The Ryder twins, as I write them, got exposed to Element Zero in utero. They got way luckier than their mom, and now they are both able to use biotics, but the development of their abilities went in different directions.
It felt like Anatole was born to become a powerful biotic specialist, to wield this kind of power. He feels it almost intuitively; he's so in tune with biotics that it seems that Element Zero is buzzing, blooming under his hands, fluid, potent, and powerful, like a tsunami. Even in the eyes of a non-human, his biotics are impressive. He packs quite a punch and generally deals a whole lot more damage than, say, his sister, especially if it's slow-paced.
Naïse, on the other hand, as a jack of all trades, also does well in biotics (but not as well as Anatole), but hers are in the same line as her other skills, like tech and combat development profiles.
If Anatole makes eezo ring, boil, and as if revel in its own freedom, under Naïse's guidance, it swoops in, hits you under the gut, and twists from a tight spindle into those quicksand-like, destructive pinpoint strikes, into arrows, waves, and walls.

so sad that we didn't get a follow up game for andromeda if for no other reason then because I never got to play out the full arc of my ryder looking hauntedly at himself in the mirror realizing he very much is his father's son in more ways than he's strictly comfortable with
(by default sara always seems to me to be the twin who's the most obviously like alec -- with small variances based on how you play her if she's the PC twin, she's always presented as more driven, competetive and academically minded than scott, who's framed in the family dynamic more as the underachiever/slacker fuckup twin. as an example, see: the conversation you have with alec about the sibling who's in coma at the beginning of the game. when you're scott they bond over joking that sara would be so pissed to be out of commission because she's been planning to be the first to scale every mountain, and when you're sara it's that scott never liked to get up in the morning anyway, how typical of him. (even in jest I feel like this indicates a slightly unpleasant dynamic where one of the few reliable tactics that work for sara to get connection with her dad is for both of them to turn on scott to mock him. which like. very real type of interpersonal dynamic that exists, and one of the character aspects I like the most in andromeda for all that it's uncomfortable, it feels quite subtle and well observed.) you can make sara a bit more neurotic/nervous and awkward and/or charmingly dorky when playing as her and you can make scott a bit more serious, but these aspects of the characters hold true no matter what. which for the record I absolutely love! it's the thing the hawke family also provides in da2, being able to see the dynamics that lead to your character being the way they are alllll the way back and building on it.
hOWEVER with my scott. this apparent disconnect between himself and his dad in terms of character traits (and the lack of communication in that relationship that stood in the way of letting him see that his father was a lot of other things behind the fragile hard outer shell of him than he wanted to show) means that as time goes on scott is fucking blindsided by all the common traits that start popping up under pressure. which you can actually start to introduce in the game itself, too -- if you choose mostly the logical and casual options, it's almost freaky how much ryder starts to sound like a younger and more irreverent version of their dad. (the most interesting version of liam's loyalty quest for me is actually the one where you go full professional and chew him out afterwards, and as liam storms off you can practically SEE ryder arrive at the thought 'oh my god I have become my father' in real time fhdsakj. in general some of the most interesting moments in me:a to me happen when you manage to break away from video game people pleaser mode.)
especially the things alec was willing to do to not lose his wife, to not be alone, he'd rather she be alive and pissed with him than gone forever because that's how desperately he needed her to exist... I think one day scott will look up and go '...oh fuck' at realizing the lengths he would go for someone he loves, and that he has the means to do it too and would make his father's (very bad to be clear) choice all over again if push came to shove. keeping horrible secrets is just the family tradition what does it matter if the weight of them grows heavier and heavier to bear over the years these are family heirlooms you know. I mean, my guy romanced reyes, so you already know he's got something deeply deeply wrong with him lol but this horrors of love side of him only adds to it. scott ryder got his fundamental lack of inner peace from his father and his social skills and abysmal taste in men from his mother
#mass effect#mass effect andromeda#scott ryder#ryder twins#with a new game on the horizon it's wall to wall andromeda slander yet again and like. sunglasses on. i do not see it.#I cannot read all of a sudden. leave me alone your opinion is irrelevant to me at this juncture#holding the nuanced opinion that a game wasn't all that it could have been and that there still was a lot more to value in it#than people give it credit for is always a doomed hill to die on but you know me. life long da2 defender&lover. I love a hill#love to die on my hill with honour and integrity rather than be mindlessly reactive in some of the most tedious ways I've ever seen#andromeda is literally fine with great combat that is hardly ever recognized and glimmers of brilliance here and there#(the sheer feeling of scale of the final vault never gets its due and it sucks because it's genuinely so impressive)#and people talk about it with almost religious levels of horror and disgust like it's the gaming antichrist. grow the fuck up or get out#anyway. I still think about her and fondly (mass effect andromeda). I should call her

This new Reyes x Sage Ryder fic is eating my brain alive, but I've planned it all out now and I'm super happy with it. It should stay below 10 chapters, aaand hopefully it'll be a good mix of action, horror, drama, and some romance.
I really like that I'm writing something with a Ryder who isn't the Pathfinder, and that I get to explore a very twisted sibling relationship between Sage and her brother - I'm still deciding whether his name will be Sebastian or Seth.
I do know that the twins won't look or act anything alike. Sage looks like her mother and is petite, pale, with white blonde hair and pale lavender eyes, and she is fairly quiet by fun-loving. Her brother looks like Alec and is tall, with dark blue eyes, tanned skin and black hair, and is very intense and over emotional. He and Sage have an identical tattoo - Azalea flowers. She got it first and he copied her.
Character art is by Beemot and AlexCogginArt.

another weird thing about mass effect Andromeda is that you don't really know your own backstory? you're in the peacecorps maybe? but you only find out through telling other people. it's more removed somehow from Shepard's backstory where you choose it, and you don't talk about it. other people talk about it but Shepard often just shuts the conversation down.
I wish you'd gotten to choose a background for the twins, even just two options each. maybe Sara could have been an archeologist or a peace Corp officer. Scott could have been either a geologist or an astronaut type? maybe a third option for both of them and if you pick it for both, they did it together. just a littllleee more customizing would help me connect with them faster honestly

Mass Effect Andromeda fanart! Featuring my Ryder twins, Jet and Jackie, on their last day in the Milky Way.
Been a while since I’ve drawn either of them, so might as well go overboard and make three whole panels with the both of them <3

N7Month Challenge - Day 19: Volus + Day 20: Drone + Day 21: Omni-tool
Sara grinned and activated the band on her wrists that looked a little like the watch she had been wearing previously. But it was so much more than a watch as its activation caused an orange holographic interface to appear over the entire length of her forearm. She pressed a few buttons and waited for the other person to answer the call.
Scott's face appeared on another hologram hovering over the keyboard. He had the same wide grin on his face. "Look at you!"
"No, look at you!" Sara giggled. "You're hovering over my arm."
"You too! This is great," Scott lowered his voice and leaned closer to the camera.
"Just imagine, we can talk anytime, no matter where we are." Scott's smile grew mischievous.
"Dad said he can log into them and check what we're up to though." The smile on Sara's face was replaced by a small pout.
Scott on the other hand was still grinning. "Yeah, because he has time for that."
Sara couldn't deny Scott made a good point and the smile returned on her face. "Okay... what do you have in mind."
"They are way too young to have an Omni-tool, Alec." Ellen sighed to herself as she watched her two kids being dragged up to the apartment by a C-Sec officer. Granted, it wasn't the first time it happened and wouldn't be the last, but it was the first time they had made it into their communities news feed.
Ellen had to admire the skill that had been involved in their little heist. She didn't know which one of her troublemakers had discovered the hacking tool on the omni-tool, but one of them had hacked a drone and had sent it into a shop. The shop owner hadn't been too pleased with the drone harassing him out of nowhere and had called C-Sec, causing a larger than necessary operation. As the C-Sec officer explained to her, the Volus thought someone was trying to steal his shop's secrets.
She would have a long talk with the twins later and she would make sure they both did community service for it. She would also have to limit their Omni-Tool's function. No way her kids were responsible enough to have access to a hacking tool.

Can you tell me about The Project, pt 2 👀
Ah! So THAT one is the title of an upcoming chapter for my ME:A long fic, The Paths You Take. It's given me a lot of false starts, so I changed gears recently and decided to try it from a different character's POV haha.
Below the cut as always, not sure who's read what and who's played what haha. Thanks for the ask!
It was funny, Sara thought as she eased into her seat, how you could traverse the wide expanse of time and space, find yourself somewhere completely new, only to wind up in situations that hit a little too close to home. Meetings like this one, for instance, her brother at her side and Cora on his other, three members of the original human Pathfinder Team arrayed across from Initiative Directors, and it was hard not to think of times before, similar meetings in similar rooms, her brother tense and fidgeting with restless energy, Cora calm, cool, and serene, and Sara deceptively relaxed in the face of censure.
It just wasn't their dad on the other side of the table, this time.
Sara settled in her chair, crossing one leg over the other, arms braced on the rests, and kept her expression carefully blank as she examined the group of people she'd only met briefly since waking up from her coma. Director Tann, of course, eyes inscrutable but tension undeniable; Addison Foster, sour-faced and irritated; Nakmor Kesh, the Krogan sitting proudly straight and offering a toothy grin to the humans across from her. A friendly gesture, Sara surmised, especially when she noted Scott's shoulders relaxing a touch beside her in response.
The Turian, Kandros, also seemed less than hostile, having been the last to arrive and giving Scott a polite nod of acknowledgement before settling into his seat beside Addison.
There was a long, heavy moment drawn taut between the two groups before Tann finally leaned forward, clasping his hands atop the table in front of him.
"Now that we are all accounted for," he began, and those dark eyes were fixed on Scott's, "I would like to formally begin this meeting. My assistant," he nodded to another Salarian not seated at the table with them, but rather situated at a small desk in the corner, "will record and take notes for posterity. It seems we have been too…lax, in our communications, our…expectations, for how things work in the Initiative."
You disobeyed direct orders, and now I am taking steps to ensure you can't weasel your way out of the consequences should you try it again, Sara translated. The data leak of Scott's findings for Meridian had been a masterful stroke, if it had been done deliberately, and Sara had a feeling that was the case. Information, something concrete, would've been preferable, but she liked to think her instincts hadn't dulled too much during her excessively long nap.
When your twin was an impulsive force of nature, you learned a thing or two about diplomacy.
"We're paving a new way forward," Tann went on, reaching out for a datapad that sat within easy reach. "Adapting, learning, growing. Things were never going to be perfect -- no one who sighed up for this opportunity expected things to go exactly as planned. Be that as it may, Initiative leadership nonetheless developed…protocols. Contingencies. Plans and backup plans, and backup plans for our backup plans. Clear directives aimed to minimize friction, to encourage…collective effort."
The gravity field shifted beside her, the disturbance as familiar as her own, and she moved her hands into her lap in a quiet, easy gesture, sending an eddy right back. Keep calm, Scotty. She wasn't sure what it was about Tann's words that seemed to unsettle him, beyond the usual lack of patience her brother had for pointless pretty talk, and felt a sliver of her own frustration try to worm its way through.
Months of missing out, and now I'm stuck learning the politics of this place on the fly.
But she'd learn. She always did.

the true mass effect experience is spending ages making a personalised character just to run into a random npc that looks almost identical to them
#this has happened to me TWICE#my shepard looked almost the exact same as TWO SEPERATE npc characters in the original trilogy#and my Ryder also looked incredibly similar to a random npc I found in the med bay#like what’s the point in spending an hour getting the details right if it looks like I have a secret twin#SO MUCH EFFORT#WASTED#mass effect#mass effect andromeda#me1#me2#me3#me4#mass effect 1#mass effect 2#mass effect 3#mass effect 4#Mass effect Ryder#commander shepard#pathfinder#bioware#ea games#mass effect games#femshep#Jane shepard#John shepard#broshep#Sara Ryder#Scott Ryder
