Walton Morrigan — Thoughts on Harlan Westerly
Character Featured: Walton Morrigan
Mentioned: Harlan Westerly, Trinity Valentin
Pairing: Harlan Westerly x Trinity Valentin (mentioned)
Warning(s): Does Trinity count /j, Walton and Harlan being in the same room, implied murder(?), that weird stench in Walton's room no one wants to discuss, I'm so sorry if Harlan's ooc 😭, potentially ooc

“Trinity finds interest in that man, I'm not sure why. Harlan and I have a shared interest in biology, and I wonder what it would be like if I could run experiments with him…. Or rather, on him. Oh, don't tell him I said that, however. Trinity will throttle me if they find out.”
— Walton Morrigan

Non-verbal Thoughts
╚══ஓ๑†๑ஓ══╝
「 General Thoughts 」
˚₊· ͟͟͞➳❥ Walton is a little bit intrigued by Harlan! Perhaps too intrigued.
➜ At first glance, both of them have their mad scientist get-up and honestly, it isn't surprising to assume they're both similar in personality.
➜ In actuality, they're pretty different! Harlan isn't one to emote all that much, if at all, whereas Walton does emote — he just makes it unsettling for everyone else when he does.
➜ Y'know that weird green energy drink Harlan always drinks? Walton wants to try it. But he doesn't want to put in the effort to ask Harlan himself, so he just smuggles one from the fridge full of them in Trinity's room /j
➜ He's amused around Harlan. He's like an English literature professor around him, always overanalyzing everything Harlan has to say! /j
➜ ….. He's confused, to say the least. Are Harlan and Trinity dating, or…? Nah. He's probably hallucinating. (He's not.)
➜ I don't think they'd talk to each other all that much 😭 Harlan's lack of emoting and Walton's general disinterest in actual conversation are the leading contributions to that, unfortunately.
➜ A little birdie informed Walton that Harlan's parents were scientists! He wonders if they're being genuine when they say they aspire to be like them, one day….
➜ One of the few similarities the two share is the fact that they only seem to find joy in things they're already interested in. Harlan rambles about his interests, whereas Walton asks cryptid questions to just about anyone unwilling to listen.
➜ Sleep doesn't exist for these two /j
↳ Trinity often has to tell Harlan to get some sleep. And even then, it feels like he barely even heard them.
➜ Harlan seemingly wonders a great many things about Walton. He was an anomaly in Terrovania, always wearing an uncannily polite smile that never looked quite right. And a stench emitting from his room that urged their dorm head to never try entering.
➜ They're both against plagiarists! Good for them!
༝ㅤ・ㅤ˚ㅤ。ㅤ.ㅤ⋆ㅤ「❃」
「 Interactions 」
❐ They're in the same dorm. They would've met whether they liked it or not.
➜ From their first meeting, Walton felt the unrelenting urge to learn more about Harlan, to learn everything about him. About his hypocrisy to blatant lies, his obsession with ‘restarting’, all about him.
↳ In his own way, he comes off as more obsessed than Trinity.
➜ Harlan…. Honestly, no one can really tell what Harlan thinks of Walton. Not even Walton himself.
➜ Walton doesn't understand Harlan's ‘jokes’. Then again, who does?
↳ Trinity /j /j
➜ Seemingly nothing can faze Harlan. Not even the stench coming from Walton's room, or Walton himself. Good for him.
➜ ….. So who's gonna tell Walt that Harlan's technically related to Vil-
↳ No one. The answer is no one.
➜ The more Walton learned about Harlan, the more interested he became in him. The moment he found out about Harlan's unique magic, he was ready to bring his experiments into play.
↳ No experiments were made.
➜ How Harlan is capable of tolerating Samuel is beyond Walton's understanding. Seriously, sir, what's so tolerable about them-?
➜ You know how Harlan's uncharacteristically clingy to people he's legitimately interested in? Yeah, he does that to Trinity. It has nothing to do with Walton, it's just something the latter happened to notice.
↳ He's honestly surprised Trinity's managed to keep Harlan clinging to her for so long.
➜ That abomination of an energy drink intrigues him to no end, and Walton will probably be found drinking it from time to time. Not because Harlan gave him one, though.
↳ He smuggled some from Trinity's fridge /j /j

Here's the general gist of our gothlit universe so far. (Which is inspired by the overall idea of the league of extraordinary gentlemen but not a re-write. As we've only seen the movie and have no plans on reading the comics)
Essentially it's a universe set in the Victorian era. Humans and other beings (Anything from changelings to spirits) share the earth. Children are warned to never leave the cities, or too look too far into alleyways. Those born in the countryside are to never go into the woods.
Most humans just do their best to never encounter one of the Others. Yet sometimes they're unavoidable or their gifts and deals are sought.
Our main characters are all in various ways indebted and trapped by the crown. And they all seem to have something, different about them.
There's Mina Harker (She/her), forcefully turned to a vampire after the events of Dracula, and who happens to be the teams leader. While recovering from her recent turning and the events that had conspired. Mina ended up going to the crown for help researching a way to permanently cure vampirism. In exchange she'd lead the group.
Adam (they/them), a mess of human corpses brought back to life. Also a mix of a researcher and fighter for the team. And their creator, Victor Frankenstein (He/they). The only fully human member of the team and is the teams medic for any flesh wounds. After their near death experience in the artic they had both found a way to safety on Robert Walton's ship. Creature, having heard of the Others before but being too focused on their revenge. Decided to go searching. Hoping to find acceptance among them. Victor, on the other hand made the decision to stay with Walter until the various aliments he had been suffering from finally did them in. Until the crown ended up hunting down them both. Creature for their strength, Victor for his skills.
J. Griffin, the invisible man (he/him). Another fighter on the team but also works intell. Using his ability to sneak into any important events to relay them to everyone else. After just barely managing to escape the crowd that had trampled him, beating most of his serum out of his blood he had managed to convince one Dr. Kemp that he had simply gone insane due to a malfunction in his serum. Kemp, not believing him but still remembering their times together allowed him to rest up and tended to his wounds. And during that time Griffin manged to re-create his blood bleech. When the crown came knocking on the door requesting Griffin's help, or he would be excuted.
The headless horseman(any pronouns). After haunting a small town for decades, forgetting entirely their own identity. It ended up being captured by bounty hunters who worked for the crown. Being more sentient than other spirits the crown decided to use her as a unkillable solider. Riding their steed into any battle in exchange of a promise that his past would be found. Allowing her to rest. Eventually she was assigned to the team.
And thats all for now! We might add more characters to the main team as time goes on but that's the current lineup.
Also! Some general information about us and this blog.
I'm Everest, (he/she/it) my tag is -🪶) but you should also expect to see Henry (they/he)-🧪)
Other alters might interact on here but I'm not entirely sure so I'm leaving it up to them to introduce themselves. Our system pronouns are he/they/it.
This blog will be mainly about our own gothlit universe but we'll also reblong content onto it!

// @sxxblime

Frankenstein: A New Musical – The Cursed Edition a.k.a. The Workshop Version
youtube
Earlier this week I have started a lyrics chain of "Birth to my Creation" from the workshop (or demo, or 2002 version) of Frankenstein: a new musical. Since nobody continued, I assume you don’t know where those strange lyrics come from (or you just missed it, or you don’t have time for silly things, or you just don’t care, and it’s fine! take this as a joke, please).
Because it was also a few months since I watched this musical for the last time, I decided to watch it now again.
Let me say, it was a ride.
I have written some notes and thoughts while watching it and it’s what this post is dedicated to:
-The musical starts with Amen. That means we are ending with Amen reprise. I kinda like this.
-Wait, that means NO WALTON?! Why...
-Victor is a horrible person. He buys the convict’s body before he is even hanged!
-Elizabeth doubts from the beginning that Victor will write them letters. Or care about them. They should‘ve left this detail here, it would add a bittersweet aspect to Way Home.
-So there’s no Victor’s mom? What has happened to her here?
-Victor is less passive in this early version, I like this because it seems like he too is a reason for his tragedy, he isn’t a victim of cirumstances and the Creature like in the Off-Broadway production.
-THEY MADE VICTOR A DOCTOR, help.
-HENRY IS A DOCTOR TOO, wut?
-Victor is late to his party, who are you? A musical Henry Jekyll?
-“It does turn to undermine the lady’s confidence when she learns she can not compete with the cadavers.” Oof.
-Henry is concerned about Victor since the beginning, Victor stop!
-Henry knows since the beginning that Victor is doing something wrong and/or illegal.
-This moment is weird if you take it out of context, heh:
Tumblr media
(why does he have to deliver that line this way HBLDSAOREWBN)
-THE CURSED LYRICS OF “BIRTH TO MY CREATION”, and the words are off-beat, help.
-“The purest plasma coursing freely trough arteries and veins, the perfect tissue...” no.
-“At Ingolstadt I’ll have the means!” Where is my Mecha of science? And beans?
-The album: (softly) Can you hear me? Live! Damn you. The demo: (slaps him) Can you hear me?! Live (punch)! Damn you!!!
-Victor has living, conscious Creature tied up to a wall? What?!
-Victor goes straight home and locks himself up in his room in ~Henry Jekyll~ style. And doesn’t open door to his close friend. Can this get more simmilar to J&H musical?
-Elizabeth has a solo called "Once Upon a Time". Jekyll & Hyde musical had also a sad solo of a scientist’s future wife called "Once Upon a Dream". Cast Christianne Noll here and we got... oh, wait a minute.
-During “A Happier Day”, is it Vic’s and Eliza’s wedding? And while Elizabeth is preparing for her wedding, Victor is making a Bride? What is a time consistency or accuracy in this?
-“I, a man will now give birth...” NO! I swear, those lyrics are getting weirder each song (unless Victor is trans, then your headcanons were right all along!).
-“I shall help you by making you stop!“ Good point Henry, and Victor, stop holding Henry like a savage dog, no!
-Creature kills Elizabeth before her wedding and then Eliza has an "I’m dying but heartbreaking song is more important" moment.
-“Your Father’s Eyes” is nice! And that “Damn a man who does not give...” motif makes sense now in Amen reprise.
-I want the end of Amen reprise to be left in the play. “Behold a sorrow born of dreams... at least your playing God at last will end... Amen.” It makes such a chilling and symbolic ending. A convict’s life has ended with an Amen, now the Creature’s last words are the same.
So, was it good? Yes, it had some interesting moments I wish were kept in Broadway version but the play itself isn’t better than what we are used to. Was it worth it? I mean, yea, any "Frankenstein: A New Musical" content is a good content.
This day was amazing, thank you for your nice words everybody, I’m glad and happy people like my little drawings I do. Everyone I’ve somehow interacted with in this fandom was amazing and lovely. This fandom is great, thank you :D!
Alright. See you later, thanks for stopping by to read this post and have a nice day :)

Social media negatively effect mental health
our reliance on social media can have a detrimental effect on mental health. Social media can caused self-comparison and lower self esteem of a person. As we can see celebrities posting their beautiful/handsome pictures on Facebook and Instagram, we will start comparing ourselves with them and feel we are not perfect. For example, when Kylie Jenner posted herself with a sports car on Instagram, we  might feel why we are not rich and beautiful like her. Moreover, using too much social media, especially Facebook may lead to “Facebook depression”. According to report by the American Academy of Pediatrics explains the term of Facebook depression that “depression that develops when teens and preteens spend time on social media sites and then begin to exhibit classic symptoms of depression due to the intensity of the online world”  (As cited in Gelani, 2018). As people can share their status, posting pictures of others having a good time, some teenagers might feel jealous and anxious. However, the other main trigger to this psychological issue is FOMO or fear of missing out. This term commonly defines the anxious feeling when other people might enjoy a great time without you (Ali & McAlani, 2020). FOMO has 4 sub-fears, there are fears of not being popular, fear of being missing from  valuable information, fear of being excluded from social groups and fear of inciting negative reactions (Ali & McAlani, 2020). Therefore, the fear of missing out is directly detrimental to the mental health of teenagers. Moreover, heavy social media use may cause poor sleep. From the study of high social media users (five hours or more per day) approximately 70% are more likely to sleep after midnight ( Heavy social, 2019).  This is because when you go to bed, the brain will relax and prepare to sleep, but by using social media it will stimulate the brain resulting body to remain active (Walton, 2019).  Due to insufficient amounts of sleep can affect mental health, heart functioning and make the body inactive. In addition, Teenagers who usually spend most of their time on social media might not have time to perform outdoor activities. Those who exercise everyday, the body will release endorphins which allow the brain to stay positivist and reduce stress. Therefore, decreasing outdoor activities can reduce the amount of endorphin secretion which might cause depression (Prajapati, 2020)

Marginalized Groups: Trans Women (of Color)
Trans women are often left out of conversations regarding the effects of media representation and real-world manifestations of them. A two-part study published in 2017 included, in the first study, a total sample of 274 cisgender men and women participants who each watched two of six film and television clips that depicted trans women in various lights (Kurtz-Costes & Solomon). Two positive, negative, and control (neutral) clips constituted the six TV/film clips, with the two positive clips coming from 2003 episode "Where the Boys Are" of Gray's Anatomy and the other from 2015 episode "Death Doesn't Let You Say Goodbye" of Sense8. The two negative clips came from a 2012 episode "Strip Maul" of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and 2012 episode "Orca Shrugged" of Sons of Anarchy (pictured below). Finally, the two control clips came from a 2009 episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and a 2003 episode of Grey's Anatomy.
Tumblr media
Image: (Stahler 2014)
After watching the clips, the participants were asked a series of questions and responded with their agreement "on a 7-point scale ranging from 'not at all' to 'very much so.'" The researchers found a statistical correlation between participants watching clips that portrayed trans women in positive lights and having more empathetic/positive attitudes towards them by cisgender people. Research such as this is important because it provides a facts-based approach to a topic that is said to cause social tension and controversy, which also were points considered in the study.
As mentioned in the article, the trans community does not constitute enough of the general population in a way that increases the likelihood of daily interactions with cisgender people. Therefore, the depictions of trans people on TV shows and in movies serve as the primary glimpses into the ideals and personalities of trans people, which can be, and often is, harmful. Typical depictions include psychotic and violent trans women and sex workers that are often victims of violent sex-related crimes and/or murder, such as in the TV show Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, with the episode "Fallacy" highlighted in the article. These are the only images of trans women that the general public sees, and considering how cisgender women are already treated when victims of physical or sexual assault, there are no surprises when learning of even less sympathy about physical and sexual violence towards trans women. The personal effects of violence against women, especially in trans women, include self blame, depression, and suicidal thoughts, which proves the point that there exists a lot of room in media for change that translates into a more inclusive and safe environment for all women (Hawkey et al. 2021).

Hello & Welcome to Amazon Sharks!
Tumblr media
Would you like to:
Start your own business…
Quit your job…
Pay off debt…
Take holidays whenever you want…
Spend more time on things you LOVE doing…
Have less stress & more money…
Does this all sound like a late-night commercial for a shady multi-level marketing program?
It sure does!
Tumblr media
I did this on purpose because—as cliche as this all sounds—it is truly achievable by creating a successful Amazon operation that sells your own private-label products on the world’s fastest- growing eCommerce platform!
If you’ve ever ordered anything from Amazon, you’ll have noticed that they actually only sell a small portion of the millions of products available on their website. Most of the products you see on Amazon are sold by third-party sellers—just ordinary people like you and me! Amazon takes care of the warehousing, order processing, shipping, and even customer support, meaning your only job is to source products and promote your listings!
In the US, this business model has become extremely popular. Thousands of people have taken advantage of this opportunity, and there are sellers who make seven and eight figures in sales on Amazon alone. Some have even become multi-millionaires along the way! It has never been a better time to get into this game by taking advantage of Amazon’s fastest-growing marketplace—Amazon UK!

Edit: I'm so sorry this took so long to post 💀
Oc thoughts: Walton Morrigan on Maxwell Murray and Samuel

Mentioned: Maxwell Murray, Samuel
Warning(s): Walton /j, Samuel being a little shit, Trinity™, implied murder(?), Walton's room, potentially ooc

“Hmm….. My dorm leader intrigues me. I don't know much about Maxwell, but I wish to know more… It's funny, really. Uncharacteristically tall, with a unique magic that makes him almost invisible… He'd make a wonderful test subject.”
“Samuel. That troublesome little- Ugh…. They exasperate me, to no end. His childishness and annoying voice make my ears bleed, and sometimes, in the dead of night, I wonder what would happen if I…. Oh, hah. You didn't hear that.”
— Walton Morrigan
╔══ஓ๑†๑ஓ══╗
Non-verbal Thoughts
╚══ஓ๑†๑ஓ══╝
「 General Thoughts 」
˚₊· ͟͟͞➳❥ They don't talk to Walton. Or rather, Walton doesn't talk to them as much as he should.
➜ Walton's always busy with his machinery and computer work, and in general, pretty unapproachable. Not because no one wants to talk to him, but because Walton doesn't allow anyone closer to him. Simply put: He keeps everyone at arm's length.
➜ And Maxwell and Samuel aren't exceptions. Not in the slightest. Walton only goes to them when it concerns any conditions he needs to meet regarding his machinery, but that's about it.
➜ They've interacted with him, of course, but it's just unusually rare. Walton doesn't make it any better, his eerie — almost uncanny — sort of personality.
➜ Perhaps there's another reason Max doesn't approach Walton. The latter claims he works at a hospital on the side, after all…
➜ Walton's one of the few people who immediately notice Max is around. Quietness doesn't stop him from being as analytical as he is.
➜ Samuel's shenanigans frustrate him to no end. He has this almost murderous look in his eyes every time he talks to them. He gets progressively angrier when Samuel starts messing with him through his ‘childish’ pranks.
➜ Trinity seems to be the only one who can properly restrain Walton from throttling Samuel, then and there, at any given moment. Despite that, Walton's significantly taller than they were, and has gotten close to see the light leave Samuel's eyes…. Allegedly.
➜ When they do dorm room check-ins, Walton doesn't allow Max to check up on him in his room. And frankly, Max prefers it that way.
↳ There's just this…. Stench, to Walton's room. Max didn't wanna know what was the cause of it, and just left Walton's room be.
➜ Walton begrudgingly accepts the candy Samuel offers, even if — at times — there's probably some sort of concoction to them.
↳ If it can get Samuel away from him, then so be it.
༝ㅤ・ㅤ˚ㅤ。ㅤ.ㅤ⋆ㅤ「❃」
「 Interactions 」
❐ Well- Walton was in Terrovania since before Max became the dorm head. It was no surprise that he met Max, and later met Samuel.
➜ Walton wants to do experiments on Maxwell. Weird, I know, but he really isn't trying to beat the ‘mad scientist/potential serial killer’ allegations. (Maybe the latter, but not so much for the former.)
➜ He recommends movies to Max from time to time. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Oddly enough, Walton would usually recommend children's movies.
➜ He legitimately believed Samuel was like…. 12, at most. Then again, he didn't care how old he was, Samuel was a continuous nuisance to him.
➜ Walton ‘Samuel-proofed’ the ceilings in Terrovania so he couldn't crawl on them anymore. But, alas, it was only a temporary little addition.
➜ They really can't point their finger at it, but…. There was just something off about Walton. He talks, acts, and thinks like a normal overly analytical genius would. But, something about him just… Doesn't feel right.
➜ Walton brings lollipops everywhere he goes, just to shove them in Samuel's mouth to get him to shut up.
➜ ‘Conversations’ between Max and Walton barely feel like conversations. Because of how quiet the two are, most would just assume they were having an unusually tense staring contest.
➜ Learning about Max's unnatural strength, only made Walton want to run experiments on him even more. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, he can't do that as long as Max is still Terrovania’s dorm head.
➜ Both Max and Samuel can agree that they don't want to go into Walton's room at all. The stench emitting from it was enough of a reason, but it seemed there were more reasons than they let on…

Connecting to Homophily in Social Media
Tumblr media
What Makes You Feel Connected?
Social interactions and a sense of belonging are central to our well-being.  What makes you feel connected and gives you a sense of belonging? There are many thoughts on what makes a person feel connected.  Social Media makes it possible to stay connected with friends, family, co-workers and others.  It’s a forum that enables you to engage in conversations with those you enjoy interacting with on a regular basis.  It provides the ability participate in and share their lives even if you do not reside in the same geographical area.  The connection is broader than just family, friends and co-workers.  It makes interactions with absolute strangers possible that have the same likes, beliefs, social activity interests, health related issues, etc.  Social media provides that sense of belonging and support that we all crave.  Psychology Today states “A sense of belonging is a human need, just like the need for food and shelter” (Hall, 2014).
Homophily and Social Media
What is Homophily?  Homophily refers to “love of the same”. Homophily speaks to the fact that connections between people with the same interests, beliefs, culture, age, etc. happen at a much higher rate than those of people with dissimilar interests (McPherson, Smith-Lovin & Cook, 2006).  The old adage that birds of a feather flock together is so true.  There are many benefits to homophily in social media.  However, one is very personal to me.  My son was recently diagnosed with a very rare form of Leukemia.  Social media provided him with connections to virtual communities of individuals who were diagnosed with the same form of Leukemia. This provided him the connections with other individuals who were just like him experiencing Leukemia for the first time.  Unlike his family and friends, these individuals were or had been experiencing the same thing.  They could relate to him and him to then.  The power of social media and the benefits of connecting people in situations like this is more powerful than one may believe.  This gave him the ability to accept his diagnosis and move forward. In Psychology Today, they speak to an intervention developed by Dr. Gregory Walton known as “Attributional Retraining” (Hall, 2014).  The definition as stated in the article is “people shifting from blaming themselves for painful experiences, such as a “I’m flawed” or “It’s just me”, to seeing that they weren’t alone and that other people had experienced the same situations” (Hall, 2014).  This is exactly what the power of community and belonging through interactions on social media did for my son.
Power of Platform Algorithms and Homophily
Algorithms used by various platforms are focused on providing the individual user with the information that is most relevant to them. Facebook is a widely used platform that uses algorithms to ensure their users receive the content that is most important to them (Agrawal, 2016).  Algorithms key in on the individuals use history to determine the types of information. Referring back to my son’s recent diagnosis, I spent a lot of time searching for information on his rare type of Leukemia and treatment options.  Immediately I began receiving posts specifically providing information on Leukemia, treatment options, support sites, etc.  I found this very useful and continue participating in many virtual communities for families with members diagnosed with Leukemia.  On another note, I love to travel and have been introduced to many special offers for amazing trips at reduced fares.  I like seeing information that is specific to my likes and interests.  Embrace it, there are many benefits!

Here the business transaction will play between two or more customers. A good example of C2C is classified advertisements where the customer sells products or services to other customers online.
B2B( Business to Business):
It is the first ecommerce business type where the ecommerce transactions happen between two businesses that are too online.
In simple, one company will sell products or services to other companies. (i.e.,) wholesale distributors will sell products or services to retailers. It will sound like B2C, but B2B is different from the B2C process.
In the B2B business, the order and purchase process are to be clear. One company has to purchase every small thing from another company to complete its full business set up. Normally this field includes the selling of goods that are not used by customers. For instance, steel, company software, company’s hardware accessories, etc.,
Some interesting stats about the B2B business:
50% of B2B businesses are done through mobile phones and here in 2020, it will increase up to 70%.
46% of B2B buyers are millennial's.
In 2020, B2B ecommerce sales are expected to grow more than B2C ecommerce sales.

Trump-Barr divide worsens as the president bucks a request to stop tweeting, and the Justice Dept. declines to charge his political foe(We've seen this movie before!!)
By Matt Zapotosky, Josh Dawsey, Devlin Barrett and Spencer S. Hsu | Published February 14 at 7:17 PM EST | Washington Post | Posted Feb 14, 2020
The Justice Department on Friday revealed it would not charge former acting FBI director Andrew McCabe, a longtime target of President Trump’s wrath, exacerbating the angry divide between Trump, his attorney general and federal law enforcement officials.
The development came just a day after Attorney General William P. Barr made a televised entreaty to Trump to stop tweeting about criminal cases — and just hours after Trump defied that request.
While three White House officials said Barr, one of Trump’s most loyal and effective Cabinet secretaries, was in no immediate danger of being fired, the attorney general’s relationship with the president is facing its gravest threat yet. Inside and outside the Justice Department, officials watched warily — some questioning whether Barr was truly at odds with Trump, others heartened by what seemed to be Barr defending the institution’s historical independence and all wondering what comes next.
The eventful day began — as many in Washington do now — with a defiant Trump reacting on Twitter to something he saw on television. The president quoted from Barr’s interview Thursday with ABC News, during which the attorney general asserted that Trump had never asked him to do anything related to a criminal case.
“This doesn’t mean that I do not have, as President, the legal right to do so, I do, but I have so far chosen not to!” Trump added in his own voice.
A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment on Trump’s tweet.
Hours later, the department made a move that might be seen as exerting its independence, revealing that it would not charge McCabe with lying to investigators about a media disclosure years ago.
Officials familiar with the matter, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss Trump’s interactions, said the president was not told about the McCabe decision in advance and was upset. White House lawyers, including White House counsel Pat Cipollone, moved to calm the president, these people said. One official said Trump “believes very strongly that action should be taken.”
Trump, who is spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago Club in South Florida, did not address Barr’s TV interview or the McCabe case in a speech before departing the White House. He and Barr spoke Friday afternoon, but the substance of their discussion was not immediately clear, a person familiar with the matter said. White House aides are counseling Trump not to discuss McCabe at all, according to those familiar with the matter.
Democratic lawmakers and legal analysts, meanwhile, remained wary of what Barr was up to, and another development Friday indicated he was far from a complete break with the president.
According to people familiar with the matter, Barr has tasked outside prosecutors — in the deputy attorney general’s office and from the U.S. attorney’s office in St. Louis — to review the handling of the criminal case against former Trump national security adviser Michael T. Flynn and other sensitive national security and public corruption prosecutions in the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington. Among the other cases are the investigation into Blackwater founder Erik Prince for potentially lying to Congress, along with other matters that have not yet been made public, a person familiar with the matter said.
The prosecutors began their work in recent weeks, coinciding with the transition of office leadership from former U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu to interim U.S. attorney Timothy J. Shea, a former Barr counselor. One Justice Department official said a prosecutor with the St. Louis U.S. attorney’s office is working with Flynn prosecutor Brandon Van Grack, characterizing his work as “assisting” Van Grack in a review of the case.
That has fueled concerns among career prosecutors and others that the department’s political leadership is making a push to exert more control at a key point in sensitive, high-profile cases. Flynn was one of the early people to plead guilty in connection with special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s probe, admitting he lied to the FBI about his contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States, though he has since tried to withdraw his plea and allege misconduct on behalf of prosecutors.
The review was first reported by the New York Times.
Trump has consistently sought to undermine Mueller’s probe and those involved in it — either by asking for investigations of the investigators or, in more extreme cases, that criminal charges be filed against them. That has been particularly true for McCabe and his former boss, James B. Comey.
“Of all of them, it’s Comey and McCabe that seem to really rile him up,” one person close to Trump and Barr said of the president.
Behind the scenes, Trump has raged over the lack of legal action against the pair, including last August — when officials announced Comey would not face charges for his handling of memos he wrote while FBI director — and in January, when The Washington Post reported that a re-examination of corruption allegations related to Hillary Clinton had come up empty, according to people familiar with the discussions.
As a top law enforcement official, McCabe authorized the FBI to begin investigating Trump personally for possible obstruction of justice in connection with the probe into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia to influence the 2016 election.
McCabe became the focus of a grand jury probe over allegations from the Justice Department inspector general that he lied to investigators exploring a media disclosure. Department officials authorized prosecutors to seek an indictment of him last year, and in September a grand jury that had been hearing evidence was summoned back to consider the case after a months-long hiatus.
But the day came and went with no public charges being filed. McCabe’s legal team sought to press the Justice Department for a status update but was told nothing. A spokeswoman for D.C. U.S. attorney’s office, which led the investigation, declined to comment.
McCabe, a CNN contributor, said on the network Friday that the investigation was a “horrific black cloud that’s been hanging over me and my family for almost the last two years,” and that the formal end of it was a “relief” he could not put into words.
“It’s just a very emotional moment for my whole family,” he said.
Trump’s attacks made a prosecution of McCabe especially complicated. According to materials made public Friday in a Freedom of Information Act case related to the investigation, a federal judge in D.C. warned prosecutors in the case that the public was watching and that comments from the White House were detrimental.
“I just think it’s a banana republic when we go down that road and we have those type of statements being made that are conceivably, even if not, influencing the ultimate decision,” Judge Reggie B. Walton said. “I think there are a lot of people on the outside who perceive that there is undue, inappropriate pressure being brought to bear.”
He added later, “I think as a government and as a society we’re going to pay a price at some point for this.”
Barr, too, had for weeks been concerned with Trump’s tweets about criminal cases, and on Thursday he decided to make his feelings known publicly.
“I think it’s time to stop the tweeting about Department of Justice criminal cases,” he told ABC News, adding that such statements “about the department, about people in the department, our men and women here, about cases pending here, and about judges before whom we have cases, make it impossible for me to do my job and to assure the courts and the prosecutors and the department that we’re doing our work with integrity.”
Justice Department staff informed the White House about Barr’s ABC interview after it was recorded, but before it aired, a person familiar with the matter said. They did not provide specifics, the person said. In recent weeks, Barr had told Trump privately more than once that the president’s tweets and public statements were creating difficulties for the Justice Department, but when those private talks seemed not to have the desired effect, the attorney general decided to raise the issue publicly, according to people familiar with the matter.
Barr also said in the interview Thursday that Trump would be within his rights to ask for a criminal investigation in an area that didn’t affect his personal interest — such as in a terrorism case or fraud by a bank. But he said an attorney general would not listen to an order to investigate a political opponent.
“If he were to say go investigate somebody, and you sense it’s because they’re a political opponent, then an attorney general shouldn’t carry that out, wouldn’t carry that out,” Barr said.
The public rebuke of the president by a sitting member of his Cabinet arose from a crisis of confidence at the Justice Department, which had been accused this week of buckling to an angry tweet the president issued after he learned of prosecutors’ initial prison recommendation for his longtime friend Roger Stone.
A federal jury convicted Stone in November on charges of witness tampering and lying to Congress about his efforts to gather damaging information about Clinton, Trump’s 2016 presidential election opponent.
On Tuesday, Trump criticized as unduly harsh the initial sentencing recommendation of seven to nine years made by front-line prosecutors. Shortly thereafter, the Justice Department signaled that it would seek a more lenient sentence for Stone, a move that prompted the four career prosecutors to withdraw from the case — and one to resign from the government.
Barr has said the decision was made before Trump’s tweet on the matter. His assertions, though, have not fully placated legal analysts and Democrats on Capitol Hill concerned that he is not adequately protecting the Justice Department’s independence. Rep. Adam B. Schiff (D-Calif.) asserted Friday on Twitter that Barr had admitted intervening in a case “to cover up for the President.”
“He’s only upset that Trump’s tweets made the political nature of his intervention obvious,” Schiff wrote. “Barr fools no one. He’s a witting accomplice to Trump’s attack on the rule of law.”
Stone is scheduled to be sentenced next Thursday, though on Friday his defense attorneys demanded a new trial. The request came one day after Trump said on Twitter that the forewoman of the jury that convicted him was “seriously biased.”

Roger Stone asks for new trial in sealed motion, one day after Trump accused jury forewoman of bias( Our tax dollars at work! LOCK HIS ASS UP!!!!)
By Spencer S. Hsu and John Wagner | Published February 14 at 5:00 PM EST | Washington Post | Posted Feb 14, 2020
Defense attorneys for Roger Stone demanded a new trial Friday, one day after President Trump suggested that the forewoman in his longtime political confidant’s case had “significant bias.” The legal motion could affect Stone’s Feb. 20 sentencing date on charges of witness tampering and lying to Congress.
The basis for the request was filed under seal Friday, but its existence was disclosed in a court order by U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who gave U.S. prosecutors until Feb. 18 to respond.
“Now it looks like the fore person in the jury, in the Roger Stone case, had significant bias,” Trump wrote on Twitter on Thursday, in a week in which his public comments have set off a crisis of confidence in the Justice Department. “Add that to everything else, and this is not looking good for the ‘Justice’ Department.”
Trump was referring to Tomeka Hart, a former president of the Memphis City Schools Board of Commissioners and unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Congress. Hart has identified herself as the forewoman of the jury in a Facebook post, saying she “can’t keep quiet any longer” in the wake of the Justice Department move to reduce its sentencing recommendation for Stone from the seven to nine years recommended by front-line prosecutors.
The four prosecutors quit the case when the department reduced its recommendation Tuesday, after Trump called the initial request “horrible and very unfair.”
“It pains me to see the DOJ now interfere with the hard work of the prosecutors,” Hart said in the post. “They acted with the utmost intelligence, integrity, and respect for our system of justice.”
The basis of the defense motion is not known. However, Hart’s disclosure led to scrutiny of her past social media commentary about Trump and special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, in which Stone was indicted.
A jury convicted Stone in November on charges of witness tampering and lying to the House Intelligence Committee about his efforts to gather damaging information about Trump’s 2016 presidential election opponent Hillary Clinton.
Although Hart was not named at the trial, the juror’s identity was always known to both Stone’s defense and prosecutors throughout proceedings. She disclosed her background, including a bid for Congress, in public pretrial jury selection.
Stone’s defense and his trial judge had the opportunity to question Hart directly and challenge her eligibility at the time.
Given heavy pretrial publicity, the court required all potential jurors to answer questionnaires to probe potential bias. Potential jurors were asked if they, friends or family ever ran for office. They were also asked if they had formed any opinion about Trump or Clinton, or if their possible connection in the case would make it difficult for them to be fair and impartial.
The questionnaire required prospective jurors to disclose if they have “written or posted anything for public consumption” about Stone or the House or special counsel investigations. It also explicitly asked if they formed or expressed any opinion about Stone, including his guilt or innocence.
It is not known how Hart answered the social media question, or whether she had commented publicly on Stone. Those answers and others could be material if they conflicted with prospective jurors’ pledge under oath to answer truthfully.
But Hart, in jury screening observed by the public, said she had not formed an opinion about Stone and was seated after both sides had a chance to press her.
Asked by the judge if there was anything about Stone’s role with the Trump campaign that affected her “ability to judge him fairly and impartially sitting here right now in this courtroom,” Hart answered, “Absolutely not.”
Asked by Stone attorney Robert C. Buschel if she still had political aspirations, Hart said she remained interested in local education but had no immediate plans to run for office.
Hart also replied “No,” when the judge asked if there were anything about Stone’s Republican affiliation that gave her “any reason to pause or hesitate or think that you couldn’t fairly evaluate the evidence against him.”
The Supreme Court standard for juror qualification is that they need not “be totally ignorant of the facts and issues involved. . . . It is sufficient if the juror can lay aside his impression or opinion and render a verdict based on the evidence presented in court.”

As impeachment trial ended, federal prosecutors took new steps in probe related to Giuliani, according to people familiar with case
By Rosalind S. Helderman and Tom Hamburger | Published February 14 at 6:22 PM EST | Washington Post | Posted February 15, 2020 |
As the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump drew to a close in Washington earlier this month, federal prosecutors in New York contacted witnesses and sought to collect additional documents in an investigation related to Trump’s personal attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani, according to people familiar with their activities.
The recent steps — including an interview with a witness last week — indicate that the probe involving Giuliani and two of his former associates is moving forward, even as the Justice Department has set up a process to evaluate claims Giuliani is making about alleged wrongdoing in Ukraine related to former vice president Joe Biden.
Attorney General William P. Barr said this week that the department had established an “intake process” to accept information about Biden gathered by the president’s personal attorney. Officials confirmed Giuliani’s tips are being routed to the U.S. attorney’s office in Pittsburgh.
At the same time, the U.S. attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York — which Giuliani led in the 1980s — appears to be continuing its wide-ranging investigation of his activities and those of his former associates Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, including their efforts in Ukraine.
Prosecutors from that office recently sought information related to the former U.S. ambassador in Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch, who the three men pushed Trump to oust, according to a person familiar with the request who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation. They have also inquired about two companies with ties to Parnas, who along with Fruman was charged in October with campaign finance violations, according to people with knowledge of the queries.
The parallel developments mean that one part of the Justice Department is scrutinizing Giuliani while another is accepting information from him allegedly concerning a political rival of the president.
The remarkable dynamic comes at a moment of intense scrutiny for Barr, who intervened this week to lower the sentencing recommendation for Trump confidant Roger Stone in the wake of a tweet by the president — and over the objections of career prosecutors.
The unfolding Giuliani case could further test Barr, who told ABC News this week he is “not going to be bullied or influenced by anybody” and urged the president to stop tweeting about Justice Department criminal cases.
On Friday, Trump rejected the idea that he should stay out of such cases, tweeting that he has a “legal right” to weigh in on criminal investigations.
The president has already publicly decried the federal scrutiny of Giuliani. “So now they are after the legendary ‘crime buster’ and greatest Mayor in the history of NYC, Rudy Giuliani,” he tweeted in October. “He may seem a little rough around the edges sometimes, but he is also a great guy and wonderful lawyer. Such a one sided Witch Hunt going on in USA. Deep State. Shameful!”
People familiar with the matter have said that Barr was briefed on the investigation in Manhattan related to Giuliani’s associates shortly after taking office a year ago. His involvement since then, if any, is unclear.
The Washington Post reported late last year that Barr had counseled Trump in general terms that Giuliani had become a liability to him and a problem for the administration.
A spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Manhattan declined to comment. A spokeswoman for the Justice Department declined to comment.
Giuliani did not respond to requests for comment.
He has said his former office is pursuing the “most unfair, vindictive investigation they have ever conducted.”
“I believe that the leaks and the investigation is intended to intimidate me as the president’s lawyer,” Giuliani told The Post in December. “I am fully confident that I did not commit any crimes of any kind.”
An attorney for Parnas, Joseph A. Bondy, said: “It comes as no surprise to us at all that the Southern District is continuing its investigation, whether into the activities of Mr. Giuliani, Mr. Parnas or others.”
“As prosecutors have consistently said, they may well bring additional charges against additional people, as well as Mr. Parnas, and as always we’re prepared to defend ourselves on any new allegations,” Bondy said.
A federal judge in New York has set an October trial date for Parnas and Fruman, along with two of their business partners, on charges that the men routed illegal foreign contributions to U.S. political campaigns. Prosecutors have said in court that their investigation is ongoing.
All four men have pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors in Manhattan have been exploring a wide range of potential crimes — including wire fraud and failure to register as a foreign agent — as part of the investigation, as The Post previously reported. After the arrests of Parnas and Fruman in October, investigators sought information from witnesses about Giuliani’s international consulting business.
Late last year, prosecutors subpoenaed a consulting firm founded by former FBI director Louis J. Freeh, which hired Giuliani to write an August 2018 letter to Romanian officials calling for an amnesty for people prosecuted for corruption, The Post previously reported.
As the House pursued its impeachment inquiry in the fall, little additional information emerged about the New York probe.
But people familiar with the investigation say the FBI took new investigative steps as the Senate impeachment trial drew to a close in early February.
Prosecutors in recent weeks have sought information about Giuliani and his consulting firm Giuliani Partners, as well as about Yovanovitch, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The ambassador was recalled from her post in May after a campaign by Parnas, Fruman and Giuliani painted her as disloyal to Trump.
Yovanovitch testified to Congress that she believed they perceived her as an impediment to their business interests in Ukraine. Prosecutors have alleged in court papers that Parnas and Fruman acted against her at the direction of one or more Ukrainian government officials.
In an interview last month on MSNBC, Parnas apologized to Yovanovitch, saying he now believes he was wrong about her.
In recent weeks, federal investigators have also continued to ask about Victor Shokin and Yuri Lutsenko, two former Ukrainian prosecutors who Giuliani has said provided him with information about Biden and his son Hunter, who served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company. Investigators have also made new inquiries about Naftogaz, Ukraine’s state-owned gas company, with which Parnas and Fruman sought business last year. A top executive for the company was interviewed in November as part of the investigation.
Investigators also appear intently focused on Parnas’s financial practices, according to the people familiar with their interest.
Prosecutors told a judge last year that Parnas appeared to have access to “seemingly limitless sources of foreign funding” and had received a $1 million loan in September from the lawyer for a Ukrainian gas tycoon under indictment in Chicago.
Recently, investigators contacted individuals who Parnas had urged to invest in his business ventures.
Giuliani has said that he was paid $500,000 in 2018 to advise one such enterprise, a company co-founded by Parnas called Fraud Guarantee that offered insurance to guard investors from losing money as a result of fraud.
A New York lawyer, Charles Gucciardo, funded Giuliani’s half-million-dollar fee through an investment in the company, according to a statement from his attorney Randy Zelin.
Gucciardo made the investment because “he believed that Mr. Giuliani — the former Mayor of New York City; former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York; and, the first name in cybersecurity — was in front of, behind, and alongside the Company,” Zelin said in November.
Parnas used Giuliani’s involvement in the company to urge others to invest, according to people familiar with the pitches.
Federal prosecutors also have recently sought information about an Atlanta-based data firm called Clickagy, the people said. Their interest in the company has not been previously reported.
Clickagy and Parnas’s Fraud Guarantee shared a major investor, according to people familiar with the businesses. Clickagy used Parnas’s connections in GOP circles to attempt to land a contract with America First, the primary pro-Trump super PAC, according to people familiar with the firm.
Clickagy’s chief executive, Harry Maugans, declined to comment.
America First has said it is voluntarily cooperating with the investigation. A spokeswoman declined to comment on Clickagy.
In recent days, investigators have interviewed the investor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation.
He told The Post that he bought $250,000 of shares in Fraud Guarantee in 2016. The investor said that he has received no returns on his payment and that it is not clear to him whether Fraud Guarantee was a real business.
He said he was persuaded to invest in part because he said Parnas told him he could use his high-powered connections to pitch Trump on an idea the investor had to build a temple in Jerusalem on a platform high above the existing city.
The investor, whose interactions with Parnas were first reported by the Wall Street Journal, said he believed the proposal could bring together Judaism, Christianity and Islam — and usher in peace to the Middle East.
At a meeting in Florida, the investor showed Parnas a painting that he had commissioned of the temple, according to Artem Mirolevich, the painter, who was also present.
“Parnas said that Trump was the type of person who might be interesting in building something like this,” Mirolevich said, noting that the investor had envisioned an 800-story structure built over the ancient city.
Mirolevich said that after the meeting, he unsuccessfully tried to persuade his friend not to invest with Parnas. “I told him: ‘It’s in the company’s name. He’s telling you there will be fraud. It’s guaranteed,’ ” he said.
But the investor decided to proceed because he wanted to show Trump his idea for the temple in Jerusalem, he and Mirolevich said.
Bondy, the attorney for Parnas, declined to comment.
The investor said that after he paid Parnas, the Florida businessman became difficult to reach. But after months of little contact, Parnas invited him to attend his newborn son’s Jewish circumcision ceremony in Boca Raton in October 2018, the investor said.
He said he was surprised when Giuliani was also among the guests. Around the same time, the investor said he received a letter informing him that Giuliani had joined Fraud Guarantee as an adviser.
After traveling extensively with Giuliani last year and assisting his efforts in Ukraine, Parnas is now a vocal critic of Trump and his attorney.
He turned over hundreds of pages of documents to House impeachment investigators. In media interviews, he has said his work in Ukraine was directed by Trump and Giuliani. His attorney also made public two videos he said were recorded by Parnas’s business partner, Fruman, showing the two men meeting with Trump twice in 10 days in 2018 at small gatherings for elite donors.
Parnas has said he is speaking out in part because he believes that the criminal investigation is an effort to undercut his account of wrongdoing by the president.
His attorney has asked that Barr recuse himself from the investigation and appoint a special prosecutor to handle the matter instead. A Justice Department spokeswoman has declined to comment on the request.

William Taylor Jr., a key impeachment witness, quietly returns home to Trump’s Washington
By Greg Jaffe | Published February 14 at 12:34 PM EST | Washington Post | Posted February 15, 2020 |
Seven days after his closed-door testimony in the House impeachment hearings — seven days after his face was plastered across every screen in America — William B. Taylor Jr. found himself in Mariupol, some 5,000 miles from Washington and just 12 miles from the front lines of a war between the Ukrainian military and Russian-backed separatists.
The setting was an economic conference sponsored by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that spoke volumes about the country’s uncertain state. The nearest airport to Mariupol had been destroyed in the fighting. For many of the attendees, the fastest route to the conference was a brutal 18-hour train ride.
Among the conference’s big attractions was a chance to pitch ideas for sparking the economy to Ukraine’s president. Each of the hundreds of attendees got two minutes.
The other big lure was Taylor. Well-wishers swarmed him. The governor of the war-scarred Luhansk region, still partially controlled by Kremlin-backed separatists, told him that he had read all his prepared testimony and quoted back a few of the kind words Taylor had said about Ukraine.
By early January, Taylor was back home in the Washington suburbs trying to make sense of the surreal swirl of his time in Ukraine, his testimony before Congress and the rancorous aftermath.
His mind turned to Mariupol and then to President Trump, whose antipathy toward Ukraine was, for him, among the biggest mysteries of all.
“I’m trying to figure out where [it] came from,” he said, “this deep suspicion of this little country. I mean, it’s 44 million people. It’s not that big a deal.”
Trump has emerged from his acquittal in the Senate impeachment trial aggrieved and triumphant. Those who testified against him — a mix of political appointees and career bureaucrats — are trying to figure out their place in the Washington left behind following his acquittal.
Last week, Trump banished Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman from the White House and suggested he should face disciplinary action from the military for testifying against him. Vindman returned to the Pentagon, which has said it isn’t investigating him.
Marie Yovanovitch, forced from her position as ambassador in Kyiv by Trump last spring, left the government and delivered a powerful speech lamenting the costs to the State Department and America’s standing in the world. “An amoral, keep-’em-guessing foreign policy that substitutes threats, fear and confusion for trust cannot work over the long haul,” she warned on Wednesday.
The aftermath for Taylor, who was hurriedly dispatched to Ukraine as an emergency fill-in for Yovanovitch, has been quieter. He’s currently taking time off, catching up with his family and considering his next move.
Like Yovanovitch, he has had plenty of time to ponder the damage. Taylor dedicated his life to service within the vast foreign policy institutions that the United States built following the war. Since his days as an infantry officer in Vietnam, he lived by their rules, which he saw as “cumbersome, but thorough,” a necessity for a great power whose routine decisions could alter the course of millions of lives in faraway places like Kyiv or Mariupol.
Trump was the first president Taylor had served who held these institutions in contempt. He doubted their loyalty and distrusted their expertise, often preferring the musings of television commentators or his conspiracy-minded personal attorney to the experts on his White House staff and in his intelligence briefings.
Most Americans describe Trump in Manichaean terms — he’s brilliant or terrible, compassionate or irredeemably cruel. To Taylor, he was beyond his comprehension.
“I don’t understand the president,” he said. “I can’t get in his head to see what motivates him and what he thinks.”
Sometimes, he wondered if it was even worth trying.
'IT'S NO LONGER HYPOTHETICAL'
Last spring, Taylor was out of the government and serving as the executive vice president at the U.S. Institute of Peace, a nonpartisan think tank established by Congress, when George Kent, a former State Department colleague and future impeachment inquiry witness, asked if he might “hypothetically” be interested in serving as the ambassador to Ukraine. Yovanovitch was fighting a smear campaign fomented by self-interested Ukrainian politicians and the president’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani.
The following day, Kent called him back. “It’s no longer hypothetical,” he said.
Taylor’s wife, Deborah, urged him to reject the job. A big worry was her husband’s reputation. Nearly five decades of government service had instilled in him a respect for his chain of command and an instinct for compromise. Both were potentially lethal traits inside the Trump administration.
“Bill’s Achilles’ heel — and everyone has them — is wanting to find agreement,” she said. “I was concerned he’d sully himself. . . . He passed that test.”
Shortly before he left for Ukraine, Taylor got a lesson in how power works in Trump’s Washington. In May, he learned from officials in the White House that Trump had refused to sign a letter congratulating Ukraine’s president on his resounding election victory.
Taylor raised his concerns about Trump with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
“I think your boss doesn’t like Ukraine,” Taylor said, still doubtful that he would take the job.
“You’re right, and it’s my job to turn him around,” Pompeo replied, according to several U.S. officials familiar with the meeting who spoke on the condition of anonymity to speak frankly.
Taylor then mentioned the unsigned letter. “Find out about this,” Pompeo told his staff. Within 36 hours, a new letter had been drafted and signed by the president.
Taylor tucked a copy of it in a briefcase and headed off to Ukraine.
'PATRIOTIC AND FRAGILE UKRAINE'
Each morning at 8:30 in Kyiv, Ukrainian troops gather in formation outside the Ministry of Defense. A soldier rings a bell. Shots are fired. An officer then reads the names of the Ukrainian soldiers killed on that day over the course of the country’s six-year war with Russian-backed separatists.
When Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) visited Kyiv last fall, Taylor took them to the ceremony. He wanted them to see a bit of Ukraine as he saw it: patriotic, fragile and under daily assault from Vladimir Putin’s Russia.
Taylor arrived in Ukraine in June, just weeks after Zelensky won the presidency in a landslide. He believed that the 2013 Ukrainian revolution, followed by Russia’s invasion a few months later and annexation of Crimea, had created a new sense of solidarity in the country. Corruption was still rampant. The war had ravaged the economy. But, there was a hope for Ukraine that wasn’t present when he left in 2009, after concluding his stint as ambassador under President George W. Bush.
“There’s an idealism, a spirit of youth, a charm represented by this new president,” he said. “It’s a chance. A real chance, which you don’t get very often in the history of countries.”
About a month after Taylor arrived in Kyiv, he learned via a routine conference call with Washington that Trump had ordered a hold on $391 million in aid to Ukraine. Initially, he assumed it was a misunderstanding.
Weeks passed, and the hold remained in place. Kurt Volker, the administration’s special representative to Ukraine, and Gordon Sondland, a Trump megadonor serving as ambassador to the European Union, blamed the problem on Giuliani. Both later became impeachment witnesses.
Their fix was to broker a deal that might get Giuliani to back off. Giuliani was looking for dirt on former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter, who had been paid between $50,000 and $100,000 a month to serve on the board of a Ukrainian gas company. The Ukrainians wanted an Oval Office visit for Zelensky.
Taylor urged Zelensky’s top advisers to keep their distance. “Rudy is up to no good. If you think he’s doing this because he cares about Ukraine, you’re wrong,” he warned Andriy Yermak, a top aide to Zelensky.
On Aug. 27, national security adviser John Bolton visited Kyiv for a meeting with Zelensky, who still did not know the aid was frozen. Before Bolton left, Taylor asked for five minutes with him at his hotel. Taylor worried that if the aid freeze became public, it would undermine Zelensky and strengthen Putin. Bolton asked Taylor to make the case for the aid to Pompeo in a cable.
“It’ll get noticed,” he promised.
In the cable’s last line, Taylor made it clear that if the hold wasn’t lifted, he wouldn’t be able to support the policy and would resign. It was the first time in almost 50 years of government service that he had threatened to quit.
At that point, Taylor had no idea a CIA whistleblower had accused Trump of using “the power of his office to solicit interference . . . in the 2020 U.S. election.” The complaint, emailed to the intelligence community’s inspector general on Aug. 12, was a bomb ready to explode.
'A REQUEST TO LEAVE'
By early January, it was clear that Trump was most likely going to be acquitted. In Kyiv, Taylor got a glimpse of the likely aftermath. He was finishing his tour as acting ambassador and preparing for a Pompeo visit on Jan. 2.
A senior aide to the secretary informed him that Pompeo wanted to meet with the Ukrainian president in Kyiv one-on-one, without embassy staff to take notes.
“I’m going to protest,” Taylor told officials in Washington. “I’m going to become a pain on this.” Taylor worried that such an arrangement would signal that Pompeo didn’t trust his embassy staff. Ukrainians might conclude that they couldn’t trust the embassy either.
In Kyiv, Taylor quickly realized that he — not the embassy — was the problem.
Taylor hadn’t spoken to Pompeo since his meeting in May, before taking the job. But, he knew that his testimony had upset the president, who blasted him as a “never Trumper,” a subset of Republicans Trump described as “human scum.”
So, Taylor proposed that his deputy accompany the secretary to the meeting. Pompeo’s staff agreed. Then they asked Taylor to leave his position six days early so that he would not be in charge when Pompeo arrived in Kyiv.
Last month, Taylor returned to Washington and the modest bungalow that he and his wife bought in 1983 as he was beginning his government career.
Scattered amid a lifetime of mementos from postings in Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine and Israel were reminders of the last few tumultuous months.
On the coffee table by the front door, there was a picture of Taylor testifying before Congress — a gift from Yovanovitch. Upstairs, a block of wood with the message “Stand Your Ground,” etched in Russian, sat on Taylor’s desk. He had been given it a few days earlier by another impeachment witness.
At the dining room table, Deborah, a biblical scholar, was translating a text from ancient Greek. A bracelet from Ukraine bearing an anti-Putin epithet dangled from her wrist.
Taylor had caught snippets of the Senate trial in the car. His wife, who had watched “every frigging second” of the House hearings, was avoiding it.
“I am not learning anything,” she said of the Senate proceedings. “I am just experiencing the emotion.”
Earlier that day, Pompeo made his visit to Kyiv, which had been delayed a month. Taylor was pleased to see a photograph of Kristina Kvien, the acting ambassador, with Pompeo and the Ukrainian foreign minister.
After his meeting, Pompeo pledged that America’s support for Ukraine “would not waver.” To back up that promise, the Trump administration said it was budgeting another $400 million in aid to Ukraine for 2021. The move had strong bipartisan backing from Congress.
Some former officials, such as Yovanovitch, were warning of the damage wrought by Trump. “Right now, the State Department is in trouble,” she said.
Taylor tended to focus on how well Washington’s institutions had held up, despite the battering.
Trump might still despise Kyiv. His strange affection for Putin almost certainly remained. At the highest levels of government, senior officials still had to work around Trump’s grudges, impulses and rages.
But for all the chaos of the past few months, Taylor noted that the administration’s official policy toward Ukraine and Russia — articulated by Pompeo, supported by Congress and codified in White House strategy documents — remained essentially unchanged. Ukraine was still America’s ally. Russia was still an adversary. This was one more lesson of the impeachment saga. In much of institutional Washington — Bill Taylor’s Washington — the president was strangely the outsider.

WILLIAM BARR HAS ENERGETICALLY PLAYED THE ROLE OF PRESIDENTIAL WINGMAN
By Ruth Marcus | Published February 14 at 6:58 PM EST | Washington Post | Posted February 15, 2020 |
“I have so far chosen not to!” President Trump tweeted Friday morning, describing his asserted right to interfere with criminal cases, and even to order up criminal prosecutions. So far. Chilling words. So much for his attorney general’s admonition to cut out the tweeting about the Justice Department.
Perhaps no president — yes, including Richard M. Nixon — has been so convinced that he is entitled to weaponize criminal law to punish his political enemies, or to use his power to shield allies from criminal consequences. For years, Trump has lamented that he is limited in doing so by prevailing norms of presidential behavior.
“You know, the saddest thing is that because I’m the president of the United States, I am not supposed to be involved with the Justice Department,” Trump said in 2017. “Look at what’s happening with the Justice Department. Well, why aren’t they going after Hillary Clinton with her emails? . . . I’m very unhappy with it.”
Now, the president’s unhappiness persists, and the constraints on his behavior have lessened if not vanished, with Trump surrounded by enablers and emboldened by acquittal. According to a report in The Post, the president “has publicly and privately raged in recent months about wanting investigations of those he sees as enemies, including former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden, former FBI director James B. Comey and former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe.”
We are left with what passes for a firewall: Attorney General William P. Barr. “I’m happy to say that in fact, the president has never asked me to do anything in a criminal case,” Barr assured ABC News’s Pierre Thomas on Thursday. “If he were to say, you know, go investigate somebody . . . and you sense it’s because they’re a political opponent, then an attorney general shouldn’t carry that out, wouldn’t carry that out.” Perhaps to drive that point home, Barr’s Justice Department announced Friday that it would not pursue charges against McCabe for allegedly lying to investigators.
But do not delude yourself. All is not well.
First, we have a president who is an autocrat, one who does not share the common understanding, expressed by Barr, that the mechanisms of justice should not be used against political opponents. As Trump tweeted, he may as president have “the legal right” to interfere in a criminal case in the sense that nothing in the Constitution prohibits him from doing so.
But previous presidents have understood that it is wrong to pervert the criminal-justice system — our own or that of a foreign country — to their own political ends. As Susan Hennessey and Benjamin Wittes explain in their new book, “Unmaking the Presidency: Donald Trump’s War on the World’s Most Powerful Office,” Trump “has never made the slightest pretense of respecting his highest prosecutors’ autonomy. The most remarkable feature of his behavior toward law enforcement is how overt it is. Where mid-century presidents struck a pose of virtue in public and quietly tolerated or encouraged abuses, Trump openly calls for the abuses.”
Second is the scary concept of Barr as firewall. Let’s assume that Barr, as he asserted, would not accede to an outright order by the president to pursue a political opponent. Of course, Trump could fire Barr — as he did his previous attorney general, as he did the director of the FBI. If past performance is any guide, congressional Republicans are too cowed to respond.
In any event, there are more subtle ways in which the attorney general can bend federal prosecution to presidential desires. One was on display in recent days, as Barr took the extraordinary step of withdrawing the sentencing recommendation of career prosecutors in the case of Trump crony Roger Stone.
Barr insisted that he acted on his own and that he reached the decision before the president tweeted about the proposed seven- to nine-year sentence as a “horrible and very unfair situation.” But Barr was fully aware of the president’s fury over Stone’s conviction for lying to Congress and witness tampering. The attorney general could channel the president’s desires without them having been explicitly communicated to him.
Perhaps, as Barr argued, the prosecutors recommended too harsh a sentence. But it is not the attorney general’s job to flyspeck every sentencing memorandum. There seems little doubt that Barr was reviewing the Stone recommendation precisely because of Stone’s association with the president — which is precisely why he should not have inserted himself into the matter. Nor was it necessary to ensure that justice was done: The sentencing decision is up to the judge.
Barr’s involvement was no aberration. Since taking office a year ago, the attorney general has energetically inhabited the role of presidential wingman, including pre-spinning the special counsel’s report to Trump’s benefit. Now comes news that Barr has asked outside prosecutors to review the prosecution of former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, about whom the president once asked FBI director James B. Comey: “Can you give him a break?”
How convenient for Trump. He doesn’t have to order his attorney general to do anything if Barr is going to do Trump’s bidding without having to be asked.

Bonding exercises cut discipline disparity for students of color
Exercises that address middle school students’ worries about belonging can help black and Latino boys develop better relationships with teachers, according to new research.
The exercises also sharply reduce their risk of receiving discipline citations years into the future, report researchers.
Their research, which appears in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, found that guided exercises in two or more 25-minute class sessions early in sixth or seventh grade reduced teacher reports of discipline issues—such as for disrespect, defiance, or insubordination—among black and Latino boys by 57 percent over two years in one study. In a second study, the reduction for black boys was 65 percent from sixth grade through 12th grade.
“When students and teachers both begin school aware of negative stereotypes that label boys of color troublemakers, small initial differences can compound.”
The researchers hope that their findings can help address the discipline disparity between black and Latino students and other groups. According to the US Government Accountability Office, in 2013-14, black boys represented 7.9 percent of public school students but 25.2 percent of suspended students.
Teacher reports of discipline issues, the researchers say, arise from a cycle of negative interactions that negative social stereotypes between teachers and students influence.
“When students and teachers both begin school aware of negative stereotypes that label boys of color troublemakers, small initial differences can compound,” says Gregory Walton, a fellow in undergraduate education and associate professor of psychology at the School of Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University.
“A small initial misbehavior can be seen as more severe by teachers. And children already worried about fairness and disrespect can react strongly to early negative experiences. Then small misbehaviors and initial mistrust can grow.”
How could troubled relationships between teachers and students improve? In a prior study, Walton found that a brief online exercise to help middle school teachers take an empathetic rather than punitive mindset with misbehaving students cut the student suspension rate by 50 percent.
The latest research explores the flip side: Whether middle schoolers who feel more secure in their belonging also have agency to build better relationships with teachers.
Starting at the beginning
The psychologists conducted two studies with a diverse mix of boys and girls: one with 669 students starting seventh grade at two middle schools with large Latino populations in the western United States and a second with 137 students beginning sixth grade at a middle school with a large black population in New England.
To better understand interactions between students and classroom teachers, the psychologists focused on when their relationship begins: the start of the school year, which for many middle schoolers can feel daunting. Students may wonder if they will fit in to the new environment, whether they will make friends, and if their new teachers will treat them well. Some might question whether they are prepared for a more challenging academic environment.
“…if you are already worried about belonging and mistreatment, bad early experiences can seem to confirm your fears.”
These concerns are particularly acute for students of color, Walton says. In addition to dealing with the changes and emotions that middle school brings, they must reckon with a growing awareness of racial stereotypes and the possibility that these stereotypes could affect the treatment they receive.
“This is a context ripe for worries about belonging,” Walton says. “And if you are already worried about belonging and mistreatment, bad early experiences can seem to confirm your fears.”
For both studies, the researchers developed a social-belonging intervention based on previous research from Walton and Geoffrey Cohen, a professor in organizational studies in education and business and a professor of psychology, which focused on the transition to college. They found that sharing stories about normal worries about belonging and how belonging improves with time helped first-generation and minority students build a sense of belonging and supported their academic success.
Here, in two 25-minute class sessions, sixth and seventh grade students read stories from older pupils that emphasized normal challenges to belonging in middle school.
In one story, a student says, “I didn’t like taking tests at the beginning of sixth grade… I thought I wasn’t prepared and that my teachers… would think I wasn’t smart. Sometimes… my stomach hurt. But the teachers were really nice. They helped me get better even if I didn’t do well at first.”
Next, students reflected on why students in middle school might worry about “fitting in” at first and why they might feel more confident over time.
Some students in the first study also completed additional exercises, including one focused on a growth mindset. They learned that intelligence can grow with hard work, effective strategies, and help from others—a message that can help students persevere through challenges, Walton says. Others had an opportunity to reflect on their core values—an exercise Walton also hoped could promote belonging and help students navigate potentially threatening experiences in school.
Teachers and students
In the first study, black and Latino boys who received the three exercises together received 57 percent fewer reports of discipline issues in seventh and eighth grade compared with peers in the control group. The growth mindset exercise alone was also effective: reports fell by 75 percent compared with the control condition.
In addition, the exercises seemed to cut off negative cycles with teachers. In the second study, the researchers found that black boys in the control group experienced a rise in discipline citations that required the subjective judgment of teachers, such as insubordination in sixth grade and then again in seventh grade. Each year subjective citations started low but increased over the year. These experiences can both reflect and fuel a toxic relationship between students and teachers, Walton says.
By the end of seventh grade, these black boys also reported a lower sense of belonging and greater worries about being treated in accordance with negative stereotypes.
But as the researchers found, the belonging intervention prevented those exacerbating patterns where negative experiences can compound. Teacher reports of discipline issues among black boys started low in sixth and seventh grades and stayed low over each school year.
Altogether, the belonging intervention delivered in two classes early in sixth grade reduced discipline citations for black boys by 65 percent through the end of high school—a seven-year period—closing the disparity with white boys by 75 percent.
The researchers emphasize that there are many causes of racial disparities in school discipline citations that officials can address, such as changing policies around discipline and teacher behavior.
“But it is also important to consider the psychological experience of children,” says psychologist J. Parker Goyer, a postgraduate fellow and the study’s lead author. “This experience can interact with social contexts to create and maintain differences between groups. Yet when this experience is addressed early enough, it is possible to forestall a negative cycle and make it positive.”
Additional coauthors are from Stanford; Penn State; the University of Washington; Yale University; Ohio State University; and the University of California, Berkeley. Grants from the William T. Grant Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the Raikes Foundation, and the Spencer Foundation funded the research.

How To Make Money: Everything You Need To Know
How can you earn more money?
You’d think a question this simple would have a simple answer.
Yet experts’ attempts to explain the nuances of earning — whether disguised as personal finance, business management, or the importance of education — could fill a file server.
You could read all the articles, watch all the how-to videos, listen to all the podcasts, and even attend the right business school, but still not know the best ways to make money.
Why is it all so complicated?
I have an idea: It’s because only you are qualified to answer the question of how you can make more money.
Think about it:
Just like our relationships, our time, our food preferences, and even our financial choices are personal.
What works for me may not work for you.
Likewise, I might not survive a day doing something you’d excel at.
And while education, knowledge, and experience matter a lot, they are only the ingredients.
You have to get into the kitchen to cook up your own recipe for financial success and independence:
Are you a people person? Then you should flavor your recipe with face-to-face interactions.
Are you an introvert? Maybe you need a dash of stay-at-home independence.
Are you short on time? Find a recipe with a short prep-time but an abundant yield.
Do you need a flexible schedule? Sprinkle in some freelance work — something like real estate or ad hoc computer programming, for example.
Whatever the case, your recipe must reflect the reality of your personal preferences, your daily challenges, and the way you live.
You can find ideas (and hopefully some valuable advice) in posts like the one you’re reading right now, but you’re the expert on you.
With that in mind, let’s get cooking (especially if you can make money doing it!).
Different Paths, But One Common Goal: Earning More Money!
As you know, finding your own path is essential, but let’s also make sure your path leads where we all want to go: a more profitable and financially secure future.
To do that, get to know more about your local economy (or the broader national or international economy) so you’ll know what skills or products are in demand right now and into the future.
In a dynamic economy like ours, any list of ways to earn money comes with an expiration date.
And, I could spend days listing all the possibilities for earning more money and still not include the one thing you’re looking for.
Still, we need some kind of order for organizing possible paths to earning power.
I like the following three categories:
Entrepreneurship
Education-related
Side hustles
Let’s explore these categories as you determine where to begin or continue your journey toward making more money.
Earning Through Entrepreneurship
To earn your living by owning your own company: It’s part of the American Dream.
And we’ve all heard the legendary success stories about people such as:
Sam Walton, whose family barely survived the Great Depression. He opened his own tiny grocery store after World War II with financial help from his father in law. The store, of course, grew into Walmart (and Sam’s Club and a few other variations).
Oprah Winfrey, who was raised in poverty and became one of the most successful TV stars of all time, and who also offers reading advice to millions.
Andrew Carnegie who, as a child, worked as a bobbin boy in a cotton mill (before child labor laws prohibited it). He earned billions in steel and helped transform our economy for the industrial age.
Steve Jobs, a college dropout who likely invented the phone or the computer you’re holding right now.
You may be thinking: But these people are the exceptions.
Nobody ever mentions the thousands of inventors, industrialists, retailers, and entertainers who fell flat on their faces.
You’d be right, of course.
More importantly, though, I also didn’t mention the thousands of people who have enjoyed success on a more moderate scale — all the people who went from living paycheck-to-paycheck at a job they hated to supporting their families by owning a business.
This list is longer than you may think, and it’s full of people like you and me — ordinary people who had a vision for a better future and worked hard to make it happen.
I’ll spare you the motivational speech about how you can’t succeed without the possibility of failure, and about how even today’s billionaires can tell you about their ever-growing lists of failures.
Instead, let’s look at some possible paths to entrepreneurial success, all of which allow you to be your own boss and, in most cases, to make your own rules:
Franchising
Let’s say you love Five Guys Burgers & Fries, an East Coast hamburger place, but the chain doesn’t have a location near you.
As you drive along looking for someplace to eat, you may tell your significant other: “You know, somebody really ought to open a Five Guys on this side of town. They’d make a killing.”
Well, that “somebody” may be you.
You could look into franchising requirements for Five Guys (or whatever your favorite store or restaurant actually is) and open your very own location.
Most stores require some personal investment, and they may have some other requirements, too. You also wouldn’t have total freedom over every decision you make since the corporation you’re partnering with will have its own set of standards.
But if you have a flair for business management but not necessarily a niche product that’s all your own, this could be your path.
Selling Stuff Online
If you need a lower bar for admission into entrepreneurship than opening a franchise, online sales may be your thing. It’s not all knitted scarves or unneeded football tickets these days.
People shop all the time on Craigslist, eBay, Amazon, and countless other sites for used and new products.
To succeed, you need to be an expert on a product so you can make a profit by connecting others with exactly what they’re looking for.
If you’re an expert on guitars, for example, you could spend your weekends shopping garage sales, estate sales, and auctions. You’d see a lot of junk.
But since you know your product line, you’d also recognize the vintage Gibson J-200 someone is selling for a song, and you’ll know how easy it will be to find a premium buyer online.
Along with expertise in your product lines, you’ll need great customer service chops and some patience as you get your business rolling.
Selling Your Advice
It’s not all about tangible products.
You can also sell your expertise, whether you are an expert in business, the arts, engineering, industry, retail, etc.
Thanks to Skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts and similar services, you can even offer advice online, whether you’re teaching painting lessons or showing someone how to integrate a drone into their wedding videography business.
Just look at YouTube.
Whether you’re fixing a washing machine or changing your spark plugs, chances are you can find a video of someone else doing the same thing.
What do you know an awful lot about?
Whatever it is, someone else may need your advice. Whether you charge for one-on-one sessions or cast a wider net with more general videos, you can turn your smarts into a source of income.
Offering a Service
Do you cut your own grass?
Shop for your own groceries?
Pick up your own dry-cleaning?
More and more people are turning to services to do these sorts of things, which means there may be a growing market in your community for someone to perform these services.
By developing a steady clientele and setting some reasonable limits (no 2 a.m. runs to Taco Bell, perhaps?) you can have your own courier service.
Start by placing an ad in your community’s newspapers or free weeklies, and mix in some patience, some flexibility, and a pricing plan that’s fair to you and your customers.
Other Entrepreneurial Ideas
We’ve hit some high points, but this is by no means an all-inclusive list. If you have a business idea, you’ve already caught the entrepreneurial spirit.
Maybe it’s time to start looking into financing, business partners, or marketing strategies.
Not everyone is destined for business ownership though.
Keep reading to learn about other routes to financial success.
Using Education to Unlock Earnings
For several generations it was almost a given: A college degree would open doors for the rest of your career.
Federal labor statistics showed (and still show) higher earning power for people with a four-year degree. So college became a rite of passage across the country.
But what happens if you’re not in a position to pursue higher education?
What if you already have a family and a full-time job?
Or what if taking a bunch of English and philosophy courses just isn’t your thing?
There’s good news for you, too.
You can still unlock higher earnings through education without going the traditional college route.
Let’s take a look at some traditional and alternative educational paths to show what I mean:
Certificate Programs
College can teach critical thinking skills, helping you succeed in a variety of professions.
However, a four-year degree may not teach specific trade skills.
In many professions, employers value specific, hands-on skills over more general thinking skills.
I think it’s best to have both, but to provide employers with skilled employees, many community and technical colleges offer certificate programs for professions such as:
Welding
Dental assistants
HVAC
Web design
Nursing assistants
Plumbing
Electrical work
Auto technicians
Information technology
Cosmetology
Manufacturing.
Certificate programs usually cost a lot less than traditional college courses, and they may require less of your time.
It’s also possible the community college in your area offers night classes and other ways to accommodate classes to your work schedule.
In many professions, getting “certified” unlocks higher wages.
Traditional College Degrees
Of course, skilled trades aren’t for everybody.
Some of us need more time to figure out a suitable profession.
One of the neat things about traditional, four-year college programs is the opportunity to learn a little bit about a lot of things, which means you may come across the right fit when you least expect it.
I remember a friend who started college with no firm plans for the future. She signed up for classes, got her parking pass, and all that.
Then, on the first day of classes, she became enamored with the whole concept of chemistry. She declared chemistry her major, graduated with a degree, and started a successful (and high-paying) career as an industrial chemist.
Most of us will need more than one day of college to find our calling. For some people, it takes two years to decide on a major. Others may go all four years without finding the answer.
For those folks, graduate school for advanced degrees may be on the horizon.
Advanced Degrees
Physicians, high-level business executives, researchers, college professors, and most lawyers have one thing in common, and it’s not necessarily their tax bracket: They hold advanced degrees in their fields of study.
Advanced degrees offer a level of specialization (and earning power) beyond what a four-year diploma or a certificate can give you.
People who research the effects of school nutrition on academic performance or who diagnose medical conditions using a microscope most likely have advanced degrees.
Usually, you need a bachelor’s degree before starting on an advanced degree and expect to spend upwards of $100,000 in tuition for some advanced degrees.
It could all be worth it, financially, when you land your first degree-specific job.
Little or No Post-Secondary Education
What happens if education beyond high school just hasn’t worked out for you?
All is not lost. Recent data shows 72 percent of people with only high school degrees had jobs in 2017.
You could start your own business, as I discussed above, or you could apply for more general labor jobs which don’t necessarily require a certificate or a diploma — jobs in traditionally labor-heavy fields such as:
Restaurant work
Assisting in construction sites
General manufacturing
Custodial work
Retail sales
Expect to start out in the lowest level at a company and with a lower pay rate. With hard work and by becoming a reliable employee, you may be able to start climbing the wage ladder.
But statistics tell a discouraging tale. Recent Pew Research data says people with a college education will earn, on average, $1 million more over the course of their careers than people with only a high school education.
What’s worse is that automation in manufacturing and the transition to online retail has made competition for these kinds of jobs more fierce.
Simply put, the economy is growing less friendly toward workers with little or no training.
Side Hustling Your Way to Greater Success
Let’s say you have a job, or you own your own business, and you’re pretty happy with what you earn.
Except, you just can’t seem to stay ahead of the curve financially. In August, when the kids need school supplies, your whole budget gets knocked out of whack.
And at year’s end you have to decide whether to contribute to your IRA or buy your wife a Christmas present.
Maybe it’s time for a side hustle.
What is a Side Hustle?
When you start marshaling your free time toward making extra money, you’re working your side hustle.
My favorite side hustles make the best use of your existing habits so you don’t have to think about work all the time.
For example, let’s say you work at a bank downtown and you paint houses as a side hustle. City Hall is near your bank branch.
So on your lunch break, you stop by City Hall to see who has taken out building permits for remodeling their homes. Someone who is remodeling, you think, may need to hire a painter.
In other words, you’d be able to generate job leads for your side hustle without going out of your way or making special trips.
That level of scheduling elegance isn’t a necessity, though. It matters more to be good at the services you’re offering, whatever they may be:
Real estate
Multi-level marketing
Contracting
Consulting
Freelance writing or editing
At-home manufacturing
At-home data entry or billing
Interior decorating
Video editing.
This list could go on for days, but you get the general idea: Find something you like to do and find a way to fit it into your schedule.
Here are some other tips to remember:
Create business cards, which you can do easily online. You never know when you’ll come across someone who needs (or knows someone who needs) a service you provide.
Set boundaries to preserve your work-life balance. When things get rolling, it can be hard to tell a potential client “no.” But if you say “yes” to everybody, you may find yourself working around the clock.
Be upfront with your steady gig. Make sure your full-time employer or your business partners know about your side hustle to avoid misunderstandings. Avoid treating your co-workers like a built-in customer base, and don’t use your company’s copying machines or other office equipment to support your side hustle unless you’ve made prior arrangements.
Be transparent with your side hustle customers, too. Let them know you have a full-time job and not necessarily available 24/7.
Keep up with your expenses and your earnings via receipts, invoices, or 1099 forms so you can report your figures properly at tax time. Ask a tax professional for advice before you start spending your earnings.
I also recommend setting some earnings goals.
How much you’d like to earn should influence the kind of job and the ferocity level of your side hustling.
For example…
If You’d Like to Earn an Extra $100 a Week
You could probably earn an extra $100 a week through Multi-Level Marketing (I’m not a huge fan, but hey, maybe it’s your thing) or by selling a line of products to your friends (think candles, beauty products, or environmentally friendly weed spray).
This kind of work takes an outgoing personality. If that’s not you, keep looking.
Some sort of at-home clerical work or light home repair, maybe.
Be careful about up-front costs, though. A lot of these opportunities — especially at-home clerical work or Multi-Level Marketing — require an investment, and if thing don’t go well you won’t recoup those costs.
Before spending any of your own money make sure you’ve talked to some other people who have given it a try. Online message boards can also give you some insight into the real cost of doing business.
Other ideas for earning about $100 a week:
Become a tutor: So you’re good at math or you’re a history buff? Put those interests to use by helping students in your neighborhood excel. Ask the staff at your local schools, put some cards out at the library, or put an ad on Craigslist or Facebook to get started.
Sell your stuff: Do you have boxes of books or DVDs you don’t really need? Find a used book store and sell your extra stuff. If you run out of stuff, go to some yard sales to get more or offer to help your neighbors go through and sell their extra stuff for a commission. You can also sell clothes, yard equipment, children’s toys. The list goes on and on.
Clean someone’s house: Cleaning up isn’t much fun, but earning extra money is. If you can get a couple regular customers, you’ll likely earn $100 or so a week. Be sure to factor in the cost of cleaning supplies.
Become a mystery shopper: Do you have a keen sense for detail? Put it to use as a mystery shopper. Essentially, you’re sharing your experiences as a customer with retail store managers.
If You’d Like to Earn $1,000 a Month
We’re getting more into part-time job territory here, but with side-hustling, you’re limited mainly by your time and determination.
You can take the $100-a-week ideas above and do them more aggressively — tutor more children, clean more houses, sell more stuff, etc.
Or, you could…
Start a blog about a topic you enjoy, be it cooking, yard work, interior design, reading, train travel, computer networking, music, appliance repair, electronics reviews, mountain climbing, parkour, gardening, water conservation — you get the idea! Develop an audience and monetize it. See my post about starting a blog here.
Be someone’s virtual assistant. Not all administrative support staff work on site and take notes in-person at meetings. You can also help an executive from the comfort of your home by scheduling appointments, typing letters, ordering supplies, and preparing presentations. Zirtual may be able to connect you with someone who needs your help, though it may ask for a fee to get you started. You could also send some emails to companies near you offering your services.
Become a substitute teacher. It’s a tough job, but if you like variety in your schedule and work locales, and you enjoy working with children and teens, check with your local school district; most districts have frequent openings. If you can find six or so hours a couple times a week, it could be worth your time.
If You’d Like to Earn an Extra $10,000 a Month
There comes a point when a side hustle becomes your main hustle. If you’re shooting for $10,000 a month, maybe you’ve reached that point.
If you’re serious about it, though, here’s something to keep in mind: To earn this kind of money on the side, you may need more inspiration than perspiration.
Can you think of a new way to do something which will make an existing process more efficient?
If so, your new knowledge will be worthwhile to others:
Can you develop an app to make car shopping more seamless?
Can you find a chemical process to make composting easier and more efficient?
Can you add a new layer of automation to an existing manufacturing process?
Innovations like these — combined with good business sense and the right kind of marketing — can put you on the map as an earner/entrepreneur
Sometimes, You Just Need More Money
For most of us, more money equals more freedom.
Some people can cut costs to come up with more flexibility in their monthly budgets. You can do things like:
Getting a basic phone to avoid cellular data charges.
Cutting the cable TV bill and getting a cheaper streaming service.
Putting off that new car to avoid a regular payment and higher auto insurance.
Keeping the AC set to 75 degrees to reduce energy bills.
Sometimes, though, you just need more money, plain and simple.
If your need is immediate, a side hustle may be the way to go.
Who knows? Your side hustle may turn into your full-time business.
If you’re planning the next 10 years and have some career goals, consider mixing in some education. Getting the right certification, diploma, or advanced degree should open some doors.
And, of course, if you’ve caught that entrepreneurial spirit, you may already have the skills you need.
Maybe it’s just a matter of getting the right financing to start your business growing.
Whatever your case, make sure you’re making a plan to meet your specific needs — financially, personally, and professionally.
I’ve heard it said, and I’ve found it to be true: Once you find your true calling, you no longer feel like you’re working.
Instead, you’re just turning what you enjoy doing into a steady flow of earned income.
