The Shadows Take Family.
(Warning, this is an alternate universe horror story for Alan Wake 2. I wrote this and originally posted it in a google doc in the Remedy discord. My mutuals should all add me on discord I like talking about Alan Wake and nerd stuff on there.) "FBC Investigation Department Steven Yoke reporting in, Code 7721, More shadows have appeared, and I was sent to investigate." The agent spoke into the ham radio he had in his cabin. It was lit up like a christmas tree and unable to be invaded by the taken. Truthfully the taken were the least of his worries, he killed at least 3 of them when he had gotten here, using a flashlight and a suppressed HK USP to avoid any loud noises alerting the townsfolk. His fears weren’t about the Koskela’s or the taken but instead the cult. Steve though hadn't heard anything recently from the cult of the trees. Just some chatter that a possible leader in their organization had disappeared and was suspected to have become one of the taken. His suspects as to who were short in numbers, Blum, Ilmo, Jaako, Rose, fucking Pat Maine for all he knew. This town wasn't his favorite place to be stationed, the only good thing was the coffee, and even that seemed to be getting worse every time he was there. He would hear something outside of his cabin, a voice corrupted but recognizable from the advertisements in town, a leader in the two towns of Watery and Bright Falls. "And AlL BeCause of your SHIT COFFEE!" An originally humorous line corrupted by the Dark Presence taking him. It was Ilmo Koskela. "They got Ilmo Koskela, the shadows got Ilmo Koskela this is not a drill." He said grabbing his flashlight and gun getting ready to take out the taken, the broken deer mask half resting on Ilmo's face as Steven stepped out. "FBC FREEZE MOTHERFUCKER!" He said but before he could shoot, clonk, he was knocked out by something else from behind, he was dragged to the lake. MIA isn't too bad for a man who's probably never able to retire. He would still be reaching for his side arm besides the suppressed pistol, it was a Gen 2 Glock 35 which had a flashlight equipped to it. Before he could even try to shoot the taken though something else had happened. Ilmo and the Taken that trapped the agent both tried to drag him into the water, Ilmo quoting his ads some more. "It's not a-moosing!" As he was speaking more, and more getting close to the lake a powerful light was shown on the two, his brother Jaako wouldn't let him be corrupted for long, Two shots from a pump action shotgun rang out. Jaako got ready for the ritual to kill the taken. "I'm sorry brother." Jaako said as he grabbed the knife and drove it into his brother's chest slowly carving out his heart. It was the ritual, it was something Jaako hated doing to those he knew. But now they weren’t the locals, they were monsters. It sickened him that this was needing to happen but he understood why. "We watch from the trees, We fight the shadows!" The other cult members chanted as they took the heart out and placed it down on the table, pulling out a page of Hemingway's writing and replacing it with one from Rose about the brother dying a death to a cult. They put the clicker in the hole in his chest and clicked. Soon after they got ready for the next one, Jaako was still heart broken. All he hoped was that this would give his brother the rest he deserved.

Day 12 - Mask
Day 12 of DeerCon24 When all is done, Ilmo looks upon their masks and despairs Read on AO3 here
When they started, of course, they didn’t have the masks. There was no cult, just a few members of the local communities of Bright Falls and Watery, who wanted to keep their homes safe.
But when all the best intentions and warnings and attempts to steer people away from the dangers of the lake failed, something had to change.
The cult had been Ilmo’s idea.
With the ritualistic way they had to kill the people who returned from the lake, they were halfway there anyway. Something to spark fear in the locals and visitors alike—keep them safe and away from the woods. Their uniforms started off as a mere practicality, whatever face covering they could find, a long coat to hide themselves, and whatever weapons they were carrying. The cult of the Tree; nonsense really, but it made a clear link between the made-up cult and the dangerous woods.
The deer masks had been Jaako’s idea.
Something unnerving, something symbolic. Jaako had made the first two, for himself and Ilmo, of course, from materials left over from that year’s Deerfest. And when, during their patrol, someone took one look at them and fled, well, that just cemented the deer masks as part of the cult. Their membership hovered just about in the double digits, so it wasn’t hard to keep the whole cult supplied, as long as the Koskela’s various businesses pulled through.
When it was all over. When Wake was free and the Taken stopped appearing, and the Cult of the Tree was no longer needed. When Ilmo returned—alone—to their workshop, now just his. When he looked at his and his brother’s masks, hung up side by side, ready and waiting for them to go out into the woods once more.
It was only then that he allowed himself to fall to the floor and cry for what he had lost.

So heart warming kwkdkxj <33
i'll be home for christmas
Ilmo Koskela & Jaakko Koskela
A little Christmas-themed Koskela Brothers blurb to ward off the Sunday scaries AND the Holiday heebie-jeebies. Takes place between the events of Alan Wake and Alan Wake 2
Read it on ao3
The darkness was closing in around him as Ilmo ran as fast as his legs could take him. The boxes jostled in his arms and he could feel the sweat gathering on his brow despite the frigid temperatures. His boots pounded against the snow-covered path in a steady rhythm. His mind did not wander; getting to the cabin was the only thing that mattered. The fate of the night rested on his shoulders.
A single, yellow light shone in the distance. Ilmo fought against the cold wind to push on towards the warm light. The shadows crept closer, seeming to suffocate him the closer he got to the luminated cabin. With strained breathing, he barrelled towards the door. He was met with blinding light, warmth, and the smell of mulled wine.
“Hyvää joulua!” Ilmo shouted, dropping the brightly wrapped gifts on the floor and throwing his arms in the air. Two blurs of red and green raced towards him like bullets and he was quick to scoop them up in his arms.
“Merry Christmas, Uncle Ilmo!” the two children shouted, almost in unison.
Another face peaked into the entry way at the greeting. Jaakko sighed, a mixing bowl on his hip. “Hyvää joulua, Ilmo. Glad to see you could make it.”
Ilmo turned his attention from the two children that clung to him to his brother. He was wearing the ridiculous “Kiss the Chef” apron that Ilmo had gotten him the prior year. The sight made him guffaw, filling the cabin with laughter. He put the kids down gently before loading their arms with the presents he had brought and directing them towards the sitting room. He turned back to Jaako with the same stupid grin on his face.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world, dear brother,” he said, ruffling Jaakko’s hair and pushing past him into the kitchen.
The small cooking space was filled with smells that made Ilmo’s mouth water. There was ham in the oven, glӧgi on the stove, and a steaming plate of lipeäkala on the counter. A basket full of dinner rolls was already set on the dining table, which was set with the “good china” (ie: not paper plates and plastic forks and knives, but actual plates and silverware).
Jaakko followed his brother into the kitchen, folding butter into a bowl of mashed potatoes as he watched Ilmo dip his pinky finger into the glӧgi to taste it. It was a quick dip, as the mulled wine was still simmering and therefore still extremely hot. Ilmo immediately put his finger in his mouth to soothe the burn and Jaakko just rolled his eyes.
“It’s good,” Ilmo said around his finger.
Jaakko set the potatoes on the table and went into the cupboard. He took out two clear glass cups, and filled them both with glӧgi before giving one to Ilmo.
“Kippis!” they cheered before sipping on the wine.
The oven dinged and Jaakko ushered his brother out of the way with oven mitts. As he pulled the baking tray out, he threw a glance over his shoulder to the sitting room, where Charlie and Charlene were busy separating their presents into piles.
“Those were the gifts from the post office, right?” he asked in a hushed voice.
Ilmo just stared at him wide-eyed. A moment of silence passed as Jaakko set the ham down on the counter and turned to his brother. He was about to start going off on him when Ilmo smiled innocently.
“Those were the gifts from Santa . I don’t know what this post office you talk about is,” he shrugged as he sat down at one end of the table and crossed one leg over the other.
Between the two brothers, the table was set quickly. Charlie and Charlene were corralled into the kitchen, where they sat opposite of each other, mirroring their father and uncle.
“Now,” Ilmo started, “Have you two been good this year?”
Charlie immediately piped up. “We’ve been sooooooo good, Uncle Ilmo.”
Charlene nodded enthusiastically. “Yeah, so good.”
Ilmo gave Jaakko a skeptical look, “What do you think, Jaakko?”
The two children turned almost instantaneously as their father seemed to contemplate their behavior over the past year. Within a moment’s passing, Jaakko came to a conclusion.
“You know, Ilmo, I think they have been good this year.”
A look of relief washed over the children’s faces.
Ilmo raised his glass and the others followed (the children with their glasses of milk and the brothers with their glӧgi).
“I think that there will be blessings for all of the Koskelas this Christmas,” Ilmo preached, “Kippis!”
A chorus of “Kippis!” rang around the table as the family drank and dished up their Christmas meal together. Conversation flowed as they ate leisurely. The kids were eager to tell their uncle about the snow fort they had made outside and Ilmo regaled them with stories from his and his brother’s youth. They ate until they were stuffed, and then more as Jaakko pulled out gingerbread cookies from the warmer.
Glӧgi was exchanged for coffee as they moved into the sitting room. The kids ripped into their presents as the brothers watched on with smiles on their faces.
“Oh, I almost forgot your gift,” Ilmo said quietly to Jaakko as the kids threw wrapping paper at each other. He pulled out a small box wrapped in red and green paper and handed it to his brother.
Jaakko looked curiously at the box before methodically unwrapping it. He opened the small cardboard to find a tangle of cordage. The box was discarded as he untangled the bundle to reveal a necklace made of cordage with a wooden pendant attached. The pendant was hand carved into two overlapping triangles.
Ilmo smiled shyly as he pulled a matching necklace out from under his shirt. “I thought we could match. You know, just a little reminder of why we’re doing all of this,” he rambled. They looked at the kids, oblivious to what was going on with the adults as they pelted each other with wrapping paper. Ilmo was startled by his brother pulling him in for a hug.
The two separated and leaned back into the couch as Jaakko put on his necklace and tucked it under his t-shirt.
“Thank you, Ilmo. For everything this year,” he said. “I don’t know what we’d do without you.”
Ilmo shook his head and put a hand on his shoulder. “It goes both ways, brother. It goes both ways .”
“You started a fire in the sauna before dinner, right?”
"Perkele."

Random Koskela HCs
Headcanons partially based on what I've seen in the game so far, which includes some of the manuscript pages & the commercials (*Some spoilers ahead thus*)
Ilmo is the younger twin with an age difference of 3 solid minutes
Ilmo's entrepreneur & creative spirit is balanced out by Jaakko's no-nonsense attitude.
However, I like to think that Jaakko has had his share of wacky, wild ideas but happily gives Ilmo the credit for them since most residents already view Jaakko as the less quirky brother.
It was actually Jaakko who came up with the floats they can't show on television.
The Koskelas are inseparable from each other and also from their baseball cap and beanie.
They probably lived in Watery their whole life.
Ilmo looks up to his brother, even though he doesn't always say this out loud.
The brothers have a bunch of tapes with bloopers from their commercials that they watch when drinking beers together after a long day of work.
Every now and then, when the weather's good, they like to race each other on their motorcycles. It got them in trouble more than once with the deputies, but fuck the government and police!
They also like to make long tours on their bikes, taking in the views of the landscape.
Extended Family
Jaakko met his wife who was a tourist visiting Bright Falls. They had kids but in the end it didn't work out with them because his wife was a city woman, plus Jaakko's involvement with so many Koskela businesses left him with little to no time for her.
Still, he has an okay bond with his ex and a good relationship with his kids. They mainly keep contact through e-mail and occasional phone calls. During some holidays, the kids visit Jaakko in Watery.
When the kids were young, Jaakko's built them some toys and mini attractions (like a mini moose spring rider)
Ilmo tried his best to be The Cool Uncle but didn't always succeed where he wanted to. Being a smalltown resident, he was often out of touch with the big city customs and cultures.
Other random stuff
Although the local government isn't always too happy about so many things being owned by the Koskelas, it gives the town their fair share of income and it helps locals get jobs and keep a community feel.
Ilmo took evening classes to become an entrepreneur
He had to grow into his more extroverted persona.
Ilmo hates it when tourists pronounce or write his name wrong. No his name is not Elmo and he doesn't know who that furry red thing is. (There have been instances where Jaakko told naive tourists that 'Elmo' is the correct English version they could use instead)
Ilmo once considered doing tour guides on his motorcycle but Jaakko talked him out of it.
Angsty
Ilmo sometimes feels he has to overcompensate in his achievements. Since he looks up to Jaakko, who is his business partner and has a family, Ilmo fears he will fall behind.
Jaakko wishes his kids would stay in Watery, but knowing how shady the place is, he is glad they live far away from their hometown.
Jaakko was initially afraid to become a dad, but Ilmo hyped him up and supported him through the process.
No matter how many Taken they've killed, it hurts each time. Especially if they've known the person who got transformed.
Jaakko was the first one to kill a Taken, which he did after Ilmo initially hesitated which almost got him heavily injured.
Ilmo isn't superstitious, but there always remained a lingering fear that one day he would turn out like the historical figure Illmari. After the events of AW2, he blames himself heavily for Jaakko's death.
Ilmo has survivor's guilt.
After Jaakko's death, Ilmo can't immediately grieve, because there is still an evil to defeat, plus he still has all his responsibilities for the multiple businesses he runs. But keeping up a facade isn't easy.
Ilmo doesn't know what to tell Jaako's kids. How is he supposed to explain what happened to their father? The only "consolation" is that Jaakko's death was quick, he didn't have to bleed out or anything. Still, it was super messed up and Ilmo has nightmares.

Will it ever be alright?
Surprise: an emotional/hurt Ilmo x Cult Member Reader drabble tonight
(I cut n cut to make it as short as possible lol)
You meet Ilmo Koskela at the Workshop after he’d given you an emergency call. Surprisingly, he’s not wearing his regular outfit anymore. The Ahma cap has been replaced by a non-brand one. The iconic jacket gone too. He’s wearing a plaid shirt and regular jeans. Initially, his eyes seem to be glued to the screen of the computer. But upon closer inspection, he’s just staring ahead. His eyes, bloodshot and tired. He must’ve cried before you arrived.
“Ilmo?” you quietly ask.
The man blinks a few times before meeting your eyes. You’ve never seen the Cult leader this distraught and sad.
“I-, I’ve heard the news,” you mutter. Jaako had been killed in action. Ilmo averts his gaze, slowly nodding. He clenches his fist and bites down on his knuckles. “Jaakko… He…” Ilmo doesn’t get further than that. Tears stream down his face. Mournful sobs roll out of him as his shoulders uncontrollably shake. A lump forms in your throat at seeing him so devastated. Wanting to be the stronger one now, you put a reassuring hand on Ilmo’s shoulder. “I lost everything,” he wails. He buries his face in his hands. He curses in Finnish. Carefully, you bend down until you’re face to face and then wrap both arms around him. Ilmo continues crying. He sputters some words that lead nowhere. He’s an utter mess. You wish you could do more. “I’m… I’m here for you,” you whisper.
Ilmo detaches his hands from his face and instead grabs your shoulders. “Shit… You normally don’t see me like this, do you, huh?” He chokes out a weak laugh. His eyes red and swollen, snotty nose and all. You wish you could turn back time. But both of you know there’s nothing you can do.
“It’s okay. Let it all out.” His grasp around your shoulders tightens, putting his entire weight into it. He mirrors your embrace, easily enveloping you. You don’t mind the pressure. If that’s what he needs right now, you’re happy to provide. It’s the least you can do. He rests his head against your chest.
“My brother… Gone, in the blink of an eye,” Ilmo weeps. One hand slowly moves to the back of his head. Carefully, you comb through his short hair as a way to soothe him. Ilmo cries and wails, lamenting and blaming himself. You let him vent, caressing his back and tightening your embrace. You’re not sure how long the two of you’ve been hugging, but at one point the sobbing stops. The words exhausted.
“I’m so tired,” Ilmo whispers.
“Shall I bring you home? I got my car parked outside.”
“If you don’t mind,” Ilmo detaches himself from you and begins wiping away his tears with the sleeves of his shirt.
You throw him a soft smile. “No problem at all.”

Shuffle your favorite playlist and post the first five songs that come up. Then copy/paste this ask to your favorite mutuals. ♥
<33 Thank you for the ask!!
Surprise (not), the Koskela playlist from my Spotify 😏
TLDR, the 5 songs are:
Heroes and Villains by PoTF
The Enemy by Andrew Belle
Achilles by GARETH FERNANDEZ
Crosses by José González
Don't Let Me Go by RAIGN
Now for a more detailed explanation on why all these songs are in my Koskela (and Huotari) list and what prominent lyrics/vibes make me think of them.
1. Heroes and Villains by Poets of the Fall
"We're heroes and villains by chance Heroes and villains by choice"
I think that sums up their role as Cult leaders. Villains to some, heroes to others even if many may not know/understand it. They chose to villainize themselves to keep their home safe.
2. The Enemy by Andrew Belle
This song was recommended after I added 'Pieces' by the same artist in this list.
"Don't try to follow me I would Hold you down if I could Make you the enemy I would Let you down"
idk, this part gives me Jaako & Ilmo vibes. Their relationship to each other, how they can be each other's downfall if not balanced out. (I think echo! Ilmo is an interesting case as what could become of Ilmo if he lost Jaakko much earlier)
"I hold you down I hold you down I hold you"
Then there's this part in the song. And what's interesting to me here, is that I can hear 'I hold you' as different things too. Either 'I hurt you' or 'I haunt you'. Which sums up the last scene of the brothers together. Getting Jaakko involved, made him end up dead (I know this is a really short-sighted observation, but I bet Ilmo feels super guilty about the Cult thing.) And 'I haunt you' is Ilmo post-Jaakko's death being haunted by his shadow and memories.
3. Achilles by GARETH FERNDANDEZ
"I want something I can touch Something I can feel I learnt that my pride is my Achilles heel And when my time is up You know my love was real"
This one's an Ilmo song to me now (used to only have it in my regular playlists lol) Again, set post-Jaakko's death where he's left with survivor's guilt and realizes that all his pride and prideful endeavors mean nothing when the most important person in his world is gone. Only after Jaakko's death, does he realize how much he loved him and how inseparable they were.
"Set me free angel from my nightmare I woke up in this hell too many times Maybe we were never meant to make it I take these words and set 'em on fire"
This line of "too many times" in particular also stood out to me becos it could imply the spiral and being aware of the spiral (self-promo right here: loop/spiral awareness is smth I've written some short drabbles/oneshots for in the past becos it's such intriguing concept)
4. Crosses by José González
"The streets outside your window over-flooded People staring. They know you've been broken Repeatedly reminded by the looks on their faces Ignore them tonight and you'll be alright We'll cast some light and you'll be alright"
Recommended to me by @zephyrone01 This is a Huotari brothers song. POV of Jaakoppi to Ilmari. This matches up with our "Ilmari was possessed by the DP and people in town got suspicious of him" idea.
5. Don't Let Me Go by RAIGN
"Carry me close like the tear drops in your eyes All I can give you is memories Carry them with you and I'll never leave
Don't let me go Hold me in your beating heart"
Another song recommended by Zephyrone01 hehe. It's a powerful song to me 👀 The Angst!!! This specific part would be a Jaakko POV "I won't let go Forever is not enough"
And this would be Ilmo's POV. Anyways, many songs in this playlist are about memories, echoes, darkness & light and moving on and not wanting to live without the other 💔
#i listen to this list daily and get hit in the feels every single time#anon ask#ask#my posts#my ramblings#and it's a long rambling too#koskela brothers#huotari brothers#jaakko koskela#ilmo koskela#jaakoppi huotari#ilmari huotari#personal

Yeah, Jaako's animations in that second conversation do seem like he's nervous, the animations in general are amazing, Ilmo is very expressive just in that first conversation and it's just an in-game scene! I do like to think Ilmo just didn't want to outright lie to Saga so he tried to distract her instead, he seems pretty fond of her, even if that is partly because of the story's influence. He's very kind to her in all their interactions except when he's in the cells and that's understandable. There's even a manuscript where they mention attacking the lodge specifically while Saga's not there so he'd be safe and not involved. Hoping we get more interactions in the DLCs!
omg yes plz more Koskela content in the DLC 😩 I'm like a starving man.
I noticed Ilmo's kindness toward her. Even in the altered story, you can find that pun book he gifted her :')
On the topic of the animations, I'm kind of baffled about the facial expressions the characters have. Ilmo is indeed very expressive, but you can see the subtle animated details in Jaakko and other NPCs as well. What a great game :')
Although, in typical videogame manner, it's also funny to see Ilmo go from :D to his idle :| animation. But it adds to the charm I think

I'm not down bad for them personally because they remind me of my brothers, but that is one of the reasons I love them so much. My brother passed away a bit ago, and he acted so much like Ilmo that when I was playing the game, it almost felt like he was there again. It helps that Jaako acts like my remaining younger brother, so their dynamic is so, so familiar. It nearly made me cry a few times, especially near the end. Wrong brother, ofc, but it still hurt so much. I'm thankful they have fans, no matter for horny posting or whatever, cuz I'm just glad to see people appreciate them. They deserve every bit of it. So thank you for the valuable contribution to this fandom.
Thnx for ur message 🙏🏽
It always makes me happy if others like the Koskelas too 😭💙💙 My condolences for your loss. Hopefully playing the game then, was somewhat comforting for you then! (Except then the final scenes becos 💔💔)
I’m happy to do my part in spreading the love for them :D ❤️
