Hi all! I may soon be back after all— in a capacity very similar to how I used to use this account!

I'm thinking of this: What if, instead of trying to hardwire some newfangled plugin or attachment to my existing domain (odysseyeurobeat.com), I just-- use this? And point people to my Tumblr as my blog? I'd need to run it by my manager, but, well, it'd be simpler and I'd be back!

This post has taken off a bit, so I’d like to clear up some things that I see frequently mentioned in the reblogs:

Yes, Cotton Eye Joe is eurodance. It’s inspired by an American folk song, but the “where did you come from, where did you go, where did you come form cotton eye Joe” version we’ve all danced to is by an American-themed Swedish group called Rednex. They’re Swedish. Sorry lol

I am confused as to why everyone is surprised Caramelldansen and Dragostea Din Tei are eurodance but you do you man

No, nightcore and eurobeat are NOT the same thing, though they both kick ass. Nightcore typically involves speeding up a song and emphasizing the bass, but there’s much more to eurobeat than just a fast tempo. Eurobeat also typically involves a four-on-the-floor beat (as mentioned earlier) and synthesized stabs, and is always interspersed with a fast synthesized riff known as a “sabi” (this is the DODODODODODODO DODODODODODO DODO DO DODODO bit you hear at the beginning of Running in the 90s, for example). You’re also likely to hear something called “spooky.wav” that sounds like a high-pitched car revving, as well as a lot of tom rolls. Eurobeat also typically follows more or less the same structure: Intro -> sabi -> verse -> pre-chorus -> chorus -> sabi -> verse -> pre-chorus -> chorus -> some sort of bridge (usually this consists of a guitar solo or an unvoiced vocal section) -> chorus -> sabi -> end. There’s some variations, but this is more or less how they go. I know a lot of this probably makes little sense to people who don’t know stuff about making music (not that I’m any kind of expert myself), but suffice it to say that you can’t make a non-eurobeat song eurobeat simply by speeding it up, even if you add emphasis to the beats. Compare Kanpari’s eurobeat remix of Every Time We Touch to the nightcore version. Note the eurobeat remix’s incorporation of the main melody into a sabi, and the (perhaps somewhat excessive) use of spooky.wav. Notice also that it doesn’t speed up the vocals!

Yes, Odyssey Eurobeat, also known as T./J. Stebbins, Eurobeat Brony, Ken(dra) Blast, etc. came out as trans in 2021. She is still making music and also streams on Twitch- She’s always a delight, so check out her streams if you have the chance! Of her newer music, I personally particularly like Step Into the Fire (who doesn’t love a classic fire/desire song!) and Empress.

Yes, both eurobeat and eurodance can be found in Dance Dance Revolution! If you’re interested, physically able, and there’s a cabinet near you, give it a go. :)

With the popularity of Planet of the Bass I've noticed a lot of people getting eurobeat and eurodance confused. This is understandable but also REALLY funny to me as a eurobeat girlie. Reigning Eurobeat queen Odyssey (you may know her as the girl behind "Discord I'm howlin at the moon") has a good Twitter thread on the subject, but to add my own summary that's hopefully not too jargon-y:

It's PROBABLY EUROBEAT if:

Main lyrical themes are cars/driving/going Very Fast, Touhou, My Little Pony, or Japan (though the latter is more of a grey area since Japan comes up as a theme in some eurodance as well)

Between every verse is a synthesizer riff that sounds too fast to ever possibly be played live by human hands

There's a section where all but the last word or so of every line is omitted (this is where "dancing, we wanna feel the light is flashing, I send the power to myself" becomes "dancing... flashing... to myself")

There's an electric guitar solo (may or may not be synthesized)

The rhythm is a straight four-on-the-floor beat, aka it sounds like WOMP WOMP WOMP WOMP

There's car vroom vroom sound effects

It's PROBABLY EURODANCE (at least as opposed to eurobeat) if:

There's a rapper

Themes include world peace or partying (there are SOME party eurobeat songs but not as many, and it's not like eurobeat is pro-war, they're just driving too fast to think about it)

A New Approach To Performances - Feb 2, 2025

(AKA, "What do you MEAN I can't use one MIDI controller for two programs at once???")

Many of you may know that I perform live! At conventions, at clubs and bars, and wherever else the world needs a dose of eurobeat, I've been performing my work on stage for many, many years now! Fewer of you may know that I've tried different approaches to my shows over the years— for a little while, I'd just play the songs end to end; then I learned how to DJ, and now most of my sets revolve around DJing.

Lately, I've been revisiting that, and trying to figure out new and more compelling ways to perform. For the last year on and off, I've been attending choreography classes. These have not resulted in me properly learning routines, but they HAVE boosted my confidence tremendously. As well, in the last few months I've dreamed up possible performance methods and workflows that are less DJ-centric so I can focus on singing, crowd interactions, the occasional novelty (maybe some keytar sections or playing a drum pad?), and some fun video effects.

Today I began putting that into action by trying out my various MIDI controllers, trying new configurations in Ableton Live and Bitwig Studio, and... failing. A lot.

It turns out, some of my ambitions of mapping multiple functions in two applications to one MIDI knob were a bit more ambitious than I thought they would be. Getting programs on the same computer to talk to each other is surprisingly more difficult than I thought it'd be. Getting Resolume Avenue and Bitwig to communicate worked, Avenue and Ableton surprisingly less so. And even then, getting one or the other to handle MIDI clock information in basic integer values has proven frustrating.

Instead of still trying to mix between two "decks" like DJs do, I may do it one of a few ways: * Pre-mix the set in Bitwig or Ableton, find "pause points" for water/audience interaction. I'd basically be performing to an automated experience, which would be easier to predict and work around, but with little to no flexibility. * Load in songs as clips instead of full-length audio, which would buy me back my cue points from the DJ years; but I'd still have to mix between songs, which increases potential failure points. * Find more innovative ways to use Traktor (my current DJ software of choice) and video/lighting programming, or pre-mix a few songs together and THEN load those into Traktor. Current performance method wouldn't change dramatically, but the overall visual appeal would improve. * Make shorter versions of my songs I play through from start to end, like a traditional concert. (Doesn't seem right, given the nature of eurobeat; but it's not far from what a few eurobeat stars do already!) * Keep pushing towards building a whole one-laptop visual audio extravaganza, restraints be darned.

...I want to see what I can do with some MIDI automation and video for now, with maybe one play-in "novelty" and automated vocal effects with some optional ones I can dial in any time. It'll be a bit weird to surrender some of my control over which songs play when, but I want to start building a more compelling, less DJ-specific live set where I'm a bit more of a performer. I think I'm onto something with this, though time and figuring out the tech will tell.

I'll be chipping away at it in the month(s) ahead. Who knows? If I get it ready in time, it may not be long before it gets a test drive at a real show! 😉

His reservations on the sudden changes he has wi8tnessd in the realm of art since 1961. In his description of the positive developments witnessed in the realm of art, he attributes the quality of contemporary exhibitions to a decrease in connoisseurship withstanding.

The lecture describes the answer to art criticism, he refutes serious art criticism by comparing art to music that entails just picking up a violin and starting to play it without classes. He decries the internet revolution as great attributes to the decline of poetry aesthetics. The designers of poetry have shifted to marketing and selling rather than thinking, designing, and creating. The internet revolution has redefined art by the introduction of the software’s that ‘think’ and design for current artists. The internet forces the artist to be creator and seller at the same time hence shifting the concentration of the artists leading to the production of substandard artwork. 

The art maestro describes art as a fascinating tool that has no designated name to describe it. The American art curator appreciates the constant change in art and gives it credit to the contentious definition of art. The author describes his comfortability with the ever-changing definition of art since it reflects the advancements happening in the realm of art.
