I love the idea that after J2 gets called Bluejay, J3 goes through a phase of trying out different names for himself. He's just. He's fine with the fact that he isn't Jace, he's just sick of being Three.

J2 is endlessly supportive whenever he has a new idea, meanwhile J4 is just constantly shooting down every one of his suggestions.

Jasper doesn't suit you. Jesse's a great name for a cowboy, less so for a sorcerer. You're far too old to pull off Jax.

One day Jace is yelling at J3, and it gives him a great idea and he bounces up to J4 like, guess what Jace just called me.

And J4 has to talk J3 out of naming himself Harlot.

I love all this! J4 frantically scribbling in notebooks is so real.

My logic for the Jace-derivative names is that J3 has gotten used to and likes the J part of J3. It's the 3 he doesn't like. Also, he's still going to get called Jace during school hours. And if he can pretend like people are just calling him a short version of his real name, it'd be less grating.

And there's also a vibe of 'if I pick something easy and similar to what they were already calling me, it'll actually get used by Porter and Jace'. Kinda like if a trans person wanted to be called they/them, but no one was using they/them, so they add in a binary option because then at least they can stop having to correct people, if that makes any sense at all.

As the originator of Bluejay I have some formless thoughts on the names for the other two that don’t necessarily have to be integrated mass fandom but

Esme @neerdowellnarrator suggestion for j3 n j4 to be magpie (greed connection) and canary (the omen, the one trying to warn the others to get out before it’s too late) is genuinely brilliant I love it so much

I will say, tho. I think J2 is fully ready to glom onto Bluejay as his name name but for j3 and j4 the bird nicknames are just that. They’re Porter pet names but that’s not who they Are.

J4 wants a person name. She’s been mulling this over for a while and she’s been trying to find the right one but nothing has clicked yet (nothing has clicked for me yet ok)

J3 is the most ambivalent about being j3. He does not like being Three but doesn’t mind being J3. For some reason the distinction feels important. In some ways I actually think he tries to own being J3.

Doesn’t stop him from playing around with what the others call him tho but the tone when he workshops is a lot more unserious than j4’s like. Scribbled frenzied notebook of ideas and crossed out names.

J4 wants a name that is not evocative of Jace at all. J3 doesn’t mind a Jace-derivative. Jess, Jax, Jasper etc (that’s an Elijah @delinquentbookworm special thank you) (on a personal note I actually like all of these for him. Even if Jess is mainly bc I can’t stop thinking abt Jess Ross’s cabbage tramp stamp. J3 wishes that was him)

Obligatory disclaimer, I am not a classicist and haven't read the Illiad or the Oresteia trilogy in a hot minute. I do however have a bachelors degree in Jace Stardiamond studies and am working on my vibes-based PhD thesis so actually I'm an expert and everything I say is correct. Now let's talk about the jaceclones:

J2 as Iphigenia:

J2 the innocent, J2 the acolyte, J2 the sacrificial lamb. Iphigenia was a priestess of Artemis, you know, before that same goddess ordered her death. She spent her life in service to her god only to be murdered for her father's fuck-up. What justice.

Iphigenia does not know she is going to her death. She thinks she is going to her wedding. She does not know until the last moment that the alter she stands before is for sacrifice, not matrimony. She's so busy looking into the eyes of her "fiance" that she does not see the knife.

I'll say this for J2. He sees the knife. He saw the knife a mile away and still put on the veil (obscuring his view) and went to the alter. His god has decreed it. Maybe he will get to die a married man. Maybe his blood staining holy stones is the closest he'll get to divinity.

In the kind versions, Iphigenia is spirited away by Artemis at the last second. God says to Iphigenia, to Isaac, to Bluejay: "I was only kidding. I don't want you dead. I just ordered your murder as a test and you passed. I love you."

We tell a lot of stories in our little circle. Very few of them are kind.

J3 as Helen:

J3 wishes his face would launch a thousand ships. He wants to be so desirable he starts a war and so empty that no one asks what he thinks about it. He wants a goddess of lust to declare him her favorite. He wants to be wanted so much that men swear to kill and die for the chance to have him.

He wants to stare at the bodies of soldiers who died for him and say "oh what a whore am I." He wants lustful men to put words in his mouth to degrade him. He wants to be mistranslated in a way that makes him sexier, more alluring. He wants to be so lost in translation he ceases to be a person and becomes only an hourglass silhouette on a much-fingered page.

He wants everyone to want him so badly they hate him for it. He wants them to never forgive him.

J3 wants to be Helen so badly and fails to realize that he is already her in every way that matters: trapped and miserable, with no agency over his own life.

J4 as Electra:

Electra's sister's blood starts her story. She sees her sister, Iphigenia, die with a trusting smile, she sees her aunt, Helen, be stolen and locked away. She sees that the only way out is through. She sees red.

Red as in anger, certainly, but also red as in blood as she murders her mother, who murdered her father, who murdered her sister, who murdered nobody at all and died first anyway. Is this justice? This is the justice the gods will give her.

Electra's brother will suffer for their crime. Electra herself, however, walks away. She washes the blood off her hands. She tries to build a life.

J4 would murder her creator and walk away. She wants to. She wants to kill her god and save herselves. In the good ending, she does. In the bad ending...

J4 as Cassandra:

J4 knows what's coming. She knows they're doomed. She can do nothing. She rages, she screams, she refuses to fall into Porter's bed, she tries to save the others from doing the same. It's not enough.

Cassandra is captured and ensalved by Iphigenia's murderer, and she herself is murdered by Electra's murder victim. An alternate version of herself trying to save her, but, like J4 being too late to save herself.

And normal Jace and Porter are confused, exhausted, and forced to deal with things

Future and alternate clones could have potentially survived in their times and made it over so now we also have a jaceclone army

I was thinking some more about Jaces clone spell and the fact that in the final battle when he the original died the one remaining clone was still alive.

Like it’s clearly not a concentration spell or anything that’s dependant on Jace continuing to cast and I doubt dispell magic would get rid of the clones cause that just feels to easy/ obvious weakness.

So what if there’s actually no way for Jace to stop the spell, he uses all his meta magic and sorcery points creating them so he has nothing left to undo reality and get rid of them.

That is to say Jace creating a clone/clones for a battle, extra help or just to do a task he doesn’t wanna do and the clone to turn to him; “everything good? You need me for anything or can I leave now?” Jace is like thanks man appreciate it and no need for you to stick around, and casually pulls a knife from his coat and plunges it into his exact copies neck.

The clone bleeds out in a matter of seconds and Jace casts some spell to clean the mess and get rid of the body, before going back to teaching a shocked class of first years.

All that to say I’m loving the idea of Jace being so used to the death/killing of his clones to be point of being utterly desensitised to it and forgetting that others may find it upsetting/ horrifying etc.

He’s without really thinking asked Porter if he could just break his clones neck and burn the body somewhere since he’s in a rush and also trying to be economical offered to let Zara drink his clone dry if she wants (Zara definitely does, Vampires are predatory by nature and drinking her entire fill while also ending her prey lights up parts of Zara’s brain she tries really hard to control)

Also just to be clear, the Jace clones are fully aware of their existence as illusionary doubles and the fact they will end up being murdered once they’re no longer currently useful. They’re also all absolutely ok with this and completely chill about the situation which honestly makes people (Jawbone mainly) kinda worried about Jaces mental state since they are copies of him.

J3 realises that they all have the potential to make clones of themselves, if they wanted. He points this out to the other two, and before he can even finish the sentence, J4 is interrupting with "NO. No, absolutely not. We are not creating people just to drag them into this mess."

I think the thing I love the most about this is that while Jace had 10 lines, J2 had at max three. That doesn't matter. He's still got so much capacity for angst

since I love the idea of the Jaceclones being stand-ins and intermediary’s for Jace when he and Porter are on a break, and like, lowkey it was implied that sometimes happens in IYWD a part of me thinks the j2 fic should be set in that same timeline. But also I can’t reconcile the fact that like. Porter is so devastatingly obviously in love with at least some fuckin version of Jace in IYWD yet would be able to fuck a j2 clone. Makes IYWD a lot less impactful. But also Porter being devastatingly in love with Jaceprime is kinda the point. Like. At the same time, the clone deserves it. The clone is like ok. So Porter can fuck post-Jace with the intent of recapturing what he had with pre-Jace, that’s beautiful and real and true. But if I wanna climb that tree just so Porter can try and recapture w/ me what he has with jaceprime all of a sudden we have a fuckin problem

When Jaceprime is in a self-loathing doom spiral he does go to shit talk the jaceclones. He tries not to think too hard about the fact that everything he’s saying to them are just his negative thoughts and insecurities that keep him up at night. Baby go to therapy or admit you have a humiliation kink!! Let the clones be happy, they’re not you anymore, they’re their own people now, Jace!! They all just got into Hudol!!!!

Anyway there is a part of me that does think the phonesex definitely happened like Porter definitely drunk dialed Jace one night and Jace degraded him until he came but like. Jace in his mind is like "that doesn't count b/c its phonesex". So all this insistence on maintaining his boundaries and actually trying to do the right thing (while also fucking over the jaceclones in the process obviously) is complete bullshit. As far as the timeline goes, in my heart if its Definitely A Thing That Happened it only happened once but through infinite jace theory all things are possible so if we push this then what

Tbh i do think J2 and J3 being The Way They Are is part of why Porter... Like... he calls jace with the intent of maybe jace will come crawling back but the degradation doesn't hurt and is like actually is this maybe what i wanted because like? J2 and j3 will do anything for him. And like, that's what he wants he supposes, what he always wanted with jace but that's not conflict, thats not conquest, where is the fun without a little fight?

I do think it would be funny if J2 and j3 found out about this. Like J2 would maybe be a little upset but also be like oh ok. I mean. Whatever you think is best (while silently thinking about the last time jace and porter were together it was this huge fight, he hasn't been jaceporter pantheon pilled yet and is holding out hope that porter can be his), meanwhile J3 is like. Actually can i get in on that. Im so sad like landlines aren't really a thing anymore bc i just know j3 would LOVE to be listening in on the landline if that were the case. The cogs are definitely turning

That being said I do think my favorite point to slip this into the timeline is right after J2 kissed Porter for the first time (and j2's first handjob yipeeeee). I just think it would be fun.... Because Porter is still thinking about how kissing Bluejay felt the same as kissing Jace but this is also right after his fight with J2 in which j2 is trying to be so so supportive but porter is just frustrated bc J2 won't give him a straight answer on what he actually wants or thinks its always just whatever you want! He misses jace. This isn't jace. This is so much of what jace used to be Before porter. But it felt the same, right?

So he calls Jace and Jace might even be able to kind of guess what is up because he could FEEL it, he could feel porter's anger and frustration that Jace is not the one there with him. and jace is sort of mocking him for it, like are you really fucking the clone? Son of a bitch, you're fucking the clone aren't you? wow you really can't move on can you, how pathetic is that. And after all that i'm it and you know it. And now you can't have me and that makes you sick. (and jace's life right now is miserable and fucked but at least he has that sort of power right? being able to deny porter something that he wants?)

And like. Porter expected or maybe hopes jace would crumble but he KNOWS he's been fucking up this entire time. He knows this is different, jace isn't coming back. So maybe Jace means it when he says well i do miss when you fuck me. I hate you but at least i miss that mught. At least your cock never made me mad. (And he has fucked everything in jace's life, so why would that not be the truth? Maybe he's the instrument here). All this talk about ascension and godhood meanwhile, the only time you liked yourself was when you were pleasing me. Something Something Jace Cool Girl Thesis right? "I'm the cunt you married. And porter is thinking maybe that's true. He misses when he was fucking jace and jace would say his name like it was something of reverence. Like it meant anything at all. girl help im making mechanical spell list decisions informed by character traits for jace + each of the jaceclones because im insane.

so i think. because theyre all jace. they all know the classic combo of prestidigitation, mage hand, and message. like mechanically and for fic purposes i think they need to have all of these. assuming theyre all level 20 sorcerers then they each have three cantrips left and this is where things get interesting

for jace: shocking grasp, acid splash, and frostbite. all very solid in terms of damage type coverage, obviously shocking grasp has to be there bc it's a sex thing, i think this speaks to his mass hallucinated backstory of being a former adventurer and needing some combat cantrips in case of emergency

for j2: mending, blade ward, and friends. j2 has NO damage dealing cantrips because he's a little darling. he's more of a "bat your eyelashes and ask to be told youre pretty" guy than a "destroy maim kill kill murder death" guy, and not even in a manipulative way thats just who he is

for j3: minor illusion, lightning lure, and mind sliver. i'm actually super proud of this one bc i think this speaks to j3's whole vibe of "look pretty on the outside, draw you in close, and then get inside your head"

for j4: sword burst, green flame blade, and booming blade. all knife based and all requiring you to get way too close to her before she strikes. i think these fit her vibe so well <3
