk in every direction. He was enjoying himself, too.
But the husks simply wouldn’t stop coming. They came in waves, stumbling with a single-minded, blind ferocity that didn’t falter even as they clambered over the mangled corpses of the previous wave. The last time she’d seen this many had been…well, Horizon.
A knot formed in her stomach immediately on the heels of that thought.
Fuck Horizon. And fuck Kaidan, too.
A snarl formed on her lips. As usual, the need to punch something rose up within her whenever the memory of Kaidan’s angry parting words echoed in her thoughts. Fortunately, a nearby husk that managed to evade her shotgun blasts was an obliging target.
The husk lifted with the force of her punch, sailing up and over her shoulder with the limp energy of a tattered ragdoll. It landed behind her, its arms stuttering weakly in an attempt to push itself up in its single-minded focus on destroying her. Husks were almost worse than mechs that way. Even simple LOKI mechs had programming contingencies, parameters that allowed them to evaluate targets and react to changing circumstances. Husks didn’t. Once they were set loose they merely followed their single directive to destroy until they were destroyed.
She spun on her heel, gathering biotic dark energy as she moved, and sank to one knee as she brought her gauntleted fist down on the husk’s chest with a flare of blue light and accompanied by a satisfying dry crack as the husk’s chest cavity gave way.
The subsequent lull in the wave of husks let her wipe the husk's ichor from her gauntlet on the front of her armor. The clink of something metal hitting the ground caught her attention, to where an ichor-covered pin lay at her feet. Curious, she picked it up and turned it over in her hand.
Dr. Christine Napier, Lead Archaeologist was engraved on the pin.
She snapped her gaze to the husk, to where the blue lights in its eyes and beneath its cracked, darkened skin were already dimming.
“Shepard! What the fuck are you doing?” Jack’s voice cut across her thoughts, and the sudden chaotic din of the battle rushed back in toward her as another wave of husks approached with the staccato pulse of a shockwave that heralded a scion.
Because of fucking course there was a scion.
The rest of the battle was a blur, but at the end she, Jack, and Grunt remained standing in the middle of a pile of huskified corpses and spent thermal clips. The acrid smell of eezo permeated the cavern, and all three of them were only too happy to leave it behind them once the shuttle arrived to pick them up.
------------------------------------------------------
The blue-black ichor clung to her long after the fight was over.
Ever since that first encounter with the walking corpses on Eden Prime, she’d found that the thick, dark, sludge in their veins was hard to scrub out of the joints and servos of her armor. It soaked into her hair and skin and would only come out with a harsh soap and vigorous scrubbing. Back on Eden Prime, husks had been a walking horror show, the first testament to the hideous efficiency of the Reapers in recycling the dead of the conquered. Since then, they’d become so routine that the quartermaster always kept a stock of the harsher soaps and solvents required to remove their ichor on hand. It was easy to forget that the ichor had once been the red blood of living beings.
She’d never been more grateful for the private shower in the SR-2 than after Palea.
Once the scrubbing was done, she let the warm, clean water in the shower take the last of the ichor off and watched it circle the drain near her feet. It didn’t take long before it became clear as the shower washed away everything but her thoughts.
She had a name. Napier. Dr. Christine Napier.
When she looked in the mirror, would she see her own green eyes or the flickering orange-red lights that still stared at her through her reflection? Would she see the cracked, glowing scars that crackled along her skin like fault lines?
What had Dr. Christine Napier seen when she looked in the mirror before the artifact ate the remains of her humanity? Or any of the other walking corpses back on Palea?
What had Kaidan seen when he’d looked at her, back on Horizon?
The showerhead beeped, signaling that the water would automatically shut off in one minute. She quickly hit the shut-off button and waited until the last of the water circled down the drain before wrapping herself in a towel. She side-stepped the mirror on her way out of the head and hastily threw on her uniform to paper over the jagged scars that haunted her skin.
Christine Napier hadn’t asked for this.
Shepard hadn’t, either.

it is so ridiculously entertaining writing a subplot that a) the media thinks that shepard and kaidan are secret lovers, and b) khalisa bint sinan al-jilani holds a grudge
HeWOES of the Citadel: The Definitive Timeline Between Delia Shepard and Kaidan Alenko’s Steamy Romance and Devastation Separation
Written by Khalisa bint Sinan al-Jilani
Romeo and Juliet. Jack and Rose. Heirax and Sarve’er. Timeless love stories that all have one thing in common: a tragic and devastating end. With the heaviest of hearts, we fear to add an iconic duo to the list in the near future: Delia Shepard and Kaidan Alenko. While the search for the decorated Alliance Commander is underway, let’s take a walk through their not-so-secret romance, and all of the clues that humans missed of the love blossoming between the two marines.
Shepard and Alenko were said to have met in 2179. Both skilled biotics in their own rights, they were both part of an elite club of Alliance biotics called the Alliance Biotic Force, or the L-Squad informally. Though Alenko is three years Shepard’s senior, it was theorized that he was initiated into the force around the same time as Shepard. An L2 who suffers from the horrendous side effects of the often faulty implant, such as migraines, glitchy fields, and an inclination towards extreme violence, may not have been the first choice for the fraternity.
But it seems as though L2s are not the only ones that fight such violent urges. Delia Shepard, known previously as the Butcher of Torfan, the Iron Hand of C-Sec, and the Black Death, and has numerous warrants out for her arrest related to her crimes against the press, found herself naturally drawn to Alenko’s vicious and savage tendencies. The two struck up a friendship nearly immediately on the basis of bloodlust and carnage.
Whether a romance was immediate or happened over time in the L-Squad is unknown. Reports indicate that the pair often had difficulties keeping their eyes off one another. Perhaps a sort of biotic telepathy, one that is theorized to exist within humans tampered with eezo abilities, was necessary to communicate their barbarity through eye contact--
Garrus set the datapad down on his cot, momentarily disgusted with himself. Then, for good measure, he wiped the history off of the datapad and overloaded its matrix, leaving behind a stark white screen and a faintly acrid smell. As a failsafe, he stomped on the datapad a few times until it was nearly unrecognizable and shards of plastic were wedged firmly underneath his boot.

Pillow thoughts (wip)
Please Enjoy a small blurb of a piece I'm working on cause I love the Idea of these two and can't stop drawing them. cross posted on my Pillowfort
She snores, and drools when she sleeps. He will never tell her. He enjoyed these moments of knowing her, moments that she wouldn’t let anyone else see. Few people knew the real Jack, and even fewer still really knew her. But James did, and he knew she slept in a bed stacked to the roof with pillows, she snored and she drooled, and she had to have a fan running for noise. And she hated the reconstituted eggs they served at Grissom but she loved the eggs he made for her. He knew where all her students were posted after the reapers were defeated. He knew about the bird with the cherry blossom branch tattoo on her right thigh and all the names of her ‘sisters’ on her left arm. He knew about the space she held on her right ass cheek for ‘Something Important’ and hoped one day it might be something that reminded her of him. He knew she secretly loved fleet and flotilla even though she’d never admit it to Tali. She loved her damned Varren, Eezo, who destroyed his shoes and pans. He knew she wasn’t as hard and mean as she liked to portray herself; she was soft and kind deep down.
“I love you.” He whispers to her, petting her head. He could never tell her when she was conscious, She’d probably squish him with her biotics like a bug if he ever did. Her face twitched a smile making him freeze, before her muscles went soft again, the smile fading and his heart began beating again. He lets the breath he held out through his mouth slowly. Closing his eyes and leaning his head back on the headboard, a soft *thunk* of it hitting the back wall. The sound making the Varren at the end of the bed startle and throw his head up, seeming to glare at James for disturbing his sleep. He wasn’t sure how Jack had convinced Sanders to let her bring the menace of a ‘pet’ onto the station but he assumed it had something to do with the protective qualities Eezo offered. Either that or she didn’t ask and instead just brought the Varren on without asking or answering any questions.
Eezo huffs a breath out through his nose laying his head back down on Jack's ankle. James checks the clock across the room on her bar, the red digits showing 03:34. He’d positioned himself poorly and didn’t want to disturb her sleep or risk the wrath of an already displeased Varren. He was a Marine and could sleep basically anywhere in any position but that didn’t mean he wanted to. And 6 hours sitting like this seemed like torture, but he’d torture himself if it made her happy. He glances around her bed grabbing a spare somewhat flat pillow and positioning it behind his head, deciding to grit his teeth for the night, If it meant she stayed half laying on him. He leans his head to the right on the plush of the pillow, closing his eyes to hopefully sleep.

Make me a Home even as I Wander (4345 words) Treat For DanDenbo. Fandom: Mass Effect Trilogy Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Relationships: Jack | Subject Zero/NB Shepard Clone Characters: Jack | Subject Zero, Shepard Clone (Mass Effect), Kaidan Alenko, Other Characters Briefly Mentioned, Eezo (Jack's Varren) Additional Tags: Hurt/Comfort, patching someone up and giving them a new life, Pre-Relationship, Developing Relationship, Fight Club - Freeform, Healing, shepard is dead in this, Post-Canon, Eezo is best boy Preview:
Jack stares, breath caught in her throat as her heart pounds a familiar beat of panic. Her eyes are glued to the person before her as she takes them in. Gaze drawn from the cut of their hair, to the shape of their nose, to the scars that peak out from bloodied bandages wrapped around them like it’s the only thing holding them together as they curl in on themself.
They’re in front of her apartment doorway. They haven’t even looked her way yet and something about that is setting off about a dozen different warning bells in her head because her mind keeps trying to tell her that (Shep-) this person is someone who should have a better awareness of their surroundings. They shouldn’t have this dazed look as they stare at the wall in front of them. They shouldn’t even be alive.
Jack tightens her grip on her groceries as she haphazardly digs around her pocket for her apartment keys. Her eyes never straying from the figure in front of her.
In all honesty it could only ever be one person. Well technically two, but considering she was there when they found Shepard (he was broken and dying and there was nothing she could do to fix it). Jack takes a breath in and holds it as she buries the memories in her head of his broken body just like she did when his casket had been lowered into the ground.
Shepard is dead.
And there’s no Illusive Man to try and bring him back again.
(Sometimes she hates the relief she feels about that. He’d been her friend, the person who was too good for this whole fucking Galaxy. Who’d brought some of that good out in her too despite how much she denied it to his face. After everything… After all that fucking bullshit he at least deserved a fucking happy ending. He didn’t get it though. Instead he could only get the second best thing, which is some peace and fucking quiet for the rest of eternity. And fuck she hopes he’s enjoying it.)
So the person in front of her, bleeding all over her door isn’t Shepard. No, it’s the missing piece of a puzzle everyone thought got solved just before the Reapers were defeated.
Hey.” She says as she finally pulls her keys free, watching as their head turns sharply in her direction. She sees the fear in the way they tense, looking like some of Jack’s kids do when they think an adult might try to get physical with them. She licks her lips, taking note of that and the way a bandage has been wrapped around the left side of their face, covering most of it and their left eye. “You here for a reason?”
They stare a bit, right eye wide in shock before they blink and their face falls into something more neutral. “Someone said you could help me.” They say their words carefully, voice rougher than Shepard’s ever was. Could be an injury, could be they just haven’t had anything to drink in awhile.
“Oh?” She raises an eyebrow. “Anything you want to tell me?”
There’s a couple of phrases she’s given to people. Helps her know who sent a straggler her way and possibly what kind of help they might need. She thinks Shepard would be proud of how she’s been fucking over the whole system that tries to keep track of Biotics. No matter how illegal it is it’s something she knows he would have gotten a kick out of.
They hesitate to answer her, making a face that tells her they really don’t want to say whatever phrase they were given before they sigh and pinch the bridge of their nose. (It’s such a Shepard move that it makes her breath hitch.) “I’m a Biotic God,” they mumble the words, refusing to meet her eyes as she grins at them.
One of her kids sent them then.
“Great, scoot a bit so I can open my door.”
Jack lets them into her home. Making them sit on one of the bar stools she’d stolen about a year ago from a dingy bar down the street. It’s so far one of the few surviving pieces of furniture from when Eezo was growing in a new set of teeth last month.
“Stay put, I got to grab my kit from the bathroom.” She doesn’t bother to look back at them as she sets her groceries on the counter and makes her way further into her apartment. Stepping over Eezo who blocks the hallway, sleeping soundly and tongue hanging out like he doesn’t have a care in the world.
She enters the bathroom, opens up the cannot just below the sink and drags out the heavy medical kit that has never gotten a chance to gather dust from disuse. She can’t even begin to remember how often she’s used this thing. Often enough that Chakwas is constantly stopping by to resupply her. Or maybe that’s just because Chakwas has too much of a soft side and is just checking in on her.
Making sure at least Jack hasn’t run off into the wider Galaxy like some of the others have.
Doesn’t matter really but it’s enough of a thought that Jack forces herself to just stop for a moment. Standing back up to let her hands grip the sink as she breathes in through her nose and out through her mouth.
Fuck.
She has no clue what she’s doing. There’s a familiar face sitting in her home and despite that this person is an absolute stranger.
She breathes in again and holds in long enough to let her lungs burn.

Writer's first line meme
Rules: post the first sentence of your last ten fics. If you haven’t written ten fics, share as many first sentences as you have.
Tagged by @swaps55! Tagging @vhenadahls @theoriginalladya @starrybouquet @that-wildwolf and anyone else who wants to do this!
I have...not written ten things total in the past several years so I'm just gonna go with a liberal interpretation of "most recent" on AO3.
strange is the night where black stars rise (stargate, sam, the one with hastur)
She’s thrown out of the wormhole. By sheer luck, her shoulder, not her head, slams into the stone steps. Sam protectively tucks her head down as far as she can and she comes to a rolling stop on the dry, dead grass.
waves are universal (the heaven in hiding remix) (stargate, sam/jack, the one with time travel and alternate realities)
There’s a break in the guard rotation. Now or never.
church of scars (grey's anatomy, addison, the one with ghosts; unfinished)
“Are you sure?” Jake asks. He slowly zooms the spoon of applesauce toward Paige. Their daughter claps her hands in delight and shows no intention of opening her mouth for food.
i'll find your lips in the street lights (svu, olivia/barba, the one where barba is ace)
If Rafael’s learned one thing in his time with SVU (and he’s learned a lot, far more than he ever thought possible, but he’s trying to keep this to a list of one), it’s that adults telling each other the truth solves a whole host of problems.
gonna set your flag on fire (mass effect, liv/garrus, the one with nora; on pause)
Later, when it’s all over and Nora’s sitting on the back porch of her grandmother’s house watching the sun rise over the lake, she’ll think she should’ve told James she’d take the eezo job.
in this twilight our choices seal our fate (the song in the house of night remix) (svu, olivia/ellliot, the one with too much religious imagery)
Olivia stands at the edge of the driveway just inside the yellow tape. She takes a slow, steady breath. A breath to center herself, a breath to observe the scene. There will be pictures later and she’ll stare at them long enough and hard enough to imprint the front yard on her retinas, but this breath captures the scene alive.
dropsonde (singers in a lower choir remix) (grey's anatomy, addison, addison/alex, the one with the kid; as finished as it's gonna be)
Addison stares at the pair of scuffed brown heels scattered across the entryway in front of her. She stares harder, trying to make them into something they’re not. But the living room lamps are on timers during the week and the ugly one on the end table turns on, illuminating a woman’s shirt tossed over the back of the couch and a pair of black men’s shoes toed off in the hall.

Give me: dadsolas and Jack Harper Must Die 👀
YESSSSSSS
wip title game
dadsolas
dadsolas is just kinda the placeholder title in gdocs for a little piece i'm drabbling out, it's sort of a soft quiet meditative piece with desolas hanging out on the porch swing at his and valis's new house in otoris shortly after they've moved in (so around 2172; by the time of exdiff in 2183+ they're pretty well settled into it) at sunset with his (at the time) youngest child, baby galenia, sleeping on his belly. i say "meditative" cause it's mostly des just lying quietly and observing the world around him and thinking about what brought him there and how things have changed from How They Used To Be before they moved and the chaos of shanxi and its immediate aftermath. i'm kinda using it as stress relief, work's stressful don't panic just sit here on the porch with big brother contemplating life and cooing over the baby it's all gonna be okay
quick snippet, for funsies:
The new house out on the prairie took some getting used to. It was bigger than their flat in Cipritine, big and sprawling and all one floor to hug the ground tight and keep itself safe from the wind's foul tempers. Desolas couldn't hear what everyone else was doing anymore, not unless they were all close together. He couldn't fall asleep to the drone of traffic outside, or wake up to the upstairs neighbors doing their morning PT. When he looked out the kitchen window, all he saw was a sea of plant life stretching from the edge of the garden to the line of trees a good two-minute sprint away. They'd had to finally break down and get an SUV to get around instead of walking everywhere. If they needed to get to base, it was a hefty drive away, and he'd told his superiors they were better off sending a hover for him. It was too spacious, too isolated, too quiet.
The sunset was nice, though, he supposed. And the porch swing. Val had been right about the porch swing.
The kids liked having a backyard, too, and he did like seeing them chase each other around and investigate all the plants and local animals that lived in or wandered across their new stomping grounds. The last owners had been an older couple who kept to their garden and didn't do much else, and Valis was happy with keeping it that way, and the local conservation laws were pretty stern anyway, so they had all kinds of things roaming around that he'd only gotten to see in pictures when he was Taniria's age. It was good for their lungs, Valis had reminded him, and their growing bodies. Turian kids needed to run and leap and play-hunt at their leisure, and it was better for them to do it in their natural environment.
He inhaled, long and slow, letting the warm summer dusk fill his lungs with evening blooms and nocturnal prey. No eezo-burn of skycars, no mingling gunsmoke-blood of strangers he couldn't see. Fresh air wasn't so bad, really. Maybe he'd missed that, in all the years since he'd been away from home Ifura remote bases.
Jack Harper Must Die
jhmd is the final major story installment of my big no-reapers au exponential differentiation! without spoiling too much, because the twist in the itlog climax is very sexy of me and i have to keep some secrets, two years have passed since the end of in the land of giants, and the galaxy is on the brink of war. the hegemony and the alliance are at each other's throats, the galaxy is reeling from [REDACTED], interspecies cooperation is at an all-time low, and in the middle of it all is cerberus, stirring shit up and causing problems on purpose. the illusive man, now the sole leader of the organization after the deaths of ben hislop in 2183 and eva core in 2184, has thrown off the mask of benevolence and slammed the pedal to the metal on the bus to crazytown. matteo shepard has spent the time chasing leads and solving problems around the galaxy as a full spectre in their own right (with the help of jack nought and a couple other friends they pick up as they go, of course).
and just as tensions are spiking ever-higher, with word of human colonies rallying to cerberus's banner and fighting back against their alliance governance (and whispers of the alliance turning to outside sources for help suppressing them, including the much-feared turian hastatim, only further fanning the flames), the leader of charon squad, cerberus's elite squad of human experiments that attacked eden prime in 2183 and [REDACTED] in 2184, is ready to talk - but only to shepard. but when shepard arrives to hear what viktoriya has to say, they learn she's disappeared instead, taking their best possible lead for finding jack harper once and for all with her.
so off they go to finish things, one way or another. their team is splintered and needs to be reunited: garrus is a stay-at-home dad to twins with ambassador rennis and reluctant to leave, saren is retired, nihlus is in a remote outpost in terminus caring for his injured mother, morinth is... somewhere, and so on and so forth. following a hunch from their last interaction with viktoriya, shepard seeks the arterius brothers out on palaven, only to find desolas has been deployed on a top-secret mission and promoted valis to brigadier general in his wake to prevent her from following. so they follow the trail: find desolas to find viktoriya to find harper. along the way, they make new friends (like rising star james vega) and recruit old (avitus wasn't going to let his best friends have all the fun without him), and puzzle out exactly what harper's grand master plan is - and learn hidden secrets about the history of the galaxy they never anticipated.
the whole thing is building towards the grand dramatic final confrontation between harper and desolas, finally resolving their conflict from shanxi one way or another. neither is the same man they were 29 years ago, but in different ways: desolas has calmed and settled with time and distance (and lots of therapy), where harper has grown bitter and hateful. desolas made the choice and active effort to move on and be the better man valis wanted him to be, while harper has let himself dwell on the past and obsess over it. the last of the secrets around what happened at shanxi come out whether they like it or not; it's a clash of titans, and when the dust clears, the face of the galaxy will be changed forever.

AU, where Hawke defies the narrative and saves both of their siblings and, in another universe, but at the SAME TIME, Shepard defies the narrative and saves both Kaiden and Ashley, creating a double-sided fracture in the barrier between these universes, SHUNTING Thedas into Mass Effect's Milky Way and throwing a MASSIVE wrench into BOTH timelines.
Fade rifts begin appearing all over the galaxy. Salarians and quarians begin awakening with magical powers. Dwarf biotics. Elves with guns. Krogans and Qunari are getting along really well in a way that terrifies EVERYBODY. Hawke and Shepard kiss. Liara and Leliana kiss. Polyamory. Sera learns about the Asari and becomes even more obsessed with them than she was about dwarves and qunari, until she learns about krogan women. Lesbianism intensifies. Varrick writes a new series of novels following Commander Shepard and the crew of the Normandy. Andrastians scramble to find a way for all of this to fit into their belief system. Jack and Fenris fuck nasty, then try to kill each other, then fuck nastier. Anders quickly becomes racist (no, I will not explain). Cullen tries to use eezo as a rebound drug from lyrium and dies.

Citadel Fashion Week: Casual Jack and Eezo
Despite having ample warning, I'm late for the party for @citadelfashionweek 's #citadelfashionweeks2021 project. In my defense, everything happened. Everything. You name it, it happened.
Anyway, here is my late contribution for casual week.
